Don’t go anywhere, we’ve got Rowing!
INTRODUCTION: 5
Inspired by the Story of Jesse Owens
N
ow it’s September, hopefully people will be inspired to get back to work, having spent the last month being inspired by the Olympics. That was the big buzz word of the month, wasn’t it; Inspired.
As a casual consumer of sport through TV, I was constantly being reminded by BBC presenters how our superb, medal-winning athletes should inspire me to do exactly the same as them, but far less competently. Yet, at the same time, I was also being told “not to go anywhere as “Team GB is going for Gold in the rowing.
Having seen the brilliance of our E[ENKUVU + YCU DTKGĆƒ[ nKPURKTGFo to pick up my bike with the intention of going out for a ride. But it has a slow puncture, which means you have to take the pump out with you and stop every mile and, well, it’s not worth the bother. Then having seen the brilliance QH /Q (CTCJ + YCU DTKGĆƒ[ nKPURKTGFo VQ IQ TWPPKPI $WV + don’t really have running trainers, just a pair of Sketchers that don’t have much cushioning making jogging quite hard going and, well, it’s not worth the bother. In terms of inspirational Olympic moments, the one that sticks in my mind is a three-minute documentary about Jesse Owens, narrated beautifully (as ever) by Michael Johnson. 9JCV + HQWPF TGHTGUJKPI YCU VJCV the documentary didn’t conform

In contrast, when Owens returned to America, as a black man he was not allowed to enter through the front lobby of the 9CNFQTH #UVQTKC 0GY ;QTM GXGP though a reception was being held there in his honour. I later found the clip and watched it again with my youngest son and afterwards we researched on the Internet,

That, to me, is how we can all be inspired by the Olympic Games. It is a message we would do well to remember today, at a time of growing divide. This month, we feature the UVQT[ QH #FCO .GU\E\CT YJQ as a young man found himself in Horsham after a turbulent

Even now - seven years after the Federation of Poles reported The Daily Mail to the Press Complaints Commission for its negative portrayal of its people (to be fair, it has been a few months since I last had a dig at The DM!) - there is still a great deal of vitriol aimed at Eastern Europeans. This appeared to peak during the EU Referendum, when a dim-witted few amongst the narrow majority demanded that “Polish vermin leave the country. Yeah, and take your work ethic and competitive labour rates with you! 5CF KUPoV KV! 9G JCXG UQ OCP[ inspirational stories from history to learn from; yet so many of us have yet to realise how things can be between men on this Earth...

‘I was left in a room with some peanuts, having been given the last rites’

was born in Poland in 1935. My father served in the Polish Army in World War One. For his bravery, he was given a grant by the government in the form of a farm near to a forest.
He eventually built a house on the farm and raised a family of seven children. He was very strict with us. Mother was softer. She never scolded us, just told a quotation or two. She taught us to sing, dance and read poems, although never in my father’s presence. He thought we could do without it. My father would cure meat,
pickle cabbage, and grew tobacco to sell in the summer. Mother would sit out the front of the house and spend ages making butter in a barrel. Family life was good. I still remember so much from that time. My childhood village would now be part of Ukraine, near Kiev, but I UYGCT + EQWNF ƂPF O[ QNF JQOG KH I was ever to return. Everything was going well until September 1939.
I am not sure of my mother’s background, but she looked Italian to me. She spoke German though and would teach friends
and neighbours the language. One day, after teaching, she stopped downtown to buy fabric to make winter clothes for us children. She came back with bullet wounds. I would have been four years old. I have since been told that she could be outspoken and was warning people about German propaganda. I believe she was shot by the Russians. On February 11 1940, two Russian soldiers came to the farm at 5am with orders to ‘get ready’. Two sleds were there to take us to our school and from there we were taken to the railway station. We were packed into wagons usually used for transporting animals. My family were on the top deck as we travelled from Kiev to Moscow.
When we arrived in Moscow, they could not feed us, so we were turned away. For about two and a half weeks, stopping once a day if we were lucky to eat inedible soup, we travelled by train to Siberia. I remember it

We walked day and night, staying in barns or empty houses and obviously we had very little food. Sadly, two of my siblings, a brother and a sister, had died aged 10 and four, plagued with illness and starvation before we reached Siberia.
Somehow, we became separated from our father but were
reacquainted in Turkistan. To this day, I cannot fathom how this happened. He was taken ill and died on March 1 1942. I vividly remember being in an old shack with no lights, and my eldest brother saying, “I’ve done it. He added: “an old boy helped me. He had buried our father.

I spent almost six years in Valivade in India, which turned out to be the best years of my childhood. I spent my time eating sugarcane, had monkeys and squirrels for pets and my only toy was a catapult. We were fed and watered daily; what more could I ask for? The orphanage was run by teachers and nuns, meaning there were certain rules and regulations. I didn’t always conform, but I still make a bed with faultless precision.

22: MY STORY
‘When we were suddenly told we were moving to England from India, I felt depressed.’
‘too much is worse than not enough’, I know because I have had both. This saying rings true when I think about my time in India with very little to my name. I would not swap my childhood in India with anyone in the world.
When we were suddenly told we were moving to England, I felt depressed. I was even more depressed when I had to sit on a boat for two weeks. I still cannot understand the novelty of a cruise! At Gibraltar, I left the sun behind and was faced with black sky as I arrived in England in February 1948. I was dressed in tropical clothing! We stopped in Liverpool, then travelled to an army camp in Gloucestershire. We were all given more suitable attire, and after a rest I was moved on to Pulborough. I lived with my sister in an army barracks with
no issues except gangrene which kept me in hospital for two months. Thankfully, my leg survived.
Five Oaks camp near Billingshurst was my next stop, where I stayed there for about a year. I became very good at making bicycles from old parts. I would cycle all day long and must’ve learned every road in Sussex! My sister went to work from 7am to 7pm and I’d cook dinner. When food was short, I’d take rabbits off the gamekeeper’s snares at 4am, out of sight. To earn a crust, I rode to West Sussex Golf %QWTUG VQ ECFF[ 3WKVG QHVGP I would wait half a day just for one job!

During the summer holidays, the camp emptied, taking everyone away in different directions. I had nowhere to go as my sister had married and had her own life. So I spent two weeks in Newarkon-Trent, staying with a lady at her council house. She made me breakfast and looked after me like a mother. I can only describe it as being dropped in heaven and I will be eternally grateful to her. I visited her once some years later, at an unhappy time in my life.
One of my regrets is that I never truly thanked her for what she did for me. Truly, if I had a million pounds now, I would give it to her and it would still not be enough to demonstrate how much I valued the experience. /[ ƂTUV RTQRGT LQD YCU CU CP electrician’s apprentice. I worked solidly, teaching myself by reading books at night and by diligently watching others. Before long, my boss trusted me with the trickiest of jobs. I became a selfemployed sub-contractor after just two years.
I met a garage owner in Pound Hill and we were discussing our hopes and dreams and he said ‘I know what would make money; a golf driving range.’ My response was ‘What is that?’ He said, ‘I don’t know, but my dad goes to one’. I have never played a game of golf myself, as I’ve never had the time. Yet thanks to my time caddying, I had experience of how a golf course should look and this became my next goal. I acquired 11 acres of land from The Ministry of Defence and in a couple of months, with the help of a tree surgeon friend, I constructed a nine-hole golf course. A golf course is usually built on 50-100 acres of land, so I was delighted when a professional classed it as a ‘miracle’.
I worked from 4am to 11pm, picking up golf balls to clearing up glasses, and acquired many young and willing workers along the way. I still keep in touch with them and to this day they say that the range was the best days of their lives. I went on to build another small golf course in Burstow some years later. Work can offer so much. Unfortunately, society has changed and personally I do not think it is for the best. Work and the people I have met whilst striving to achieve saved me

Hear Better. Enjoy More gradually and the signs are subtle. Our ability to adapt to those small changes makes it difficult to accurately self-diagnose and so other people may notice it first. How new hearing technology is helping to improve lives...
C
urrently one in six people in the UK – an estimated 10 million people – have some form of hearing loss. Local Specialists, the Horsham Hearing Centre have been raising awareness and helping local people in Horsham to hear better for 21 years this year. Husband and Wife team, Jonathan and Julie Ormerod, started their local practice in 1995. Since then they have helped several thousand Horsham residents and continue to offer state-of-the-art hearing technology, coupled with unrivalled service and aftercare. Jonathan Ormerod, Hearing Aid Audiologist, and his team at the Centre are proud to be promoting this important healthcare issue. ‘Most people will regularly go and see a dentist or an optician, but don’t think about their hearing in the same way. We are encouraging people to come in and have a free hearing test and consultation.’ He continues, ‘Often people think if they had a hearing impairment they would know. However, hearing loss happens
According to Jonathan, ‘One of the most satisfying aspects of helping people to hear better is seeing how there is a clear link between hearing better and feeling better. Giving someone the confidence to communicate and deal with social situations again makes a real difference to their overall wellbeing.’ Over the past 20 years, there have been huge advances in hearing aid technology. ‘Hearing aids are now tiny computers fitted either over or inside your ears. The latest models wirelessly link together between the ears and with other devices such as televisions or telephones. There are now instruments which are designed to work specifically with iPhones and they can be discreetly controlled by your phone!’ Being part of the Hearcentres group of Independent Hearing Centres, the Horsham Hearing Centre offers a unique “Better Hearing Guarantee.” This gives you peace of mind and guarantees that your hearing will be improved. The company will work with you over an initial 60-day evaluation period to achieve the optimum results for you. Beyond that, all
patients receive regular six month follow-up appointments to ensure that they are getting the best from their hearing aids. If you think your hearing is not what it once was or you know someone who does not hear so well, the Horsham Hearing Centre are offering free initial consultations including a hearing test and the chance to try the very latest hearing aid technology without any obligation. Call the Practice Managers, Karen or Sandra on 01403 218700 to book a priority appointment with either Jonathan or Julie Ormerod.

AToM celebrates 25 Years in the Mortgage Industry
“
It’s so frustrating. People will spend all day shopping around to save £20 on a new fridge, then tell everyone about the great deal they found. Yet they won’t put aside a couple of hours to save £4,000 a year on their mortgage. It’s crazy!’
Those are the thoughts of Dale Jannels, director at AToM (All Types of Mortgages) in Horsham, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. It’s been a rollercoaster ride, with huge growth in the 1990’s followed by the troubles of the Óään w > V > VÀ>Ã ° - i Ì }Ã though, haven’t changed. The business was founded by Victor Jannels, and now sons Dale and Neal are directors in a business that has enjoyed remarkable success in a challenging industry. We discussed the ups and downs of business with Vic and Dale. Whilst that may not sound as
enticing as some of our features, it might well be the only one that saves you money!
How did AToM come about? Vic: I worked in banking until 1986 before launching a w > V > ÃiÀÛ Vià V «> Þ Horsham. At the beginning of the 1990’s, I could see that a new breed of mortgage company was gaining a foothold in the industry, so I sold my interest in that business. In 1991, I moved my children out of the playroom at home and AToM was born.
Dale: I joined in 1999 after working at Legal & General for wÛi Þi>Àð Ü>à ÌÀ> } Ì Li > accountant but having had mortgages thrown at me from every angle since I was young, I joined the family business. Vic: Initially, I ran AToM alone but couldn’t have done so without Þ Ü vi] - i >] Ü Ã ÃÌ

It was a wonderful time; the whole market was booming. That changed with the crash of 2008 though? Vic: It did, but fortunately we were prepared for it. At that time, we were also shareholders in a very good mortgage lender called Unity Homeloans, funded by Investec. The chief economist at Investec predicted a market crash and made the bold move to stop lending. Dale: We took some grief about that at the time, because the market was still in an upward spiral and some felt we’d made the wrong call. A few months

later, Northern Rock hit the wall and the market disintegrated. Vic: We did well, as we honoured every mortgage offer that had been made. That wasn’t true of a lot of lenders who fell by the wayside. It was a tough time for us though, as we had to reduce staff. We went into what we all thought would be a two year recession. It turned out to be eight years. We moved to our current base in the Carfax in 2009. So what does AToM do? Dale: We have two main arms to Ì i LÕà iÃð / i wÀÃÌ Ã Ì >Ì Üi offer mortgages to individuals who walk through the front door. That may be anyone from an 18-year-old wÀÃÌ Ì i LÕÞiÀ Ü Ì > `i« Ã Ì vÀ the bank of mum and dad, to a 94-year-old.
And the second arm? Dale: The second arm is broker based work. What that means is that lenders come up with a range of mortgage products and they distribute them through us. They do that because, as brokers, we do all of the work for them. We advertise the lender’s products, handle the applications, go through pay slips, bank statements and credit reports, and underwrite the mortgage. It saves a lot of work for the lender. Vic: Most lenders don’t want a high street presence. There are bills and ÃÌ>vw } V ÃÌÃ] > ` i `iÀÃ >Ûi to go through all of the regulatory requirements. It’s incredibly expensive, so it’s better to choose half a dozen brokers as a partner, and let them do the preparation work. Why choose AToM as one of those partners? Why would people go to AToM rather than the high street banks? Dale: The main reasons are that we can be faster and will «À L>L Þ w ` > LiÌÌiÀ `i> ° 7 i Þ Õ Û Ã Ì > } -ÌÀiiÌ bank or building society, you normally have to wait a couple of weeks for an appointment with a mortgage advisor, as they tend to cover several different branches. Then you have to sit through a two-hour interview. If you want to shop around for a good deal, you might go through that same interview at several different places. Of course, most banks and building societies have pretty standard mortgage products too. If you come to AToM, there’s just one interview and we have access to 11,000 mortgages from across the entire market place, so we will source the best deals v À Þ Õ° iV>ÕÃi Üi `i> Ü Ì everyone, our customers can Ãii «Ì Ã vÀ -> Ì> `iÀ] Halifax, Nationwide, The Derbyshire, The Dudley or even Ì i -Ì>vv À` ,> Ü>Þ Õ ` } - V iÌÞt People can also go through their estate agent? Leading mortgage lenders are placing experienced «i « i ÕÀ ÀÃ > vwVi] so if a customer comes in needing something out of the ordinary, we can go to the lenders and say ‘Can we do this deal?’ Also, having on-site underwriters gives us the competitive advantage.
With 11,000 mortgage products, how do you keep so many lenders happy? Dale: We don’t work with all of the lenders that approach us. Lenders have to come to us with something that’s a little bit different. We don’t want lenders to come in with a deal that is just going to take away business from other lenders we have a good relationship with.
Vic: - iÌ iÃ] i `iÀÃ Ü >Ã us what the market needs, as we can identify gaps in the market. We’ve seen a huge range of buy-to-let and multioccupancy mortgages become available in recent years.

What sort of deals are available at the moment? Vic: At the moment, we’re seeing rates lower than I’ve seen in my entire mortgage career, especially since the base rate fell to .25%. One lender recently Â?>Ă•Â˜VÂ…i` > £ä‡Þi>Ă€ wĂ?i` Ă€>ĂŒi >ĂŒ Ă“°Ă“¯° -Âœ ˆv ĂžÂœĂ• ÂŽÂ˜ÂœĂœ ĂœÂ…>ĂŒ ĂžÂœĂ•½Ă€i going to do for the next decade, snap it up! Dale: There are a lot of Tracker Rates available at the moment and lenders are probably losing
money on those in the short term, in the hope they can get market share! We are also seeing plenty of new lenders launching products and deals, as well as old lenders coming to the market again, because there is money in this world again. There’s more optimism.
How is the market here in the Horsham District? Dale: House prices are of course high in Horsham and they’ll continue to rise as there’s not enough supply to meet demand. That is actually starting to cause problems with mortgage deals. If you’ve got three or four people going for the same property, it will inevitably sell above market value. If it’s priced at ÂŁ300,000, it’ll probably sell for ÂŁ320,000 - ÂŁ330,000 because people are played off against each other by estate agents. However, the mortgage lender will only cover for what the property is valued >ĂŒ° -Âœ° ˆ˜ some instances, we’re seeing ÂŤiÂœÂŤÂ?i Â…>Ă›ÂˆÂ˜} ĂŒÂœ w˜` Ă‹Ă“ä‡ ÂŁ30,000 to plug the gap as the lenders valuer has down-valued the property and the lender will œ˜Â?Ăž Â?i˜` œ˜ ĂŒÂ…iÂˆĂ€ Vœ˜wÀ“i` value.

www.atomltd.co.uk There appears to be a large misconception across the general public that mortgages are limited for those who are Self Employed. This is completely incorrect. Yes, a number of lenders struggle to cope with the way the Self Employed are remunerated, compared to the Employed. But actually lenders offer a number of products to those who are Self Employed and their chances of being able to borrow are just as good as anyone else's.

Each lender will have their own criteria requirements when it comes to using income and, in the main, the lenders will use salary and dividends paid. This can also include drawings. Some lenders will use Retained Profit figures and others will use a combination. Most would like figures provided by a qualified accountant, but more recently lenders are allowing HMRC Tax Calculations and Tax Overviews as proof of income. Most lenders on the high street will require at least two years accounts and probably average over that period. As I've mentioned before, there are many more lenders than you see on the high street! These lenders will also look at those who have only been Self Employed for one year and only have one set of accounts/figures. Others will look at those who have been Self Employed for a number of years and only use last years accounting figures. Lenders will look at your bank statements as part of the application process. They will want to see a regular income being deposited. Remember, mortgages are calculated on affordability and the lender will want to make sure you can afford your mortgage today, as well stress testing for future rate rises. In the main, most lenders will look at multiples of 4 to 5 times income subject to terms and conditions. They will also take in to account monthly expenditure on any debts and general living costs. Most will also want a healthy deposit in order to offer the more competitive rates. Finally, with so many options and so many different lenders available, seek impartial and expert advice. Although Self Employed is not complex, the mortgage market can be!

ART: 43
Why Botanical Art is Worth the Effort for Leigh Ann Gale
n the days before photography, botanical artists were in great demand. Sir Joseph Banks of Kew Gardens was among the wealthy enthusiasts who would send artists to every corner of the globe on plant collecting expeditions. On Charles Darwin’s suggestion, Marianne North travelled extensively to paint and document plants in New Zealand, Australia, South America and Africa towards the end of the 19th century. You may have seen her work at Kew Gardens, in what is thought to be the only permanent solo exhibition by a female artist in the country.
Yet even now, in this Internet age when the word ‘rhododendron’ brings up over eight million links on Google, there remains great worldwide interest in botanical art. Leigh Ann Gale, one of the country’s leading botanic artists, is based in Horsham. Before heading off to Australia, where one of her paintings was being shown in an exhibition at Sydney Botanical Gardens, Leigh Ann explained that little has changed in the world of botanic art, and relying on photos alone is still not enough!

‘Photos are Flat’
“If I was to base my work on photos alone, it would be frowned upon,â€? said Leigh Ann. “Botanical illustration is all to do with the accuracy of portraying the clinical specimen. You do everything you can to make the picture as realistic as possible. p;QW UJQY FGCF ĆƒQYGTU VJG different shading of the leaves, you can lift up the bulb and paint the seeds and pods of the plant. “With a photograph, you only have C ĆƒCV KOCIG “With painting botanically, I often advise people to try and make friends with the specimen. You have to look at the back of petals and
the underside of leaves to fully understand the plant, which you can’t do from a photograph. “It was once referred to as the ‘marriage of art and science’ and it is still important for scholars and botanists. You only have to visit Kew Gardens to see that.
The Resurgence
Photography, however, did have an impact on the popularity of botanical art and only in recent decades has the art form made a resurgence. Much of this is down to the work of Shirley Sherwood, who was awarded an OBE for services to botanical art and has a gallery at Kew Gardens
named after her. Another key contributor is Anne-Marie Evans, a former tutor of Leigh Ann’s and the ƂTUV RGTUQP KP VJG 7- VQ GUVCDNKUJ C EGTVKƂECVGF EQWTUG in botanical illustration.
Leigh Ann said: “I did have Shirley Sherwood’s book on botanical art, but it wasn’t until I moved to Horsham that I really caught the bug.

FOR THE GLOVE OF THE GAME
One to Watch: Brighton & Hove Albion ‘Keeper Emily Orman So, who’s this then? This is Emily Orman, a 13-yearold Millais pupil who is proving to be a useful footballer.
She looks tall for 13‌ That’s probably what makes her very useful between the sticks. Emily is currently playing in goal for Brighton and Hove Albion Women’s Football Club at Under 14 level, and has also been selected for the England Under 15 Women’s squad.
Must be a handy ‘keeper then? Emily is known to be an intimidating and fearless goalkeeper, although perhaps her main strength is that she’s very loud! She said: “When I Ć‚TUV LQKPGF $TKIJVQP + YCU C DKV shy. Because there are tactics involved, I didn’t want to shout something to my defenders that might go against the advice of the coaches! Now I know how the team play, I can be more vocal. Being a good shot stopper is important, but you have to be able to command the players as well, and I’m told that I understand the game well.â€?
Where did Emily discover her talent? It all started at Heron Way Primary School in Horsham. Emily liked playing football with the boys during play time, so UJG LQKPGF VJG UEJQQN VGCO VJGP the Heron Way team in the Horsham Mini Minor League. She recalls: “I was the only girl in VJG VGCO YJKEJ YCU Ć‚PG CPF + think the only position available was in goal! I sometimes played on pitch, but I felt comfortable in goal. I was vocal from the start and would boss all the boys around.â€? Did Heron Way conquer the Mini Minor League? Far from it! The team found good results hard to come by, although team spirit never wavered. Emily said: “We
weren’t the best side, but that helped me because I was always busy in matches. I would often pick up match awards because I prevented the score from being even worse! Even though we weren’t very good, we all tried our hardest and the boys treated me like any other player. They were my best mates and without them, I wouldn’t have wanted to go further in the game.
at Heron Way, but top clubs like to have several players for every position. “It’s very fair at Brighton, because the coaches give all of us match time, says Emily. Games are split into three 25-minute sections, and often a different goalkeeper is used in all three, with Emily being one of them, as the focus is on development rather than winning matches.
Must be hard to attract the top scouts when you’re bottom of the league‌ +P ;GCT 'OKN[ LQKPGF Horsham Sparrows Girls, which has produced some very good players down the years. Things progressed further when she was selected for the Sussex development team. Her all-round game improved, as she was occasionally picked as an QWVĆ‚GNF RNC[GT VQQ When did Brighton come knocking? From the Sussex development team, Emily went along for trials with Brighton and Hove Albion, CPF YCU KPXKVGF VQ LQKP VJG academy. She’s now in her third season at the club. “I’ve been signed this season based on my performances last year, so I haven’t had to go through the trials this time. The trails are tough, as Brighton are very selective as they have a good team.â€?
They’re not in the Premier league though, are they? It’s a different set up. Brighton girls’ teams across different age groups have been placed in Tier 1, the top tier of the newlycreated Regional Talent Clubs. They play the likes of Arsenal, Leicester City, Southampton, Liverpool, Manchester United and Blackburn Rovers. And Emily’s the regular ‘keeper? She’s one of several. Emily may have been the only goalkeeper
Yeah, right! It’s true. In fact, there isn’t actually a league table. Emily said: “Every game is used as a training match, and the coaches want to see us demonstrate the skills we’ve learned during the week. It’s nice to win, but the focus is on development. I play at Under 14’s for Brighton, and at Under 16’s they do have a league. But even then, the coaches are not too worried about results.
‘Women players still have to work as they are not professional, so they play for the love of the game.’
Is it a big commitment? Emily has football training for two hours on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings, with matches on 5CVWTFC[ 6JCV OCMGU KV FKHĆ‚EWNV to squeeze in home work, let alone other extra-curricular activities.
So what was Emily’s best performance to date? That came against one of the boys’ teams. She said “When we play boys, they are often a year younger, as they are physically stronger. I remember one game against the boys where I really felt I played well, making a lot of saves. That boosted my EQPĆ‚FGPEG CU + HGNV NKMG + YCU doing it for the girls!â€? It’s not quite like boys football though, is it? Maybe not yet, but top clubs are making a big commitment to improve the standard of women’s football. Emily said: “There are elements that need

improving in the women’s game, but certainly at Brighton they are treating us equally. They provide us with kits and good changing facilities, and the same level of coaching. Do Brighton have a senior women’s team? They do, and Emily has watched them play at the Amex Stadium, where 3,000 spectators turned up. But there’s a long way to go until the women’s game has equal status to the men’s. “The women players still have to work as they are not professional, so they play for the love of it, says Emily. “Hopefully that will change as more people watch women’s matches. It’ll take a while, but clubs like Brighton are making good progress. Shame we didn’t have women’s football in Rio... There was, although Team GB didn’t take part. Emily thinks
that’s a shame. “It might have helped women’s football if Team GB had played well. Our rugby and hockey teams did so well, which might encourage more young girls to get involved in team sports that are traditionally for boys.
Will we see women players on £100,000 a week deals? As a Brighton player, she can’t play for a local team like Heron Way or Sparrows anymore, although she can still play for Millais. She has occasionally helped out at Brighton and Hove Albion in the Community training sessions locally too.
And now England U-15’s? Emily has yet to play for England, but has been selected in the squad and attended FA training camps. “I never thought I would reach that level, said Emily. “Just to be selected to play for Brighton was great. What’s that then? Set 4 Success is an initiative created by Horsham Rotary Club with other local partners, including the local council and People for Places Leisure. It helps young sportspeople in the Horsham district reach their potential. They hand out dozens of awards each year to the most promising applicants. Horsham’s Bronwyn Thomas, recently selected for the Wales Senior Women’s squad for an international friendly, is among past recipients. Has Set 4 Success helped Emily? It has indeed. She said: “Set 4 Success has been brilliant, as it gives me free membership to leisure centres at The Pavilions, Billingshurst and Steyning. Going for runs can be quite tedious if you have to do it every day, but if you are in the gym you can use different apparatus, or I can use the pool too.
How far can she go then? Time will tell. Emily said: “The dream is that one day I’ll be running out with the England team! REPORT: BEN MORRIS PICTURES: TOBY PHILLIPS

T
hirty years ago, Annabelle Hughes wrote Horsham Houses, a book that revealed the rich and fascinating story of the buildings around us. Now, Dr Hughes has written a revised version, Horsham Houses Revisited, published by Friends of Horsham Museum. The revised version is the result of three decades of meticulous TGUGCTEJ CPF ƂNNU UQOG QH VJG gaps in Horsham’s story.
Thanks to Horsham Museum, AAH is able to offer a brief overview of the book; snippets noting just a small details of Dr Hughes’ book.
For a rich and detailed history, the new book is a must. For those with only a mild curiosity, then what follows offers a snapshot of the book and a new month-long exhibition at Horsham Museum, Through

In the Beginning
We know that Mesolithic man (8 - 4000BC) lived in the area, FWG VQ ƃKPV UECVVGTU HQWPF KP VJG district. Horsham was an ideal area for people to settle because of its belts of sandstone, which drains well. But at that time, people
were rather nomadic, living in tents. 6JG ƂTUV CEVWCN UGVVNGOGPV known is a farmstead at Chesworth, where an iron age loom weight and early glass bead have been found. Saxon Horsham
All around Horsham there are places with early Saxon names, but Horsham itself was not mentioned in a land charter until 947AD, as a place where horses bred. Although Horsham is mentioned by name, it doesn’t mean that *QTUJCO CU C FGƂPKVG RNCEG existed. Horsham may have been

With the Norman invasion of 1066, around 5,000 Saxon lords lost their property in what was the greatest re-distribution of land in English history. Horsham – a farm stead and possibly a Saxon church, became part of the estate owned by the De Braose family, based in Bramber.

In all likelihood, there was an open air church, along with some large timber and wattle long-houses near the ford - probably with bark roof shingles rather than turf. Archaeologists suggest that the main settlement lay around the junction of modern day Denne Road and East Street.
‘Scarfolkes’ Born
In 1202, King John signed a Royal charter granting the De Braose family freedom from Royal interference in the ‘honour’ of their lands in the Rape of Bramber. They could now seek to develop their land holdings entirely. Soon after, William de Braose was granted the status of ‘Borough’ for the small town of Horsham, which was built on the side of the old settlement. The East Street was a roadway linking the two. In order to encourage new settlement, plots of land were laid out around a large empty space, which became the place where the market was held, and is now the Carfax. Its original name, Scarfolkes, may refer to its emptiness. The Carfax was a large, funnelshaped space, wider at the top and much narrower at the bottom, where what is now the Causeway stretches down to the church.

The areas to live in were South Street and Causeway which, in 1524, had three home owners living there with property assessed at over £50, and a further three with property over £20 in value.

16th Century Town
A 1792 map of Horsham. ŠHDC/Friends of Horsham Museum
Horsham was becoming more and more wealthy. This translated itself in a number of ways - ways which would not seem alien to us today, such as investment in buildings. We know that, by the end of the 16th century, there were UKIPKĆ‚ECPV EJCPIGU VQ DWKNFKPI
techniques, which affected the construction of timber-framed buildings. Placing a chimney in the house, possibly because of brick construction, enabled two-storey houses to become more common.
At the beginning of the 18th century, something was happening in Horsham that has no clear determining factor. The town saw the construction of two notable houses, one today has the name Park House, the other the Manor House in the Causeway. Both can be described as estate JQWUGU TGĆƒGEVKPI VJG FGOCPF of two wealthy families to live in the town, rather than in an estate on the outskirts, away from the stench of the populace. What was it about Horsham that made people want to live in it and invest considerable sums of money in creating notable houses? As London grew, so did Horsham - the town was a place to make money.
Very Good Houses
By 1831, Pest House Lane had changed its name to New Road, as it led on to some buildings running along Brighton Road that had taken the name New Town. The road carried on out of the town with a branch road leading to St Leonard’s Forest, acquiring the name St Leonard’s Road; here some cottages had been built but between the two were still open Ć‚GNFU To the north of Horsham, along the road leading to Warnham pond, there had been some house building so by 1831 it was referred to as North Parade. It was described as a row of ‘very good houses’. Although Horsham’s Common had been enclosed in 1812, the town did not really develop this area until the 1860s. By the middle of the 19th century, Horsham had developed small hamlets or pockets of houses around its core.
Town Takes Shape
The 1870s and 80s would see this continue, for example: Horsham New Town along Brighton Road, CNQPI 5RTKPIƂGNF 4QCF CTQWPF 6TCHCNICT *QWUG HWTVJGT CƂGNF CV Southwater, and along the Crawley Road at Star Row, named after an inn that used to exist there. The key to the future development of these areas though, was interconnections. 0QTVJ 2CTCFG CNQPI 5RTKPIƂGNF Road, was isolated from the Railway Station, with people having to walk into the Carfax and up North Street, rather than straight across the land owned by the Hurst family. Horsham New Town and the developments along Brighton Road were also isolated from the station, even though the track ran nearby. It was with the growing demand for lower/middle class homes that the issues were resolved with the creation of new roads. Horsham, as we know it today, was beginning to take shape‌

All we need now is a cathedral and Southwater will become a city.

I think it’s a disgrace that they are charging people that amount of money to visit a children’s play park. I use the park to walk my dog, but normally drive there as it’s a ten minute walk from my house. As a resident, am I not entitled some green space to walk, free of charge?
