HORSHAM FESTIVAL 2016

The new Horsham Festival is the first Horsham Town Centre and area focused celebration of the arts for many years. In its first year, the Horsham Festival will feature a range of events and performances to inspire across the arts spectrum. Local artists and performers will engage audiences right across the arts spectrum from music and dance to theatre and visual arts. The phrase something for everyone is much over used but is a fair description of what is hoped will become the Festivals greatest appeal over time.

INTRODUCTION

THANK YOU Thank you to West Sussex County Council Community Initiative Fund, Horsham District Council Community Fund, Horsham Museum and the businesses, organisations, venues and groups supporting this exciting new festival. This programme has been kindly sponsored by Toovey’s Auctioneers of Washington.

involved. It aims to give a focus to Horsham’s already vibrant scene, creating an Arts Festival that in time will be regionally recognised. A key objective is to foster local youth development in the arts, seeking to create a powerful relationship between those that aspire to perform or create and those that already do. Youth involvement is being integrated in to the Festival’s management from the start, ensuring that the Festival’s future is shaped by a true cross section of tastes and talents from across the community.

HORSHAM FESTIVAL 2016

DINOSAURS AT THE MUSEUM MONDAY 11TH - 16TH JULY

horshammuseum.org/events/ Horsham Museum hosts an exhibition of the District’s links to dinosaurs, throughout the week of the Festival. On Saturday 9th 11am - midday, and on Saturday 16th 2:30 - 3:30pm, Jeremy Knight, Heritage and Museum Manager, will provide a talk on dinosaurs. 176 years ago, there was a keen amateur dinosaur hunter who, looking over lumps of stone waiting to be cut to build a new chapel for Horsham, saw a dark mass amongst greyish brown rock.

Both fascinating stories and resultant art work along with fossils remains are told and featured in this temporary exhibition.

PTERODACTYL FOSSIL

30 years ago, keen amateur fossil hunter Sylvia Standing rescued the material before it was to be made into bricks. Little did she realise that after 30 years of research, the world’s leading dinosaur artist John Sibbick would recreate from those fragments Horshamosaurus Rudgwickensis – a dinosaur named after her home town and that of George Bax Homes.

JEREMY KNIGHT

PTERODACTYL FOSSIL

Little did George Bax Holmes realise that this discovery would catapult him in to the world of The Great Exhibition of 1851 and Central Park, New York.

EVENTS HORSHAM RIVERSIDE WALK As well as displaying remains, the exhibition also showcases the work of Hastings born video artist Toby Tatum, who has produced a short film, Monsters. This event runs from 9th July - 5th September. Jeremy Knight will also give a talk called ‘Horsham Culture, Pre-history to 2000' during the Festival week. Jeremy’s knowledge of the town is second to none, and his History of Horsham Volumes are available exclusively at Horsham Museum.
