The March 2019 cover features Belal Ahmed at Curry Village in Jengers Mead, Billingshurst. Belal, co-owner of the new Indian restaurant, is pictured in front of the colourful wall decoration, which offers a vibrant backdrop. Other contenders for the cover included Adam Stamp, a nine-year-old member of Horsham Fencing Club. However, his black eye - not related to his fencing exploits - may not present the club in the best light! Another option was Malcolm Willis, who has created a new Horsham Society Children’s Trail.

Notes from the Editor

The homeless, sat there “raking in the money!” Occasionally, The Daily Mail takes a break from warning the Duchess of Sussex that she’s making the same mistakes as Princess Diana. Instead, it runs a story about the rich homeless people begging on our streets. In August 2010, beggars were “raking in more than £20,000 a year.” Just a month later, they found a “professional beggar” who made over £23,000. By last year, rough sleepers made “two and a half times the average salary” thanks to the generosity of people in Royal Leamington Spa. The homeless were “flocking there” apparently. Showing that it has its finger firmly on the pulse of social change, just last month The Mail ran a story about a “college dropout” who makes five times more than he did as a waiter by begging on Twitter.

authenticity of those claiming to be homeless, whilst those setting budgets must wonder if homeless people need our support. This is precisely what has happened in West Sussex. The County Council is cutting the housingrelated support budget from £6.3m a year, to £2.3m in 2020/21. It was only public outcry that prevented it from being a 100% cut. Responding to criticism, WSCC claimed that the decision “hadn’t been taken lightly.” Whatever that means. However, those affected could point to the council’s budget and wonder if that’s the case. After all, WSCC can find £44.5million to build solar farms on unused council land. Whilst its commitment to sustainable energy is admirable, that’s a huge sum for a cash-strapped council to be investing with the long-term goal of generating income. Sorry, electricity!

You might have seen homeless people in Horsham, with their fake pleas scribbled on cardboard. What you don’t know is that the cardboard was torn off the packaging of a new 75-inch Ultra HD television. After a day sat around pretending to be depressed and tired, they jump in German cars and drive to their modern suburban homes to count the cash. That is the perception we’re left with. The frequency of such articles has consequences. The public questions the

The cuts will result in a network of hostels, drop-in centres and support teams being dismantled, affecting rough sleepers, victims of domestic abuse and frail older people. Critics warn that the knock-on effects - not just in terms of human impact but on the NHS will be vast. Stonepillow is a homeless charity working in the Chichester and Arun District. It says that the number of people sleeping rough in the South East has risen by 261% since 2010. It is part of a coalition of support providers

that has produced a video, featuring people who have benefitted from its services. Watching a snippet on the BBC local news bulletin, I was surprised to see an old work friend appear. He was my team leader at Homebase over 20 years ago! He wasn’t someone I knew well, but he was a whizz on the wood-cutting machine. Somewhere along the line, things obviously took a bad turn and he needed help and he found it. Sometimes, people say: “There’s some people you can’t help.” That may be true. But a great deal more can be helped. I’m reminded of a feature we did some years ago on The Ark, which ran at Horsham United Reformed Church three times a week. Led by Lisa Burrell, it helped people who were homeless or struggling with addictions. Sadly, it’s gone now, but it turned lives around. I recognised one of those I interviewed that day from my time at Forest School. He was struggling with drug addiction and became overwhelmed with emotion as we chatted over a cup of tea. What made it worse was that he had a young son with him. Two years later, I bumped into them again, in the Carfax. He was happy and healthy and had regular work in construction, thanks partly to the efforts of The Ark. He had turned his life around. I offered to buy him lunch and he laughed. “Honestly mate. I’m fine!”

Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens will open to the public on Saturday 6 April. This postponement of the March date follows nearly two years of extensive restoration work on the Grade 1 listed gardens and on-site facilities, in one of the biggest garden restoration projects for nearly 30 years. Adam Streeter, General Manager, said that 10 miles of pathways have had to be inspected and many were rebuilt after collapsing into the steep valley. Also, some 10,000 trees have been individually checked, with tree surgery carried out

where necessary. “We very much regret this further delay in opening the gardens,” he said. “The delay is primarily due to issues in constructing the car park. Another issue has been the discovery of a great crested newt in a pond. There has been a lot of anticipation around the opening. I can only say that we are doing everything we can to complete the work and that visitors will be impressed by what we have achieved. The spring displays will be stunning!” www.leonardsleegardens.co.uk

Cottesmore School has been named as Boarding School of the Year at the national TES Independent School Awards. Described by one guide as a “fabulously old-fashioned country prep,” the judges said Cottesmore epitomises many of the best qualities of British boarding. New starters are made to feel welcome through a buddy system to support their transition into boarding. Long-standing traditions form an integral part of school life, from Cottesmore’s Got Talent to the 100 year-old Carson Cup

cross country run and the leavers’ boat race on the lake. Extensive trips, a broad array of clubs and facilities such as grass tennis courts and an adventure playground mean pupils have space to explore interests and talents. Lead judge John Dunston said Cottesmore highlighted how Cottesmore “encouraged boarders to recognise how they need to contribute to the community and that the world doesn't just revolve around them.” www.cottesmoreschool.com

Robotic Mowing Has Arrived! Husqvarna Automower® is a great example of how far technology has come. Imagine sitting in your garden enjoying a cup of tea whilst your lawnmower does all the cutting work for you! Manufactured in the UK, the Husqvarna Automower® series are world leaders in robotic mowing and are smart enough to negotiate the challenges of large and complex lawns, multiple narrow passages, obstacles, tough terrain and slopes.

GPS-assisted navigation and a host of features make it the intelligent way to keep your lawn green, healthy and perfectly mowed all year round.

Husqvarna Automower® uses razorsharp blades to cut every blade of grass little by little, resulting in a lush, green lawn. The lawn is mowed frequently, producing grass clippings so small that no collection is needed. The clippings become natural fertiliser.

HISTORY REBOOT

FORMER TEACHER UPDATES HORSHAM CHILDREN’S TRAIL Horsham Society Chairman Malcolm Willis has created a town centre trail that meets the demands of modern children. He explains the process behind it... I spent 40 years working in education, retiring as Headteacher of Pound Hill Junior School in 2014. I had the idea of updating the original Horsham Society’s Children’s Trail as a way of reconnecting with younger generations again. I was inspired by hearing school children from Arunside Primary. Walking through town, I overheard some of the pupils talking about Horsham’s old buildings. So, I contacted the school and was very grateful that they allowed me the opportunity to discuss the trail with children in the school’s News Club. The old trail was written more than 20 years ago and although the factual content is correct, it was immediately apparent from our discussions that the style was no longer

appropriate. The pupils thought it was like a school worksheet. They certainly put me in my place on several occasions and it wasn’t until they tested my 10th version that the News Club felt it was good enough! The children wanted something more colourful and photographic. It needed to be small enough to fit in their pocket. It was also important that the book could be completed over time. So, if you're in the Carfax or by the Remembrance Garden, you can fill it in, section by section. There are many interesting facts about Horsham, but the idea is to encourage children to explore the town and for the guide to be educational. So, it’s not just a matter of finding the Bandstand; you need to locate a hidden feature that people tend not to notice. It took me 18 months to complete, as the teacher in me found it difficult to cut historical content. The reality is, they don’t need to know the full history behind every building.

The children were great and because of their input, the booklet has a points system. Tasks are graded by complexity, so awakening the jailed prisoner at Horsham Museum is 15 points, but finding the angel on St Mark’s Spire earns you 25! There are interesting snippets from the past. There is an old story about a grave at St Mary's, where a woman is supposedly buried at a 90° angle as she was a Muslim and was buried facing Mecca. In truth, the grave faces north. The woman had converted to Catholicism. The graveyard was full and her grave needed to be squeezed in at an unusual angle.

“It wasn’t until they tested my 10th version that the News Club at Arunside School felt the book was ready!”

The book has a checklist and when every task has been completed, children can visit Horsham Museum and claim a certificate. It’s a nice reward for the effort. The trail is ideal for children aged six and upwards. Looking ahead, I may create a smaller trail for parents with toddlers. Arunside will be using the 40-page book, called Spy Horsham, for its own curricular studies on the town centre. The Horsham Society has funded the guide and is distributing a set of 36 books to every Key Stage 2 school in Horsham and Roffey. Schools in surrounding villages

can contact the Society if they would like copies. The trail focuses on the heart of town, from Chart Way and the Carfax to the Causeway and Remembrance Gardens. As well as finding historic buildings, landmarks and plaques, the book has a list of famous people associated with Horsham, from Bluebird driver Donald Campbell, who went to school in the Causeway, through to Holly Willoughby, who studied at Collyer’s. The Society has financed the book but it’s worthwhile, as it raises awareness among young people of what is around them in a fun way. We hope it may also raise the profile of the Horsham Society, as we’re sometimes viewed as a funny old group! Many people don't know what we do, but we still review every planning application decided by Horsham District Council and keep an eye on things!

SWEET HARMONY

JUST ONE BIG FAMILY AT TURNING POINT PRODUCTIONS

Despite the presence of the AAH duo, the predominantly teenage choir at Turning Point Productions are unflustered as they embark on their warm-up routine. Huddled together in a circle of sorts, they spontaneously break into harmonies, looping several songs whilst stretching their vocal chords. It all ends with laughter, not of embarrassment, but of surprise at someone’s choice of song! This one scene encapsulates the close-knit group, which hours later took to the stage for its latest production, Music from the Movies and Musicals. The influence of the youthful cast is evident in the programme, with an abundance of 21st

century classics from Hamilton and The Greatest Showman. For Director Helen SmithTurner and husband Andrew, it is this freedom of expression that separates Turning Point from other musical groups.

The Show Must Go On Turning Point Productions began life in Devon in 2008, with Andrew developing a successful choir before expanding into theatrical elements. Having previously worked as a touring musician, he moved into musical education, which brought the family to Horsham. “We had over 60 people involved in Turning

Point in Devon, with a choir, supper club and a Glee club, says Andrew. “From the outset, we ran it as a not-for-profit community group. “Three years ago, I was offered the chance to teach percussion at secondary and primary schools in Horsham, which is a job I love. Since then, we’ve gradually made connections to replicate our Devon success here.

You’ve Got a Friend in Me The size and considerable talent of the family meant that TPP had a solid foundation on which to build. Five of Helen’s six children are involved, with Dale, Raife, Kaia and Dolly enjoying the

limelight and Tristan being a crew member. Son-in-law Stephen Brown operates sound and lighting, whilst Helen’s dad, Chris Smith, is the oldest member of the cast at 71. Chris, who has been involved with amateur dramatics since he was a teenager, said: “As a grandparent, it’s lovely to be on stage with your family. It means we are very close, although you certainly see the highs and lows! “The success of this group is primarily down to Helen. Since meeting Andrew, she's become a musically-orientated person and loves directing the productions. “As for the cast, they are a young, talented bunch. Raife and Luke Martin are both superb

singers. But we have no prima donnas. Everyone is happy to be part of the team and that makes us an extraordinarily close-knit group.”

Helen has been incredible. I've literally cried on her shoulder! We hold rehearsals round the Smith-Turner house, drinking tea and squeezing around the piano in the kitchen like one big family. “Everyone is treated as equals. MIND, the mental health charity, has played a massive part in my life and when I suggested we raise funds for them, everyone unanimously agreed, which meant so much to me.

Can’t Stop the Feeling Raife Smith is one of the outstanding talents in the group. Having toured with the professional cast of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, he is now studying musical theatre at Chichester College. Raife is autistic and music has always been a positive outlet. He believes others could benefit from a similar experience. “As a kid, I was a bit out-of-control, but my family were always there for me, he said. “I had some difficult times at school, but autism never affected me on stage, having grown up in a house where I could sing from the moment I woke up to the minute I went to bed. “I love listening to Lloyd-Webber musicals and things like Les Miserables, but recently we’ve been singing songs from Hamilton. Even though the musical is set in the 18th-century, it has an R&B style with lots of low notes and fast lyrics, which makes it a massive challenge for us.

“Hamilton The Greatest Show has an R&B style There is great variety in TPP’s shows, so with low notes and whilst the singing cast may be small, others step in when it hosts murder fast lyrics, which mystery supper evenings, quiz nights or makes it a massive festive pantomimes. There is no cost in joining, so young challenge.” people are not burdened by membership or show fees. They contribute in other ways, selling tickets or organising raffles. The lack of a committee means everyone’s opinion is heard, with decisions made quickly. Consequently, there’s a youthful influence at the heart of everything. “Our children are obsessed with Hamilton!” says Helen. “Several songs from it were in our previous show, Raife Unplugs the Musicals. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house and that helped us grow a strong following locally. “After that, the cast wanted to perform more from Hamilton, as they want to be tested. There's not much appetite for traditional musicals like My Fair Lady. They are catered for elsewhere. Young performers and audiences want something new and exciting, so we have songs from Toy Story and The Greatest Showman. “But we never just cobble songs together; there’s always fluidity as we strive to take the audience on a journey.” Turning Point Production’s next show will be Am-Dram is Murder, an interactive murder mystery with two-course supper, on Friday 31 May – Saturday 1 June. BATTLE BREWING OVER INCINERATOR PLANS

BURNING

ISSUE

In June 2018, plans for a new incinerator in Horsham were rejected by West Sussex County Council.

its proposal and revised designs for the plant will now be considered by a governmentappointed Planning Inspector.

There was delight for those who had campaigned against it. There were 1,200 objections to the application, whilst a petition opposing the incinerator was signed by no less than 5,000 people.

The No Incinerator 4 Horsham (NI4H) campaign and West Sussex County Council (WSCC) continue to object, whilst a new petition against the appeal is gaining momentum. But Britaniacrest Recycling (BR) claims that many of the fears surrounding the proposed facility and some reasons for objection are unfounded.

Now, Britaniacrest Recycling is attempting to overturn the council’s decision. It has amended

AAH met representatives on both sides‌

What does Britaniacrest Recycling want to build? A Recycling, Recovery and Renewable Energy facility. This would take in commercial/industrial waste, as well as municipal waste, which is our household rubbish. Some materials (wood, metals, plastics, for example) would be segregated during a sorting process. The residual waste - whatever cannot be re-used, recycled or composted - would be burnt in an incinerator. This is turn creates energy. The process is called Energy from Waste (EFW). How does the incineration part work? Residual waste is fed into a combustion chamber and burnt at a temperature of 850 degrees Celsius. This creates steam, which in turn drives an electrical generator to produce electricity for the National Grid. Another positive is that incineration prevents burying waste at landfill sites. David Spencer, representing Britaniacrest, says: “The process makes us more selfsufficient in energy terms. If built, this site would produce about 21 megawatts of electricity. That’s difficult to quantify, but the plant would generate power for about 45,000 homes.” Sounds great! Well, there are two sides to every story. This story has many different chapters and most of them have sub-plots! For example, there are doubts as to how much electricity

Authorised Dealership

Director Chris Foss (far right) has ambitious plans for the Britaniacrest Recycling site off Langhurstwood Road

The site is already used to sort residual and commercial waste. Some is sent to landfill, although much of it is packed into bales and exported to Energy from Waste (EFW) plants in Germany.

EFW plants produce. Peter Catchpole, West Sussex County Councillor for the Holbrook division, says: “Nothing is stipulated to ensure the company fulfil that level of energy production. Certainly, technical people who have looked at the planning application don't feel the facility will do what Britaniacrest is claiming, in terms of the amount of energy put into the National Grid. Is that the biggest issue? Far from it. There are many reasons why people oppose this plan. Some think the location is wrong, others feel it will have a detrimental effect on health for residents. Another view is that incineration is a dated solution to waste management and detracts from more sustainable recycling options. WSCC rejected the first application on six counts. However, in its objection to the Planning Inspector, it will only object to one: the “unacceptable impact on the landscape and visual amenity of the area. Why only one objection? Depends who you ask. Chris Foss, Director at BR, says: “The last application was recommended for approval by planning officers but was knocked back by councillors on six points. Five of those are not being defended now because they are difficult to defend. One reason was based on vehicle movements, even though we never asked for any more movements than we already have permission for. However, an NI4H spokesperson has another view: “When we held a public meeting at The

Holbrook Club, Cllr Jonathan Essex talked about local authority planning in context of austerity. WSCC has just set its budget and difficult choices had to be made. The council can't pay for everything. So, if it can only object on one point, at least it is a jolly good one. As a group, NI4H will highlight other valid reasons for objection. Let’s discuss the location first... The facility is planned for the former Wealden Brickworks site off Langhurstwood Road. If you’re travelling east on the A264 between the Dorking Road and Rusper Road roundabouts, it’s the first road on the left. It is not a greenfield site. The area is surrounded by a Mechanical/Biological Waste Treatment plant (operated by Biffa), the landfill site at Brookhurst Wood, and Wienerberger Ltd brickworks. That doesn’t sound like a bad spot... Campaigners feel differently. The site is close to Warnham Station, which is on the Sutton and Mole Valley lines between Horsham and London. A NI4H spokesperson said: “West Sussex has a tourism strategy and wants to attract visitors. There is a big tourism push to coincide with Horsham’s Year of Culture. For anyone arriving by train, the first thing they’re going to see of the town is a massive incinerator. That can’t be the impression we want to make. What about the facility itself? The plan is for a 37m high building, with the ‘chimney’ stack standing 95m high.

More than 5,000 signed a petition opposing the incinerator

Campaigners claim that even the main structure will be visible from a wide area, although the design has been altered since the original application. David Spencer says: “The size is dictated by the machinery that will go inside. However, we’ve collaborated with technology providers and have reduced the height by 7m compared with the original design. We will also dig down two metres for the base, so most of the plant will sit under the tree canopy. In addition, architects have come up with a curved design to make it more attractive.” How much will it cost? About £180million. If given the green light, the plant would take three years to build, providing about 300 construction jobs. The operational facility would create 35 posts. Britaniacrest also claims it would be good for the environment. Director Chris Foss said: “We are a recycling company, making money by extracting recyclable materials. A major factor that has been overlooked is that the plant will include recycling facilities. Much like our Hookwood site, machinery and manual pickers will sort and segregate timber, plastics, metals and aggregate, with only residual waste being burnt. Even the bottom ash is re-used by the construction industry.” Is burning a long-term solution? Campaigners say incinerators have no place in a modern waste strategy. A NI4H spokesperson said: “People are trying to support the government’s new Waste and Resource Strategy, building on the positive impact of Blue Planet. There’s pressure on manufacturers to cut packaging and new measures encourage us all to increase recycling. Individuals, businesses and local authorities are taking steps to raise recycling rates to 60%. Research from UKWIN (United Kingdom Without Incineration Network) suggests that the climate change impact from incineration is worse than landfill sites. Most of what is incinerated could be recycled.”

Britaniacrest Recycling process thousands of tonnes of Horsham’s residual waste every year

Look at other options? Perhaps. A NI4H spokesperson said: “The world is moving quickly and people are changing their recycling habits. The future is not burying or burning things; the future is green. Some countries have community recycling hubs, where families can enjoy the experience. We too should consider ways to make it easier to recycle and dispose of waste. Energy from waste plants might have been a good idea 20 years or even five years ago. But it isn’t the right idea anymore.”

European countries that have far higher levels of recycling, where they rely less on landfill and more on incineration.” Are incinerators bad for your health? All incineration permits are issued by the Environment Agency, with restrictions on what can and can’t be burnt. David Spencer says: “There's a lot of misinformation about emissions. The Health Protection Agency carried out a long-term study on the effects of emissions on the local environment from incinerators. The study found that any risk to human health and the environment is minimal or insignificant.” *

‘The need for an Energy from Waste plant is highlighted in the West Sussex Waste Plan’

What does Britaniacrest think? It claims that EFW plants can help increase recycling rates, pointing to the example set by Scandinavian nations. In Copenhagen, one remarkable municipal incineration plant incorporates a ski slope on its roof. David Spencer said: “The UK is behind many

Minimal risk is still some risk… A point made by campaigners. NI4H says: “One recent report highlighted that people are healthy and engaged in leisure activities here in the Horsham District. That shouldn’t

Are incinerators really worse than landfill? In the government’s waste hierarchy guide, a five-tiered pyramid lists ‘prevention’ as the best solution, followed by ‘re-use of materials’ and then ‘recycling’. Nearer the bottom is ‘energy recovery’, with ‘disposal’ (meaning landfill or incineration without energy recovery) at the bottom. David Spencer said: “Landfill is the least sustainable solution as you’re putting valuable resources in the ground and not getting any energy back from it. That's why the government and others overseas are phasing out landfill.” So, ‘energy recovery’ is the fourth best option in a five-tiered pyramid? Yes. And some objectors believe we should be aiming higher than that!

This stitched-panoramic shot shows the Britaniacrest Recycling site as it looks today. On the far left, you can just about see two diggers on top of the landfill site. The grey building is the Biffa-run Mechanical/Biological Treatment plant. Britaniacrest Recycling currently handles residual waste from that plant. To the far right is the brickworks, run by Wienerberger Ltd. On the far right is one of the two warehouses where Britaniacrest sorts and segregates recyclable materials from the industrial and commercial waste. The residual waste from the MBT is processed and exported to Energy From Waste facilities, primarily in Germany.

be a reason for us to become less healthy with noxious fumes from an incinerator and diesel emissions from heavy goods vehicles, particularly when they’re idling at traffic lights. This problem will increase when the new North Horsham estate is built.” What new estate? Horsham District Council has granted permission for a housing estate on greenfield land with 2,750 homes along with schools, amenities and associated infrastructure. According to NI4H, this is another good reason to object to the plant: “There will be a new road built through the middle of this estate and the current plan is for HGVs heading for Langhurstwood Road to use it.” Will there be even more HGVs than we already see along that road? That’s debatable. Chris Foss says: “Currently, the site has planning permission to receive 230,000 tonnes of material by road, and the same going out. If we’re successful with this bid, the plant could potentially cut 180,000 tonnes of movement per annum. With each vehicle carrying about 25 tonnes, that equates to a lot less vehicles on the road and consequently less emissions.” However, NI4H claims that the number of current HGV movements is well below the permitted capacity. So, in real terms, there wouldn’t be a reduction.

So Britaniacrest is already using the site in question? Yes. Chris Foss said: “We mainly deal with construction and demolition waste. Only about a third of the waste that the UK produces is household waste, with the rest being industrial. So, it’s a huge problem. In a joint venture with Seneca, we also have a contract with West Sussex County Council to take the residual waste from the Mechanical/Biological Treatment (MBT) plant next door.” You’ve lost me… All the ‘black bin liner’ waste that we put in our green lid bins goes to the MBT plant where cans, plastic bottles, yoghurt pots, food waste and anything else that can be recycled is picked out. The rest

goes to Britaniacrest Recycling. Some of that waste is sent to landfill. It used to be dumped in the landfill site on the other side of the fence, but that is now full. It is being covered with ground materials and lining, to restrict its emissions, and will be landscaped. In a few years’ time, we could be looking at a wild meadow. Instead, some waste goes to landfill in Redhill, whilst some is used as RDF. RDF? Refuse Derived Fuel. Basically, it is exported overseas and used to create energy from waste in the same way that Britaniacrest Recycling would like to do at its own facility. Chris Foss said: “The UK imports goods from Europe, everything from flowers to electronic goods. To make travel economical, the lorries return with exports, some of which is waste.

Of course, that’s an awful lot of mileage and has an impact on our carbon footprint.”

“The future is not burying or burning things; the future Are there any incinerators in is green.” West Sussex? There are three plants in NI4H Hampshire and one in Newhaven,

Why isn’t it sent to UK incinerators? Because there aren’t enough of them, according to Britaniacrest. David Spencer said: “Some countries recognised the problem many years ago and built EFW plants to move away from landfill. The UK caught on late and although we are building plants, we’re not doing so at the rate required, as our planning system is complicated. Those that are permitted operate at capacity very quickly. We still have a problem involving millions of tonnes of waste that we’ll need to deal with in the future.”

but not in West Sussex. Plans for an Energy from Waste plant at Ford, near Arundel, have proved equally unpopular. Cllr Peter Catchpole says it is time to stop dealing with applications on an ad-hoc basis and develop a national strategy. “We look at the national picture for electricity, water and infrastructure; so why not waste? Incinerators are very expensive and always contentious. Their placement should be subject to national consideration, as there are places that have an industrial context and are not rural or within an area of natural beauty. It should not be beyond the wit of man for that to happen.”

He’s right, isn’t he? Britaniacrest point out that surrounding counties have Energy from Waste plants, yet West Sussex has none. If it should have one, an industrial site that already deals with residual waste and is next to an MBT plant would seem as good as anywhere. Chris Foss said: “We don’t need to justify this, as the need for an EFW plant is highlighted in the West Sussex Waste Plan. We are a local company and most of the material currently coming into the site is from the local area. Talk of us dealing with all of London's rubbish if the plant is built is nonsense.” What do objectors say to that? Peter Catchpole said: “There is a bone of contention about whether there is already sufficient incineration capacity, as the amount of waste coming through them is not going up. As we increase recycling efforts, residual waste will go down, then level out. If we keep building incinerators, we’ll end up with overcapacity. But those who invested in these £150m projects will need them to keep burning all day and night for 35 years, seeking waste from a wider area to get a return.”

How will it end? The NI4H group is working with the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England (CPRE) and UK Without Incineration Network (UKWIN) as well as Green councillors and technical advisors as it builds a case. Objections must be in by 4 March, with the Planning Inspector to rule on the appeal late this year. The group is also fundraising to finance technical reports and barristers to launch a credible opposition. NI4H said: “Everybody's representations from the previous application are still valid but new submissions can be made. We’re finding that people are even more determined to see off this threat.” And the developer? Chris Foss said: “We’ve worked tirelessly on this application, but we know not to count our chickens. This is a hugely ambitious project for us, being our first Energy from Waste facility. It’s a £180m project and if there wasn't a genuine need for it, I wouldn't be burdening our family business with that kind of debt.” WORDS: BEN MORRIS PICTURES: TOBY PHILLIPS (Protest images courtesy of NI4H) For more details, visit www.britaniacrestrecycling.co.uk/ wealden-works-dp No Incinerator 4 Horsham website: https://ni4h.org * The study, funded by Public Health England and published on 22 November, was carried out by researchers at the Small Area Health Statistics Unit and King’s College, London. Chris and Sylvie Holt are looking forward to a less demanding schedule as La Source moves on from Horsham. The store, renowned for its stylish, contemporary furniture by leading designers on the continent, has been a fixture along East Street since 2004. La Source closed in February, but Chris and Sylvie are continuing the business from a warehouse unit in Storrington. “We are leaving for positive reasons,” says Chris. “It’s a work/life balance for us, as there's no compunction for us to trade on Sundays or Bank Holidays. We might even take a week off at Christmas, rather than working all the hours God sends! “As well as the shop, we offer an interior design and consultation service, meeting clients from all over the South East, which we’ll continue to do. We have deliberately bought a warehouse that’s big enough for the new showroom to expand. The focus will

be on the furniture range we’re best known for, as some of our high-end sofas and furniture are among the very best in the world. As we won’t have passing trade, some of the smaller lines will probably go, but we will evolve to meet demand. We've had some great times, but now feels like the right time to move on.”

PASSION FOR DESIGN

For 14 years, La Source has offered something different on East Street, with Chris and Sylvie often being the first UK outlet for sleek, exciting new designs from Europe. Whilst the shop has attracted customers well beyond the district, La Source has been a regular supporter of town events. It was a vital sponsor of early Piazza Italia festivals and remains a supporter of Plum Jam. “When we first opened, there wasn't anywhere in town that sold the kind of quality products we wanted to offer,” says Chris. “Our aim was to offer West End products at a provincial price. “From the outset, everything has been curated by the two of us. We’ve had some interesting furniture, often with a degree of exclusivity, but there's nothing here that we wouldn't have in our own home. We love

every item. That helps us when we talk to customers, as that passion comes through.” Chris, Sylvie and interior design consultant Nicola will be taking a short break before the warehouse opens in a couple of months. “We're having our first holiday in a long time,” says Sylvie. “But people can still order furniture through the website, or contact us about our design and consultation services, as it’s still business as usual for La Source. We’ve loved being in Horsham and being involved in community events. We’re look to continue that in Storrington. The village has an active business community and we’re excited about the next chapter.”

Advanced Lawn Care

‘No one will care more for your lawn’

Is your lawn thick, healthy and moss free?

Curry Village offers a new twist on our national cuisine In 2001, Foreign Secretary Robin Cook famously cited chicken tikka masala as the national dish of Britain.

Our treatments include fertiliser, herbicide, moss, leather jacket and chafer grub, scarification and seeding, aeration.

He said it was an example of the way that the country “absorbs and adapts external influences”. But recent times have seen a gradual decline in the success of curry houses, as “going out for an Indian” became “staying in and making an Indian” or “going out to the supermarket to buy an Indian banquet for two for £8.”

The consequence of all of this competition is that Indian restaurants must offer something different. That’s something Curry Village co-owner Belal Ahmed is only too aware of. “If you go in most curry houses in Horsham or anywhere, they are making the same food, using the same sauces, served in the same steel dishes, just like they were 20 years ago. People are bored of it. They want something new.” “You still need to have korma and tikka masala on the menu, otherwise you won't survive. Some people have enjoyed such dishes for years and will order the same thing every time, which is fine. But they are not truly Indian dishes. Our

Belal, who co-owns the business with Nurul Alam, with Lilu Miah at front of house and Rajkumar Rao and Mehbub Rehman in the kitchen, cites Chilli Pickle in Brighton as an example of the direction Indian restaurants can take to meet modern demands. “They proved that if you have the courage to offer something different, people will try it. Chilli Pickle is now one of the busiest restaurants in Brighton and attracts people from all over Sussex. So, we also wanted to offer a fresh perspective on Indian food and encourage our customers to try new dishes. “As you can see from the reviews, we love to talk to people. With fresh seafood coming in from Newhaven, fish dishes have proved a hit too. The Goa Goan Fish Curry has halibut chunks with coconut milk, whilst Jaltarang of Jaipur combines lobster, scallops, seabass and calamari. “We invest in better ingredients, even buying in high quality rice that can make a big difference to the dining experience for only a few extra pennies,” says Belal. “Customers are very discerning now and they recognise average ingredients, so we use good local produce. People often comment on our Chicken Malai Kebab, as we use fresh fillet, coated with mozzarella cheese. You can

immediately taste the difference between fillet and breast chicken and that’s the quality people now expect from an Indian restaurant.” “If you love seafood, our dishes include Shabnam Chingri (a Kerala dish of shelled, fresh water baby lobster) and pan fried Atlantic scallops. BIG DREAM AT LITTLE STREET

A play centre in Rudgwick is proving popular thanks to its focus on role play. Rebecca Wolstenholme, Franchise Owner at Little Street, explains the concept to AAH.

THE CONCEPT “Little Street has a variety of themed rooms to inspire a child’s imagination and development. Each room is filled with props to offer a creative and educational play experience. Here in Rudgwick, we have a pizza restaurant, beauty salon, supermarket, construction site, veterinary clinic and a police station. Within the road area, we have ride-on vehicles and a large fire engine.” “Little Street’s founders like one room at every centre to have a customer service orientation. Here, we have Piccolo's Pizza, which gives children

the opportunity to dress up as a chef and serve pretend meals.” “Except for the supermarket, every playroom has a uniform. Children can dress up as a police officer and ride a police motorcycle, wear a hard hat on the construction site or wear scrubs in the vet’s clinic. Little Street play centres also have a theatre with fancy dress and musical instruments. I’ve seen children dress up as Batman and sing their favourite Disney songs! There’s a disco light too, so they feel like they’re on stage.”

MS

THE BENEFITS “Educational play can have a hugely positive impact on a child’s development as it encourages confidence and social interaction.” “You can look in any of the rooms and see how children approach activities and tasks in different ways. Initially, some take things slowly. In the supermarket, they might push a shopping trolley around, but after a while, they’ll develop the skills needed to complete a shopping list through colour identification, recognition of shapes or even reading the product labels.” “The play centre is not an alternative to nursery. It is just a lovely opportunity for a parent, grandparent or carer to truly engage

“Competitors have tried to replicate aspects of the business, as it’s difficult to trademark an idea.” THE BUSINESS “The first Little Street was opened five years ago in Frimley. The founders, Hannah Elbaum and husband Shay, found success by offering a unique play experience. It was as close to being an overnight success as you’ll see. They decided to expand their portfolio and ours is the fifth centre, with others being planned.”

“Competitors have tried to replicate aspects of the business, as it’s difficult to trademark an idea. However, Little Street hopes to stay ahead by excelling in terms of the quality of the experience. Our toys are safe and built to last, with the layout of every themed room designed to offer the highest possible play value for children.”

“The feedback from parents is superb, as it’s a very clean environment. After every session, we have an extensive clean-up. Every toy and item of clothing is returned to its home; all the supermarket items are carefully placed back on the shelf; the cafe is hoovered and the toilets cleaned. We make every play session feel like the first one of the day.”

THE VENUE “Rudgwick Sports and Social Club in the King George V building closed about 18 months ago. There is a strong sporting community in the village with junior and senior football, a thriving tennis club and cricket in the summer. For one reason or another, the social side didn't evolve, so the building was passed back to the parish council.” “Living nearby, I had previously approached the social club, looking to sub-let space to run Little Street. It wasn’t feasible, but later we held discussions with the council and signed the lease in November 2018.” “After Spending eight weeks modifying the site, Little Street opened in January. The location suits our needs, as people can park conveniently outside without charge and it’s quiet and safe here. Our new cafe will offer hot drinks and light snacks, so families can stay and enjoy the space. In the summer, we can open the café terrace and older siblings can take advantage of the recreation grounds.”

FLOORS OF BEDS

FINAL SPRING SAVINGS THE SESSIONS “We have four sessions each day. We recommend booking as we limit the number of children. We don’t allow the play centre to be overcrowded as that takes away some of the fun, especially for the younger children. If they want to push a shopping trolley and we only have three, a big group would limit their opportunities.” “So, we keep the group small and nobody needs to wait long for anything. If they can’t shop, they can always build a wall or make a pizza!”

As the country recovered from the Second World War, Les Tomlin opened his first bed shop in Worthing. Within weeks, founding partner Jones had walked away, but the shop sign had been made, so Les carried on at 90 Chapel Road. Having established himself as a successful businessman, Les took on other ventures, most notably The Top Hat. The nightclub hosted musical acts and entertainment, including leading rock ‘n’ roll stars such as Gene Vincent. Les also became involved in local government, serving as a councillor before becoming Mayor of Worthing. Son Richard Tomlin then took the reins and the shop moved to a threestorey unit at Chapel House, where Worthing Bedding Centre continues to this day. The Horsham Bedding Centre became the second Jones & Tomlin branch in 1991, taking over the site of another bed shop, Hughes.

Tim Ellis says British brands like Enchanted House are among the world’s best

Derek Mclaughlin managed the store for 25 successful years until he lost his battle with cancer. Richard Tomlin remains CEO of Jones & Tomlin, with son Adam now Managing Director of the business, with a Chichester store adding to the company’s portfolio.

Best of British Tim Ellis has worked at Horsham Bedding Centre for 10 years, the last two as manager. Despite increasing competition, both locally and through the internet, the business continues to thrive. Tim said: “In the town centre, there are several outlets selling beds, so Horsham is a bedding hub. Even with that competition, having the largest store in town and offering free delivery and disposal means we tend to be a favoured choice.“ “Despite the sign on the side of our building, many people don't realise that we have four floors of beds, suiting every budget. I cannot say with certainty that we are the biggest bed shop in the country, but we are definitely one of them.” “Many outlets, particularly online businesses, focus on memory foam mattresses, but we’re finding that most people appreciate the value of a traditional mattress, which is what we do best. It’s a little-known fact that we make the best beds in the world in this country. VI Spring, Hypnos, Somnus, Manor Rose and Enchanted House are all superb, independent, family-run British bed firms.” “As well as having superior products, they offer flexibility. Whereas some stores only sell certain brands that are rigid in what they make and not interested in a bespoke bed, we can

do anything. If you want an eight-foot round bed, you can have one!”

Positive Reviews Perhaps the biggest change over 28 years in business has been the growth of the internet. In this department, Horsham Bedding Centre has moved with the times, with customers often citing positive Google reviews as a reason for visiting. “We’ve always been known for our customer service, especially against the internet and big multi-national companies,” says Tim. “But we really do go over and above at times. Our prices are just as good, if not better, but excellent customer service is what stands out these days.” “One of the reasons we receive so many recommendations is that we do everything possible to please the customer. Last year, we started asking for Google reviews and received 100 by Christmas. We regularly have people flying over from other countries to visit our Horsham

branch, which we’re very proud of. We see huge demand from overseas, such is the quality of British beds.” “We have a good reputation, as we’re straight with people. Most customers can see through huge discounts. We have clearance sales, where we sell old stock or display models for large discounts. Aside from that, a reputable retailer won’t sell a genuine £2,000 mattress at half price!”

budget, but we don't go down that route. If you possibly can, you should be spending about £60 on a quality pillow, considering how much time you spend sleeping. Cheaper pillows offer a false economy. “We are bedding specialists, with the best products the industry can offer. So, if you’re looking for a 1000 thread count bed sheet, we have it. We also have some of the finest luxury beds in the world, with prices up to £30,000. “There’s very little we don’t know about any beds. It is that kind of range and expertise that has served us well for generations and continues to do so.”

Offering Quality Despite having four floors of bedding and an extensive linen department, there is one thing you can’t buy at Horsham Bedding Centre: a cheap pillow! Tim said: “Sometimes, people come in looking for a £5 pillow or a duvet for £10, as that is what they sell for at supermarkets. That’s fine, if people have a tight

Fencers En-Garde! Jerry: Horsham Fencing Club was founded in 1990, run in parallel with an adult education course at Forest School. The course was discontinued, but the club moved to Millais, with coach Mark Kennard guiding us for 24 years before stepping down in 2017. Will: There are three fencing disciplines: foil, épée and sabre. All three are Olympic sports and require very different skills. To have someone dominating in all three is extremely rare. Andy: We do have some light foil training, but the focus is épée. Points can only be scored with the tip of the sword. You can hit your opponent anywhere on the face and body, from head to toe. In foil, you can only score by hitting the torso with the tip. With

Horsham Fencing Club attracts members of all ages thanks to its relaxed atmosphere and a patient approach to coaching. AAH found out more from coach Will Miller, chair Jerry Lowen, master-at-arms Andy Watson, regular fencers Harry Williams and Jo Goddard, as well as Sarah Rovetto-Stamp, whose son Adam is the club’s youngest member…

the sabre, anything above the waist scores and you can use both the tip and edges of the sword to score points. Jerry: The rules of foil include a ‘right of way’ system. So, if you are defending, you must first ‘parry’ your opponent’s attack before striking. It means that a duel requires judges as it can be complicated. Personally, I believe épée to be the purest form of the sport.

Will: This is a sociable club. There isn't any pressure for members to reach a high level. I've been fencing for 30 years and still compete at an international standard in veteran competitions. We have other fencers who could do very well at competitions too. However, most come here simply to learn a great sport and enjoy themselves. Jerry: We host an internal round-robin competition, just for fun. Fencers are given a handicap

by the coach depending on ability, so anyone can win. Some members will take part in the Sussex épée competition and there are other tournaments at county, regional and national level. Members have opportunities to compete, but it is not a key aim of the club. Harry: I took part in my first tournament just before Christmas and will enter another in March. The first one went okay, as I didn't come last! I enjoy the competitive side as it motivates me to improve. But on club nights, everyone is friendly, relaxed and respectful of one another’s ability. Jo: There’s a pleasant atmosphere and we’re welcoming to novice fencers. Competition has never

been at the heart of this club, even if we’re all serious when it comes to a duel. I was a member here for 21 years, qualifying for the South of England Championships during that time, before taking a year out. I returned as I really missed it! Harry: I joined a year ago, as I stopped playing rugby and wanted to find another sport. I took to fencing immediately, although it's harder than I thought it would be. I knew it was tactical, but it’s physically demanding too. I'm young and quite fit, but this really takes it out of me. Jo: Fencing is hard work! You need great stamina. Every duel is intense with a lot of leg and arm work. But it is one of the few sports where people of all ages and gender can compete together. Andy: Because of the mix of competitors, you must adapt to your opponent. I’m very tall, so I’m a big target in a discipline where you can hit anywhere on the body! My advantage is that my arm reach is an inch or two longer than most and opponents need to overcome

that. The clever ones anticipate my attacks and strike me on the arm before my sword strikes their chest or shoulder. There’s a lot of tactical awareness involved, although luck can play a part too. Jo: I’m known to be quick, as I'm short, agile and try to force a close duel. My style would probably better suit the sabre, as you can use the cutting edge of the blade as well as the tip to score, whereas épée is perhaps advantageous to those with a long reach. Harry: I use a French style pommel grip, rather than the pistol grip on most swords. This gives me an extra few inches of reach and I have adapted my style to use it. I tend to keep as much distance from my opponent as possible and go for openings when they present themselves. Usually though, I get carried away and end up attacking more than defending! Andy: In an épée duel, it is only the first strike that counts. The sword is triangular shape and the tip has a pressure spring. This tip is compressed upon a good

contact, with wires running from the tip and down the sword to an electrical system that registers every point. You might take satisfaction by striking the mask, but it doesn’t win you any more points. Your opponent could hit the end of your toe and the result is just the same!

Centuries ago, duels were fought to the death, but nowadays fencing is safer than cricket. The strength of materials used in the mask, jacket, gloves, right down to the breeches, has improved over time. Traditionally, a fencer’s uniform is white and an instructor’s is black.

Jerry: The electronics register who struck first, but if a counterstrike lands within 1/25 of a second of the first strike, it will also count. This is surprisingly common, such is the speed of modern fencing.

Sarah: My son, Adam, is only nine-years-old. His grandfather, Francesco, was a well-known fencer in Italy and was close to being selected for the Italian Olympic squad. So, when we found out that the Horsham club would make an exception and accept Adam at such a young age, he was thrilled. He is a small but feisty competitor. When he duels with Will, it looks a bit like Darth Vadar taking on a young Jedi because of the black and white uniforms!

Andy: An earth wire ensures that a point isn’t scored if the tip strikes the sword or grip. But there have been cases when people have tried to cheat. In one famous case at the 1976 Olympics, a Soviet fencer created a switch within the grip that triggered points even when he hadn’t hit anything!

The speed of modern fencing makes duels short but physically demanding

Will: Even though épée involves the full body, it is a safe sport.

He leads a course for beginners once a term and this is a good introduction to fencing. Will: During the first couple of lessons, we concentrate on footwork. But we work with swords from the outset. In the past, people had the idea of developing technique before picking up a sword, but I find people lose interest that way. So, we use the épée early on, passing on techniques that have been handed down since the ‘to the death’ days of duelling. Jerry: We do see people of all ages. CONSERVING CARTOONS OF FAMED SCHOOL MURALS Seven ‘cartoon’ sketches by renowned artist and craftsman Sir Frank Brangwyn have been extensively conserved. The sketches were donated by Brangwyn to Christ’s Hospital School in 1930, after work had been completed on his mural sequence, still a focal point of the School’s Chapel almost 100 years later. Thanks in part to Horsham District Year of Culture funding, the sketches have been conserved over a sixmonth period.

WHO WAS BRANGWYN?

He received greater recognition abroad than in Britain, where his work has largely fallen from public and artistic favour. Thanks to an extensive recent reassessment of his work by Dr Libby Horner, appreciation of his accomplishments is rising. Dr Horner’s definitive study, Christ’s Hospital Murals, was published 50 years after the artist’s death.

‘Brangwyn’s 16 panels at Christ’s Hospital were initially met with a mixed response.’

Brangwyn (1867-1956) was one of the 20th century’s leading artist and craftsmen. He produced over 12,000 murals, prints, paintings and illustrations during a prodigious career, also designing decorative arts including ceramics, glassware, furniture, carpets and stained glass windows. He had a painting accepted by the Royal Academy (RA) when he was 18 years old, although it was not until 1919 that he became a full member. When the RA held its first retrospective exhibition of a living artist, it was given to Brangwyn, then aged 52.

Frank Brangwyn’s significance to Horsham stems from his 1912 commission to paint a sequence of 16 panels in The Chapel at Christ’s Hospital School, illustrating the spread of Christianity around the world. The commission took over 10 years to complete and several years later, Brangwyn gave the School seven preparatory chalk drawings for the murals.

CONSERVING CARTOONS These delicately cartoon studies had fallen into a vulnerable state of disrepair, but the Horsham Year of Culture and Christ’s Hospital School funded their conservation.

Cartoon for CH mural 4 St. Paul Shipwrecked (above) Large ensemble composition showing a wrecked ship and survivors and rescuers coming ashore. Central is a man being helped ashore by two men. Scene described in Acts, Chapter 27, 44: “In Damascus, the disciple Ananias restored Saul's sight and he was baptized, taking the name of Paul. Paul was attacked in Jerusalem for preaching against the enactments of the Jewish law, but appealed for a trial before Caesar at Rome (being a Roman citizen). En route to Rome, the ship ran aground at Malta. The soldiers voted to kill the prisoners but the centurion intervened because he wanted to save Paul, and allowed people to swim to shore.

Cartoon for Mural No. 2: The Martyrdom of St. Stephen (left) A large ensemble composition with a male figure apparently being stoned by the crowd. This work depicts words from Acts, Chapter 7, 60: “St. Stephen (d. c35) was one of seven deacons appointed by the apostles to help with the ministry of teaching and caring for the poor. Unfortunately, his success and miracle making made him unpopular with members of the synagogue. Stephen's undoubted ability to answer his detractors and his claim that they had killed Christ just as their fathers had killed the prophets, enraged the elders. He was thrown out of Jerusalem and stoned, the cloaks of those taking part being left in the care of a young man called Saul who condoned the stoning.

TARGET TIMBER SYSTEMS Traditional Values using Modern Methods of Construction

The cartoons were taken out of their 1930’s mounts and frames in October 2018 and carefully transported to paper conservator Sarah Deere, based in Hove. She spent four months meticulously removing dirt including hair, organic debris, straw and wood particles, with “clumping” of raised fibres and dirt mixing with the paper and chalk. Framer Nicholas Gentle then cleaned the original uneven thick glass, only replacing one panel which had broken. He re-waxed the wooden frames and cleaned the 1930’s mounts, which were kept for their rare bevelled cut apertures and watercolour trim borders. New acid-free, museum-standard barrier board layers were inserted, reducing the risk of tears and other damage.

If you are a Property Developer or Builder looking at Timber Frame structures for Houses and Apartments, or a family looking for their dream Self-build Home Target Timber Systems are here to help. We offer a professional service which includes fully certified design and engineering, supply and erect of factory insulated panels, engineered floor beams and floor deck, roof trusses and bracing along with full chain of custody certification.”

The School made the conscious decision not to replace the glass, mounts and frames, which might have been more aesthetically pleasing to modern eyes, but would constitute restoration rather than conservation.

Plenty of mortgage options for Over 65’s

Just because you’re over 65, it doesn’t mean you can’t have a mortgage! But sometimes it can be harder to get a mortgage that is right and affordable, due to age restrictive terms, once you reach a certain milestone with the high street lenders. Often, retired people have managed their finances successfully over the years and enter retirement mortgage free. At the same time, many, whilst having no mortgage, also suffer from reduced income. Others may wish to continue their mortgage past normal lender retirement age, whilst they may still be working. There are schemes where equity can be turned into a mortgage (not necessarily equity release) and where off-spring may be able to assist with the repayments in order to secure and protect their inheritance whilst also ensuring a comfortable retirement for their parents. This is not right for everyone, but it is certainly worth talking to a qualified adviser to review all possibilities.

DIVISIVE MURALS Interestingly, Brangwyn’s 16 panels were initially met with a mixed response. George Allen (Old Blue and Clerk at CH from 1933 - 1946) wrote that the murals “produce no religious atmosphere.” Bizarrely, the School has almost nothing to say in its Council minutes about the murals. Brangwyn interpreted the brief and the titles he was given in his own inimitable way. But we can only speculate on the effect such a modern, earthy, non-traditional

evocation of the Bible’s stories might have had on the senior staff, teachers and their young wards. Brangwyn’s early training from William Morris, combined with his own lack of education, influenced the almost complete lack of symbolism in his work. His belief in social inclusion, combined with a lack of regard for figures in authority, might have appealed to some of the pupils at the time. He sprinkles hints of humour into the murals and whilst his cast of 150 shows generic historical dress, shaky Biblical accuracy, a distinct lack of women and a few

According to some lender reports, there are an estimated 600,000 people due to come to maturity on their interest only mortgage by 2020, aged over 60. Many will probably have no way of repaying their interest only mortgage. Some will have endowments that didn’t meet expectations, or maybe the house has not increased in price as much as hoped. Stricter mortgage rules and lending criteria has made it harder for those over 65 wanting to re-mortgage. However, despite the high street being almost a closed entity, there are plenty of other options (not that your current lender is likely to advise them - they just want their money back!) The lender has the right to request repayment of their loan at end of the mortgage term. If the customer has no way of repaying this and has just continued to pay the interest over the last twenty-five years or so, they face the possibility of having their home repossessed or being forced to move out. On the high street, the end of the loan term will normally hit those aged between 65 to 70. This is not new news but does highlight that many people are still burying their head in the sand and hoping this will go away or the lender may be lenient. There are a number of lenders that recognise that 'normal retirement' age is no longer set in stone and people continue to work long in to later life. These are not high street names and as such, rates may be slightly higher than the big super tanker, large volume producing household names that we are used to. But at least they will consider helping out and could keep you in your family home!

ARTWORK EXHIBITED An exhibition at Christ’s Hospital Museum, held from 23 April 2019 - 27 April 2020, charts the conservation journey of all seven cartoons and places them in the context of the murals in the chapel. The

exhibition builds on the work of Dr Libby Horner and celebrates Brangwyn’s achievements. Supported by loans from private collections and the re-publication of Dr Horner's seminal book on the murals, this showcase forms part of the Brangwyn public events programme. A series of talks, tours, music and drama events bring Brangwyn, the artist and the man, to life, illuminating the subjects and stories behind his 16 murals and corresponding

cartoons, as well as other works around the world. Most of these events are free to book. For information visit: www.chmuseum.org.uk and visit the What's On page. Horsham Museum hosts an exhibition, Brangwyn in Horsham, on now until 23 March. www.horshammuseum.org Many thanks to Laura Kidner of Christ’s Hospital Museum and to HDC’s Horsham Museum for providing text and images.

There was a time when the nuthatch wasn’t considered a ‘garden bird’ at all, due to its preference for woodland habitats featuring large oaks, but over the years they’ve frequented our feeders more and more – lucky us! While it’s likely you’ll encounter one of these acrobatic birds on a woodland walk – they are the only British bird to move up and down a tree trunk and you’ll surely hear their loud, high-pitched “swee swee swee” call – observing them at the feeding station is where you’ll really see their feisty character. Though similar in size to a great tit, the nuthatch is a little bit bolshy and quite prepared to stand its ground, chasing off even larger birds. They are stunning in appearance, with blue-grey upperparts, rusty yellow underneath and a bold, black eye stripe that elongates their long wedge of a beak. The beak itself is an important tool for the nuthatch, who uses it to hammer open nuts, pry open bits of bark in search of insects, and plaster mud around old woodpecker holes until they’re just the right size to squeeze through and nest in.

Cartoon for Chapel mural No. 13: St. Wilfred First Bishop of Selsey Colour Chalk Drawing, 1913-1923 Squared for enlargement and transfer to canvas, St Wilfred is credited with introducing Christianity to Pagan Sussex.

The treecreeper is another trunkscaling species and you’re unlikely to encounter one in your garden, they’re a challenge even in the woods! They too shimmy up big tree trunks and pick at the bark for tiny insects using their thin, down-curved beaks. They press their long tail against the trunk to balance themselves and if they realise they’ve been spotted, they’ll freeze and let their mottled brown plumage camouflage them.
