The Problems Caused by Power Rangers/

We Should All Learn from a Local Tragedy

I

have two sons, including an 11-year-old who catches the school bus every morning and afternoon. There’s a routine to our day, parts of which will be familiar to many parents. My wife and I often have a frustrated hunt around the house for school uniform, moaning as Ăœi w˜>Â?Â?Ăž w˜` ÂˆĂŒ ĂŒĂ•VÂŽi` `ÂœĂœÂ˜ ĂŒÂ…i side of the bed with the shirt still stuffed inside the jumper. Ben and Toby at Horsham Museum Never have I thought about his journey on the school bus. Not even for a second.

But in the last few days, it is something I have discussed with him. This follows my conversation with Paul Vodden. In 2006, Paul’s 11-year-old son Ben came home from school. He was sobbing as he was being called names on the school bus. After a little chat to his mum about it, they shared a hug and Ben went to his bedroom. A while later, Paul found his son. Ben had hanged himself from his LĂ•Â˜ÂŽ Li`° It is of course an unfathomable tragedy and no doubt has had a lasting impact on many people.

ĂŒ LĂ€ÂœĂ•}Â…ĂŒ L>VÂŽ > Â?œ˜}‡vÂœĂ€}ÂœĂŒĂŒi˜ memory for me too. When I was about 12-years-old, I was called by the frantic mother of a close friend at the time, who was in a different year to me at Forest School. He suffered from bullying and had tried to strangle himself with his school tie. I rushed to see him and vÂœĂ€ĂŒĂ•Â˜>ĂŒiÂ?Ăž Â…i Ăœ>Ăƒ œŽ>Ăž°

I enjoyed my time at Forest and have many friends with fond memories of Tanbridge, the school Ben Vodden attended. But we all understand that school can be a dreadful experience for some. You may even recall names and faces from your own school days and perhaps have regrets about

things said or done long ago.

It’s easy to forget the heightened emotions you feel as a child. Everything is so raw. You both love and hate people with an intensity that is only diluted with time. You form closer friendships than you’ll ever experience again >˜` ĂŒÂ…i wiĂ€ViĂƒĂŒ Ă€ÂˆĂ›>Â?Ă€ÂˆiĂƒ ĂžÂœĂ•½Â?Â? iĂ›iĂ€ ÂŽÂ˜ÂœĂœ° And when things go wrong, it can Ăƒii“ >LĂƒÂœÂ?Ă•ĂŒiÂ?Ăž Â?ˆŽi ĂŒÂ…i i˜` Âœv the world. There has always - and may forever be – a survival of the wĂŒĂŒiĂƒĂŒ element to growing up. But that doesn’t mean simple ĂƒĂŒiÂŤĂƒ V>˜½ĂŒ Li “>`i ĂŒÂœ “>ÂŽi ĂŒÂ…i journey less painful for some. Since Ben’s death, Paul and his wife Caroline have campaigned for changes to legislation concerning dedicated school bus journeys. Their motive may be emotionally-driven, but that `ÂœiĂƒÂ˜½ĂŒ “>ÂŽi ĂŒÂ…iÂˆĂ€ >Ă€}ՓiÂ˜ĂŒĂƒ any less valid. Where else, Paul Â…>Ăƒ >ĂƒÂŽi`] `Âœ ĂžÂœĂ• w˜` xä children of different ages, all in one place without supervision? They hoard on to a bus every day, in the sole care of a driver ĂœÂ…Âœ ÂˆĂƒ Ă•Â˜Â?ˆŽiÂ?Ăž ĂŒÂœ Â…>Ă›i >Â˜Ăž medical training and almost certainly cares little for intervening in cases of bullying. /Â…iĂ€i½Ăƒ ˜œ

/6 >˜` ˜œ `iw˜i` structure for reporting incidents. For half an hour, twice a day, it’s Lord of the Flies.

So far, the Vodden family’s research and pleas for political help have fallen on deaf ears. The bus companies, the education authorities, the transport ministers - nobody seems to care a great deal– despite the startling statistics and the simplicity of the solution. In his interview with AAH, Paul said: “In an ideal world, it would be compulsory to have one trained adult on every school bus with the driver. But that costs “œ˜iĂžoÂť So, what price do we place on our children’s well-being?

The Cover Story Making the cover this month is Ian Swainson, head chef at The Pass in Lower Beeding. The Michelin-star chef has been at the leading restaurant, within South Lodge Hotel, since April. He has created an intriguing menu, with several dishes demonstrating his love of art. We arrived at The Pass about an hour before other diners started turning up so that Toby could set up his equipment. So as not to intrude others as they enjoyed their night out, we set up a table out of sight in a

corner of the kitchen. It was here that the pictures seen in our Food & Drink article were taken. The photo of Ian was shot in the dining area, and once again features a chef pulling back a chair! It’s become something of a Toby Phillips trademark in recent years; previous covers of The Camellia and The Wisborough follow the same theme. Toby really seems to like chairs! Other potential covers include artist Benjamin Smith, Nina Fowkes of The Yoga Garden and John Davies.

John Davies at his Horsham home, with some of his paintings

MY STORY: 21

John Davies, Horsham

I

John tells of his experiences during the Second World War, from Tunisia to the Battle of Monte Cassino, and in later life how his Christmas paintings have helped raise money for local charities.

was born in Barry, Glamorgan in 1922. My father’s work was associated with the railways, but he died with illness when I was only 12. I had two younger brothers, Michael and Philip, who have pre-deceased me.

I attended The Royal Masonic School, an independent school for boys in Bushey, Hertfordshire. Schools were strict in those days, but I enjoyed my time there as I was reasonably bright and enjoyed sport.

After my father died, my mother took on a hotel called The Marcina in Worthing and I would stay there during the school holidays. I carried out various FWVKGU CPF O[ Ć‚TUV EJQKEG QH career was to go into the hotel business. My mother closed it

due to ill health and the site has long since been converted for apartments.

When I left school, I became a trainee at the Trocadero with the intention of eventually becoming a hotel manager. At the time, they called it ‘le premier restaurant du monde’ which was pushing their luck a little bit! As I had learnt French at school, which was spoken widely in the restaurant, I was making good progress. After two years of training, the war started and the bombs started falling on London, so the Trocadero was closed. I took a clerical job instead and studied to become a chartered secretary. I found that I enjoyed the work as it was a lot less

time-consuming than hotel work and gave me time to relax. I had taken an intermediate exam before joining the Army in 1942, when I was posted to the Derbyshire Yeomanry, a reconnaissance regiment. My knowledge of the French language from my hotel experience meant that I was useful as an interpreter as much as anything else.

We landed in North Africa in late 1942 and were involved in the battle of Tunis. We didn’t know quite what we were getting into really, as nobody seemed to be certain where the Germans were. They had formed a ring around the city of Tunis and it was some time before we advanced.

My squadron was reputedly the Ć‚TUV KPVQ 6WPKU 6JCV YCU VJG NCUV stand of the Germans in Africa and from there they capitulated.

We re-grouped in Algeria and crossed the Mediterranean Sea towards Italy. We landed at 0CRNGU KP + UCY O[ Ć‚TUV action of the war at the Battle of Monte Cassino, which was an important step towards the Allied forces breaking through to Rome. That was certainly the most dangerous part of my war as it involved a cavalry charge, in which we lost quite a lot of men. 9G YGTG NQECVGF QP VJG ĆƒCPM but needed to advance to try CPF FTCY Ć‚TG CYC[ HTQO VJG main attack at Cassino, where we were suffering heavy losses. At that point, we had to

pull out of the charge of course. They are terrible moments even to talk about now, because we were all friends. After we won the Battle of Monte Cassino, we advanced through Italy and by the following Christmas we were in Florence. The advancement stopped there, at least as far as tanks was concerned, so we were involved in infantry work in the hills around Castello during the winter with more

recreational time. The following spring, we moved from Pesaro as part of the push KPVQ #WUVTKC FWTKPI VJG Ć‚PCN stages of the war, and for a time I was involved in various patrols there. After the war, I decided not to pursue a career in the hotel industry. When I was working at the Trocadero, I would work from 10am - 10pm with two hours off in the afternoon. From there, I was appointed secretary of Babcock International, which was then called Babcock & Wilcox Ltd. The chairman of the company was John King, who cut his teeth with us before becoming chairman of British Airways. I particularly enjoyed my NCUV Ć‚XG [GCTU QH YQTM RTKQT VQ retirement, when I was working in Crawley. The job involved a fair amount of travelling overseas for contractual and board meetings.

I served with the Territorial Army until 1963 and had some good times. I was with the TA right through the Cold War so we are always training. 24: MY STORY

During the Suez Crisis of 1956, things looked bit dicey and I thought I might be called up for active service again. Thankfully, that died down. My penultimate camp with the Dragoons was in Northern Ireland. We took over the vehicles of the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment, a regiment of the British Army, and for a fortnight were based in Omagh, County Tyrone. The Territorial Army has a great social side and we would travel all over the country. At the same time, you are always preparing for the unexpected and there’s more chance of you being called up for commissioned service. I met my wife Pamela at a party in South Kensington. I think a HTKGPF QH OKPG JCF VTKGF VQ ƂZ me up with somebody else, but Pam and I met instead!

We were married in the October of Coronation year and recently celebrated our 63rd anniversary. We have two sons; Mark is a chartered surveyor and lives in Horsham, whilst Paul is a senior

partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers.

In 1998, I became chairman of Horsham District Arts Council, which ran three art exhibitions as well as events for young people. In 1995, this evolved into the Horsham Arts Fanfare, formed under the chairmanship of Sir Michael Checkland, formerly Director General of the BBC. We brought some fantastic acts to the town, including Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra. Now different people are trying to revive a local arts festival, which is good to see. I have always enjoyed painting, although since retirement I have had much more time for it. I joined Horsham Painting Group and the Association of Sussex Artists (ASA) of which I am now President. I’m still painting now, although everything takes a bit longer when you’re 94-years-old. I like to paint landscapes of my favourite places, including the hills of Corsica and Venice. I’m a big fan of John Piper’s artwork. He is an artist I have

or the past decade, Paul Vodden has campaigned tirelessly on the issue of bullying on dedicated school buses. In 2006, his son Ben committed suicide at the age of 11 after being bullied on the bus from his school in Horsham to his Southwater home. At the inquest into Ben’s death, harrowing details emerged concerning the actions of the bus driver, who was among those reported to have been bullying him.

Paul has commissioned two reports after extensively researching the wider issues behind Ben’s tragic death. The Vodden Report, published early in 2014, provided evidence of UKIPKƂECPV DWNN[KPI QP FGFKECVGF school buses. Then in September last year, an extended Vodden Report assessed the perspective of the drivers on school buses. Despite VJG UVCTVNKPI ƂPFKPIU QH VJG report, the family have not yet been able to bring about positive change to school transport legislation. In November, Paul announced details of a collaboration with York St John University, which will explore the effectiveness of CCTV on school buses as a tool to help combat bullying. Here, Paul - who now lives in Dorset with wife Caroline details his ongoing battle to put in place procedures that help protect both children and bus drivers.

‘There’s more legislation dealing with animals going to a slaughter house’

z The Vodden family lived in Southwater at the time of Ben’s tragic death at the age of 11

The study at York St John will focus on the effectiveness of CCTV on school buses. That will include looking at what kind of surveillance would work best and whether it is effective in providing data and preventing bullying.

Currently, it is up to individual bus companies to install CCTV cameras. There is no legislation requiring it and these studies will not change that. My hope is that we can take evidence from the study to the industry and say ‘if you want to manage bullying and behaviour on your buses, you need to do X, Y and Z.’

During our research for The Vodden Report, we spoke to DWU FTKXGTU YJQ FKFPoV ƂPF CCTV particularly helpful for various reasons. Some companies would have them turned off so they were just a dummy camera. Sometimes those who misbehave know where to stay out of the sight of the cameras. In some cases, the cameras were cheap models

and offered poor resolution.

The statistics revealed in The Vodden Report are clear. You could argue that neither survey is comprehensive but they are conclusive in that they highlight a problem and lift the corner of a dirty carpet. This issue has been passing under the radar but it’s very serious. Sadly, it’s an issue that we’re having FKHƂEWNV[ KP VT[KPI VQ TGUQNXG. I’m hoping that the study will EQPƂTO QT QVJGTYKUG VJG XCNWG of CCTV. It may transpire that the research says it is not adequate and we can then pursue other avenues, such as having a second adult on board school buses. Having another adult on-board is - in my opinion - by far the DGVVGT QRVKQP 6JG FKHƂEWNV[ here is that you then have to make sure that person is trained properly in how to deal with children, and how to handle bad behaviour. And that costs money.

Bullying is not the only concern. Earlier this year, a 13-year-old in Surrey suffered an epileptic seizure on a school bus. The driver was unable to treat the boy and he died. I have raised this point many times - where else other than school buses YQWNF [QW ƂPF EJKNFTGP unsupervised, except for a bus driver with no medical training?

Nobody wants to take responsibility for school bus journeys. I spoke to a director of a bus company and he explained that one of the troubles they have is that the transport is commissioned by either the local authority or the school, which in turn say ‘what happens on the coach is down to you and not us.’ The Children Act 2004 requires schools to

z Caroline and Paul Vodden have dedicated 10 years to seeking better protection for children

have a responsibility for the behaviour of their children outside of the school grounds. Yet there is a lack of knowledge among some schools. School transport really started in 1946, when children living in rural communities could not get to school, so the schools sent buses to pick them up. In all of the time since, very little has changed in regard to the legislation concerning the care of children on school buses. I think it’s true that there is more legislation dealing with animals going to a slaughterhouse than there is children going to and from school.

I’ve not received any meaningful political support. I spoke to a minister who didn’t

appear interested at all and seemed to be meeting me because my MP asked him too. Former Dorset MP Annette Brook was excellent and raised the issue in the House of Commons before she retired. Unfortunately our new Dorset MP isn’t so helpful.

One of the most common remarks I hear when talking to people about this issue, is that their own school bus journey was awful. That may have been many years ago. Why hasn’t anything been done? If this sVWF[ ƂPFU VJCV VJG introduction of CCTV on school buses does everything that we would like it to do, and as a result the government made CCTV compulsory on school

buses, then I would be inclined to say ‘job done.’ Or at least job partly done, in terms of something positive coming from what happened to Ben. Parents put their children on the school bus and never think it is a potential danger or hazard. If you have a child using the school bus, I urge you to speak to your children, just so you know what is going on. INTERVIEW: BEN MORRIS

It didn’t feel right practicing in the village hall, so in 2009 Nina established The Yoga Garden in her own back garden. “Autumn was coming and I thought it would be nice to set up a space outside around the pond and trees, where I feel a connection with nature,” said Nina. “I liked the idea of using a yurt which could also accommodate my massage therapies. Being at one with Nature

After three years at Sullington, Nina decided to look for a new home so that The Yoga Garden could offer retreats. Having been asked by many students and teachers if she could offer accommodation on site, providing a place to stay became a key focus for Nina. She found exactly what she was looking for in the heart of the re-wilding project on the Knepp estate in Dial Post. “Yoga is about forming a connection with nature and the environment. What is beautiful about Knepp is that the Burrell family, who own the estate, have spent the last 15 years healing the land and turning it back over to nature. “The people who step in to our

REALITY CHECK

Representational artist Benjamin Smith strives for perfection So, who’s this then? This is Benjamin Smith, a Horsham artist two years into a four-year course at London Atelier of Representational Art, commonly abbreviated to LARA.

I guess that’s weird art then… Not at all. No sharks in a cage or concepts of ‘unmade beds’ here. Representational art is the sadly side-lined skill of making paintings or drawings look as close to the real thing as possible.

What’s the ‘atelier’ bit all about? Don’t be frightened; it’s just a French word! It means a private UVWFKQ QH CP CTVKUV YQTMKPI KP ƂPG QT decorative art. So, this is basically the way people used to paint? Yes, nothing conceptual here. At LARA, students spend half the day drawing from sculptures and the other half drawing from a life model. Ben said: “We keep working on projects until they are essentially visually indistinguishable from the real thing, and then we move on to the next one. It can be very demanding; I’m there every day from 9am, sometimes until 8.30pm, which can be exhausting.” They use real life models? They do indeed. They are required to sit still for half a day, every day for about four weeks. But they are used to it as LARA uses professional life models.

They would have them in that there London! But even with professionals, there CTG CNYC[U UOCNN ƃWEVWCVKQPU YJKEJ Ben believes gives the art its character. “A Portrait drawn from life models or still life is a compilation of thousands of individual observations and the result can be so much more probing - in terms of the character – than you will get from a photograph. There are always

www.atomltd.co.uk Following a dip in July and August, mortgage approvals bounced back in September. According to the Bank of England's Money and Credit statistics, mortgage approvals totalled 118,470 in September with a value of ÂŁ19.1bn, compared to 113,524 and ÂŁ17.6bn in August.

movements and changes in portraiture and that is what gives the picture character and life. It is a three-way dialogue between the sitter, the artist and the XKGYGT CPF + ƂPF VJCV F[PCOKE fascinating.

And Ben draws sculptures too? Yes, particularly those depicting )TGGM QT 4QOCP Ć‚IWTGU including Greek poet Homer. “What captivated me was the texture of his beard,â€? said Ben. “Greek sculpture is highly ideologised as nobody’s beard looks like that. But it’s interesting to draw as you start seeing little shapes within it and you see stories happening within them.â€?

*G Ć‚PFU UVQTKGU KP VJG DGCTF! That’s my fault! When Ben made that quote, there was more context to it! Another of his pictures portrays Constanza Bonucelli, a married woman who Bernini fell in love with. Ben said: “It took the intervention of the Pope to resolve the quarrel between the sculptor Bernini and Constanza’s enraged husband! A lot of the work that resonates with me has an interesting story.â€?

But does anyone buy pictures like this anymore? Art is a weird and wacky world, as anyone who watched the BBC documentary on Christie’s auction house can testify. Yves Klein’s Untitled Blue Monochrome sold for $3.3m, leaving us to ponder how much the colour swatches at Homebase might be worth if only somebody would appreciate the ‘visceral energy’ they possess. But that shows it is abstract art that people want‌ Representational art may not command huge hammer prices, but Ben feels perceptions are changing. “I liken the situation to that of music. It would have been an incredible shame if - around about the birth of rock ‘n’ roll the world decided that works by Mozart and people who wanted to compose in that way, were forgotten and classical music was consigned to the dustbin. That would be an absolute tragedy. But in a sense, that’s exactly what has happened to art since the beginning of the 20th century. You can attend a music college

The number of approvals for house purchase reached 62,932 with the value at ÂŁ11.1bn, up from August, but still lower than the six month average of 64,481. Remortgage approvals totalled 42,440, also down on the six month average of 41,882 but also higher than August. The average mortgage interest rate was 2.74% and, according to The Council of Mortgage Lenders, the average for new loans was 2.27%. They also suggested that the average First Time Buyer deposit was 15% (ÂŁ28k in July) and the average house price amounted to ÂŁ184k (August) for first timers. Yet First Time Buyers borrowed on average just 3.45 times their income!

‘The average interest rate on credit card lending in September was 18.49%, which is 18.24% above the Base Rate!’

This is interesting as a report from The Money Charity also adds that inclusive of all benefits, private renters spent an average of 43% of their income on rental payments. In comparison, owner occupiers spent on average 19% of income. And as we enter the run up to Christmas, it's useful to note that the average interest rate on credit card lending in September was 18.49%, which is 18.24% above the Bank of England Base Rate of 0.25%! Remember, it doesn't matter which type of credit you use to fund seasonal spends, at some point they all need to be repaid! I appreciate you taking the time to read my columns this year, it's been an interesting twelve months. Bring on 2017! Wishing you and your families a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Peaceful New Year!

in any city in the world and learned the violin, much like you can learn the electric guitar. But for the most part, representational work was lost to the art world. Now, I think the world is coming back round to it.” How did Ben come round to it in VJG ƂTUV RNCEG! He studied art at A-level whilst living in Birmingham but didn’t pursue it at university as “the tradition from painting from life had more or less died out.” He added: “It was actually frowned upon, almost like it was inferior to abstract or conceptual installation art.” Subsequently, Ben lost heart in the idea of art college and became a lawyer instead.

I was starting to like him! Ben spend 10 years in Birmingham working on local authority contracts, but the sudden death of his father prompted Ben to review his life. He said: “My father was still working up to the day he died from C RWNOQPCT[ GODQNKUO CDQWV ƂXG years ago. He wasn’t feeling well so he drove himself to the doctors and died near the entrance to the surgery. It made me think about my life, and how you can’t just assume that you’re going to get up every day and carry on. His grandfather? Robert Ball, who studied at the Royal College of Art and later became principal of Stroud Art College. Examples of his etchings and paintings can be seen in The Victoria & Albert Museum.

Ben said: “My grandfather was something of a child prodigy, so he started at art school when he was nine or 10. At the Royal College of Art he won every scholarship going, so he was quite an inspirational character.”

He would have been delighted that Ben was following in his footsteps? Actually, he discouraged his family from pursuing a career in art. Ben recalls: “My grandfather was out of step in that he was always interested KP ƂIWTCVKXG TGRTGUGPVCVKQPCN YQTM at a time when it was at its least popular. It’s really only in the last 20 years that there’s been a revival of interest in representational studying, which was preserved by quite a small group of individuals at a handful of European academies in the 20th century but in the main was almost wilfully forgotten.” Not by everyone though? Indeed, but academies are still few and far between. LARA was established in 2008 and has already produced acclaimed artists including Luca Indraccolo, Helen Masacz and Lewis Hazelwood-Horner. Why bother though; surely art is all about talent? Ben says: “Natural ability can only get you so far and I feel that talent is a bit of a myth. People assume that artists are born fully formed and producing masterpieces, but that is not true. Occasionally, you might have a Leonardo or a Michelangelo, but virtually every other artist has to train very hard for many years. How Horsham’s Bandstand Became a Focus for Celebrations

T

his month we look at an iconic Horsham landmark that for over 100 years has been central to many of Horsham’s civic activities. Horsham didn’t have a proper bandstand until 1892, but did have some temporary wooden structures. Henry Burstow - a renowned Ć‚IWTG KP *QTUJCOoU JKUVQT[ - wrote about how the town celebrated the coronation of Queen Victoria on 28 June 1838. ‘Early in the morning, the Church bells began to peal. All shops were closed by 11.30am, when the children – about 800 including myself - assembled in the Causeway. Each child was provided with a knife, fork, mug and a ticket on which was printed ‘Victoria,

Crowned 28th June 1838. Headed by the band, the procession marched around the town, then to Swan Field, so called from its connection with the Swan Inn, West Street. ‘There was a temporary wooden bandstand erected, upon which the old Town Band played and drank, and drank and played again.’

ou can make a case for cooking - even in its simplest form - being an artistic process. For instance, is there an art to boiling the perfect egg? However, the new head chef at The Pass at South Lodge Hotel is taking this a step further with dishes directly inspired by his favourite artists. Ian Swainson cites surrealist Joan MirĂł as an inspiration and VJKU KPĆƒWGPEG KU GXKFGPV KP JKU exciting, occasionally daring menu. Several dishes are presented almost as if they are small works of art, ready to be discussed and debated by diners, who have the added bonus of eating them. Like a trip to a modern art gallery, The Pass menu is full of talking points. It’s unusual and divisive. At times, it may leave you pining for something more traditional. But still, you can’t deny it’s fun!

Finding Balance in the South

Ian has stepped into the sizeable boots of former head chef Matt Gillan, who led The Pass to new heights during his time in Lower Beeding. With Matt preparing for a new business venture, the timing was fortunate for Ian, also a Michelin-star chef. “I had been working at The Samling at Windermere, where I earned one star for three consecutive Michelin guides. “It was a good job for me, but I wasn’t particularly happy living in the Lake District and wanted to move somewhere close to Brighton. “I was looking for a good work/ life balance and felt that to do that I needed to come down south, closer to where I grew

up. I believe that in order to be as inspired and creative as you can be, you need to be happy in every aspect of life. “I moved down to Brighton without a plan, but found it TGCNN[ FKHĆ‚EWNV VQ Ć‚PF C LQD When you have a Michelin star on your CV, there are only certain jobs available to you. “After some time, I stumbled upon The Pass. It also creates an inspiring working environment for the next generation of promising chefs at South Lodge. Ian said: “As a young chef, I worked at several restaurants where - if you asked why something was done the answer was ‘because I said so!’ “We don’t want to be like that. I want my team to understand every single ingredient on the plate. That helps them to better portray ideas to the customer. “There is a very good atmosphere amongst the team here. There’s usually a bit of a divide between the front of house team and the kitchen, but I set my stall out on day one that we are part of the same team. “Because of the layout of the restaurant, there is a mutual respect.

The Volunteers behind the rich history at Horsham Museum

H

Being a council-run museum, there is simply not the manpower to endlessly sieve through everything that comes in. So, the museum relies on a small, devoted team of volunteers to sort through and catalogue each item. The Slide Specialists

ave you ever moved into a new house and found a box of old documents and diaries in the attic and had a feeling that it was too important to lob in the bin? Or inherited a suitcase full of old photographs and slides from a relative and thought ‘surely these have some importance?’ I haven’t either‌ But clearly a lot of people have, and many of these boxes, bags and bin liners of long-forgotten photos, diaries, documents, slides, postcards, newspapers, artefacts, videos and paraphernalia end up at Horsham Museum.

Margaret Matthews & Julie Mitchell

Julie: Photographic slides are our prime HQEWU 9G JCXG VJQWUCPFU VQ IGV VJTQWIJ and currently we’re working on part of the Cramp collection. Margaret: Fortunately, Julie has lived in Horsham all her life, so her knowledge is useful when it comes to identifying locations in pictures. The volunteers have a lot of fun discussing photos and working out what or where they relate too.

Julie: 9G ECP QHVGP FCVG RKEVWTGU D[ people’s fashion or by the cars. If there’s an Austin 7 there, then you can take an educated guess, but many photographs we receive have no date or caption. Quite often they are items found in the attic and people don’t want to throw it out in case there is something important. Everything we keep goes into the temperature controlled archive room.

Margaret: Jeremy has pointed out that we need to be collecting items from the current day, especially from events like the local campaigns on the EU Referendum because it’s all tomorrow’s history.

Julie: I don’t think the council realises what they have in Jeremy. He does so much over and above his role as he has a genuine passion for local history. Margaret: He has an encyclopaedic knowledge of Horsham!

Caring for Costumes 'FYKPC 9KNNUJGT I look after the costume collection at the museum and - along with my friend Barbara - have catalogued every item. 9GoXG OCFG UWTG VJCV GXGT[VJKPI – even belts and gloves - has a UGRCTCVG KFGPVKƂECVKQP PWODGT so that when the curator comes to put on an exhibition, for example of 1960s clothing, they know exactly where to look. A Lad of Letters Hugh Clark

My favourite thing is reading QVJGT RGQRNGoU NGVVGTU 9G JCF a bag delivered anonymously which was full of them. It was found in the roof of a house in Bedford Road. Over the course of two and a half years, I read them all and catalogued each one, learning quite a lot about Horsham families.

The letters were all saved by a girl called Florence Frost, QT (NQTK 9G UJCTG C DKTVJFC[ so I felt a connection to her, although Flori was born in 1870. She saved letters from the age of 12 until her early 20s, when she married John Stevens who ran the ironmongery where 9KNMQ KU VQFC[ The letters reveal much about 8KEVQTKCP NKHG 5JG YQWNF VTCXGN all over the country by railroad to see friends and relatives. I’m currently cataloguing over 1,000 documents all relating to transactions in Horsham over the last 400 years. I use Google constantly to look things up, as the letters and documents are referencing things that I’ve never even heard of!

I was initially a member of a local history group which evolved into The Museum Society. A few of us in the Society wanted to be more involved in local research, so started cataloguing items for the Museum. Over time, the Society became The Friends of Horsham Museum, which is a charity that supports the museum by raising funds. 4KEJCTF &CXKGU I’ve been volunteering at the museum since 2009. I was volunteering for the Citizen’s Advice Bureau and wanted a change. I am interested in history and genealogy, so when I saw this role whilst at *QTUJCO 8QNWPVGGT Centre, I thought I would give it a go. I didn’t adopt a specialist area, but one has been adopted for me! Along with a colleague, I look at new photographs that come in to the museum. The database of images is getting bigger all the time. You never quite know what’s going to EQOG KP CPF YG CNN GPLQ[ coming here because the work is interesting. I also like the social side, as we all have a good chat during the tea-break.

Somebody here is always working on something that is unusual, surprising or of general interest. People are constantly surprised by how big the museum is; it’s something of a Tardis. Jeremy likes the museum to look fresh, so he is always buying new and interesting artefacts and selling old items to raise funds.

I’ve been helping out for a little over 10 years, having spent 30 years in the police force and a further 12 years at Sun Alliance.
