PRESIDENT DR. ANDREW HUGINE, JR. Dr. Andrew Hugine, Jr. is a native of Green Pond, South Carolina, a small rural community in the low country of South Carolina. He is the son of an AME Minister, Rev. Andrew Hugine, Sr. and an elementary school teacher, Irene S. Hugine. Following his graduation from Colleton High School as an honor student, he enrolled in South Carolina State University where earned the Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics followed by the Master of Education degree in mathematics education. The doctorate in Higher Education/ Institutional Research was earned from Michigan State University. He has presented at numerous professional meetings is the author of three mathematics textbooks. His lengthy and productive career began as an instructor at Beaufort High School in Beaufort, South Carolina. His professional positions include Graduate Teaching Assistant and Assistant Professor of Institutional Research at Michigan State University. At South Carolina State University, positions held included: Director of Special Services; Director of University Year for Action Program—a service-learning program; Research Fellow, Assistant and Director of Institutional Self-Study; Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs; Professor of Mathematics; and Interim Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. From 2003-08, Dr. Hugine culminated his 30-year affiliation with South Carolina State University as her President. In July of 2009 Hugine became the 11th President of Alabama A&M University. Dr. Andrew Hugine, Jr. was appointed as the 11th President of Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University on July 16, 2009. Immediately upon his appointment, Hugine addressed the University’s probationary status with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools resulting in the removal of the university from SACS’ sanction in December 2009; developed a financial plan to address the university’s budgetary issues; reorganized the five academic schools into four colleges: College of Agricultural, Life and Natural Sciences; College of Business and Public Affairs; College of Engineering, Technology and Physical Sciences; and the College of Education, Humanities and Behavioral Sciences; established the division and position of Assistant Vice President for Enrollment Management/ Director of Admissions; expanded institutional advancement to provide increased emphasis on marketing and communication; instituted the Normal Legacy Society to recognize life-time contributions of $100,000 or more to the university; successfully raising the $1,000,000 amount required for the state matching of $1,000,000 under the Councill Challenge; initiated the 1875 Normalite Campaign; the Adopt-a-Band Drive to replace Band uniforms; established the “Service is Sovereignty” Society to formally recognize employees who have provided 30 or more years of service to the University; hosted the 2010 White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities and a National Poultry Conference jointly sponsored by two United States Cabinet members: U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. The Hugine administration has focused on enhancing the aesthetics of the campus. Through the efforts of the Bulldog Pride Committee--consisting of students, faculty, staff, alumni and the community--chaired by First Lady Abbiegail Hugine, and a partnership with Aramark, visible improvements in the aesthetics of the campus have been noted. Two state-of-the-art electronic marquees have been installed and over $10 million have been spent in upgrading, renovating, and addressing health and safety issues in campus facilities, particularly student residence halls. Hugine holds membership in a number of civic and professional organizations. He maintains membership in his home church of White Hall African Methodist Episcopal Church in Green Pond, South Carolina and is an active affiliate member of St. John African Methodist Episcopal Church in Huntsville, Alabama. Other memberships include the Huntsville Rotary; Huntsville /Madison Chamber of Commerce, Board of Directors; Xi Omicron Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and Life Member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity; Life Member of South Carolina State University National Alumni Association; Edisto Lodge #39 Free and Accepted Masons; 100 Black Men of America, Huntsville Chapter; Epsilon Kappa Boule’ of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity; Life member of the NAACP; Alabama Council of Presidents; and the Alabama School for Science and Mathematics Board of Directors. He has been recognized for his contributions by several organizations. At South Carolina State University, the 781 bed residence hall, The Andrew Hugine, Jr. Living/ Learning Complex is named in his honor. Other honors include being named Father of the Year by the Orangeburg Chapter of Jack and Jill; Mason of the Year by Edisto Lodge # 39; Lay Person of the Year by the South Carolina Annual Conference Lay Organization; included in the 2012 Stellar Alumni Calendar of South Carolina State University; featured on the cover of the 2005 Winter edition of the Oracle and on the 2006 cover of the Oracle with Grand Basileus George Grace; named Citizen of the Year by Epsilon Omega Chapter; Advisor of the Year by the Sixth District; Omega Man of the Year by Epsilon Omega, and Honorary Chair of the Salute to Education during the Centennial Celebration of Omega Psi Phi. Dr. Hugine and his wife Abbiegail have an adult son, Andrew Hugine, III; a daughter, Akilah Hugine-Elmore; a son-in-law, Quincy Elmore; and a grandson, Amir.

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR BRYAN HICKS A new era for Bulldog Athletics began on June 4, 2012 when President Andrew Hugine Jr. introduced Bryan Hicks as the third Athletic Director in the short Division I history of Alabama A&M University. Hicks returned to his alma mater after serving at Missouri State University as Associate Athletic Director for Student Development from August 2009 to June 2012. Prior to his arrival in Springfield, Hicks spent thirteen years at the University of Louisville as an academic advisor for athletes, compliance coordinator, Associate Director for Academic Services, and the last five years as Assistant Athletic Director for Academics overseeing the academic responsibilities for the Cardinal football team, Papa John Cardinal Stadium computer lab, and other team operations. Hicks was also an assistant coach for men’s basketball and multicultural admission coordinator at Warner Pacific College in Portland, Oregon. The Huntsville native was a college basketball and baseball studentathlete at Tuskegee University. He received his bachelor’s degree in marketing from Alabama A&M in

1992 and earned his master's degree in public administration (MPA) from Portland State in 1996.

Hicks set the tone early for excellence in all phases of Bulldog athletics. In his first six months back on “The Hill”, he coordinated facility renovations and upgrades of Louis Crews Football Field, the men’s & women’s tennis courts, and men’s & women’s basketball locker rooms. In addition, Alabama A&M partnered with the City of Huntsville and the Huntsville School Board for purchase of new field turf for football. This agreement included the usage of Louis Crews Stadium for high school and middle school football games. He hired Willis Mbandi, one of the Bulldogs’ most outstanding former men’s tennis players, as Head Coach for Men’s & Women’s Tennis and Michael Tompkins, the youngest Division I Head Baseball Coach. He also hired former University of Tennessee All-American basketball standout Semeka Randall as Head Women’s Basketball Coach.

His priorities for the athletic department are to put the student-athlete first, be fiscally responsible, maintain NCAA compliance, win conference championships, and finally to exude class in all of those areas.

Hicks has also enhanced the brand of A&M by scheduling BCS institutions (Auburn 2012, Georgia Tech 2013) for football and celebrating their first

Hicks completed executive level career development with Collegiate Athletics Leadership Symposium (2011, 2012) and the NCAA Leadership Institute for Ethnic Minority Males (2002). He was the Director for the 2012 Missouri Valley Baseball Tournament and sat on the Board of Directors for the Urban League of Portland, Oregon. Hicks is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, Black Coaches and Administrators, National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics, and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

Mitch Hill, HEAD COACH BS, MA, University Of North Alabama First Season Coach Mitch Hill enters his first year as the head baseball coach at Alabama A&M University. Coach Hill will be running the pitching staff, working with catchers, recruiting extensively, and helping with other administrative duties for the baseball program. Coach Hill has already made an impact on our baseball program by hitting the recruiting trail and bringing guys on our campus for visits to have a great early sign class for the 2014 season. Mitch began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at his Alma Mater, University of North Alabama under Head Coach Mike Keehn for 3 seasons. Although Mitch helped with every aspect of the game he was primarily charged with the recruiting of future Student-Athletes. Mitch worked extensively with in the Florence community helping with American Legion and UNA camps during the summer months. Mitch helped guide 3 Academic All-Americans, 3 players that went on to sign professional contracts and 12 All-Conference players. Coach Hill continued his coaching career as an assistant coach at two different junior colleges in the Southeast, Motlow State Community College and Bevill State Community College. Mitch spent one year at Bevill State Community College as the pitching coach, recruiting coordinator, and infield coach before the athletic program was cut from the college. During that year he had a top three recruiting class in the state of Alabama. He also had 3 Academic AllAmericans and two players that signed letters of intent to continue playing college baseball at the 4 year level. After Bevill he spent one year at Motlow State Community College in Lynchburg Tennessee as the assistant baseball coach under Head Coach, Dan McShea. Mitch helped guide the bucks to the best season theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had in seven years with 34 wins and an appearance in the state tournament. Coach Hill had one JUCO All-American and 16 players go on to sign letters of intent at the four year level. Coach Hill lettered and pitched for the UNA Lions from 2002 to 2007 where he earned his bachelors in Physical Education and minor in Business Administration. Mitch also earned his masters in Health Promotion and Human Performance. Coach Hill is a native of Florence Alabama and is married to Erin Elizabeth Lynn Hill, who is a native of Florence as well. Erin is a registered nurse at Huntsville Hospital.

LaDale Hayes, ASSISTANT COACH BS, Alabama A&M University 2009 First Season This is LaDale Hayes first season as assistant baseball coach at Alabama A&M University. He will focus on the outfielders, hitters and supervise gameday operations. Hayes played collegiality at Alabama A&M where he was a four-year starter in the outfield. The Stafford, Va., native hit .323 for his career with 34 doubles, 14 triples, 10 home runs, 91 RBIs and 39 stolen bases. A two-time First Team All-Southwestern Athletic Conference selection, Hayes led the NCAA in triples as a sophomore with nine. He was also a hard-throwing right-handed reliever at Alabama A&M. Hayes graduated from the â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Hillâ&#x20AC;? in 2010 with a degree in Agriculture Business Management before being drafted in the second round of the Frontier League Draft by the Evansville Otters as a pitcher. He has spent the past two seasons playing professionally in Canada for the Ottawa Fat Cats of the Intercounty Baseball League. In 46 games across two seasons, Hayes has batted .301 with eight doubles, two home runs, 21 RBIs and 20 stolen bases. Served as the director of baseball operations at George Washington University 2012-2013.

Nick Flanagan, Graduate Assistant BS, Martin Methodist First Season Coach Nick Flanagan is in his first year of coaching at Alabama A&M University.

His duties consist of developing the strength and conditioning program, working extensively with the hitters and catchers, and recruiting.

Flanagan comes to “The Hill” from a successful collegiate baseball career. He began his career at Northwest Shoals Community College and finished at Martin Methodist College in Pulaski, Tennessee. His work in the classroom earned him First Team Transouth AllAcademic awards. As a two-year team captain at Martin Methodist, Flanagan’s playing abilities earned him two First Team All-Transouth Conference awards and a First Team All-Regional award as a senior. He also capped off his senior year as the NAIA Champion of Character recipient and the Martin Methodist College Male Athlete of the Year. His most esteemed accomplishment was his opportunity to help lead Martin Methodist to their first ever Transouth Conference Championship title.

Flanagan graduated with his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Martin Methodist College. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Educational Biology.

Walter Ashwander, Graduate Assistant BS, Alabama A&M University First Season Mr. Walton Ashwander joins the Bulldogs after a two year stint in the Maroon & White.

Ashwander earned his General Studies degree in May 2013. His two years of action allowed him to collect 32 hits in 193 at bats in 62 games played with 60 started. The Hartsville, Alabama also posted 10 runs, a pair of doubles, 11 runs batted in, 37 strikeouts, and 127 putouts.

In 2012 Ashwander posted seven games with multiple hits and led the team with the longest hitting streak at nine. He also enjoyed 10 contests with reached bases. Walter set a career high of seven assists in fielding versus Mississippi Valley. His best game of 2012 happened on March 31, versus Jackson State. Ashwander went 3 for 5 with a run and three RBIâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. He posted six strikeouts from the mound in 2012 and 35 in 2013. He set his career high with four strikeouts versus Alcorn State, March 29.

——SEASON PREVIEW—— Normal- The upcoming season will be a busy one for the Bulldog baseball team. The team has scheduled 55 games for first year head coach Mitch Hill’s inaugural season. The Maroon & White will play majority of their games in front of the home crowd, as 30 of the 55 games will take place at Bulldog Field. “Comparing to last year we stayed on the road often. This year being my first as a head coach, it just so happens that the schedule allows us to be home majority of the season,” mentioned Hill. “I feel that gives us an advantage. Home field is a good thing, it’s easier to win at home then on the road; but we also have to be able to go into different cities, especially in our conference and be victorious. We will have to come up with good wins on the road as well as at home.” Kicking off the season will be a four game series versus Indiana Purdue-Fort Wayne, beginning on February 14, at 12:00 p.m. After hosting IPFW, A&M will play a home and home series with the Blazers of Alabama-Birmingham. “As a coaching staff, expectations are high this year. Teams on our non-conference schedule like Auburn and Troy have new coaching staffs or are rebuilding. Troy University lost three guys in the middle of their line up due to the draft,” said Hill. “The way we have done our schedule this year I feel like we can compete with every team we are set to face”. On February 21, the Bulldogs will welcome the visiting Jackrabbits of South Dakota State. The team from the Summit League will travel to the southeast to play a four game series in Huntsville. After facing SDS, the Maroon and White will hit the road to play both Auburn and Lipscomb, before returning home to start Southwestern Athletic Conference play. “IPFW and South Dakota State who we start off with in the first two weeks, will travel down to Huntsville to play us and it will probably be the first time they get to get on the field in the spring. If we win right away in the first few weeks that’s going to give our team some confidence,” mentions the first-year leader. Kicking off conference play, A&M will host the Braves of Alcorn State in a three game series. The team will then hit the road to play the Tigers of the University of Missouri before continuing conference play versus the Tigers of Jackson State University in Jackson, Mississippi. The team will then return home for a long eight game home stand. A&M will host in state rival Alabama State (3 games), Morehead State (2 games), and Abilene Christian (3 games), before venturing on the road again. In their third extended road trip, the team will travel to the Peach State to take on Georgia Southern, before getting back to league action versus the Devils of Mississippi Valley State in Itta Bena, Mississippi. The second half of the season will see the Bulldogs take on competition from non-conference programs Tennessee Tech, Samford University, the University of North Alabama, Troy, and Louisiana Tech as well as the conference foes Alcorn State, Jackson State, Alabama State and Mississippi Valley. Contests versus Tennessee Tech, Samford, and North Alabama will be in a home and home format, while action versus Louisiana Tech will be a three game series in Ruston, La. “We’ve brought in 22 new guys, so we will have a lot of new faces bouncing around on the field, expectations are high and we are excited.,” Hill recalls. “Keep an eye out for Andrew Utterback(OF, P), Justen Folger (2B), and Trey Nelson (OF, 2B, P), if these three guys can have a good season for us and put up good numbers we will be successful,” Hill continued. “If Nelson has a great season as expected, I believe he could be an All-Conference selection this upcoming year”, says Hill. “Along with the newcomers, we return Austin Hulsey and Patrick Dodson who were both All-SWAC selections last year. We look forward to them keeping their momentum rolling from last season to lead the 2014 Maroon & White Squad,” adds coach Hill.
