The August 2019 cover features Michael Nugent at Chapeau! Brewing Co in Redkiln Close, Horsham. Being a brewery, it isn’t the tidiest working environment in the world, but Toby thought the beer barrels - in Chapeau’s own colours would make a nice backdrop for the brewer’s photo. The idea has worked for AAH before - at Firebird brewery in Oct ober 2013! Other contenders for the cover included Zach Hodges at Horsham Lawn Tennis Club and images of Lodge Hill Activity Centre in Puborough.

Notes from the Editor

I don’t know anything about sleeping rough, but... There’s a stand-up comedy routine about the Loch Ness Monster that has stuck with me. It’s by Stewart Lee, who I wouldn’t assume readers to be aware of. Nonetheless, it’s in my comedy compilation on YouTube, sandwiched between Peter Cook’s ‘Teaching Ravens to Fly Underwater’ and George Dawes singing ‘Peanuts’ on Shooting Stars. In the sketch, Lee says: “I don’t know anything about biology, zoology, geology, geography, marine biology, cryptozoology, evolutionary theory, evolutionary biology, meteorology, limnology, herpetology, palaeontology or archaeology, but I think... ...what if a dinosaur had got in the lake and lived there for a million years.”

thinking things when I see people sleeping rough. Things like ‘I’m not going to give you money as you’ll just spend it on drugs or alcohol.’ Or ‘Why don’t you get off your backside and find a job?’ Or ‘You can’t fool me by reading a book, like you’re normal!’ Then there are the times when I tell myself that it’s only my own will to succeed that has kept me out of a shop doorway.

is involved in many other schemes that benefit the community. Horsham Matters nominates rough sleepers, refers them to the Greater Change organisation and helps them raise enough for a rental deposit or perhaps pay for a training course to help them find a job. The council is asking us to resist making cash donations to individuals and instead use contactless donation points, which are being dotted about the place, to go to this fund.

If you’ve never had such thoughts, then you’re a better person than me. But I suspect I’m not alone in having a cynical viewpoint and sometimes treating homeless people with unqualified suspicion. It is for this reason that a new idea might just work...

I thought about this sketch when I decided to write on the subject of homelessness. I don’t know anything about sleeping rough, being evicted by a landlord, running up debts after losing my job, returning to society after a spell in prison, being the victim of domestic abuse, substance abuse, gambling addiction, having my house repossessed, coping with the loss of a spouse, or being kicked out of home as a teenager. But that doesn’t stop me

In a bid to combat homelessness, Horsham District Council’s homeless team has launched an initiative, in partnership with Horsham Matters and Greater Change. The idea is that we donate to a cashless fund which is used by homeless individuals to help them rebuild their lives. The whole service is run on a not-for-profit basis and is facilitated by Horsham Matters, which helps run the Night Shelter in town and

You could argue that this shows a lack of trust in the homeless. ‘Don’t give them the money, as they’ll waste it!’ Maybe it does. But this initiative is - potentially - a great idea. Not because your average rough sleeper would really go and waste any money you toss in their bowl, but because our collective, ill-informed opinions makes us think that they will. A scheme where we can donate knowing we’ll be making a positive difference will give the donator peace of mind. In turn - and far more importantly - this could generate more money overall and change the lives of people living on the street.

More than 700 children marched through the streets on 7 July in Horsham’s first ever Children’s Parade. Organised by Happy Accidents and supported by Same Sky, the parade started at the Drill Hall, Denne Road and finished in Horsham Park as part of Funday Sunday. The parade involved 17 schools, with many interpreting the ‘Art & Artists’ theme in imaginative ways. Kingslea Primary created a giant bust of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, Northolmes Junior turned themselves into Andy Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup Cans, Rusper Primary donned orange costumes and paraded a giant Tree of Life by Gustav Klimt, while Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee was inspired by surrealist Salvador Dali, dressing up as melting clocks from ‘The Persistence of Memory’. Local samba band Boom Tribe led the way, before Boko Olofi took up the beat midway. The event was part of the Horsham District Year of Culture.

Thanks to the generosity of local people, the new St Catherine’s Hospice in Pease Pottage is on track. More than 250 people have supported the hospice’s Full Circle Appeal, including a group of supporters who each made a significant donation to fund the first patient room on the new ward. Long-standing supporters The Ernest Kleinwort Charitable Trust contributed £200,000 and The Verity Waterlow Endowment gave a grant of £500,000. Fundraising would not have been

possible without two people whose generosity helped St Catherine’s realise its dream of a new larger hospice: Bill Bridges, who donated five acres of land and John Shemeld, who left a legacy of almost £6million in his will. The new hospice, scheduled to open in early 2022, will allow St Catherine’s to provide more care when it’s needed most, allow hospice staff to offer respite care on wards and provide more outpatient appointments. www.stch.org.uk\newhospice.

Residents wanting to help local homeless people now have a ‘more effective way’ of donating directly to those living on the street. Horsham District Council’s Homeless team has launched an initiative in partnership with community groups Horsham Matters and Greater Change to help combat homelessness in the District. Greater Change is a non-profit service which makes it possible for people to donate cashlessly to homeless individuals to help them achieve their long term goals and rebuild their lives. The service is to be facilitated by Horsham Matters, which will nominate rough sleepers

and refer them to Greater Change. Homeless individuals, with help from support workers, set funding goals which might include a rental deposit or fees for a training course. Contactless donation points will be set up in areas that benefit from high footfall, including public buildings, shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs. Crates Local Produce in Carfax is among the early adopters. To donate, simply tap a debit or credit card on the donation terminal or pay via Apple Pay. If any local businesses wish to display a donation point, email housing@horsham.gov.uk

The Horsham Time Well Spent event calendar brought a French flavour to Horsham on 14 July, which conveniently fell on Bastille Day. The France at Home market did a roaring trade in Gallic specialities, while a Montmartre style display of painting from HAOS members, a jazz trio and mime artist added to the atmosphere. A working replica guillotine and the 45eme Napoleonic Regiment re-enactment group ably supported by The Children of the (French) Revolution helped bring history to life. Thanks to local car enthusiast Ross Charman and the Citroen Owners Group, an eclectic display of French vehicles filled East Street, with everything from 2CVs and Traction Avants to a rare Alpine and Caravelle. The event was sponsored by Cote Restaurants and organised by Horsham District Council and Horsham Markets by Food Rocks. The next big town events will be Big and Little Nibble weekend on 31 August - 1 September and Horsham AmeriCARna on 29 September. www.horshamtimewellspent.co.uk

ENJOY A NIBBLE HORSHAM SERVES UP FOOD & DRINK CELEBRATION There is no better place to be for food and drink lovers than the Horsham District. Whether you have a craving for carefully crafted cheeses, an avid appetite for ale or a taste for tantalising treats from traders in the local market, this year’s Horsham District Foodie ‘Experiences’ is where you will satisfy your most delicious desires. The Little Nibble inspires visitors of all ages

Sharon Walker is a well-known baker ADVERTISING PROMOTION

Organised by Horsham District Foodies and Horsham District Council, this year we are breaking the mould by promoting the wonderful local food and drink this fabulous district has to offer over the year. From September 2019 to March 2020, in partnership with Taste West Sussex, we are promoting businesses and communities through a variety of foodie experiences. The Big Nibble will once again fill Horsham town with fantastic aromas on the weekend of Saturday 31 August and Sunday 1 September. This year, it doesn’t mark the start of a four-week festival, but a longer promotion of events and experiences celebrating food and drink. Sunday 1 September

has been reimagined as The Little Nibble – School of Food. The focus is on having fun while picking up ideas. A number of themes will be covered with support from sponsors, NFU Mutual Henfield presenting a ’From Farm to Fork’ display, Kinder Living with refill water and tips on reducing food waste, Horsham Vegan Fest presenting plantbased food and drink options and the Council’s Health & Well Being team and partners on hand too. The live demo kitchen will pick up on these themes and also focus on ‘cooking for one’ on a budget. The Horsham Markets street food stalls will be offering plant-based and gluten-free options and will formerly launch ‘The Taste Explorers’ menu options for smaller appetites (and pockets). Some brilliant street theatre acts have been booked which will keep the day firmly on the lighter side, with musical entertainment too. Horsham’s Bus Rally will recreate bus routes of yesteryear with period vehicles displayed at Hop Oast Park and Ride just south of the town and calling at the Carfax bus stops.

Reduce Food Waste, Save Money – Eat and Shop Responsibly! By

Hilary Knight A Taste of Sussex/ Sussex Food Network

You might not think that you waste very much food, but it’s shocking what we have come to think if as ‘normal’. It is reported that nearly one-third of food waste happens because we purchase, cook or serve more than we consume. There are many reasons why we should all be looking at how we shop, cook and eat to not only reduce the amount of food we discard, but also to save money. Did you know that the food we throw away mostly goes to landfill? By reducing food waste, we can decrease greenhouse gas emissions and reduce our impact on the environment. Over the last couple of decades, we have been used to having a massive choice of produce and pre-prepared foods with no food shortages. But if we look to our forebears, we can learn much about real-life ‘Home Economics’. How many people make meal plans for the whole week these days? Are shopping lists a thing of the past? Do you shop for ‘just in case’ scenarios? Just changing a few things in planning your week’s menus and shopping accordingly can make a huge difference to not only wastage but also your household budget. Bulk buying and stocking up the store cupboard can lead to more food waste, so shopping regularly for a couple of days’ food at a time will make a difference. There are so many convenience stores that the need for a bulk shop is reduced. Even better, by buying locally-produced food and drink from farmers markets, farm shops or direct from the producer, you are choosing to reduce food miles. In many cases, buying loose food (especially fruit and vegetables) has the added benefit of reducing packaging and plastic waste. To make a difference to your wastage and your wallet, think about how can you use leftovers or food items than you have been used to discarding. Granny would never have thrown away the breadcrusts, making breadcrumbs to make a delicious coating or topping! Most

people have access to a freezer, so a bag of breadcrumbs will come in handy. Mix with the grated cheese, seasoning and chopped herbs and you have a great topping for vegetables, fish and even chicken. I am not sure granny would have made a smoothie, but this is a perfect way to use up over ripe bananas and fruit. A vegetable smoothie, made with past their best carrots, cabbage, softened celery stalks, spinach leaves and even a cucumber will not only save on waste but give a healthy and nutritious boost to the day. Rather than letting a chicken carcass or meat bones go to waste, simmer them with veggies, herbs and water to make a homemade stock. Or, if you are not a meat eater, make a delicious veggie stock by sautéing vegetable scraps like tops, stalks and peelings with oil, then add water and herbs and let them simmer into an aromatic vegetable broth ready to use in other recipes such as sauces, casseroles and soups. And don’t forget that soft and over ripe tomatoes make a wonderful salsa or tomato sauce.

The Anchor Tap in East Street

Preserving by fermenting and pickling has had a resurgence in popularity and many now understand the health benefits associated with this form of preservation. Back in the day, many households would have a store of delicious preserves, lovingly made home-grown produce from the garden or allotment. Perhaps the most important thing to consider when cooking and preparing food economically is thinking differently. A food leftover is an ingredient to be used imaginatively. Stored well, it will become the ‘just in case’ supper. Granny knew a thing or two!

NEW ERA FOR

HORSHAM 1,000 FANS WATCH AS HORNETS TAKE ON CRAWLEY

Horsham Football Club has cause for optimism as it embarks on a new chapter following the opening of its impressive ground at Hop Oast. A relatively modest crowd of 328 saw Dylan Merchant score the first goal at the Camping World Community Stadium, striking a sweet half-volley in the 27th minute to put the Hornets ahead in a pre-season friendly against Hartley Wintney on Saturday 13 July. Three days later, Charlie Harris and Chris Smith’s penalty ensured another victory, this time against local rivals Haywards Heath. But it was the friendly against Crawley Town on Saturday 20 July that attracted the biggest crowd, with well over 1,000 fans flocking to Horsham’s new ground.

There was a celebratory atmosphere when Horsham defeated their League Two opponents, continuing a string of good results as the club prepares for the league season. There was a minute’s applause for former president Frank King, who would have enjoyed the football on show as Chris Smith and a Kieran Lavery brace saw Horsham win 3-1. Many fans remarked on the new facilities, but for those who have stuck by the Hornets through many challenging years, it’s not before time... “The stadium has been long in the making and yet it all came together very quickly towards the end,” says John Lines, CEO at Horsham FC. “We’ve been running a

timeline on the club’s website, showing work from the first tree felled to the completion of the clubhouse, to where we finally have a home of our own. It’s been far from plain sailing. We’ve had to negotiate choppy seas, but we’ve done that with great support from within Horsham District Council and our construction partners. Once we gained permission to build the stadium, there were very few snags until the point where we were handed the keys.” Horsham’s 1st team were the first to try the new 3G pitch during a training session. A few days later, 100 boys and girls took part in a soccer skills day, part of the Horsham District Year of Culture. Crawley Town F.C have been regular visitors too, as the club is using the facilities four days a week. The team’s professionals have given the

Year of Consolidation There are hopes that the stadium could launch a golden era for the club, hot on the heels of a fine run of form that led to the club’s surprise promotion to the Isthmian League Premier Division via the play-offs. However, manager Dominic di Paolo is

pragmatic about prospects. “The Crawley game was amazing for the club,” he told AAH. “A game like that - with such strong support - gives a boost to everyone involved.” “We've waited a long time to have our own ground and it'll make a big difference. There have been a few teething problems, but it’s a similar surface to what we’ve been used to at Lancing, so from a playing point of view it's been a smooth transition.”

“In terms of expectations for the season, my aim is consolidation. For the first couple of months, we will gauge our performance level, but I have tried to put a squad together to give us a foothold at this level. There is a big jump between the divisions and we must deal with that.” “Last year, we overachieved, as nobody tipped us for promotion. So, we need to cool expectations. We've made good signings and the new boys have the right attitude. Once we start to gel as a

Great Support As well as a main pitch and a second community pitch, there is a new clubhouse with a licensed bar, a kitchen serving up hot dogs (courtesy of award-winning local company Bangers Galore) and the Frank King suite, concealed behind folding doors. Football highlights and archive footage are televised to add to the match day experience. The project has been well supported by local businesses, not least of all Camping World and Lines & James, sponsors of the stadium and first team shirts, respectively. Paul Osborne, Commercial Director at Horsham FC, said: “Support has been remarkable. It’s not been difficult attracting businesses as it’s a great story to be a part of.

“Both pitches are close to being fully booked with only a couple of sessions available on the Community Pitch. We have village teams coming for training, five-aside leagues forming, Chesworth Rovers here on Saturday mornings and our own youth teams playing here too.” “Crawley Town being here four days a week is important. The pitch is very expensive, so we need to make sure it offers value and having a League Two club here provides that. Even if Crawley were to decide to go elsewhere after a year, it will have given us a solid foundation on which to build on.” “What we now need is for the people to vote with their feet and come and support the club. I have no doubt that they will.”

One Club Horsham has adopted a new ‘One Club’ motto and has invested in youth teams with renewed vigor. The new ground coincides with the development of an Under 23 side. In the past, it’s been difficult for youth players to make the

CLUB HISTORY Horsham FC was founded in 1871, though it wasn’t properly established for another decade, playing its first game against Dorking in 1881. The following year, it Horsham FC 1899 helped found the Sussex County Football Association. Horsham enjoyed early success, winning the West Sussex League Championship in 1899-00, 1900–01 and 1901–02, and claiming the Royal Irish Rifles Cup in 1900. After having played at both Hurst Park and Springfield Park, the club secured Queen Street as its permanent home in 1904. The 1930s was a golden age for the club. The Hornets won the County League in 1932, 1933, 1935, 1936, 1937 and 1938, winning the Sussex RUR seven times in that period and the Sussex Senior Cup in 1934 and 1939.

significant leap from the Under 18’s to the 1st team. However, it is hoped the U23’s will create a bridge and see more local talent able to make the step up. Another development on the cards is a ladies’ team. John Lines said: “That’s definitely something we would love to have at Horsham. We must acknowledge that the Women’s World Cup was fantastic and the game is growing rapidly. We have the facilities, so let's do what we can to support women’s football.” “There’s a concerted effort to bring our youth sides here as well, to make this one club, as it’s been fragmented for a long time. Women’s football is key to achieving that.”

Like the Old Days Horsham’s brilliant team of 1936

In 1947–48, Horsham reached the First Round Proper of the FA Cup for the first time, taking a first-minute lead against Notts County before losing 9–1. In 1951, they joined the Metropolitan League and were champions at the first attempt. When the league was disbanded, Horsham joined the Athenian League in 1963. In 1966, they reached the First Round of the FA Cup again, losing 3-0 to Swindon Town in front of a huge crowd of 7,134 at Queen Street. In 1973, Horsham joined the Isthmian League. After some Parading the league trophy in 1952 lean years, the club was promoted to the Premier Division for the first time in 2005–06. That season, Horsham reached the final of the Sussex Senior Cup for the first time since 1979, but were beaten by Lewes 3–1 after extra-time. The following year, Horsham enjoyed a run in the FA Cup, reaching the Second Round Proper. The team secured a replay before losing 6-2 against eventual League One champions, Swansea City.

1966: A huge match versus Swindon

There have been times when Horsham FC has galvanised the town and maybe, such days could be seen again. The play-off final in May was arguably the club’s finest moment in 12 years. On that previous occasion, the club reached the FA Cup Second Round, with a late Lewis Taylor penalty earning John Maggs’ Hornets a replay at Swansea. They lost the tie 6-2, but those who were at the club at the time hold great memories of those two matches in 2007. Swansea manager Roberto Martinez complained about the air-conditioning in the away team dressing room. It was an open window! But there is renewed optimism at the club, reborn under the guidance of Dom di Paolo, as it embarks on new era. John said: “By creating this stadium, there will be high expectations for the coming season as the whole town is buzzing.”

“We had a crowd of 850 at the play-off final and it felt like the old days of Queen Street.”

“We had a crowd of 850 at the play-off final in Lancing and it felt like the old days of Queen Street. Our average attendance at Queen Street was 500 and we’d be absolutely delighted if we could replicate that this year. We’ve maintained a fantastic loyal fan base who have been making the 70-mile round trip to the coast in recent years.” “Now we’re back in Horsham, we’re seeing new faces and old ones returning, which is wonderful.”

SUBLIME NEW LOOK HORSHAM FLAMES RECEIVE KIT FROM APPLIEDFX

The Horsham Flames have taken delivery of a striking new football kit, courtesy of AppliedFX. The Flames, formed by people attending The Butterfly Project in Horsham, play against other specialist and disability teams in West Sussex.

Peter Bedford, Managing Director at AppliedFX, said: “The beauty of sublimation printing is that a kit can be designed without boundaries. You can use full colour images with shadows, tints, blends and have patterns that wrap around the entire body. With only 15 as a minimum

order, everything is customisable, so you don’t need to be restricted to manufacturers’ discontinuing designs. You can come up with your own unique concept, as Horsham Flames have done with their logo. We also have countless design ideas for inspiration.”

Modern Printing The new kit has been created by Horsham-based AppliedFX using a modern printing method called sublimation. This innovative process sees design elements and logos transferred to the fabric of the garment, widening the design possibilities. Colours remain permanent and cannot be washed away.

“In the current climate, sponsors can be difficult to attract, especially as traditional kits are geared towards just one sponsor on the front. With sublimation, you can include several logos, making it easier for clubs to cover the cost of a kit. You can include emblems, player names, numbers and logos for up to five sponsors per kit, making the format ideal for sports teams, clubs and even businesses.”

Multi Sponsors This is demonstrated on the Horsham Flames kit. Yesss Electrical are the main shirt sponsor with Bel Signs and OMS (One Mortgage System) logos on the back and Nightingale Service Centre on the sleeve. Horsham Flames at Horsham FC’s new Hop Oast ground

Specialists in Sublimated Printed Kits The Flames are sponsored by Yesss Electrical, Bel Signs, One Mortgage System (OMS) and Nightingale Service Centre

The newly-formed team are delighted with the look. Richard James, Service Manager at The Butterfly Project, said: “We have many football-mad people coming to our day centre and we have played the occasional match. Last year, it was apparent that the players were ready for a bigger commitment, so we started training at The Holbrook Club. Before long, they were talking about forming a proper team. “Our players wanted a kit with their own identity, so we spoke to AppliedFX and they’ve been amazing. Peter has even attracted sponsors on our behalf. The players designed the whole kit. Look closely and you’ll see that our emblem is the Mockingjay from The Hunger Games! They wanted to look professional and now they do.”

Inclusive Game The Butterfly Project has approached Sussex FA, which is very supportive as it wants to expand disability football. Teams have also been established at the Aldingbourne Trust near Chichester and Dimensions in Crawley (part of Outreach 3 Way) with hopes that a disabilities league can be formed.

“The emblem the players designed has the Mockingjay from The Hunger Games!”

Richard said: “Disability football is coming on leaps and bounds and everyone is behind it as the game needs to be inclusive. Learning difficulties can cover a broad range. We have a young man who is registered as severely partially sighted, so we’re looking at bringing in adapted balls that make a noise. For the players, it’s great to have opportunities to enjoy the game. Our goalkeeper, Brandon, volunteers for car parking duty at Crawley FC, so this is a dream come true for him.” To find out about sublimation printing and branded clothing, call AppliedFX on (01403) 280851 or visit www.appliedfx.co.uk For more on The Butterfly Project visit thebutterflyprojecthorsham.co.uk WORDS: BEN MORRIS PHOTOS: JOHN LINES

SUMMIT Chapeau! Brewing Co in Horsham is gaining momentum with beers inspired by a passion for cycling Cycling would seem to be an unusual choice of inspiration for a brewery. Yet Chapeau! is establishing a following for its range of beers named after riding jargon. Formed in November 2017, the company takes its name from the French phrase for “hats off!” The congratulatory term is synonymous with the peloton. Since then, Chapeau! founders Michael Nugent and Katharine Lee have expanded the range of beers and even open the brewery on Fridays.

Katharine said: Mick has been brewing at home for a long time and reached a position where he could expand and launch a business. We worked at Alpe d’Huez ski resort and would watch the Tour de France ride through, so felt it was a good idea to combine our passion for brewing and cycling.” “We moved into a unit in Redkiln Close, Horsham, and after a slow start, we’ve been building gradually. One element of the business which has really taken off is the Tap Room, which we never envisaged. We open on Fridays

Chapeau! bottled beers include Slip Stream, Hard Yards, Summit, Bonk, Freewheeler and Rouleur

and initially it was a slow burner, with people trickling in. Now, we see joggers and several cycling teams. We sponsor the Unknown Rider Development Team and helped fund a jersey for local group Cycling Companions, who were heading out to watch the Tour de France. So, occasionally they pop in too.” “There’s a nice atmosphere on a Friday. Some come for a drink before heading into town and on the first Friday of every month, Welton’s is open too, so people can cample two Horsham breweries. Michael said: “We didn't expect to take over the world. We haven’t gone for a hard sell as we prefer people to discover our beer and buy it because they like it.” “We did briefly try to push our product, but most local pubs are tied to breweries. We do sell to a few places on the south coast, while The White Horse in Maplehurst and The George and Dragon in Dragon’s Green have been supportive. Horsham Sports Club and Barns Green Cricket Club have had our beers too, which is great as it maintains the sporting association.”

Tour de France Michael and Katharine both balance brewery commitments around full-time jobs as a chef and interior designer, respectively. They hope that, in future, they’ll both be able to focus solely on Chapeau! Brewing Co.

Michael hopes to eventually work at the brewery full-time

The Horsham base offers plenty of scope for expansion if the range of cycling-inspired beers were to become a true tour-de-force. Michael said: “We’re slowly heading in that direction. As a chef, I am looking to introduce food nights at the brewery,

Already, we’ve organised a big night to celebrate the end of the Tour de France and will be planning something similar for the Vuelta a Espana in September.” “For now, we’ll just keep putting out the sign on the old bike that Kat’s mum used to ride her around on when she was a child, and hopefully, more people will visit our Tap Room. Those who do visit give great feedback and presumably enjoy the beer, as they keep coming back!”

THE RED DEER REVIEW: WHITE BRASSERIE’S STYLISH TOWN PUB The Red Deer only recently opened its doors. Yet, in many ways it’s emblematic of Horsham today, a town needing to balance its market place origins with contemporary culture.

Service with a smile at The Red Deer

While some independents find trading conditions tough, we’re seeing an influx of reputable brands looking to expand in affluent areas. So, hot on the heels of Everyman cinema, where you pay a little extra to have drinks brought to a sofa as you watch a movie, The White Brasserie has launched The Red Deer in Horsham. Here, you can sit down and relax with a raspberry and pomegranate cordial in stylised botanical surroundings. No wonder then, that The Red Deer has hit the ground running. Manager Abel Bnouhanna tells us that “literally every guest” has told him the same thing. That the pub is “a great addition to Horsham.” It’s hard to disagree. When Waitrose departed Piries Place, there might have been concerns about who

Several ‘mocktails’ are on the menu

would occupy and invest in such a large unit. It could hardly have worked out any better...

Czech, mate? The first thing to say about The Red Deer is that it looks fantastic. It has two entrances. The Carfax half acts as the ‘pub’ element, with people enjoy a drink away from diners. In the daytime, it feels more like a café than a traditional English pub, with people sipping coffee while working from laptops along the bar. Sadly, there are not currently any local ales available, but for those enjoying a lager, Pilsner Urquell is the logical choice. This Czech favourite, the world’s first pale lager, is served from copper beer tanks into chilled, Bavarian-style mugs. From Piries Place, visitors walk through a pretty arbor covered in climbing plants and flanked by flower beds. Outdoor seats have been highly sought throughout the summer!

Once inside, the dining area is really quite lovely with artificial plants, rustic ladders, botanical art prints and wooden tables and chairs presenting a tranquil aura in a bustling setting. There are 150 covers, but it doesn’t feel like it.

Blanc Magic There is a popular two course menu served Monday to Friday until 6pm for £12. 95 (a third course can be added for £3.50). But we choose to go á la carte, beginning with a selection of dips (spiced aubergine & mushroom, spicy citrus & coriander and saffron mayonnaise) along with two of the four ‘mocktails’ on the menu. The best was the raspberry refresher (pomegranate cordial with crushed fresh raspberries and Fever Tree naturally light Indian tonic) although at £4, a little less ice might offer a little more value for money. Within a drinks menu dotted with botanical illustrations, there’s a wide range of beers (including Brew Dog Punk) and spirits from familiar names, although not from local suppliers. However, The Red Deer does have a sparkling wine from Greyfriars Vineyard in Guildford.

The Red Deer has botanically-themed styling, whilst the Piries Place entrance includes an attractive arbor (top left)

When it comes to the menu, dishes take global inspiration. Abel said: “The menu is mainly French cuisine with an English twist. However, Raymond Blanc (who is a Director of the company that operates White Brasserie pubs and provides creative guidance) travels extensively and these influences are reflected in the menu.”

Manager Abel Bnouhanna

MARTYN EDWARDS

“We have Moroccan lamb tagine, Malabar fish curry and Indian spiced samosas on the menu, which have proven to be very popular. So, there is freedom to introduce new ideas and the training our chefs go through is extensive. Raymond Blanc is a family man and his company has family values. It sounds a cliché, but staff are inspired by their training and want to do their best.”

For Starters... Our server, Dusan, is certainly pleasant and has no qualms about making recommendations for us. So, we plumped for the cheese soufflé (£6.95). Using Wyke Farms cheddar from Somerset, the soufflé was delicious, with a consistent lightly-crispy coating and strong cheddar flavour. We also had a colourful and fresh – if a little uninspired - Moroccan mezze platter (£7.95) with harissa aubergine,

globe artichoke, falafel with coconut cashew cream, houmous, pomegranate seeds, cherry tomato salad and flatbread.

Worldy Wonders The French influence isn’t overly obvious on the menu, with Mediterranean (Moroccan lamb tagine, tomato and feta salad, harissa-glazed aubergine with butternut squash) and British dishes (Cornish beef burger, Jimmy Butler’s gammon steak, pie of the week) equally prevalent amongst a selection that caters for all. However, we did pick a French classic, duck leg confit with citrus sauce (£16.95) with pea puree, medley of peas, broad beans and sugar snaps, heritage carrots, dauphinoise potato with a lime zest confit and citrus sauce. Finely presented, it was a neatly balanced and well-cooked dish, only the sauce needing a tad extra kick. The Malabar fish curry with toasted coconut (£16.95) combined roast hake with spices and coconut milk, grilled king prawn, shallot crisps and coconut rice. Again, it was an attractive,

colourful and enjoyable dish with a pleasingly smooth, mild sauce to complement the subtle flavour of the hake, which was a touch too moist to make it perfectly flaky. The Moroccan lamb tagine (£18.95) is a plate that has other diners asking what you’ve ordered. Served in a traditional earthenware cooking dish with lid, the slow-cooked Cornish lamb on the bone comes swimming in a stew of apricot, golden sultanas and Medjool date, served

with pistachio and almond couscous. A fun, multi-flavoured dish that entertains on that odd occasion when you fancy something different. For dessert, we enjoyed the summer berry pavlova (£7.75) although would sooner recommend the wonderful pistachio soufflé served with chocolate ice cream (£7.50).

A Fine Addition The Red Deer has been open for almost two months now and has certainly hit the ground running. It’s evident that it’s the

kind of establishment that the town centre has been lacking for a long time.

“Sausages Worth Bangin’ on About!”

Bangers Galore is a family run business created by David Bell in 1998.

Abel said: “We have been very well received by the local people. In recent years, there has been much investment in the town centre, whilst new houses have been built with many people commuting to London. For us as a business, Horsham ticks a lot of boxes. “You have seen the quality of our food and how it is presented. We use fresh, sustainable ingredients and have a very engaging front-of-house team. That is what people are looking for.”

In terms of a review, I have enjoyed better food at similar prices – or lower – at other pubs and restaurants in the Horsham District. However, The Red Deer is a beautiful venue, with friendly and helpful staff, offering a contemporary pub and dining experience that feels fresh in the town. Judging by its early popularity, White Brasserie’s arrival has been timed to perfection and is a fine addition.

OV E R T H E THRESHOLD Record Inheritance Tax bills are a reminder of the need for good estate planning. There are few more confusing – or unpopular – taxes than Inheritance Tax (IHT). For older generations, the prospect of paying up to 40% tax on what they leave behind is difficult to contemplate. For some children and grandchildren, grappling with IHT is something they are ill-equipped to do. Yet more and more families are having to deal with IHT. The latest figures show that IHT receipts reached £5.4 billion in the 2018/2019 tax year. HMRC’s latest estimates show a year-on-year increase of £164 million.1 The rise reflects the surge in residential property prices, as well as the strong recovery in other asset values, which has dragged more households into the IHT net. From April 2019, the residence nil-rate band rose to £150,000, for those who qualify, and it will increase incrementally each year until it is worth £175,000 in 2020. Coupled with the fact that the first £325,000 of an individual’s estate is exempt from IHT, this will mean that, subject to certain conditions, a married couple and civil partners could

have a combined tax-free estate worth £950,000 – a figure that will rise to the million-pound mark by 2020/21.2

many options available, establishing trusts* where appropriate; and making use of annual exemptions such as gifting.

Despite this, at the heart of this problem remains the simple fact that IHT could be considered a voluntary tax; the Treasury relies on inertia and people’s reluctance to confront the issue.

If you are uncertain about where you stand regarding IHT and would like to know more about how to prevent much of your money falling into the hands of HMRC, or your local authority through long-term care fees, you should seek advice.

The boost to the Treasury’s coffers is a reminder of the damaging effect death duties can have on families’ plans to create and pass on wealth, and also that there are perfectly legitimate ways of mitigating IHT through foresight and careful financial planning. Glyn Jukes at Horsham Lawn Tennis Club, where he’s been playing for 30 years. He recently won the club’s men's doubles title with Dom Robeson

THE COACHING ACE TENNIS CLUB STALWART GROWS HAWK-i COACHING

Glyn Jukes had to work harder than most to hone his skills with a tennis racket, yet has become synonymous with the game in Horsham. Having first attended Horsham Lawn Tennis Club (LTC) as a nine-year-old, Glyn’s now been involved for three decades as a player, captain, coach and most recently chairman. Wearing a red bandana was as close as he came to emulating his first tennis hero, Andre Agassi. However, Glyn’s legacy has been to inspire thousands of young people to play and enjoy the game. This passion shows no sign of dwindling as his Hawk-i coaching initiative goes from strength-to-strength, encouraging juniors of all ability levels.

PERSEVERANCE Since he first played at Horsham LTC, based at Horsham Sports Club on Cricketfield Road, Glyn has played in junior and senior squads, captained the

men’s first team and for a long time was a dominant force in the club’s own championships. He recalls: “When I started out, I would play against my dad every Saturday evening, then spend all summer helping the coaches and volunteering for club activities as often as possible. A friend who introduced me to the game tried to become professional and entered ranking competitions. I could compete against him, but was never at a level where I could beat him, so I didn’t have the same ambition. I was not naturally gifted, but something clicked when I was about 15 and ever since then all I’ve wanted to do is play tennis. Nigel Allingham, my coach, was a huge inspiration, so coaching seemed the right course for me.”

Adam Boxall at a boys’ coaching session

“Perhaps not being as strong as other players helped me in the long run. A lot of my experiences are based on perseverance and belief, rather than ability alone and these are traits that can be passed on. So, when I see a good Cameron Key

Having attended his first coaching course while still at Collyer’s, Glyn has since run tennis sessions at local clubs, schools and leisure centres across the Horsham District and beyond. As well as coaching at Horsham LTC and at Horsham Park, he has simultaneously enjoyed stints working with pupils at Farlington School and at Billingshurst Lawn Tennis Club. Now, he runs his own company, Hawk-i. Through Hawk-i, Glyn and a team of other qualified tennis coaches organise sessions at Horsham LTC and Horsham Park. It has also recently taken on Southwater Tennis

Club as well, while sessions are held for pupils at infant and junior academies in Southwater. The aim of Hawk-i sessions isn’t only to discover the next Roger Federer or Serena Williams, but to encourage more young people to play. Glyn said: “Our tagline is ‘Instruct, Inspire and Improve’. There isn’t a right or wrong way to play tennis, as there are different ways to help a player reach his or her potential. We have a very talented team of coaches and we all have our own methods. Alex Welton is interested in biomechanics of the game and his Horsham Park sessions are very popular, while Tessa Walder is a vastly experienced coach and is especially good with younger children in the Mini Red Ball classes, where she promotes good discipline.”

Billy Johnson volunteers to help younger players

NEXT BIG THING? Like many sports, it’s difficult for young players to make the leap from junior to senior level. As a result, many are lost to the game. So, Glyn has helped combat this problem by establishing a 4th team at Horsham LTC, comprising solely of junior players. In terms of competition, these are lean years for the club. Currently, the 1st team is competing in lower divisions of the Sussex league. However, the 1st team is looking for a second successive promotion, while the 4th team is blossoming as it develops young players. “Just over a decade ago, membership at the club had slumped to below 150,” said Glyn. “It’s been tough, but now we’re going through a purple patch with about 240 members.”

“In terms of league position, we’re not where Horsham has been in the past. However, by establishing a 4th team, we are seeing more fluidity, with young players progressing through to the top teams on merit. It was perhaps a little static in the past, but now there’s a development pathway.” “Zach Hodges, who is 15, has won the closed Horsham LTC tournament for a second successive year. His target is now to beat the 1st teamers consistently, in the same way he beats me! We have other promising youngsters coming through, so the future looks bright.” “Of course, not everyone can be a superstar. As a club, our legacy has not been in creating the occasional outstanding player, but in moulding a strong club with enthusiastic coaches who will pass on their knowledge. That way, when players take a break for college or university, they can return to a familiar and vibrant club.”

SWIMMING is a life skill everyone should learn. It’s never too early...or too late!

As well as sessions run in association with schools and clubs, Glyn and other Hawk-i coaches are involved in Tennis for Free, a community sports charity. The charity offers half an hour’s free coaching on Saturdays, with another half hour’s playing time at Horsham Park. Sessions can be booked online. Glyn said: “We had 42 people turn up last week, which is fantastic. The success of Andy Murray and Great Britain winning the Davis

Cup made a huge difference the game’s popularity in this country. One thing we’d like to see at Horsham and other local clubs is more girls and female players. At schools, we see an even split. But that isn’t transitioning into recreational sessions, which is strange as women’s sport is otherwise booming.”

“The free sessions are for people of all ages and abilities and we’ve even seen a 92-year-old play. Of course, we’re limited in terms of one-to-one coaching, but they offer a taste of what the fantastic game of tennis can offer.” Hawk-i coaches run a range of programmes at Horsham Lawn Tennis Club including junior tennis squads after school (term time), drop-in pay-as-you-play sessions on Saturday mornings: 9am - mini tennis orange sessions (8-9 year-olds 10am - mini tennis green

sessions (9-10) 11am - yellow ball sessions (11-16) as well as holiday camps. They also provide a range of adult lessons for groups and individuals. Hawk-i are also setting up a programme at Southwater Tennis Club and have established sessions at Horsham Park. https://clubspark.lta.org.uk/ Hawkicoaching WORDS: BEN MORRIS PHOTOS: TOBY PHILLIPS For Tennis for Free sessions visit https://tennisforfree.com)

Lodge Hill Centre in Pulborough has been enthralling visitors of all ages for 20 successful years... Every year, about 28,000 people enjoy the remarkable outdoor activity centre at Lodge Hill in Pulborough. Children and grown-ups alike can experience tunnelling under the ground, go-karting on the ground and a zip wire high above it, in a beautiful, scenic setting. This year the centre celebrates its 20th anniversary. But far from resting on its laurels, Lodge Hill is extending so that even more people can benefit from its facilities.

Lodge Hill was once a private residence and then a hotel, popular for its views of the South Downs. West Sussex County Council later used the site to offer activities to schools and community groups, but in 1998, its funding came to an end. Recognising the centre’s positive impact, the late Penny Hardwick OBE led a group of like-minded people to raise funds to purchase the lease of Lodge Hill.

Matthew Wykes, Chairman of Trustees, said: “Penny was a remarkable woman and somehow raised £1million in just six months to buy the site. The Lodge Hill Trust was formed and the Council sold the freehold for £1, delighted that it would continue to be an asset to the community.” Lodge Hill has continued to expand ever since, improving catering and accommodation as well as introducing new activities to challenge each generation. Lisa May, Chief Executive, said: “Lodge Hill’s aim has always been to provide activities, education and life-building opportunities for children and young people of all abilities and backgrounds. Schools come here for residentials, as outdoor learning is part of the National Curriculum. We also welcome disabled groups, businesses on team building ventures, as well as hosting conferences, meetings and even weddings. It truly is a site for all. Recently, a 92-year-old visited us with a family group and flew down the zip wire!”

MODERN ‘VISION’

Southwater pupils enjoy a day at Lodge Hill

There are options for morning, afternoon and full day visits, or even longer residential programmes that include meals and accommodation. Those staying at Lodge Hill have plenty of choice. As well as Hardwick House and a cottage, there are two woodland lodges (one of which is disability friendly) for those looking for an outdoor experience. Lodge Hill is renowned for its catering too, with children often saying that the food was the best bit of their stay! To celebrate its 20th year, the centre has raised funds to commence work on its ‘Vision Project’. This will see residential capacity increased, while the kitchen will be modernised and two new orangery-style extensions built. Lisa said: “Previously, we haven’t been able to accommodate some large groups. If a school has three classes in a year group, we’ve not had space for them all and they’ve gone elsewhere for their residential.” “We have raised £550,000 in one year through various trusts, foundations and personal donations so that we can provide that extra space. Once the work is complete, we’ll be able to welcome groups of over 100 children, staff and supervisors.” The new look Lodge Hill will include a stilted viewing platform over the side of the hill, behind Hardwick House. By working in partnership with Chichester Planetarium and South Downs National Park's Dark Night Skies project, it is hoped that the centre can host astronomy sessions. Matthew said: “Our idea is to take groups to the Planetarium and in the evening they can use a telescope on the viewing platform to bring space to life. We encourage children and young adults to engage in the natural world, so it’ll be a worthy addition.”

FRESH CHALLENGE Another project now offered at Lodge Hill is the ChallengeU early intervention programme. ChallengeU is a holistic, outdoor activity programme designed for young people who have disengaged with society or education. That can include those who have offended, or are deemed to be in danger of offending. Matthew said: “Young people are referred here as it’s a safe space. We liaise with their families, schools and partner organisations to hopefully get them back on track. Those who complete the programme are rewarded with a trip to Wales where they can take part in rock climbing, kayaking, hiking, camping and other outdoor activities. It’s about giving them a positive experience.

PHONES DOWN But are today’s children as excited by abseiling or archery as they used to be? Or do they struggle to concentrate without technological distractions?

For the pupils and staff of The Limes College, Lodge Hill was a great experience

“The physical and mental health benefits of being outdoors are clear, says Lisa. “The skills children learn - intellectually and physically - are second to none. So, most teaching staff ensure that mobile phones are kept inside during the day. “Fundamentally, children haven’t changed. We see them grow during their time here and we often have teachers reporting back to us after seeing a positive change in an individual or even a group. It’s great when young people take new skills back into their everyday life and demonstrates that we’re helping them become well-rounded members of society.

Fantastic team proud to be ‘Highly Commended’ We are delighted to have been recognised and ‘highly commended’ in this year’s ‘What Mortgage’ awards Best Mortgage Broker category.

This is a great testament to the fantastic team we have and we’re very grateful to all those who took the time to vote for us. We are proud to be in our 28th year in the mortgage sector and look forward to many more in Horsham and the surrounding areas. So, your mortgage is coming to the end of its product term. You may have fixed for an amount of time, maybe two, three or five years. And now your rate is due to change to the lenders variable rate, which in the main, is higher than the rate you are currently on, and your monthly payments are about to increase. But hold on, your current lender has seen the light and decided to offer you some 'fantastic' products to keep you. Even though you are four months out of your product change, they've given you just fourteen days to take the ‘new product’ and stay with them. After this time, they can’t guarantee the ‘new product’ will be available to you. What do you do?

‘You should find an experienced mortgage specialist who may be able to open up a door to a wide range of opportunities.”

Even though some lenders put a deadline on any new offerings, remember most are contacting you three or four months before your product changes, so there is plenty of time to review your options and choose the best rate for you nearer the time. This is a pretty straight forward process to arrange and normally there will be minimal paperwork and requirements.

But sometimes they don’t offer you a product at all! It doesn’t mean they won’t. It just means that you should find an experienced mortgage specialist who may be able to open up a door to a wide range of opportunities available to you. This is the biggest debt you have so take your time, ignore the ‘time pressures’ and ensure you seek advice, so you don’t regret it further down the line.

ON A

Café du Van is a familiar sight on the roads, industrial parks and construction sites of the Horsham District and beyond.

The business is run by Horsham couple Sam and Christie Attfield. Founded in 2010, Café du Van started with one lone vehicle but has grown significantly to become a local success story. Christie said: “My father used to run a valeting company and there was a sandwich van that would do the rounds. One day, he bought all the workers a hot dog, but it tasted awful. He felt he could do better, so he bought a van with a friend, who was our first driver and is still with the

company today. The name came from a picture of a French café called Café du Vin in my parents’ house and it fit perfectly!”

Quick Success The business was an immediate success. Sam joined the team, initially balancing his Café du Van work with a full-time job. He would rise early to prepare sandwiches and spent his evenings cleaning up, while Christie was driving a van on a local route. Eventually, Sam gave Café du Van his full focus and the business has gone from strength to strength ever since.

HOT STREAK FAMILY-RUN FOOD FIRM FINDS SUCCESS Christie said: “We benefitted from the new estates being built. When Wickhurst Green was under construction, I would arrive in time for the morning break and it was incredible. We were serving tea and coffee too, which was time-consuming but a great asset on a building site, and there was a constant queue. At that time, my parents were still helping, so I would call them for extra stock as we often sold out by 10:15am.” “Since then, we’ve expanded around Horsham and have mapped out new routes in

surrounding villages, coastal locations including Hove and Lewes and Mid Sussex towns including East Grinstead and Haywards Heath.” Having started out with only one, Café du Van rapidly expanded its fleet to ten vans. And whereas sandwiches were initially prepared by the Attfield family at home, the company now operates a commercial kitchen at a unit in Broadbridge Heath, employing a small team to prepare food and load the vans.

The owners attribute their success to quality products. Sam said: “We focus on good food that meets the demands of people in Horsham. We serve freshly-made items that we would expect to be served ourselves. “We use lovely multi-seed brown bread and make our own sandwiches, wraps and Paninis, preparing mixes like coronation chicken using fresh ingredients.”

“The growing wholesale side of the business has meant we’ve been able to provide more jobs.”

TARGET TIMBER SYSTEMS Traditional Values using Modern Methods of Construction

“Hot treats like the sausage rolls or cheese and bacon turnovers are made in-house and for the items we source elsewhere, we’re careful to work with the best suppliers. This is highlighted by the popularity of our hot sausage and bacon baguettes.”

Costly du Van The costliest element of the business is in the purchase and upkeep of specialist vans. Each one is modified to include both refrigerated and heated units. The storage area is divided into three main sections. There’s an oven where sausage rolls, pies and pastries are heated, a fridge for sandwiches, salads, wraps, drinks and selected puddings, as well as an area for crisps, confectionary and other items that need an ambient temperature. As very few people are equipped to service such vehicles, maintaining them is expensive.

If you are a Property Developer or Builder looking at Timber Frame structures for Houses and Apartments, or a family looking for their dream Self-build Home Target Timber Systems are here to help. We offer a professional service which includes fully certified design and engineering, supply and erect of factory insulated panels, engineered floor beams and floor deck, roof trusses and bracing along with full chain of custody certification.”

Shelf space is also at a premium, although Café du Van has introduced more variety to meet changing consumer needs. Christie said: “In recent years, the demand for gluten-free food has grown. People are making bespoke orders if they have certain allergies or requirements and that’s something we’re increasingly looking to offer.”

New Opportunities As the delivery rounds have become more established, Sam and Christie have explored other revenue streams for Café du Van. So, it has branched

out to provide catering for business meetings, and wholesale food for cafes and venues. “The wholesale side is expanding quickly, to the extent we’ve employed a new Sales Manager,” says Sam. “We’re delighted to be working with Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens. We visited when it opened and it looked incredible, but we thought we could do a better job with the sandwiches! They were willing to give us a try and liked what we offered. We also now supply the Weald and Downland Museum near Chichester, so this summer we’re taking a high volume of orders. The wholesale business has meant we’ve been able to provide more jobs locally and it’s an area of the business we’d like to develop.”

Keeping Local Sam and Christie are wary of expanding beyond Sussex. Vans are costly to run and travelling too far wouldn’t be cost-effective. They’re also working to ensure that food waste is kept to an absolute minimum.

So, as Café du Van continues to evolve, its owners can reflect on a decade of growth that has bucked national trends. “We look back now and wonder how we managed in those early days,” said Sam. “When we started out, we lived at Clarence Road and would start at 3am, spending hours cutting up chicken breasts and making hundreds of sandwiches. I don’t think I could cope with that now! We have a daughter now and fortunately we have a great team behind us, which allows us more time as a family and to focus on other parts of the business.” “Having started with one van, reaching a point where our little business is turning over £1million is quite an achievement.”

Letters to the Editor editor@aahorsham.co.uk

Bowie is Overrated...like Chaplin! Peter Butler of Billingshurst writes: In response to your comment about my belittling the achievements of David Bowie (Letters, May 2019), maybe I have been a bit harsh, as you have been in condemning the total content of The Daily Mail and – by implication – the thickness of its readers.

my opinion, Frank Sinatra was the greatest entertainer of the 20th century, but I am not bothered that there are other contenders for the crown, such as Elvis Presley and Charlie Chaplin. Again, in my opinion, Charlie Chaplin and Prince are two of the most overrated entertainers of the 20th century. But I should think most people are too busy chatting about Brexit or global warming to think about Bowie’s status…

Possibly, David Bowie will in future be recognised as a 20th century icon and to give him credit, he worked very hard to stay in the public eye and become famous. There are still some people I know who remain fans. He is not as universally acclaimed as – for example – superstars like Freddie Mercury or Elton John. But in terms of talent, record sales and longevity, I would bracket him with George Michael, Phil Collins and Cliff Richard. Sorry if I have offended fans of the above. It is a bit disturbing that David Bowie fans get so upset when they realise that not everybody thinks he was ‘the greatest’. In

Is Charlie Chaplin overrated?

Editor: He’s having a go at Prince now! And poor Charlie Chaplin - he didn’t have a bad word to say about anyone. Well, until the 1930s. So readers, is Chaplin overrated? Might a better actor have done better with that final speech in The Great Dictator? Certainly, questions should be asked of the movie’s hair and make-up department. Music is obviously subjective, but as a Bowie fan, I’m delighted that the Thin White Duke has evidently gone up in your estimations, as you compared him to Shakin’ Stevens last year. Phil Collins is an improvement.

Safeguard our Future by Fighting Airport Plan Sally Pavey of Warnham, on behalf of CAGNE committee, writes:

York and back is 11,138km, which is 2.4 tonnes per passenger. This equates to five times around the world by train,or a 6-minute shower once a day for 12 years. In fact, releasing 2.4 tonnes of CO2 means melting 1,539 tonnes of glacial ice!

Sussex and Surrey community group hits back at Gatwick’s obvious disregard for communities that will be impacted by the huge increases in aircraft noise by their plans to push ahead with increases in aircraft movements off the main runway, use the emergency runway as a second runway and continue to safeguard land for a 3rd runway. All the time, the number of aircraft movements increases, with two runways anticipated to present a 36% increase of movements and a 3rd runway taking movements from 285,000 to 850,000 a year! Any saving by modern planes or modern airspace is completely dispelled by increases in aircraft movements and electric planes are not a reality for any time soon. Aviation is one of the biggest threats our planet faces today and Gatwick Airport management now make it very clear that they have no regard for the damage they are and will do to the planet for future generations or the massive noise increases their plans have for residents of Sussex, Surrey and Kent.

We call upon climate change professionals and campaign groups to turn their attention to opposing Gatwick’s huge plans for unsustainable growth for the sake of community’s wellbeing and the wellbeing of our planet for future generations. With local authorities joining the climate change emergency efforts, it is not surprising that a joint letter has gone from the council leaders to Gatwick to show disappointment in their intended actions. With the government ‘net zero’ announcement, which does not yet include aviation or shipping, we would urge local MPs to oppose Gatwick’s plans, which are on top of Heathrow expansion! Most people will not be aware that a return flight flying from Gatwick Airport to New

We urge residents to make it very clear to Gatwick that expansion of a leisure airport is too big a price to pay for future generations; for our counties that have a serious lack of affordable housing, congested roads and railway service and lacks amenities now to deal with the current population figures. A three-runway airport, as proposed by Gatwick’s master plan, would force a huge increase of workers migrating into Sussex as well as freight and travellers through surrounding counties. It would also spell a decline in air quality; push businesses out of the Gatwick area; force mass housing to accommodate inward migrating workers; and over load amenities such as schools and healthcare. Join CAGNE and oppose Gatwick’s expansion plans to safeguard our future, our county’s future prosperity and that of our planet. www.cagne.org

Dull Signs of the Times J. Smith writes via email: Can someone justify the amount of our Council Tax that spent on the ‘Welcome to Horsham’ signs? Every entrance to town has one and the “welcome” side of the sign is blank apart from wording at the top. They are not even noticeable, due to being green and mostly erected next to greenery. There seems to be a Christmas design on one side and blank on the other. These must be the biggest waste of tax payers’ money, with no thought to the design. Ugly, boring and uninspired - not representative of what Horsham has to offer. Editor: In partnership with the council, I produced a 2018 Events guide. I was asked by HDC to include several of these circular logos. If my memory is correct, the logos were

REVEALING OUR

MEDIEVAL HISTO HOW GLOOMY MEDIEVAL TIMES SHAPED HORSHAM

Horsham Museum & Art Gallery has created some fascinating panels revealing the town’s medieval history. Fragments of historical documents shed some light on how land was distributed after the Battle of Hastings. They were dark times. Not only did people have to fight the plague, but you could be hanged for cattle thievery! However, the period shaped Horsham’s future, with markets established that would still be a fixture centuries later... 1066: Battle of Hastings William, the Duke of Normandy, defeated King Harold II and conquered England. The invasion took place in the present-day town of Battle. The Normans turned the County into a military zone by dividing it in to five rapes, later adding Bramber in Washington,

which included Horsham at the time. This estate was given to the de Braose family.

around this time (between 1075 – 1110) Chennells Brook Castle was built in Horsham. It was destroyed, possibly by 1150, as part of the peace treaty after a civil war.

1073: William de Braose built Bramber Castle. He also created hunting parks and expanded the Saxon parks in St Leonard’s woods.

c.1150: Horsham Parish Church was built. Evidence for this can be found in the tower, west door and north west wall.

1075: Horsham became a manor separate from Washington, as part of a tightening up of manorial land claims. 1086: The Domesday Survey recorded ownership of land. Horsham is not mentioned, but was probably listed as part of Washington Manor, where 70 pigs’ worth of woodland pasturage was recorded. Also

c.1200: Horsham woodland had become a hunting forest, with Knepp Castle supplying the King’s table. The area around Horsham had nine moated castle sites, which were possibly used by lesser nobles for hunting.

castle walls. Further fortifications turned the fortified hunting lodge into a castle. 1279: William De Braose established markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

ORY

1205 – 1206: William de Braose bestowed Borough status on Horsham. The borough of about 320 acres lay to the north-west of the original Horsham settlement. 1230: John de Braose gave Horsham Parish Church to Rusper Priory. The following year, he endowed the church with a house for a vicarage and three acres of land, small tithes, hay tithes and mill tithes. 1233: Henry III (depicted right) granted William de Braose the right to hold a July market in Horsham. The Parish Church was also rebuilt and was consecrated in 1247. 1258: John Maunsell, owner of Sedgwick Castle, was given permission to build

1306: First record of an assize (court) held at Horsham. The Assizes that year dealt with 38 civil cases, 22 criminal cases and 21 pleas of complaint, mostly to do with trespass and assault. Eight felons were found guilty and sentenced to hang, including two murderers, two cattle thieves, an outlaw and three thieves, two of whom were women.

1295: Horsham’s growing importance was shown when Walter Burgeys and Walter Randolf were sent as MPs to Parliament. Four years later, Edward I visited Chesworth on

two occasions.

The Last Hurrah or Summer...

Clouded Yellow Butterfly (Terry Hollands/RSPB)

RSPB Pulborough Brooks

The last hurrah of summer August can seem like a quiet month for wildlife; the bird breeding season over, there’s no more birdsong to be heard and many of our birds are hiding away to moult. Even your garden blackbird seems to have disappeared, or is looking rather worse-for-wear, as it loses clumps of feathers and is in need of refuelling after a busy spring raising perhaps 3 broods of demanding chicks.

1315: During the Great Famine, three thieves were indicted for ‘robbing certain foreign merchants outside Horsham to the west’ of goods to the value of £40, showing that Horsham was growing in importance and attracting foreign traders. 1327: A local iron industry was already established, with 1,000 horseshoes sent from Roffey to Shoreham, destined for the King’s army. Horsham was known as an armament production area. In 1338, 6,000 arrows for crossbows were bought at Horsham to be taken to London. 1346: Horsham appeared on the Gough Map of Britain. South of the Water (Southwater) is first mentioned. 1395: Tomb of Thomas de Braose erected in the Parish Church. Upon his death, the Manor of Horsham passed to the Norfolk family. By 1399, possibly earlier, Horsham leased market tolls from the Lord of the Manor for two marks a year.

1423: Parish Clerk appointed to oversee the business of the church. The core layout of Horsham was defined over next 50 years. 1449: The Archbishop of Canterbury, owner of the Manor of Tarring-cum-Marlpost abutting the borough of Horsham to the west, obtained charter for a market in West Street, a continuation from the area now known as the Bishopric. 1486 – 1487: Canopied tomb of Thomas Hoo of Roffey erected in Parish Church. The following year, Henry VII visited Horsham. 1519: Henry VIII visited Horsham, most probably staying at Chesworth, then owned by Thomas Howard after he was created Duke of Norfolk in 1514. 1525: Tax figures for England and Wales revealed that Horsham achieved the highest increase in wealth in Sussex, rising from 12th place in 1327 to 6th place in this year. Horsham was on its way to becoming an affluent town.

However, with migration underway, a stroll in the countryside can bring you rewards – a green sandpiper with slate grey uppers and bright white tummy following the muddy margins of a pool, bobbing its tail constantly as it goes. A sunny hedgerow might reveal treats such as a redstart, also known as a firetail, perched on top of a fencepost flicking its tail to reveal the flame coloured rump, or a spotted flycatcher darting out on aerial sallies to catch insects. Whilst autumn may already be underway for the birds and many of our wildflowers have now gone to seed, the egg yolk yellow daisy-like flowers of fleabane are at their peak and, despite the name, are appreciated by the many insects who continue to flourish this month. Look for smart marmalade hoverflies with their yellow, black and orange coloured stripes and clouded yellow butterflies eager to refuel after a channel crossing. On the heath, the ling is beginning to flower carpeting the sandy earth in glorious purple and is busy with pollen-laden honeybees. Perhaps summer is still here.
