The July 2019 cover features Cassius Morgan, 8, on the cello at Horsham Performers Platform (HPP). We’ve wanted to cover the HPP for several years, but finally did so for the event’s 10th anniversary. Toby pictured Cassius early on a Saturday morning, as the Pennthorpe School pupil prepared to perform for an djudicator at St John’s Church, Broadbridge Heath. Cassius played Hot Cross Buns (arranged by his cello tutor, Kay Tucker) and Under Arrest. Other contenders for the cover included Wendy Yates, who runs Clay ‘n’ Glaze, and Sophie Latter with her Himalayan singing bowls.

Chris was a keen photographer and worked closely with Ben when he was editor of The Resident newspaper. Every Saturday, Chris would take photos of a West Sussex Football League clash, giving great coverage to teams in the lower leagues. His images of the fire at Spofforth’s provided The Resident with one of its biggest scoops. Chris also took photos on several occasions for AAH. He was a lovely bloke and will be great missed.

Notes from the Editor

Shouldn’t we know about John Humpherson? On Sunday 9 June, I found myself in a field in Coolham, less than a mile from a farm where I spent much of my childhood. Growing up, I had never known that the field had once been used by Spitfire and Mustang fighter planes. Coolham Airfield was only operational for a couple of months, yet 15 men stationed there lost their lives. A plaque was made by Shipley Men’s Shed to coincide with the 75th anniversary of D-Day, which is what Coolham Advanced Landing Ground (ALG) was built for. The plaque was unveiled next to the war memorial, which we’re pictured with above. The plaque focuses on those 15 lost men, with a picture of each of them along with an account of how they died. I was pleased to see this, as I feel the services we have to remember our fallen are sometimes guilty of being too generic. As a parent of a Scout, I occasionally hear how wonderful it is to see youngsters involved in Remembrance services. But often, children are not truly engaged. They’ve been dragged out of bed on a Sunday morning and threatened with a computer ban unless they attend. My son has been a flag bearer at Shipley Church in the past. He bowed his head for prayers, stood for

hymns he didn’t know and heard of the courage of a collective of people older than his greatgrandad. But he learned nothing about what really happened. This occurs across the UK. News coverage of a flag fluttering in the wind, presenters giving their best sombre expression. There’s “outrage” when someone appears on television - or even plays a football match without wearing a poppy. I read an article by Janet Street-Porter for The Independent (published Nov 2017), written after research suggested that many young people felt ‘compelled’ to wear one. Street-Porter also wrote that ‘presenters are issued with a diktat that poppies must be worn on screen at all times.’ Shouldn’t a poppy be worn with pride, not because of a diktat? As someone who attends a remembrance service each year, I don’t ask for sweeping changes. I just feel that we should use the real stories of local people to engage future generations, particularly in years between the ‘big’ anniversaries. Stories that trigger genuine emotion and inspire them. Because it’s a bit sad that people might know that TV presenter Holly Willoughby went to Collyer’s and that Liam Gallagher from Oasis once had

a pint in The Crown, yet they’ve never heard of John Humpherson... John was a fighter pilot and a Horsham hero. In May 1940, he destroyed two German planes, but his defining moment came in the Battle of Britain. Flying from Biggin Hill, John destroyed four German planes, probably five, and was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross. Tragically, a year later, he died as a passenger on a non-operational flight, at the age of 24. He at least had time to achieve notoriety, unlike Harry Jones, Horsham’s first casualty of the Second World War. Harry was school captain at Victory Road and known as a fine athlete, winning the High Jump at the Sussex County School Championships. He always wanted to join the Royal Navy and signed up for training at the age of 16. Harry was only a Boy 1st Class when he served on HMS Royal Oak, which was torpedoed by the Germans and sunk. His body was never found. There are hundreds of stories like these. So, I hope others follow the example of Coolham and make the effort to bring local history to life. Our country’s most defining moments need not be reduced to mandatory monotony.

A new town centre attraction highlights the remarkable art collection of Horsham Museum & Art Gallery. Inspired by the rhododendron plant, sculptor Tim Ward of Circling the Square and fabricators Pleshey Forge have created a distinctive feature, providing visitors to the Carfax with an opportunity to see watercolours. The museum has built up a strong art collection in recent years and this new feature shows off elements of different paintings. The photographic reproductions (by Toby Phillips) in the ‘en plein air art gallery’ can be changed to focus on different exhibitions at the Museum. www.horshammuseum.org

The inaugural Feria de Horsham was held on Sunday 9 June, with an enthusiastic audience enjoying Spanish music, dancing and street food in the town. Organised by Horsham District Council with Feria de Londres, the show came down from London’s South Bank. Local business, Vacalola, ran children’s craft activities, with a caricaturist and dress-up photo booth adding to the fun. The Feria was the fourth and final of Horsham’s spring events, billed as Horsham - Life’s a Beach, in support of the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019.

It was supported by businesses including The Horsham Cellar, The Crown (below) and The Big Plant Nursery of Ashington.

Gareth Jones, well-known in Horsham as the owner of The Beer Essentials in East Street, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday 12 June, aged 56, following an illness. Gareth was the brewery shop manager at King & Barnes for nearly 13 years before opening his own shop. For his 40th birthday, he organised a small event at the Old Town Hall and that evolved to become the annual Horsham Beer Festival, attracting leading independent breweries

from across the country. Speaking to AAH in 2015, Gareth said: “Compared to when my shop opened, I see many more craft beers on the pumps in local pubs, as that’s what drinkers demand. The beers maintain traditions of what ale drinking is all about and that has brought about a reduction in binge drinking, which is good news." Gareth leaves wife Cheryl and sons Owen, Samuel and Edward. A funeral service was due to take place on Thursday 4 July.

Sha Wylie closed the first open mic night at The Anchor

Horsham-based comedian Stella Wright

Joshua Mays was a popular act at the first Stand-Up Horsham

The inaugural Stand-Up Horsham comedy night at The Anchor Hotel was a resounding success.

Compére and organiser P.J Aldred Below: Patrick Casey, South Coast Comedian of the Year finalist

An audience of 50 people filled the upstairs area on 5 June, creating a friendly, encouraging atmosphere that proved conducive to good comedy. Compéred by P.J Aldred, co-owner of Crates Local, the night saw 11 comedians perform, ranging from those very new to stand-up to seasoned circuit veterans. Comedians included Ben Harrington (who has performed at Edinburgh Fringe Festival) John Rands (Sussex-born writer whose work has been on Radio 4 Extra), Pippi Chartres (a Horsham local turned Londoner) Jade Gebbie (Brighton-based comic who based her routine around a passion for dogs) Simon Harriyott )newcomer to stand-up comedy) Stella Wright (Horsham-based) and Daniel Daly (a story-telling comedian). Patrick Casey, a finalist in the 2018 South Coast Comedian of the Year competition, won over the audience with digs at Audi drivers, while the evening’s final performer, 62-year-old Sha Wylie, surprised with a dead-pan delivery and natural charm. But if anyone stole the show, it was 23-year-old Crawley-born comedian Joshua Mays, who found the

crowd were receptive to his jokes about the demise of the traditional ‘flasher’. P.J said: “We’re thrilled that the opening night went so well. The town has a growing comedy scene with venues including The Rec Rooms, Holbrook Club, Christ’s Hospital and Barnstormers at The Capitol all supporting stand-up. It was Barnstormers host Kevin Precious who inspired us to launch our own open mic night after a comedy workshop, and Kevin is now our patron.” “We hope the evening will encourage others to try stand-up and eventually prove to be a stepping stone for some. We have been inundated with comedians wanting to perform and the line-up for July is full. There is clearly a demand for funny people to strut their stuff in Horsham.” Stand-Up Horsham is held on the first Wednesday of every month at the Anchor Hotel, Market Square. It's free to attend, but a donation is appreciated. The evening is organised in association with Andromeda Talent and Manic Mundays. Comics can request a slot through the ‘StandUpHorsham’ Facebook page.

The event included motorcycle competitions including best custom, street, classic, rat and trike, alongside music by Space Dog Trio and Juxta. Organiser Nick Paxton said: “The idea originally came about as I knew I couldn’t be the only biker who was also a musician!

People liked the idea, so we approached Richard Kent at The Shelley Arms and he’s now been supporting us for a decade. It’s a great family day out, with lots of children enjoying the bikes and voting for Best in Show, which this year went to a beautiful Harley Davidson Chopper. Musos on Bikes has become like a bike club without actually being one!”

BOTANICA

REVIEW: SOUTH LODGE HOTEL SPA’S NEW RESTAURANT I feel out of place turning up at South Lodge Hotel in my unmarked white van. The gleaming scarlet Ferrari parked outside doesn’t help. I follow the path to the hotel’s new health spa, which only opened a few months ago. It’s reported to have cost £15 million. Membership isn’t cheap. We’re talking the kind of figures you can’t quite bring yourself to say aloud. One of its more remarkable features is a sloped grass roof. How do they go about cutting it? Does the gardener drag a mower up a ladder? Or do they allow it to grow wild? I make a mental note to ask, but forget. Heritage roasted carrots (£6.50)

Inside, a few of the spa members are milling about in robes, having enjoyed a

treatment, or perhaps a swim. But, I remind myself, Botanica isn’t solely for members. It’s open to everyone. A large restaurant with a bustling, open-view kitchen needs bums on seats, after all. But is it a place where all visitors will feel welcome? As a non-member, would I feel comfortable dining there? Well, the staff are wearing denim aprons. That helps. They chat to diners while going about their business. It all seems very casual... Taking a seat, I’m handed a menu, which comes with a weather forecast for the day. ‘Sunny intervals, cloudy at times’. As we were in one of the sunny intervals, I order an orange, carrot, ginger and pink grapefruit juice (£4.50). It’s described as an “invigorating and

nourishing tonic for the stomach, nervous system, endocrine and immune system.” In which case, £4.50 feels like a bargain! I continue browsing the drinks menu. There’s a graphic showing the distance to some of Botanica’s suppliers. The likes of Cabin Pressure Spirits in Horsham and Foxhole Spirits in Bolney are included, although Silly Moo Cider in Cowfold scoops the prize for being closest. I ask our friendly server, Hope, to request that the chefs select our dishes. “Colourful dishes are best for photos!” Meanwhile, another diner, intrigued by the equipment being erected so that Toby can capture the full splendour of the food, approaches our table. She’s a regular and recommends the chips. “They don’t look that great as they’re all brown and different sizes. But they taste amazing!”

Grilled sardines with Nutbourne cherry tomatoes (£9.50)

Toby hasn’t even finished setting up his lights when our starters, or ‘small plates’ arrive impressively promptly. We loved the coppa sarda (Sardinian salami) with grilled figs, Sussex Slipcote (a cheese from High Weald Dairy) and shaved fennel (£11). There was also an interesting trio of plant-based dishes: Heritage roasted carrots with Trenchmore wheat berries, dukkah and nectarine (£6.50), Spice roasted cauliflower

with mung beans, golden sultanas and seeds with tarragon tzatziki (£6) and grilled tender stem broccoli, wild nettle gremolata sunflower butter (£7). The chef - perhaps having noticed five clean plates return from our table - asked us for feedback. He then told us that many dishes are made without cooking oil, presenting the kitchen with the challenge of generating flavour more creatively. It may be that these dishes will be refined with time, but already Botanica is demonstrating its commitment to

create a varied gluten-free, plant-based, or vegetarian menu. As you’d expect, given its name... My personal pick of the small plates was the grilled sardines with Nutbourne cherry tomatoes, coriander and grilled seeded sourdough (£9.50). The dense, rich flavour of the fish went beautifully with the sweetness of the fruit. Our discussion turned to Botanica’s layout. Drawing inspiration from The Pass (the fine

dining restaurant within the hotel), guests can watch the chefs in action. But this isn’t the dominant feature of Botanica. There’s a casual vibrancy to the place. Perhaps that’s down to the lighting, or décor, or the barbers in the corner. Perhaps it’s down to Botanica’s multi-functions as a restaurant, bar and café. Perhaps it’s the roof terrace on the other side of the window. Quite in vogue, are roof terraces. But this one is special. Not many offer a view of the South Downs as well as a natural outdoor swimming pool. Although few are brave enough to swim in it...

wasted opportunity Our server brought us our mains, called ‘large plates’ here. We had to ask Hope to repeat the description of one of the dishes. “Did you say the burgers are made from leftover beetroot and carrot pulp?” That is indeed the case. It’s made with the pulp of the fruit juices. But the ‘wasted’ burger and chips (£16) is more appealing than its description. And the diner who confessed a love of the chips was correct. Weird yet yummy. The Cornish hake with broccoli root puree and botanical sunflower salsa verde (£16) was one of five gluten-free ‘large plates’ on the menu. Which is impressive, as

there are only six in total. The salsa verde had lovely colour and texture and worked well with the tender fish, although the dish could perhaps benefit from an added component, just to moisten the pallet a fraction. A glass of Cote de Gascogne Blanc cuvee marine (£8, 175ml) helped.

‘Wasted’ burger and chips (£16)

The chargrilled bavette steak, rocket salad and Twineham Grange (£20) was superb. Not only is it great to see Botanica recognising the quality of another excellent local producer in Bookham Harrison Farms of Rudgwick (makers of Twineham Grange cheese) but serving good-sized portions too, with five divine cuts of underbelly. We finished off with two desserts. A rich and naughty chocolate tart with thyme caramel and orange blossom gelato (£9.50) as well as pistachio iced parfait with some ludicrously moreish macerated wonky strawberries and elderflower (£8.50).

FACING THE MU 10 YEARS OF HORSHAM PERFORMERS PLATFORM For ten years, Horsham Performers Platform (HPP) has offered the chance for singers and musicians to showcase their talents.

Ludo Steiner performs on the cello

It has evolved to become a two-week long festival catering for all, from novices to seasoned performers, culminating in a celebration concert of outstanding musicians. Rather than handing out placings or prizes, experienced adjudicators mark each performance, ranging from Fair, Moderate and Merit to Commended, Distinction and Outstanding. Rachel Ellis, Co-Chair of HPP, said: “One of the distinguishing features of the Horsham Performers Platform is that it's non-competitive. Many festivals hand out awards but we find

that teachers, participants and their parents prefer our format, as there’s no added pressure. Music isn't a sport. One performance shouldn’t be measured against another. For those who learn an instrument, music is its own reward.”

THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT HPP blossomed from an idea by three local musicians. Rachel Ellis (violin), Kay Tucker (cello) and Rosemary Hensor (piano) performed as a trio. They also taught music individually and every year would come together so that their students could perform. This event grew steadily and they felt that other music tutors in the Horsham area should also be involved,

“You can see how delighted the young players are to receive a round of applause.”

presenting more young players with the opportunity to perform. So, the first HPP Festival was held at St John’s Church, Broadbridge Heath in 2010. Rosemary said: “Performing in public is a great confidence builder. All of us need to stand up and perform at various times in our life, be it a job interview, a wedding speech or a presentation at work. It is nerve-wracking if you’re not used to it.” “Performing in front of others at an early age helps you to gain confidence and when someone gives you positive feedback remarking how well you've done or how brave you are to have tried - it can only help you improve. The confidence people gain from performing here makes them better musicians and impacts other aspects of life.”

“For many youngsters, the only time they play is when they're approaching a music exam and it’s alien to them, as they receive no feedback, as adjudicators sit there writing. Here, you can see on their faces how delighted they are to receive a round of applause for their performance. It teaches children that they can entertain, as music is a performing art.”

ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS Some musicians in this year’s HPP line-up may go on to achieve great things in music. They wouldn’t be the first and can take inspiration from the likes of Laura van der Heijden (BBC Young Musician of the Year 2012) and saxophonist Jess Gillam, who closed the 2018 BBC Proms in style. Rachel said: “I remember a boy called Lawrence Schofield coming through the festival. He was a beginner on the baritone in the brass section, but stood up and gave a wonderful performance. He absolutely blew us away and received an ‘Outstanding’ from the adjudicator, which is rare for someone so young.” “Lawrence has recently been appointed the principal trombone in the National Youth Orchestra and it's been nice for us all to see his journey, as he was a regular at HPP. He’s also a skilled arranger and a brass ensemble played one of his pieces at this year’s festival.”

“A boy sang Panis Angelica before a girl performed a song from Matilda.” WALTZ & MATILDA Having started predominantly with strings and piano, HPP’s repertoire expanded. The woodwind and brass sections separated as the number of performances increased, with trombones, baritones and French horns now held on one day and woodwind on another. The variety has increased too. There are opportunities for pre-grade 1 performers, as well as pupils of Kay’s Stringbabies classes for cello and violin. Duets allow teachers to perform with pupils, while occasional special performances have included a saxophone quartet.

Whilst the Horsham District is well represented, HPP attracts people from much further afield. Keen musicians play at lots of festivals to gain experience and pick up advise from experienced adjudicators. At this year’s HPP, they included Graeme Humphrey (who taught piano at Royal Academy of Music for 36 years), soprano Jane Wilkinson (Head of Singing at Chelsea Academy), Jena Pang (who studied Music at St Peter’s College, Oxford), Benjamin Costello (Artistic Director of Thames Concerts) and Liz Childs (Director of the Bedfordshire Woodwind Academy). Kay said: “We have seen a wider variety of music being performed too, from classical to contemporary. That’s especially the case with vocal performances. Yesterday, we heard a young boy singing an operatic song, Panis Angelica, before a girl sung a song from Matilda. Our adjudicators are very experienced and are at ease with classical, jazz, musical theatre or contemporary pop music. We see everything here and occasionally welcome families performing together.”

LEITH HILL EVENT Throughout its lifespan, HPP has been held at St John's Church in Broadbridge Heath, which the three founders attend. Rachel's late husband, Hugo Ellis,

ran a Space Arts Project at the church, recognising not only the hall’s fine acoustics but also the intimate setting which puts musicians at ease. Hugo is remembered by a selfaccompanied song category named in his honour. “One of the reasons we chose St John’s was because of the community here,” says Kay. “We have a devoted group working behind-the-scenes, providing meals for adjudicators, serving tea and coffee, manning front of house, helping with fundraising, year after year. We’ve also benefitted hugely from the input of other teachers, who have introduced new elements to the festival and who continually provide us with feedback.” “A more recent element to HPP is that we take a selection of performers to Leith Hill Place, the childhood home of Ralph Vaughan Williams, to experience what it feels like to play in a prestigious venue. We’re always looking at how we can improve and encourage more people to enjoy performing, as playing music at any level is richly rewarding.” WORDS: BEN MORRIS PHOTOS: TOBY PHILLIPS For more information visit www.horsham-performersplatform.co.uk

COOLHAM HEROES NEW PLAQUE TELLS STORY OF 15 WHO PERISHED

A new plaque commemorates the men who gave their life whilst serving at Coolham Airfield in World War Two. For decades, there was little sign of what happened during the short yet action-packed existence of Coolham Advanced Landing Ground (ALG), built to support the D-Day landings. Yet 15 men (eight Polish, six British and one Canadian) lost their lives whilst serving in Coolham. In 1994, during a commemorative event and veteran’s reunion, oak trees were planted to honour those who fell. Now, to mark 75 years since D-Day, the greatest coastal invasion in history, a plaque has been created. It was designed and built by volunteers at Shipley Men’s Shed, highlighting the airfield’s importance for future generations. Unveiled by Cllr Kate Rowbottom, Chairman of Horsham District Council on Sunday 9 June, the plaque includes photographs of the men who died, as well as a diagram of the layout of Coolham ALG.

Here, we look at the history of Coolham ALG. We’re extremely grateful to Richard Harris of Shipley Men’s Shed for supplying information on the plaque, as well as Paul Hamlin, who has written a fascinating book on Coolham ALG and the men who served there, which is available at The Selsey Arms.

The new plaque was unveiled to commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day. (Photo: www.countrymanphotography.com

Some 200 people attended, with many taking the opportunity to enjoy the two-mile walk around the airfield before gathering at The Selsey Arms, where The Lat Post was played before a silence at the memorial. Visitors on the day included the grandsons of Adam Sworniowski, who died while bombing enemy positions after taking off from Coolham in 1944. His P51 Mustang plane was hit by flak, but after bailing out between Bayeux and Caen, he was shot by a German tank crew while attempting to escape.

Preparing for D-Day Coolham was one of seven Advanced Landing Grounds constructed as the Allied Forces prepared to land in German-occupied France on 6 June 1944. These temporary airfields were designed to support fighter aircraft, but finding ideal locations was not easy. They needed to be close to the Channel, offer level ground over a large area, and be well away from dense habitation. Ideal sites were identified at Bognor, Chailey, Appledram, Deanland, Funtington, Selsey and Coolham.

August 1943: 156 personnel from the Airfield Construction Squadron (ACS) started work at Coolham. It took ten months to complete the work. Two metal-strip runways were laid, along with aircraft dispersal hard standings. The control tower was a moveable caravan. Hangers were also erected, along with an armoury, defence post and a fuel installation for 24,000 gallons. Virtually all the airmen lived and ate in tents, but would relax by visiting the pub. 15 February 1944: The first aircraft to land at Coolham was a shot-up American Marauder Bomber named Flounder Gus. It was named after a Great Dane belonging to the pilot, Captain Richard Lightfine, who was only 21 at the time. Flounder Gus was returning from a bombing mission in Cherbourg when its right engine was hit by shell fire. The remaining engine cut-out over Coolham and the plane lost control, skidded on the ground and hit an oak tree. Miraculously, the crew of five survived, but Sgt Charles Gordon, a member of the ACS, was killed when a piece of the propeller detached. Captain Lightfine later wrote: “The Germans were extremely good gunners and most accurate. One engine was knocked out, the other spewing oil like mad, so we started back to England. and the crew discussed options of bailing out or crash landing. We opted for the crash landing. “We spied a small grass airstrip, so we came in. We circled the place and could see personnel on the ground, watching us. I didn’t realise ours was the first aircraft to land there. “Just before we touched down, probably 100 feet off the ground, the other engine conked out. There was a tremendous yaw to the left and you could see them all running like hell. We did our best to straighten it out, pulled up the landing gear and slid

along the ground, hitting a tree with the left wing. Unfortunately, a portion of it killed one of the young men on the ground. “The plane was demolished, but thank goodness it didn’t catch alight. But the tail section of the plane flew over a hedgerow at the end of the field and ended in a cottage yard. In typical British fashion, out walked a lady. There’s the end of the fuselage lying there with a young American airman next to it and she said, ‘Would you like a cup of tea?’”

Flight Lieutenant Allan John Hancock of 129 (Mysore) Squadron. Killed in action on 22 June 1944. (Photo courtesy of Paul Hamlin)

Flying Officer Wladyslaw Jan Szajda of 306 Polish Squadron died in a flying accident on 4 April 1944. (Photo courtesy of Paul Hamlin)

Sgt Gordon, aged 45, was buried in Stirling, Scotland. His mother contacted the pilot to express her understanding of the accident. 1 April 1944: The airfield became fully operational by 133 Wing, 84 Group, Second Tactical Air Force. The first two Polish Air Force squadrons arrived (306 Torunski and 315 Deblinski). Two days later 129 (Mysore) RAF Squadron arrived in Spitfires, but within days began training in P51 Mustang fighter bombers. Charlton ‘Wag’ Haw was squadron leader of 129 (Mysore). He was an outstanding pilot, having flown in the Battle of Britain and in Arctic Russia with 81 Squadron, forming part of 151 Wing. There, he claimed three Messerschmitt Bf109's, becoming known as the hero of Murmansk. He was awarded the Order of Lenin, Russia's highest order. Wag survived four tours of operations and died aged 73. 21 April 1944: Sgt Kazimierz Osieleniec of 306 Squadron died flying a Mustang FB100 during training at Coolham. Flying Officer George Frederic Pyle of 129 (Mysore) squadron recalled: “The Polish Mustang approached the (S/N) runway from over the lake. I heard his throttle being slammed open and saw it rearing into the air from a cloud of dust to abort the landing and try again. As it staggered away, gaining speed and altitude, I saw his starboard undercarriage and flap had disappeared. The poor chap had landed short and although he cleared the lake, sadly struck the stump of one of the trees that had been felled to clear the final approach. The undercarriage leg and wheel had

Charlton ‘Wag’ Haw (Photo courtesy of Richard Harris)

been ripped off and carried the flap with it. With the loss of lift on the starboard wing and the extended flap still down on the other, the pilot was quite unable to hold it and, as if in slow motion, we all watched as the aircraft half rolled and crashed, inverted at the other end of the runway.” 26 April 1944: Coolham ALG’s first mission takes place, over France. Each Mustang carries two 500lb bombs. Throughout May, the fighters continually escorted on major bomber raids. 6 June 1944: D-Day: All three squadrons of 133 Wing provided close escort to airborne British forces landing in the Eastern beachhead. 7 June 1944: Coolham’s “most hectic and momentous day”. 133 Wing flew four Ramrod missions, commencing at 6am and finishing at 9.37pm, resulting in the successful bombing of many targets and the destruction of 16 enemy aircraft, three possible aircraft and two damaged. 17 June 1944: Skip (Stanley) Payne lost his life while taking off in a Mustang, colliding with trees near the Old House . Flying Officer Mike Humphries recalled:

HEROIC HORBA One of the most remarkable stories from Coolham ALG is that of Polish Squadron Leader Eugeniusz Horbaczewski. On 22 June 1944, whilst on a mission over occupied France, ‘Horba’ rescued fellow pilot Tamowiecz from behind enemy lines, when his aircraft was brought down in a muddy field near Cherbourg. After landing in a nearby field and borrowing a jeep to reach the wrecked plane, Horbaczewski pulled his injured colleague from the wreckage and both returned to Coolham in the squadron leader's single-seater Mustang. Tragically, Horbaczewski was killed in action only two months later in Beauvais, following action in which he was credited with the destruction of three enemy FW190's. During the war, he’d accounted for 16 aircraft. This ranks him fourth among all Polish pilots’ victories. In 1992, Michael Tanner of Pulborough contacted the County Times after reading about Paul Hamlin’s research into Coolham ALG. Born Mikhal Garbarz, he had served with 306 Squadron during the war and eventually settled in Sussex, changing his name to Tanner. He said: “When the Squadron came back, we counted them in, but two were missing. We heard that Horbaczewski had picked up Tamowiecz after a crash and I thought, ‘How is that possible?’

“Skip’s plane left the air strip and started to sink towards the trees beyond the pond. I saw him hit them. I remember running as fast as I could, up the footpath beside the pond, round the house and along the hedgerow towards the crash. I could see Payne’s head resting forward against the instrument panel, motionless. There was a small explosion from the engine compartment and flames engulfed the front half of the plane, obscuring the cockpit entirely. The heat was intense; it drove me back, leaving me in horror as I watched helplessly. Skip is buried at Hills Cemetery in Horsham. 22 June 1944: 133 Wing flew missions, but on the same day transferred from Coolham to RAF Holmley South in the New Forest. While stationed at Coolham, 133 Wing lost 21 P-51 Mustangs in action and three in non-operational or familiarisation flying. During the 57 days, they destroyed 28 enemy aircraft in combat. 30 June 1944: 135 wing of 84 Group transferred to Coolham

from Selsey. Five days later, they transferred to Funtington ALG. After this, Coolham was a fully-maintained airfield but did not see further operational use. 19 January 1945: American B-24J Liberator Bomber Mad Madeleine made an emergency landing. It is the last documented wartime landing at Coolham and there was only one RAF Corporal and no rescue services there. Returning from a bombing mission over Dresden, the pilot of Mad Madeleine was running out of fuel and desperately looking for somewhere to land. He saw the non-operational Coolham ALG. There was a crosswind and as the plane touched down, it veered off runway and into mud. Stuck fast in deep clay, it took several days to lighten the plane by removing fuel, armaments and ammunition. Eventually, with the help of heavy lifting gear, the plane was hauled from the mud. It took off successfully on 26 January, although the undercarriage clipped a boundary hedge on the way!

9 September 1945: There was an undocumented landing by a Polish pilot flying a Harvard trainer who had unfinished business to complete in Horsham. Once he’d done his shopping, he flew back to RAF Coltishall! A short time later, the land was reinstated back to Agricultural use.

Amazing Memories For those who lived to see such times, it was an unforgettable experience. In an information boards around the airfield, Bob Lomas shares his recollections: “A few days after D-Day, I cycled from Sullington to Coolham ALG with other local boys to watch the comings and goings. The sight was spectacular and the noise and smells overwhelming. We sat on a fence as the hours melted away. One of the boys, an evacuee from London, was supposed to be looking after us. We were late home, so he got it in the neck! That boy never completely escaped from World War Two. His name was Bill Pertwee (Dad’s Army).

Today, one can easily drive past this historic site, not knowing it was a part of a critical time in our nation’s history. A place where the roar of Rolls Royce Merlin engines in the Spitfires and Mustangs overhead would be deafening. A place where 700 personnel, including 174 pilots from seven fighter squadrons, were based. Some would never return home. The memorial outside the Selsey Arms and on the new plaque at the airfield commemorates the brave fighter pilots who took to the skies to ensure our continued freedom and liberation of the oppressed countries of Europe. If you can, do enjoy the peaceful walk around the green fields of Coolham and remember their sacrifice.

Cllr Kate Rowbottom, Richard Harris of Shipley Men’s Shed and Cllr Gordon Lindsay.

WORDS: BEN MORRIS Thanks to Richard Harris and Paul Hamlin for their incredible research. At AAH, we have merely edited their words. Also to Malcolm Green at countrymanphotography.com for images from the ceremony on Sunday 9 July.

Come rain or shine the X-line series can easily handle wet and rainy conditions, while the electric cutting height adjustment enables you to adjust the length of your grass with a simple push of a button on the keypad, or remotely with the Husqvarna Automower® Connect smartphone app.

The onboard GPS system creates a map of the garden, including where the boundary and guide wires are installed. Step inside Cobblestone Walk in Steyning for a treasure trove of independent businesses...

Sophie Latter sells Himalayan singing bowls and Buddha statues

Visitors could easily miss the shopping arcade in the heart of Steyning’s High Street. But those who do venture inside Cobblestone Walk are treated to fascinating shops full of character. The 16th century tea house ensures steady footfall, but some are guilty of skimming around, not taking the time to appreciate the fine items on display.

You can meet artists, knitters, upholsterers, therapists and much more besides. Men can visit the barbers whilst women enjoy a treatment at Emma’s Nails and Beauty. There’s hand-made jewellery at Indulgence, stained glass windows at Traditional Glass, environmentally-friendly food and vitamins at Green and Healthy, unique ladies fashion at Bamboo and quirky crafts at Flicker-Rose. There’s even someone selling Himalayan singing bowls! Long ago, the village bakery was on the site. It closed in 1963 and was nearly developed into a supermarket, but Wendy Tipler stepped in and established a Bed and Breakfast business. Over the years, retail elements evolved, with Cobblestone Walk attracting

small businesses. Back in 2011, Eddie Woodward was among them, selling bric-a-brac in the Walk. He then seized an opportunity to take on the derelict cottage in the centre and transformed it into an awardwinning tea house. Then, in 2015, Eddie took over the running of Cobblestone Walk. It has gone from strength to strength ever since. Eddie said: “Cobblestone gives people an opportunity to grow their own business. Even if you have the best product in the world, you can’t jump straight on to the High Street. We have affordable rents that give people a chance as sadly, very few towns and villages cater for this. If you do well, you can move on. We’re extremely proud of shops like Palace of Pooch and Sakala that have progressed from here to Steyning High Street.” “We also have shop owners at the other end of the scale, perhaps in retirement, who want to slow down and run a small business in a friendly place. It’s a real melting pot of people and businesses!” AAH went to meet a few of the independent businesses…

Smiffy Bears Jackie Smith (Owner) “I’ve been in Cobblestone for six years, which is a long time in today's climate. Initially I was in a small hut at the back, but three years ago I moved closer to the tea rooms, which has made a big difference! I restore antique Teddy bears and sell bears by five of the leading brands in the world; Steiff, Hermann and Clemens from Germany, and Merrythought and Charlie Bears from the UK. The modern bears are of great quality and make a perfect gift. Teddy specialists are very rare now and professional restorers are hard to come by, so I’m always busy. I’m part of a worldwide network of people ensuring that Teddy bear restoration is both available and affordable, otherwise the history of Teddies will be forgotten. Certain types of bears do hold great value. The name ‘Teddy’

Award Winning Rural Dining Pub “There are always Teddies in the bear hospital, waiting to be treated.” comes from President Roosevelt, who refused to shoot a bear while on a hunt in 1898. Steiff made the first Teddy bear in Germany, although the term was coined in America. I’ve seen some rare and wonderful bears over the years. One customer brought in a 1908 white Steiff which was very exciting for me. However, I love them all and there are always Teddies in the bear hospital, waiting to be treated!” www.smiffybears.com

“Whilst travelling, I met a Dutch couple in India. They ran a business in Holland selling Buddha statues and Himalayan singing bowls. We became friends and they kindly passed on the business to me 15 years ago. I sold online before opening the shop in Cobblestone Walk four years ago. Since then, I’ve taken on a second unit. I’m careful to buy authentic singing bowls, not one massproduced for tourists. Each village in the Himalayan mountains makes its own kind of singing bowl and they all bear the maker’s mark. Some are hand-hammered using methods dating back 5,000 years. Casted bowls have smooth edges and a different pitch, whilst aluminium bowls create a loud, bold resonance. I also sell modern bowls made or quartz, giving a crisp sound. Each one sounds different and there are countless colours and designs. Some have simple lines

and patterns, whilst others depict elephants or even the Buddhist Goddess of Compassion.

The bowls are predominantly used for meditative purposes. People listen to the harmonics and feel the vibrations of the bowl to find one that resonates for them. They focus your mind and can help with many things, from relieving stress to aiding sleep. Prices range from £30, which includes a choice of cushion and beater, to huge bowls shaped by feet. Some involve up to 90 hours of labour! Children love the shop, of course. I have one bowl that has been sacrificed so that they can try it out. It’s been dropped hundreds of times over the years!” https://singinghimalaya.com

Something Special Joyce Pinkus (Owner) “I knit clothes and garments for babies and children up to the age of two. Regulars sometimes ask me to make clothes for older children, ones I used to knit for when they were babies, and I don’t mind as it’s nice to see them grow! I'm 79-years-old and long retired, but this is a way of continuing to do what I enjoy. Because we’re a small business, I sell clothes at reasonable prices. As well as making them myself, I have a

selection of other items, by mainly British designers. But it’s the knitted items that sell the quickest. My husband sells wool and sewing essentials in another shop in Cobblestone Walk. It means we can stay close without seeing each other all the time. There’s a nice atmosphere here, although business goes up and down. Not everyone who comes here succeeds, but some have progressed on to the High Street, which proves this can be a stepping stone.” Facebook: Baby Boutique Something Special

Importance of Home to Buy Scheme revealed

In the eyes of many industry commentators and members of the opposition, the Help to Buy scheme sits somewhere between being the Government’s greatest achievement within the housing market, and a potential reason why many housebuilders and the new build sector could crumble like a house of cards in the future. I’m focusing on the more dramatic end of the opinion spectrum here and with the end of the scheme inching ever closer, I expect it to generate even more views and headlines before it’s gradually phased out. The latest figures from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government showed that: • Over the period since the launch of the Help to Buy: Equity Loan scheme (1 April 2013 to 31 December 2018), 210,964 properties were bought with an equity loan. • Most of the home purchases in the Help to Buy: Equity Loan scheme were made by first-time buyers, accounting for 171,053 (81%) of total purchases. • The mean purchase price of a property bought under the scheme was £258,223, with buyers using a mean equity loan of £55,498. These figures highlight how invaluable this initiative has been for many homebuyers since its introduction, and how the take-up is unlikely to slow-down anytime soon.

Nana Piglet Andrea Pigott (Owner) “I make clothes for children, but what I do is different to Joyce at Something Special, so we complement each other well. Whereas Joyce is traditional, I select modern designs, working with all kinds of bright and colourful fabrics. I’m a big believer in upcycling, which means taking good quality fabric and deconstructing it to create something new. There’s a

huge amount of waste in the textile industry and that’s something I try to address. As well as making clothes for children up to the age of five, I take on upholstery work too. I have commissions for soft furnishings, curtain alterations and anything else that can fit under a sewing machine! It’s lovely being part of the Cobblestone community. There’s an eclectic mix of people working here, all looking out for each other. That’s what village life is all about.”

Help to Buy has benefitted from an increased profile in recent times and this has helped more FTBs recognise its attributes. I believe this type of product is seen by most borrowers as being one which sits squarely in the domain of mainstream or highstreet lenders. Meaning the role of specialist lenders can often go ignored, which is a shame. There are specialist lenders who can provide Help to Buy solutions for borrowers with an adverse credit history, IVA’s or even bankruptcy issues, and this is an important part of the scheme which we tend to hear very little noise around (T&Cs obviously apply!) The specialists might not be applicable for everyone and still form a small proportion of the overall lending figures, but they should be playing a bigger role in supporting more credit impaired borrowers get a foot on the property ladder for the first time or even back onto it after falling off.

Sara Abbott Artist “I specialise in commissioned animal portraits in a range of styles, from small sketches to canvas paintings. This is my studio as well as gallery, so I can paint during quiet times. There’s never a huge amount to exhibit when you work to commissions, so paintings I do hang up are examples of my work. I've been an artist for 20 years and was previously in-house painter at Harrods before the pet department closes. Over the years, I have established a following that brings in enough work. Being an artist can be a lonely occupation, so I thought it would be fun to join the community at Cobblestone. I've been here since September 2018. For two months, I was in a corner unit, but I moved to gives me the space to display my art. As well as it being a cosy, sociable place, I hoped I might sell a couple of prints by being here and that is precisely what’s happened. I’ve also had walk-in commissions and have sold several paintings. Being in Steyning also gives me the opportunity to paint local landscapes. Sometimes I like a change, so will capture a scene of the Downs, instead of painting pets. We’re fortunate to be in a beautiful place.” www.sara-abbott.com

HORSHAM FILM SOCIETY PROMOTES GREAT MOVIES 4 FLOORS OF BEDS

It’s a wet, windy Monday night in early June at The Capitol, where only a handful of seats in Screen One are unoccupied. You’d be forgiven for assuming it was opening night for a Hollywood blockbuster. But the title of the film, Le Sens de la Fete, suggests otherwise. It isn’t the work of a widely-acclaimed director and doesn’t star an Academy award-winning actor. It’s fair to say that Olivier Nakache and Jean Pierre Bacri are far from household names, outside of France, anyway. However, the absence of expectation is part of the excitement for members of Horsham Film Society (HFS). Two years ago, the society celebrated its 50th anniversary. With its current season of films concluding with this French comedy, AAH meets Chairman Chris Tavener, Membership Secretary Vivien Smith, Treasurer Anne Lerat and long-serving member Audrey Garnett.

Chris: The Horsham Film Society (HFS) was formed in 1967. It was felt that people who wanted to enjoy foreign language films shouldn’t have to make the journey up to London. Audrey: I was at the first meeting. Two Horsham men drove the society forward in those early days. John Reardon, Minister at the United Reformed Church and Roy Worskett, a local architect. We met in a room at St John’s Ambulance Centre in Park Street and the first film we watched was Jules et Jim, by French director François Truffaut. It was shown on a 16mm projector and we all sat on wooden chairs.

Chris: The society eventually moved to the original Capitol Theatre, which was cold and uninviting. In 1981, the Council decided to knock it down to make way for Swan Walk. After much protest, they agreed to convert the ABC Cinema into a new Arts Centre. Whilst this was being built, HFS moved to a temporary home at Christ’s Hospital. It was then that I joined, in 1982. Audrey: HFS hasn't always been as popular as it is today. There have been times when only a handful of people would turn up. Now, attendances are bigger than ever!

Chris: The projection facilities at Christ’s Hospital were very good and the original ambience of the society returned. Beforehand, there was a chance of it all ending, as membership numbers had dwindled. We moved into the new Horsham Arts Centre in 1986 and have been there ever since, aside from a short period when it was rebuilt in 2002. We then held screenings in the Drill Hall but this proved unsatisfactory, Sussex RH12 1AG so we ceased film nights until we could return to the Arts Centre.

Vivien: Our aim is to represent world cinema, screening films that provide an insight into other cultures. The committee considers films that have been well received at festivals or have impressed critics, then presents a list of about 25 films for members to choose from. We offer a description of each one and a link to a trailer and members vote for those they’d most like to watch. Chris: Every season, we select nine modern films for our programme, with one screening each month. We also select a classic film. Next season, we have Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (1960) as it stars Albert Finney, who recently passed away. Anne: Usually the voting gives us a good selection of films from different parts of the

world. This season, we’ve seen productions from Germany (In the Fade/Western), Sweden (The Square), Russia (Loveless), South Korea (The Handmaiden), Romania (Graduation) and Mongolia (The Eagle Huntress). The only English language film we had was The Bookshop, starring Bill Nighy and Emily Mortimer. Chris: There are some high-quality films coming from countries you wouldn't necessarily think of. We don’t see many light-hearted comedies like La Sens de la Fete, but we’ve seen thought-provoking, powerful stories from the Middle East, Asia, South America and across Europe that deserve a wider audience. So, it’s a true voyage of discovery for members. We usually have a talk beforehand, providing background on the actors or director.

happens when we show German or French films, with language students joining us.

Anne: Members give an approval rating for every film. Sometimes, you might not personally have enjoyed it, but others may love it, which makes for an interesting discussion. That's why it's important to give members the chance to air opinions. Audrey: I’m grateful for the opportunity to see foreign language films on the big screen. Tonight, I noticed there were quite a few French people in the audience, which boosted our attendance. Chris: We often see people living locally coming to watch a film made in their home country. We screened Roman Polanski’s Knife in the Water as our classic film and many Poles came to see it. A similar thing

Vivien: When I lived in Germany, most of the films were dubbed into German and that is off-putting. Some people find subtitles difficult, but for me it’s a more authentic cinematic experience. You hear the tone and music of a language, which creates an atmosphere. When you know an actor’s voice, it’s awful hearing it dubbed into another language! Anne: I used to live in Cannes and during the film festival, I would go to the cinema almost every night. I love watching films from other countries. They offer a window into the life of different people and cultures. Chris: We’re not able to show any film we like, as some are not available. Last year, we hoped to screen a French film inspired by the likes of Alfred Hitchcock, but they were charging so much that it wasn't financially viable. We've also had Netflix-funded films voted for by members, most notably Roma, that we

couldn’t screen. They are not always available to us as digital downloads. Anne: There are strict rules governing screenings too. They need to be shown at a certain time and place. It’s very controlled, which is why we arrange our programme in advance. But certainly, there are films that rely on societies like ours for exposure. Chris: My favourite film is Oh, Mr Porter! We screened it as a classic selection on 35mm film. The humour is fantastic but the film jumps, as it’s been cut and spliced together. We then watched it for a second time after it had been digitally remastered and it was better than ever.

“I still love the cinema. I’ve seen some magnificent films, although my favourite is Cinema Paradiso.” Vivien: The society is in good health, with about 100 members. There are always new challenges; Everyman Cinema has opened in town and the way people watch films is evolving quickly. But our future looks strong, as we offer not only good films, but a social setting, where you can meet people with a shared interest.

Audrey: I’m 91-years-old now, but I still love the cinema. I’ve seen some magnificent films, although my favourite is Cinema Paradiso.

Chris: We have an excellent relationship with The Capitol. There aren't many cinemas that show these types of films, but as well as supporting HFS, The Capitol has committed to Film Hub South East, supporting independent films from Britain and around the world, offering even more wonderful films.

Films are shown once a month on a Monday at The Capitol, Horsham, beginning at 8pm. Annual membership costs £35, giving access to 10 films. A guest ticket is valid for a single screening (£5). For more information visit the website or email horshamfilmsociety@gmail.com

Run by Jason Gaché, the independent club is winning over members by offering something different...

vast experience Jason has been running health clubs for more than 25 years, gaining experience at hotels and

recreation centres in Horsham and Crawley before opening his own club in Forest Row in 1998. Working with his family, he then opened Constellations Health Club in Gatwick and established a personal training business in London. His brother, George, continues to coach in Forest Row, but Jason couldn’t resist the chance to return to Horsham. “We looked at opening a health club in Horsham nearly 20 years ago, but couldn’t find the right venue. Eventually, we went on a different journey until space at the Cricket Club became available three years ago.” “It offers stunning views and has the feel of the countryside, yet is only a couple of minutes along the Causeway into town. That is a big selling point, although we’re much more than a pretty view!”

Jason Gaché runs the health club at Horsham Sports Club

a hint of ‘average Joes’ The aim of Gaché's Health Club is to help people feel confident, capable and inspired by fitness. Jason has brought in a range of modern gym equipment and uses his experience to offer effective training classes. However, his key focus is on creating the right atmosphere. “Exercise should be a pleasure, not a chore,” he said. “What sets us apart is the environment. Members are like friends to us and to each other, so we help them progress. Many come to us having never been to a gym before, or having not felt comfortable elsewhere.” “Some are large and impersonal with wall-to-wall mirrors and a frequent turnaround of staff. We’re the opposite and you see people’s confidence increase as they progress. Their technique develops and - most importantly - they love what they're doing as there’s camaraderie.”

“I think it is fair to say there’s a hint of ‘Average Joes’ about us. Certainly, we attract people who may be too self-conscious at bigger gyms or feel uneasy in an environment of younger people playing loud music.” “There are several chain gyms around Horsham and they’re very good at what they provide. But as an independent health club, we need to fight that bit harder and offer something different. Every member is important to us and that tailored service we give them is ideal for certain people.”

TOP OF THE POT Wendy Yates is on a mission. It’s a mission that defined much of her career and continues in retirement, at a time when it’s more important than ever. That mission is to pass on knowledge of ceramics. It’s an art form practiced and enjoyed by civilisations for 20,000 years, yet Wendy believes pottery remains undervalued by society. “Ceramics has never truly been accepted as real art,” she said. “It isn’t funded properly, with adult education courses closing and fewer schools teaching it. I continue as I have knowledge and experience of diverse pottery styles that I want to pass on.”

“I never imagined we would reach the current point, where art and other creative subjects are not appreciated in schools. Physical Education used to be important, but lessons were cut and only now are we realising the importance of keeping children active. Now, art is being side-lined, even though creative subjects are more important than ever, as we live in a very visual world.”

Some find pottery therapeutic, some use sessions to meet new people, while others hope to become artists in their own right. “After retiring, I was upset at the thought of not having pottery in my life,” said Wendy. “I wasn't sure I could survive without opening the kiln door every day. That’s my fix! So, I started working on my own pieces and over the years, others have turned up wanting to learn.” “I host courses on specific subjects from time to time, but usually people come here for shorter sessions and it's up to them what they do. We’ve managed to create a wonderful community environment here.

“Lots of people find pottery therapeutic. It might be that they have a stressful job, busy home life or are perhaps caring for somebody. Coming here offers them a little respite.” “Matt Smith used to be production potter, but like many others struggled to make a living from it, so he changed careers. He brought his kiln here and comes in to maintain his passion and pass on his own skills. Lots of people enjoy watching him work and he’s often asked to ‘throw’ a bowl or vase. Katie Wells is another who comes in here. She is a young illustrative artist with lots of promise. I feel I'm one of the lucky ones, as I’m continuing to do what I love with others around me, which is important, as pottery can be solitary work.”

“Ceramics has moved from a craft into an art form.

86-year-old Jean Swallowfield working on a smoke-kilned bowl

NEW IDENTITY Wendy’s desire to pass on ceramics skills was inspired by her career in teaching. After working in state education, Wendy moved into adult education, teaching everything from basic pottery to running training courses for teachers, demonstrating how kilns can be used to improve ceramics classes in school. After 16 years, she accepted a job as a ceramist at a school in Ascot, eventually became Head of Art, before moving to Cranleigh School. By the time of her retirement a decade later, ceramics was a major part of the Art Department, with students receiving some of the best Pre-U results in the country. But Wendy always felt a lack of love for pottery as an art form.

Young ceramicist Katie Wells with a hand-painted jug

“There was a time when I would tell people that I’m a potter, and they’d say, “that's nice, what else do you do?” But thanks to artists like Grayson Perry, ceramics has moved from being a craft into being an art form. It has a new identity. We’ve also have programmes like the BBC’s Great Pottery Throw Down which has helped raise its profile.” “I watched ceramics decline for 40 years, with skills being lost and schools furnished with kilns that weren’t used. I'm just trying to keep it alive. Occasionally, I meet someone that I know will pass on the skill themselves in later life, and that gives me great satisfaction. I’d hate to see these skills disappear, as pottery is what I love. I will probably drop dead with clay in my hand.”

Wendy with some of her outdoor poppy seed heads

CLAY ‘N’ GLAZE The variety of skills that Wendy has learnt over the years is reflected in the students’ work. There’s an array of dark, smoke-fired pieces heated in the outside kiln, clay lizards made by children, saucers decorated with shells, vases and bowls painted with floral patterns or abstract colours, pieces with porcelain or glass-fired elements and ornamental pieces infused with horse hair. With such wide-ranging pieces, Wendy admits that when she does have time to produce work of her own, it’s

difficult to define. “People don't know me as a potter with a certain style,” she said. “I was recently inspired by a visit to the coast, creating a threepanelled piece depicting waves crashing on rocks. It's a cacophony of materials with various oxides mixed together, and very different to my other work. I usually do big outdoor sculptural pieces, like poppy seed heads. I enjoy natural forms, but there’s usually an abstract element too.” “I also love working with glass and metal, fusing with ceramics to create something unique. My art does fire off at tangents, as I’ve taught for over 40 years and different experiences inform my work.”

“Even now, I attend a course every summer to learn something new, or research a style that might take me in a new direction, as there is no limit as to what you can learn and achieve in ceramics. “But what I really love is teaching. Since then I have always admired butterflies; the splendidly colourful Peacock nectaring on the garden buddleia and lace-like Marbled Whites flitting across flower-rich meadows. Butterflies are beautiful, and they are rather fascinating too. Just a glimpse into their private lives reveals there is more to butterflies than meets the eye. Take the blues, many of them have evolved incredible relationships with ants. The caterpillars secrete sweet sticky juices that the ants find delicious and then when the time comes to pupate, the ants carry the pupae underground and act as security guards until the adult is ready to hatch. But my favourite butterfly this month is the Silver-Washed Fritillary, a orange and black butterfly, who glides powerfully through sunshine-dappled woodland glades.
