2018 Season Outlook Head coach Pete Cuadrado enters his seventh season at the helm of the Cowgirl soccer program in 2018. He and the Cowgirl team are looking forward to what the upcoming season can bring. “This fall we have added some much needed depth at every position, which also creates a quality training environment where players will compete for a position,” Cuadrado said. “ Additionally, the added depth will help us preserve our fitness late into the season as we look to push for a conference tournament bid. The seniors have been motivated to make changes and improve throughout the off-season, and this will help set the tone for the entire group heading into our preseason trainings.” Wyoming returns six starters and 16 letterwinners from last season’s squad that went 8-9-2 overall and 4-6-1 in the Mountain West. In all, the squad consists of six seniors, five juniors and sophomore and 13 freshmen. Several individuals will be looked upon to contribute during the 2018 campaign, including the six returning starters. Senior Brittney Stark, who was named to the All-Newcomer Team completed her junior campaign with a team-high eight goals, 18 points and three game winning goals. Fellow senior Taylor Burton recorded three goals and had two game winning goals, while senior Morgan McDougal finished with one goal and one assist in her first season with the program. Junior Michaela Stark added two goals and one assist followed by senior Jessie Gentle with two assists and three shots. “Leadership will come from our senior core, as they have also been a group who has experienced much of our previous success as well. They embrace the challenges ahead of them, and genuinely want to compete with the best. Also, our senior class has players on almost every line of our team, so they will be very influential out on the field. “The seniors will need to both show how to fulfill expectations, and guide them in other ways off the field too. We break down into smaller groups at training, so this will be a great time for coaches and returners to really explain the ins and outs of what we are trying to accomplish.” Senior forward Brittney Stark There will also bew a learning curve with the number of incoming freshmen, but Cuadrado feels its an experienced group. “The incoming group has a great resume overall, but at the end of the day they must show up to each training or game with the mindset to do their best. If they do this, then they will have a great impact on the team and our results. Each year the Mountain West has a quality All Newcomer team at the end of the season, and we have been well represented on the list. This group can provide much of the same type of quality impact as years past.” The Cowgirls will play one exhibition match before the official start of the season, traveling to Orlando, Fla., to take on the Central Florida Knights. Wyoming will then open the 2018 season with a road matchup against South Dakota on Aug. 16. The Thursday night contest will be the first meeting with the Coyotes since a 2016 preseason match that the Cowgirls won, 1-0. Utah Valley will then come to Laramie on Aug. 19 for UW’s first home game of the season. The Cowgirls carry the longest non-conference home unbeaten streak among D-I programs into this season, holding an 11-0-2 record dating back to the 2013 season. Wyoming then faces off with Northern Iowa on Aug. 24 for the first time in more than 15 years. The Cowgirls won the only previous contest against the Panthers, 3-0, at home in 2002. UW will then take a road trip to Pocatello, Idaho, to clash with familiar foe Idaho State on Aug. 30. Wyoming has competed against the Bengals each of the last five seasons, and won the last three meetings by a combined score of 8-0. Two more regional rivals follow, with a road contest against Northern Colorado on Sept. 4 before a match against Montana at home on Sept. 7. The Cowgirls will conclude Senior midfielder Annika Clayton their non-conference slate on the road at Southern Utah on Sept. 14. “It will be a series of very close games that will represent our Mountain West opponents. Last fall we had 5 non-conference games that were a single goal margin or tied, and in Mountain west play we had 8 games follow suit. So, with a very similar schedule in opponents we will be well prepared for the competitive play within conference. We’ve challenged ourselves in both type of opponent and type of travel, which again will be important elements to deal with in conference. Overall, if our team stays focused on the next game in front of them, we will be well prepared for a late season push.” Wyoming will face all 11 other Mountain West teams during the regular season, starting with a challenging four-game road trip to open conference play. The Cowgirls will be back at home to place Colorado College on Oct. 5 and Air Force on Oct. 7. Another road trip will end with a clash with San Jose State on Oct. 14. Wyoming was the only MW team to defeat the Spartans last season. UW will wrap up the regular season with a three-game homestand beginning on Oct. 19 against Nevada. On Oct. 21, the Cowgirls will welcome UNLV to the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex. The annual Border War will once again conclude the 2018 campaign on Oct. 26. All regular season games will be played on Fridays and Sundays, except for the nonSenior defender Taylor Burton conference road contests against South Dakota and Idaho State which are scheduled for Thursdays. The Mountain West Tournament will run from Oct. 30 to Nov. 3 in San Jose, Calif., hosted by 2017 regular-season champion San Jose State.

Wyoming Soccer Facilities

The Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex is one of the most attractive soccer complexes in the nation. It is located a block east of the Wyoming Athletics Department, has a view of the beautiful Laramie Mountain Range to the East and is surrounded by mature pine trees. The complex seats 1,500 fans for soccer as well as for track and field. The complex is named for Louis S. Madrid, a former Wyoming track letterman who competed for the Cowboys from 1952 through 1955. Thanks to a generous gift from the Madrid estate, as well as contributions from families and fans honoring eight Wyoming track athletes that were tragically killed in a 2001 car accident, a track was constructed around the perimeter of the soccer field in the summer of 2006. The track, named the Memorial Eight Track, is named in memory of those eight track athletes. Beginning in the fall of 2006, the Louis S. Madrid Complex became the outdoor home to the Wyoming track and field team. The Madrid Complex has been friendly to the Cowgirls as they have won more than 65 games in its 17 year history. The Cowgirl soccer team now has the luxury of an indoor practice facility. In the fall of 2007, construction was completed Wyoming’s new Indoor Practice Facility, located adjacent to Jonah Field at War Memorial Stadium. The field is mostly used by the Wyoming football and soccer teams but ultimately benefits all student athletes at Wyoming. The facility was constructed at a cost of $11 million, and includes approximately 80,000 square feet of practice area. The field is covered with Desso Challenge Pro 60, a state of the art artificial surface which was also installed at Jonah Field at War Memorial Stadium in the summer of 2005.
