COVER STORY The April 2022 cover features Isabella Tree at the Knepp Estate in West Grinstead (although this photo was taken closer to Dial Post). Issy is accompanied by her amazingly compliant dog, Milo, at a treehouse from where white storks could be seen in the distance. It wasn’t the most glorious day for pictures, but the wild backdrop does complement the wild nature of the land. The Knepp Estate operates a pioneering rewilding project, with longhorn cattle, Exmoor ponies and Tamworth pigs among the free-roaming herbivores. Recently, the estate launched its own range of frozen food, which could change the way we think about and consume red meat. Other cover contenders included Paul Copeland at Mulberry Bush in Slinfold and Charlotte Vohtz at Green People in the Carfax. PHISHING TRIP
Notes from the Editor: Ideas for James Bond’s Next Mission
A few days ago, I sat down and enjoyed the latest James Bond film, No Time To Die. I don’t think it requires a spoiler alert if I tell you that Bond gets chased around the cobbled streets of an Italian town (which are just wide enough for a car and include a variety of tricky obstacles and parading townsfolk without ever leading down a dead-end) before his Aston Martin gets shot up by the bad guys. One has a glass eye, so you know he’s particularly evil. Later, Bond sneaks on to an island lair (which is quite a bit like the one in The Incredibles) to face the main baddie before he kills millions of people with nanobot technology for reasons that aren’t entirely clear. Enjoyable as it was, the enormity of the plot doesn’t leave Bond with many places to go. You can’t get any bigger in heroism terms than taking down a nanobot fanatic on an abandoned missile island. So, next time around, I wonder if we might see 007 in his development years, taking on the day-to-day bad guys that give the human race a bad name. Like email scammers. Some email scams have become so familiar that they’re kind of amusing. Like the one where Jim Davidson tells you how he bounced back from bankruptcy by investing in Bitcoin, or the Nigerian prince
who has no other way of transferring his inherited millions other than to randomly select you to help him. We tend to believe it’s only the elderly or otherwise vulnerable that fall victim, but that isn’t the case. If you’ve been conned out of money and feel embarrassed about it, you shouldn’t. Even Facebook and Google lost $90m to nothing more than a fake invoice ploy, orchestrated by a Lithuanian in his bedroom. The only difference is that the tech giants had the means to hunt him down. That’s not the case for most of us though and until recently, I could understand why the James Bonds of this world wouldn’t care too much about chasing down the people behind cryptocurrency scams supposedly endorsed by Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis. For starters, it’s unlikely his pursuit would take him to beautiful destinations like Venice or Istanbul. However, I think that with the recent Ukrainian-themed scams in our email inbox, these online hackers have sunk to new depths that are now worthy of the super sleuth’s attention. While most of the world was united in its support for Ukraine – donating blankets and food to refugees, waving the flag in its towns and cities, pledging money to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) fund - the scammers were plotting ways to use the crisis to make money through
‘phishing’ schemes. It is astonishing to think that as images of families being separated at the border were beamed across TV screens, someone somewhere was building a fake website to ensure that money pledged to help feed and clothe these people was instead transferred into cryptocurrency accounts to line their own pockets. Unfortunately, Ukraine’s government was an unwitting contributor to this problem, as in a plea for funding, it tweeted its own Bitcoin and Ethereum addresses, giving crypto-scammers the blueprint to set up fake websites. While we watched civilians fleeing their homes as Russian shells exploded around them, someone somewhere was taking delivery of blank T-shirts that they could print Ukrainian peace slogans on, falsely claiming that profits would be passed on to victims. So, I hope that in his next outing, James Bond forgets about evil nanobot geniuses hiding in volcanoes and instead embarks on a mission we can all get behind: to take down email scammers. Hopefully, most of these bad guys wouldn’t be armed either, so Bond could come up with more inventive ways of disposing of them, like squashing them in fabric printing machinery, all accompanied by a smattering of Roger Moore-style quips.

CHILD’S PLAY MULBERRY BUSH CELEBRATES 25 YEARS IN TOYLAND
21
Paul Copeland, Managing Director of Mulberry Bush (©AAH/Alan Wright)
Mulberry Bush sells traditional and innovative toys, gifts and games for children. The Slinfold-based business, which recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, has despatched more than two million toys across the years. While the business continues to expand by offering personalised products, the family-run firm has stayed true to its ethos. AAH met Managing Director Paul Copeland to find out more…
When was the business founded? My father Jonathan Copeland and stepmother Shirley founded Mulberry Bush in 1996. He had been made redundant by Sun Alliance and was considering his options. His cousin established a mail order company, so my father thought he could run a similar business focusing on toys. What kind of toys? From the outset, the focus has been on traditional toys, gifts and games. They wanted to sell the kind of toys they had played with as children. At the time, plastic toys and action figures were dominating the toy market at the expense of high quality, traditional wooden toys that have been around for generations. Mulberry Bush wasn’t interested in fads and that remains the case. We look for niche items that you might not find on the high street and that’s why we don’t sell Disney, Lego or comic book toys. They take up a big slice of the market but in doing so create opportunities for businesses like ours to operate.
When did you join the business? I came in 12 years ago, after working for ten years at Rolls Royce. When I left university, I must confess that I couldn’t see a future for a mail order toy business, but it continued to grow. I moved my family back to Horsham and by the time my father and stepmother retired, I had a good understanding of all aspects of the operation. How do you choose your toys? Most of the business relationships we have with suppliers have been established through trade shows. There are toy shows across the UK and a major show in Nuremberg which we attend. We look for toys for children up to the age of twelve, which meet our standards and ethos. Some are well known names like Melissa and Doug, while others are new companies looking for

opportunities to promote their products. We work with Le Toy Van, which makes wooden toys and dolls houses (see previous page), BigJigs Toys, which offers traditional wooden railways, puzzles and play sets, Great Gizmos, which makes dinosaur excavation kits and educational toys, and we even have great coding toys for older children.
A child’s name is stitched into a soft toy (©AAH/Alan Wright)
There always used to be a toy that could define the year, be it Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Tamagotchi. Does that still happen? Absolutely. Fidget spinners and loom bands are recent examples and in the past year or so there’s been a strong demand for L.O.L Surprise! But fads come and go and we tend to avoid them. We don’t want to buy 5,000 items of something only to see it fall out of fashion overnight, as is what happened with loom bands!
What are your bestsellers? It’s traditional items like baby walkers, as babies will always need to learn how to walk and how to pile up bricks. Often we find that these toys get passed down between siblings or cousins, and because they give value for money, the family return to us for other toys. Wooden farms, dolls houses, rocking horses and wooden railways are classics too. We are also seeing a resurgence in the popularity of occupational toys. costumes for fire chiefs, doctors and vets. Children are definitely more interested in space again too, especially since Tim Peake went to the International Space Station, with toy rockets and astronaut outfits selling well. How have toys changed over the years? The most notable change is the improvement of safety standards. There are very strict levels of safety testing now and you don’t hear as many negative stories about dangerous products as you used to. Those you do hear about are usually items sold through auction sites, or cheap, unlicensed imitations of popular items. How has the growth of the internet impacted your mail order business? Mail order remains a vital part of the business, but we do have to consider the volume of catalogues we print and distribute, as it’s expensive. We have loyal customers, often older people with grandchildren, who buy from us regularly as they like good, old-fashioned customer service. We also sell online and Google advertising is a key aspect of the business, as most younger people shop in this more price-driven way. The combination of the two methods works well for us. You also sell a lot of personalised items... We took over a company called Letterbox in 2013 and brought in their range of personalised items, such as pencils. Since then, we’ve expanded the personalised range to include designs from unicorns and flamingos to football and dinosaurs. We can print these on pencil cases, aprons, notebooks, soft toys, drinks bottles, ponchos, wallets, towels, backpacks, cups and placemats. They’re very good for children as they help identify their belongings at school or playschool. We have modern printing equipment which means we can personalise a much wider range of items. We even have hand-made Mason Pearson hairbrushes in pink or lilac lettering, each one painted by hand. Have you ever been tempted to open a traditional toy shop? We used to have a small shop in a cabin at Newbridge Nurseries, but that was lost when the car park was extended to accommodate more customers. We would never say never when it comes to the shop idea, but with business rates being as high as they are and with our business going in a different direction online, we are further away from a Mulberry Bush store on the high street than we’ve ever been. For now, our plans are to continue doing what we always have: offering good quality toys that there will always be a demand for.

ORGAN Focus on Green People
This year, Green People celebrates its 25th anniversary, although it only recently become a fixture in Horsham’s Carfax. Here, founder Charlotte Vohtz talks movingly about the inspiration for the brand and how her daughter’s memory lives on through its range of natural products...
The story of Green People begins in 1994, three years before the company was even founded. Charlotte was working for a pharmaceutical company in Denmark, in a role which required collaboration with dermatologists. However, when it came to finding skin care products to treat her daughter Alexandra’s eczema, she couldn’t find anything that yielded positive results. “I was advised to apply steroid creams and lotions to reduce
29
IC GROWTH her skin irritation,” says Charlotte. “But Sandra’s (as she was best known) skin was fragile and nothing I tried offered a long-term solution. When we moved to the UK, I had the chance to do something different with my life, away from pharmaceuticals. I have always been interested in natural health and organic products. As a child, my mother gave me ice-cold baths and used seaweed on my skin, so it was in my blood! I decided to make organic products to see if I could create something that would help my daughter.”
Setting Standards
Sandra’s eczema and digestive problems worsened during her teenage years and she had unusual symptoms, like stretchy skin and clicking joints. Charlotte sought varied medical opinions, but became frustrated by the lack of a diagnosis. She removed all products containing chemicals from the family home, suspecting they were contributing to the eczema. They switched to organic food, cut dairy and citrus fruit from Sandra’s diet,
and even carpets disappeared in case fabrics were the cause. It was while researching for her own product range that Charlotte learned that many products labelled as “organic” or “natural” were not as good for the skin as they made out to be.
Charlotte said: “I researched the ingredients and found that some so-called “natural” products contained less than 1% natural ingredients. It was a similar story with organic products, because legislation at the time only covered the food industry.
“So, my first aim was to establish a set of standards that could be applied to personal care products. In my view, this was just as important as food products, as lotions are applied directly on to the skin and yet they contain chemicals. I approached the Soil Association and although it took some time, eventually new standards for organic cosmetics were introduced. Soon after, the Organic Food Federation also established certifications for beauty products.”
“We use the strapline “nature and science in balance” as there’s a lot of science behind what we do.” Hard Sell
Chantelle Hill-Anderson at Green People (©AAH/Alan Wright)
Green people was founded in 1997, with Charlotte making products at her home in The Haven (she has since moved to Horsham). The small-scale operation included organic balms, with lavender or hemp used as base oils. The balm had helped Sandra, while family and friends had responded positively too. Encouraged, Charlotte developed the range to include hair and body bars. However, finding a manufacturer to make the relatively small number of products required was difficult, and Charlotte couldn’t afford to take a financial risk on bulk orders. A dairy farming friend in Denmark stepped forward to help and their partnership continues to this day, with more than 150 Green People products now available. But success didn’t happen overnight, as there was less demand for organic healthcare products in the 1990s. Even finding a single shop to stock her products was difficult.

Charlotte recalls: “The first shop to sell Green People was The Natural Way in Piries Place (now Stay Sharp Barbers). When I first enquired, the owner told me to come back next Tuesday. I did, and he said the same thing again. “Come back next Tuesday!” The third time, he said he’d stock my products the next time I went in. I stepped outside and realised he hadn’t said “next Tuesday,” so I walked around the block and poked my head in. When I told him that he didn’t specify a date, he laughed and agreed to stock us. That was the beginning!”

Alexandra Kay is remembered at the Carfax shop (©AAH/Alan Wright)
Remembering Sandra Green People was soon stocked in specialist shops in London and Guildford, but it wasn’t until October 2021 that Charlotte opened her first shop in the Carfax. However, the opening was not a celebratory occasion, as tragically, Sandra passed away only months earlier. In 2018, she was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a rare condition that affects connective tissues. Her condition gradually worsened and she sadly passed away in June 2021. Charlotte said: “She's in a better place now and will always be with us. She was a talented artist, having gained a degree from Brighton University. We have some of her paintings up in the shop and there’s a memorial bench at St Mary’s Church too. We also sell Alexandra Kay products (her full name) which feature a logo she designed. Because of her condition, the range has 100% natural oil blends including Time to Sleep (with lavender, bergamot and frankincense), Time to Smile
(lemon, cedarwood and sweet orange) and Time to Relax (patchouli, lemongrass & lavender). Those are her signature blends.” Charlotte was recently interviewed by Crew Radio, a station set up by flight attendants to promote feelgood music, wellness and positivity. The station has a number of presenters or “crew” who volunteer their time to discuss a range of topics. One of these is Steph McCann, owner of Horsham-based business No.1 Health Coach. Charlotte’s emotional story struck a chord and led to the station raising funds for Ehlers-Danlos Support UK.

Steph said: “We were really moved by the story and felt we should donate some of our proceeds to a related charity. Since the interview, I’ve been into Green People regularly, even organising collaborative events as our businesses complement one another. We’re both trying to help people live healthier lives.” 31

Healthier Lives Green People makes products for people of all ages, with specialist ranges for men, babies, children and even pets. The skin care range includes anti-aging cream, soothing moisturisers and face wash, as well as shampoos, conditioners, shower gels and deodorants. There’s a 99% natural toothpaste for children with mandarin and aloe vera, and an eczemafriendly soothing baby salve. Another important part of the range is sun protection, says Charlotte. “Lots of people suffer from rashes or skin irritations when they apply sun lotion. The ones you often pick up on the high street can clog the pores and have ingredients that can cause dermatitis. Why rub these into your skin and cause irritation when there are products made with natural ingredients and still offer sun protection? We use the strapline “nature and science in balance” as there’s a lot of science behind what we do, as that’s my background” “It’s easy and cheap to make a product mostly consisting of water. If you buy a bottle of shampoo for a few pounds, the likelihood is that it’s 80% water. We can’t sell our products at that price, because we use aloe vera, which is known for being rich in vitamins and minerals. We only use the inner gel of the plant (rather than the outer rind or skin, which contains irritants) and that gives our range a soothing, moisturising feel. A big part of our journey has been trying to help people understand what’s different about what we do. It’s difficult fighting against major companies that claim their product is natural, when in fact it may contain a very low percentage of natural ingredients.”

Isabella Tree on the Knepp Estate (©AAH/Alan Wright)
BORN TO BE WILD Red deer and fallow deer graze on the Knepp estate (©Knepp Wild Range)
CAN KNEPP’S MEAT RANGE INSPIRE POSITIVE CHANGE?
The Knepp estate is home to one of the most successful rewilding projects in the country. Having been intensely farmed for generations, longhorn cattle, Tamworth pigs, Exmoor ponies and red and fallow deer now freely roam the 3-500-acre estate. Knepp Castle is home to Charlie Burrell and Isabella Tree, journalist and author of the best-selling book, Wilding. AAH met Isabella to discover how the pioneering project could inspire an environmentally-friendly revolution in meat production…
Tamworth pigs (©Knepp Wild Range)
Natural Selection The success of the rewilding project today owes much to the unprofitability of arable and dairy farming on the estate. For generations, the Burrell family had toiled with low-grade agricultural land on the heavy Sussex clay. Fresh out of agricultural college, Charlie Burrell (who took over the estate from his grandparents in 1987) had ambitious plans to revive its fortunes. Taking over the handful of remaining tenancy farms that remained, he used modern agricultural methods in an effort to turn a profit. However, he was fighting a losing battle, with unproductive

land producing low crop yields. Most of what was grown was only good enough for animal feed and after 17 years, it was time to consider other options. One idea was to “re-wild” the land. Isabella said: “It sounds unromantic to admit, but we weren’t thinking only of the benefits to nature when we started the project. It was ultimately about the bottom line and we couldn’t go on losing money. Selling the land wasn’t an option, as it has been in Charlie's family for 200 years. So, we decided to work with the land, rather than battling against it. That’s when we hit upon the idea of giving it back to nature.”
English longhorn (©Knepp Wild Range)
35

Pioneering Project The transition began in 2000, when the estate’s dairy herds (which had consistently been placed in the top 10 in the UK) were sold, along with agricultural machinery. The question turned to what animals to accommodate. Knepp was inspired by similar projects on the continent. In Portugal, safer habitats had been created for wolves and the Iberian lynx, while bison had been reintroduced to Romania’s Carpathian Mountains.
The purple emperor butterfly thrives (©Knepp Wild Range)
Isabella said: “Even then, rewilding projects in Europe had shown that large, free-roaming herbivores were the keystone species. They were the triggers for re-establishing habitat and bringing dynamism into an ecosystem.” “Thousands of years ago, Britain would have been home to free-roaming aurochs (the extinct wild ancestor to domestic cattle) and tarpan (an extinct wild horse), as well as bison, elk, reindeer, wild boar, with beavers in the rivers. We’ve lost some of these species, but their descendants behave in much the same way.”
“Instead of tarpan, we have Exmoor ponies, and English longhorns instead of aurochs. It is illegal to release wild boar into the countryside, so we have Tamworth pigs instead. These free-roaming herbivores are essentially the managers of the entire estate. Rewilding is really about sitting back and letting nature do its job. If you let boom and bust scenarios play out, unexpected things happen and that’s when you see the magic.”

White Storks have been reintroduced at Knepp (©Knepp Wild Range)
Purple Patch Initially, 750 acres was given over to rewilding, but that figure soon doubled and by 2009, the project covered almost the entire 3,500acre estate. And after twenty years, the magic is there for all to see.
Little owl (©Ned Burrell)
With red and fallow deer also introduced, the variety of keystone species has led to the creation of a range of habitats, supporting an expanding ecosystem. Birds thrive on the estate. Nightingales nest in oversized hedges, while all five of the UK’s owls have been seen there, including the little owl, which gorges on dung beetles that now proliferate across the land. In 2020, white storks that had been successfully
reintroduced at Knepp hatched three chicks. The story made headlines nationally, as it was the first recorded breeding in the UK for 604 years. But it isn’t just birds revelling at Knepp. As the land regenerates after decades of agricultural cultivation, insects are flourishing too. The rare scarce chaser – a blue-eyed dragonfly – has returned, there’s been a huge increase in beetle variation, and Knepp now boasts the UK’s largest colony of purple emperor butterflies. Isabella said: “The big herbivores feed differently and this creates habitats. The ponies have nippy incisors to chomp the tops off thistles; longhorns use their tongue to tear clumps of long grass; Tamworth pigs use their snouts to rootle for earthworms and have even been known to dive for swan mussels in the lake. By disturbing the vegetation in different ways, they are inadvertently creating opportunities for other species of plants and animals of all sizes.”

“The result of these natural battles is that you have dense, prickly vegetation where nightingales can nest, thick cover for small mammals, beetles feeding on organic dung, birds spreading seeds across the estate and herbivores trampling them into the soil. It all helps to create a mosaic of complex habitats, which is rocket fuel for biodiversity.” “This has benefits to the wider area that we didn’t foresee. Increased vegetation improves the air quality. The estate now holds on to huge volumes of water during heavy rainfall, protecting farmland, roads and property downstream. Also, water from surrounding farmland gradually flows into
Knepp, where the restored soil filters out fertilisers and other pollutants. All of this has largely unseen economic benefits to everyone.”
Lockdown lure The popularity of Knepp has increased dramatically in recent years. The estate runs ‘safari’ tours, while a glamping and glamping site. However, it was during lockdown that Knepp’s popularity soared, with families enjoying its footpaths and seeking out wildlife. With hundreds of people visiting daily, this presented a dilemma.
Isabella said: “We are aware of the need to get people reconnected with nature. We want to encourage ambassadors for the future of conservation and the best way to do that is to give people opportunities to experience the natural world up close. But equally, we know that low-level disturbance has a massive impact on the feeding habits and social interactions of wildlife. So we need to have areas where wildlife is left alone. You're far less likely to have nightingales where dogs are sniffing around. But if areas to either side of the footpath are left undisturbed, then you'll hear them. Using footpaths makes the rest of the landscape wilder.” 39

Maintaining Balance While the original purpose of the rewilding project was to stop losing money, its success presented Knepp with a useful new revenue stream: meat production.

Culling the animals is necessary to control herd sizes, explains Isabella: “In a natural environment, there is a constant battle between vegetation and animals, which needs to be balanced. You don’t want vegetation dominating, as that eventually leads to closed-canopy woodland, which is undynamic in biodiversity terms. Some people think planting trees is the answer to all our problems, but it isn’t. Trees might capture carbon, but they don’t promote biodiversity.” “You also don't want to have too many animals, as they will stop any trees and thorny scrub from growing and that will result in equally species-poor grassland, like the over-grazed agricultural systems that are commonplace throughout the world. To maintain balance, we need to cull every year and we do that with consideration to the social structures of the herds.” “Because we don’t need to supplementary feed the animals or provide them with buildings, this is a sustainable, almost zero-carbon form of meat production, with none of the animal welfare problems of intensive farming systems.”

A cut above Previously, Knepp meat was sold through local butchers and even through the organic label range at supermarkets. However, to tell the story of the rewilding project and its pasture-to-plate ethos, Knepp Wild Range has been launched, with beef, pork and venison sold directly to customers. The range was chosen by The Times as one of the 33 best luxury foods to buy online, describing Knepp as a “champion of sustainable farming techniques.”
“Because we don’t supplementary feed the animals or provide them with buildings, this is a sustainable, almost zero-carbon form of meat production.” Isabella Tree
The new state-of-the-art butchery uses advanced humidity controls, with meat hung and dry-aged on the bone before it matures further after cutting. The meat is then frozen in a CUBO2 smart refrigeration system, which has almost zero climate impact and is the largest of its kind in the UK. It is packaged in fully recyclable boxes with sheep’s wool insulation to keep the meat frozen for up to 72 hours. As well as popular cuts including rump and sirloin, Knepp is keen to promote lesser-known cuts too. Ian Mepham, Development Manager at Knepp Wild Range, said: “We are all about nose-totail eating, valuing every part of the animal to leave no waste. We are helping to revive traditional uses for offal and introducing modern cuts, such as spider steaks.”

“The ‘chuck’ cuts would normally be used for slow cooking, like stews or pot roasts, as it’s more muscular. But the Denver steak is cut from the shoulder blade and is quite tender, making for a delicious, pan-fried steak. We use whole loins of venison and the navel of beef for an unusual twist on bacon too. Both cook and crisp beautifully.” “As our animals are not fattened unnaturally on grain and protein, the meat has a dense, rich flavour and that natural diet comes through. The Tamworth pigs gorge on acorns in the autumn, giving the pork a strong, oaky taste similar to wild boar, quite unlike the pale white meat you get from intensively farmed pork.”
Beef sausages (©Knepp Wild Range)
However, critics argue that low-intensity rewilding projects such as Knepp do not offer an effective solution, as there isn’t enough land to meet global meat demand. Isabella said: “Could we provide enough meat through rewilding systems alone? Probably not. Rewilding projects like ours are never going to cater for intensive food production, as the meat is just a small by-product of a system designed for nature restoration.” 42
“However, one way you can increase meat production is through regenerative agriculture. This is where animals are moved around the land and are still pasture fed. It’s not the same as rewilding, but it is organic and it is nature-friendly.”

Pastures new Red meat is increasingly under attack, because of intensive farming methods used around the world. Herbivores are often fattened up on grain and high-protein supplements, producing a type of fat that is not only bad for them, but contributes to diabetes, obesity, heart disease and high cholesterol in humans. Knepp believes its healthier, pasture-fed approach presents a new direction and could bring about positive changes in the wider industry.
but were delighted that they could now buy red meat they could trace from field to plate. They’re now planning meals to introduce meat into their diet.” “Some people buy meat from supermarkets and I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with that, but the world can’t sustain us all eating red meat every day. We not only need to eat less of it, but also think seriously about where it comes from.”
Carbon copies Ian said: “Customers are not only concerned about where their meat comes from; they're asking how the animal lived and died. How was it fed? How far did it travel to the abattoir? How was it hung? We’ve even had vegans buying from us, as they can trace the animal’s life journey and understand our ethics. One customer said that her family had been vegan for 17 years,
In the wake of her best-selling book, Wilding, Isabella has written articles for leading national publications. Writing for The Guardian, she has challenged the view that humans should switch to a plant-based diet to fight climate challenge and argued that - done the right way - meat production can help reduce carbon emissions.
“We don’t know how much meat could be produced if the world turned to regenerative agriculture, as the research hasn’t been done yet. But alongside other initiatives that are gathering pace, such as insect farms, they can contribute to positive change and bring an end to the disastrous industrial ploughing processes involving chemicals and fertilisers, which have been destroying the planet for generations.” “The key to new food systems is whether they can sequester carbon. Certainly, regenerative agriculture does that. By moving towards pasture-feeding systems that contribute to biodiversity and capture carbon, we can help climate change rather than contribute to it. Knepp ticks all those boxes.” Further information: www.kneppwildrangemeat.co.uk WORDS: BEN MORRIS PHOTOS: ALAN WRIGHT/KNEPP ESTATE/NED BURRELL

STRIKING A CHORD HORSHAM FOLK CLUB MAINTAINS TRADITIONAL WAYS
Horsham Folk Club meets at the Normandy Centre in Denne Road, Horsham, every Sunday evening. Formed during a folk revival inspired by artists such as Martin Carthy, Peter Seegar and Bob Dylan, the club has survived countless venue changes over more than half a century. Today, it remains true to its traditional roots, but can it appeal to a new generation? AAH met chairman and banjo player David Algar, bass and concertina player Dick Streeter, mother and daughter singers Cathy Barclay and Sarah Yarwood, and club founder and musician Dave Toye to find out…

Dave: I helped start the club in the summer of 1969 at the Station Hotel, with Lofty collecting entrance money. More than 50 years later, we’re both still here. It followed the demise of the Horsham Song Swappers, which met at the old Albion Hall. On our opening night we welcomed Strawbs, who went on to be a successful prog rock band. Dick: Sussex has a rich history of folk music with the likes of Ralph Vaughan Williams making some of the first recordings. We try to keep the memory of the town’s folk legends alive, including Henry Burstow, Lucy Broadwood and more recently “Old” Harry Mousdell.

Dave: The club was one of many launched during the folk revival of the 1960s. Before moving to Horsham, I played at Redhill Folk Club on the same night as a young Paul Simon. Art Garfunkel sat on the floor and got up to join him for the last number. The night man first landed on the moon, we booked an expensive guess and hardly anyone turned up! Gradually, folk’s appeal waned and we were losing money. Lofty and others kept the club going at The Swan on West Street (now the entrance to the shopping centre) and later The Anchor, The Queen's Head, The Nelson, Horsham Cricket Club and finally the Normandy Centre.

Dick: I started coming along in the early 1970s when we met behind The Anchor (now the Anchor Tap) on East Street. There was a blues club there too at the time. When the pub changed hands, some of us formed a barn dance band and hosted John Barleycorn Nights (named after a folk song) at The Queen’s Head on Brighton Road. That has evolved into what we have now, with the band playing a few songs at the start of each night before we open up the floor for anyone to perform. Then once a month, we welcome a guest act.
KEVIN GRIFFIN CARS
David: I first came along as a schoolboy. My sister, who’s a year old than me, dragged me along when it was behind The Anchor. I started playing the banjo at a bluegrass festival in Wadhurst, which used to be held a few times a year. They encouraged young people to learn an instrument and perform and that’s what we do at Horsham Folk Club too. There’s always the chance to stand up to recite some poetry or sing a song. I play the
ukulele too, singing songs by the likes of George Formby. I don’t imitate his voice though, as that was very much of its time! Dave: I still perform in Sussex pubs, both as a solo singer and with folk bands, including Okee Dokee. I recently wrote a song called Boring Ordinary Fields, which made local news headlines as it upset Horsham District Council. It was about the proposed development at Buck Barn. When it comes to guest acts, we all have different tastes within the folk genre. Tonight’s headline act Bob Fox isn’t my cup of tea, as he’s a traditionalist singing tunes heralding from the north-east. I personally prefer folk revivalists - the likes of John Martyn and Burt Jansch. David: We try to offer variation. Bob has been on the circuit for many years and is always well-received, as songs like The Whitby Tailor get everyone involved. One of the great things is that anything can be turned into a folk song, as long

Act fast to avoid more interest rate increases With so much uncertainty over interest rate rises, it makes sense to review your mortgage frequently in order to keep your repayments as low as possible. However, you need to be aware that we’re seeing rates being withdrawn with little or no notice. This hasn’t happened for quite a while, but it’s certainly back with abundance. It’s a bit like a race around Horsham to find the best petrol prices, before the garage increases them!

daughter, Sarah, grew up listening to folk music and now I enjoy singing alongside her. Family groups often work well together as their voices complement one another, so we’re now working on an album. Tonight we sang Thirty Foot Trailer by Ewan McCall, but we also love American folk music by the likes of Stephen Foster.

Until your full application is submitted, nothing is secured. The markets are volatile currently and thus lenders need to act quickly when their cost of borrowing funds change. We’ve seen the Bank of England Base rate change again recently. If you are currently on a fixed-rate mortgage, you will be sheltered from any rises to the Bank of England base rate until your deal ends. If however, your fixed rate is due to end in the coming months you may be concerned about potential future rate rises. For those on a Tracker Mortgage, most lenders will have passed on the recent rate increase almost immediately. You may also see this if you are on the lender’s Standard Variable Rate (SVR) which tends to be much higher than the average tracker rate. A good and experienced whole of market mortgage brokerage should help you find the right mortgage deal for your circumstances and could potentially save you £1,000s in unnecessary repayments. There are still plenty of great fixed rate mortgage deals available right now, including 95% mortgages and specialist lenders who can help borrowers with more complex needs. But don’t miss out. The interest rate averages are a lot higher in March than they were in January and are suspected to increase again in April.

movement now, with artists exploring new angles. The Wilderness Yet sing beautiful harmonies, Kate Rusby is a fantastic singersongwriter, while the Unthank Sisters have their own take on folk (their song Magpie was featured in a beautiful scene for BBC comedy, Detectorists). Cathy: This is the first time I have stood up and performed since before the pandemic and it feels good to be back. We sang a couple of times on Zoom during lockdown through the Covideo Folk Club on Facebook. It was a good way to keep singing when we were “bubbled” together but it’s not quite the same as singing live.

even though young artists inspired by folk music are emerging all the time. It's a shame, because it's an ideal place to play, get some encouragement and learn from experienced musicians. The club has a close association to Broadwood Morris, which is celebrating its 50th year, as well as other Morris Dancing sides. I am a longserving member of Broadwood and it’s a similar story there. When the side started, most of us were in our twenties, but now it’s all the same faces and very few young people seem interested now.
Dave: I think part of the problem is that folk isn’t entertaining enough. I mentioned people like Simon & Garfunkel and I don’t think that level of talent is out there now, but folk clubs can be guilty of booking well-known acts on the circuit, rather than emerging singer-songwriters who might appeal to a fresh crowd. Sarah: Folk festivals still attract big crowds and singalongs. They have younger audiences too, as they have new acts performing. There’s more fusion in the folk

GETTING A G SCOTT MCKAY DRIVES FORWARD WITH GOLF BUSINESS Scott McKay comes from a family of golfers, but his passion has always been in the workshop rather than the golf course. After many years working at clubs in Slinfold and Rookwood, he has established his own business, SMAC Golf Repairs. Here, Scott describes his journey…
I am a third generation golf pro. My dad, George, turned professional at the age of 17 having won everything as a teenager and played in the Open, as well as representing Great Britain and Ireland in the PGA Cup in 1978. I didn’t grow up with the same passion for golf as my younger brother, who was a more naturally talented player, but circumstances led to me falling into a career in the sport.
My dad played on the tour in Scotland and I was spending a lot of time playing and caddying, I took my PGA apprenticeship at Glenbervie Golf Club in 1991. We moved south when he was offered a job at Slinfold Golf & Country Club. We set up a workshop offering customised fitting services for golf clubs and it was very busy. Then in 1996, I left Slinfold to work at Rookwood Golf Club in Horsham.
Initially, I was one of the club’s professionals too. I enjoyed the coaching aspects, but never really enjoyed playing. Even though I was a scratch player, I didn’t enjoy the competitive side of the game. You had to play a certain number of qualifying events every year just to keep your PGA card and it’s hard work. It’s a big step from being a good amateur to a mediocre professional, but a giant leap from there to become a tour professional. I had neither the

GRIP time or the will to do it and stopped playing professionally in 2001. Whenever I was on the course, I couldn’t help but think that I could be in the workshop, repairing half a dozen clubs. Looking after the pro shop and custom fitting was what I enjoyed most.
Gradually, my role at Rookwood changed as different management companies came in. Having been Deputy Manager, I became Retail Manager and my focus was more on the shop. Eventually, the repair workshop closed completely and it stayed
that way until I was approached by Golf Pride about offering fitting services. We became a certified Golf Pride Grip Centre and I realised how much I had missed the hands-on work of repairs.
Lockdown was painful. First of all, we couldn’t do anything and then when we did reopen, the demand was crazy as golf was one of the few things people could do. However, we weren’t allowed to sell anything in the shop, so if people needed new spikes for golf shoes, there was nothing we could do. The

pandemic gave me a chance to reflect on what I wanted to do and I had a strong desire to do something for myself. So, that’s what I did. The Golf Pride certification has always been in my name, so I decided to establish SMAC, which stands for Scott McKay Advanced Clubmaker, but is also the noise of a club hitting a ball! I moved the business to a shed in my garden. Golf Pride is one of the major brands in golf. Whatever clubs you play with, they are likely to have grips made by specialist companies such as 2Thumb, Lamkin and Golf Pride. Although I am Golf Pride certified, we stock and fit other leading brands too, including Grip Master (which produces luxury leather grips), G-Rip and Winn Grips. As well as grips, we offer shaft repairs, a spike replacement service, and sell a range of accessories and second-hand clubs. Another recent addition is golfing trophies, recycling wooden clubheads and placing them on plinths. 54
There are pro shops out there offering repairs and grip services, but what makes me different is that I have skills built up over a long time. I am old school, as I learned from my dad, the old fashioned way! I recently celebrated the 30th anniversary of becoming a professional and now I’m working in my shed, but I couldn’t be happier. How safe are your savings? Tom Reed, Financial Adviser at Coole Bevis Wealth Management Limited, looks at how you can ensure that your savings are protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS). With investments put away in savings accounts, investments and mortgages, you’d assume that there is some kind of protection in place. But exactly how safe are your savings in the event of an authorised financial services firm going bust? That’s exactly what happened during the 2008 banking crisis, and UK taxpayers had to pay out £4.5bn to the people who had saved their money with Icelandic bank, Icesave. You’ll be happy to hear that there is a safeguard in place for such an occurrence that can make such drastic means unnecessary, depending on which banks are affected. The Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) was established to provide you with a level of protection. Up to £85,000 worth of cash savings are covered per individual, per financial institution, to be exact.
Jargon busting What does it mean by ‘per financial institution‘? The FSCS only applies to funds that are saved within a financial institution with a banking authorisation. This means that it’s likely that not all of your bank accounts, or even all of your banks, are covered. If you have savings of £85,000 or more with two different banks who are owned by the same institution with just one authorisation, you’re only covered for a total of £85,000. On the plus side, there is a measure in place to protect temporary high balances. Should you, for example, sell a house or receive inheritance, you will be covered for up to £1m for six months for some funds.
Actions you can take If any of this raises concerns, there are things you can do to optimise your protection: 1. Find out which financial institution owns your bank: In recent years there has been mergers such as The Co-operative Bank and Britannia, amongst
Call: 01293 227670 / 01903 534587 Email: tomreed@coolebeviswm.com www.coolebeviswm.com
many others. You should regularly check which financial institution your money is held within. There are online tools available to help with this such as on the FSCS website (www.fscs.org.uk) 2. Stay within the limit: If you are with two banks under the same banking authorisation and your savings with those banks exceeds £85,000, it’s worth considering transferring the excess into an account with another bank. 3. Open a joint account: If you don’t want to spread your savings across banks, a joint account with your partner will essentially double your coverage as the FSCS covers you per individual. 4. Think twice about offshore banking: Although the higher rates of interest may be attractive, banks outside the UK may not be covered by the FSCS.
How can we help? We work with the UK’s leading Asset Managers and Investment Institutions with one goal in mind; to create a risk-based plan designed to grow your wealth, but most importantly without exceeding the level of risk that you are prepared to accept. Please get in touch if you would like to discuss options to maximise your savings and investments or visit our website to find out more about the range of services we can offer.

BAILEY’S BESPOKE CRAFTS LEATHER GOODS & WOOLLY HATS
So, who’s this then? This is Tristan Young, who along with close friend Peter Bailey set up Bailey’s Bespoke, selling hand-crafted goods. What kind of goods? It started with “trawler” woolly hats in a range of natural tones, from burnt mustard to orchard green. The range has since expanded to include leather goods such as wallets, belts, laptop protectors and even keyrings. An eclectic mix… That’s because the range combines both men’s skills. Peter had made a handful of woolly hats and the quality of them impressed Tristan, a friend from Tanbridge House School. “Peter’s hats were simply too good to be giving away,” says Tristan. “Not only were they hand-made, but each hat had a double layer of yarn, which gave them extra warmth and comfort.” It was at this point that Tristan offered to help his friend. With what, exactly? With selling the lovely hats Peter was making. Tristan used his experience of e-commerce and graphic design, leaning on his skills as a videographer, photographer and web designer to build the brand. It took a while to gain traction, but Bailey’s Bespoke started to pick up sales on Etsy, a website specialising in hand-made items and crafts.
When was this? The business launched at the end of 2019, shortly before COVID. Since then, Peter has been living in Scotland and plans to stay there for the time being. However, the two continue to collaborate. In lockdown, Tristan developed his own crafting skills, learning how to design and shape leather goods which are now sold under Bailey’s Bespoke. Presumably easier said than done… It required a lot of trial and error, as Tristan explains. “I spent a lot of time and money trying to source the right leather for each product. When you’re making belts, you need flexibility, but the leather must be durable and be able to support the buckle. Leather for wallets needs to be robust, but not too thick that it can’t be shaped to a compact size. And you also need to make sure leather can be stitched in a way that not only makes them last, but complements the design.” So, what makes Bailey’s Bespoke items different? They make every product from scratch, controlling every element of the process from the first stitch to sewing on labels. All of the leather goods are made in a local workshop, with just one wallet taking an hour to craft. With time, Tristan hopes to increase the bespoke element to create one -off pieces. “We’d like to offer buyers the chance to not only choose the type of leather they want, but personalise an item by selecting from a range of fabrics for the
inner linings of a wallet, or choosing the buckle and brass rivets for a belt. Already, we’re speaking to a local artist about creating a range of vibrant designs, so we can offer truly unique items.” Sounds expensive... Rather than making throwaway accessories that soon end up in a bin, Peter and Tristan are targeting a different market. The items are aimed instead at people wanting high quality, long-lasting goods

that will be cherished. Tristan says, “We believe in items that last, like the hand-me-down sweater from your dad, or the fishing knife your grandad gave you. They show age but remain in working order.”

Like a family heirloom? The story of the business is an important part of the Bailey’s Bespoke brand, from how the friends first discussed the idea over a pint in the pub, to the attention that goes into each piece, to the packaging made from recycled material. Tristan hopes the story doesn’t end there though. “I know someone who received one of our wallets as a best man’s gift and on the wedding day he dropped it in a hedge, presumably after a few drinks! There was a scratch across the leather, but now every time he sees it, the wallet reminds him of that day. We like those stories as we want our products to be part of a person’s journey.” A brand for life… Sort of. As Tristan points out, premium leather ages well, with the tone gradually changing with time and blemishes only adding to its character. “A word often used in the industry is patina, the thin layers that form on the surface with age. Leather ages beautifully and changes over time to reveal more shine and lustre. While our items might not be Gucci or Prada, they do have character that improves with time.” WORDS: BEN MORRIS PHOTOS: ALAN WRIGHT/BAILEY’S BESPOKE Further information: Etsy store: BaileysBespokeStore baileysbespoke.co.uk

MODERN STYLES DEMONSTRATE CHANGE AT HORSHAM FLOWER CLUB

Flower arranging remains a popular pastime in the Horsham District, with several clubs based in its towns and villages. However, the pandemic has hit membership numbers and younger people are pursuing other hobbies. Can contemporary floral designers inspire the next generation and spark a revival? We meet members of Horsham Flower Club during its monthly meeting to find out…
Horsham Flower Club is a member of NAFAS (National Association of Flower Arranging Studies). The Sussex area is well represented, with clubs also established in Warnham, Henfield, Steyning, Storrington and West Chiltington. Membership allows you to access members’ days at other clubs and attend NAFAS training courses too. Mambers can also be a part of big events, such as Flower Power, organised by Sussex NAFAS clubs. Despite this abundance of groups, the popularity of flower arranging is waning, says Chair Nancy Hubbard.
“There are 21 flower arranging areas in the country and Sussex is among the strongest, but we need new faces. We have 38 clubs in the county, which sounds a lot, but three have recently closed and COVID has hit membership numbers across the board. Just a few years ago, we had more than 70 and now we’re a fair way short of that. People are out of the habit of going out and some have lost confidence too.” “Most clubs will tell youit’s hard to attract younger people. Most women now work and when they get home, they’re still having to look after their family. It used to be the case that they’d drop their children off at school and then have free time for social hobbies, like flower arranging. It’s a good thing to do, as we run workshops, demonstrations, NAFAS events, and of course the social side is important.”

Gaenor Circus, Floral Designer (©AAH/Alan Wright)
Floral Designers The club meets ten times a year (one meeting being the AGM) in Horsham and on most occasions there is a demonstration by a floral designer, who is given an allowance to work within. The most recent demonstration was by Gaenor Circus. Gaenor lives locally and is a Sussex NAFAS floral designer, having formerly qualified as a florist. She travels across the region to show her arrangements, with contemporary ideas including sunflowers in a milk churn, exotic hat-stand displays and even a dramatic floral fireplace. “The demonstrations take a lot of planning, as I like to offer variety in each arrangement, using seasonal plants that give people ideas that they can take away and implement in their own homes. The theme of this talk was ‘rediscovering ancient skills,’ so there’s a lot of research behind it too, as stories add an extra element.” “To some people, flower arranging is old-fashioned and it’s difficult to shake that association with church flower arranging, as that’s what most tend to
think of first. But it’s not just about that. We encourage people to be inspired when it comes to arranging flowers for a whole host of venues and occasions. I may use big mechanics to show them off in a visually striking way, but they’re often quite simple ideas that people can use on a smaller scale at home.”
Inspiring Ideas Like most members, Sue Oliver (Treasurer) takes inspiration from the demonstrations and workshops and introduces new ideas to her home. “I love having plants around to brighten up the place, but it’s very easy to buy a bunch of flowers, put them in a box or vase and be done with it. I find the true enjoyment comes when you play around and experiment, and that’s why I enjoy the contemporary ideas.”

“Flower arranging can be very traditional, with church-inspired arrangements that are neat and symmetrical. But modern styles can be more expressive and demonstrators like Gaenor use containers or stands to show off a varied range of plants that 63

might trigger a new idea. These demonstrations and the occasional workshops we run are important for the social benefits too, as they can be a highlight of the month for some. But we need to attract new members as events cost money and the more members we have, the easier it is for the club to afford them.”
Competitive Streak The club holds monthly competitions for its members, who can arrange flowers on a particular theme. The number of entrants varies, with many preferring just to enjoy the social side. However, for Jenny Blythe, winning adds to the enjoyment. Sue Oliver (©AAH/Alan Wright)

“I must admit, I get quite competitive about it! Points are awarded each month and at the end of the season, the person with the most points wins the overall trophy. This month, I have entered an arrangement of blue and yellow flowers, because like everyone else I’ve been thinking a lot about Ukraine. This was my small way of showing support.” “I first came along 12 years ago, but I was reluctant at first as I’m not someone who usually gets involved in ladies’ clubs. But there’s always an interesting demonstration and then you can talk about the things you can do in your own home or garden. We all have different favourites when it comes to flowers, but I still enjoy traditional, church arrangements as I make them for The Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation in West Grinstead.”

Social Aspects Chris Denne (Vice Chair) was someone who would buy flowers during her weekly supermarket shop and do little else besides put them in a vase. It was only after meeting floral designer Louise Mosey (during an archery lesson, of all things) that Chris attended a flower arranging workshop. “My eyes were opened to the design aspects and now I take the practical skills I learn at the club and use them at home. I'm not involved in church flower arranging, so for me the enjoyment comes from being able to buy a bunch of supermarket flowers and do something new and modern with them. The floral designers we hear from have some very interesting styles and the NAFAS magazines give us other ideas from all over the world.” “The workshops are great too and I’ve learned how to make things like Christmas wreaths. There are a lot of flower clubs around and I’d encourage people to try one, as it’s a pleasant, sociable way to spend an afternoon with cakes, tea and some lovely flowers!”
