00. A PEEK INTO
MY WORLD I am often asked a question as to where I draw my inspiration as a designer. What makes me unique and what lends character to my works? “My answer, is that I am inspired by everyday objects that may seem ‘ordinary’ but are not.” It could be a coffee stained napkin, a flower in my vase or my diamond ring. When I am researching for a project these objects lend a voice and I can see much more than what you see on the surface. It is just a matter of what you percieve, a glass half empty or a glass half full. This book is a collection of my design works which illustrate how my inspiration points have transpired into design directions and ideas for my projects. So on the surface it may seem like an ordinary book but it’s much more than that...

A GEM OF A
CHOCOLATE Being a woman, I know the two gifts that will always stay in my wishlist are diamonds and chocolates! Both valuable, objects of desire, and one thing is for sure, you can never have enough! Together, they are a match made in heaven! This was the seed of thought that transpired into this project. OBJECTIVE To chose an exisiting company and come up with a line of chocolates that can become part of their exisitng product line. I chose De Beers that sells diamond jewelry and worked at creating a premium chocolate line that could be sold as an accompanying gift with the store’s jewelry. INSPIRATION A diamond ring INTERPRETATION AND OUTCOME A luxurious design inspired by the intricate cuts of a jewel. A patterned framework that glitters like a diamond and gives you the illusion of a sparkle, forms the base of the design, and is different for each kind of chocolate. A special collection of truffle boxes was designed to emulate the feel of opening a box to discover a gem. Overall, the packaging is rich and lavish, complete with a gift box that screams, I am precious!

AS FRESH AS A
BLOOMING DAISY Springtime is seen as a time of growth, renewal, of new life being born, and of the cycle of life once again starting. It is marked by blossoming buds, a pleasant breeze, the colored landscape with wildflowers spreading across miles...When I think of fresh, I think of rain drops on a blooming flower. OBJECTIVE To revitalize the look of Ace Paints and launch a new product line. INSPIRATION A Flower INTERPRETATION AND OUTCOME The organic illustrations and color palette were inspired from blossoming flowers and the color of the landscape during springtime. I proposed a new collection called Spring Blossoms for the brand, with a fresh and vibrant look that stands out against the competition. The target audience, women generally shy away from this aspect of home improvement. The design breaks the old, traditional, rigid form of communication and lends a new voice and outlook to the brand.

A HOME OUT OF
PLASTIC BAGS The process of creating something new out of something that is used and potentially considered waste is challenging but also exciting and rewarding. The marriage of different materials that have no common bond, transpiring into a new object that has functionality sometimes turns into a piece of art! So, while I was fishing for objects for this project at a recycle centre, I found the hero right here at home ‘the plastic bag’! OBJECTIVE To utilize eco-friendly methods to build a functional birdhouse out of recycled or scrapped materials. INSPIRATION A grocery bag INTERPRETATION AND OUTCOME Just as birds weave their nest my inspiration point led me into using the traditional technique of crochet and using target grocery bags instead of thread or wool. That became the basis of the main structure or outer covering of the birdhouse. The red and white color combination lends itself beautifully to the design aesthetic. The base is an old wicker basket, the middle frame is a scrapped plastic table-mat. These materials were acquired from the local city recycling center. The result is a visually appealing and functional birdhouse.

SOME STAINS ARE
INTENTIONAL Someone once said to me, “I would love to get a tatoo but I am not sure if I can live with that stain on my body, all my life!”. People get tattoos for a variety of reasons: to identify themselves with a religious or social group, to adorn their bodies, as protective symbols, to cover skin discolorations, to embrace a feeling, to flaunt an attitude, to proclaim love, to support an ideology...it is but a way of expression of one’s true self a medium to find one’s inner freedom. Wouldn’t it be perfect, if you could do the same and the so called “stain” was good for your body, and wasn’t permanent? OBJECTIVE To plan an event sponsored by a health-product company called Aerivie and advertise the paper company Neenah. INSPIRATION A coffee stain INTERPRETATION AND OUTCOME The cofee stain resonated the idea of getting a tatoo. This led to the idea of a Henna body art convention targeting the youth. Henna is a plant-derived product and the stains only last a few days to a month depending on how long the paste is allowed to stay on the skin, which makes it perfect for temporary tattoos. Therefore the art of Henna tattoos was chosen over the traditional form of ink-needle tattooing to reinstate the medicinal and health angle of the event, since the company Aerivie sells health-products. The inspiration lends itself to the color palette and the stain-effect treatment to the illustration style. The tattoo designs are different with purpose as to appeal to a larger audience and to not conform to a particular style. The poster was inspired by tattoo sheets and divided into sections that were perforated, and became take-away pieces. This was to lend more public attention and drive home the idea of freedom which was the essence of the theme of this event.

TO LIGHT UP
YOUR HOME Fred is an iconic brand making fun, stylish products that always have a sense of humor to them. Their products do what they say they will..an example of that is a product called “the uncomb” which is basically a regular comb with some missing bristles so that when you use it, it uncombs your hair! So a word study around the concept of light for my project led me to see this object in a different ‘light’. OBJECTIVE To get experience in working with outside vendors and build a lamp for the company Fred & Friends that would reflect the brand personality. INSPIRATION A cigarette butt INTERPRETATION AND OUTCOME The lamp does what it says and looks the part too! It is a life size lighter, with a flame-shaped lightbulb and has a hidden button that turns on when you move the knob on the top. The result is a product that could be easily added to the Fred catalog.

THE FINER THINGS
IN OUR LIVES When I think of black-tie events I think of gourmet food, bite-size appetizers and a glass of expensive wine. So it was interesting how a pattern on my husband’s neck-tie formed the basis and an integral part of this project and led to some design decisions. OBJECTIVE To design wine bottle labels for the company Nine x Nine reflecting different price points, one each of lower-priced Zinfandel and Chardonnay and also an expensive bottle for the line. INSPIRATION A necktie INTERPRETATION AND OUTCOME Some neck-ties have patterns, and you purchase different styles because each ones lends its own character to your clothes. So when after research I found out that the special thing about this wine is that the grapes are cultivated on 9 x 9 square fields, I decided to do an extensive pattern study with different square designs borrowing in from my inspiration point, thus creating a series of patterns for the different labels. The number 9 also represents the brand and thus was given a prominent spot in the design. In the end you have a visually striking design that would stand out from the competition.

THE EXPERIENCE IS
WHAT MATTERS I am not an expert on fishing but one thing I soon discovered while delving deep into the subject was that fishing is to men what spa is to women! It is the joy of sitting by a lake, taking time, soaking in the environment and then getting a catch. It is an experience and it is as calming and relaxing as it is thrilling... OBJECTIVE To design new packaging for the premium line of Shimano fishing products INSPIRATION Spa rocks INTERPRETATION AND OUTCOME Going to the spa is an experience, it puts you in a serene state of mind, kind of what people feel when they are fishing for leisure. So my inspiration geared me towards a package that sells you that mindset. The photograph of the lake that carries forward to all the packages does just that. The bold typography complements the negative space and the color palette helps differentiate the products.

A CHAPTER IN THE
BOOK OF LIFE Some things form pairs of association like peanut butter and jelly, sun and sand, books and college etc. So the inspiration sank in while just flipping through the pages of a book in one of those moments when you are just wandering and a thought slips in... OBJECTIVE To update and refresh the identity of Pomona college based in Los Angeles so that it connects better with the current and prospective students. INSPIRATION An open book INTERPRETATION AND OUTCOME The old identity uses the visual representation of an open book. My approach was to simplify the old identity, and come to a solution that is both modern yet traditional and can be endorsed by the students with pride. An abstract representation of the same idea which was the visual asset to the existing identity.

ALL NATURAL IS
ALL I WANT Every parent wants a clean and healthy environment for their children while they are growing up. The organic bandwagon has gripped the world and most parents want all natural products for their kids. So I explored the possibilty of creating a brand called OBABY which sells everything organic for children. The idea came about when I was watering the plant at my desk. OBJECTIVE To create a brand and a line of products that would fit in its product catalog. INSPIRATION A plant INTERPRETATION AND OUTCOME The use of all natural materials and green printing and manufacturing methods are the essence of this project. A series of animal characters were developed to create interest and brand recall. The identity could change colors and thus does not fit into the stereotypical green color treatment of it’s counterparts.

TRUE CINEMA IS
INSPIRING Watching movies is one of my favorite things to do. I enjoy the process of analyzing the story, reliving the visuals and finding my own vision in the plot. Every once in a while I would watch something that would be so moving and inspiring it would lead me to find out more. Like reading a book on that subject, researching on it online, joining a cause or in this case, making a book! OBJECTIVE To design a 100 page book on a topic that reinstates the concept of survival. The subject of the book is Emperor penguins and the survival of their chick. INSPIRATION March of the Penguins DVD INTERPRETATION AND OUTCOME The heartwarming narration of the movie haunted me for days and when I had to pick a topic on survival, this became an obvious choice. The visuals helped me decide the look of the book. The bold black lines and the white in the book is reflective of the black and white appearance of the penguins. The illustration style was kept organic as the subject matter is related to living beings and the data was backed up by scientific maps and charts. The book is scientific in approach and yet can be enjoyed by animal lovers.

THE INDIAN IN ME IS
ALWAYS ALIVE Being an Indian immigrant and so far from home, I still feel connected to my roots. A lot of things around me remind me of my homeland, be it the music I play in my car, or the clothes I wear to traditional events, the jewelery my mom gave me or the pen I bought from Rajasthan. So this object that I see and use everyday when I am cooking, my very own indian spice box brought me true inspiration for my project which was an exhibition on Bollywood, the indian movie industry. OBJECTIVE To design print and packaging materials for a Bollywood exhibit at a museum. INSPIRATION Indian spice box INTERPRETATION AND OUTCOME Everything about India reminds me of rich and vibrant colors. Our festivals, music, dance, architecture, all of which forms an integral part of our movies. The rich saturated color of the spices helped shape my color palette and visuals. All the different pieces from the ticket, to the brochure, to the posters each had their own color language yet worked together. The pieces celebrate the essence of Bollywood and try to transport the audience to this make believe world through a tale of visuals. The give-away piece is a smaller book that is a collection of popular concepts used in the indian cinema industry.

A NOTE OF
THANKS To my husband, for his unconditional love and support, for being my strength and my biggest critic, for giving me company on late nights and cooking me a special meal when I was drowned in homework. Without you none of this would have been possible! To my family and friends for always believing in me and giving me that extra dose of confidence whenever I was struck with self-doubt. To all my instructors, without your guidance and support, I would not be the designer that I am today. I will always cherish the valuable lessons and apply this knowledge in the years to come.
