DESIGN FACTORY GLOBAL NETWORK Design Factory Global Network (DFGN), is a network of institutions, which all have their own innovation platforms that drive change towards a better learning culture. The original Design Factory in Aalto was built to carry out the mission of educating the best product designers in the world, focusing on design innovation and interdisciplinary problem based learning. DFGN started to form as other international institutions identified Aalto University Design Factory (ADF) as a best-practice and have consequently built their own innovation platforms, to cater for their own development needs and interests.

AALTO DESIGN FACTORY

DFGN emerged in 2012 as the third Design Factory was opened, taking the Design Factory concept from a partnership and collaboration to a network. By the end of 2015 DFGN has grown into a network of 11 institutions. Ten Design Factories, nine of which have officially launched, and one collaboration partner. This brochure will provide a review of the year 2015 in the network, for ADF partners and stakeholders.

At the core of the activities at all Design Factories are interdisciplinary problem-based project courses where students work together with industry sponsors. This makes them the obvious and most often the first form of collaboration within the DFGN. ADF supports the development of both the platforms as well as the courses, leading to similar ways of working despite the geographical distribution. Aalto University Design Factory

RAT RELAY - PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT SPRINT IN DFGN The first phase of Rat Relay, a 48-hour pilot took place in January 2016. In this teaching experiment global problems were solved for eight hours by one country and then passed on to a new country, just like runners pass on the baton in a relay. ADF staff members and student volunteers worked in interdisciplinary teams of four to six people in eight-hour slots to solve the problems originating from the four different countries. Members of the network were presumably the first people ever to test teaching product development in a 48-hour global relay.

Therefore DFGN hopes to on one side experiment with best practices in transferring knowledge onwards, but also how to use this model to capitalize on the global spread of the network to solve some of the biggest global problems currently facing the society.

Rat Relay simulates a real-world situation in industrial product development. Often only one individual or team works on a project for a limited time and not from the project’s beginning to its end.
