AAH (ALL ABOUT HORSHAM) JULY 2023

NEW ROUND-UP

Martin Brunt, Crime Correspondent at Sky News, on his career to date and new book

Brolly Brewing moves from a Wisborough Green farm to a Horsham industrial estate

The July 2023 cover features Martin Brunt at the arched entrance to the gardens of Park House in Horsham. Martin is more recognisable than most of our cover stars, as he’s the long-serving Crime Correspondent for Sky News. He is also a Horsham resident, so was happy to chat to AAH about his new book, featured in this edition. Alan Wright, the AAH photographer, took several other shots. One had Martin among the bushes of the Dragon’s Maze, but it had a ‘snooping’ connotation that didn’t really fit the story. So, we went for this more casual image. Martin then sat down to speak to Ben, the Editor, over a coffee outside Kaya in the Park. One member of the public actually interrupted the interview to shake Martin’s hand. The price of fame!

Other contenders for the cover included Holly and Brook Saunders at Brolly Brewing, Zach Linfield at the Shipley Soapbox Derby and the team at Home Counties Pools & Hot Tubs.

AAH is an independent monthly magazine, founded back in 2011. To prove it, here’s our cover from 12 years ago (AAH, July 2011). The magazine is owned and run by Ben Morris, a life-long resident of the Horsham District.

EDITOR’S NOTES

REFLECTING ON TOWN’S PUB CULTURE AS MY SON TURNS 18

It’s a cliché, but it really does feel like yesterday that I was celebrating my 18th birthday. I remember it quite well, considering it was more than a quarter of a century ago and that I ended up falling asleep in The Green Dragon (now The Olive Branch) in the Bishopric.

We had our first pint at The St Leonard’s Arms (now Tesco Express), which I loved, as it had a bowling alley, then headed to The Tanners Arms (now a swish home, presumably with a cellar) on the way into town. We might have gone to The Bear, where we had the odd custom of only using words that rhymed with ‘bear’. It sounds quite toffish, like Etonians on tour, but our vocabulary was so limited that we ended up just saying ‘chair’ a lot. After that, we’d have gone to The Crown, which by 1997 was just coming out of the period when ‘Wonderwall’ was on a constant rotation on the Jukebox, sparking impromptu singalongs. After a cheap round in The Lynd Cross, we ended up at The Green Dragon, on what was to become our regular spot around the square table.

I remember it well because drinking in pubs was largely a new experience for me. That wasn’t the case for some of my friends, who had the facial hair and gruff voices required to gain access to drinking establishments. I looked closer to 14 than 18. So, aside from a brief time when The Stout House seemed quite relaxed with regard to what constituted proof of identity, I spent most Saturday nights hiring DVDs from Blockbusters, watching them with

another vertically-challenged friend. We both faced the indignity of watching our younger sisters heading into town, with far better odds of getting past the bouncers!

The reason for this ‘flashback’ is that my eldest son has just turned 18 and it was his turn to go out in Horsham to celebrate. To be honest, he looks older than I did, but pubs now are more stringent when it comes to ID, as serving under-age drinkers could cost them their license. Also, I think it’s fair to say that the drinking culture among young people isn’t quite what it used to be. You could argue as to why that is. Perhaps there’s more pressure to succeed academically. Perhaps it’s down to social media, as drunken antics cannot be so easily erased from memory in the era of mobile phones. Perhaps the laddish era of Britpop or the hedonistic days of rave music influenced society in a very different way to the current crop of timid chart-toppers, who can be easily upstaged by a 76-year-old on a piano. I joked to my son that mine is the first generation that –rather than being frustrated by the wild antics of their children – wishes they’d stop playing video games and have more fun!

So, I can’t say that I was disappointed when my son asked if I could print something out for him. It was scorecards for ‘pub golf’, which as you can probably guess involves consuming a variety of beers and spirits at a pub (or hole) in the fewest number of sips possible. I guess at the end, the winner vomits into a claret jug.

My wife tried her best to temper the boy’s enthusiasm.

‘You don’t need to do all nine holes! Five or six will be plenty!’

But I doubt that was ever a possibility, once the game was underway…

As he set off, it was our parental duty to say the things that parents must, no matter how little attention was heeded.

‘Don’t let anyone spike your drink!’

‘Don’t walk in the park alone!’

‘Don’t get in a car with anyone who’s been drinking!’

‘Don’t take Hippy Crack!’

There were other needless worries, uttered by embarrassing parents who read The Mail Online more than they should...

He made it home in one piece, which was a relief. In the morning, I went up with a cup of tea at 11am, as he hadn’t stirred. He groaned, then rolled back under his duvet. I took down his cup and a half-finished bowl of Corn Flakes from the day before that he hadn’t cleaned up, stepping over clothes from the night before that he’d dumped inside-out on a pile of clean laundry, which we’d asked him to put away a hundred times. There was a Biology A’ level test paper on his desk that he’d promised to do before his final exam, but he’d not written a single word. Typical! But on top of it was a completed, if crumpled, pub golf scorecard.

Nine under Par.

Well, I guess that’s something.

A team of fundraisers have completed a remarkable 1,100km journey across India in Tuk-Tuks

The eight-strong team of friends included Helen Hitchcock, owner of Sakala, a shop in Steyning that sells ethically-sourced items from India. Helen is also a patron of Safe in Sussex, which helps victims of domestic abuse. They embarked on their journey on 1 June, setting off from Steyning High Street in four teams, comprising Team Mowgli (Helen and friend, Sarah Hand), Team Duk Duks (Amanda Duke and son, Tom), Team Chuggabug (Anna Tidey and Yas Rajeebally) and Team Tatum (Deb and daughter, Emma Tatum). They drove the Tuk-Tuks from the sandy beaches of the Arabian Sea, through the mountains of the Western Ghats, down to the bustling

city of Mumbai, and arrived back home on 14 June. Helen said: ‘We had a blast! Our little bugs caused quite a stir through the villages and on the highways of Goa, Karnataka and Maharashtra. It was tiring, dusty, but challenging and an amazing experience!’

The team are grateful to sponsorship from Tatum Racing, Arundel Care Services, Arri, VI Rental, Anton Bauer, Chandler Kent, Private Wealth Mortgages, Goldings Barn Garage, Steyning Post Office, Tuk-Tuk Shop, Sakala and 24-7 Drama. To celebrate the successful trip, a ‘Shocking Shirts and Funky Frocks’ party was held at Sussex Prairie Garden, Henfield. The teams have raised £17,000 and you can support them by searching ‘Team Sakala 2023’ at justgiving.com

The Floral Fringe Fair is an eclectic country fair which this year is held in a beautiful meadow and woodland near Billingshurst called Loxwood Meadows. This is the 10th year since we created it and will be a joyous celebration of the things we love. Artists and makers, plants, wildlife, good food, vintage, Steampunk, classic cars, forest bathing, singing, dancing, music and a great atmosphere!

On Sat 2nd Sept we are very excited to have the legendary chap hip hop artist @professor_Elemental performing as well as our popular Bellyfunk dancers. On Sunday 3 September, performers include Taylor Maid, Mythago Morris and Stix Drummers. Vintage singer Kerry Le Bern will be there all weekend.

The fair is dog-friendly to friendly dogs on leads. There will be four different places to buy lunch and coffee or tea at the fair, plus two vintage tearooms, beer, gin and rum bars! The food stalls cater for vegans too!

We especially love it when people dress in style to come to the fair. Either vintage or Steampunk or just a colourful outfit or a big hat!

Two male kingfishers were pictures in an aerial tussle near the kingfisher nesting bank at Arundel Wetland Centre on 18 June.

Kingfisher males are territorial over their fishing grounds and nesting areas and return to both, year-upon-year. The territorial dispute between two males was captured by visitor

Alec Pelling. You can tell that both birds are male as their beaks are totally black, whereas females have orange on their bottom bill. One of the males is part of a pair nesting at the Arun Riverlife lagoon at Arundel Wetland Centre. wwt.org.uk

A new rose has been named after Dr. Susan Michaelis, who told of her battle with lobular cancer in the May edition of AAH. Community Transport Sussex (CT Sussex) has launched its innovative Electric Community Car Club in Henfield. Funded by Motability, a national disability charity, the aim of the project is to provide those with disabilities in rural and semi-rural communities with access to affordable shared transport, which will allow them to access services and social activities independently and improve their general wellbeing. Volunteers and a local steering group will run the service. All cars are adapted for those with limited mobility and an electric wheelchair accessible vehicle will be available, if required. The initiative is supported by actors Sue Jameson, James Bolam and Yvonne Edgell.

Sue Jameson said: ‘Well done CT Sussex on this creative and innovative idea. We hope people will enjoy the opportunities the club affords to help the wonderful village of Henfield become even less polluted and to bring people together. Let’s hope more positive community projects are launched in the future which promote accessible transport.’ ctsussex.org.uk

LIFE OF CRIME

Martin Brunt has been a familiar face on Sky News for more than 30 years. As the broadcaster’s long-serving Crime Correspondent, he has a reputation for accessing inside information on major cases, breaking countless world exclusives during a distinguished career. Here, the Horsham District resident talks to AAH about his time as a journalist and hopes for his recently published book…

CLEAN BREAK

I started my career at Power Laundry and Cleaning News, one of two specialist laundry magazines that existed at the time. I studied journalism at London College of Printing and most of us started out working in trade magazines. After two years, I needed something more interesting to write about, so took a pay cut to become a junior reporter at my local newspaper in Kent, Chatham News

My next step was to work for news agencies, including Ferrari Press Agency, founded by the father of my close friend and former colleague Nick Ferrari, who now hosts the Breakfast Show on LBC. I’m grateful for

having had that grounding at local papers and agencies, as the work was so varied. Recently, a graduate at Sky News asked me for advice, as she was attending the Old Bailey for the first time and wanted to know about its rules and protocol. I told her it was the same as any Crown Court, but she had never done any court reporting. At risk of sounding like a dinosaur, it’s a shame that junior reporters no longer benefit from the same experience I had. Some local newspapers have survived, but many have vanished.

After working for Fleet Street tabloids on a freelance basis, I took a staff job on the Sunday Mirror, eventually becoming chief reporter. I left in 1988, when mobile phones were still a new concept and long before the phone-hacking scandals. There was great rivalry between the newspapers, especially between Sunday Mirror and News of the World, with huge demand for celebrity scandals. I do enjoy a rivalry and sometimes wish there was another national crime reporter to keep me sharp! I once ‘doorstepped’ Paul McCartney and published a world exclusive about a plot to kidnap his wife, Linda. Such stories wouldn’t be published today, as more consideration is given to privacy, and that’s a positive change.

AIM FOR THE SKY

I was approached by Sky in 1989. Sky News was a revolutionary idea, with rolling 24-hour news, but nobody knew if it would succeed. I remember colleagues at the Mirror saying, “You’ll be back in three months!” But Sky’s timing couldn’t have been better. The Fleet Street gravy train was hitting the buffers and the era of drinking sessions in pubs and big salaries was drawing to a close. It wasn’t long before my former colleagues wished they’d made the move I did, as Robert Maxwell took over the Mirror and looted the pension fund. Two years later, I was reporting on his death in the Canary Islands.

Sky News couldn’t attract the more established TV presenters to its fledgling project, so the best they could do was to hire Fleet Street hacks and train us to perform on camera! Sky News launched a massive marketing campaign and, one day, my son came running into the house, saying he’d seen me in a branch of Radio Rentals on Chatham High Street. They had a life-size cardboard cut-out of the Sky News team in the window display!

SKY NEWS CRIME CORRESPONDENT MARTIN BRUNT PUBLISHES BOOK

Martin Brunt in Horsham Park (©AAH/Alan Wright)

We had about a month to practice reporting on camera. It wasn’t easy and there’s no substitute for experience. I remember particularly dreading reporting from outside court, as I thought I had to memorise an entire script and speak directly to camera for two minutes. Eventually, I came to understand that I only needed to memorise 15 seconds, as stock footage or graphics were edited over my voice. Another thing I soon learned is that there’s nothing wrong with holding a notebook. For a reporter, it’s natural to refer to notes.

For five years, I covered everything for Sky News, including wars and conflicts, before becoming Crime Correspondent. During the first Gulf War, I was based in Saudi Arabia for

three months, before covering the break-up of Yugoslavia from Croatia and Bosnia. War reporting is the most exhilarating job in journalism, but it’s fraught with danger. On one occasion, we were in the Bosnian village of Travnik when I saw the flash of a sniper’s bullet whizz by. I didn’t understand at the time how perilously close I might have been to losing my life.

I’m glad I did the job, but five years was enough for me. There are extraordinary reporters who devote their entire career to covering conflicts, risking their lives to show the world what is happening.

TRAGIC CASES

People often ask if I get nervous about reporting live. The answer is no. The only time I’m anxious is when I’m not in command of all the facts. If somebody asks me a question that I don’t know the answer to, I ask them to come back to me, once I’ve found out. Or I use a politician’s trick and change the subject to something I do know about! Sometimes, I can be in court all day, but only need to provide a short report. On other occasions, having lots of information is vital. At the end of the murder trial for the man who killed young Olivia Pratt-Korbel, we were waiting outside Manchester Crown Court for family and police statements. The wait went on and I needed to

talk for 20 minutes about the trial. You need to have your wits about you though, to ensure you don’t miss an important statement.

The grisliest case I’ve covered is that of Fred and Rose West and the House of Horrors murders. The testimony of Fred’s daughter, Anna-Marie, has stayed with me. When she was a child, she would walk to school thinking every child was going through the same terrible experiences she was subjected to. Another case that resonated was the murder of Sarah Payne, as I had a daughter the same age and it was so close to home. I had moved to the Horsham District by that time, and have lived here now for about 30 years. It felt incongruous driving through the beautiful South Downs while covering such an awful story.

Of course, the Madeleine McCann case is one of the great mysteries of recent times, and people are always fascinated by unsolved crime. During the early stages of the investigation, it was difficult to obtain information from the Portuguese police, as detectives suspected the McCanns of being involved in their daughter’s disappearance. Accusations were made in the Portuguese press, based on leaks from the police. This influenced British coverage too and led to the McCanns falling out with the UK press. In some cases, the McCanns received damages for libel. I was misled badly by a source for one of my reports for Sky News. It was my understanding that a forensic investigation on a car that the McCanns had hired three weeks after Madeleine’s disappearance suggested her body had been inside it. It transpired that it wasn’t true, and of course I regret that. It damaged my reputation, but I did subsequently try to clear up my mistake.

PARTRIDGE MOMENT

One particular quote has been good for my career. I knew somebody involved in the case of serial killer Steve Wright, known as the ‘Suffolk Strangler’. My source provided me with several leads that turned out to be accurate, and when a reporter called Suffolk Police with an enquiry, a Press Officer said, ‘Call Martin Brunt. He knows everything before we do.’ This quote was reported by a columnist in The Times. I’ve used it in my book, and it’ll probably be on my grave!

‘There is one instance where I was reporting from a church, where I was likened to Alan Partridge. I understand why people find it ridiculous!’

There have been equally bad quotes, as there have been occasions when I’ve been made to look a bit foolish. There is one instance where I was outside a church, and my report has been likened to those made by Alan Partridge. I understand why people on social media find it ridiculous! I don’t take myself too seriously!

BOOK OF REVELATIONS

I think it’s a cliche that every journalist has a book in them. I never thought about writing one – although people suggested I should –until now, in the twilight of my career. I feel privileged to do a job I love, having had the opportunity to travel the world to meet fascinating people and cover topical events. Because I’m still reporting for Sky News, there have been things I’ve withheld, to protect certain sources, but I felt it was best to write the book while I still had a public profile. Still, I hope it is informative, engaging, yet ultimately entertaining. I have tried to take readers behind the stories, offering a new perspective on what happened, while also exploring our fascination with crime.

The book is called No One Got Cracked Over The Head For No Reason: Dispatches from a Crime Reporter. The quote came from John Stevens, former Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service. There had been a demonstration outside parliament at Labour’s plans to introduce a ban on foxhunting, and when the protest turned violent, the police drew batons. During a press briefing, the commissioner was asked why his officers lashed out. He was usually very articulate, but on this occasion, he came out with this surprising quote. Afterwards, he jokingly put The Daily Mail reporter who asked the question in a headlock. It was in jest, yet illustrates the close relationship that used to exist between top brass at Scotland Yard and the press.

You can’t imagine that happening now, in the aftermath of the Leveson Inquiry. My book reflects on that changing relationship and its impact on crime reporting. One of my big beefs about reporting today is that too much

is done from the office. Reporters should be out meeting people, making contacts based on trust.

The book isn’t troubling the bestsellers list yet, but I hope it’ll be a slow burner. I spoke at the Lewes Speakers Festival and CrimeCon UK in London, and attended a book signing in Ely, Cambridgeshire. I’ll also be attending the Isle of Wight Literary Festival in October. I found such events to be quite daunting initially, as strangely, I don’t like being the centre of attention. But I understand that people have invested in the book and I needed to commit to marketing it properly.

It isn’t going to make me a fortune, but if nothing else, it is something to show my children and grandchildren, and perhaps explains to them why I missed birthdays,

holidays and anniversaries. I’m chuffed that I’ve written it and seeing it published has given me a sense of achievement. I just hope others enjoy it too!

FRESH BREW

BROLLY BREWING BRING FAMILY FARM FEEL TO INDUSTRIAL ESTATE

Brolly Brewing was founded in 2017 by husband and wife, Brook and Holly Saunders. The brewery was based on a farm in Wisborough Green, where they organised the annual Brollyfest music and beer festival, and established a fanbase for its unfiltered craft beers. As Brolly moves into a new home in Horsham, we meet the founders to find out more…

Why move to town?

Brook: We have been looking at Horsham for a long time, as we live in the town and it’s time to take the brewery to the next level. But we needed an industrial unit that was both central to Horsham and gave us the space we needed, which wasn’t easy. We almost took on the former Welton’s brewery site in Foundry Lane, but the deal fell through. Then, we heard Chapeau! Brewing Co was closing and the location was ideal. There are lots of houses within walking distance and potentially customers from the industrial estates around us. There are bus stops nearby and it’s only a 10-minute walk from Horsham and Littlehaven train stations. Having been isolated in a rural village for so long, we wanted to be somewhere that people could access our beer more easily.

How have you made the place your own?

Holly: We’ve not stopped working since we picked up the keys in March. One of our first jobs was to lay down a new hard floor and drainage to accommodate the brewing tanks, which we hauled from the farm and lifted into the unit with a crane. Most taprooms focus predominantly on production, using makeshift tables and chairs for customers, which are squeezed around the brewing tanks. That works for some, but we didn’t want to create a novelty experience that people might only try once. We want people to return regularly, so we’ve put a lot of effort into making our taproom more like a pub. We have a lovely bar, with long wooden beams supplied by West Sussex Antique Timber in Wisborough Green. We have previously worked with them on The Billi Tap in Billingshurst, which we run separately, in partnership with Little Monster Brewing Company. Interior designer Jane Fitch helped with the look and layout, while our brilliant builder, Alex of Griffin Builders, made the wall behind the bar, as well as tables from upcycled scaffolding planks. We also commissioned my father to make a Toad-inthe-hole table, a traditional Sussex pub game where you throw brass coins into hole.

You have had some financial assistance…

Brook: To fund this project, we ran a Crowdfunder campaign that raised about £20,000. About 120 people made a contribution to the fund. Some of those are friends and family who have followed us from the beginning, while others discovered Brolly during the pandemic. We ran a Brolly Beer Truck delivery service during lockdown and that helped us get to know more people in the local area. Our customers appreciated the service and it even inspired a new beer, Truck Life. In a Crowdfunder campaign, you can pledge rewards in return for support. So, we organised a special opening night for those who donated, and some contributed more to have their name immortalised on our new wall, alongside others who have been on this journey with us.

Why do you attract such strong support?

Holly: I’m sure Brook will say it’s because of the beer! It is partly that, but I think people like that we’re a family business. Our two daughters, Poppy and Pearl, are part of the Brolly story too. In Wisborough Green, we had a big field and parents loved to come down and enjoy a beer while the children ran around having fun. We are now in a very different location, but we hope we can maintain that same feel and welcome many families here. Being inclusive has always been

important to us, which is why we’ve built a low bar that is wheelchair accessible, and have disabled toilets, as well as baby changing facilities.

What kind of beers do you make?

Brook: Our beer is unfiltered, so maintains more flavour and aroma from the hops, malts and yeast. Some of our beers use traditional Sussex brewing methods, but we also make modern, hoppy, juicy beers that have been key to the

craft beer renaissance. We have a core range of about a dozen beers, including two named after our daughters, Popsicle (3.8% New England Pale Ale with a delicate coconut and pineapple flavour) and Little Pearl (award-winning, 4% milk stout). We have several lower ABV pale ales with between 3% to 4% alcohol, as well as an oatmeal porter (Aurora Brollyalis), a Sussex bitter (Lowfold Wissy), and a brown ale (How Now). Many more are available for a limited period or brewed in certain seasons, with our latest being Brollyhead (3.8% Golden Ale), a tribute to one of our favourite beers, Hophead, which used to be produced locally by Dark Star.

Will the taproom sell anything beside beer?

Holly: We need to create an experience that is not just about beer if we are to attract a broader range of customers. It’s very easy for people to buy their drink from a supermarket and enjoy it on a comfy sofa at home. If we’re going to encourage them out, we need to create a good atmosphere and offer a different experience. We make a lovely beer, but the taproom will also offer wine, spirits and cocktails. The Horsham Cellar has helped us to create the

wine menu, which includes local wines from House Coren, while taproom manager Ben Wilton is a skilled mixologist and has put together the cocktail list using only fresh ingredients.

Is it becoming harder for microbreweries to survive?

Brook: The craft beer revival that we’ve seen in the past decade or so has led to the market becoming quite saturated. Rises in the cost of electricity and raw supplies has made it even harder, which is why we’re seeing pubs and breweries – even well-known brands –struggling financially. But there are still opportunities to carve out a niche in the market and we hope that by offering a different kind of beer and drinking experience in a family-friendly taproom, we can provide something unique to the people of Horsham.

THE FRUITS OF LABOUR

Families flocked to the Pick Your Own fields at New House Farm, Old Crawley Road, Horsham to enjoy fresh strawberries in June. As well as running the farm shop and tea rooms throughout the year, the Walton family host seasonal events, including craft fairs and summer sunflowers. But for many, strawberries are the annual highlight. They arrived a little late this year due to a lack of rain, but there was once again high demand, especially from families with young children!

New House Farm Shop and Tea Room is located in a beautifully renovated 16th Century barn in a quiet spot on the rural outskirts of Horsham. People come from all over to enjoy our cafe and local produce.

The strawberries at New House Farm were planted in two stages this year. The first plants ripened early in June, but the long dry spell slowed the progress of the second batch, which needed more rain to ripen. Lucie Walton said: ‘In farming, there are always variables, mostly dictated by weather. This year, there was a short gap between the first batch ripening and the later plants being ready. It is just nature taking its course, and part of the challenge is getting the timing right!’

Strawberry plants have a limited life cycle and after four years, begin to lose their vigour. Re-planting in the same soil can cause disease, so an entirely new area has to be prepared. Lucie said: ‘In the first year of planting, they don’t give much fruit, but the second and third years usually result in a good crop. In the

fourth year, we also plant a new field and leave it for a year, so we don’t miss a summer of picking. There is a constant rotation!’

‘One of our challenges is to keep the Pick-Your-Own sites close to the farm shop, to make it accessible to customers. For all these reasons, it isn’t the most economic use of land, which is why few places offer fruit picking to the public these days. However, it is very rewarding for us, as it attracts many families to the farm shop and helps create special memories.’

NEED FOR SPEED

MAKING MEMORIES FOR CHILDREN AT SHIPLEY SOAPBOX DERBY

The Shipley Soapbox Derby was staged for the second time on Saturday 3 June. Hosted by Shipley CE Primary School, the event attracted a large crowd, who cheered competitors of all ages as they flew down the short downhill track. AAH was there to speak to some of the star performers, as well as organiser Sarah Cuthbertson…

LIGHTS OUT!

The Shipley Soapbox Derby is the brainchild of Sarah Cuthbertson, Chair of the PTA at Shipley CE Primary School. Having long been a fan of the Red Bull Soapbox Race, which has been held in cities across the world since 2000, Sarah had the idea of utilising the gentle slope of School Hill in the rural village to host an event that children could participate in.

Sarah said: ‘Somebody told me it would be impossible to organise, but once that gauntlet had been thrown down, I was determined to make it happen! The Headteacher, Mrs Jen Harvey, was incredibly supportive, and trusted me to go through every safety detail with a fine-tooth comb. We secured insurance and

organised medical support, just in case there were any crashes, and held the inaugural derby in 2022.’

‘Unbelievably, we had 28 soapboxes taking part, which far surpassed our expectations, and hundreds – if not thousands - of people came to watch. It was in the wake of Covid, when people were eager to get out of the house and support community events. Lockdown had given us all the chance to reflect on what was important, and we all wanted to spend more time with our families, which contributed to an amazing atmosphere.’

WATER HAZARD

This year, the number of entries dipped slightly to 19, without the novelty of last year’s event. However, it still drew a big crowd, even though it coincided with the FA Cup Final. The organisers resisted the temptation to make the course more challenging, although the ‘Crocodile Swamp’ near the finish line saw competitors having to steer through a water hazard, with keen youngsters firing pistols from the roadside.

Sarah said: ‘We have categories for children and adults, who might have better resources when it comes to building a soapbox. Some of the adults in the ‘Wacky Racers’ category can be very competitive, even wanting to check their times. We have to remind them that this is a family event, hosted by a primary school with about 70 children, and our chief timekeeper is a teacher with a stopwatch. It isn’t the Red Bull Soapbox Derby! The course is designed so that children can compete and this year we had five pupils from the school taking part, with one being only five-years-old. The youngsters are often the bravest, flying fearlessly down the hill.’

RUNNING A BATH

When it comes to prizes, it isn’t all about speed. While time taken to complete the course is important, there are other factors for judges to consider. There is an entertainment element, with some teams performing comedy skits or dance routines (one crew member even performed ‘The Worm’) before a run. Design is important too, and all the karts are inspected by chief scrutineer Clive Richardson, who has taken part in several soapbox derbies.

Zach Linfield, 11, is a pupil at Castlewood Primary in Southwater. He was one of the stars of last year’s event, behind the wheel of a Postman Pat kart, and starred again in 2023 in a Mr Bean Mini. He also performed a comedy routine, earning praise from the judges.

Zach said: ‘When I talked to my dad about converting last year’s kart into something new, we thought Mr Bean’s car would be funny. It took more than 20 hours to finish, but my dad is an engineer, so that helped! We were just here to have fun, and were not too worried about winning again, but I think our run was even quicker than last year!’

Another star performer was Lewis Kemp, a pupil at Burgess Hill Academy. Lewis dared to take on the jump and succeeded in getting all four wheels off the ground. He said: ‘I made the kart with my dad, using an old bath tub that we found for free. Then we painted it the colours of Michael Schumacher’s Ferrari, with the number 47. We had a good run, although the front got a bit smashed up over the jumps!’

AIR TIME

The event was well supported by local businesses, some of which made generous donations to the school. James Cuthbertson, Sarah’s husband and formerly a director of Dark Star Brewery, is now a partner at Lakedown Brewing Co, established by Roger Daltrey (The Who) in Heathfield, East Sussex. James was serving some of Lakedown’s beers in the playground, while House Coren, served glasses of its signature brand, Boco. Sussex Lamb, based in Shipley, and The Boars Head in Horsham served food, while live music by singer Jo Buckland (a former Shipley pupil) and MC Matt Carr helped ensure many people stayed for the award presentations.

The Best Blooper prize went to the Platinum Ambulance Service team, who were not only a main sponsor, but also provided emergency support. Mitchel ‘Mitch’ Smith, a member of the Platinum team, had vowed not to take part after injuring himself at last year’s event, but bravely completed the course this time. The Blooper’s prize was provided by the Co-Op, who also supplied a hamper to the winner of the children’s category, while trophies for all the classes were made especially for the derby by local company Design Woodcraft.

The children’s prize went to Charlie Challinor, who completed the course in just 35 seconds, only a second slower than the time posted by the winners in the adults class.

That was won by Ian Smith, who stepped in at short notice to drive a Mad-Max inspired kart built by Justin Ellis and Dan Howick. Dan said: ‘We like to support the event, as I run a tree surgery business and have done some work at the school. Justin built a chassis for last year’s derby and I helped out with fabrication. We adapted the kart for this year, giving it a rustic, post-apocalyptic look. We got a lot of air time over the jump, which the crowd appreciated!’

MAKING MEMORIES

Sarah is yet to decide whether there will be a third Shipley Soapbox Derby. Having previously thought that two would be enough, the success of this year’s event – which raised about £2,000 – has tempted her to organise it once more in 2024. Whatever happens, she hopes those who have taken part will take away cherished memories.

‘Soapboxes were what children used to build and play with in the days before video games and mobile phones,’ said Sarah. ‘It’s nice for

youngsters today to experience that too, building a kart with parents, friends or relatives. It brings the community together, as people chip in to help where they can, and some even share their kart to let others experience the thrill of a soapbox derby.’

‘The best thing about the day is that all the children are smiling. My daughter was the first person down the hill today, and I know that even though she takes it all in her stride, she will remember days like these and look back on it one day with great fondness.’

STRONGMAN JOEY THOMPSON’S AMERICAN DREAM

Joey Thompson from Broadbridge Heath almost lost his life in 2019 after being diagnosed with Lyme Disease. Despite losing the use of his legs, he trained to become one of England’s leading disabled strongman competitors. This September, he will fly to Florida to take on the world’s best. Here, Joey describes his journey so far…

When I was 14, I was bitten by a bug and suffered a bad reaction. For two days, I had flu, but it passed and we assumed it was just an allergic reaction. However, after that, I caught colds easily and

often felt fatigued. I learned to adapt to it, until I collapsed in 2018, during my first year at university.

I had lost the use of my legs. Tests eliminated meningitis, the most obvious explanation, but doctors couldn’t give a definitive diagnosis. Two years later, another bug bite ended up becoming infectious. By that time, the pandemic was at its peak and it was very difficult to be treated in hospital when you didn’t have COVID. Everything else was put on the backburner. Sadly, this meant my infection spread, which led to sepsis.

In July 2020, I was admitted to hospital and came close to losing my life.

Professor Chris Whitty, a consultant at the Hospital of Tropical Diseases before becoming Chief Medical Officer, confirmed that I had Lyme Disease, which is spread by infected ticks. Lyme Disease interacts with people in different ways and I have a severe form that impacts the spinal cord. I am a T-10 functional paraplegic and although I have involuntary muscle spasms, I can’t consciously move my limbs below the waist and rely solely on a wheelchair.

Feeling the pain as I renew my mortgage

So, my mortgage renewal came through. If I stay with the high street lender and don’t opt for another product, my rate will go from 0.91% to 7.49% in August! Ouch!

Unfortunately, this is a sign of the times, and with Bank Base predicted to increase again in August, don’t hesitate if you are eligible to update your mortgage. If you are on a variable or tracker rate, you are likely to have no penalties to move away and perhaps secure a fixed rate (subject to lender T&Cs). If you’re on a fixed rate already, most lenders allow you to secure your next rate up to six months before the end date. Either way, don’t delay. Rates are changing daily and any delay could mean a large increase in the rate.

GLORY

Fortunately, I responded well to antibiotics and after missing two months, returned to university to study goldsmithing. But now, I had a new motivation. I had been in hospital for a whole month and hated feeling weak and being referred to as weak. So, I made a vow that nobody would ever think of me in that way again. I worked with a personal trainer and when gyms re-opened, joined Dual Strength and Fitness at Blatchford Road Industrial Estate.

My initial focus was deadlifts and I’m now pulling over 400kg. I’m at the gym most days for at least two hours, as my aim is to become England’s strongest disabled man. I have the nickname ‘The Viking’, not only because of my beard, but also because I wear war paint during competitions!

I entered my first contest last year, which was Britain’s Disabled Strongman, in Chard, Somerset. Prior to the event, I had only pulled 340kg in the deadlift, yet managed to achieve seven successful repetitions at 400kg. I finished fifth in the S1 category, which surpassed my expectations. There was also a dumbbell medley, a 500kg sled pull and Atlas stones, ranging from 90 - 130kg. Competitors in adapted wheelchairs use a tray to protect their lap, lifting and moving stones from one platform to another.

Encouraged by the result, I stepped up my training, focusing on Atlas stones and the sled pull. My dad is an ex-firefighter and was able to gain access to a fire truck, used for training purposes, which I’ve attempted to pull. It was extremely hard, as the truck was

The Government have requested that all lenders allow you to change to interest only, or increase the term on your mortgage, for up to six months. Please think about the implications before rushing into these decisions. If you increase your mortgage term, although it may lower your current monthly mortgage payments, it will increase the amount of interest you will pay over the extended period (you do have the option to switch back to the original term if you contact the lender within six months). If you switch to interest only for six months, you won’t be paying off any of your capital debt owed during this period, you’ll just be paying the interest each month. So, you are likely to be adding on further payments at the end of the mortgage term in order to repay the difference.

Both options may be right for some customers. However, make sure you are happy with the additional payments that may result and read the small print. Not all lenders are committed to these changes, nor do some have the technology to implement them, so speak to your lender beforehand. More importantly, if you are struggling to pay your mortgage, speak to your lender immediately as they may offer the above, but also may have a range of other options, like a temporary payment deferral or part interest/ part repayment option. The right option will depend on your individual circumstances. Always seek professional advice.

full of water that sloshed around in the containers, which impacted my momentum. So, I wasn’t able to pull it more than a few yards!

I entered England’s Strongest Disabled Man at the Manchester Central Convention Complex in May 2023. It was a much bigger competition, for men and women, and the level was noticeably higher. I missed out on the podium by one point, finishing fourth, but as I had made massive progress, I was happy. I had gone there not expecting to compete for victory, but to have fun. If I finished on the

podium then great, but it’s not the end of the world.

In September, I will be competing in my first international contest, the Magnus Ver Magnusson

Adaptive Strength World Championships in Florida. Magnusson, who has been World’s Strongest Man four times, wants to raise the profile of adaptive strength competition, bringing it to

a level where it can be televised alongside events like Giants Live, a tour for leading strongman competitors. The competition is expected to attract about 300 athletes from all over the world and will give me a true gauge of my current level. I have been stepping up my training and recovery program in preparation for the competition.

It would be great if I could attract some local sponsorship or support, either financial or even to help with food! I need to consume a huge amount – up to 6000 calories

If you had told me in 2019 that in four years’ time, I would be flying off to an international competition organised by one of the world’s greatest ever strongmen, I would’ve laughed at you. But soon, that will be a reality!

GARDENERS’ WORLD FEATURES FOXGLOVE COTTAGE, HORSHAM

Terri and Peter Lefevre do not live in a grand country manor, but a modest terraced house in Orchard Road with a quarter of an acre of garden. However, Foxglove Cottage has an impressive number of plants, using an abundance of ‘upcycled’ materials.

Terri said: ‘We spend a lot of time in the garden, as I love plants and Peter is an upcycling expert. We pick up items from car boot sales and antique fairs that can be used for plants, in one way or another. These include chimney pots, milk churns,

stoneware pots, watering cans, scrubbing boards, old rollers and mowers, vintage poultry feeders and even an antique potato sack carrier. We like rusty metal and it’s nice to put second-hand or unwanted items to good use.’

VINTAGE CONCEPT

All manner of quirky objects can be found in the foliage, from rocking horses and metal plaques to vintage lobster nets and a cheese press. One of the most surprising features is a 1920s washing machine planted with white bacopa, which gives the impression of soap suds. Nearby, white verbena grows inside an old boiler, while

a old shelving display has been covered in bicycle wheels, providing an interesting feature for climbing clematis.

Peter said: ‘The garden appealed to the team at Gardeners’ World because of how we use materials. Sometimes, they feature stately homes with beautiful, manicured lawns. Ours isn’t like that, as we have a wild garden that encourages insects and bugs. It has its own beauty and gives visitors ideas for their gardens by demonstrating ways to create features within a small space.’

DEEP PURPLE

A number of small areas have a character of their own. An old vegetable plot at the rear has been transformed into a pleasant seating area defined by a metal dome –found at an antiques fair in Ardingly – which

encourages climbing plants. The dome is encircled by perennials, including foxgloves, bulbous purple alliums and three apple trees that are shielded from the couple’s dogs by a wall of watering cans. Nearby, a small pond is home to several newts, including one albino. There is great floral variety, but one plant crops up regularly: salvias.

Terri said: ‘Salvias are one of my favourites, as they’re beautiful and attract lots of bees. We have about 200 varieties, although I couldn’t name them all, as we simply choose those we like the look of. We grow Salvia ‘Mulberry Jam’ in an upcycled chair and ‘Rocking Deep Purple’ really stands out in green foliage. But there’s plenty more to see; I also love the ‘Port Sunlight’ roses, as they have a rich apricot flower.’

SHARED PASSION

Terri and Peter enjoy welcoming visitors through their involvement in the National Garden Scheme (NGS). Terri propagates many of the plants at Foxglove, particularly salvias, and sells them on Open Days. Thanks in part to Gardeners’ World, the couple welcomed 220 visitors to their previous Open Garden on the May Bank Holiday weekend.

Peter said: ‘People often say the garden is like a Tardis, but it is actually two gardens in one. When we moved here, Terri’s mum lived next door, so there was a hedge dividing the two properties. We removed it and when our children were young, we had a large lawn they could play on. As they grew up, it gradually transformed into what you see today. During spring and summer, we’re in the garden most days, so it has become a big part of our lives. It is nice to have that shared passion to enjoy in retirement. We like supporting the NGS too, as it raises money for good causes and gives us a chance to visit local gardens and maybe take away an idea or two, in the same way that we hope to inspire others to enjoy gardening.’

Further information: Foxglove Cottage, 29 Orchard Road, Horsham, RH13 5NF, is opening as part of the NGS on Wednesday 5 and Sunday 9 July, 1 – 5pm. Entry £5 (children free) with home made teas, vegan, gluten and dairy-free cakes. Group visits can be arranged in July. ngs.org.uk

ENDLESS LOVE

PASSION FOR POOLS AND HOT TUBS AT HEART OF FAMILY FIRM

Home Counties Pools and Hot Tubs is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. The business, based at Hillier Garden Centre on Brighton Road, Horsham, first established its reputation by installing Cascade pools, before broadening its appeal by offering hot tubs and innovative pool concepts. AAH visited the showroom to meet owners Craig and Gill Trusson, as well as key members of the team…

TESTING THE WATER

Home Counties was founded by Peter and Judi Burkitt in 1983. The couple launched the showroom at Hillier, where the business remains, and installed two Cascade pools, which were officially unveiled by Olympic gold medallist Duncan Goodhew. Craig Trusson joined the business in 2003 and was soon followed by wife Gill. For the next decade, they ran the business alongside the Burkitts.

Craig said: ‘Ever since I left school, I have worked in this industry, initially supplying equipment for Cascade pools. Home Counties was one of my customers and, one day, Peter talked to me about his long-term plans, which led to me joining the company as a partner.

Gill had become disillusioned with her job in education, and as we had always wanted to work together, this provided the perfect opportunity. For 10 years, we worked alongside Peter and Judi, until they retired soon after the 30th anniversary of the business in 2013. Since then, we have expanded the range of products at the showroom to meet ever-changing demands. New additions have included the Original Endless Pool, which accounts for many of our new installations and is key to the business.’

DIFFERENT STROKES

Endless Pools appeal to many people as they require less space than a conventional pool. The smallest in the range is a mere 14’ long and 7’ wide, and has been installed in converted garages and conservatories. Which might leave you wondering how you can swim more than a stroke or two! It is possible through Endless Pool’s advanced technology, which allows you to swim at your own pace in the centre of the pool while a hydraulic propulsion device creates a current through the water – adjustable to 50 speeds – which works against the body. A treadmill on the bottom also allows you to run in the water, so the pool has dual benefits.

Craig said: ‘We received a call from America, asking us to build a pool in time for the 2012 London Olympics. My initial reaction was that someone was pulling my leg, but it was a representative of Endless Pools, which was working on a project with British Triathlon. To encourage people to take up triathlon, the sport’s governing body wanted an exhibit in Hyde Park, where the Olympic triathlon was held, so that visitors could try all three disciplines. They could easily replicate the running and cycling parts with static bikes and treadmills, but swimming was more of a challenge. So, they contacted Endless Pools, who needed us to install it.’

‘We wondered if it was possible, but one of the most remarkable things about Endless Pools is that every single component fits through a standard door. You don’t need cranes, as it can all be carried by hand. We’ve even built one on a roof terrace in Notting Hill, carrying parts up in a lift! We built the pool in Hyde Park and were amazed not only by the product, but the public’s reaction to it. The triathlete, Alistair Brownlee, had used one to aid his recovery from an Achilles injury, and this helped highlight how an Endless Pool could be used by elite competitors. However, the concept

57

had much broader appeal. Others enjoy swimming for fun and general fitness, but would prefer to do it in the comfort of their own home, as opposed to a leisure centre. If they don’t have space for a traditional pool, the Endless Pool provides an alternative.’

‘After the Olympics, Endless Pools asked us to install another exhibit for the 2013 World Triathlon Championships in London. By then, we had seen enough to want the brand at our showroom in Horsham, so we came to an agreement and have been an official Endless Pools supplier ever since.’

THE JET SET

Home Counties has also supplied two leading American brands of hub tub – Garden Leisure and Cove – since its dedicated hot tub showroom opened in 2007. Garden Leisure has a wide selection of energy-efficient and long-lasting tubs, from the 334L (three seats and 34 jets) to the 696L (which has 96 jets). Some models come with a lounger that allows you to stretch out across the tub, which others sacrifice such luxury for extra seats.

Mark Daniels, Sales Manager, said: ‘Every product offers something different in terms of seating arrangement, jets, lighting and finish. Some jets offer a full rotation, massaging into the small of your back, while others are more

focused on overall body comfort. One of the most enjoyable aspects of a hot tub is moving around to find the spot most comforting to you and adjusting the air on each individual seat.’

‘We certainly had a peak during the pandemic. Pool sales increased a little, but hot tubs went through the roof and we had a record year. The market has returned to normal levels, although people do worry about energy prices, which are fortunately coming down again. Our products are very well insulated and, for an average home, the running cost equates to less than buying a cup of coffee a day.’

‘Something that is underestimated is the positive impact a hot tub can have on a family’s wellbeing. We find that families who

VINYL COLLECTION

Cascade Pools remains a core part of Home Counties’ business. Originating in the US, the pools utilise a unique water distribution system which ensures heated and treated water is distributed to the bottom of the pool, providing improved energy efficiency. The pools are made with multi-cellular, synthetic resin wall panels which come with a lifetime guarantee, and are finished with a vinyl lining.

Dave Tuppan, Service Manager, who has worked at Home Counties for over 20 years, said: ‘Cascade pools are a great and established product, and the two we’ve had on site for 40 years are testament to that! They are not for everyone and we receive enquiries for other types of pool – such as those with vanishing point edging – that we are not specialists in. However, Cascade Pools are not only cost effective compared to other construction methods, but also very efficient in terms of water conservation, heating and maintenance.’

‘Servicing is a big part of our business too. People don’t use outdoor pools all year round, so we typically treat the water before the pool is covered up in September, or October if we have an Indian summer, then prepare them again in spring, ready for use. Customers often take care of the regular water and filtration checks themselves, as we stock all supplies here, but we can manage that too when required, and we also offer maintenance and refurbishment services.’

MAKING A SPLASH

The experience of the staff has helped Home Counties scoop many awards and accolades. They are a nine-time winner of a SPATA gold award (Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association) and were the first UK company to win a EUSA (European Union of Swimming Pool and Spa Associations) award in 2015. They are also a Which? Trusted trader with a five-star rating for customer service.

Craig and Gill are now looking to spend more time away from the business as they approach retirement age – coupled with the arrival of their first grandchild. However, they know the business has everything it needs to continue to be a success.

Craig said: ‘We have great landlords at Hillier Garden Centre, who have given us the space to develop the site when we’ve asked. It is also a nice place to visit, being close to town and with free parking. We are in an industry driven by the economy and weather. If the economy is poor but the weather is good, we are fine. Likewise, if the weather is poor and the economy is strong. We hope that the two won’t collide for a long time!’

Gill added: ‘Working here is a blast. We have always focused on customer service and, for us, the most important thing is not making money, but having a good quality of life. We don’t run ourselves ragged and don’t ask that of our team, as we’re very close-knit. Instead, we look after people and that’s why we receive such good reviews from customers. A huge part of that is down to the team, so even when the time comes for us to pass on the reins, we know Home Counties is in safe hands.’

WOMBLING FREE

THE RECYCLING EFFORTS OF SUSSEX GREEN LIVING VOLUNTEERS

Sussex Green Living has established various recycling schemes to prevent waste from ending up in landfill. One such scheme has been to introduce recycling drop-off points in the Horsham District. These sites are managed by a team of SGL volunteers affectionately known as The Wombles. Here, we meet some of the group in Horsham...

Who are The Wombles?

The Wombles work across the Horsham District to reduce the amount of rubbish that ends up at landfill. The group was launched by Sussex Green Living (SGL), which promotes schemes and initiatives that help protect the planet and save people money. There are about 16 ‘Wombles’ in the town and some 75 across the District, led by Chief Womble Joy Carter.

What do Wombles do?

Sussex Green Living has established 55 bins in 22 locations across the District where residents can leave items (usually in plastic bags) for ‘Wombles’ to collect. Many of these are in rural areas, including Barns Green, Thakeham, Storrington, Slinfold, Mannings Heath, Billingshurst, Warnham, Rudgwick, Southwater and Cowfold, with a lead volunteer in each location. Small teams of volunteers sort them at community hubs, before it is all taken to the main hub at the Quaker Meeting House in Horsham. It is here that the town volunteers meet on Wednesdays and Fridays to collate contributions. Rob Fryatt, one of the Horsham group, said: ‘The social side is important. We always have a good time and chat over a cuppa after each sorting session, so it never feels like a chore.’

Why can’t I just recycle using my blue lid bin?

Horsham District Council’s blue lid bin saves a lot of waste from going to landfill. It can take empty plastic bottles, plastic food trays, drink cartons, yoghurt pots, food and drink cans, newspapers and magazines, egg boxes, cereal packets, glass bottles and aluminium foil. The Council also runs a free collection service where batteries and small electricals (such as e-cigarettes and mobile phones) can be recycled, while other things like hard plastics (garden furniture, children’s toys etc) can be taken to a recycling centre. But there are many things that HDC doesn’t take, including crisp packets, sweet and biscuit wrappers, plastic film from food packaging and pet food pouches.

What can we do with them?

Usually, you can take them to supermarkets. Rob said: ‘We are fortunate in that our local Tesco, Waitrose and Sainsbury’s stores, as well as Co-Op branches, all support Recycle Now. Each store has soft-plastic recycling bins, so households can save things like bread bags, plastic carrier bags, toilet roll wrapping, pasta and rice bags, cheese, fish and meat wrappers, crisps and biscuit packets, sweets and chocolate wrappers, and plastic film packaging from food trays, and take them back to the supermarket. Many people still are not aware of just how much supermarkets can recycle.’

What is left for the Wombles?

There are items that cannot go into the blue-lid bins or back to supermarkets, but can still be

recycled. The Wombles work with TerraCycle, an innovative company established in 2012 to recycle those trickier items including pens and ink cartridges, toothpaste and toothbrushes, air freshener containers and plug-in cartridges, laundry and dishwasher pouches, as well as tubes and tubs for body creams and other personal care products, such as lipsticks, lip balms and eye shadow. Many of TerraCycle’s recycling schemes are sponsored by manufacturers, including Cathedral Cheese, Baylis & Harding and Aqua Optima, and Colgate and hello Oral Care. All of these items can be collected by the ‘Wombles’, although in truth, most of what they collect are crisp packets and sweet wrappers...

Can they not go to supermarkets?

They can, but we consume such things at such a rate that it is sometimes easier to bag them up and drop them into SGL’s local collection points for the Wombles to sort. They are happy to collect sweets, including pouches and bags, multipack packaging and individual chocolate bar wrappers. Ferrero Rocher sponsor a TerraCycle scheme for its packaging, while biscuits and snacks – including cracker boxes and wrappers – can be saved too.

What about crisps?

KP Snacks support a TerraCycle scheme that means multi-packs and single packs of crisps, nuts and popcorn can be recycled. These can be taken to supermarket collection points, but the Wombles collect them too. Rob said: ‘In the

Horsham District alone, we send about 100,000 crisp packets to TerraCycle each month. We are paid per kilogram of weight, so biscuit wrappers and crisp packets don’t generate much compared to heavier items such as pens and other stationery, water filters and toothpaste tubes. However, we are happy to save what we can from landfill.’

What do they spend the money on?

Small donations are made to the Quaker Meeting House and Horsham Unitarian Church, as they offer space to collect, store and sort materials. However, the bulk of the money is donated to good causes including the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance, William Penn School and Sussex Green Living, which runs education programmes on green initiatives.

How can I support the scheme?

Use it! Most villages (see list below) have two recycling bins (HDC blue-lid bins). One is for crisps and snacks, the other for mixed recycling. Since SGL started the scheme, over 10,000kg of single-use plastics have been hand sorted and sent for recycling, diverting from landfill and incinerators. As well as village collections, bins are available at the Sussex Green Hub, held in Horsham on the last Saturday of each month, and Steyning Farmers Market, on the first Saturday of the month. Rob said: ‘There is more to be done to raise awareness in some areas, and we hope to introduce collection points in Partridge Green and Colgate soon. There are gaps in our coverage, but the impetus needs to come from communities. We’re lucky to live in this part of the world, and we’re rightly protective of our beautiful towns and villages, but we should do more to promote a sustainable environment and protect it for future generations.’

FINAL WORD

PUB TEAM TAKES ON SNOWDON CHARITY CHALLENGE

Several years ago, I instigated an adventurous trip for the staff at Brunning & Price. The company operates about 80 pubs in England and Wales, with a focus on rural pubs serving great food. Having been founded in the north west, B & P expanded and now has many pubs in the south east, including The Black Jug.

As I have always enjoyed hiking, my idea was to bring employees from across the company together for an annual challenge, to boost morale and give them a chance to share ideas. As the pubs are dotted across the country, from the Lake District to the south coast, the opportunities for us to meet and chat are limited, so coming together in this way is a great way of making new friends and building a sense of camaraderie. It also has a positive impact on your physical and mental health.

We did the Three Peaks Challenge and the Welsh 3000 as a small group, before Covid curtailed the trips for a couple of years. When we were in a position to organise another one, I wanted to attract a bigger group, so we opened up the trip in a bid to attract people working in a variety of roles, including chefs, gardeners, front of house managers and bar staff.

Last year, we organised a trip to Wales to take on the Snowdon 6. This involves three ascents and three descents of the highest peak in England and Wales, following a different trail each time. We had 47 people taking part last October, from 20 B & P pubs across the country. However, we were beaten back by dreadful weather only 200 metres from the summit. It wasn’t safe to continue, but despite that, we raised £15,000 for The Burnt Chef Project, a not-for-profit Social Enterprise that promotes wellbeing in the hospitality industry.

There was a feeling of unfinished business, so on Tuesday 20 June, 45 of us returned to the mountain to have another go! Having stayed nearby, we boarded a bus at about 1.45am and by 3am were on our first ascent. We followed the Watkin Path, as it’s the longest. It begins almost at sea level, so covers almost all 1,085m to the peak. We reached the summit just before sunrise. Our first descent was on the Miner’s Track, then we hiked up the Pyg Track, as both start at Pen-y-Pass. The second descent was on Rhyd Ddu Path, one of the quieter trails, before we went up the Snowdon Ranger Path and finally followed the Llanberis Path, the most popular trail, down for the final descent. Each offered its own challenges and views, and fortunately we had perfect weather. We finished in the late afternoon, when the sun was still shining.

We stayed together for the first climb, but after that broke into several groups, hiking at a different pace with the help of guides. The first group finished at about 6pm and the final lot completed the last descent at 8.30pm. It was a fantastic effort from everyone, as we walked 24 miles, with 9,000ft of ascending.

Even after raising so much during last year’s attempt, the team has raised about £8,000 this year. We supported two charities. The first is Mountain Rescue England and Wales, as they provide incredible voluntary support in emergency situations, particularly to groups like ours. The other is Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), a cause close to our hearts, as Tizz, a highly-regarded chef at Brunning & Price, died last year of an undiagnosed heart problem.

I hope we can expand the event in future, perhaps beyond B & P to include others working in hospitality. This industry can be stressful and such challenges provide a positive experience for all involved. Of course, whenever you take part in one event, you talk about what you might do next, and many ideas have already been thrown into the ring! Whatever we do, I hope next time we can take more than 50 people for the first time.

As for The Black Jug, things are going well. Naturally, we’ve faced challenges over the last couple of years, but we have a great team and a great pub with a great garden, which is contributing to a pretty great summer!
