BEAUTIFUL DESTINATIONS TO VISIT IN INDIA

Through the mists of Wayanad, Kerela

Standing on the majestic Western Ghats, the monsoon washes away the dust from the leaves giving the entire place an ethereal quality.

6

A masterpiece of God Nature, a hidden prodigy of Kerala, Wayanad lies beyond the most exquisite imaginations of any explorer. With its endless and so varied destinations, Wayanad is a rich nutrient to your perpetual curiosity and a challenge to your wanderlust. Wayanad is among the few places of India which are highly buzzed but ironically least explored. Geography of Wayanad

district comprises dense forests with rich flora and fauna, elevated hills of Western Ghats, Islands, Serene Rivers, natural lakes and appeasing dams… almost everything for a traveler’s delight. Although outshined by its pristine geography, Wayanad cannot be overlooked as a home to many ancient temples and habitat of last remaining tribal population of Kerala. Other than typical sight-seeing, Wayanad also offers a wide range of opportunities for bird watching, jungle walk, nature walk, trekking, forest safari, kayaking in bamboo forest etc. Wayanad is also your best chance to sight wild life (Especially Wild elephants). It is also home of significant tiger population of Nilgiri Biosphere reserve. Wayanad is a unique kind of destination with so many explored, unexplored, less explored destinations and it’s impossible to explore it thoroughly in a leisurely trip (Especially if you are planning it as a weekend trip). For a trip to Wayanad, it’s always recommended to chalk out the list of destination/activities before landing to Wayanad else you will get confuse with its grandeur and end up coming back with frowning curiosity. According to a local legend the name of the place is derived from two words, ‘Vayal’ and ‘Naad’. When the two words are combined it means the ‘Land of Paddy Fields’. Wayanad stands on the majestic Western Ghats that

are awe-inspiring especially during the monsoons. The rains wash away the dust from the leaves giving the entire place an ethereal quality. The Ghats remind one of a large sparkling emerald. You can weave your own fairy-tale around the place! The place has been a witness to the invasion carried out by Hyder Ali in the eighteenth century. Later, the place was ruled by the royal family of Kottayam. Then the place was ruled by the British for over 100 years. It was during the rule of the British that tea and coffee plantations were started in Wayanad. The British also built roads in and around Wayanad to make it easily accessible. This helped bring in a large influx of settlers to the town. Wayanad proved to be a dream come true for the people who had come to the place looking for new and better opportunities. The lush green hills of Wayanad have hidden well some of the oldest tribes of our country. These tribes have no interest in getting streamlined with the outer world; they wish to remain one with the nature always. And it is not difficult to blame them. Once you have seen the sparkling emerald that is Wayanad you wouldn’t want to stay away from it.

Rann of Kutch Gujarat Tourism has started holding a Rann Ustav festival, which begins in December and is a must for nature lovers.

The Rann of Kutch, also known as the Great Rann of Kutch (there’s a Little Rann of Kutch as well), is a remarkable place to visit in Gujarat. Much of it consists of the world’s largest salt desert, measuring around 10,000 square kilometers. What makes it even more amazing is that the salt desert is underwater during the main monsoon season in India. For the remaining eight months of the year, it’s an enormous stretch of packed white salt. Here’s all the information you need to visit it. The vast and arid expanse that is the Great Rann of Kutch lies to the north of the Tropic of Cancer, at the top of the Kutch district. It’s best approached via Bhuj. Dhordo, approximately 86 kilometers from Bhuj, is being developed by the Gujarat government as the Gateway to the Rann. Dhordo is on the edge of the salt desert. It’s most convenient to stay

there, or nearby Hodka. The Rann of Kutch begins to dry up in October every year, steadily transforming into the desolate and surreal salt desert. The tourist season runs until March, and the above mentioned accommodations close at the end of March. You can still visit the salt desert in April and May though, on a day trip from Bhuj. It’s best to head out into the desert only in the early morning or evening, otherwise the salt can be blinding. The full moon is the best time of month to see it, and cultural programs are usually held at Dhordo then. A moonlight Rann camel safari is magical. Gujarat Tourism has started holding a Rann Ustav festival, which begins in December. Hundreds of luxury tents are set up near the Gateway to Rann Resort at Dhordo for visitors, along with rows of food and handicraft stalls. The package

price includes sightseeing trips to surrounding attractions. In recent years, the festival has extended until March and become increasingly commercialized. Unfortunately, this has resulted in pollution and garbage in the area. If you want to see the Rann of Kutch from a different perspective, Kala Dungar (Black Hill) offers a panoramic view from 458 meters above sea level. You can see all the way across to the Pakistani border. Kala Dungar is accessible via the village of Khavda, which is 25 kilometers away, and around 70 kilometers from Bhuj.
