The September 2019 cover features Jean Francis, a One Spirit Interfaith Minister from Horsham. The photo is taken at Sedgwick Park House where Jean hosted a Last Wishes Workshop, which gives people the chance to openly discuss their own funeral. For this photo, Jean changed into her ’celebrant’ robes. After the photoshoot, Ben and Toby loaded a painted prop ‘coffin’ in to the back of Ben’s delivery van, with Jean squeezing in the front for a lift home. If he’d been stopped by police, it would have taken some explaining! Other contenders for the cover included Billingshurst cobbler Christian Rhodes and Rossella Raciti at Carmela Deli.

Rather than calling us to collect it, the new management seems to have misplaced the AAH stand which has been there for years. Once the money tree bears fruit, we’ll get another one made to be placed elsewhere. In the meantime, AAH can be picked up nearby at Crates, Henry Adams or Horsham Museum.

We meet Horsham Battle of the Bands Acoustic competition winner Liam Carter and try to make sense of ballet with Annie Dunkley, the new Principal of Horsham School of Dance...

Holbrook Animal Rescue Centre is on the lookout for a new home, while Horsham Painting Group needs new members. We also meet Rossella Raciti at Carmela Deli, bringing a touch of Italy to the town centre...

The conversation turns deadly serious with Jean Francis at the Last Wishes Workshop, before we look back at 100 years of history at R.Rhodes and Son, a fixture on Billingshurst High Street for four generations.

Notes from the Editor

Where are the painted wagons and crystal balls? So, we don’t take kindly to travellers invading our public spaces then… A small band of travellers were the talk of the town as caravans pitched up in Victory Road, before embarking on a scenic tour of green spaces that took in Horsham Park, Bennett’s Field and The Needles. This caused much consternation, with little empathy for the travellers’ lifestyle. ‘Be gone with you! If you want to stay in Horsham, pay the extortionate property prices like the rest of us!’ There was criticism of the council for not doing more to stop travellers entering these sites in the first place, either by installing bollards or by providing a permanent travellers’ site close to town. Although this is actually the responsibility of WSCC (there are sites in Adversane and Five Oaks). There was criticism of the police too, for not arresting the travellers, although quite what for was unclear. “Okay you lot, who was it that was whizzing around the park, churning up the grass days before the ‘In Bloom’ judging committee arrive? Come on, own up!” Among the hundreds of comments posted on Horsham’s Facebook page, some highlighted inconsistencies of justice. One person raged: “I parked my car in Horsham Park for a couple of hours and got a parking ticket. I should have said I was a traveller and I could have stayed for days free of charge.” The accusation being there is one law for

those of us that abide by the law and another for those that don’t. Some even outlined vigilante-style options. One was about a digger, while another involved hay bales and a match. In reality, they were far-fetched, but the idea would make for a great daytime TV show about an unhinged, devil-may-care cop who doesn’t care for rules. However, my favourite remarks were those that noted the sleek, modern caravans that the travellers have. There was palpable envy in some comments, written by people who presumably wouldn’t dream of selling their own home and buying a luxurious RV instead. One wrote: “Judging by the vans, they’re not short of a bob or two. They could afford to buy land - maybe in Australia or somewhere.” The trouble with that idea is that non-citizens of Australia need the approval of the Foreign Investment Review Board when buying land, which can be difficult when you have no permanent residence and – possibly – incomplete tax records... The comments didn’t make pleasant reading, particularly for the travellers. Then again, they bring a lot of it on themselves, don’t they? Okay, stories might have been exaggerated. Some descriptions conjure up scenes of a demolition derby, with cars skidding around the park pond, kicking up rooster tails of mud as kite-flying children run for their lives! However, they did leave a mess that cost a lot to clear up and were an unsettling presence.

Travellers - maybe it’s time for a rethink. Rather than intimidating behaviour and variable standards of driveway resurfacing, hark back to your roots. Back in the old days, when everyone knew their neighbour and kids played conkers in the street, the travelling community was different. They’d arrive in exquisitely painted wagons decked out in intricately carved mahogany. Women would wear purple satin gowns and read fortunes as their fingers hovered over a crystal ball, while the men would demonstrate their skills as craftsmen, creating fine metalwork on the forge. Then, in the evening, they’d dance to the sound of the fiddle and accordion. All of which would go down very well in Horsham. The council would assign its Events team and stage a Romany Festival in the Carfax for that! Rather than the County Times publishing a sneaky photo taken from behind a tree, it would instead celebrate the arrival of travellers. “Fun for all the family! Those with illnesses who seek mystical remedies should book ahead to avoid disappointment.” Okay, I’m being daft. However, right now, travellers trigger anger, suspicion and are subjected to negative stereotypes. We should learn from our brief encounter and the authorities should at least consider better local provision and amenities. Then, if travellers still choose to pitch up and cause damage in public parks, they’re inviting a little mud-slinging, aren’t they?

Street Piano decorated by QEII School Watch This Space art project

Two Horsham Year of Culture 2019 projects are brightening up the district. The first, Street Pianos, has seen schools painting pianos, donated by Horsham Piano Centre and placed across the district for people to enjoy. QEII Silver Jubilee, Castlewood Primary, St Mary’s CofE Primary, Billingshurst Primary and Steyning CofE Primary School all decorated pianos with the help of artist Anna Lim. In August, musicians performed on them to support Chestnut Tree House. Another art project, Watch This Space, saw 20 artists working on hoardings in North Street, Horsham. These will be in place until the end of the year, when they’ll be auctioned.

A petition concerning the permanent road closure of the A281 Broadbridge Heath by-pass has generated significant public support. More than 3,500 people have added their name to the petition ‘Make Our Voices Heard about Broadbridge Heath Road Closure’ posted on www.change.org West Sussex County Council shut the by-pass from Newbridge Roundabout to the Tesco roundabout, whilst traffic can only access Broadbridge Heath village from Farthings Hill roundabout.

The petition’s instigator, Helen Eade, said that the changes has led to country roads being used as short-cuts for cars and lorries, traffic build-ups in Broadbridge Heath village and had a negative impact on local businesses. These views - directed to West Sussex County Council - are shared by frustrated residents and motorists, as more people are signing the petition every day. To sign the petition, search ‘Broadbridge Heath’ at www.change.org

Horsham Bowling Club hosts a Short Mat Open Evening at its base on Pondtail Road, Horsham, on Wednesday 2 October, 7pm. It’s an opportunity to meet members, enjoy a drink and discover what short mat bowling can offer. In 2014, Horsham Bowling Club moved from the Bishopric to a purpose-built facility in Pondtail Road. Along with a new bowling green came a modern clubhouse and the introduction of short mat bowling for the first time in the club’s history. In 2015/16, the short mat section formed its own team, Horsham Hotshots. Two seasons

later, they were promoted to North East League Division 1. The short mat section has also introduced three internal knockout competitions, with one solely for bowlers who haven’t won a trophy before. Once the summer is over, many of the outdoor bowlers will move into the clubhouse to enjoy short mat bowls. The bar is open on the Open Evening, so it’s a good place to start if you would like to play a great game and meet people. www.horsham-bowling-club.co.uk

Christ’s Hospital School has marked 150 years of the Band with a series of celebratory events over the course of 2019. As is tradition, the Band travelled to London to join the St Matthew’s Day paprade and the Lord Mayor’s Show. It also represented the school at the Brighton Children’s Festival Parade along the seafront in May, while there was a twilight performance on school grounds in June. Last year, the Band were also honoured to lead the People’s Procession through Whitehall on Remembrance Sunday, celebrating the centenary of the end of the First World War. Terry Whittingham, Bandmaster at CH, said: “This has been a wonderful year for music at CH as the Band celebrates 150 years. We held a special Beating Retreat with the Quad being illuminated. More than 600 people attended. We invited former Band Captains and one Old Blue (former pupil) from the 1960’s was among those to join us on the day. Being a part of the Band is something that never leaves you!” One of the more extraordinary traditions of Christ’s Hospital School involved the Band marching across the central Quadrant at lunch every day. www.christs-hospital.org.uk

Actor Jeremy Irons has made a financial contribution to the No Incinerator 4 Horsham campaign. He was contacted by Ni4H Community Group in the hope of enlisting his support for their campaign. Jeremy also sent Ni4H Community Group a copy of awardwinning environmental documentary film Trashed, in which he stars. It looks at the effect of toxic emissions from incinerators and reveals how rubbish is affecting us and the planet. Ni4H Chairman Peter Catchpole said: “Jeremy’s boost to our campaign is timely. However, the community continues to be at a huge disadvantage to Britaniacrest, who are making this appeal. With the Public Inquiry only 13 weeks away, there is added urgency to raise sufficient money so that Ni4H can afford a legal team to present the excellent case we have in objecting to building this commercial and industrial incinerator in Horsham.” www.ni4h.org

CARTER

THE UNSTOPPABLE SPECS MACHINE Who’s this then? This is 18-year-old Liam Carter, a singer and songwriter from Southwater.

Who was it; Paul McCartney? No. It was his brother, a cellist at the Royal College of Music in London. A short time later, Liam was accepted on to the Songwriting course at the Academy of Contemporary Music (ACM) in Guildford. As he is about to embark on his second year, he is also building up his repertoire of material and gaining experience of live performance.

What does the headline mean It’s a reference to early 1990s indie band, Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine, who most readers won’t have heard of. Thus, the reason for this explanation! It has really nothing to do with Liam, co-winner of the acoustic Battle of the Bands in August. An actual battle? No. It’s not like a Bob Dylan version of America’s coastal rap wars. Horsham has a long-running competition, with local acts competing in covers, acoustic and original music categories. Liam took his guitar along to the acoustic event, which was moved from the Carfax Bandstand to The Rec Rooms because of rain and came out on top (shared with The Golgis). Was that expected? It was a pleasant surprise for the former Tanbridge pupil. He said: “Since the final, every time my girlfriend calls, she’s says: ‘Is that Battle of the Bands winner?’ Winning has given me a boost and encouraged me to push on with music.”

Liam performing at The George & Dragon near Shipley

So, what’s Liam’s story? He’s not been performing for very long. A couple of years ago, he went to college to study video editing, but wasn’t enjoying the course, so he took some time off. He picked up a guitar, an instrument he’s played intermittently from a young age, determined to become a better musician. “I wanted to learn how to play properly,” he says. “Whenever I tried to play a song that didn’t come easily, I would stick at it and learn the chords, rather than just giving up like I used to.” While singing one day, a musician heard Liam play and wisely encouraged him to attend music college.

So, where does he play? Aside from a handful of performances at school, his first show was a year ago st an open mic night in the marquee at The George and Dragon in Dragons Green. Nervously taking to the stage, Liam performed a cover of Neon by John Mayer. It happened to be a favourite of the landlord and others at the pub, who started clapping and encouraging the performance. That’s his musical hero, is it? John Mayer is a big inspiration. However, Newton Faulkner has had just as much of an impact on his musical direction. Remind me? Faulkner’s debut album, Hand Built by Robots, was a chart-topper and inspired an abundance of singer/songwriters that have

dominated for a decade. Until Ed Sheeran came along, he was arguably the most successful graduate of Liam’s college, ACM. Liam said: “I went to watch Newton Faulkner at the Assembly Hall in Worthing. He has a percussive element to his playing, using the guitar almost like a drum. It’s a style I’ve adopted too, although not to the same level of expertise. That gig was a turning point for me and I went to see him at a more intimate concert in London, where I watched everything he did. He kept looking at me strangely because I was so absorbed by his performance!”

“I suppose people see a chubby kid in glasses and have low expectations.”

The success of acoustic singer/songwriters shows no signs of slowing down, does it? No, and Liam is encouraged by the likes of Lewis Capaldi breaking through to the mainstream. But he’s hoping to carve out a career on his own terms. “I can't pinpoint the genre that I want to fit into,” he says. “Sometimes, I play the acoustic, other times my songs have more of a rock or blues sound and suit an electric guitar. I write songs depending on how I feel at the time.”

regular at the George & Dragon’s open mic night, where he continues to surprise the punters. “I suppose people see a chubby kid in glasses and have low expectations. Hopefully when I play, it’s a pleasant surprise and they soon get into it.” Quite a few local pubs host music nights then? Venues have come and gone, but there remains a vibrant live music scene in the town and district. Liam said: “Horsham is the opposite to most towns and cities. In Guildford, a lot of places that used to host live music are closing down, but open mic nights are still popping up in Horsham, which is great.” What’s next for Mr Carter then? At ACM, Liam occasionally has the chance to showcase his talents along with a full band. He hopes to rope in some of his musical friends to record new original material in a professional studio, With the idea of releasing an EP or making songs available for streaming.

He is writing his own material then? Yes. He has about a dozen of his own songs. The Battle of the Bands acoustic competition is focused solely on original music. Early favourites include Favours and Out of Love which was well received at a gig at The Malt Shovel in Horsham recently. Liam has also played at the Cock Inn, Southwater, and is a

Louise Sloan Opticians: Looking After Your Eyes Wide range of beautiful frames

At Louise Sloan Opticians, we endeavour to give you the best possible bespoke service from the initial eye examination to when you collect your new glasses or contact lenses. As an independent optician, we are able to offer a more individualised service so you don’t have the ‘conveyor belt’ experience provided by some high street chains.

We regularly restock with new frames ranges throughout the year, offering highest quality frames and sunglasses from top optical designers such as William Morris, Prodesign, Vanni, Dutz, Moleskin, Epos and the premium range of minimalist eyewear Silhouettes. We also stock a sports range of sunglasses from Nike as well as designer ranges from Paul & Joe, Cocoa Mint and Raybans.

Louise will also take time to ensure she gets a spectacle prescription just right and tailors it around your own individual needs or lifestyle requirements. We include a health check as part of the sight test. Louise can observe and evaluate the health and condition of the blood vessels in your retina, which are a good predictor of the health of blood vessels throughout your body. Conditions such as diabetes and raised blood pressure can be detected. Regular testing also gives us the chance for early detection of glaucoma, cataracts and age-related macular degeneration as well as other eye conditions. When identified at an early stage, Louise can make appropriate recommendations or referrals to specialists which may help slow down or prevent any loss of vision.

30% off a second pair of lenses when you buy a new pair of varifocal glasses Do you find that one pair of glasses simply doesn’t cover all your needs? A second pair of glasses can make life easier whether they are for computer work, driving or for hobbies. Ask about the second pair lens offer when you come in for your next eye examination.* * Terms and conditions apply, ask in store. Cannot be used in conjunction with any other offers.

Right: Our state-of-the-art OCT scanner includes the latest technology to help detect eye disease

Independent service at its best

Good professional service at Louise Sloan Opticians goes beyond the eye examination. Our qualified dispensing opticians and frame stylists take time to understand your needs. We explain all your choices, from budgetfriendly to the latest designer frames. We aim to give you the time you need to find the best glasses for you, not rush you through the experience.

Ask for an OCT scan when you come in for an eye test An OCT scan looks at layers beneath the back of the eye. These layers cannot be seen by simply looking into the eye or by taking photographs. It means the optometrist can monitor minute physical changes that can indicate the onset of conditions including glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration. It can even reveal problems years before you notice any symptoms.

Help choosing your new glasses

Some people find it hard to choose frames on their own and feel more comfortable with someone to guide them through the experience. Frames must fit well, look good and have the qualities you need to suit your lifestyle. Some frame types may be more appropriate for you than others. Our dispensing opticians will talk you through the options and explain which lenses are the best for the frames you select, and which frame types may be more suitable for your lens prescription.

What Our Customers Say “I had been nervous of going to the opticians as I knew I'd have to replace my glasses, but the minute I arrived there I felt I was in the right place. It was the best eye test I'd ever had then followed by considerate assistance to choose my new glasses. I was impressed by how thoughtful they were. I can't praise Louise Sloan Opticians highly enough.” JSP “Best service I have ever had. You’re treated like a person and given the time you need not rushed. 10 out of 10!” DJ “Really outstanding all round service. I felt very comfortable in their non salesy, relaxed atmosphere. All my family are now going there.” JP

Louise and her team are very happy to help you with expert advice to find something that suits your needs and style. Let us help you look after your eyes.

A Teeny WEENY Annie is the new principal at Horsham School of Dance

Bit of Ballet Experience

After attending Royal Ballet School and starring on Top of the Pops, Annie Dunkley is Principal of Horsham School of Dance The dance school’s students can attain grades in different disciplines

Annie passes on her extensive ballet experience

Horsham School of Dance was founded back in 1925. But for only the fourth time in its long history, it has a new Principal. At a time when young people are inspired by contemporary dance styles they’ve viewed on social media, it helps to have a Principal who can call on a wealth of experience. Annie Dunkley attended the Royal Ballet School before moving into the world of pop music as a member of Hot Gossip. She then went on a European tour with Bombalurina, which had a chart-topping hit with Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini. To Annie’s horror, it’s still on YouTube! Annie describes in her own words her journey that led back to ballet, and tells how Horsham School of Dance inspires healthy, well-rounded young people...

Stuttering Start My mum took me to see a production of Beatrix Potter by The Royal Ballet when I was little. Afterwards, I leapt around the garden like Jeremy Fisher, so she took me to a ballet class. I found

it boring initially and didn’t want to go back. But the teacher felt I had potential and I was gently encouraged to keep going. I was fortunate to live close to a very good dance school, where experienced teachers guided me to a career in dance. At the age of 10, I was accepted by the Royal Ballet School. At the time, I was certain I wanted to be a ballerina. In my early years there, I was selected for many lead roles as I’d come from a good ballet school and was already well-trained. However, others caught up with me and as the years went by I was offered fewer roles. I came out low on confidence and by 18, wasn’t so committed to a ballet career. Then, I met Arlene Phillips.

Hot Gossip Arlene was in Hot Gossip and she liked ballet-trained dancers, as they were technically competent. So, I joined the group towards the tail end of its existence. It was strange coming from a ballet background and suddenly performing different styles of dance to accompany pop music. Arlene is a brilliant choreographer

and everyone in her group had great ability. I was out of my comfort zone to begin with, but gradually, I found my feet. I lived the life of a freelance dancer and had a great time, constantly auditioning for work. I filmed pop videos with the likes of Freddie Mercury (Made in Heaven), Whitney Houston (How Will I Know?) and was even an animated ghost in Queen’s It's a Kind of Magic. I also danced in videos for Cliff Richard and Tina Turner songs and danced at the BRIT Awards and the Royal Variety Performance.

Novelty Hits However, I'm best remembered for the Timmy Mallet song! He was approached to make a novelty record and they needed two dancers for the video, choreographed by Arlene. The other girl, Dawn Andrews, married Gary Barlow. Andrew Lloyd-Webber was behind the song’s production. To my surprise, the song took off and reached No.1. We went on Top of the Pops and toured

WHAT’S ON AT THE CAPITOL

“The song took off, reached No.1 and we went on Top of the Pops.” around Europe. As Bombalurina, we had another hit (Seven Little Girls Sitting in the Back Seat) and went back on Top of the Pops for the Christmas edition. We had fun, travelling to Germany and France for TV appearances. We were picked up by limousine in Paris. A couple of years later, LloydWebber was also behind Doctor Spin, releasing a remix of the Tetris theme tune. I was on Top of the Tops, pretending to play the keyboards while wearing a ridiculous costume of blocks. It was great fun, but it was

freelance dancing. We gave the impression of being a band, but it’s one quick job and then you’re auditioning for the next one!

Back to Teaching Later, I filmed a series of commercials for Peugeot, loosely based on Thelma & Louise, with an actress called Julie Graham. We were depicted driving around America in a 106. It was great work, as by then I was married and had a daughter, so commercials allowed me plenty of time to spend at home. I started teaching a dance class at my daughter’s primary school

in Wimbledon. It wasn't sure I could teach as it requires different skills, but I became more comfortable with it and took teaching qualifications in ballet. Having not thought about ballet for years, I’d gone full circle and had a new appreciation for the skills involved. When you’re young, you take for granted what a skill it is. We moved to Horsham, where I wanted to continue developing as a teacher. So, I called local dance schools and asked if they needed help. Horsham School of Dance replied and I started teaching in 2011, developing a programme following the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) syllabus.

Simultaneously, I was teaching for the English National Ballet’s outreach programme.

Modern Styles Every other year, we stage a show at The Capitol, which in recent years has been my responsibility. We create a story for part of the show – The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was perhaps our most successful – and the rest of the evening is a combination of tap, modern, ballet, street dance and musical theatre, showcasing the singing, dancing and acting talents of everyone in the school, from the ages of three to our teenage dancers.

Rosemary Walters recently retired as Principal, although she still runs a school in Dorking. I have now taken the reins as only the fourth Principal, and am looking to rejuvenate the school, becoming more involved in festivals, competitions and community events. Contemporary dance was introduced recently and is already becoming popular. Television shows like The Greatest Dancer inspire children and social media shows the scope of contemporary dance. It can be emotive, occasionally dark and follows a narrative, which is why it’s so popular with

today’s teenagers. Ballet is governed by technical rules, whereas contemporary dance bends the rules, making it more creative in that respect. While my focus is predominantly ballet, we have three other teachers that specialise in tap, modern, contemporary and musical theatre. So, as a school, we’re well placed to guide young people, wherever their passion lies.

Dancing Careers It’s important to remember that 90% of our dancers will not want to pursue it as a career. They just want to enjoy themselves and benefit from good teaching. We see boys and girls of all abilities and want them all to be happy, well-rounded, self-disciplined and confident. That is what dance can do when it's taught properly and with empathy. It’s not healthy to have an environment where only the best dancers matter.

Whatever place you’re into

We hold dancing exams, following the syllabus for the Imperial Society for the Teachers of Dance (ISTD) and the RAD. These run from pre-primary school exams to Grade 8 and vocational qualifications. We always encourage those students who want to pursue a career in dance, even though they must go beyond what we can offer. We’re proud that one of our members has recently been accepted by The BRIT School and another has graduated from the Central School of Ballet. Even for those not planning a dance career, progression through the grades is still important. We do have an adult class, which has been popular with parents. Most were nervous initially, as they thought they’d have to wear a leotard and tights! Learning as an adult is a very different

skill, but they enjoy it. I have experience of running a Silver Swans class for people over 55, so I’ve seen how dance benefits people of all ages. Of course, you're not leaping all over the place at that age. There’s gentle music and movement, but the classes still provide people with the freedom to move with music which is not only fun, but reduces stress levels and improves balance and physical fitness. Our children see a lot of photos on Instagram, with dancers raising legs and doing countless spins. It is impressive at first glance, but often their technique is lacking. It’s more like watching a circus act or a gymnast perform. Personally, I feel dance is about expressing emotion through movement of a narrative or music. It’s not how high you can flick your legs or how many times you can spin around. It’s about moving an audience by telling a story. That is a far more difficult skill...

WHO WILL SAVE

THE RESCUERS? HOLBROOK ANIMAL RESCUE FIGHTS TO SECURE FUTURE As we sit down for an interview at Holbrook Animal Rescue, Laura Santini is feeding a tiny squirrel. It was found under a tree and brought to the rescue centre on Old Holbrook, where it’s being delicately nursed back to health. While the centre predominantly focuses on caring for and re-homing domestic animals mainly dogs and cats - members of the public regularly arrive with hedgehogs, deer, birds, rabbits or other wildlife found injured or abandoned. In 2011, the rescue centre attracted enquiries from across the world when a fawn and rabbit in its care became best friends. The odd couple even made the cover of AAH! The pair were eventually relocated to a sanctuary in Norfolk, where they remained inseparable for far longer than expected until each gradually started to prefer the company of its own kind.

“We do see a lot of wildlife animals, even though we're not a wildlife sanctuary,” says Cliff, who runs the centre with wife, Laura. “Often, people come across an animal, call a charity like the RSPCA or Care for the Wild, but cannot get through to the right people, particularly at evenings or weekends. As local people know where we are, they will turn up on our doorstep and we’ll do what we can for any animal.” “Small animals, especially birds, will die if you don't feed them within a few hours of them being picked up. So, we give them a chance to survive. This squirrel is typical in that it was blown out of a tree in Forest Row and picked up by a member of the public. We were the only people they could get hold of.” “A few months ago, someone came in with a box full of netting from his pond. Inside the netting was a bird, which we spent half an hour cutting free. This man put up a nice review about us as

This squirrel was found injured and alone by a member of the public

he contacted a charity first but they wouldn’t help. Laura is so passionate about animals and will do anything for them. Once, she was up a ladder, her hand deep inside a tree, trying to find a baby woodpecker that was in obvious distress. It took a while, but she saved it. Who else would do that?”

“There is legislature regarding the release of wild animals, so whilst we do what we can, we make regular trips to Brent Lodge Bird & Wildlife Trust in Chichester, where wildlife can be rehabilitated before being safely released.”

LOVE & AFFECTION Laura and Cliff, assisted by a team of volunteers, have been running the rescue centre for 26 years. Initially, there was just a handful of dogs and cats in their care, with an occasional rabbit too. Now, at any given time, there are about 30 dogs, 10 cats, several horses and ponies and a variety of other residents being permanently cared for or seeking a good home.

Sue Sawyer volunteers at Holbrook Animal Rescue Centre

Many come from across the Horsham and Crawley too, often arriving as pets that are no longer wanted or cannot be cared for. Laura also takes in some dogs from Europe that are in desperate need of better care. New homes are found for many of them, with owners and animals gently introduced and sharing dog walks before being adopted. Some animals never leave the centre. Those with special health needs or too old for re-homing become permanent residents. And there’s always one that needs walking, feeding or demands love and affection...

Laura said: “We have a few cats and dogs that are old or poorly, as well as a couple of goats that we hand-reared, sheep, several horses and ponies and even a pig. In some cases, it’s best an animal stays here so we can keep them safe. However, that does mean that we spend more on vet bills then anything else.” “Until recently, we funded everything ourselves, Cliff mianly through his removals company. We’ve been boosted by occasional donations too. Recently, we secured charitable status, which has given us more credibility and presents the chance of applying for grants and funding. But little has changed in terms of our day-to-day operations. We still do this out of love for animals. They’re my life and although it’s hard work, I love it!”

THREAT OF DEVELOPMENT Holbrook Animal Rescue Centre is under threat. The centre is been located on land, owned by Laura’s mother, which falls within the area designated for a major new

Cliff Santini is on the lookout for a new home for the rescue centre

“We don’t know how the animals will react when the bulldozers move in.” development, known as the North Horsham site. This will see 2,500 homes built, alongside a business park and schools. Like other properties on Old Holbrook, an agreed purchase was made on the land about 15 years ago. When the time comes to vacate, the price agreed wil not provide the Santini family with the funds to establish a centre of a similar size elsewhere, with fields for grazing animals. “We've been lucky to be able to use this site for as long as we have,” says Cliff. “When it is sold, money will be divided several ways and it’ll be difficult to start afresh. We’re not even sure how long we can stay here. Horsham District Council say it could be years, but the developers reckon it’s months away,. We’ve guessed at 18 months!” “When development work begins, we have no idea what the disruption will be. If they build around us, it’ll be difficult to run a rescue centre, as animals will be unsettled. When the bulldozers move in, we don’t know how they are going to react. One of the benefits of this site is that it’s quiet, with open fields behind us, even though we are just off the A264. Now, we’re having to make plans for the future by organising a fundraising campaign to save the centre.”

SEEKING A HOME With a fundraising manager in place, Holbrook Animal Rescue hopes to raise £1.5million to buy property with enough space. That’s a tall order in any economic climate, but Laura and Cliff believe they can secure the charity’s future, one way or another. “Ideally, we need someone with land that we can either use or rent cheaply for an animal centre,” says Laura. “We do not need much ourselves. Just a small dwelling for us to live, with fields and buildings that we can adapt for the animals. It would be ideal if there was somewhere as a meet-and-greet area, which we’ve never had.” “With fields included, we would require about 10 acres. We know there are places that could accommodate something like this and it would be a wonderful way for somebody to be involved in something so worthwhile as the caring of animals. We hope that local companies are willing to support us too, but even individuals organising a cake sale or doing a fun run for a few pounds makes a significant difference to us.” “Currently, with development looming, there is a real danger of this ending. That is what we’re most worried about. I'm not sure what I would do if I didn't have to get up to care for animals every morning.”

HUB OF CREATIVITY

GIVING ARTISTS FREEDOM AT HORSHAM PAINTING GROUP

Horsham Painting Group, founded in the 1960’s, provides opportunities for artists to meet and paint in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, as well as offering the chance to exhibit. The group meets on Tuesday evenings at Forest School, Horsham, and regularly hosts demonstrations by professional artists. AAH met members Elizabeth ‘Libby’ Rowell, John Fortune, Cecilia Carlton, Heather Glenny, Sue Mitchell and Chairman David Jeans to find out more... Libby: I've been a member since 1989, but the group started in 1963. I know this as I compile the group’s history files. I joined as I’d always been keen on painting. I wanted some company and the chance to improve as an artist. I'm 90-years-old now, but going back a long time, I was close to attending art school. It didn't happen because of the war, so I’m making up for it now. John: I didn’t particularly enjoy art at school. I came to it much later in life. As

an architect, everything in my working career needed to be precise, but with painting, you can let yourself go and create freely, as it really doesn't matter! Heather: I was brought up in the countryside and love horticulture and wildlife, so my art tends to focus on nature. People know me for my floral pictures, although I prefer to call myself a flower portrait artist, rather than a botanical artist. David: I like painting landscapes, visiting places like Nymans and filling sketch books with fast pictures, which I later reference for paintings. I think it improves a painting when you sketch from real life, as photos don’t provide the same impact.

Sue Mitchell working on a three-tone painting

Sue: I'm responsible for the group’s programme. This evening, we are working to a theme of three colours, which members can interpret how they wish. However, people don't have to stick with the programme. Some have ongoing projects and are happier Jo-Jo Halligan enjoys portrait painting

focusing on those. The most important thing is that you're coming here to paint.

there is strength in numbers, so we feel more comfortable as a group.

John: Our evenings are very relaxed, as this isn’t school! It’s up to an individual if they want to follow the theme or concentrate on other work. We can all offer guidance and advice, but would never criticise as we want this to be an encouraging environment. We previously had tutor-led sessions and looked to bring in someone new when he passed away. In the end, we decided we were happy doing our own thing. If you're not careful, a tutor could start telling others how they should or shouldn’t be painting. Artists are all different and like to develop their own style.

Cecilia: We have several demonstrations a year, with visiting artists showing us their work and style of painting. As well as giving us fresh inspiration, it's good to have different people imparting their wisdom and showing us techniques we may not have seen before.

David: Members sometimes meet outside of group sessions for social painting expeditions. Working in public spaces, with people peering over your shoulder, can make you self-conscious as an artist. But

Sue: Whatever our professional demonstrators do, we try to interpret at our next meeting. The variety of work by the members is incredible. Libby: I’ll paint anything, but I enjoy drawing wooden posts, as they have knots, holes and rusty nails that give them character. Long ago, I visited Ireland as my husband wanted to fish the River Shannon. He managed to hook an old post and that's how my interest all started!

Cecilia Carlton

Cecilia: We’re all different here. Personally, I like creating quick, expressive pictures. Acrylics suit me, as you can easily brush over mistakes. Some people prefer traditional styles, but that’s not for me.

Heather Glenny enjoys floral painting

Heather: I'm one of nine local artists involved in an exhibition of botanical art at Horsham Museum. With botanical work, every detail must be precise and depict elements of the plant and seeds. I prefer faster pen and ink sketches though and occasionally dabble in more abstract elements. David: Our meetings only last for two hours, which isn’t a huge amount of time after a chat and a cup of tea. Still, I try to complete a painting each week, otherwise my interest waivers. I couldn't be someone who works on one painting for months!

John: We host an exhibition twice a year, one of which is at the Quakers Meeting House, Worthing Road, Horsham. Long ago, we held them in the Old Town Hall. We were sorry to leave there, as it was a central location and attracted lots of visitors. But we still have good footfall. The exhibitions give us a chance to show off our best work. With the themed evenings, we try many different things and while some work, others don’t!

Horsham Painting Group meets at Forest School once a week

Sue: Some weeks, you might create something terrible! But it's all practice and if you keep at it and learn from your mistakes, you’ll hopefully improve. David: I hope we’re not known as being a group for older people, as we do have younger members. It can be hard after a long day at work to be motivated to paint, but it’s extremely relaxing and I can recommend it. We’re fortunate to have several painting groups in Horsham, but I believe we’re the only one that meets in the evening.

“It can be hard after a long day at work to be motivated to paint, but it’s extremely relaxing. Sue: Home life can be so busy that people struggle to find the time to paint as much as they’d like. But here, even if it’s just once a week, you can switch off and focus solely on art. LAST WISH

PREPARING OUR

CHANGING OUR PERCEPTION OF FUNERAL SERVICES Like so many others who have lost a loved one, Clare Davison was faced with having to organise a funeral at a time when she was grieving her husband. Fortunately, Clare had given some thought to arrangements having attended a Last Wishes Workshop held at Sedgwick Park House. The workshop, hosted by Jean Francis, an Interfaith Minister and Spiritual Counsellor from Horsham, had outlined the many ways in which a funeral can be less sombre and more a celebration of life. Jean explained to a small group how grieving families are not limited to expensive coffins, church services and gleaming hearses. People can be buried in a painted cardboard box and transported in a modified Only Fools and Horses Robin Reliant if they wish. Our ashes can be cast

adrift aboard a miniature Viking boat lit by blazing arrows. The options offered by alternative funeral specialists meant that when it came to organising her husband’s funeral, Clare created a unique service with the help of Dandelion Farewells, a local funeral company Jean recommended. “When Jean held the workshop three years ago, she brought with her a beautifully painted cardboard coffin. I have always found old wooden coffins with creaking lids absolutely terrifying, so I loved this idea. We had a really open discussion and were all asked to write down our thoughts for our own funeral.” “When John died 18 months ago, I was in a terrible state and didn’t know what to do. He wasn't a religious person and hadn’t expressed feelings about his own funeral. He

just trusted me to arrange it. Remembering the workshop, I ordered a simple white cardboard coffin for only £200 and asked friends and family to send photos of John. Our nephew’s children spent hours helping me decorate the box with pictures. I stuck on a label of his favourite Chablis, while the children and my dogs put their hands and paw prints on it too. It was a joyous moment during a sad time, as everybody was talking about John.” “I bought a jewellery box and lined it with purple satin, and this is where I keep John’s ashes. The funeral ended up being a quite beautiful experience. When it’s my time, I would like to be buried in a pink coffin with pink roses around me, and transported in a pink Cadillac! I find old-fashioned funerals fearful, especially for children, and it doesn’t need to be like that.”

NATURAL OPTIONS As pictured above, Jean Francis (far right) has since returned to Sedgwick Park to host further Last Wishes Workshops, always speaking to intimate groups of people. She presents information that many of us are not aware of. Like how ceremonies can be held at home or in a garden, that it’s possible to be buried on private land, and that costly wooden caskets are not an obligation. One of Jean’s primary aims is to raise awareness of environmentally-friendly options, such as no embalming or natural burial sites. People can even request that a tree is planted in their memory, to counteract harmful emissions during cremation. Attendants to workshops are given worksheets to complete, covering everything from insurance plans to their preferred funeral music. These sheets can later be used by relatives to ensure your wishes are adhered to.

Another attendee at the workshop is Margaret Tyzack-More, who has been inspired to arrange an environmentally-friendly burial. “I'm going to be laid to rest in a willow coffin at Clayton Wood Natural Burial Ground in the South Downs,” she says. “At Clayton Wood, everything that goes in the ground is biodegradable, as am I. There’s no headstone, so ultimately, you’re just pushing up daisies!” “By filling in the Last Wishes Workshop forms, you can tell those you leave behind how you want to be buried. These are people you love, so you don’t want them to have to worry about money or what kind of handles to put on the coffin!”

INTERFAITH MINISTER Jean was initially inspired by two lifechanging funerals, both pre-arranged by the elderly gentlemen involved, which she attended 25 years ago. These uplifting experiences led her to write a book, Time to Go, about the importance of saying ‘goodbye’. This was followed by two more pocket-sized books, Finishing Touches and Ashes and Memorials. Having moved to Horsham in 2002, Jean joined ARKA Funerals in Brighton, one of the first local companies to focus on ecological funeral choices. In her 10 years there, she learned how to personalise occasions with compassion and even drama. However, Jean understands that some ideas can lead to disagreements, having experienced this at her brother’s funeral. Clare Davison created a special ceremony in memory of her late husband, John

“For the benefit of other relatives, Jim’s funeral service included hymns and prayer,” recalls Jean. “But I felt that my cheeky little brother deserved a bit of sparkle. Working with a celebrant, I adapted a poem called On Angels’ Wings. My brother was a double amputee and was building a three-wheeled Harley Davidson. The poem was about him wearing his red bandana and riding among the stars. Just before the committal, as the curtain was rotating, I played a soundtrack of a Harley revving up, which was a brave thing to do. I wasn't sure what the reaction would be, but everyone smiled. My brother didn’t go to church and I think he’d have enjoyed that. That’s why attending a Last Wishes Workshop and expressing your own views is important.”

WIN A SPA DAY FOR 2 AT SOUTH LODGE

The Last Wishes Workshop, hosted by Jean Francis, inspires people to talk about and prepare for their own funeral

After leaving ARKA, Jean became a One Spirit Interfaith Minister, training with the One Spirit Foundation and being ordained on her 73rd birthday in 2012. As a Minister, Jean presents services for people of any faith or none at all, creating a ceremony that reflects an individual’s lifestyle, philosophy, hobbies and humour. “Many people are spiritual but not religious, so Interfaith Ministers can fill the gap between religion and Humanism,” she said. ”Traditionally, people haven’t been comfortable talking about

death. But by planning ahead, a funeral ceremony can possess real healing power. It presents a wonderful opportunity to take responsibility for one’s departure. You can say, ‘thank you’ or ‘I’m sorry’ to someone.”

CHANGING VIEWS

“Death seems to be the last taboo, yet it will affect every one of us sooner or later.”

Jean hopes that future generations will be more open when it comes to discussing death and that the funeral experience will become more celebratory and less costly. “Some funeral companies have protocols and traditions. I respect that,” says Jean. “That suits a lot of people, but we shouldn’t all be restricted to a church or crematorium service. There are natural burial sites and basic packages which cost very little, which is a key message of my workshops.” “It’s taken my whole lifetime, but thankfully people are now asking questions and seeking a funeral service that reflects their life. The younger generations are more openminded and social media is making them aware of options, particularly those that are less harmful to the environment.” “Death seems to be the last taboo, yet it will affect every one of us sooner or later. If we think about sex, it doesn’t mean that we’ll have a baby any more than if we think about death we will drop down dead! So, my mission is to make the experience surrounding funerals a better and more gentle experience.” WORDS: BEN MORRIS PHOTOS: TOBY PHILLIPS

Carmela Deli goes from strength-tostrength, bringing a little taste of Italy to Horsham town centre...

SICILIAN S The Carmela name has been a familiar sight in Horsham for almost a decade and the Raciti family are part of the town’s modern fabric.

It was back in 2010 that Francesco, already well-known in Horsham as the manager of Italian eateries, and sister Rossella opened their own restaurant on Denne Road. It was named after their proud mother, Carmela, who’s love of Sicilian cuisine has been inherited by her children.

After two years, a delicatessen opened in the Carfax and the family worked long hours to operate both ventures. Sadly, the restaurant closed in 2017 due to Francesco’s health problems and the Raciti family discussed the possibility of the deli following suit. However, the deli remained open and Rossella, with support from husband Marek, has turned around its fortunes.

“We opened Carmela Deli seven years ago,” says Rossella. “At that time, there wasn’t a deli in the

Renters should ensure they take out insurance UK Finance has confirmed that mortgage lending was down 4% year on year in June, amounting to £21.9bn. Despite this, house purchases increased nearly 3% as 48,539 approvals occurred, compared to the previous year. This is encouraging, and we’re seeing 49% of all business coming into impact specialist finance being house purchases. There’s certainly a lot of properties being developed currently, so this should not be surprising! We often associate protection needs with homeowners, but it was interesting to see recent data suggest that the majority of renters are putting themselves and their possessions at risk because they do not have vital forms of insurance in place. “I would suggest that Research from Aviva consumer confidence uncovered evidence that just appears to be the highest one in five rental households it has been for some had life insurance, compared considerable time.” to three out of five homeowners with a mortgage. The figures are particularly concerning because the number of renters in the UK is rising, a trend driven by high house prices and other challenges which make it difficult for would-be first-time buyers to get on the housing ladder.

TYLE centre of town as Horsham Cheese Shop had recently closed. It was an idea that my mum supported, so she worked at the shop too for a couple of years until reaching an age where it became more difficult for her, so she retired.”

“It was a tough time for us all when we closed the restaurant. We could have closed the deli too, but we kept it going for my mum’s sake. She would have been devastated if it shut. I am very grateful to her and

Francesco for opening the deli and keeping it running all these years, as it required a great effort. Since November, I have been running the shop with Marek, giving it my full focus, and it has gone from strength to strength. We’re now open seven days a week with more selection than we’ve ever had.”

A further study from Sainsbury’s Bank appeared to back up this trend, finding that while 41% of homeowners had life insurance or critical illness cover, just 26% of those renting had such a policy in place. People are very quick to insure their pet, Sky TV, their travel plans and their house contents, but forget their biggest asset and this frequently gets left to last, or until it’s too late. Finally, from where we see it, on the front line, I would dare to suggest that consumer confidence appears to be the highest it has been for some considerable time, despite the uncertain economic climates! July and August are never normally this busy! It is not just one geographical area either, although does appear to have a leaning to the south. What does seem to be apparent is that the demand is for ‘all types of mortgages' for all types of people! From the straightforward, to the complex, to the commercial shop front, to the credit issues, to the first time landlord investing in their first Buy to Let property and so much more.

It is also the perfect place to buy Pannetone, the classic sweetbread enjoyed by Italians at Christmas and famed for the beautiful decoration of its tins. This year, Rossella promises to bring in more luxurious Pannetone in the run-up to the festive season. As well as sweets, Carmela Deli serves a breakfast menu and lunch time paninis, using Italian cheeses and cured meats. It also offers frittata (Italian omelette), arancini (savoury-filled rice balls) calzone and Italian hot dogs. “People come to us as they like supporting a family business and it’s a friendly deli,” says Rossella. “They also like home-made paninis and our coffee is – I’m told by many people the best in Horsham. We serve Carraro and customers who like it can buy it for use at home too. We have customers who used to go to the restaurant but now come here for breakfast, as they know us and know we serve good food. They also like it that we are flexible. If you want to try a different salami in your panini, it’s no problem!” “Although we’re an Italian deli, we have all lived in England for a long time and this is home, so it’s not all Italian. There’s a compromise, as I want everybody to be happy! We

As well as pannatone, customers can buy Italian chocolates, nougat, coffee, cheese, salami, pasta and jars of grilled peppers or sun-dried tomatoes. There’s a selection of Italian beers, wines and liquors too and of course, the Sicilian heritage of the owners is evident. PIAZZA FRENZY

Carmela Raciti at the 2014 Piazza Italia

As you might expect, Piazza Italia is one of the busiest weekends of the year for Carmela Deli. The Raciti family have been supporters of the event for years and despite the presence of an Italian market in the Carfax for the duration of the Easter festival, customers flock to the deli too. But it is now a year-round draw for visitors... “When we first opened, we didn’t have much competition,” says Rossella. “Now, competition is everywhere. In the last two months, Starbucks and Café No.4 have opened. I was worried about that for a while, as for a week we were quiet on the coffee side and I saw many people walking around with Starbucks cups. Then, after a week, it returned to normal and my customers came back. As word spreads, we’re seeing new faces all the time.”

“The shelves are well-stocked and we have more fresh produce than ever!” “Things have improved a lot. The shelves are well-stocked, we have more fresh produce than ever and the customers keep coming back, so the future for Carmela is very good.”

T H E G E N E R AT I O N GAME Prudent financial planning should cater for the needs of all the members of a family, from the youngest to the oldest. When the Queen turned 93 on 21 April 2019, she served as a very public reminder of how much longer, as a society, we are living. In her own family, four generations are now all alive at the same time, from the Queen herself down to her latest great-grandchild. An increasing number of families now find themselves in the same position, which has implications for financial planning. As a nonagenarian, Her Majesty is far from alone. The number of people over 90 years old rose by 39% between 2007 and 2017, according to a report published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) in 2018.1

their working years was benign and kind to them; but it was less so for those born in the 1980s and 1990s – the so-called ‘millenials’ – who are finding it harder to get jobs and to get onto the property ladder. It means many parents are having to support their children financially well into their adult lives. While our children are struggling with their finances, our parents are living longer. This has led to an increase in the need for long-term care, which is likely to be financed from accumulated savings, selling the family home or with support from younger generations.

A further ONS report states, by 2037, the UK’s 65 years and over age group could reach 24% of the whole population - a marked increase in the 18.2% figure recorded in 2017.2 Another key theme is how we manage our wealth against the backdrop of a growing generational wealth gap.

enabling families to work collaboratively to support each other across the generations. Financial support need not be in the form of a handout; it can become an integral part of generational financial planning, and be undertaken in such a way to reduce Inheritance Tax. ONE FAMILY’S

COBBLED HIST R.RHODES AND SON IS PART OF BILLINGSHURST’S FABRIC

As Christian Rhodes stitches a pair of riding boots, he is continuing a long family tradition. It is 100 years since his great grandfather, Raymond Henry Rhodes, established R.Rhodes and Son in Billingshurst. Cobbling skills have been passed down from father to son ever since, with Raymond Cecil passing on the business to Geoffrey. Sadly, he lost his fight against cancer earlier this year. Now, the business is headed by his son, Christian, the fourth generation of Rhodes to take charge. Growing up, Christian worked in the shop after school, slowly learning the trade from

his father. But without the workload for two full-time members of staff, he went to college to learn another trade. His father had always said, “Don’t work for any fool but yourself”, so Christian founded his own locksmith business, Rhodes to Security. However, following Geoffrey’s untimely death, he stepped in to ensure that the Rhodes name remained on the High Street. “I knew I would lose dad at some point, but didn’t expect it to be so soon,” he says. “I thought I would have more time with him and that he could teach me what I needed to know. When he died, it was a case of keeping it going and to a certain degree I’ve had to find my own way.”

“Every day, somebody comes in and asks to see my dad, as everyone knew him as he’d been in the shop since 1982. People don’t visit the cobblers very often, perhaps only once every year or two, so you tell them that he’s not with us anymore and it knocks you back every time. We have some people who have been customers of ours for a long time. Some tell me that I’m the spitting image of my grandfather. A couple even remember my great-grandfather, which is remarkable!”

TORY

RHODES TO SUCCESS The shop was first started by Michael Rhodes in Shipley, but it was his son, Raymond Henry, who moved the business to Billingshurst at the end of the First World War. He made and repaired shoes and boots at his home, a cottage opposite St Mary’s Church, Billingshurst. As soon as he was old enough, his son, Raymond Cecil, would ride a specially adapted delivery bicycle, visiting customers around the village and surrounding areas to deliver and collect footwear. The success of the business necessitated the opening of the shop in 1934, with new sewing and sanding machines installed to

In the early years, the Rhodes’ bought full hides which were soaked until they were ready to be cut for the making and repair of boots and shoes. At the outbreak of the Second World War, Raymond Henry Rhodes volunteered to be a

His son, Raymond Cecil, tried to enlist in the army, but was barred admission as cobblers were essential to the war effort. As a result, father and son worked tirelessly to repair and make hundreds of army boots. Henry Cecil also became the leading officer of the Billingshurst Fire Brigade and a collection of helmets still adorn the back room of the cobblers’ shop. Geoffrey learned the trade too, but went to the City and trained as an accountant, before eventually being lured back to the family business. “I think it was the freedom to work for himself that brought him back,” says Christian. “He endured some tough times here but managed to survive several recessions. He always said that the business wouldn’t have made it if the mortgage hadn’t been paid off long ago. If we had rent fees, R.Rhodes and Sons would have closed years ago. It’s the rates that make the difference.”

time learning how to use the machines, as they can be deadly if you get them wrong. I’ve heard horror stories about people stitching their own hand! But we are a traditional repairer and still don't use a machine for compressing soles. We soak leather for several days before replacing them as it’s better for the longevity of the shoe and provides added comfort too. That means we can't turn around a pair of shoes on the same day as some of the franchise cobblers can. We need a week to repair them, so we can do the job properly.” “We do a lot of leather and zip repairs on bags and riding boots too. With the loss of traditional cobblers, fewer people are doing proper stitching work, so we do particularly well with the equine community as work needs to be precise.” “We do see shoes that look in a bad way, but if you love a pair, it’s worth spending a bit of money to maintain them. Also, high quality footwear will gradually evolve to the shape of your feet and it can be very difficult to replace these for some people. So, it’s better to maintain them for a long period of time. The older generation clean and polish shoes to keep them alive. But younger people buy shoes that are not as well made and harder to repair, as they use cheaper materials. This means it’s not costeffective.”

The R. Rhodes and Son team now comprises Millie Chandramani, Joan West, Jodie Meyer, Chris Rhodes and Jordan Matthews. (Photo: R. Rhodes and Son)

TARGET TIMBER SYSTEMS Traditional Values using Modern Methods of Construction

“There is supposedly a surge amongst the younger generation considering the environment and reducing the fashion industry’s impact. Having shoes repaired is a way of doing that and yet most still buy cheap shoes that don't last. With regular customers, I try and gently persuade them to spend more on shoes. Spending £300 on a pair is very hard, but it’s cost effective in the long run and better for the environment too. Once you have broken in a good pair of shoes, they fit like a glove and are comfortable, so you never regret it.”

CHALLENGE FOR VILLAGES Over the course of time, R. Rhodes and Son has become isolated on the High Street. While shops have opened around Jengers Mead, the closure of the banks has had a detrimental impact on Billingshurst, particularly those located at the southern end.

The throwaway culture of modern fashion coupled with the growth of chain outlets like Timpson, a regular sight in town centres, has made it hard for independents to survive. But Christian hopes that the Rhodes name can survive long into the future. “I’m getting to the point where I feel I'm working at a standard that my dad would be proud of, balancing the cobblers with my locksmith business by only opening the shop in the morning.” “I’m lucky to have help, especially from Joan West, who was a good friend of my dad’s and has been coming here for 20 years, so she has vast experience.”

“Before dad passed away, he said I could do whatever I wanted with the business, as it was my time. Certainly, I don’t want to lose the shop, as it’s my family's history and heritage, passed down through the generations. Now it’s my job to look after it.”

All aspects of tree surgery, hedge cutting & garden maintenance covered. Call for

September is an in-between and unpredictable month for wildlife. If we have an Indian summer there could still be butterflies and dragonflies on the wing but if it turns damper and cooler we could see fungi popping up and trees turning gradually golden. I am going to opt for the former and take my chances looking for lounging lizards. I hear rustling amongst the tussocky grass alongside the path. I take a few steps back and wait patiently…and sure enough, five minutes later, a head emerges and a wary eye scans around before the common lizard reclaims his sunbathing spot on the trailside log. This is a perfect time of year to look for lizards soaking up the sunshine. Whilst the adults are beautifully camouflaged with a mixture of brown, green, black and cream-coloured scales, the youngsters are black – perfect for absorbing heat. Common lizards give birth to live young who must be alert and active immediately. There are many dangers for lizards; they are popular prey for cats, pheasants, jays and kestrels to name a few. But they don’t just rely on camouflage or speed to evade predators; if threatened the lizard will shed its still-moving tail which will distract the predator whilst the lizard, crucial organs intact, makes a quick getaway! The lizard can regrow its tail, although it is usually shorter than the original. When we find a lizard with a stumpy tail we describe it as ‘having had a bit of an adventure!’
