In July 2014, I traveled out of state to attend a four day intensive training to become a provisionally certified doula through the International Center for Traditional Childbearing. This 22 page zine encapsulates my journal entries, reflections, and some practical information learned during those four days. As a doula committed to support for the most marginalized in our communities, including poor and people of color, and specializing in support for survivors of sexual violence and also for LGBTQ, with an emphasis on Trans* and genderqueer families, this training was deeply important to me. The opportunity to learn from the Black Granny Midwife model and with a heavy emphasis on cultural competency helped me to clarify my own vision of what my work should be.
