Flyovers: Thesis Argument
Architecture Underbelly
of
an
Over time cities have consolidated their neighborhoods and hence, when a new infrastructure is built to respond the requiring city conditions, they tend to not coordinate with the neighboring context. These infrastructures are designed to function for a singular purpose which often fails to identify the multiple spatialities, the form and the characteristics of an infrastructure can offer. Due to this, the infrastructure and the space it occupies remains dead and disruptive to the neighborhood. The designs of the infrastructures fail to connect with the neighborhood which dehumanizes the space they occupy and the landscape of that space becomes grey.
What would be the Architecture of such an Under-space ? Dead & under-utilized spaces

T h e N a t u r e P a r k Master Plan Kolkata locates itself within the delta of the Ganges (or Ganga) where the river splits into myriad tributaries through the fertile plains and later it merges with the Bay of Bengal. It has a distinct ecology and landscape related to the usage & drainage of water in the city. The Mudiali Nature Park at Taratala has a constructed eco-system dealing with water, plantation, fishing & animal husbandry which serves the domestic purposes of the community. Concept & Idea

Placing the sections on the base curve. Joining all the sectional curves with a single plane by lofting. Bounding box is made as a reference for the grid. An array of points is made for placing the spindals Eliminating the points outside the lofted surafce. Placing the spindals and extruding them depending on the heights of sections.

Of LAND or WATER ?

Mumbai city which is ‘reclaimed’ and Flooding points & levels transformed this landscape along its generous coastline where rivers are concentrated in the region defined by what used to be Salsette Island and the foothills led to vast floodplains and estuaries feeding into the creeks, before joining the Arabian Sea. Recent decades have witnessed extreme pressure on the land for urbanization, including for housing, industries and infrastructure projects. This modification of the ‘nadi’ by reducing it into a hard-edged, concrete ‘nallah’ has tampered the ecosystem This study situated itself in and around ‘R-ward’ to begin with, as the peripheries of this swatch contain the foothills of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park on one side and the Manori creek on the other. Using Geographic Information System (GIS) software generated maps to attribute contours, built form, infrastructure, soil type etc and the identifying major ‘ridges’ and ‘valleys’ formed by the terrain which makes watershed systems. Through landscape mapping, field findings & urbanism method, a speculation of the flooding and sea level rise issue for this city was made till the year 2050. Topographic Boundaries

Flyovers in the city are only designed as movement corridor for vehicles, to move from one point to the other, huge amount of under spaces of this flyover AV / Lecture becomes inaccessible to the city.
