Notes from the Editor
The Many Issues Regarding Oreo Biscuits I was sat on the sofa with a cup of tea and an Oreo biscuit. Kids love ‘em, but they’re not a great accompaniment to hot drinks. At this point, I wanted to highlight biscuits more suitable for tea, so typed ‘Best Biscuits for Dunking’ into Google. I found a Top 10 list (compiled by wired.co.uk) which recommends Rich Tea, Digestives, Hobnobs, Bourbon Creams and Party Rings. All good. But Oreo makes the list too, so they know nothing. Anyway, I was dunking my Oreo (I just find the flavour too bland) whilst watching the news. They were discussing Brexit. It was one of those debates that could have been recorded one month, three months or six months ago and you wouldn’t know. “Second referendum blah blah!” “Unelected Euro bureaucrats blah blah!” I made a comment about Nigel Farage that I didn’t really mean. Something about him being the only man to have ever walked away unscathed from a helicopter crash and how different history might have been. The sort of remark you make privately and wouldn’t admit to publicly. Then I dipped an Oreo into my tea (when I split a biscuit in half, I like the cream to stay fully on one side and you don’t get that with an Oreo). I did a bit of channel hopping. Someone was discussing ‘I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of
Here.’ All agreed that Harry Redknapp’s love for his wife, Sandra, was very endearing. Whilst on Good Morning Britain, they’d reached the segment where producers invite on a guest that’s going to rile up Piers Morgan. On this occasion, a woman claimed that the new Barbie Kitchen Playset enforces an outdated gender stereotype. I picked up a magazine and another Oreo (the theme song is annoying too, isn’t it? The one by that group who sang about ten million butterflies). There was an article about Fortnite, an online game that now has over 200 million registered players across the world. For Christmas, you can ‘gift’ other players a ‘skin’. For the uninitiated, a skin is the costume your virtual player wears as they try to kill everyone else in the game. Fortnite causes more arguments in my house than anything and has led to the decline of my sons’ other passions and interests. I’m aware that the lack of any virtual ‘skins’ in their virtual stockings might lead to further accusations of us being the strictest and most Victorian parents in the entire world. I wondered what my Grandad Wilf would have made of it all as I reached into the biscuits once more (I had an Orea McFlurry once and that was nowhere near as good as the Crunchie one). Wilf passed away last month and it will be strange not having him around at
Christmas. He was very much a man of the countryside and would have cared little for gender neutral dolls, online battle games or the size of Holly Willoughby’s entourage in the Australian jungle. On Christmas Day, he would be up at The Plough in Lower Beeding, talking about horse racing to anyone who’d listen. It was tradition for his four sons and (when we were old enough) his grandsons to join him for a pint. That would inevitably become two, three, four pints. The wives would be preparing dinner back at the cottage (the lack of gender equality in my family is a disgrace!) Every year, Wilf would say: “This’ll probably be my last Christmas, so I’d best enjoy it!” After several phone calls, one of his irate daughters would drive to the pub and demand for us all to get home as food was literally being served. Wilf would be too drunk and far too late to cut the turkey. As a young man playing bar billiards over a pint, I didn’t think I was making treasured memories. It didn’t seem like a classic Christmas story. But getting away from the usual daily nonsense and spending time with family or friends, accepting their good and bad points, is now something I cherish. I thought about that as I ran out of Oreo. I could’ve done with just one more.

Wanted posters have appeared following a fire at Loxwood Meadow, home to the popular Loxwood Joust. The owners have offered a £10,000 reward after the barn and seating area was deliberately set alight in the early hours of Friday 27 July. The barn was unoccupied and no-one was hurt, with the quick response from the fire brigade ensuring that the fire did not spread to the surrounding woodland. Maurice Bacon, who owns the farmland, said: “The Loxwood Meadows are special and received recognition for its wealth of natural habitats and eco-friendly management. I hope the reward triggers people’s memory and lead to the capture of the arsonists.” If you have information, contact the police or call 101 quoting serial 212 of 27/07.

Set4Success recipients with BBC commentator Simon Brotherton and Invictus Games medallist Mike Goody
Promising sporting talents from across the Horsham District were recognised at the 2018 Set4Success awards at South Lodge Hotel. This year’s recipients are Owen Street (waterpolo) Charlie Ferris (triathlon) Amber Ranson (swimming) Emily Orman and Fynn Talley (football) Joshua Tavolieri and Alexandra Baker (basketball) Harvey Claridge (motorcycling) Orla Brothers (athletics) Thea Kirton (taekwondo) Caitlin MacGregor
(trampolining) Harry Baker (high jump) and Zack Wake, Ellie Worrall, Ryan Elnaggiar, Corlia Robertson and Marcus Rolfe (all judo). The Neilcott Trophy, given for outstanding achievement, was won by Brighton and England goalkeeper Emily Orman (see next page). Runners-up were Atlantis swimmer Amber Ranson and last year’s winner Issy Hayes, who retained her National Biathlon title. Trophies were presented by
Invictus Games gold medallist and S4S patron Mike Goody, whilst Simon Brotherton gave an inspirational talk about the joys and hazards of being a BBC commentator. EMILY
ORMAN
WINNER OF THE SET4SUCCESS NEILCOTT TROPHY
Football player Emily Orman received the top award at the Set4Success ceremony at South Lodge Hotel. The Neilcott Trophy is presented to an individual who, in the opinion of a panel including professional sportsmen and women, made the greatest achievement in 2018. The Millais pupil is a goalkeeper for Brighton & Hove Albion’s U16s and was named in England’s 20-player squad for three qualifying rounds of the UEFA Women’s European Championships.
England Experience For Emily, early morning training sessions at Bennetts Field in Horsham are reaping rewards. Already, she has captained her country, played in Italy and Norway, and now hopes to be part of Gemma Grainger’s squad for the second phase of the U17 UEFA Championships. “I've been regularly playing for England at U16 level. Most matches are played with a focus on development, but the U17 matches have been competitive. For the European Championships, we faced Moldova, Azerbaijan and Iceland, winning all three games, scoring 15 without conceding. Hopefully, we can progress from the next phase too and qualify for the finals in Bulgaria.”
“Pulling on an England shirt has been an incredible experience and it's also a challenge. At international level, players are grouped by birth year, as opposed to school year. I was born in November, so whereas I’m one of the oldest at Brighton, I’m one of the youngest in the England camp. There are girls playing in Development squads at club level, as they’re a school year above me. It’s good experience and will help me reach the next level.”
Right Direction At Brighton & Hove Albion U16s, Emily trains three times a week, with a fixture at the weekend, with the focus on development. “Currently, we play against other Women’s Super League teams, including Chelsea and Arsenal, but the focus is on improving our skills rather than winning. Next year, I hope to progress to the Development squad, which is the gateway to the first team.” “Brighton is a great club to be at. Talking to players at different clubs, I can appreciate that we’re fortunate to train at the Performance Centre and be part of a club committed to women’s football. We’re not equal with the boys yet, but there's a clear pathway with good coaching and physios. We’re certainly moving in the right direction!”
Dizzy Heights Emily is currently sidelined with a broken foot, having slipped on wet concrete as she returned to the changing rooms at a recent match. However, she hopes to be back for competitive fixtures in the New Year, making her presence felt between the posts for both club and country.
Pulling on an England shirt was an incredible experience for me!”
“As a goalkeeper, being tall gives me a big advantage. Someone else may be of the same ability level as me, but perhaps my height gives me the edge and I’ll be selected because of that presence. I do hear people say things like ‘she's only good because she's tall’ but I don’t let that affect me. If that’s really the case, then I will take it! But you need more than just size to succeed. Reaching the top requires commitment and all through the summer, I was down the field with a bag of footballs.” “Next year, if we qualify for the U17 European Championship finals, it will clash with my GCSE exams, so it’s not an easy ride!”

A-Level Drama pupils and Drama scholars at Christ’s Hospital were treated to a masterclass workshop with Hugh Bonneville. The star of Downtown Abbey, Paddington and W1A spent the afternoon offering feedback and direction, as well as answering questions from pupils about his vast experience as an actor. Director of Drama John Johnson said: “These opportunities to work with such fantastic actors are few and far between. It was so generous of Hugh Bonneville to give up his time to come to CH and impart his knowledge of performance. West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is launching a drive to increase its number of on-call firefighters. Over recent years, the number of people available ‘on-call’ to the emergency service has declined. On-call (formerly known as retained) firefighters are a vital part of the emergency service, with 14 of West Sussex’s 25 stations crewed solely by an on-call workforce attending fires, road traffic collisions, flooding incidents or raising fire safety awareness in the community. Stations in most urgent need of recruits include Storrington, Partridge Green, Turners Hill, Petworth and Steyning. To find out more visit the fire service web page and select ‘Fire & Rescue recruitment’ or follow West Sussex Fire & Rescue on Facebook and Twitter for updates on events.

In Historic Horsham lasting relationships with our clients and that’s key to our success.
Anna Verbrugge is celebrating 10 years as owner of Natural Beauty at the Hair Boutique. Anna spoke to AAH about the business and how it continues to evolve to meet the needs of clients...
Where is Natural Beauty? We’re located at 11 Market Square, an idyllic setting on the corner of The Causeway. We use the upstairs rooms of The Hair Boutique in a beautiful 14th century building. It doesn’t look very big from outside, but it’s like a Tardis inside and our clients love the quirky characteristics. What treatments do you offer? We offer an extensive range of holistic health and beauty treatments. For our hot stone and deep tissue massages, we use natural organic aromatherapy oils from
Neal’s Yard Remedies. We also offer Dermalogica facial treatments, gel nails, waxing, manicures, pedicures, eye lash extensions and spray tanning. What sets Natural Beauty apart from other salons? I have a wonderful team with over 40 years’ experience. Between the three of us, we’ve worked aboard famous cruise ships and as in-flight beauty therapists, learning about different cultures and gaining experience of therapies and treatments from around the world. We take great pride in building long
Has much changed during a decade in business? The biggest change was expanding the team, which came about when I had a baby. To keep pace with the modern world, our clients can use our online App called Vagaro. It’s just a more convenient way to book an appointment, as it’s connected to our booking system. But we’re just as happy for you to call the salon the old-fashioned way! Do you have any perks for new or repeat customers? We offer 15% off to all customers that work in Horsham as I strongly believe in supporting local businesses and the community. We also have loyalty cards for returning customers. As a first-time customer, you will receive 20% off your booking.

GETTING THE MOST FROM YOUR RETIREMENT WITH LATER LIFE LENDING! The later life lending market has changed so much in recent years and you might be surprised to find out how many options are available to the over 55’s, that offer both security and flexibility. Do you know the difference between a retirement mortgage and an equity release loan? They are very different! A retirement or lifetime mortgage does not mean that you will have a debt that increases each year. Interest payments can be met, and overpayments can be made to avoid the mortgage increasing. There are a wide range of products now available, which can be used to unlock the money tied up in your home without you having to move.
FREQUENTLY ASKED ‘CONCERNS’
YOUR FUTURE – YOUR WAY At Private Wealth it all starts with a conversation. Our expert advisers will consider your individual situation with care and compassion, as we know that these decisions are crucially important and maybe sensitive to discuss. We offer a free no-obligation detailed review of your current circumstances and are happy to answer any concerns you may have.
THERE ARE MANY REASONS YOU MAY WANT TO RELEASE EQUITY, INCLUDING… Repaying your existing mortgage Funding for care in your own home Home improvements Gifts for family members Travel and holidays Making life more comfortable Supplement your pension income
ABOUT RELEASING EQUITY Is using my house equity safe? Yes. The plans we recommend carry guarantees and features to ensure that you can release cash from your home safely and securely and must be overseen by a solicitor. All plans are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and can only be advised upon by professionals like ourselves who hold specific qualifications. Will I end up with negative equity? No. As standard, all approved products and plans offer a “No Negative Equity Guarantee” that ensures that no matter how long you live or what happens to property prices, you will never owe more than the value of your home, so won’t leave your family with any debt. Will I reduce the value of my estate? You will be in control. We will talk you through a personal illustration that lets you know how much money you could raise and what it will cost. Some plans let you guarantee a portion of your property you wish to be left to your beneficiaries.

Untraditional crackers, seeds, stones
“We’re looking at other foraged foods as we try to create a menu that tells the story of the garden.”
WILD WONDERS Jean Dalport, Executive Chef at Interlude Restaurant at Leonardslee Gardens, Lower Beeding
INTERLUDE OFFERS CULINARY JOURNEY OF LEONARDSLEE From the moment the first dish arrives, it’s evident that Interlude is going to be a unique experience. The tree of crackers is described as a “visual representation of the gardens throughout the year.” A variety of crackers made with seeds and squid ink are so thoughtfully portrayed as leaves that it seemed almost a shame to pluck them from the branch and coat them with the sublime smoked cream. The menu continued to surprise and excite in equal measure. Whether it was a delicious ball of estate rabbit served in a ceramic pot or foraged acorn incorporated into a divine chocolate crémeux, the evening provided a culinary journey of the Leonardslee estate. And yet, the restaurant was almost empty. For whilst Interlude is up-and-running in the grade II listed manor, the gardens will not open tothe public until next spring.
Executive Chef Jean Delport said: “Initially, the idea was to open the restaurant at the same time as the gardens, but there has been delays due to planning regulations and building work. However, after extensive restoration, the house was ready. As far as Interlude was concerned, we couldn't stall any longer, as we’d employed staff.” “It’s not the ideal scenario, as we don’t have the footfall that we would expect as part of a major attraction. But it has given us the opportunity to work through the winter and prepare for when the gardens open. There’s a lot of work going on around the estate, but the driveway is accessible and we want people here for a meal or afternoon tea.” Leonardslee belongs to Penny Streeter, who also owns Mannings Heath Golf and Wine Estate and Benguela Cove vineyards in South Africa. Penny’s son, Adam, has spent the last 18 months overseeing the intensive restoration of the historic gardens and Grade II listed house, as Leonardslee prepares to open to the public again.
Foraged acorn, 70% Guanaja chocolate, brandy, coffee
Wandering Woodland Jean spent three years working at nom nom, a Benguela Cove restaurant in Somerset West near Cape Town, gaining a reputation for fine dining. He is joined by fellow South African chef Ruan Pretorius and together they have created a menu using ingredients from the estate and selected local farms.
Pumpkin, pine
Scallop, green almonds, apple, nettle
There are dishes incorporating sweet chestnuts, some of the gardens’ 150 varieties of pine tree, rowan berries preserved in syrup, watercress from the estate’s fast-flowing streams, lavender petals, elderberries and birch tree sap. A decliously delicate ginger beer treat incorporates the scent of the meadowsweet flower. Occasionally, South African influence shines through, with the estate’s four species of deer used in a biltong and mushroom dish.
“When we first arrived, we saw a beautiful botanical garden that wasn’t producing much wild food,” says Jean. “But through spring and summer, we discovered that the gardens were producing natural ingredients in a way we hadn’t envisaged.” “Dealing with mushrooms was scary. There are wild mushrooms back home, but I've never had the opportunity to learn much about them. So, we brought in a wild food expert to help us identify what we can use and now have half a dozen mushrooms we’re happy to work with. We’re looking at other foraged foods and working with the gardeners to cultivate more, as we try to create a menu that tells the story of the garden.” “We harvested many fresh herbs, fruits, nuts, plants and leaves in the summer and that will carry us through autumn and winter. But going forward, we want to grow as much as we can here, so

we’ll be creating a vegetable garden and herb house so that the menu will be always evolving as the seasons change.”
A Long Night Diners be warned – it’s going to be a long night! With the option of 16 or 20 courses, the experience takes time, especially as every dish has a story to tell. The beef from Trenchmore farm in nearby Cowfold has been aged for 72 days on the bone to maximise flavour; honey has been harvested for months and blended with floral flavours to create a quirky s’more dessert; nettle and dock seeds from the estate are used to give earthly characteristics to the bread. Even the exuberant egg, potato and Exmoor caviar dish can be traced to the estate.
The dining room at Interlude
“I always loved chickens as my dad kept them,” says Jean. “We have built a new chicken coop and have a small flock here. They move across the pasture feeding on seeds, grain and other nutrients in the soil. As a result, the eggs are amazing.”
“We recreate these conditions in the dish, but there is a lot of work behind it, as even the yoke is cooked in oils very slowly for an hour and a half. There’s a hint of nostalgia too, as we serve brioche soldiers that reminds people of childhood memories.” “There's nothing worse than having stiff fine dining and that's not what we’re about. We want this to be a relaxing experience and that’s why we start with the tree of crackers, as it helps break the ice. When people sit down, they’re not entirely sure what they're going to get, as it’s about enjoying something that's a little bit different.” Restaurant Interlude Wednesday to Friday: 5 – 10pm Saturday: 5pm – 11pm Reservations: (01403) 289490 www.restaurant-interlude.co.uk info@restaurant-interlude.co.uk

Fiona Hamilton initially launched Earthkind at the Horsham Repair Cafe
MIXED RAILWAY SLEEPERS • KILN DRIED LOGS AND KINDLING • BUILDING AGGREGATES •
A Horsham market trader is encouraging us all to adopt a more sustainable approach to shopping. Earthkind, founded by Fiona Hamilton, aims to reduce plastic pollution by offering a refill service. The organic stall, which Fiona takes to the Local Produce Market in the Carfax twice monthly, includes pasta, rice, legume, pulses, grain, oats, nuts, seeds, coconut sugar, dried fruit, popcorn, olive oil and maple syrup. “People bring their own jars and containers and fill them with organic dry foods,” says Fiona. “I have recycled paper bags in case people forget their containers and even my tape and labelling is compostable. It’s good for the environment and it’s affordable as there’s no plastic packaging.” Growing up, Fiona was an environmentally-conscious child who would pick up litter, take quick showers, turn off lights and make new things from old fabric.
But like many others, it was Blue Planet that truly opened her eyes to problems caused by plastic pollution and inspired positive action. “I received an email from the Marine Conservation Society and completed an online survey of my plastic use,” recalls Fiona. “I didn't think I used plastic excessively, but the survey highlighted many ways that I relied on it. The results were horrifying and consequently, I committed to giving up plastic for one month.” “I was working in Brighton at the time and started buying organic produce from an excellent shop called HISBE (How It Should BE). I would fill up containers and bring them back home with me on the bus. When the month was over, it seemed odd to revert to plastic again, so I chose to carry on. However, my contract in Brighton was over and with a lack of organic alternatives locally, I set up my own business."
Earthkind was only formed in August, initially at the Horsham Repair Café at the Quaker Meeting House. Fiona’s ethos tied in nicely with that of the popular monthly café, and with the encouragement of others, she decided to take the business to market. “It’s difficult being in the Carfax,” says Fiona. “At the repair café, you’re dealing with like-minded people who don’t need to be converted. When it comes to recycling and environmental, there are many people who still find it overwhelming. Some think they should throw out all their plastics, whereas it would be better to re-use everything they have for as long as possible. There’s also misconceptions about what can and can’t be recycled. A huge number of beauty products still end up in landfill even though they could be recycled or returned.” “People shouldn’t worry. They don’t have to do all these different things at the same time. Changes can be made one step at a time.”
Fiona plans to grow the business alongside the needs of her customers, with cashew nuts, pine nuts and nutritional yeast for vegans among the items that Earthkind hopes to introduce in future. Another possibility is a delivery service. People can register an interest in this on the website. “A lot of people appreciate the convenience of a delivery service and I know it’s hard for people to commit to coming into town with containers on selected days. If I was to deliver and refill, hopefully that would encourage more people to use organic produce and make a small, positive difference.” Meet Fiona at the Earthkind stall on the first and third Thursday of every month in Horsham, the second Thursday of the month at Wisborough Green market and at the Horsham Repair Café, held on the first Saturday of the month. For more details and to register your interest in the delivery service, please visit https://www.earthkind.shop

FIRS FESTIVE FUN IN THE
Making Christmas Memories at Furze Firs
Magic of Christmas Wouldn’t it be wonderful to drive out to the countryside as a family and take your pick from thousands of Christmas trees? After hacking it down with a saw, you could strap it down to the roof of your car and inject a touch of magic back into the festive season. Well, that’s exactly what you can do at Furze Firs in Slinfold, near Billingshurst. The business was formed by three people who at all lived in houses opposite the 22-acres of fields off Furze View. After several years of planting and nurturing, the trees have been available to the public to buy for two years.
The Gill family choose their tree for Christmas
Scandinavian Inspiration
The Hardy Norwood
Peter and Sue Barry, who live a stone’s throw from the plantation, run the self-cut section of Furze Firs, with two other partners leading the commercial side of the company.
Furze Firs’ Norwood trees grow naturally in Georgia, where seed is collected and grown in nurseries before being planted and nurtured in Denmark for two years. Saplings are then planted at Furze Firs, where they require regular maintenance and nurturing.
Peter said: “When the children were all little, they used the fields to race go-karts and make dens in the bushes. It’s been a great place to live. As the fields were originally used for turf, the topsoil was taken off so it wasn't great farming land. But certain trees grow well in clay, so we decided to plant Christmas trees.
Peter and Sue Barry live on Furze View
“We have friends in Scandinavia and every year, they head out just before Christmas and cut a tree down. We wanted to bring that seasonal magic here. Families love it as it’s more memorable than driving down to the supermarket and putting one in a trolley.”
“Our first batch was planted in 2009 and started to be ready last Christmas,” says Peter. “It is a long process and it takes a lot of work to keep trees in good health. There’s weeding, fertilising and pruning to be done throughout, but it's a great business to be involved in.” “Most people tend to buy a Norway Spruce tree, but they don’t suit a warm house and drop spines. The Norwood is a hardier plant and we've had people saying that they still look just as good in March after being planted in the garden!”
Freddie, Monty and Archie Potbury offer a tree carrying service at Furze Firs for a reasonable fee of £2!

Christmas Tree Blindness For those in a hurry, or for those who don’t want to get their shoes mucky, a selection of ready-cut trees is available at the entrance along with stands, log reindeers and hand-made wreaths created in Slinfold. But
to enjoy Furze Firs fully, it’s best to let the kids take charge. Sue said: “There are so many trees that you can have tree blindness! Children run into the field and want the first one that they see, before changing their minds almost instantly. The range of shapes and sizes of the trees makes searching for
the right one very exciting.” “That is the joy of it for us. Seeing the kids happy and running amongst the trees is priceless.”

Sublime Afternoon Tea Experience at
Leonardslee House REVIEW Afternoon Tea at Leonardslee House It started with a scotch egg. But this was no ordinary creation, it was a pinnacle of savoury deliciousness, made with pulled pork and an egg with a yolk of the most golden splendour from Leonardslee House’s free range coup. Each day, Chef Jean Delport collects eggs from the Sussex Red hens and eight other breeds to create succulent dishes and sauces. Nearly every wonderful item on Leonardslee’s Afternoon Tea menu is home grown or home raised, then cooked and beautifully prepared in the new state-ofthe-art kitchens that Jean designed in the restored manor house and estate - a major investment by the Streeter family. This array of savoury and sweet treats is brought to your table in a magnificent display, introduced by charming staff. With Leonardslee’s own custom-designed tableware resonating the floral theme of the 200 acre woodland gardens - probably the finest in England - it is as much a visual as a gastronomic feast. The elegant tea rooms offer superb views over the gardens through tall french windows.
Afternoon Tea at Leonardslee
The grade II listed Leonardslee House has been extensively restored
“This array of savoury and sweet treats is brought to your table in a magnificent display, introduced by charming staff.”
The special quality of the experience begins on arrival at the Italianate mansion, as if invited to tea by old and very well-connected friends. There is a warm greeting in the beautiful colonnaded hallway, with its original tiled floor and sunlight flooding down from the impressive light well overhead. We selected the Savoury Menu from the three presented. The others are the Classic, with the most delicately cut finger sandwiches instead of savouries, and a children’s menu. This is all perfectly harmonised by the tinkling melodies of the self-playing piano, and a glass of Benguela Cove bubbles from the owner’s vineyard, of course.
Viewing the choice of savoury dishes, I opted for the aforementioned scotch egg and my partner for the eggs royale, probably the best she has had, with an exquisite bed of muffins and bathed in delicious hollandaise sauce. Other treats included sausage rolls - a heavenly confection of locally-bred pork, apple, walnut, celery and spices. The home-baked raisin and plain scones were yet a further highlight. Of the lightest, most delicious texture, they melted in the mouth, set off by lemon curd or strawberry jam and the chef’s own clotted cream. Next a superb festival of patisseries: an exceptional treacle tart in miniature, lavender macaroons, and chocolate creations to bedazzle the eye and taste buds. Finally, the cake trolley. We chose a Battenberg and three-layered lemon cake, the like of which we had never experienced. A true feast. Afternoon Tea at around £40pp, perfect for tea or for lunch. www.leonardsleegardens.co.uk/food/

A GENTLE APPROACH
TO EXERCISE There are many people who would like to partake in gentle exercise in a social setting, but find regular fitness classes too demanding. Step forward Paracise... Paracise was founded by Sarah Goldsack less than a year ago, but its growth has been remarkable. Already, over 70 instructors train over 4,000 people every week in venues across the country. But its founder believes there are millions more who could benefit. Sarah said: “In 2014, I started to feel weak down my right side and was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy, an incurable muscular wastage disease. For a year, I was in and out of hospital and met many people in the neurological department affected by Parkinson's, strokes, head injuries and things like Multiple Sclerosis.” “ I've been a fitness instructor for over 30 years, so I was talking to people about
the exercises they could do. I discovered that most were highly motivated to exercise but didn't think there was a programme suited to their needs. They didn’t feel confident enough to turn up to high energy classes, felt intimidated in a gym environment and floor work regularly came up as a stumbling block.”
“When I suffered a ruptured knee, I could relate to their concerns. Having undergone surgery, I created a programme to keep me moving and active from day one, starting with simple steps for short periods of time. Gradually, my movement became less limited and I spent more time exercising. The programme worked so well that I started teaching it to the public.”
“People were motivated to exercise but didn't think there was a programme suited to their needs.”
“Quickly, we were seeing 50 or 60 people coming to each class, which caught the attention of other instructors. We predominantly appeal to people aged 40 and above, as Paracise is for people rehabilitating. We see people who have had breast cancer, so it might be that they are tired after chemotherapy and using it as a transition back to fitness. We also see people after knee or hip surgery, once they’ve been cleared by a healthcare professional. The benefits are wide ranging.”

“After our early success, many fitness instructors contacted me and were excited about providing the programme. So, they signed up for a Paracise course and it’s gone from strength to strength.
The Instructor One of those instructors is Coralie Clarke, who runs Paracise at Roffey Millennium Hall every Wednesday. Coralie works as a fitness instructor at K2 leisure centre and attended one of Sarah’s classes, as she was interested in introducing exercise to older people. “I like the fact that Paracise is aimed at a demographic that wasn’t being catered for, said Coralie. “There are many people for whom gym classes are too much and this is a great starting point for those who want to exercise more. “For people who are recovering from an injury or suffer from arthritis or fibromyalgia, there is little choice. But this is a class that makes them feel good, helps improve mobility, flexibility and balance.
“Everyone can move at their own pace and we follow a series of slow stretch movements in an accessible way. Sarah has also selected wonderful music and that is an element that people love.â€? “Once a month, I take a class at Age UK in Lavinia House and the music helps immensely. Even if people are not able to do the moves, they still enjoy it and sing along to Louis Armstrong or Michael BublĂŠ! It also helps with the rhythm if you know the song.â€?
The Regulars Gail Webb from Horsham was one of the first to join Coralie’s class in July and is full of praise for the exercise. “It appealed to me as it looked gentle but still provided a workout, said Gail. “I have arthritis in my toes and this helps me with balance. I’m also finding that with each passing week, my brain and muscles are becoming used to the steps. “Coralie is great and if you can't do a step, you don't need to
Sarah Goldsack believes Paracise could help millions of people

worry. Other exercise forms can be intense and I can't do that as I'm 73, so for me, this is a way of staying healthy in a relaxed atmosphere.” Another regular is Hazel McPherson, who at 88-years-old is still determined to keep fit. “What I like is that there’s no pressure,” says Hazel. “When I first joined, I couldn't stand on my tiptoes but gradually the muscles become used to it. Now, I can do it comfortably. I have found other classes are too strenuous for me. I either can't keep up or end up aching for the rest of the day. But this is good for me and my daughter, as she suffers with shoulder pain. In class, she’s always asking me if I’m okay, but I’m fine!” Sarah is exploring ways of expanding the business (including one we’re not allowed to mention yet!) but Paracise is already attracting interest from across Europe and even America. But Sarah won’t be altering the classes drastically... “One of the most important things is for the Paracise formula to stay the same. It must be an entry point for people wanting and needing exercise for many different reasons. A class cannot progress together, as it’s then inaccessible to others starting out. When people are ready to move on, that’s a positive thing, but that next step is not Paracise. Beyond this stage, there are thousands of choices!”

REVELATIONS FROM HORSHAM’S
PRIVATE PAST A new book produced by the Friends of Horsham Museum details the forgotten private schools of the town.
The boys at Manor House School and (bottom) the air raid shelter at the same school (Photo: HDC/Horsham Museum)
Former teacher Liz Vaughan, who spent most of her career at Leechpool Primary, has been gathering statistics, anecdotes and photographs for over a decade. It is hoped that the book, The Best Years of Your Life? A History of Private Education in Horsham 1887 – 2000, will be published in time for Christmas. Liz said: “It all started when somebody came in many years ago and asked about New Place School. Nobody at the Museum knew what it was and it fell on me to find out. I discovered it was a private school on the Causeway, before moving to a big house along Guildford Road, where Irwin Drive is today. New Place was a fascinating school as
horses were kept there. Instead of sports day, it hosted a gymkhana!” “From that moment, whenever somebody asked about private schools, I tended to handle it. Some people come into the Museum, but we’ve also read stories through letters to the County Times. Gradually, we collated more information about more private schools. It’s only been the last five years that I've actively gone looking for stories relating to certain schools.”
“New Place was a fascinating school. Instead of sports day, it would host a gymkhana!”

Pupils at Herons Ghyll enjoy Shakespeare (Photo: HDC/Horsham Museum)
“Certainly, life at boarding school could be traumatic and very tough. I spoke to one person who still lives on the Causeway and he only saw his mother every 18 months and his father every three years. It was often a challenging childhood.” “For a long time, the project was just something I enjoyed, as everyone in the Friends group tends to have an area of interest. It wasn’t until relatively recently that Jeremy Knight, the Museum manager, suggested I put a book together.”
Famous Alumni Whilst it’s difficult to gauge a precise number as some educational institutions would change location or name, the book references more than 20 in and around town. These include Heathfield, Springfield Park, Herons Ghyll, Forest Grange, St
George’s, Manor House and Parkfield. Contributions from the public has brought certain schools to life with incredible photographs and snippets of memories and information. But little is known about others... Liz said: “Unfortunately, I didn’t uncover much about Springfield Park Girls’ School. It closed suddenly and people haven’t come forward to talk about it. Some independent schools, including Christ’s Hospital and Farlington, continue to thrive and there’s no need to feature them as they have their own books.” “On the other hand, I received an incredible bundle of photos from Forest Grange and firsthand accounts of life at Heron's Ghyll, which was a very posh school for the daughters of gentlemen, with Virginia
McKenna among its alumni. The thriller writer Hammond Innes went to the Causeway School and Donald Campbell attended Manor School.” “St George’s in Worthing Road cropped up regularly, as it was apparently highly selective and would turn away pupils whose fathers did not have professional occupations. The late Graham Wakefield was a great source of information, particularly regarding St John's College, which was a very strange place with a bullying culture and strict procedures.”
More Revelations?
Lessons at Parkside School in Horsham (Photo: HDC/Horsham Museum)
There is undoubtedly more information waiting to be unearthed. For example, little is known about Linden House on East Street, which closed in the 1920s. But Liz isn’t sure that she’ll be updating the book for a second edition anytime soon. “Only recently at the Museum’s 125th anniversary celebration, Jeremy introduced me to three people who had attended private schools in Horsham and had new information. So, there are still people coming out of the woodwork!” “When you start talking to people about something they don't normally talk about, interesting facets of information are revealed. But I'm not sure if I'm going to do any more with the book. Instead, I’d next like to look at Horsham schools in the 19th century, working from the census, as oppose to photographs and stories.” The Best Years of Your Life? A History of Private Education in Horsham 1887 – 2000 by Liz Vaughan will be published through the Friends of Horsham Museum and will be available soon from the Museum.

For many years, I put art to the back of my mind. But seven years ago, I visited a gallery and this solitary piece in an otherwise empty room inspired me to paint again. Regrettably, I can’t even remember the name of the artist!
Initially, I created small pieces using acrylics and oils. People started complimenting my work and then one day somebody said: ‘How much for that painting?” I had no idea, so I asked for £50!
Once a week, I went to the Art Academy in Horsham. I also developed by talking to other artists, looking at a wide selection of work, trying different techniques and learning from mistakes.
Gradually, I developed a style of my own, with strong contrasts between light and dark. I love the effect that is created by blending reds and oranges with black. The effect just draws people in.

Modern Mortgage Deals Show a Duty of Care ‘How much can I borrow’ tends to be the most asked question of anyone at AToM! Only a few years ago, that could easily have been up to 8 x income with the minimal of fuss subject of course to loan to value and certainty of income! Oh, how things have changed, and rightly so! Those were times with little control and the lengthy recession subsequently bore testament! Today it is so much more intense! For example, a lender will require to know your monthly budget spend figures, right down to every direct debit on your bank statements, including council tax, insurances, mobile phones, lottery payments and gym membership! From these monthly outgoings, the lender will look at affordability and decide from there what mortgage amount might be available to you. However, on the other side, not only can it be restrictive depending on your monthly outgoings, but it can also be very generous depending on what little outgoings you have! The lender has a duty of care to make sure you can afford your mortgage today, as well as when rates rise and specifically to it being considered affordable over a 5 year period. We have seen the phasing out of income multiples and the introduction of affordability models. The amount you can borrow will depend on your monthly net income set against expenditure and living costs. However, this also works positively for the right loan to value, right affordability and right customer, as lenders are willing to offer a little bit more if you fit their specific affordability model. With the increase in requirements, the time taken in research prior to recommendation for a suitable mortgage product has also increased, as have the lenders own underwriting procedures. So, beware if you are in a rush!

MAGICAL
MEMORIES BRINGING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF BRITISH BALLOONING
In 1783, a sheep, a duck and a rooster became the first hot air balloon passengers when they soared over the French court in Versailles. They flew for eight minutes, rising 1,500ft before landing safely. Over the course of the next century, the hot air balloon became synonymous with the golden age of exploration, epitomised by the novels of Jules Verne. In the modern era of internet deals and tighter margins, balloon flight has become accessible to the masses. But has it lost its allure as a result? Experienced pilots James Palmer and Brian and Cecilia Smith certainly felt it had. So, two years ago, they created British Balloon Flights in Wisborough Green, with the aim of making hot air ballooning a magical experience once again. Brian said: “If you walk into a pub and ask people if they’ve been on a hot air balloon, you’d see a lot of hands go up. Ask if they enjoyed it, and the response is mixed. That’s because there is usually a dozen other people in the basket and nobody knows anyone as they’ve bought a discounted flight online.”
“We felt that there was a market for exclusive flights for just two or four people, where everything is done to the highest quality. That’s proven to be the case.”
Making Memories British Balloon Flights is a subsidiary of Airworks Worldwide Limited, which operates commercial flights for corporate customers. Through working with businesses and venue partners including Goodwood, the company holds an Air Operators Certificate (AOC), recognised by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). For its leisure flights, the company operates two balloons, including a 105,000-cubic foot ‘Harlequin’ that can take a maximum of five people, including the pilot. Passengers are transferred to and from the partner venues including Knepp Castle, South Lodge, Alexander House and Amberley Castle in a 4x4 vehicle and treated to fresh tea and coffee as they watch the balloon being prepared. After the flight, there’s English sparkling wine and canapés, with photographs of the experience provided on a USB stick.
James said: “Our company manager, Sada Ray, is like a personal guide and does everything possible to make the day special. Some people like to chat to the crew and occasionally even help with the set-up, whilst others just enjoy a drink and watch.” ‘Where we take off depends on the forecast and wind direction, so it may be that we pick up clients from Cowdray Park and take off in Wisborough Green. Wherever we fly though, you’re guaranteed great views. We feel Sussex is one of the most beautiful places to fly anywhere in the world. We work with pilots who have flown in all manner of far-flung countries that cannot match the South Downs, coastal areas and country homes we see.” “Usually, the best times for flying are early morning and late afternoon, which happen to be the two most evocative times of the day, especially at this time of the year, when the sunsets are stunning.” “We often say that if you want to be a millionaire balloonist, you need to start with two million in the bank! But what gives us pleasure is providing people with an experience they'll never forget.”

Balloon Festival Despite only launching the business in 2016, Brian has been flying for over 40 years. He and his wife Cecilia founded the Wisborough Green Hot Air Balloon Festival in 1991, which this year saw 14 balloons take off from the village green. The first event raised money for Comic Relief and every year since, depending on the weather, the festival has raised thousands for good causes. Brian said: “This year, we raised money for Chestnut Tree House and the weather was perfect. We had 14 balloons with many friends and fellow pilots coming together to raise nearly £10,000 for the children’s hospice.” “It’s a fantastic day, as about 2,000 people all sit around the green, watching the balloons take off. The pilots are wonderful as they give their time freely, and so many people in the village help out in different ways.” With others now helping to grow the festival, Brian and Cecilia can devote more time to flying. They can sometimes be spotted flying a twoman balloon called ‘The Chariot’. Rather than a basket, people are strapped into a five-point harness on a small seat.

FEELING Horsham Boxing Club hosts Annual Show
Junior boxing coach Dan Purchase talks to Ryan Wilson, 10, during his skills bout at the Holbrook Club
There was fantastic action and local success as Horsham Boxing Club hosted its annual show at The Holbrook Club on Saturday 17 November.
Brighton ABC, a heavier opponent he'd faced twice in skills bouts. The fast-starting Horsham boxer showed composure and skill to dominate rounds and deservedly claim a unanimous points win against his game opponent.
The evening started with two skills bouts, with no winner declared. These bouts provide young boxers with the opportunity to gain experience in the ring in front of a large crowd.
Josh Mercer was next to step through the ropes. Still only 15-years-old, Josh is a veteran of over 20 bouts and has too often been on the wrong side of split decisions. So, he was well-supported as he took on the noticeably heavier George Peck from Chichester. In one of the bouts of the night, the two went toe-to-toe and both showed great skill. Josh was declared the points winner and deserved his hard-fought victory.
Horsham’s Ryan Wilson, aged only 10 and weighing 29 kilos, matched up well against Guildford City boxer Andre Whitby. Young Horsham southpaw James Dawes, 11, also demonstrated slick skills against Max Pipkin from Rosehill Boxing Club. The first fully competitive bout of the evening featured Horsham’s Zack Rhioui. Zack was competing in only his second full bout after claiming an excellent majority points win in Titchfield in October. At the Holbrook Club, he faced Harley Pettit of East
A ring debut for Horsham Callum Knapp was next on the card and he didn't disappoint. Forcing a count in round one, Callum jumped on his opponent, Reg Tully from Billericay, and forced an early finish. Coach Dan Purchase mentors young Zack Rhioui

Horsham club captain and junior trainer Simon Bayliss faced a rematch against Roy Ford. Last time, both men showed incredible fitness and heart, with the Canvey Island boxer edging the contest. But this time, cheered on by a home crowd, Simon started the faster and landed the more eye-catching blows as he chalked up another great win for Horsham. Madav Purcell, another youth boxer making his Horsham BC debut, continued in the same vein with a devasting first round knock out of Hugo Lelbrue from Ashford. Madav demonstrated that he has strength to match the skills he’s developed while at the club.

Horsham didn't have everything their own way, with losses for debutant Oscar Nicholls, who boxed well and showed great determination but lost on points to Hamzah Butt from Billericay. Tom Kelly found it tough against the hard-hitting Lee Wherle from PEJ in Margate. Harry Mattock competed in a heavyweight bout against Aaron Morley from Hornchurch. Harry was looking to build on a recent win and hurt his taller opponent on a few occasions, but lost out over the distance.

Libby Baker, 18, had her first outing for Horsham against Lucy Whitby. Libby started cautiously as her opponent was quick out of the blocks, but a great shot in the middle of the first round meant that Lucy was unable to continue. The other female fight of the night saw Josie Janes lose on points to Seema Aggarwal of Repton Boxing Club. The final bout of the evening took some of the gloss off an excellent event as Horsham’s George Porter dislocated his shoulder in the first round and was unable to continue. Junior coach Dan Purchase and Senior coaches John and Danny Essex would like to thank attending clubs, officials and the Holbrook Club, along with the spectators, for a great evening of boxing. Letters to the Editor editor@aahorsham.co.uk
Cuddling for Survival RSPB Pulborough Brooks RSPB/Dave Chester Nash
Fears for the Future of Bus Routes Bill King of Horsham, writes: I am a pensioner living in the Comptons Lane area. On accessing the North Horsham Parish Council website recently, I was confronted by a poster advertising a bus survey being conducted by West Sussex County Council. WSCC is looking at the subsidised bus routes they support, no doubt with a view to save money by chopping some of them. This survey is not highlighted on the Horsham District Council website. Quite a few of the Metro and Compass routes serve Horsham and its villages including Metrobus routes 61 (North Heath), 65 (Comptons Lane, Elm Grove and Oakhill), 98 (Lambs Farm and North Horsham) and 200 (North Horsham and North Heath) What is remarkable about this public survey is that no one I know seems to be aware of it. I am a member of the Horsham U3A, which has a membership
of over 900 retired people, many of whom use the buses. I have spoken to many people in this organisation and again no one knew of it. I use the No. 65 bus several times a week to get to town. During the week, the town is mostly populated by retired people, helping to keep the high street going. There were no posters advertising this survey at either Horsham Bus Station or the
Carfax Bus Stops until I raised the matter. In addition, they did place blank questionnaires at Horsham Bus Station. I have been running a one man campaign to try and let the older people of Horsham know what’s going on, as for elderly residents, the bus service is a vital lifeline. Personally, I have handed out posters to the regular passengers on the bus I use and emailed retired people within the social groups I belong to. But I wonder how many other decisions have been taken by WSCC based on surveys which we know nothing about? Editor: Hats off, Bill, for your fine efforts! Being a monthly magazine, I’ve not been able to highlight this issue as quickly as I would have liked and responses to this survey closed on 18 November. If anyone needs to know more about this, visit https://haveyoursay. westsussex.gov.uk/ highways-and-transport/buses/
A Bit of Consideration on All Sides Adam Lea of Broadbridge Heath writes: I have noticed in the Letters section a lot of replies about the Highway Code terminology regarding cycling two abreast. I would like to add my thoughts. The statement about not riding two abreast is not a legal requirement, it is advisory (it doesn't have MUST before it). There are occasions where it is desirable to ride two abreast, for example for cyclists to chat, or to discourage dangerous overtakes. The latter would not be an issue if motorists realised that passing with six inches clearance at 50mph is not safe for the cyclist. A motorist should be using the full width of the road when overtaking a cyclist, not trying to overtake and keep left of centre.
When I overtake a cyclist, I like to mentally put a car in place of the cyclist and overtake accordingly. A point apparently missed by the respondent is that if a group of cyclists is two abreast, they are half the length as the same number of single file cyclists. It is surely easier to overtake a group that is 20m long than one that is 40m long? Using the full width of the road to overtake means that it is irrelevant whether they are single file or two abreast, you are giving them equivalent space when passing, but being two abreast means a driver gets past them twice as quickly. A bit of consideration and give and take on all sides would be optimal overall. Cyclists don't deliberately go out to delay motorists, but safety issues mean it is sometimes unavoidable. We are all just
trying to get somewhere. If some people really are irritated by cyclists perhaps they should stop rat running along the teeny tiny country lanes and stick to the A-roads, which are less populated by cyclists. Editor: Thank you Adam for your common sense remarks. The Letters stem from an editorial I wrote when I felt that cyclists had - if not entirely deliberately - delayed hundreds of motorists by choosing not to pull over on the narrow road through Amberley and Houghton, a main route to the coast. It was a hot Sunday in summer and I felt that the common sense thing for two cyclists on a leisurely ride would have been to pull over for a couple of minutes and let by all those people just trying to get to the beach.
Have you ever gone for a walk in the woods and suddenly found yourself being shouted at by a persistent chirping coming from inside the brambles? You’d expect the owner of such a loud voice to be a big, boisterous bird, but if you stop and wait, a tiny, slightly dumpy brown individual will eventually hop into view – a wren! Their latin name, Troglodytes troglodytes, is one of the few I can remember, literally translating to ‘cave-dweller’ and referring to this bird’s habit of disappearing into small gaps. Male wrens spend most of the year ferociously defending their territories from potential rivals and shouting loudly at anyone who dares to come too close. However, when winter arrives, they must drastically change their tactics if they have any chance of surviving the cold months. Suddenly, they want to make friends with their fellow wrens and if they happen to have a particularly good roosting spot, they will call out to invite the locals over. It’s a cosy arrangement, with males and females all huddling tightly together to stay warm – the record number of individuals found in one nest box is 63! Once the spring returns, this neighbourly spell is broken and the males return to their feisty, competitive natures, building several nests each so that the females may choose their favourites. Wrens are insectivores and it can be pretty difficult to find insects over the winter so sprinkling mealworms on the ground in your garden can really help their chances.

“I suppose it is unusual to find an Olympian working as a trainer at a village leisure centre...
Personal Training Worth its
Weight in Gold Olympian Jade Lally on Personal Training at The Bridge Jade Lally has good reason to have mixed feelings about the opening of The Bridge. As a personal trainer for Places Leisure, the 31-year-old can benefit from an impressive range of new equipment in a spacious, modern facility. However, as a Commonwealth bronze medallist, Olympian and English record holder for the discus, Jade is saddened by the loss of The Tube, an indoor facility that formed part of the old leisure centre. “The Bridge is great, although from a fitness perspective it’s not necessarily made my job easier, as some people find the new gym quite intimidating. The Tube was a big selling point too, as it felt like a private gym. People could use the weights in a spacious, quiet location.” “The Bridge is far bigger and better-equipped than the old gym, but everything is now confined to one large room and you lose that privacy. So, with some clients, it’s a matter of building confidence gradually in a different environment.” “It’s not as easy for me to train either as I used The Tube regularly. I can still use the discus facilities outside, but in bad weather, it’s more beneficial to use the indoor track at Sutton.”
Low Profile Jade has been a personal trainer at Broadbridge Heath for 10 years. During that time, she has won the British Championships seven times, represented Great Britain at The Olympic Games, World Championships and European Championships and won bronze at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. She has seen many friends and colleagues move on to private gyms or health clubs, but Jade is happy to stay. “I've always enjoyed my time here and Places Leisure has always been very supportive of my athletics career. I suppose it is unusual to find an Olympian working as a trainer at a village leisure centre, but I tend not to mention it to people unless they ask. “I’ve never been the best at marketing myself and find even talking about it cringe-worthy! Sometimes, my clients will talk to others about it, which is great, or people will see me in my training gear and ask about it, but I tend not to just focus on fitness.”

Breaking Habits Jade has developed her own programme for clients, called ‘Breaking Habits.’ This includes weights, exercise and gym work as well as a balanced diet. “In theory, losing weight comes down to a simple equation. You need to burn more than you're putting in! For some reason, people still choose fad diets that don’t work, so over the years I’ve evolved Breaking Habits to help people continue with a healthy lifestyle even after the training sessions. It's not always easy, but it is sustainable.” “Sessions may include ‘free weight’ training in the gym, as well as hip training, bodyweight exercises and gymnastics. There’s little cardiovascular machine work as it's not a good use of time.” “I’m very experienced when it comes to weight training, which is an area most people don’t fully understand. They watch videos on YouTube with people presenting opinions as facts, and get it wrong as a result. But by showing them the right way, they can continue to progress even when I’m away.” Jade provides personal training sessions for Places Leisure at The Bridge
Discus Dreams And Jade is often away training. This month, she heads off on a self-funded trip to Australia as she prepares for the World Championships in Qatar. “I am currently not funded by British Athletics, so I need to work hard to raise the money to train and compete. I’m 31 now and seen as being at the end of my career. But whilst that’s true of many athletic disciplines, it’s not the case for discus. Last year, a French athlete won bronze at the age of 38, so I’m still positive.” “This has been a disappointing season, being the first time since 2011 that I haven’t thrown 60m. I went to the Commonwealth and European Championships and won the British title, so there were positives, but I’ll be hoping for better next season. My target is to make the World Championships and that’s something I believe I can do.” http://jadelally.com You can book personal fitness sessions at The Bridge on (01403) 211311.
T H E R E T I R E ME N T R E VO L U T I O N Ever-increasing life expectancy means larger retirement pots are now needed. This means the age-old practice of stopping work at 65 is being replaced by phased retirement; many are reducing hours or responsibility, but extending their working lives by several more years, bringing with it a host of new financial considerations. So, for the generation now contemplating retirement, the trick is to plan ahead so that pension provision meets both your financial needs and wider hopes for personal fulfilment.
