COVER STORY This month’s cover features Mark Davis, Chairman of Horsham Canoe Club. Mark is pictured with his kayak next to the lake at Southwater Country Park, where the club meets every Thursday evening. Alan (AAH photographer) was able to take a few photos of club members as they took to the water, as well as a group shot of them in the water, from the safety of the jetty. Most of the group then paddled out of sight to the end of the lake. Fortunately, Mark was happy to pose for this photo, with Alan’s studio light just out of shot! Other cover contenders included textile artist Vicky Glyn at her Horsham home, and welding action from Blaker’s in Adversane. ABOUT AAH AAH is an independent monthly magazine, owned by editor Ben Morris, a life-long resident of the Horsham District. GENERATION X-BOX Notes from the Editor: The perils of letting kids play outside My two sons spend a lot of time playing computer games.
Cutting through the fields is lovely. But beware the landowner...
It wasn’t all that long ago that we had a reasonable system in place. They could play X-Box for an hour-and-a-half, three days a week. But gradually, the boys altered the rules. First, that didn’t include weekends. Then it crept up to two hours. Then three. It’s a problem for many parents. I’m lucky in that my sons do have other interests; Football, kayaking, fishing and cycling. They even walk the dog sometimes, when we guilt-trip them into it! But every venture outside - as well as every chore - is used by the boys as a free pass to then spend the rest of the day playing FIFA (a football game) or Fortnite (where players dress up and shoot each other.) As a grown-up, I’m duty-bound to have a rose-tinted perception of my childhood. I exaggerate my sporting prowess and tales of mischief, and let isolated events represent my youth. For example, my grandad had a kit car that I could drive around the fields when I was 12-years-old. I’ve used this to portray a care-free youth, but in truth, I drove it three times and never got out of second gear. But there’s one thing that I’m sure today’s children largely miss out on, and that’s boredom. Partly, that’s because parents can be too eager to fill their days with what we deem to be meaningful experiences. But mainly, it’s down to computer games and mobile phones. They’re too good! And any hint of boredom can be quashed in a matter of seconds. Which is a shame, as boredom is good. It takes you to weird and wonderful places. Just think of all the stuff you did as a child because you were bored. I spent a chunk of 1992 meticulously drawing every Formula One car on the grid, copying pictures from AutoSport. I also hunted for golf balls, traipsing through hedges and rivers along the fairways looking for lost balls, which I sold to my grandad and his friends. I’d clean them in boiling water and washing powder, then make a graph as I sorted them by brand, commentating as I went. Titleist always won, followed by Top Flite, then either Ultra or Pinnacle. Kids today also face new obstacles. There’s social media, of course, where the sort of naive things that teenagers have always
said can now linger in a virtual cloud and pop-up many years later to tarnish your reputation. But there are other pitfalls too. Like doorbells... A few Sundays back, the bell rang and by the time I opened the door, nobody was there. It was kids playing Knock Down Ginger - knocking on doors and running off. No big deal. Back to mowing the lawn. My youngest son, 13, was more committed to catching the culprits though. He hid behind a wheelie bin and - lo and behold - the kids came back. Turns out he knew the boys from school and as he had nothing better to do, headed out to play with them. I didn’t even know he’d gone until I heard shouting up the road. A neighbour was giving the three boys a telling off after catching one of them ringing the bell of an elderly woman’s house. And quite right too. They skulked away looking rather sheepish as the man told them to grow up. I thought that would be the end of their bell-ringing wrong-doing, but the boys made other calls. They hadn’t accounted for doorbells with built-in cameras though. And so, later that evening, a snapshot of one of them was posted on the village Facebook page. A residentturned detective had shared the image, like a local version of Crimewatch. I spoke to my son sternly about it, although if I’m honest, some of my anger stemmed from fear of embarrassment. It could so easily have been my boy’s mug shot on Facebook. And what would the neighbours think!
At about the same time, my eldest son, 15, jumped on a bike and headed to Thakeham to see a friend. As the crow flies, it’s not far from our house in Ashington, but it’s awkward to get to. You have to ride along narrow roads and there are steep slopes near the mushroom farm which are often used by lorries. It’s dangerous and I wouldn’t want him riding it alone. But naturally, we try to encourage him to get out as often as possible. Fortunately, there’s a direct route up through Warminghurst, across fields. It means he can get to Thakeham in 15 minutes, often without coming across a single car. The problem, however, is that the route takes in a public footpath through farmland, and the landowner doesn’t take kindly to cyclists. If you thought they might make an exception for a young lad, you’d be wrong. My son was told in no uncertain terms to turn around. At the time, he was about 150m from Thakeham Church... I do sympathise with the landowner. During lockdown, there’s been far more people using the footpath. I’m one of them. It’s not busy, but 100 people using it each day must seem like a deluge when it used to be so quiet. And of course, if you let one kid on a bike go, it’ll probably lead to more. Nonetheless, we need to cut kids a little slack, don’t we? We remind them of our happy childhoods, yet deny them the same freedom. Or maybe I’ve got it all wrong. Perhaps nothing’s really changed at all. After all, isn’t breaking the rules and being told off by adults just part of growing up?

Pippa’s Guardians care for international students at boarding schools across the country. We find supportive and caring families who can offer a welcoming and caring home for students during school holidays. Students need their own bedroom with a place to study. Being part of a family and experiencing UK family life enhances students’ study and helps improve their English language. Becoming a host family is a rewarding and enjoyable experience for the family too; providing the opportunity to really make a difference to a student whilst they are studying in England, in many cases a very long way from home.

Washington author Kevin Newman’s new book, Pond Puddings and Sussex Smokies - Sussex's Food and Drink’ is available through Amberley Publishing. Local cookery books were filled with recipes for dense dishes, including Chichester Pudding, Sussex
Blanket Pudding, and the intriguingly named Sussex Pond Pudding. Kevin explores these recipes, as well as food and drink producers, markets, and food-themed events. Find out how ‘Dirty Arthur’ became dirty, how a member of the clergy ended up as a Fijian feast, and why ‘Black-Eyed Susan’ hasn’t been in a fight. The shop, at 11 West Street, opened its doors on 24 May, having closed for several months while work was carried out. Melanie Wakefield, who co-owns the business with brother Dominic, says the response from customers has been overwhelming. “The first word from most people who enter is ‘Wow!’ Then they turn around to see the bar and look even more amazed, as it’s not what you expect. People have said that it looks and feels like a Bond Street boutique, which is quite humbling. We’ve been planning this for a long time, considering every detail in depth. We have visited leading retailers in London for inspiration, not only in terms of layout and decor, but also for ideas on enhancing the experience for our customers.” “The journey we’ve been through - from stripping back to bare walls to where we are now with final touches being made to brass trimmings - has been incredible and the results have exceeded all our expectations.”
The back of the shop has been transformed too (All images ©Toby Phillips Photography)
ATTENTION TO DETAIL While the overall appearance of the shop creates an immediate and striking impact, it’s the finer details that highlight the dedication and hard work behind the project. As well as working with Innovare Design, a London-based retail design specialist, Wakefields partnered with several Horsham businesses. Sussex Lighting provided art deco chandeliers and free-standing lights, while Martin Leadbeater Carpentry & Joinery not only impressed with his craftsmanship, but worked seamlessly with shop fitters to overcome any obstacle. The bespoke cabinets are finished with brass or bronze, while gold-leaf walls have been created by Shoreham-based gilder Charlotte Kenward, who stepped in when gilded wallpaper from Japan was held-up in the Suez Canal. Complimentary drinks are served at the new bar, with customers offered tea, coffee, bubbles or even Horsham Spirit Gin. Regular customers may spot that the drinks cabinet has been part of the furniture ever since Wakefields moved into the premises. It was originally used by Boots the Chemists and has now been painted black for the next chapter in its story!

“It’s a nod to our heritage,” said Melanie. “Wakefields is synonymous with Horsham, having been founded in 1911. John Wakefield, my great-grandfather, was a watchmaker at Cramp’s before setting up his own shop in town and moving to the current premises in 1935. So, during the renovation, we put up a hoarding outside to show the timeline of the shop. This generated a great deal of interest, along with photo teasers posted on social media. Now, people are coming in not to buy, but because they’re intrigued!” “That’s important to us, as everybody has a story about Wakefields. It might be where they had their ears pierced as a child, or where their parents bought engagement rings. We go back generations with some families and people feel they own a little bit of Wakefields. We are proud of that history and heritage, and wanted to invest back in the community as we plan on being here for many more years to come.”
A MEMORABLE ROLEX EXPERIENCE Looking at the shop from outside, you would be forgiven for thinking little has changed. Step inside though and Wakefields opens out like a Tardis, with inventive use of space enhancing the retail experience. Wakefields became an Official Rolex Retailer in 2012 and enjoys a successful partnership with the luxury Swiss watch brand. The larger and enhanced Rolex showroom ensures that Wakefields can continue to provide their clients with unique

experiences. Melanie said: “Like all purchases, buying a Rolex should be a special occasion. Our expert sales team must have extensive training before they are even allowed to handle and sell a Rolex watch. To help with interest and demand, we have three new dedicated areas for Rolex enquiries.” “The entire store has been enhanced to provide a relaxed and memorable experience for all jewellery purchases, with an enlarged sales area that was redeveloped by converting our storage and staff facilities. There’s also an area dedicated to ear-piercing. This has been lovely, as we’re seeing mothers and daughters coming in together, sharing a memorable experience.”
has an unbeatable range of necklaces, pendants, bracelets, earrings, gifts and accessories for every budget. “We’ve always been a jeweller that serves the whole community,” said Melanie. “Repairs are still a vital part of the business and we’ve run an in-house workshop for more than a century. Our technicians have never been busier, as we’ve taken in about 1,000 items for repair in the first month since re-opening, as the closure combined with lockdown created a backlog. People took the chance to go through old jewellery, perhaps heirlooms they rarely wear and want to transform into something new that they can enjoy, while maintaining its sentimental value. Some simply want to treat themselves, perhaps because they’ve not been able to go on holiday. There’s high demand for wedding rings too, and we’re having to alter engravings as they include dates for weddings that were postponed!” This demand, coupled with a continued evolution towards a more immersive retail experience, means that it’s sometimes advisable to book ahead.

Melanie says: “We welcome everyone and nobody should feel intimidated about coming in. It’s the same shop it has always been. However, if you did want to sit down and get a valuation on a piece of jewellery, or discuss a bespoke design, then we advise booking ahead to avoid disappointment. That way, we can offer a professional service to everyone.”
Wakefields also sells watches by other leading brands, including Tudor, as well as bespoke engagement and wedding rings. It

Artist Focus: Vicky Glyn Sometimes, it’s hard for a casual observer to appreciate the hours behind an artist’s creations. But that’s not the case with Horsham-based textile artist Vicky Glyn. The intricate mesh of colours and shapes is immediately apparent in works such as ‘Presence,’ made from over 1,000 pieces of fabric, cut from old shirts and pyjamas. And with every piece carefully selected for its shape, light, colour and tone, it’s a timeconsuming process... “There’s a degree of arithmetic and geometry when it comes to organising the patterns,” says Vicky. “You need to understand what shapes fit together and work with the fabric to blend or contrast colours and form distinctive patterns. It’s a matter of piecing segments together like a jigsaw to see what works.” “I like to include a mixture of big and small patterns in each piece, to offer a variety of scale. Lines can create a suggestion of movement, but they needs to be balanced with quiet patterns, otherwise it looks disorganised. I try to create a perception of light too, achieved through colour.”
“Picking the right fabrics to begin with is key. I buy them from fairs and specialist shops, picking designs that catch my eye and storing them until the right project comes along.”
ABSTRACT STYLES While some textile artists focus on bed spreads or throws for practical uses, Vicky’s focus has traditionally been on wall hangings, which offer a wider creative scope. She says, “When you make bed spreads, materials need to be light and washable and that can restrict you to a basic pattern. I prefer to use high-quality cotton, as the focus is on displaying the textile.” When it comes to ideas, inspiration can come from anywhere. Initially, most of Vicky’s work was in the Persian style. However, that has evolved, and now her textiles are often more abstract, featuring shapes in brighter tones.
20
Some of Vicky’s designs are more abstract in style
“The world can influence you without you realising and ideas bury themselves in your consciousness,” says Vicky. “I used to live in a high-rise apartment block in London and found that squares often appeared in my work. And I would stare out at my triangular-shaped lawn and suddenly green triangles popped up in designs!”
EPIPHANY MOMENT Vicky took an unorthodox route to becoming an artist. She was a lawyer for 25 years, maintaining some interest in embroidery throughout. But it was only after being made redundant that she embarked on a more creative path. At the Knitting and Stitching Show at the Alexandra Palace, the biggest textile fair in the UK, Vicky had an epiphany that would inspire her journey. Eventually… “I saw an amazing patchwork wall hanging. It looked like the whole world in one rug and I thought, “That’s what I want to do!” I bought the fabric and design book, took it home and it got buried in the wardrobe for ten years. It wasn’t until I was made redundant that I found it. I gave it a go but made it too small. As it transpired, I rather liked the smaller piece, so continued in that vein, buying patterns and making them half size.”
“I saw the most amazing patchwork wall hanging that looked like the whole world in one rug, and thought, “That’s what I want to do!”
Vicky has since exhibited in the UK and overseas, including Dubai, with solo exhibitions at The Framers’ Gallery in the West End and at Holy Trinity Church, Sloane Square. After moving to Horsham from Greenwich, Vicky has also been involved with Horsham Artists and is teaming up with other artists for the Horsham Art Trail in July. She also displays work at BN5 in Henfield, a shop run by local creatives. However, perhaps her artistic career highlight was when a piece was selected for an exhibit at the Victoria & Albert (V&A) Museum in London.

‘The V&A held a competition for adult craft students called ‘Inspired By...’ It involved making something inspired by an item in the V&A, and I chose a diamond in their jewellery section, re-imagining it as a textile piece. I was so pleased to have been selected!” “However, textile art isn’t as popular as it once was. There was a craze for wall hangings in the early part of the century, but trends change. As hangings are difficult to sell, I also make throws for sofas, with matching cushions, as well as smallers
accessories, such as bags. I feel I’m on the verge of a transitional period as an artist, which is exciting, as I don’t know what direction it will take me!”

IF WE DIVORCE, DO WE HAVE
TO GO TO COURT? A divorce in the jurisdiction of England and Wales is a formal set of legal proceedings and involves an application to the Family court, in the form of a divorce petition. The vast majority of divorces proceed on what is known as an undefended basis. In essence, this means that it is agreed that the marriage is over. Under the current law one of five facts has to be relied upon to prove that the marriage has irretrievably broken down. This can lead to unnecessary difficulties. Provided the divorce proceeds on an undefended basis then it will either be dealt with on paper or as part of the new online divorce process (which is not yet entirely online). All divorces in England and Wales are now dealt with at 1 of 4 regional divorce centres. The regional divorce centre for the South-East of England is Bury St. Edmunds. In the ordinary course of event, there are no court hearings within an undefended divorce. In practice, it is therefore very unlikely that you would have to physically attend a court hearing in respect of your divorce. Typically, the

FAMILY ROO Tucked away along a rural lane in West Chiltington, Village Nurseries is truly a family-run business. It has been run for 26 years by Peter Manfield, ably assisted by sister Carol and mum Sheila. Carol’s husband Nigel Barber works there too, as do daughters Sally Primmett and Lindsey Barber. Because of the complex layout of West Chiltington (like a warren of narrow lanes), even local residents may never have stumbled across the nursery. Yet the
family’s continued presence and combined horticultural knowledge means that it has many loyal customers, both in the village and beyond. Sally says, “We run a popular hanging basket service that is unique, certainly locally anyway. Individuals and businesses bring their hanging basket to us, or pick a new one, and we plant fresh flowers whenever they need them. We always ask about their personal preferences with regard to colour and style, and whether it’ll be hung in a sunny or shady spot.”
“My grandmother still loves to make up the baskets at the age of 84, as she’s done it for certain customers since we first opened and knows what they like. We know who prefers pastoral colours with pale pinks, mauves and whites, or who likes free-flowing baskets with brightly coloured geraniums. Often, we can find people’s basket without even looking at the label! People appreciate that personal service. We keep costs low too, as we grow our own plants, rather than buying them all from nurseries across the country or beyond.”

BUSINESS ROOTS Peter founded the business over 25 years ago, having studied horticulture at college before working at garden centres in the south. He recalls, “We were looking around for somewhere to start our own business and found this site. It was just a glasshouse with overgrown flowers, but it had potential, being located in a pleasant, affluent area that serves a significant population. Gradually, we’ve been able to expand across the whole site.” “As a nursery rather than a garden centre, we grow and sell our own plants, buying in very little apart from some of the more exotic varieties. We are restricted in terms of space, but manage to grow a wide range of seasonal plants.” “If you want garden furniture, there are other places that can offer that. Our focus is solely plants. We put them in pots that are the right size and use the best biological controls when growing them. We keep things

ever, but gardeners are increasingly exploring other plants to create wilder habitats that encourage wildlife. Peter says, “Colour variety has improved over the years, which is down to better propagation and growing conditions. So, there’s never been more choice for gardeners. Some prefer a formal look, but there’s strong demand for plants like lavender as they attract bees, which have been in decline. Wildlife is increasingly on people’s mind when it comes to gardens. We also have people coming to us for peat-fee compost. Garden centres have committed to selling only peat-free in the future, but we’ve been doing it since 2014.” Nurseries and garden centres have not been as badly-hit by Covid as some other retail businesses. During lockdown, many people spent more time in the garden and took the chance to enhance their surroundings. “We’ve benefitted from that,” says Sally. “People were stuck at home and had the time to fully appreciate whatever outdoor space they have. Many took the chance to improve it with new trees and plants. Hopefully, this has led to more people caring for their gardens in a way they perhaps weren’t before.” 28

WELD RENOWNED Business Focus: Blaker Specialist Welding Repairs Ltd

No two days are the same at Blaker, a specialist welding company in Adversane, near Billingshurst. For more than a century, it has been renowned for repairing and fabricating parts for just about anything that moves, from steam engines to Spitfires. Today, the company finds itself in a transitional period, adapting to meet the needs of a changing world.
THE WHEEL DEAL You might not have heard of it, but Blaker is one of the longest-established businesses in the Horsham District, having been founded as Blaker Engineering Co. Ltd in 1886. Founded by Alexander Blaker, it was initially based in Islington, London. Blaker specialised in automobile engineering and was instrumental in developing the innovative Hallé Spring Wheel, which received a gold medal at the Liege Universal Exhibition in 1905. In the 1930s, the company bought a blacksmith’s shop in Dial Post and launched a new axle and chassis repair business, Blaker Specialist Welding Repairs Ltd. This grew steadily and during the Second World War, the skills of its engineers were in great demand. War-time work included fixing

components for Hurricane and Spitfire plane engines, as well as tank transporters and reconnaissance vehicles for Canadian Army units stationed nearby. By 1946, Blaker employed about 30 people and was the ‘go-to’ company for machinery and vehicle repairs, with its vans carrying out mobile repairs across the South of England. A middle workshop was added in Dial Post in the 1970s and used to repair lorries and earth-moving machinery. There was demand for vehicle preservation work too and Blaker became renowned as classic car specialists as well.
The Blaker Motor & Welding Company was based in London
Business Manager Robin Plater joined Blaker when the business was taken over by the Charles Muddle Group in 2005. Robin says, “For a long time, Blaker ticked along with a small team of welders at Dial Post. When the Blaker family’s long association came to an end, the business was placed on the market. Nobody expressed much interest until Stuart Muddle purchased the assets and moved the business to a unit adjacent to Charles Muddle Scrap Merchants in Adversane. Some of the team have remained throughout, and there’s nothing they don’t know about welding.”
THE ENGINE ROOM Robin was brought in to explore new commercial opportunities, which he has achieved by expanding into the recycling machinery. However, it’s Workshop Manager Simon Rawlins who drives the engine room, where the team can overcome any engineering problem. In his spare time, Simon built a half-size replica Burrell steam engine, using diesel rather than steam power. So, he’s no stranger to engineering challenges, which come in many forms at Blaker. One project was a Peugeot Type 9, introduced in 1892 as

Another job was converting a 1926 Bentley into a racing car. The chassis had been damaged in a road crash in 1933 and to be strong enough for historic racing, needed to be distorted back to its correct shape, with repair work based on the original designs. Other projects include repairing a Brough Superior 1150 motorcycle, now on display at Brooklands Museum, and a 1904 Siddeley called Daisy, believed to be the first car to drive on the famous Brooklands circuit. Simon feels that the work has changed since he first joined, but it’s always challenging. “The Dial Post site looked small from the outside, but it was like a Tardis,” he says. “Usually, we had a month’s worth of work in front of us and it was always challenging and interesting. That’s what I enjoy about the job. You could be fixing a Bentley Blower one day and helicopter rotary blades the next.”

ORIGINAL IS BEST Simon and his experienced team use specialist equipment including lathes, mills, surface grinders and radial drills to carry out wide-ranging work. Metal turning and milling projects are varied, so one milling machine alone has an eight-metre bed and can bore large holes in steel plates up to 10cm thick. It can do cylinder head skimming too, using rotating grinding stones to achieve a flat and even surface to ensure the new head gasket seals. Robin says, “We’ve been straightening bent axles for generations. The team has experience of DAF, Volvo, Scania and SAF trailer axles, as well as repairing brake drums, brake discs, flywheels, shafts and threaded items for anything from lorries to vintage cars. We’ve been skimming cylinder heads since 1935 and have repaired engines for motorbikes, HGVs and agricultural machinery. For historic vehicles, it’s important to maintain the original frame. So, owners bring us their old vehicles, be it a steam traction engine or a vintage car worth over a million pounds.”
RECYCLING GOALS

However, with demand for such work waning, Blaker is diversifying too. A recent development has been to design and fabricate recycling equipment for the scrap metal industry. Two key pieces of equipment are helping Blaker reach new commercial clients around the world. The first is the Magthro, which uses a continuous magnetic flow to separate non-ferrous metal from mixed materials, resulting in reduced levels of material ending up in landfill. The second is the Sandflo, which uses sand and high

“The next generation is not interested in veteran or vintage cars, preferring classic cars of the 1980s and 1990s.” Robin Plater revolution vibrations to separate secondary metals and minerals according to density. It’s a cost-effective way to recover aluminium and zinc, copper and brass fractions from mixed non-ferrous metals. Robin says, “From the 1950s to the 1990s, people would spend more time repairing cars, as it made financial sense. Because the way we buy cars has changed and the high cost of repairs nowadays, we can no
longer rely solely on traditional revenue streams. That’s why we are developing machinery for the recycling industry. When I started here, 90% of our business was repairs and welding, whether fixing tractors, restoring iron railings or straightening truck axles. But the demand isn’t there anymore. The next generation is not as interested in veteran and vintage cars, preferring classic cars of the 1980s and 1990s instead. So, we’ve adapted and the fabrication side has taken off. Perhaps that’s where the future of Blaker lies.” WORDS: BEN MORRIS PHOTOS: ALAN WRIGHT Further information: Unit 1 The Yard, Adversane Lane, Billingshurst, RH14 9EG Tel: 01403 783634 Email: info@blaker.co.uk www.blaker.co.uk

OARSOME FU Horsham Canoe Club develops skills on the water There’s been an increase in the popularity of water-based sports during the pandemic, with kayaks and paddleboards a common sight on local rivers. This offers some comfort to businesses such as The Kayak Coach, based on the banks of the River Adur at Ashurst, and Southwater Watersports Centre, which runs a range of activities at the Country Park.
All aspects of tree surgery, hedge cutting & garden maintenance covered. Call for your FREE quotation. Ed: 07812995475 |Carl: 07754337926 Email: thetreemensussex@gmail.com
Another group using the Country Park is Horsham Canoe Club, which is also attracting new members. The club meets every Thursday evening, offering novices the chance to learn how to kayak and canoe safely, while also catering for those with more experience. Club Chairman Mark Davis says, “We have something for everybody. I have made
many friends at the club and after years of kayaking, we travel all over the UK and even beyond to visit white-water rivers, as that’s our passion. But we take great satisfaction from introducing new people to kayaking too. My teenage daughter enjoys it and brings along her friends from college. It’s far better for them to be out enjoying themselves on a beautiful lake, than being sat at home in front of a phone screen.”
FAMILY FRIENDLY The club was established in the 1990s, initially in association with the Youth Wing at Forest School. Chris Davis, who remains Club President, organised water sport trips for local Scouts (including his son, Mark) and these led to the formation of Forest Canoe Club.
Thanks partly to funding from the Council, the club purchased boats as well as safety equipment and steadily grew, boasting over 90 members at its peak. Several of the Scouts became instructors and eventually sought more adrenaline-fuelled adventures on fast-flowing rivers and courses. But that had its downsides... “The club went through a period where most members were in their 30s or 40s and their ability was very high,” says Mark. “The club perhaps became a little elitist, in terms of the rivers we ran. We were going to white-water locations which are too dangerous for children and beginners. Something had to change for us to be more appealing to newcomers, as membership numbers were going down. So, we made the conscious
decision to increase our coaching provision and create a family environment, to encourage more young people out on to the water.”
“The lake at Southwater Country Park isn’t so shallow that you can’t turn yourself over and it has good visibility too.” Mark Davis

Below 1% Mortgages a Sign of the Times A number of lenders have recently issued mortgage rates below 1%, which has created a stir as people try to secure these rates before they are pulled. We’ve seen lenders pull rates quickly (with only a few hours notice), decreasing rates one day and increasing them the next. Sign of the times and of the fast-moving pace of the money markets.
38
The only certainty seems to be uncertainty. Lenders have previously considered more generous affordability models, clients on furlough, or those who have taken bounce back loans within their businesses. But criteria can change weekly, so what The property market is may have been agreed in vibrant and fast-changing principle a few weeks ago, might not be the same today. Ultimately, the lender has to ensure clients can afford the mortgage for the future (normally stress tested over a fiveyear period). With changes happening quickly, it is vital you get all the documentation required to the lender as quickly as possible to secure your rate and that product availability. Especially as some lenders are receiving pre-Covid volumes of business, but only with circa 70/80% of pre-covid staffing levels. This means that some lenders can be days/weeks behind and if you only provide certain items, you may find that you go to the back of the queue when the outstanding items required are submitted, which extends the delays. Most lenders will no longer prioritise the valuation of the security property. They will assess the whole mortgage application and confirm agreement to proceed before instructing the valuation. Be aware of this as Estate Agents need the valuation instructed asap. Depending on the lender you go with, this could take a few weeks. Finally, expect this to continue for some time. Not just because of the ongoing pandemic, but also due to lenders staffing levels, business volumes on the increase and the lack of stock of properties in the surrounding areas with the apparent ‘race to get a mortgage offer’ to secure the property. Who knows what may happen with products, criteria and the inevitable processing delays over the coming weeks and months, but make sure you’re dealing with a professional to ensure you have the best chance of securing the most appropriate mortgage and ultimately your dream property!
Members are taught to “roll” by experienced coaches
SPLASHING AROUND Sports Council funding allowed several club coaches to attend professional British Canoeing courses, helping to put the focus back on young people. And while the more experienced members still meet for adventurous trips away, regular club sessions are mainly about developing skills, with members working towards formal British Canoeing qualifications, including Paddlepower and 2 Star.
The club has many of its own boats in a secure lock-up by the water, available to newcomers. These range from Dynamos for children as young as eight, to bigger kayaks such as the GT and Super Sonic. Buoyancy aids are compulsory and the club has a wide selection in all sizes, although most people buy their own once they’ve caught the bug! “Southwater Country Park is the perfect spot to learn,” says Mark. “The lake isn’t so shallow that you can’t turn yourself over and
The Country Park is a great place to learn kayaking
it has good visibility too. There’s parking, a café and changing rooms, and we can store boats there too. For beginners, it’s just a matter of coming along with a towel, wetsuit (or clothes you don’t mind getting wet) and giving it a go.” “We constantly assess our members to establish where their skills place them within the Paddlepower scheme and develop targets for them over the summer. There's a focus on a different discipline each week, but there’s time for fun and games as well, as some just can’t wait to get wet! It’s really great fun and sometimes we don’t get out of the water until 9.30pm, as we’re having such a good time.’
AFFORDABLE FUN
Young members ready to take to the water
The club meets at the Country Park every week from May until September, and organises river excursions every other weekend. Some are local (the River Arun is a popular destination) while other trips may be to Dartmoor National Park or River Wey. From November, when the lake is cold and the evenings dark, sessions are held every other Sunday in the swimming pool at Cottesmore Hotel, Golf & Country

PERFECT FIT Mobility built into the fabric of Horsham Business It’s been a busy year for Tricia Jones, owner of Mobile Curtain Showroom. For 12 years, her Horsham-based business has grown through strong word-of-mouth. But during the pandemic, Tricia’s services have been more in demand than ever, with homeowners taking the opportunity to redecorate.
Unique Opportunity In 2010, Tricia was employed at a large curtain company based in Dorset, using a van to take fabric samples directly to clients in West Sussex. The company went into administration, but Tricia saw the potential to operate in a similar way, but as an independent specialist. “Even though the company didn’t survive, the concept was excellent and I believed it could work in Horsham,” says Tricia. “When you walk into a fabric shop on the high street, you’re confronted with hundreds of patterns and materials and most people don’t know where to begin. Also, when you’re looking at small fabric samples, it’s difficult to imagine how it will look in your living room with your own furniture and carpets.”
43
“So, what I do is take sample books from some of the leading designers directly to clients. At the same time, they benefit from my knowledge and experience. With all due respect, when you go into a fabric shop, staff don’t always have much experience. What I do is offer a free consultation, while keeping my prices competitive.”
Tricia Jones, Owner of the Mobile Curtain Showroom
“When I see the interior of a house and gain an understanding of the tones and layout, I can make personal suggestions.”
“Some people have a good idea of what they’re looking for. Others are not sure where to begin, so when I see the interior of a house and gain an understanding of the tones and layout, I can make personal suggestions. In that respect, there’s an element of interior design to my role, and there have been many times when the client has loved the first fabric I’ve shown them!”
“It’s an enjoyable, stress-free experience and clients can proceed with confidence, knowing they’re getting the best service from a local, independent business.”
Bold Colours Tricia uses PT (Prestigious Textiles) and Clarke & Clarke fabrics, which offer high quality in a range of patterns to suit most budgets. Some prefer to select their own
fabric and employ Tricia to have it measured, cut and fitted to the right size. And with many taking the chance to improve their home in lockdown, it’s been a busy year... “People have been improving their entire house!” says Tricia. “They’ve had the time to invest in their home, but still need expertise and my mobile service has helped as I can visit quickly and get things moving.” “People are certainly becoming bolder with their choices too. Some prefer traditional designs, but I’m seeing a lot of African influences now, with fabrics featuring exotic plants and wildlife. That’s why I have a wide range of options, from floral fabrics to those that are more contemporary.”
More Than Curtains 44
As well as curtains, voiles, swags and tails, Mobile Curtain Showroom has fabrics for bed spreads, cushions and the re-upholstery of soft furnishings, as well as Roman and Venetian blinds, hard blinds, pelmets, tracks and poles, tie-backs and hooks.
I am Tricia Jones, owner of Mobile Curtain & Blind Showroom, a unique independent curtain and blind service based in Horsham. I provide beautiful contemporary and traditional made to measure and ready made curtains, a huge range of blinds including conservatory and shutters, tracks and poles, soft furnishings and now awnings and canopies. I also offer a made to measure service which delivers curtains or blinds within 7 days of ordering.
What sets me apart from other curtain shops is that I bring the curtain and blind store to your front door in my showroom vehicle at a time to suit you, including evenings/weekends. I take away the hassle of trips to the shops to select samples of fabric and imagining what they will look like in your home.
Customer Testimonial “We are really happy with the blinds; thank you. The Romans are gorgeous, the fabric is good quality and they really look great. The conservatory blinds make the conservatory cosy - another room rather than just a conservatory that rarely gets used!” Linda Claridge, Horsham
I have over 1,000 fabrics and because samples are curtain size, you can instantly see how the fabric transforms the room, taking into account the light, colours, textures and furniture. I provide all types of curtain headings, valances, pelmets, tie backs and other soft furnishings such as cushions and bed throws as well as any type of blind, including conservatory. I offer free measuring and free sample loan. I can advise you on colour and design and give technical advice and provide professional fitting service if required. “If you’re fitting a heavy set of curtains, you need strong poles,” says Tricia. “I work with an experienced seamstress on fabrics and alterations, and with leading suppliers with my blinds and accessories, offering my clients a bespoke service. We are also very flexible, and can usually turn around an order within eight weeks.” “I have an excellent set of fitters too, who have been in the industry for 35 years and know everything there is to know about installing blinds and curtains. Sometimes, people try to do it themselves and don’t build strong enough supports. It’s sometimes best to leave the job of doing it properly to the experts!” Photos: Alan Wright Photography Further information: Tel: 07740 223377 Email: triciajones11@yahoo.co.uk www.mobilecurtainshowroom.biz mobilecurtainshowroom

STEYNING MUSEUM Volunteers help keep the town’s history alive
47
Muriel Wright, Chairman of Steyning Museum
“The loss of the Downs Link Railway saved Steyning in some respects,” reflects Andrew Woodfield, Curator of Exhibitions at Steyning Museum. “It would have become a commuter town otherwise and would probably have lost its medieval heart to development.”
beautiful small town of Steyning remains largely undiminished.
both in the name and stained-glass windows at St Andrew & St Cuthman Church.
HISTORIC ROOTS
Steyning was an important market town in Saxon times and Aetherlwulf, King of Wessex and father of Alfred the Great, was buried in the church in 858 A.D, before his remains were transferred to Winchester. A tombstone which may have been from his grave rests in the church porch.
He is stood by an exhibition dedicated to the railway line, which linked Steyning to Guildford and the coastal towns of Brighton and Shoreham. The line was a victim of the famous Beeching Cuts, and is now popular with walkers, riders and cyclists. And while the trains are gone, the historic heart of the
Steyning was established early in the 8th century – or so the story goes – after the arrival of Saint Cuthman. He travelled across the Downs from the west, pushing his sick mother in a wheelbarrow. When the supporting rope around his shoulder snapped, he took it as a sign from God and built a wooden church, near the site of the present church. Today, he is remembered

The legend of St. Cuthman
Stories such as these live on thanks to the dedicated and enthusiastic team of volunteers at Steyning Museum. However,
Items relating to historic local trades
it’s not just ancient legends that are brought back to life. There’s a focus on recent history too, with exhibits on the Downs Link Railway, local celebrities Elsie and Doris Waters, and the Second World War. Bringing the museum right up to date, children’s author and resident Julia Donaldson visited in June to meet children as an exhibit of her books was opened.
“Steyning was an important port and was used as a smuggling route too, so it has a colourful history.”
SKELETON MYSTERY Something that children find even more exciting than The Gruffalo is the Steyning Man. The 1,000-yearold skeleton (which has been carbon dated) was discovered at a local site undergoing development. The unknown man now lies in a specially-constructed glass sarcophagus, still in the earth from his grave. Another popular item is the Ashurst Vamping Horn, once used like a megaphone, while audio and visual tools bring to life several exhibits, with some relaying memories that have been recorded by locals.
48
Andrew Woodfield, Curator of Exhibitions at Steyning Museum
The team are always exploring new ideas too. As a former manager of
Brighton Toy Model Museum, Andrew displayed his own collection of toy theatres and puppets during lockdown. He has also donated a model train to make the railway exhibit more visually appealing to children. Andrew says, “Many of the exhibitions are permanent, although we add or alter items when we can. We have an awful lot in our storerooms as we have limited space, so we rotate certain areas with temporary exhibits. A current one is called ‘Victory’ and includes medals and paraphernalia from the Second World War. Some residents have recorded their war

memories and we matched up their accounts with photos from our extensive archives.” “Of the permanent exhibits, I most enjoy the one on pubs and breweries, as the stories are fascinating. Some public houses couldn’t sell spirits just beer, cider and stout – and some of the landlords and landladies from the Victorian period were fascinating characters. One landlady held an annual supper for regulars, cooking stew in the same copper pot she used to clean her underwear!”
49
“There’s currently a ‘20’s Plenty’ campaign to get the speed limit reduced to 20mph through the town and we're holding an exhibit on that too. Coming up, we have an ‘Allotments’ exhibit to coincide with the Food & Drink Festival and another celebrating the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. It’s important to change things regularly, otherwise the museum becomes static.”
EXTENSIVE ARCHIVES The museum first opened in 1983, initially in the basement of 91 – 93 High Street, before moving to Saxon Cottage in 1988. It moved to its current location in 1991, but it has since been extended, most recently with the addition of the Carman Room in 2020. The close-knit Steyning community ensures the museum continues to receive donations, with items of local or historic interest occasionally left in the will of residents. As well as collating local history, the team also answer enquiries from all over the world.

Elsie & Doris Waters
Elsie (1893 – 1990) and Doris (1904 – 1978) were prolific stars of stage, screen and radio. Born in Peckham, they came from a musical family and one of their brothers was Jack Warner, famed for Dixon of Dock Green. Elsie and Doris made their first professional appearance at Southwold Pavilion in Fred Beck’s Modern Follies, but would become best-known for the small-talking nonsense of Gert and Daisy (above), characters they created for a BBC broadcast. The sisters moved to Steyning in the 1930s and were often seen driving a Bentley in the village. Andrew Woodfield says, “If you were to hear their act today, it would sound out-of-date. But they were hugely popular and you must admire two women who organised a tour of the nation’s theatres by telegram and telephone, travelling by train.” 50
Jacquie and Lois respond to enquiries from across the world
Museum Vice-Chairman Jacquie Buttriss enjoys co-ordinating the archives with the assistance of Lois Roemer. They are expanding on the work of David Thompson, who spent many years sorting and arranging documents and photos. Now neatly arranged in colour-coded files in a research room funded by an Arts Council grant, these files are regularly used to answer enquiries.
KEVIN GRIFFIN CARS A family-run Horsham business with a great reputation and over 40 years experience...
Jacquie says, “We have acquired records and archives from local history groups in Bramber and Upper Beeding too, as we cover outlying parishes including Ashurst and Washington. This all helps us answer queries that come in. Recently, a Horsham schoolboy wanted to find out about an ancestor who was vicar at the church. He was researching his family tree and wanted to find out more. We managed to find portrait paintings and stories about the vicar’s life and this young boy found it all fascinating.”

“Sometimes enquiries are about individuals. Others may concern a historic building or business, or events held locally. Steyning was an important port hundreds of years ago and was also used as a major smuggling route, so it has a colourful history that makes the museum an interesting resource for people of all ages.” “We have a friendly and dedicated team and couldn’t run the museum without them. We’re also indebted to people like David, as well as Chris Tod, the former Curator, who helped turn this into the wonderful museum it is today.”
LOCKDOWN MEMORIES Despite the tales it tells, the museum remains a hidden gem. Tucked away off the historic Church Lane, it doesn’t easily attract visitors. However, being adjacent to Steyning Grammar School - and with many other schools, clubs and organisations visiting each year there’s a focus on entertaining and educating young people. Chairman Muriel Wright and Education Officer Jean Denwood are former teachers and understand the importance of hands-on activities. Archaeological items and the Steyning Man continue to fascinate younger visitors. However, items need not be centuries old to inspire. The new Julia Donaldson exhibit incorporates children’s interpretations of the author’s mostloved characters. The museum team has also compiled a book on Covid memories...

The Steyning Man is a popular exhibit with young visitors
Jean says, “I saw a news feature about people recording memories of lockdown and thought it would be great to document what has happened in Steyning, for future generations to look back on. The book includes poems, photos and memories – some happy, some not. We took photos of the rainbows in windows and made a ‘memory cloud’ where people could offer thoughts.” “Another significant project we are undertaking is to restore the headstone of the smuggler, William Cowerson. It has sunk into the ground of the church graveyard and the four-line poem at the bottom is no longer visible. It’s a great pity that this well-known aspect of our history is no longer readable.” “We’re awaiting permission from the church authorities, but having already received a small grant from The Steyning Society, we hope to raise further funds to remove and restore the stone. It’s important to our heritage, and that’s what we’re all about.”

SOUNDS SW Story of the historic organ at St Mary’s Parish Church
ELL
1865 was an important year at St Mary’s Parish Church. It is not only when the beautiful east window was installed, paid for by ladies of the parish, but also the year that the Henry Willis & Sons organ arrived.
cutting-edge at the time. It’s his signature sound, and if people from 1865 could visit St Mary’s today, they would immediately recognise it.”
‘Father’ Willis was the most famous organ builder in London. As well as winning a gold medal at the Great Exhibition of 1851, he made organs for some of the country’s most famous cathedrals, including St Paul’s and Salisbury. Each one had a distinctive sound that defined his work.
SWIRL EFFECT
Mike Overend, Assistant Organist at St Mary’s, said: “Father Willis was well-known for making ‘swell’ organs with fiery trumpet stop-knobs. The pistons between the manuals (or keyboards) and the pedals allowed the organist to easily alter between soft and loud sounds, which was
While the sound of a Father Harris organ may be distinctive, it is versatile too. As it’s effectively three organs in one, an organist can create endless combinations of sounds and effects. It has three manuals, with each of them linked to pipes. The top section of the menu is called the “swell”. There’s a swell pedal too, played with feet, which works like a Venetian blind, creating a swirl effect and allowing organists to hold notes for longer.

The middle manual is called the “great” manual and that feeds the large outer pipes. This provides the ‘body’ of the organ’s sound. The third and lower manual is the “choir” which provides the gentler tones. The smaller pieces in the intricate city of about 2,600 pipes (above) which are hidden mostly out of sight are for these choir notes. Director of Music Jeremy Weaver, who shares organ duties at St Mary’s with Mike, said: “All the manuals are interchangeable and you also have pedal divisions and
stop-knobs to add a huge array of orchestral sounds. You can introduce trombones, violins or trumpets to create an even bigger sound!”
PNEUMATIC ACTION The organ has been subject to significant maintenance at various times in its 155-year history. The first restoration was carried out by Norman & Beard in 1909, with further work done in 1955 and 1992, when
the rebuilding was carried out by J.W. Walker & Sons. The last major restoration was carried out in 2015, by Brighton-based Patrick Christian. Mike said: “The organ now has an electric pneumatic action, which has improved the sound, as there used to be a delay when you played it. Several great organ makers have added touches to the original over the years, so today it has a mixture of parts. But the original sound is still evident.”

“It’s a lovely organ to play, as it gives you the power to really colour a piece of music. Playing it is akin to sitting in an aircraft cockpit, as you’re there with hundreds of different controls in front of you and it’s a matter of pressing the right ones!”
A huge number of smaller pipes are hidden out of site
“You have to manage the organ so that it complements the choir, rather than overwhelms it.”
INCREDIBLE SOUND Being the church organist is a big commitment for just one person. So, Mike and Jeremy share the honour. As well as supplying the soundtrack to countless weddings and religious services over the years, schools and music groups also utilise the organ for concert performances, making it a valuable community asset. “The acoustics at St Mary’s are wonderful, so we can create a big sound,” says Jeremy. “We have a very good choir here too, and you have to be able to manage the organ so that it complements the choir, rather than overwhelms it. But we can
still build towards a powerful crescendo and lift the entire congregation. When the choir is in full flow, such as during the ‘Hallelujah’ chorus on a traditional Easter Sunday service, the combined sound can be incredible!”

WORTH THE MONEY Many historic church organs have been lost over the years. They are expensive to repair if not properly maintained. Worn leather in the bellows of the pipes can lead to leaks, or the wooden structures can expand because of the temperatures

inside historic buildings. Consequently, some churches have replaced pipe organs with electronic versions, which are cheaper to maintain and require less space. But that won’t be happening soon at St Mary’s. Mike said: “We are lucky that the church is committed to regular maintenance of the organ, even though it comes at a cost. We hope that will continue long into the future, as we’re lucky to have such a fascinating and historic instrument in Horsham.” WORDS: BEN MORRIS PHOTOS: TOBY PHILLIPS
Editor’s Note: AAH visited St Mary’s in March 2020. I hoped to publish the feature in April 2020, to help promote National Organ Day. When Covid put paid to that, I held the feature back a year, never thinking that the 2021 Organ Day would be cancelled too! I’m not waiting to see if 2022’s event goes ahead! Further information: St Mary’s hosts lunchtime music recitals on Wednesdays, which present an opportunity to hear the organ. For details, visit: www.stmaryshorsham.org.uk
