Swans on the River Adur. The photos of the seal were rubbish!

Notes from the Editor

The Daily Struggle of Keeping the Kids Active

A

s parents of two boys, my wife and I wage an almost constant war against mobile phones and the Xbox.

Often, it’s a battle I feel we’re losing. When we’re busy, hours fly by and our sons exploit the lack of parental attention by sitting in front of a screen. I’m especially frustrated by how much time my youngest son spends playing games. Like many children, he grew up fascinated by the natural world, with dinosaurs and animals dominating his bedroom. He subscribed to National Geographic Kids, annoyed experts at the Natural History Museum with persistent questions, and would even wake me at 6am on Sundays to drive to Pulborough Brooks to see adders basking in the morning sun. He still enjoys fishing and football, so he’s fairly active. But still, arguments about the amount of time he spends on a phone is more-or-less a daily occurrence. Among Us is the latest phone-game craze. It’s some sort of murder mystery that looks a bit like Pacman... To force him outdoors, one Saturday in September, I decided to take him kayaking. We’ve done it before on family holidays and enjoyed it. A lot of people have got into paddleboarding since lockdown, but personally, I can’t see the appeal! Maybe I’m worried it’ll give me a bad back... My plan was to drive to Cuckmere Haven. We went for a walk along the Seven Sisters in the summer and saw people kayaking on the river towards the beach, and it looked like fun. So, I worked the Google and was surprised

when something popped up locally. A company called The Kayak Coach in Ashurst is based on the banks of the River Adur. I booked a couple of kayaks (avoiding the tandem option as we’d spend the whole time complaining about the other’s lack of effort!) and headed out. On the advice of the chap who handed us our life jacket, helmet and hand sanitiser, we rowed north towards Partridge Green, rather than south towards Bramber and the sea. He said it was the more scenic route, although it meant rowing against the tide. It was indeed beautiful. We weaved around willow trees drooping over the river and encountered kestrels and herons. Passing swans with cygnets in tow, we stopped, expecting a hostile reception. But they passed by nonplussed, obviously used to the company. We continued up-river, passing a herd of cows lined up at the bank as if they were considering crossing it. My son joked about how his older brother would react, as he’s terrified of cows. I laughed nervously, thinking that if the cows were spooked into a stampede, we’d be in trouble. I blame the media. In the old days, you didn’t hear about people being injured by cows unless it happened locally. Nowadays, such stories appear regularly, and the result is a generation of kids who are scared of cows. We carried on and came upon a fork in the river, where I thought I saw something rise above the surface. “Nick, hold on a minute!” I said. “I’ve just seen an otter!”

5

We waited and were amazed when a seal poked its head up next to our kayaks. It splashed around and proceeded to linger for several minutes. I filmed it on my phone briefly, while two walkers sat down on the bank, opened a flask and enjoyed the show too. Further along the river, a dog walker asked if we’d seen the seal. Apparently, she’s a regular visitor and has been named ‘Sally’ by the locals. The seal, that is. On our return leg, I relayed the news to a boy paddleboarding. He scrunched his nose up as if to say, “You think I’m falling for that?” We had such a good time that Nick suggested we start kayaking regularly. It would be a good way for us to keep active and also fuel his interest in wildlife. So, when we returned home, I started searching online for kayaks, new or second hand. Naturally, this caused more family discussion. We calculated that we’d need to go out at least a dozen times before buying a kayak became more cost-effective than hiring. Yet at the same time, we’re not a family that can regularly afford to spend £50 on two kayaks, as much fun as it is. “And what about a roof rack?” noted my wife, although I pretended I’d factored that in already. “And life jackets? And where are we going to put the bloody things? We can’t fit the bikes and the outdoor cushions in the shed as it is!” Nick came in and tried to give his opinion on the matter. “Stay out of it, Nick! Go play on your phone or something!”

NEWS ROUND-UP

MONTHLY NEWS FROM AROUND THE HORSHAM DISTRICT

Horsham District Council has produced an alternative plan for a controversial new development in Rookwood. Its initial plan sparked a public outcry, as any development on the Council-owned golf course at Rookwood would not only deprive the town of more green space, but impact wildlife at the adjacent Warnham Nature Reserve. The Council finds itself between a rock and a hard place; the Government has mandated a steep change in housing delivery and HDC must allocate sites for

over 1,000 new homes every year in its Local Plan. If this demand isn’t met, the Council fears up to 1,700 homes could be imposed on the District, as potential developers present their case not to HDC, but to government-appointed Planning Inspectors instead. This could result in fewer contributions towards infrastructure and local amenities too. Having consulted on its first plan for Rookwood, the Council is now considering an alternative scheme that it says will open up the area to wider recreational use while

enhancing wildlife and biodiversity. The latest option reduces the number of new houses to 750 - 870, with 35% being “affordable housing”. Houses would be focused on areas of low biodiversity along the managed fairways of the golf course, with existing trees and sensitive corridors such as Boldings Brook and the Riverside Walk protected. Additional buffer zones would be created to protect and extend the Nature Reserve. The next version of the Local Plan will be published in early 2021.

Windlesham House, an independent day and boarding prep school in Washington, has a new Headmaster. Ben Evans takes over from long-standing predecessor, Richard Foster. Having spent eight years as Headmaster at Edge Grove in Hertfordshire and prior to that, as Head of The British School in Colombo, Sri Lanka, Ben is excited about the scope of opportunity. “My immediate goal is to continue to get to know the children and teachers and to understand the character and personality of the school’s richly diverse community.” www.windlesham.com

New figures from West Sussex County Council show that 53% of items we throw away are now recycled. Government targets mean councils must now be recycling at least half of their household waste. WSCC is encouraging residents to continue the positive steps as it works towards future targets of 55% by 2025 and 65% by 2035. To help boost recycling rates further, residents are reminded to keep household recycling clean (free from leftovers), dry (soggy paper/cardboard can’t be recycled) and loose (not tied up in plastic bags). Billingshurst Parish Council is looking to replace the facilities at the skate park at Jubilee Fields. The ramps are past their best and increasingly costly to maintain, and the Parish Council wants users of the site to help choose a replacement. Professional skate park designers have produced six possible designs for a new, larger facility with steel framework protecting wooden ramps. The designs have been posted on the Parish Council website and users have until 30 October to comment. www.billingshurst.gov.uk

Representatives of Christ’s Hospital School and West Sussex County Council at the upgraded Downs Link site

A previously disused section of the Downs Link on the old Guildford Railway Line behind Christ’s Hospital station has been opened. The upgrade comes after a collaborative project between Christ’s Hospital School and West Sussex County Council. Since the creation of the Downs Link, there has not been an available link along the old railway line to Christ’s Hospital, so anyone using the route had to take to the road for 1.9km. Now, anyone on the Downs Link between Mill Lane and CH Station can do so safely off-road. The works to the ‘missing’ section included repairs to two bridges. Attendees to the socially-distanced opening included the School’s Head Teacher Simon Reid and COO Nick Tesseyman, as well as WSCC Cabinet Members Deborah Urquhart and Roger Elkins, and County Councillors Amanda and Nigel Jupp. The Guildford Branch Line was closed as part of the Beeching Cuts, with the last train running on 14 July 1965. westsussex.gov.uk/downslink The Co-operative Food store in Broadbridge Heath, which opened on 9 September, has already made a difference to the community by donating £500 worth of goods to the Horsham District food bank. The contribution will form part of essential food parcels. The store, part of Southern Co-op, includes a permanent food bank drop-off point. Phil Craven, Store Manager in Wickhurst Square, said: “During the pandemic, I have been working at one of our sister stores and have seen the affect the food bank has on the community. So, it feels significant that we've provided 17 new jobs and can help out families in need via the food bank.” The Probus Club of Horsham Weald held a socially distanced handover ceremony as incoming President Mike Collingbourne took the reins from John Connold. Despite restrictions, the Club has managed to keep its membership of retired businessmen and their partners in touch through Zoom meetings and other pursuits. Country walks, golf and tenpin bowling have functioned in small friendship groups, with other activities to re-start once restrictions are lifted. For details, search ‘Horsham Probus Weald’ online.

Horsham Fireworks Night (©Toby Phillips/AAH 2011)

Horsham District Council is thanking pubs, cafes and restaurants for their efforts in making their businesses Covid-secure, while reminding them to remain vigilant to suppress the spread of the virus. The Council is recommending that businesses in hospitality use the NHS Test and Trace App, launched nationwide on 24 September. Resources for businesses can be found at https://covid19.nhs.uk/information-forbusinesses.html

Inevitably, Horsham Fireworks Night has been postponed. The event was scheduled to take place at Horsham Sports Club, Cricketfield Road on Saturday 24 October, but has fallen victim to Covid-19. The venue was also forced to cancel The Big Gig in June, and was also looking forward to the return of County Cricket after an absence of several years. In a statement on the Horsham Fireworks Night Facebook page, the

organisers wrote: “Due to our dedication to being socially responsible at this difficult time and the uncertainty around whether social distancing measures will have eased by October end, we have made the decision to postpone the event.” Spare a thought too for Aurora Fireworks, the local company that supplies many of the region’s leading Horsham firework displays. www.aurorafireworks.co.uk

West Sussex County Council has given the go-ahead for a new fire station and training centre in Horsham. The station and rescue service training centre at Highwood will cost £20.8m, and will include facilities that immerse firefighters in real-life operational situations, making them better equipped to keep communities safe. WSCC will now submit a planning application for approval. If granted, it will take about 18 months for building to be completed.

The Midnight Walk in Horsham is a popular fundraiser (©Toby Phillips Photography/STCH)

St Catherine’s Hospice has delayed its plans for a new site at Pease Pottage as its income has been severely impacted. Covid-19 has hit the hospice’s fundraising efforts hard, with a drop of around £1.5 million predicted for the year, amounting to about 15% of its income. Giles Tomsett, Chief Executive of STCH said: “As soon as lockdown began, we took immediate action, including furloughing many of our staff. Like all hospices across the UK, we benefitted from a payment from HM Treasury, which covered our running costs for three months. These actions saved us money and bought us time to work with our Board of Trustees, developing a longer-term response which is essential to secure the future of end of life care in your community. Because Covid-19 has severely hit our income, we’ll have to limit how we deliver our

N J Simpkins

activities. Sadly, this includes reducing the number of people in our wonderful team. It is difficult to make changes like this at our hospice, which has done such crucial work for terminally ill and bereaved people in our community over nearly 40 years. But sadly, it’s unavoidable if we want to make sure that St Catherine’s keeps operating successfully for another 40 years. Throughout the pandemic, we have been as focused as ever on helping local people who are facing the very worst of times while supporting the wider NHS, and I want to thank everyone who has supported us.” The hospice’s fundraising events include the Midnight Walk in Horsham and Dragon Boat Races at Tilgate Park. AAH will publish details of future events in the News Round-Up when they’re available. www.stch.org.uk

Having previously written factual books on Sussex, as well as school textbooks, Washington author Kevin Newman has published his first novel, Beef Every Day but No Latin. It is based on the true story of the only formation of a school on record by a minor and is set predominantly at Claremont House (now Claremont Guest House) in Hove. In 1925, 11-year-old James Bernard Clifton set up his own school. Complete with a one-legged swimming teacher, a bookthrowing headmaster and air raids, the story tells how Clifton managed to do what no other British child has done. He decided the timetable, recruited staff and created a unique school where pupils had beef every day but no Latin. The book is published by The Real Press, priced £7.99 (£2.99 on Kindle) from Steyning Bookshop or www.therealpress.co.uk and www.allinclusivehistory.org Horsham District Council’s Economic Development team has launched its Local Enterprise and Apprenticeship Programme (LEAP) small business grants funding for the fourth year. Over 100 small and micro businesses have successfully secured a grant in the three previous years of the scheme. The LEAP scheme has £86,000 to be distributed to businesses across the Horsham District between now and May 2021. If you are a new business of less than 12 months and have less than 20 employees, you can apply for up to £2,000, which you will need to match with additional funds. www.horsham.gov.uk/business/ business-funding

GOODFELLOW

PRESTIGIOUS ACCOLADE FOR DIRECTOR AT SLINFOLD VETS

M

ark Maltman has become a Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS). The fellowship has existed for over 140 years, with the aim of advancing and developing clinical and professional standards, and the award is considered a rare and prestigious accolade.

Mark, Clinical Director at Maltman Cosham in Slinfold, has been recognised for “meritorious contributions to clinical practice”. As well as being a veterinary surgeon and clinician for 23 years, Mark has been a treasurer for a veterinary society, contributed to multiple publications, and acted as an external examiner for veterinary certificates. Mark said: “The RCVS has broadened its scope to recognise all aspects of veterinary practice. However, it is still relatively rare for someone at a ‘first opinion’ practice to be awarded a Fellowship. To be recognised by the RCVS requires an extensive portfolio of evidence built over many years, so it’s a monumental honour that very few in the industry receive. I must add that my staff here are fantastic and this accolade compliments the whole practice, as I could never have achieved it alone.”

RESURGENT PRACTICE Due to Covid-19, the award presentation was held via the video sharing platform, Zoom. However, Mark had little time to be concerned about the anti-climactic nature, as his business rebuilds after the disruption of the pandemic. “At the start of lockdown, the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons imposed restrictions, with only urgent work to be undertaken,” said Mark. “We had to cut routine work including vaccines, neutering and non-emergency dentistry. As a result, business was lean, although the furlough scheme allowed us to operate with about 50% of staff.” “Eventually, the routine work could restart, which was vital as non-urgent matters soon become far more pressing. We have been fully operational since July, initially working in two segregated teams to avoid crosscontamination. That meant if anyone fell ill, one team could isolate and we could still see our customers. It was a stressful and demanding time.

EXPANSION PLANS

“My staff are fantastic and this accolade compliments the whole practice, as I could never have achieved it alone.” “It’s been confusing for clients too, although there have been silver linings. Since re-opening, pet owners have been waiting in the car park and our vets are consulting with them outside. We’ve discovered this is often better for an animal’s wellbeing, as some become stressed by the hustle and bustle of the waiting room. If you’d have told me a year ago that we’d be meeting customers in the car park in full protective outfits, I’d have thought it a crazy idea; what terrible service! Yet it has allowed us to see more clients.” “People had concerns about animals spreading Covid too, with cats persistently in the news. The main risk is that a pet could be a fomite carrier, like door handles. This could be mitigated relatively easily, as vets are well used to bio-security measures and preventing disease transmission between patients and animals.”

This year has seen considerable staff changes with Josie Cosham - who founded the business with Mark - leaving to focus on raising her family. Maltman Cosham is now in partnership with Independent Vetcare as it embarks on an ambitious expansion programme. “Being part of a group of practices has been beneficial to us and our customers,” says Mark. “A fully independent practice would have struggled to survive in recent times. It’s allowed me to continue to run the practice with little interference, yet with an additional level of protection. “I haven’t given up hope of Josie returning in future, but now if anything should happen to me, the staff and clients would be well looked after.” Before lockdown, plans were submitted to expand the clinic. In recent months, the application has been approved and the project is out to tender. Once completed, Maltman Cosham will have a dedicated consulting suite with five rooms, while the current building will be for hospitalised patients and surgery, with not one but two operating theatres.

SENSE OF SPELL

HUMBLE APPROACH DOES THE TRICK FOR MAGIC MARTY

A

s Magic Marty, Billingshurst magician Martin Sanderson has conjured up many memorable birthday parties.

on a velvet mat. By my last year at school, I was practicing for hours every day, learning the history of magic as well as developing sleight of hand skills.

But he is also known for his corporate magic, with celebrities among those to have been bewildered by his visual tricks and sharp comedy. In recent years, Martin has suffered with illness. Yet far from holding him back, he’s achieved a remarkable athletic milestone. Martin tells his story in his own words...

My uncle, Harry Bowes, was a ventriloquist in Hartlepool, where I grew up. He had scary wooden puppets and performed at working men's clubs on the variety circuit. He would also perform for me and my cousins, although I was the only one who took much interest. He incorporated magic into his act and when he first made a coin appear behind my ear, I was amazed. I thought, “I’ll be rich!” My uncle saw I was keen and taught me basic tricks. I would learn them during the week and if it was perfect, he’d then show me another. Gradually, I developed a routine. Magic was like a drug to me. I was addicted and spent hours thinking about it. When I was 12, a careers advisor at school asked me what I wanted to be and when I told her, she called me a “stupid boy” and sent me out the room! I didn't understand, as I knew I’d be a magician!

Martin’s first publicity shot at the age of 14

I repeated old-fashioned gags that really weren’t suitable for a child. I was inspired by variety acts and jokes were full of innuendo. One trick involved three pieces of rope of different lengths, eventually tying together. I said to a room of pensioners, “This is the little rope, this is the medium and this big one’s from my Indian friend, Chief What-a-Whopper.” I didn’t always know what the jokes meant. I spent my newspaper round money on magic tricks, which arrived through the door via postal order. I would practice and embed the good ones in my act. When I should have been revising for exams, I would be laying out cards

After a year of practice, my uncle suggested that I try performing to an audience, as working with people and reading their reactions was important. So, I did a magic show for children who were not much younger than I was. I rushed through my tricks as I was too excited. But I was handed five pounds and couldn't believe it. I was being paid to do something I loved! We didn't have a telephone at home, so I walked for miles to clubs and care homes across Hartlepool, introducing myself as Magic Marty. I offered to do free shows to build experience and make a name for myself. I even wore silver sequins and a bow-tie. In one care home, people were dozing off during my act, but I got through it!

23

Today, magicians can learn tricks online. Within months, they launch a website and promote themselves as magicians. But they haven't done the groundwork needed to understand the traditions and psychology of magic, or learn about audience management. You can’t be rude or embarrass someone excessively, as your target could be anyone – perhaps a company boss surrounded by his employees. People buy people, and if they like you, you’ll be successful. I often talk for several minutes, leaning on comedy or selfdeprecating humour to establish myself in a group, before hitting them with a trick. If you act high and mighty or fake an aura of mystique, it will unravel. Be humble. After leaving school, I stacked shelves at a supermarket and found weekend work at Ned Kelly's themed-restaurant. I was paid £2 perhour to do magic. It wasn’t about the money; I just loved performing. I met someone who owned bars in Majorca who told me that his customers had to wait a long time before being served food and drink. I said, “What you need is a magician!” Days later,, I was flying from Newcastle to Palma Nova. After returning home, I saw an advert in The Stage about auditions for the 1992 summer season in Jersey. That led to me working in the Channel Islands as part of a cabaret show

Magic Marty has hosted hundreds of children’s birthday parties

headlined by Stuart Gillies, who had a hit in 1973 with ‘Amanda’. There were dancers too and one was very beautiful. We started dating and have been married since 1996. Sue became part of my magic show. We included elements of illusion, so I would chop off her head, levitate her or even miraculously produce her from a cage of fire! We compiled a show reel which landed us both a job with CTC Cruises. We sailed to the Norwegian Fjords, Italy and Spain, and later passed through the Suez Canal to Australia and Pacific islands. No sooner had we returned when we were heading off on another sixmonth cruise. We've been fortunate to see the world before settling down.

The cross-in-palm trick works wonders at special occasions

I managed to land a residency at Tramp in Mayfair. I was booked for a children’s party hosted by the club manager. It went well and I mooted the idea of having a close-up magician at his nightclub. He invited me along for a try-out and I ended up there for five years. It wasn’t easy, as I was working until 3am, mingling with millionaires and celebrities. Some of them insist on knowing how a trick is done, but as a member of the Magic Circle, I can’t reveal my secrets! Drake, the rapper, has visited Tramp and I’ve performed for him five times. We got on well. People gravitate around him, but he appreciates magic and I’ve performed for him one-to-one for an hour. He’s a good guy and

24

sent me and my family VIP tickets to his London concert. Sometimes, a routine takes several minutes, but the clientele at Tramp normally require something snappy. You might only have their attention for 30 seconds. So, I tend to start with a flash of fire, combining this trick with another where a cross appears on the palm of your hand. It amazes people, as it’s visual. The trick has got more reaction than anything I’ve perfected after 20 years of sleight of hand practice! At an event at St James' Palace, I was given permission to perform at a table including Prince Charles and The Duchess of Cornwall.

Martin also performs magic for weddings, special occasions and corporate events

“Drake, the Canadian rapper, appreciates magic and I’ve performed for him one-to-one for an hour.”

Prince Charles was in conversation and I decided it would be rude to interrupt, as the other guests were everyday workers engaged in a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to talk to the future King. So, I did the routine away from him, but he gave me a nod of approval, as he is also a member of the Magic Circle. The following day, I was at a children’s party, fighting for my life! Not many magicians can transition from corporate to children's work. Some use the same child-friendly tone in the corporate world and it doesn’t work. You hear terrible stories about magicians at birthday parties too. They’re always portrayed badly – usually as depressed alcoholics - on television! Working with children isn't easy and at first I doubted I could create an entertaining two-hour show. But you divide the time with bubbles, games, comedy and even plate-spinning. Occasionally, a party doesn’t go that well and remind you that you should never be complacent. You learn from those days! Some in the industry look down at children's magicians. But corporate work has its ups and downs, as we’ve seen this year. Children's parties are more consistent and pay the bills. I’ve seen very good corporate magicians quit to take on regular jobs instead. You can become an Associate member of the Magic Circle by essentially paying a fee and demonstrating a basic understanding of magic. Whilst attaining a higher level in the Circle, I entered a competition and was named Close-Up Magician of the Year. That put me on the map for London agents and attracted high-profile companies. About seven years later, I made a DVD to help magicians break into the corporate scene. It was a huge surprise and honour when the Magic Circle made me a Gold Star member of the Inner Circle, the highest accolade possible, for

helping to further the art of magic. For years, I’ve had problems with stomach pain and digestion, but put it down to strange working hours and the adrenaline of the job. The pain worsened and was sometimes so bad that it felt like my insides were being twisted in a vice. After consulting my doctor and undergoing a series of tests, I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease. I had a colectomy and my insides were in such a state that the surgeon didn't know how I’d survived for so long. But even at that time, I had become hugely passionate about running. I had already run 64 marathons, as well as 100 and 60-mile endurance races.

SOUTHERN COUNTIES

My first marathon was London in 2008 and the following year at the Brighton Marathon, I spotted someone running with a shirt with ‘100 Club’ written on it. I searched online and found out about the 100 Club, as well as about the many other marathons and ultramarathons held across the country. My first ‘ultra’ was a 96-mile run from Oxford to London, held over three days. I didn't know about waterproofing and additional layers and ended up in a sleeping bag with mild hypothermia!

I finished my 100th marathon in September. Normally, there is a big presentation upon reaching the milestone, but because of Covid-19, that’s not been possible. So, I had gingerbread man mementos made and crossed the line with a giant inflatable magic wand. One day, I would love to do the Marathon des Sables in the Sahara. I know I have the mental toughness, but might suffer in the heat.

In terms of magic, I'm always exploring new ideas. I have a fresh routine involving a floating table to offer an incredible sensory experience. The prop has been made in Las Vegas by a designer who has worked with David Copperfield, so it’s expensive. But the visual impact is impressive. As well as corporate magic, I will always enjoy children’s shows, as they help me stay young. I’m 49, but I feel 30!

STYLISH RESIN-INFUSED FURNITURE BY AYO DARAMOLA-MARTIN

T

hroughout a long and successful career in corporate marketing, Ayo Daramola-Martin maintained a passion for woodwork. Since turning 60 during lockdown, he has created a new company to sell his beautifully-crafted and eyecatching range of furniture and homeware. After a productive summer spent mostly in his Ifold workshop, Ayo hopes his unique products will resonate with discerning buyers...

Martin, you’ve had a dramatic change of career, then? Absolutely! My background is in marketing and business development, working with blue chip businesses in London. About ten years ago, I founded my own company to help small and medium-size businesses in the property and construction sector. I had a memorable experience working in the Olympic Village alongside the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) in 2012. That business is still going, but lockdown has given me the chance to reflect on what I

most enjoy. I reached a significant milestone in April and feel the time is right for a reinvention.

Authorised Dealership

Why woodwork? I’ve been making furniture as a hobby for years, as it helps me relax away from the pressure of work and I love the creative aspects of design. The house is full of furniture I’ve built! I realise that transforming a passion into a profitable business will be hard. However, I’ve used my marketing experience to build a website and launched social media pages to promote DAMA Designs too.

What’s behind the name? My ancestry is Nigerian, although I was born in England and raised by a white English family. The business name is a combination of my Nigerian and English surnames, Daramola and Martin. I suspect my interest in furniture is built into the fabric of my DNA, as there’s a strong craft culture in Nigeria.

What is the creative process behind your work? I enjoy visiting the wood yard with my wife, Rachel, finding interesting pieces to work with. I look at the wood’s shape and form and think, “What can I do with this?” A design is always dictated by the wood. I use hardwoods from sustainable sources – local, where possible. I like working with Scottish elm and ash and occasionally American walnut. I have bog oak that has been carbon dated as 5,000 years old and am thinking about how best to use it. I spend a lot of time considering every piece, sketching designs and bouncing ideas around with Rachel. I've almost built the item in my mind before even entering the workshop.

Resin features prominently in your furniture… The resin effect is well known, particularly in North America, where Canadian furniture makers have mastered ‘river tables,’ where the resin runs through the wood. It’s an interesting, organic effect and presents many possibilities. Sometimes, I add merely a hint of resin, with patches scattered

like small pools, but it depends on the contours and shape of the wood. Some people don't like the resin effect and purists may argue that it spoils a nice piece of wood. Personally, I think the juxtaposition of timber and resin creates fascinating furniture. People are captivated by it, running their hand across the resin to feel it. Is adding resin difficult? You need to be patient and thorough in creating your moulds, prepare the wood properly, and give thought to colour pigments. You can create different effects by manipulating the resin – even turning the river into rapids by swirling it. But I prefer the calmness of one consistent colour. I use blue, black, purple and emerald resin, as everyone seems to have their own preference. The furniture I’ve made so far is intended to inspire people, as customers often have a design or colour that would suit their own home. Would you describe your work as traditional? I think it’s quite contemporary. The designs often appear simple, as ultimately it needs to

What impact has Covid had on your new business? People aren't going to furniture shops like they traditionally have. Instead, they’re looking for new channels and businesses must find creative ways to reach them. As well as the website, we’re using sites such as Etsy, which is popular with craftspeople. We also hope to attend craft shows and fairs, as post-pandemic there will be a growing demand for such events.

What are you ambitions for the future? Ultimately, I'm looking for new premises, as my wife doesn't want the house to be cluttered with tables! I’d love to find a unit that I could share with other artisans. The size of my furniture is currently limited by the size of my workshop, and it would be good to offer more variety. Looking ahead, it would be great if I could immerse myself fully in DAMA Designs.

omptons Tennis Club in Lower Beeding is attracting new members after improving its playing courts and facilities.

The club hosts social tennis sessions during the week (©AAH/Toby Phillips Photography)

Several former members have visited recently, to inspect the club’s four new clay courts. Some could even recall the early days of the club, so named as several founder members lived along Comptons Lane in Horsham. As well as the new courts, LED lights have been installed in the flood-lit courts, with the club now ready to show off its facilities. Rhys Hanger, Head Coach, said: “Clay is hugely beneficial as it’s an all-weather surface. I've played on clay in snow before and it still offers enough grip to move around confidently. With grass courts, you can't play when it’s raining. Even if it’s wet the night before, conditions can be difficult. With clay, you can play throughout the year, providing you don’t mind getting wet! “Beforehand, we had artificial grass courts here, but they were far from ideal as tennis balls absorb water and expand. They stay low after bouncing off the court and it's hard to have a good game. As the surfaces were reaching the end of their lifespan Rhys Hanger, Head Coach at Comptons Tennis Club (©AAH/Toby Phillips Photography) 36

anyway, we decided to invest and switch surfaces.” “Before we re-laid the courts, we were losing playability for five months of the year. Now, we can play in all seasons. The surface offers good grip, so you're not slipping around, and the balls don’t absorb water to the same degree. As a bonus, balls leave marks on the surface, which cuts down on line-call arguments!” “Clay does require maintenance to keep them in good condition, but nothing that our counterparts in France, Spain and across the world haven't done for years.”

A HIDDEN GEM Rhys Hanger took on the role of Head Coach after predecessor Andy Tote left for a new role in Florida. Rhys is joined in the coaching set-up by Adrian Draghici and Julie Hanger, formerly ranked 479 in the world and a former Junior Wimbledon player. Previously, Rhys spent ten years at a High-Performance Centre in Brighton, working with players up to Grand Slam level, overseeing a team of coaches, physios and

trainers. He has also been Tennis Director at the Wimbledon Club (which differs to Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Club) and juggles his role at Comptons with his duties as Tennis Manager for ‘Give It Your Max’, a charity which promotes the game in deprived areas around the country. “Comptons has always been close to my heart,” says Rhys. “My first coaching job was here and I often came here to play with my wife, Julie, a former professional player. So, it’s a club I know very well. I view Comptons as a hidden gem. It has a tranquil feel because of its phenomenal location, but the entire club operates efficiently, covering every aspect of the game from Mini Tennis to Rusty Rackets, right through to County level players.” “The committee is strong and very forward thinking too, with everyone working together to create a pleasant atmosphere.”

KEEPING ACTIVE A primary focus of the club is to provide an outlet for physical exercise. It offers TENNISfit sessions on Thursday evenings and Pilates on Wednesdays, providing a gentle introduction for new players. For those who have never played tennis or not played in a long time, Rusty Rackets sessions and Tennis Xpress courses present a chance for people to interact with others and develop their game.

For youngsters, sessions are held for players of every ability, with LTA qualified and accredited coaches teaching them not only skills, but also to understand how to cope with the emotions of winning and losing. Rhys said: “The social side of the club is important, so we cater for all the family, with a wonderful club house where people can sit down, use the WiFi and enjoy a drink. We provide many opportunities for people to stay healthy and active. It’s important to give non-members the chance to try the game first, especially if they haven't picked up a racket for a long time.” “The Xpress courses are run in conjunction with the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) and are designed specifically for new players. So, you can learn without having to commit to a full membership, slowly building up your confidence first.”

COMPETITIVE TENNIS In terms of competition, Comptons runs inter-club events for singles and doubles. It also has several teams playing in the ladies and men's Sussex league. The top men’s team were recently promoted to Division Two and the new courts are already attracting strong players from other clubs as Comptons sets sight on the top division. Liz Tookey, committee member and captain of one of the Ladies’ teams, said: “I've played at other clubs where it's hard to progress as a player. Once you are in a team, it can be difficult to move around as people are naturally protective of their spot. But at Comptons, we aim to give everybody who wants to play the chance to do so.” “As we travel across Sussex, players often juggle tennis with other commitments, which provides opportunities if you are competitive and want to plat matches. “When Julie started the sessions only a few years ago, there were four young people,” says Rhys. “Our junior programme has come on leaps and bounds since and we now have juniors playing here several nights each week.” “We’ve welcomed new players since the Covid restrictions were eased too, as tennis was one of the few sports that people could play while still abiding by social distancing guidelines. POSITIVE FEELINGS I found my time at college very hard. I struggled to leave the house and would have panic attacks. So, in 2017, I created The Positive Page and started posting messages. Having struggled with my mental health, I wanted to talk openly about it and help others. Mental health was perceived very differently back then, although it was only three years ago. Initially, The Positive Page was exactly what it sounds like – somewhere to promote positivity and self-help, rather than being specifically about mental health. I just wanted to help, as I’m very open when it comes to talking about it. It’s not something that fazes me. I have a mental health disorder and cannot change that, so why should I walk around acting like I don't?

talk about it. Today, there must be 200 times as many Instagram accounts related to mental health and my voice is just one of many. Yet it's still a controversial subject. Some people believe social media is what causes people to have problems with their mental health in the first place. But I disagree with the statement that social media causes mental disorders. When I talk specifically about mental disorder, it is different to mental health. There are people who class mental health as something they don't have, which is so frustrating! The terms “mental health” and “mental disorder” are not interchangeable. Everyone has mental health and can struggle with it or not, but not everyone has a mental disorder. Some people are adamant that they don't have mental health at all, which is essentially just how you feel!

EPS

People have said to me, “You don't have anything to complain about.” They are right; There isn't a single event or trigger for my mental health disorder, I have a loving family and live in a secure environment. In that respect, my life is good. You can have all of that, yet still have a mental health disorder. And nobody should feel guilty for that. On The Positive Page, there’s a ‘Worry Box’ where people can write anonymously and I can reply with words I think might help, based on my own experiences. As others followed the page, they started offering advice too, which was wonderful. It became a friendly, safe place for people to turn to. Initially, about 1,000 people followed the page and numbers kept rising. It wasn’t people my own age either. Many were aged between 25 – 30, which surprised me.

After a while, the content evolved as people wanted to talk specifically about mental health and mental disorders. In 2017, it wasn't commonplace for people to

It's true that men don't talk about mental health in the way women do. Statistically, men are far more likely to take their own lives, so it’s clear that many struggle, yet don’t talk about it. There’s still that fear that it’ll make them seem less of a man, which is sad, as emotions are the most human of things. I was contacted by Mango Publishing, who publish unique voices. They often search people online who are raising awareness of certain issues. They asked me if I would consider writing a book, as they could see I was open about talking and had people following the site. I’m delighted with how Mango has presented the book. It’s just been released, having been available to pre-order for six months. I have no idea how many people have bought a copy. If it was none, I wouldn’t know!

EmotionFull is a made-up word. It’s similar to emotional, but people don't always like that word, so I made up my own! I wanted the book to be something that people could read when they’re feeling a certain way. I respond to different feelings in an open, approachable way. It’s very personal, almost like having a normal conversation.

Lauren Woods (©Toby Phillips Photography/AAH)

I’m very proud of the book, although it’s a strange feeling when I see people reading it, as it is so personal. When you post comments online, you don't see the person reading. When somebody reads your book in front of you, it’s nerve-wracking! My biggest worry is that they won’t find my words helpful. I hope the book helps someone, although I stress that it's not a replacement for professional help. It's tips and ideas that have helped me and might help somebody else in a certain moment. I find that once I start to understand what is happening to me and why I’m feeling a certain way, I can start to deal with it. So, I encourage people to write down their feelings, as it can help provide clarity.

“It’s good that we’re talking about depression, but there’s still a long way to go.”

Perceptions surrounding mental health are changing. People often talk about anxiety and depression now, although we still don’t talk much about complex mental disorders such as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) or eating disorders. It’s good that we’re talking about depression, but there’s a long way to go before people understand that OCD doesn’t just mean that you keep pencils in a straight line! CREATIVE NURTU

THE ART ACADEMY INSPIRES ARTISTS OF ALL AGES AND ABILITIES

D

uring lockdown, there was a surge in popularity in leisure pursuits, from running and cycling to kayaking and paddleboarding. There was a creative boom too, with many learning a new instrument, writing a book or picking up a paintbrush.

For Lorna Beard, owner of The Art Academy, this gives cause for optimism as her business rebuilds in the wake of Covid-19. Lorna had only recently taken over the reins from founder Lydia Sanderson when she was forced to close the doors. Classes are now back underway and Lorna reveals that the lockdown has inspired some to experience the social interaction and vibrant creative hub of the Academy for the first time...

WIN-WIN SCENARIO Lorna studied Art at college only to end up working in finance for ten years. It was only after being made redundant that she turned her full attention back to art. “I knew I had to improve my skills in certain areas if I wanted to make a living as an artist, so went along to The Art Academy,” said Lorna. “With more experience, I gradually improved and started picking up more commissions.” “I would work during the day and paint at evenings and weekends, often assisting Lydia with teaching. As well as developing my own artistic style, I became familiar with those visiting the Academy regularly.

44

“Eventually, Lydia wanted to retire to pursue other interests and she asked me if I would like to continue the Academy. My idea was to run the business parallel to my own work, so I could continue to experiment with abstract and impressionist art, as well as landscapes and portraits.” “To be a good artist, it’s important to paint as often as possible. Here, I can do that and as I improve, I can help others do likewise. It feels like a win-win scenario. I finally took over from Lydia in January and everything was going very well until we had to close in March.”

ENCOURAGING SIGNS As it offered an educational service, The Art Academy was allowed to re-open on 1 August, running classes for children during the summer. With many families forsaking holidays, the classes proved popular. Since September, adult classes have been running too, although numbers have been significantly reduced because of social distancing guidelines. It has been children who have adjusted to change the best, proving surprisingly efficient in maintaining a safe distance and using hand sanitiser regularly. However, artists of all ages have been pleased to see the Academy open again. “During lockdown, creativity shot up across the country,” says Lorna. “People needed to

do something to escape the madness and art was one thing they turned to. When we re-opened, we had a flurry of bookings as people needed some normality. We received new enquiries too, which is encouraging. We’re usually able to seat four or five around a table, but now we’re limited to two unless we have siblings in, so can only accommodate six or seven people each class.” “Hopefully, we can operate normally next year and more people who have discovered a love of art - or rediscovered a lost love - can join us. Art can be almost like therapy, especially after the last few months, which have been a terrible time for so many. For those who have had to manage home schooling or have seen their employment circumstances change, or even just grown tired of the four walls around them, we offer an escape.”

Sumners Ponds Fishery & Campsite is a unique and beautiful spot, set in tranquil West Sussex countryside.

URING

The Campsite itself boasts high quality facilities, glamping accommodation, acres of woodland, a working farm, five fishing lakes and of course The Café by the Lake positioned beside the beautiful Sumners Lake. Sumners Ponds is perfect for just relaxing, or for the more active there are plenty of footpaths and safe cycle-ways within the site to explore. Access to the South Downs and the coast is easy, while Brighton is half an hour by car and London only one hour away. There really is something for everyone!

INSPIRING OTHERS Social elements of the group can also help advance an artist by providing direction and inspiration from teachers and others. Lorna said: “Being exposed to other artists, all with their own creative ideas, really gets the juices flowing. The friendly atmosphere is important too, as it allows people to be a part of something.” “For children, art has been gradually side-lined from the school curriculum and parents want them to have more creative outlets. They love coming here as there’s no pressure. We don’t have tests or exams, yet they are learning without knowing it.”

Children are encouraged to express themselves as artists (©AAH/Toby Phillips Photography)

“Even for artists with more experience, working around others - as well as a teacher who can offer guidance - can be hugely beneficial. Lydia was great at helping people identify their artistic style and encouraging them rather than trying to mould them into something else. I have a similar Hannah Tatum helps out during at Art Academy class (©AAH/Toby Phillips Photography)

“Being exposed to other artists, all with their own creative ideas, really gets the juices flowing.” approach. You are free to find your own interests and creative methods at the Academy. And I am here to impart my knowledge as a working artist whenever it’s required.”

INSPIRING OTHERS Lorna has ambitious ideas for the future too. As well as continuing to offer classes, The Art Academy may diversify with specialist workshops for specific schools of art, possibly including life-drawing classes for adults.

Lorna said: “I'm also considering applying for an alcohol license. It would only be for occasional events, perhaps a ‘Picasso and Prosecco Evening’. There is a growing market for experience-style events and they attract a new audience. “It may be some time before people are ready to go to a busy club or a crowded pub, yet they might come somewhere like here to have a glass of Prosecco and try painting. I can't promise they’ll create a masterpiece! But it's about offering something new that allows people to experience and enjoy art.

BLUECOATS TURNS 30 CHRIST’S HOSPITAL SPORTS CENTRE CONTINUES TO DIVERSIFY

B

luecoat Sports Centre (BCS) recently celebrated the 30th anniversary of its opening.

The sports centre, in the grounds of Christ’s Hospital School, was officially opened on 12 September 1990 by HRH The Duke of Gloucester, who visited the School before unveiling the plaque outside the sports complex. He was accompanied by the Lord Lieutenant of West Sussex, The Duke of Richmond and Gordon, The High Sheriff of West Sussex, David Bowerman and the Chairman of Horsham District Council, Marjorie Ward. Although the façade and structure of the building remain largely unchanged, there have been regular improvements to facilities over the years. The outdoor Fitness Yard was built in 2019 and there was a significant refurbishment during lockdown.

James Maclean, Chairman of Bluecoat Sports, said: “The growth of sport and increased emphasis on personal fitness over the past three decades has dramatically increased the demand for the best training facilities and equipment. We are constantly striving to meet that demand and maintain Bluecoat Sports’ reputation as one of the leading sports complexes in the area.”

OPTIMUM USE The original plans for BCS were developed in the late 1960s. However, it wasn’t until the Great Storm of 1987 forced the School to give up its obsolete sports buildings that urgent action was needed. The centre was primarily designed to meet the needs of a large co-educational boarding school. But David Bridges, the first

48

leisure manager, recalls a strong desire to ensure optimum use of the building. “The facilities were so good that there was an opportunity to make BCS available for wider public access. That would allow the School to generate additional income, which being a charity was important.” “We identified times when the centre wasn’t required by the PE department and rather than having it sit idle, the swimming pool and indoor courts could be used by the public. The centre was cleverly designed so that local clubs and groups were essentially able to look after themselves. We also had a small but very capable complement of staff that were flexible with their roles.” “As it was on a school site, we had to be careful about who was visiting and established a membership scheme. But we quickly hit our financial targets.”

“I also think BSC has been beneficial for Christ’s Hospital, in that it has helped the School become more visibly part of the wider Horsham community. Thirty years ago, the CH Theatre was sometimes open to the public and the outdoor sports pitches were occasionally used too. But certainly, the sports centre has enabled the public to learn more about the School and its charitable mission.” “I was only manager for two years before taking on other roles at Christ’s Hospital. However, the centre has continually improved, which you need to do in the leisure industry. You can't stand still and there must always be investment in facilities and equipment, as the range of activities evolves. I can totally understand what the current management team are trying to achieve with their plans for future expansion.”

“BSC has been beneficial for Christ’s Hospital, in that it has helped the School become more visibly part of the wider Horsham community.”

EXCITING TIME The commitment to offer the centre to not only Christ’s Hospital pupils but other schools, clubs and organisations has certainly been met. Prior to lockdown, BCS was used by 22 local schools and was offering over 100 different fitness classes, many taking place in the 25-metre pool.

Melanie Marlow, the longest-serving member of staff, and first member Rosalyn Case next to the plaque, unveiled in September 1990.

Bluecoat Sports Centre has over 3,000 members and also caters for pupils at Christ’s Hospital School

One group using the centre regularly is Mel’s Milers, founded by Melanie Marlow, who is also the longest-serving member of staff. When Mel joined, there were only six members of staff with two duty managers, an office administrator, receptionist, lifeguard and cleaner. There were no computers or mobile phones - just a money box at reception and a day book for visitors and members. “It was an exciting time,” she recalls. “We were a small team and had to wear a lot of different hats. I was brought in to set up the crèche, but also taught swimming, gym classes, athletics to pupils, set up Mighty Movers (now Mighty Minis) and did some of the marketing. One of my personal highlights was attending a lunch in the dining hall when the Queen visited the School.”

Mel continues to teach, including Swimfit and endurance swimming lessons. Mel’s Milers remains popular, although sadly the group’s annual 10km event was cancelled due to the pandemic.

FIRST MEMBER Rosalyn Case was the first public member and remains number 01 on the system. “Opening times were initially very restricted,” recalls Ros. “But once classes started, I visited several times a day. It was a friendly environment and I felt privileged to be there. I have two fond memories. One was completing a charity step challenge when we climbed the height of Mt Kilimanjaro. The other was a charity swim in which I was one of three people to complete a mile of non-stop butterfly!”

Letters to the Editor editor@aahorsham.co.uk

Development will impact Nature Reserve Philip Turner of Horsham writes: I read with interest your News Round Up in the September edition, which was mainly covering current plans or proposals for further land development in Horsham and Billingshurst.

2,500, I believe). More green fields in a very desirable and rural part of our locality will disappear completely and forever. We moved to Horsham from the Netherlands eight years ago and one of the attractions of living here was that Horsham was a pretty, historic, market town within the beautiful countryside of West Sussex and - at the time - it was still small enough to be pleasant and uncrowded, unspoiled by urbanisation and development of land and property. There is a continual need for housing in this country yes, but not where over-development has already taken place and not on our green belt, which I was of the opinion was fully protected. This is obviously no longer the case...

I continue to be amazed at Horsham District Council's approval to build yet more houses in a town which is already full with relatively new property development. I feel angry when reading about a (possible) plan to go ahead and build new houses at Rookwood Golf Club, which apart from destroying a very attractive piece of green pasture and the golf club, will also impact the beautiful Warnham Nature Reserve, which HDC is continually praising and promoting to residents and visitors. What is the sense in any of this? I cannot see any. I commend HDC in rejecting the government's demands for a disproportionate number of additional housing to be built in our town, along with the rest of the country. This at least is a positive reaction to government and is what we all badly need - standing up to a lack of rationale and protecting what is left of our green belt and green fields in and around Horsham. But then, the Rookwood question arises, where the land belongs to HDC. So why, I question, would HDC even give

Land at North Horsham is now being developed (©AAH/Toby Phillips)

consideration to this potential project? I can only suspect that it’s with financial profit in mind. But surely, the beauty and nature of our countryside and the interests of our community must take precedence over that? As I drove to Rusper recently, I noticed that development has started in North Horsham to build a new school (Bohunt) to be followed by a substantial number of properties (initially

Editor: I’m certain your frustrations are shared by many residents. It seems people in some parts of the District (Adversane, Henfield, West Grinstead, Southwater etc) are in a never-ending fight to protect their rural surroundings. I believe the frustration of residents are matched by most councillors too. Sadly, I fear that the alternative plan now being presented for Rookwood (see News Round-up) suggests that HDC doesn’t have viable alternatives. It’s a horrible situation. And if such scenic spots are considered now, where else will be under threat in another generation’s time?

Susie Radford writes: Just a thought on plans for Rookwood. HDC refused a running track at Christ’s Hospital as there are bats in the area! I regularly see bats swooping at dusk at Rookwood. If it was just a running track, I’m sure we would be ok with that! Also, a family of deer graze there. Where will they end up, I wonder? I walk in this area a lot; it’s my chosen sanctuary when things go wrong in life. The water and trees are a perfectly peaceful place and there’s nothing else like it in Horsham or nearby. Our councillors were so keen to represent the community when there was an election, so why won’t they listen now? They must have millions more in the pot from the thousands of houses that have sprung up over the past few years. Five storey buildings? Please, no! 52

Gatwick Noise Won’t Go Away Communities Against Gatwick Noise Emission (CAGNE) writes: The Gatwick Airport board members virtually jet in next week to discuss the future of the airport. The aviation community and environment group, CAGNE, calls upon the overseas owners, GIP and ViNCI to remove the blight they are causing on communities of Sussex, Surrey and Kent with talk of rebuilding the emergency (northern) runway as a second runway. We call upon the owners of Gatwick not to use communities to seek profits by endeavouring to obtain planning permission, only to sell Gatwick to the highest bidder. Vinci purchased 50.01% of shares at a low price and must now see growth as a medium by which to recoup and profit from a sale, as they believe using the emergency runway will be in keeping with government policy. During lockdown, the CEO of Gatwick sent a letter to local residents. Stewart Wingate wrote:

We also expect, next year, to progress our plans to bring the existing Northern (stand-by) Runway into routine use which, as we rebuild passenger numbers over the next four to five years, will enable us to offer even more travel choice. We will ensure we continue to deliver our operation mindful of our environmental, social and governance responsibilities.’

Market Buzzing After Stamp Duty Changes The purchase market is currently buzzing. In a throw-back to some of the heady days of old, we’re hearing stories of bidding wars and properties being snapped up before they even come onto the market. It’s clear that whilst the raising of the stamp duty threshold has certainly worked to accelerate activity across the housing market, changes in people’s working and financial circumstances are affecting their decision-making process. Meaning that the value attached to good, professional advice has never been higher. Demand across the rental market also remains strong as many potential homebuyers from the pre-lockdown period are currently being forced into renting for longer due to lingering economic and workplace uncertainty. And some demands over the size, quality and location of these rental properties are also shifting.

It is increasingly disappointing that Gatwick’s overseas owners continue to talk of rebuilding the emergency runway as a second runway, blighting communities and housing markets of Sussex.

Here at Impact Specialist Finance, we’re seeing a swell of activity within the buy-to-let (BTL) marketplace as a wide range of investors, developers and landlords are looking to take advantage of the stamp duty tax break. This was reflected in research from cherryplc.co.uk which outlined that more than half of brokers have seen an increase in buy-to-let purchase business in recent weeks. 57% of brokers said they had seen a rise in purchase business, compared to just under 12% who reported an increase in demand for capital raising on a remortgage.

A family-run Horsham business with a great reputation and over 40 years experience...

There has also been an increase in the number of clients with more specialist BTL requirements, with nearly 8% of brokers seeing a rise in demand for houses of multiple occupancy (HMOs) and almost 4% seeing more enquiries for lending on both multi-unit blocks of flats and holiday lets. This uplift within the intermediary market is reflective of increased momentum across the board as the more professional end of the landlord spectrum are actively looking to add to their portfolios and acting swiftly on the opportunities that are currently presenting themselves.

Changes to the stamp duty threshold has led to a surge in demand

Confidence around the BTL proposition is growing as more and more lenders are re-entering the market after a temporary break and competition is rising, especially amongst specialist lenders and with the option of 85% loan to value now being back on the table.

Many challenges remain but the importance attached to private rented sector is all too evident. And the sector - alongside a robust advice process – will continue to evolve to meet this growing demand, not to mention ever-changing landlord and tenant needs.

CAPITOL COMEBACK

HORSHAM’S THEATRE IS WELCOMING BACK AUDIENCES

M

atthew Effemey, Operations Manager at The Capitol Horsham, outlines how the theatre has adjusted to these challenging times and is enticing audiences back…

Matt, how is the recovery going? It's difficult, but we are staying positive and adapting. We’re following government guidelines on social distancing, making visitors feel comfortable and confident enough to return. It’s safe, as we have all the restrictions in place. Our capacity in the Main Theatre has been cut from 420 to about a quarter of that figure, so there’s plenty of space between people. You re-opened with a series of films… The film industry is in a difficult position, as producers know that cinematic releases are not financially viable. So, we’ve been screening classic films and asking for feedback and suggestions from audiences. We’ve lowered ticket prices to £8 and a family ticket is £20. Kenneth Branagh’s ‘Death on the Nile’ is scheduled for release later in October and we hope that’ll attract a good audience. People are understandably concerned about venturing out, but we are open and ready.

“The first few shows are focused on encouraging people back, demonstrating that it is safe here.” What about live stage performances? Live shows will return on 2 October with comedian Tamar Broadbent. Tamar performed here two years ago, selling out the Studio. Now, she’s in the Main Theatre with a greatly reduced capacity. The first few shows are focused on encouraging people back, demonstrating it is safe. It was only a few months ago that 400 people were coming to see shows, so what has happened is just remarkable. What are your expectations for Christmas? As well as A Christmas Carol, we have Santa’s New Sleigh, a great children's

production. We are lucky to have it, as it became a sought-after production once pantomimes were cancelled across the country. We’re pleased to have both a family offering and an acclaimed production for adults in A Christmas Carol. We are plan to welcome other acts, possibly West End performers, for one-night shows in the coming months. You’ve refurbished during lockdown? We’re calling it a mini-refurb! The venue was closed for about three months. As a Counciloperated theatre, some staff were placed on furlough while others joined the Community Response Team. As we approached re-opening date, we came together to wallpaper or paint sections of the building (the deep purple has gone) and exposed part of the original floor too. We’ve invested in the bar and laid out new furniture to create a lounging atmosphere, with new film and stage art hanging up. The feedback has been very positive so far. Now, we just need more people to come and see it. Further Information Tel: (01403) 750220 www.thecapitolhorsham.com

David Benson and Jack Lane star in A Christmas Carol (©AAH/Toby Phillips Photography)

SAVING CHRIS CAN A CHRISTMAS CAROL SAVE THE CAPITOL’S CHRISTMAS?

D

ressed in “civvies” in the storage room at The Capitol, Jack Lane and David Benson are ready to tread the boards once again. The actors are scheduled to perform their adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic novel, A Christmas Carol, over the festive period. After the cancellation of the pantomime, the two-man show has been moved from the Studio to the Main Theatre, where social distancing will dramatically reduce capacity.

Like the venue itself, Jack and David are hoping no further restrictions are imposed to make a barely tenable situation for the entertainment industry even harder. AAH spoke to Horsham resident Jack and London-based David about the production…

56

Where did the two of you meet? David: At The Capitol Horsham on September 17, 2015. It was Jack’s first performance of his one-man show, Wisdom of a Fool, about the life of Norman Wisdom. I was practically ordered to come down by the great musical director and producer, Kenny Clayton. He said, “There’s a young man I've been working with and you should see his show.” I did and was quite overwhelmed!

Handcrafted Sausages & Quality Meats MADE USING BRITISH QUALITY-ASSURED PORK At Bangers Galore, we are passionate about our sausages and hope that you enjoy eating them as much as we enjoy making them!

TRY AWARD-WINNING SAUSAGES Visit us at Horsham Market every Saturday or selected farm shops and retailers: Popular flavours include: Traditional Pork Pork, Sage & Red Onion Pork & Leek Cumberland Pork, Garlic & Herb Pork & Apple Or try something different: Chorizo Style Pork, Mustard, Pear & Tarragon Chilli & Chocolate Pork & Wild Mushroom

STMAS What came of that first encounter? David: I knew we could work together as our talents and skills are well matched. I do a show about Kenneth Williams, much like Jack’s production on Norman Wisdom, and I had the idea to adapt radio broadcasts of Dad's Army as a stage show. I’m obsessed with old comedy like The Goon Show and Sergeant Bilko, and would often slip a medley of Dad's Army material into my Kenneth Williams show. It was what people talked about during the interval, so it seemed a good idea to pursue it.

OUR RANGE OF MEAT

So, Jack got the call? Jack: I’m also a huge Dad's Army fan and was listening to the broadcasts when I was six! We have similar comedy interests, although we’re from different generations. We’ve been putting on the Dad’s Army show for three years now and it’s been a blast. It takes a while to build a connection on-stage, but now we’re so in tune with one another that when you start thinking about other productions, like A Christmas Carol, you can build a clearer picture.

At Horsham Market, we are now offering fine beef, lamb, pork and poultry. We’ll also be suppling retailers, caterers, pubs and restaurants.

Sausages & Meat Collection Service We are now offering collection from our Horsham base. Call us to arrange or to discuss Home Delivery options

Is it difficult to adapt? Jack: The amount of time Dickens gives to describing characters is astonishing. He’s done the work for you. They are incredible characters and he digs deep into your soul with the story. Dickens found writing it emotional and would cry his eyes out at times. You do feel that reading it.

Renovated 16th Century Barn New House Farm Shop and Tea Room is located in a beautifully renovated 16th Century barn in a quiet spot on the edge of Horsham. People come from all over to enjoy our cafe and local produce.

Scrooge himself is a very dark character… David: I don't even know who I am when I'm playing Scrooge. It’s not me! It’s hard to perform the role without getting emotional. The scene where he shouts at Bob Cratchit is so intense, as he’s just vile. Yet there’s a message for all the nice people with money and lovely Christmas dinners, to think about others going hungry. There are more people like that now because they’ve lost their jobs. This story has never been more relevant. Dickens reminds us that what happens to Bob Cratchit could happen to us.

Strawberry Fields Tea Rooms You can enjoy cakes and sandwiches and Ploughman’s from our Strawberry Fields Tea Rooms. We are now open with indoor seating, with a limited menu including baps, sandwiches, toasties, and plenty of cake!

You’ll be in the Main Theatre… Jack: In the Studio, we could give a beautiful, intimate show and we want to somehow retain that. We won’t resort to gimmicks, although there will be subtle embellishments. Generally, it’s the same show people loved last year, when we did a three-week run with shows selling out.

The Best of Local Produce Our locally sourced produce includes fresh fruit and veg, fresh bread, local meats, beer and gins by local brewers, wines from Bolney Wine Estate and Leonardslee, Sussex cheeses, great gifts and much more!

We’re living in a very different world now, though… Jack: Yes, but the wonderful thing is that The Capitol is ready to go. It's heartbreaking that actors are going through such a terrible time and I have survivor’s guilt for having something to do. We want The Capitol to make money too as it’s close to my heart. I work here, my cinematic posters are up in the bar and we both own paintings of comedy icons that

“The time Dickens gives to describing characters is astonishing. He’s done all the work.” are displayed here. We want this place to remain open! Does it help being a small production? Jack: We’re fortunate in that our production doesn’t require a huge set, large cast or band. We may see an era of small-scale shows. National theatres could struggle because big productions involve big money, whereas regionals offering scaled-down shows stand a better chance. What’s next in the pipeline? David: There are 13 episodes of Dad’s Army that haven’t been adapted for radio and writer Nigel McCrery (Silent Witness/ New Tricks) is looking at them, potentially to record. We are always looking out for projects, but work is scarce. Right now, we’re excited to be back in Horsham and the show’s going to be amazing.
