The Wait Is Over. This is a time that calls for Optimism, Resilience, Courage and Vision. Santa Barbara needs Hope, and Arts & Lectures is uniquely positioned to respond. A&L’s 2021-2022 CREATING HOPE programming initiative has already inspired our community with presentations by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, chef José Andrés and author Anne Lamott. We will continue to inspire, through shared experiences with thought leaders, creative problem solvers and arts visionaries who will guide us forward. CREATING HOPE programs strengthen human connection, promote emotional well-being, joy and compassion, and envision positive change.

Dear Friends, The Wait Is Over. Fueled with hope, we give you Arts & Lectures’ 2021-2022 season of performances, lectures and special events. Writing to you about hope remains a tricky business. When we launched our CREATING HOPE programming initiative in spring 2021, we stepped forward with programs to bring hope to our campus and community. And we remain deeply committed to this endeavor, as you’ll see reflected in the events throughout this brochure. We’re conscious that things are rapidly changing and our wish is to accommodate as much of our community as possible. An at-home live stream option will be available for many events this season for those of you who cannot attend in person.
Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit
Last year, we dug deep into systemic racism with our acclaimed Race to Justice series. This year, we’re widening the scope to look at injustices in a broader context, in our Justice for All series with public policymakers, courageous changemakers, and thoughtful writers and artists (see pp. 8-9). Please take a look at Soul of America (pp. 14-15), a salute to the many threads of truly American music, and Classical Greats (pp. 12-13), which showcases the familiar artists you want to hear from again and again. Plus special events with Jason Isbell and Lucinda Williams, Silkroad Ensemble and a holiday spectacular with She & Him. We’ll also welcome back two of America’s greatest dance companies: The Joffrey Ballet and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, each presenting two separate programs. Secure your tickets now for all four nights! (You know I will.) And if dance is new to you, don’t miss the Ailey company’s performance of their iconic work Revelations (see pp. 44-45). Because that, my friends, is CREATING HOPE.

Full-time, currently-enrolled UCSB students get significant discounts on single tickets, and free admission for select events. Student-rate tickets will be available starting September 8.
Buy with Confidence At-home Options Last season, virtual events were an essential way to stay connected. Going forward, we envision at-home viewing options as a complement to – but not a replacement for – the in-person experience. To that end, many 2021-2022 events will include a live streaming alternative (available with regular ticket purchase).
Returns & Exchanges With changing public health guidelines, we want to make buying tickets as easy as possible and provide you with the certainty that your investment in Arts & Lectures is one we take seriously. We’ll continue to offer flexible ticket returns and exchanges for the 2021-2022 season. (See page 71 for details.)
Health & Safety As we return to theaters and live events, the well-being of our students, patrons, artists, staff members and community is paramount. Protocols for attending in-person events will be developed in conjunction with evolving state, local and university health guidelines, and we appreciate your flexibility as these are updated over the course of the season. Visit www.ArtsAndLectures.UCSB.edu/SeasonFAQs for the latest information about protocols. Prices printed in this brochure are subject to change.
We look forward to welcoming you back to live events!

Kinan Azmeh, composer, clarinet Kevork Mourad, live illustrations, visuals Thu, Mar 31 / 8 PM / Campbell Hall “Kevork Mourad’s live sketches combine with Kinan Azmeh’s clarinet to create a whirlwind of images to mirror the seven years of war that have made their country unrecognizable.” Reuters Home Within is an emotional accounting of home in a time of conflict. This audio-visual performance, conceived by Syrian composer and clarinetist Kinan Azmeh and Syrian-Armenian visual artist Kevork Mourad, is an impressionistic reflection on loss, longing and the impact of tragedy on our sense of home. Rather than follow a narrative, the artists document home within specific moments in Syria’s recent history, using the counterpoint between image and sound to establish a sense of sustained urgency and continued hope for both their homeland and communities around the world.
