Prototype of sustainable residential block for 1000 people (Russia, Moscow and Moscow region; 2018) Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4GWNbs5DEjM&t Project team: Alexander Altenkov, Altynai Nogoibaeva, Einar Kulbaev, Bek Mederbekov, Kamilya Yusupova, Galina Vasilchenko, Michael Omona, Neeraj Mazumder, Anna Budnikova, Valeria Miftakhova, Michael Sokolov, Daria Klimova, Dmitry Khalzev Personal role: Design concept, basic design principles, functional typologies, social and economic models Consultants: Ivan Mitrofanov, Daniel Ibanes (GSD,Harvard), Alexander Ostrogorsky, Jochen Scheerer (IAAC) Oscar Aceves (IAAC), PHI team (Strelka), Fab Lab Moscow, Habidatum International Project directors: Vicente Guallart; Elena Mitrofanova Text: The prototype housing created by the students is a mix of trends and solutions which either exist already or are at the design stage. The project is a residential complex on a block which is 100 by 150 meters. Similar blocks already exist in Moscow. This type of residential complex is being constructed all over the world has become a trend in recent years. The students have come up with options which involve changing its configuration depending on the location and number of prospective tenants, as well as its height. Students were divided into groups and each group came up with its own design of the residential block for a population density of 1000 people. The final design includes, at the base of the block, a stylobate. There is an open courtyard in the center, which is where the commercial spaces are located. In order to create a viable economic model of the block, the project team consulted the company ‘Habidatum’, where research on this topic was conducted. The economic model of the block is as follows: 65% is housing for purchase by the future tenants, 10% is housing to be rented out, and 20% is for commercial spaces which cater to the wider city population and for commercial spaces which cater only to the residents of the block. The remaining 5% is intended for new businesses, such as fab labs, farms with artificial lighting, and small coworking spaces inside each building. All the houses in the block have their own space which is located on the lower floors and has various functions. For example, in one of the houses, there is a restaurant and a farm with artificial lighting for growing vegetables all year round. In another building, there is a space to rent not only cars (electric cars), but also bicycles, scooters and segways. One of the unusual features of the block is that it allows deliveries to be made using drones. The designers of the project are certain that such a method of delivery will be quite common in the near future. They consider that their residential block will be wellsuited to normal life and will not require restructuring or radical changes. Wood and concrete were chosen for the construction of the residential block. This combination is becoming more and more popular, and several ‘wooden’ skyscrapers are currently under construction. This is due to an attempt by architects to engage in environmentally friendly construction in large cities. Furthermore, new technologies make it possible to create wooden structures which are fire-resistant. The residential block created by the students includes houses consisting of wooden panels and a concrete core with space for an elevator. Wooden panels are of several varieties and there are windows of different sizes. This flexible structure makes it possible to alter the appearance of the building, and the size of apartments can be adjusted depending on the needs of the tenants. The roofs of all houses are beveled and oriented to the south in order to generate as much solar energy as possible via the solar panels located on the roof. Another environmentally friendly idea is the use of filtered rain water and ‘grey water’ (the water which is left over after washing hands, dishes and showering). After filtration and purification, this water can be used on the garden, for example.

The first phase of the reconstruction of the Chistopol’s historical quarter: Center for Contemporary Culture «Chistopol» (Russia, Chistopol; 2017) Text: One of the main ideas of the architectural concept is the contrast to the existing environment, while preserving the existing buidings. This idea is based on a historical context. During the Second World War, many famous writers and poets were evacuated to Chistopol, including Nobel laureate Boris Pasternak, Thus, in a short time, a powerful cultural social layer of the intelligeсtuals was artificially formed in a provincial, unknown city. This event completely changed the lifestyle of the average Chistopol citizen, and also radically changed the status of the city, making it the literary center of Russia of that period, which remains for Chistopol until now and is one of the main tourist brands. The emergence of a center of contemporary culture in a provincial and extremely conservative city should create the same effect, reinforcing the existing social intellectual layer, as well as marking Chistopol on the contemporary cultural map of the world. One of the main elements of the architectural image of the building is the entrance group. It represents a “funnel” that draws a person passing by into the world of art, culture and science. As if the blue circle flowing out of the building, emphasizing the entrance group, embodies the idea of spreading freedom into the city space. Electronic panels with running lines of information about exhibitions and upcoming events of the center are installed on walls of the entrance group. Text movement on electronic boards is directed inside the building, which enhances the “dragging effect”.

Augmented communication (Russia,Moscow; 2017-ongoing) In collaboration with Michael Eugene Collins Omona Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6kq0Ky225A Personal role: Idea, design concept, coding, video production, 1/2 fabrication Curators: Vicente Guallart; Andrey Yelbaev; Elena Mitrofanova Text: This project response to a problem of informational pollution and daily overabundance and information that human need to deal with. Above mentioned context affect on communication between people and our ability of feeling and perceiving information, atrophying them and making automatic. How we can make communication between people again sensitive and even sensual? Bring human attention to conscious interaction. Using technological context that we are facing nowadays we decided to use it as a tool for humanization and came up with an idea of augmented communication. The prototype makes use of miniature vibromotors strategically distributed for contact with most sensitive parts of arm. For proof of concept the initial zone of choice was the arm, selected because it is one of most used parts of the body. By designing the device as a wearable element, it was intended that the arms would still be freely used for everyday tasks. Also these areas of our arm associates with certain gestures (for ex. handshake associated with a wrist etc)
