With more downsizing and short term contracts, there is a climate of job insecurity and people fear to ask for a pay rise. If you are happy in your position, asking for a pay rise can be best instead of changing job.
Before you ask, research out what the market rates are. If the equivalent businesses are paying the same money for your role, it will be waste to work after salary rise.
Convince your boss that you are worth a pay rise. Present your achievements of the past years clearly and in simple terms. Where possible, present testimonials of clients.
Give the boss the reason that will justify your increase. Mention if you have brought financial benefits to the company, helped in smooth running of departments or introduced new ideas or working practices.
Explain what you hope to achieve in the next few months and how you can improve your work.
Do not make unrealistic promises.
It is not a good idea to say that you need the extra money to purchase a house or a baby is on the way.
You have to prove that you deserve the pay rise.
Make sure managers and directors know who you are and are aware of your good work.
But don’t over do it.
Do not threaten to walk out of the company if your appeal is turned down.
