2020 - 2021 SEASON
Hope is your superpower. Don’t let anybody or anything make you hopeless. – Bryan Stevenson
2020 2021 Dear Arts & Lectures Friends and Family, Well, here we are. I’m writing this in July, confident that what Arts & Lectures provides to our community is even more meaningful now than ever: we entertain, educate, inspire. Each of those elements has its own urgency these days – we desperately need to be awestruck, amused and entertained. Issues around education and learning are at the forefront now. And inspiration! Oh, how we need to be inspired. So we are moving forward with live on-stage performances and lectures six months from now. You may think we are overconfident, but our confidence is born of understanding and salted with hope. We know that our basic human need to gather together to laugh, learn, be uplifted (OK, I’ll say it again: to be entertained, educated, inspired!) means we will gather as soon as we can, and it is the role of Arts & Lectures to create opportunities for our community to do just that.
1
And we have hope. I’m not talking about cross-your-fingers hope, I’m talking about eyes-on-the-prize, push-ahead-to-victory kind of hope. It’s gut knowledge that we will survive and we will succeed. But others have said it so much better than I. Journalist Nick Kristof, who will be here on May 20 with Sheryl WuDunn, said recently: “So let me introduce a new thought: ‘hope.’ Yes, our nation is a mess, but overlapping catastrophes have also created conditions that may finally let us extricate ourselves from the mire.” And while we mourn the recent death of civil rights leader and U.S. Congressmember John Lewis, we’re inspired by his life of hope and how real hope spurs us to leadership and action: “We must be headlights and not tail lights.” Arts & Lectures promises to be headlights. With our new House Calls program we’ll be gathering online this fall, but please mark your calendars to join us this 2020-2021 Season!

“Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness.” – Archbishop Desmond Tutu
And now this… Dear Santa Barbara, The COVID-19 pandemic continues to threaten our communities, and has disrupted our ability to gather in theaters, concert halls and other communal spaces. But we believe there is magic on stage, and in coming together to share arts and ideas we sometimes find our better selves. Together. It is what we do and who we are. Our mission? To entertain, educate and inspire. Will we do that all year long, online or on stage? Yes! We’ll take advantage of whatever platform is available, and work creatively to maximize the experience – as always. In planning a return to live events, we are being respectful of artists and audiences, and mindful of public health guidelines. Meanwhile, we hope you will seize the opportunity to engage in new ways with the artists and speakers in our House Calls digital series, coming in September. With heart and hope,

Introducing This is a moment of reckoning. As a nation, we are confronting evidence of inequality that reaches every corner of society. Arts & Lectures has a history of bringing complex issues to the forefront. Now, we are spearheading an in-depth look at systemic racism from every angle, including abolition, underlying conditions, reparations, criminal justice and more. Interdisciplinary and cross-departmental, this season-long series engages leading activists, creatives and thinkers to expand our understanding of racism and how race impacts society, and to inspire an expansive approach to advancing racial equality.

Mon, Oct 12 / 5 PM SPEAKING WITH PICO SERIES “Literature is a powerful craft, so we have an obligation to take it seriously.” – Barbara Kingsolver
Among the most relevant, engaged and original chroniclers of our times, Barbara Kingsolver is the beloved author of The Poisonwood Bible, Animal Dreams, The Bean Trees and nearly a dozen other bestsellers. Her work consistently explores human resilience in trying times, tackling themes such as love, connection, family, meaning and grief. Kingsolver’s compulsively readable books have won the National Humanities Medal, the Dayton Literary Peace Prize and the Orange (now Women’s) Prize, and she was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. Her most recent novel, Unsheltered, tells the story of two families, in two centuries, navigating what seems to be the end of the world as they know it. Her forthcoming book of poetry, How to Fly, offers poems about transcendence, and finding breath and lightness in life and the everyday acts of living.

Cheryl Strayed in Conversation with Pico Iyer photo: Derek Shapton
Thu, Dec 3 / 5 PM SPEAKING WITH PICO SERIES
In her life as well as her writing, Cheryl Strayed is an example of how to keep the faith when it seems like all has failed. In her bestselling memoir Wild, Strayed offers harrowing and hilarious stories from her solo 1,100-mile trek on the Pacific Crest Trail and the personal journey that led her there. Her inspiring story taught us how we bear the unbearable, how we move from grief and anger to acceptance and how we keep walking even when it seems impossible to stand. In her popular (and unorthodox) advice column “Dear Sugar” on The Rumpus, she encourages her audience to live large, love hard and be brave enough to break their own hearts, and she offers radically empathetic advice as co-host of the WBUR spinoff podcast Dear Sugar Radio. She is also host of the New York Times podcast Sugar Calling, featuring her conversations with renowned writers. Strayed’s Wild was adapted into an acclaimed film starring Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern. She is also author of the bestselling books Tiny Beautiful Things, Brave Enough and the novel Torch. Her essays have been published in The Best American Essays, The New York Times, Washington Post Magazine, Vogue, Salon, The Sun and elsewhere.

Among America’s premier ballet companies, Chicago-based Joffrey Ballet is committed to artistic excellence and innovation, presenting a unique repertoire encompassing masterpieces of the past and cutting-edge works. The cornerstone of their wide-ranging program is Tony Awardwinning choreographer Justin Peck’s youthful and vigorous The Times Are Racing, set to music by Baltimore electronic music wizard Dan Deacon. Opposing sides of Israeli choreographer Itzik Galili are evident in his neoclassical pas de deux Mono Lisa and his theatrical trio The Sofa. The reflective and exuberant Bliss! shows Stravinsky’s range as a composer as well as the choreographic prowess of Stephanie Martinez, the first Chicago woman of color to create a work for this company. Created for The Joffrey, Andrew McNicol’s Yonder Blue “gives a sense of awesome wonderment” (Chicago Tribune). Famed British choreographer Liam Scarlett’s hypnotic and alluring Vespertine is a sensual powerhouse production that incites audible gasps of delight.

Sitting in chamber group format dressed in formal evening wear, the eight-member group reveals the beauty and vacuity, the pompous and the trivial, the moving and the amusing in popular and highbrow music. Davóne Tines, lauded as a “depths-plumbing bass-baritone” by the The New York Times, is building an international career commanding a broad spectrum of opera and concert performance. Their new multimedia collaboration, Everything That Rises Must Converge, was born from a shared desire to understand themselves as the children and descendants of refugees and slaves. As Mann documented Mr. Ma’s journey, the two developed a friendship rooted in their shared belief that culture can connect us in our pursuit of a better future.
