THESIS
A BRIEF CHRONOLOGY OF MYSORE
HISTORY MUSEUM AND CULTURAL CENTRE, MYSORE Mysore is the old and charming heritage city of Karnataka with its wide roads and boulevards, old Greco - Roman buildings, old world greenery and it’s generally laid back life. Although the Goverment now controls the running of the city, the Mysore Maharajas have always been an influential factor in its growth and development. They have generously contributed to charity, smooth running of the Dussehra parade, the exhibition and the daily meals provided by them for the poor. After the death of Srikanta Dutta Wodeyar, last king of Mysore in 2013, a suit was filed in court by the Karnataka Govt against the Wodeyar family for the possession of the Mysore Palace. In 2014, the entire palace was won by the Wodeyar Family in the High Court of Karnataka. The decision was challanged by the Govt in the Supreme Court. Hence, there is still a very high chance that the palace may become privatised. The privatisation of the palace would lead to a cultural void in the city of Mysore as it the sole reason for tourists to come throughout the year. A program was needed which would fill this void in terms of history and cultural activities of Mysore Palace.
1972 MAP
1897 MAP
A BRIEF HISTORY OF MYSORE 1792 MAP showing the time during rule of Tipu Sultan. The area marked in purple is the kingdom of tipu sultan. He was defeated by the british in 1799 in the 4th mysore war. Although the history in Mysore talks mostly about the influences of the British and Tipu Sultan, there have been several other factors which influenced the way Mysore grew and prospered. A few other influences rarely mentioned were the Mughal influence on the British which directly and indirectly affected the trade and the architecture in Mysore, The French and the Portuguese from cities like Pondicherry, Ootacamund and also Coorg. The fact that the relationship between the Mysore Maharaja and the British was of peace and alliance was also a very key factor in the way Mysore grew and developed. 1897 MAP map commissioned to be made in 1897 by the British Viceroy to divide the existing area around Mysore to accomodate Urban Functions. The city was very carefully planned by European Urban Planners being specifically brought for this purpose. As we can see, the Centre of the map shows the Mysore Palace facing the then present Dodda Kere.

SITE
MYSORE PALACE
LANDMARKS AROUND THE SITE
The site is located in the Indian state of Karnataka. The state majorly consists of 4 divisions of which Mysore falls in the southern region of Karnataka. The Mysore division consists of K.R. Nagara, H.D Kote, Periapatna, Hunsur, Nanjangud and Mysore districts. Although Mysore city is very well developed with several urban planning projects already being executed, the rest of the division is very developed with hardly any resources being devoted to it. The site is right in front of the Mysore palace and the Dussehra exhibition grounds. Presently the site is used for parking purposes but is active only during the months November to January. The site reamins unused for the rest of the year. Although the front gate of the palace is the one facing the site, it is not used as it faces an insignifant area of the site in an urban sense. The proposed project aims to make this site active hence creating a recreational hub in this part of the palace.

SITE ANALYSIS
Although part of the central city, the area highlighted has very low density. Mysore being a planned city has been planned in such a way as to create an area which consists of recreational activities which majorly include parks and open spaces. The tourism map of Mysore. The Mysore palace is right in the centre of the tourism hub in Mysore. The most active areas in Mysore throughout the year are the Mysore Palace, Dussehra exhibition grounds and the chamundi hills.

CONCEPT AND DESIGN DEVELOPMENT DESIGN INTENT To create a plaza connecting the entire stretch from the palace to the proposed structure. To change the present dodda kere maidan so that both the palace and the dussehra exhibition ground have more importance in terms of urban utility an recreation. The dodda kere maidan used to be a lake which was filled up, hence to recreate a small portion of the lake. To create a museum which portrays history from various points of view and not just through the point of view of mysore. To portray a much wider historical account rather than just the wodeyar history. The palaces presently used for showcasing history do so in a manner which have not evolved over the years.... to change this by providing the necessary spaces so that history can be experienced and not just watched. To create a tourism opportunity which would be active throughout the year and not just during the months between october and january. To have interactive galleries, talks, guided tours, performances and art related activities and galleries.
