AAEP Fellowship Recognition Update
The American Academy of Emergency Physicians (AAEP) provides recognition to specific fellowships that have achieved a level of training for physicians to demonstrate competency and mastery of the specialty. Today, the AAEP recognizes 12 programs, has 3 sites in the application process, and we continuously receive inquiries for recognition.
We are proud to report that while this year had its challenges due to COVID-19, the AAEP inspectors and external affairs team were able to pivot to offer virtual inspections and hybrid initial inspections. With improved communication with Fellows, we have seen an increase in applications for the written and oral emergency medicine exams. While the 2020 oral exam was canceled due to COVID-19, forty-four percent of this year’s candidates are Fellows from our recognized fellowship programs. Also, sixty-three percent of this year’s new written exam applicants that are eligible are Fellows from our recognized programs. Completion of an AAEP recognized fellowship is one of the ways for physicians to become eligible to apply for Board Certification in Emergency Medicine (BCEM) exam.
