Italian Evolution A Preview of Piazza Italia XI By Garry Mortimer-Cook, Town Centre Manager at Horsham District Council

T

he Horsham Piazza Italia festival, organised by Horsham District Council, is a three-day celebration of all things Italian. Cars have long been at the heart of the event, with Minis and Ferraris arriving on Friday and a Bugatti Veyron expeced on Easter Monday. However, the Italia in Piazza market and an abundance of musical and theatrical entertainment ensures that Piazza Italia XI a must-see event for all the family. Over 110,000 people are expected to descend on the town centre on Good Friday, Easter Saturday and Easter Monday, to experience the biggest free event held over the Easter weekend in the South East.

What’s New? There are several changes to this year’s event. Whilst there will be no Italian motorcycle parade at Piazza Italia XI, the Mini parade moves forward to Good Friday. Easter Monday will see a Race Paddock for the first time, in partnership with major new event sponsors, Premier GT. There will also be a new fashion show

‘Old favourites that will always draw a crowd return, alongside new partners adding a different dimension’

featuring several of the town’s bestknown retailers, including La Vida, Jigsaw and M&S. Garry Mortimer-Cook, Town Centre Manager at Horsham District Council, said: “What we are seeing is a continual evolution of Piazza Italia, with old favourites that will always draw a crowd alongside new partners adding a different dimension.” “We’re delighted to welcome Sporting Bears motor club. Last year, they were a late addition to the programme and only a handful of members could attend. This year, more members will be bringing their cars along to offer Dream Rides to members of the public. “Whilst Sporting Bears can only be there on Good Friday and Easter Monday, the money they raise over those two days wil be split evenly between all three children’s charities supported by Piazza Italia XI.

Race Paddock Premier GT have been a breath of fresh air and are injecting renewed enthusiasm into the event. Garry said: “They have an obvious passion for cars and motorcycles and

through their connections in the world of racing and supercars, they’ll be establishing the first ever Race Paddock at Piazza Italia. “This will include an ex-Barry Sheene World Championship-winning Suzuki and a Benetton F1 car. They will be parked up outside the offices of Horsham District and West Sussex County Council at Parkside, where there will also be a Bugatti Veyron, so make sure that you head up that way. “Many town centre businesses continue to support the event, whilst others stage their own promotions over the weekend, which we encourage as the event is held

‘Toy Barnhaus in Swan Walk, will be giving away 400 Lamborghini toys’ with the intention of supporting local businesses. “There are some great offers to be found. Toy Barnhaus in Swan Walk, which is sponsoring our children’s events on The Forum, will be giving away 400 Lamborghini toys with a purchase in

store, so make sure you get there quickly as they’ll go like hot cakes!

Future Events As well as providing great entertainment over three days, Piazza Italia is becoming a signature event that helps to promote other celebrations taking place in the town over the year. If you want to read about more of Horsham’s 2017 highlights – including the English Festival, Plum Jam and the Horsham Festival – see the centre spread of this official Piazza Italia programme.

Italia in Piazza Italia in Piazza Food Market Carfax: Good Friday, Easter Saturday, Easter Monday

T

he Italia in Piazza market always attracts huge crowds by offering some of the finest Italian produce. This year’s market – held on all three days of Piazza Italia XI – will offer shoppers a special Easter treat. Colomba Pasquale, a traditional Easter cake, is an increasingly popular treat to be enjoyed after an Easter feast, usually accompanied (or preferably soaked) with a nice liqueur. Also new to the market is an Italian handbag stalloffering a range of styles imported from Tuscany. Look out for purses and other accessories too.

The food stalls of the market sells a wide range of hot food and fresh produce including olives, cheeses and cured meats, breads, herbs, spices and pasta. Market operator Simon Faro, who has been at every Piazza Italia since 2007, said: “We have many exciting new treats for visitors to the market in Horsham. “Among our pastries is a new Sicilian cannolo filled with pistachio cream, and we also have new exiting fillings in our calzone pizza. “Perhaps the most popular food of recent years will return; that’s our Italian sausage, freshly made with 100% pork the Italian way, with extra virgin olive oil. It is well worth queuing for. “We’ll also have roast porchetta ham with herbs. Originally from Rome, this ham has become famous and now it comes to Horsham.”

Cheese

‘Among our pastries is a new Sicilian cannolo filled with pistachio cream’

Select from a choice of Italian classics, such as the famous parmesan wheel and gorgonzola dolce to die for! Also, traditional local cheeses made from goats, sheep and cows milk. Many derive from the Alps and The Dolomites.

Cured Meats Meats range from the classic prosciutto crudo to the roast porchetta ham from Rome. The market also offers classic salame, pancetta and mortadella with pistachio. All of the cured meats are gluten-free.

Pasta Take home many types of tricolore pasta from Gargano, Puglia (an area renowned for producing high quality pasta). The unique feature of our pasta is the quality of the ingredients and the machinery used to make it. Look out for speciality pastas including black squid ink spaghettoni.

Olives We have olives hand-stuffed with a variety of fillings including garlic, anchovies and chilli specially sourced

from Calabria. We also have antipasto, marinated olives, grilled black olives and large green plain olives known as Verdolina. Our olives are 100% Italian and the ingredients we use are selected from all over Italy.

Biscotti e Dolci Seasonal biscuits, cakes and pastries of the finest quality include cannoli, crostatine and codine, which look like mini croissants filled with chocolate or lemon. If you are a fan of Nutella chocolate spread, look out for gianduia biscuits, containing real authentic hazelnut chocolate.

Extra Virgin Olive Oils & Balsamic Vinegars Enjoy fine extra virgin olive oils from Martina Franca in Puglia, all produced from the first cold press. Each has a distinctive flavour depending on the type and how they are produced. Simply try and experience the tastes of one of the finest selection of extra virgin olive oils Italy can offer. Various aromatic oils may also be available, including chilli and lemon oils, whilst the strawberry cream balsamic is very special. We also take orders, should you wish to buy 10 or 25-year-old balsamic vinegars or larger quantities of extra virgin olive oils.

Torrone Torrone is a famous nougat cake first made in 1441 in the village of Torrazzo, near Cremona, for a Royal wedding reception. Since then, it’s become famous across Italy and beyond. Soft nougat’s main ingredients are honey, egg-white and nuts and it comes in many flavours, including Amaretto and Stracciatella.

Try our succulent sausage sliced in half, griddled and cooked from the insideout and served in a bread roll. One of the finest sausages you’ll ever try! Arancini di Riso These risotto balls of rice are stuffed with various fillings including ham and cheese or spinach. A Sicilian speciality, these home-made treats normally sell out, so come early to avoid disappointment!

‘The Italian 100% pork sausage has been the most popular Italia in Piazza product for years’ Pizza Calzone Quite simply, a pizza folded in half with different fillings. Experience an authentic pizza base with fillings including meatballs or goats cheese and sun-dried tomato. Our calzone offers a true taste of Italy!

Speciality Breads We have a fantastic selection of speciality Italian breads on sale. These include a traditional ciabatta loaf and focaccia. Some are left to rise for 48 hours to give them distinctive characteristics. Italians like to keep this type of bread for days as it hardens and is better for dipping in oils. The breads are baked in England on each morning of the market, using continental ingredients.

Sporting Bears Dream Rides to Raise Funds for Children’s Charities Market Square (From Brock Taylor): Good Friday & Easter Monday, 10 - 4

S

porting Bears will be offering Dream Rides to visitors to Piazza Italia XI. This remarkable motor group sees owners of classic and sports cars volunteering their time to raise funds for children’s charities. The Koalas section of Sporting Bears, encompassing members in the South East, will be at Piazza Italia XI on Good Friday and Easter Monday.

Charity Donations Sporting Bears was formed in 1989 and now has about 700 members nationally. Since its formation, the club has raised about £1.8million for good causes. Sporting Bears will be hoping to edge ever closer to the magic £2million by offering 20-minute Dream Rides from Market Square, in return for a charitable donation. Huw Page, a member of the Koalas, said: “Our members bring their own cars to the event and offer passenger rides to the public in return for a donation. “We do have a recommended minimum

‘Our members bring their own cars along and offer passenger rides to the public’ amount as a suggestion and that fee is for the car and not per passenger. So, if there is space, we will accommodate two or three people. “This year at Piazza Italia, we hope to have an Aston Martin, a Ford Mustang, a Maserati and a Ferrari amongst several other cars. “Last year was our first visit to Horsham so we were getting a feel for the event. This year, we are hoping to attract more passengers and we will be bringing at least 10 cars along on both days. “As well as raising money for charity, members take great pleasure from such events. It enables people who might otherwise just keep a beautiful car locked up in a garage, to bring it out

and enjoy the car whilst making a real difference. “We’d like to attract new members to the Koalas, so if you own a sports car or a classic vehicle and would like to join us, please do come along.”

Charity Donations Sporting Bears was first invited to Piazza Italia X after Garry Mortimer-Cook of Horsham District Council met members at The Supercar Event at Dunsfold Park, organised by The Children's Trust. As The Children’s Trust is one of Piazza Italia XI’s three official charities, the Koalas agreed to be involved. Money raised this year will be divided evenly between The Children’s Trust, Chestnut Tree House and Winston’s Wish. Other major annual highlights for the Sporting Bears include CarFest, held in aid of Children in Need. For more information visit www.sportingbears.co.uk

Feast of Ferraris Ferrari Catwalk & Ferrari Rally Good Friday from 10am: The Carfax/East Street/Market Square/The Forum

T

he arrival of the Ferraris is, for many, the defining moment of the Piazza Italia festival. This year, 100 cars sporting the prancing horse are scheduled to take part in the Ferrari Rally on Good Friday. These may include a Daytona, Testarossa, Berlinetta Boxer, F40 and an extremely rare 599 GTO, which was able to lap the Fiorano test circuit one second faster than even the famed Ferrari Enzo.

The cars will not all be parked together, with some of the most valuable classic cars parked in The Forum (outside Dunelm/ TK Maxx). A hand-picked selection of cars will treat early arrivals by driving through the Carfax at 10 – 10:20 in the Ferrari Catwalk. John Wellard of the Sussex Ferrari Owners Club will talk about each of these 10 cars before they head out to Albion Way and park in The Forum, where they will stay until 3.15. John, who will be driving a Ferrari 458 Italia, said: “We have some very special cars in the catwalk. The most recent model will be the 488 Spider, which hasn’t long been on the market.

“We may also see a 365 GTC/4 which is based on the chassis of the Daytona, a California Turbo, F40 and a 360 Challenge Stradale. “We’re also hoping to be able to bring a Ferrari 599 GTO, which is a more aggressive version of the 599. It is an extremely fast car, with a top speed of 208mph. “Whatever cars we have in the Catwalk, I highly recommend that people make their way to The Forum on Good Friday to see those Ferraris.”

MAIN CONVOY The rest of the Ferraris will meet at South Lodge Hotel in Lower Beeding for a private get-together, before heading to Hop Oast where they will be organised in preparation for the convoy into town. About 25 cars will lead a convoy before driving straight through the Carfax to a VIP car park closed to the public. The rest of the Ferraris will follow immediately behind them and park in Carfax, East Street and Market Square. They will leaving at about 3.30.

John said: “Driving in to Horsham gives you a fantastic feeling! As a Ferrari driver, it’s nice to see so many other cars all together and of course it’s good to share a passion for Ferrari with the public. “That’s why so many members of the Owners Club sign up to participate in Piazza Italia.”

HEADING HOME At the end of the day, those 25 Ferraris in the VIP car park will head up Blackhorse Way and join up with the 10 classic Ferraris parked on The Forum. Those 35 Ferraris will then join the back of the convoy parked in the centre of town, and all the Ferraris (about 100 of them) will be waved away in a huge train. Canny car enthusiasts should go around the back of Piries Place at about 3:15 where they will see all of the Ferraris coming out of the Carfax together. It will be quite a spectacle!

Friday’s Fun Featuring Jo Appleby, Gordoni & Shakespearean Comedy Good Friday from 10:30am: The Carfax & Town Centre

T

here was a time when Piazza Italia was all about the cars. Whilst the Ferraris may still be the main draw for many, an increasing number of visitors enjoy the entertainment provided over the Easter weekend. On Good Friday, highlights include a unique Shakespearean opera, a Venetian singalong and the incredible vocals of soprano Jo Appleby.

Gordoni the Gondolier

Good Friday: 11.30 – 4 (Various times around town)

Gordoni The Gondolier left Venice in the 1990s, determined to spread the romance of Gondola travel far and wide. Not dissuaded by the lack of waterways, Gordoni punts throughout Horsham town centre, accompanied by romantic Italian music. Children can enjoy hitching a leisurely ride in the 8ft long flower-bedecked gondola and you may also like to join in with a traditional Venetian singalong.

Joanne Appleby

Good Friday: 1 – 3.30 (Bandstand, various times) Lancashire soprano Jo Appleby gained her degree from the Royal Northern College of Music where she was sponsored by the D’oyly Carte Opera Company. She began her professional career with the Carl Rosa Opera Company and has gone on to perform regularly with Glyndebourne Festival, Glyndeboune Touring Opera and the Royal Opera House Covent Garden. She is currently a member of the English National Opera Chorus. Jo was signed by Sony BMG as an original member of the opera band Amici

‘The comedy play revolves around an Italian living in Crawley and wanting to move to Horsham’ Forever. With Amici, she toured extensively, promoting the multi-platinum selling albums Defined and The Opera Band. Since her departure from Amici, Jo has returned to her operatic roots. She enjoys a busy concert schedule, performing regularly with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Sussex Symphony Orchestra. www.joappleby.com

The Two Gentlemen of Horsham

Good Friday: 10.30 – 4 (Various times around town) Come along and discover a lost Shakespearean play, being performed outdoors to celebrate Horsham’s Piazza Italia Venetian Day. The Two Gentlemen of Horsham is a comedy play revolving around an Italian merchant living in Crawley and wanting to move to Horsham. But who knows how the story will end?

Venetian Master Exhibition by Dennis Roxby Bott Horsham Museum & Art Gallery: Held throughout Piazza Italia

T

hroughout Piazza Italia XI, Horsham Museum and Art Gallery will host an exhibition of work by Dennis Roxby Bott. Entitled A Showcase, the exhibition includes seven stunning watercolours of one of the world’s great cities, Venice. The spell of Venice may challenge many an artistic talent. Thousands have attempted to convey the richness of its history in a painting, but so few have truly mastered it. Visitors to the new art exhibition can see one who has. Dennis Roxby Bott, a master recently appointed by Her Majesty the Queen to The Royal Watercolour Society, has spent over 50 years working with watercolours. The Rudgwick artist portrays the famous architecture and canals, but also the humble boat yard, portraying the true essence of the city. Just as the double decker bus can define ‘London’, the boat yard defines the heart of Venice. A remarkable feature of Dennis’ work is that it captures the minute details which can transform a painting.

Dennis, whose work has been collected by admirers across the world, usually exhibits in London on the South Bank. However, for two months, Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum and Art Gallery will be showcasing his stunning work. In addition to his Venetian paintings, Dennis has captured scenes closer to home, including views of Brighton, London and Oxford, where his love of architecture enables him to master buildings in landscapes. It is not only landscapes and architecture that appeals to Dennis; watercolours of classic cars and the boats at Shoreham have also inspired his brush.

One scene of Venice shows a magnificent building, but it is the outside lamp unlit, just the metal framework - that draws the eye and dominates the picture.

The exhibition Dennis Roxby Bott RWS: A Showcase is part of Horsham’s Piazza Italia Festival. The Museum is open on Good Friday and Easter Monday (11-4) as well as its usual hours of Monday to Saturday 10 - 5. www.horshammuseum.org

Horsham Market Horsham Local Produce Market Carfax: Saturday, 10 - 4

H

orsham’s popular Local Produce Market will run alongside the Italia in Piazza market on Saturday. The market, held in The Carfax every Saturday, has been operated by Food Rocks since September 2016. The market has a strong focus on local produce with stalls selling charcuterie, fish, chutneys, bread, cakes, sausages and even biltong. Chalk Hills Bakery is an artisan baker best known for its beautiful sourdough breads, freshly baked every day. Greener Greens, based in Leigh, sell fresh organic fruit and vegetables from local independent growers, whilst Horsham’s award-winning sausage makers Bangers Galore bring its latest sumptuous flavours to town. You can also pick up some fantastic treats from Just Brownies, a former grand finalist of the Sussex Food & Drink Awards.

Street Food There are several excellent street food vendors. Three of the market’s regular stalls (Pig & Jacket, Jah Jyot Punjabi and Garlic Wood Farm) were finalists in the Street Food category at the Sussex Food & Drink Awards, with Southwater-based firm Jah Jyot Punjabi scooping the honour.

‘Greener Greens sell fresh organic fruit & vegetables from local independent growers’

There are also several small drinks producers, offering ales, ciders and gin, whilst the Crafty Horse Bar offers speciality craft beer served from a horse box!

Fresh Impetus Simon Teesdale of market operators Food Rocks said: “People know that they can come to the market to buy good quality produce and that they will find a few surprises on the crafts side too. “We try to offer a combination of tried and trusted stalls with something unusual or unexpected. Since we’ve been here, we’ve been able to attract new stalls which has helped give the market a fresh impetus. There’s a really good atmosphere. “Horsham needs a strong market as it's supposedly a market town, so we’ll be bringing in more street entertainers and music to help grow the event in future.”

Food Rocks host markets in the Carfax, with local artisan produce, street food, crafts, live music and entertainment, every Thursday and Saturday. For information visit www.foodrockssouth.co.uk

Hepworth’s Beer Italian Beer Tent by Hepworth’s Carfax: Good Friday, Easter Saturday, Easter Monday

H

epworth’s has been a long-term supporter of Piazza Italia and will once again be selling draught beer from a marquee in the Carfax. The brewery will be offering an Italianstyle organic lager as well as several of its most popular bottled beers. Piazza Italia has always held a special place in the heart of owner Andy Hepworth, as he has a passion for fast Italian motorbikes and has attended on pervious years with his classic 1000cc Laverda RGS. Following major developments at Hepworth’s recently, Andy is delighted to be involved in Piazza Italia XI.

Hepworth’s Story Andy joined the King & Barnes brewery in Horsham in 1980, becoming one of the youngest head brewers in the country just four years later. When King & Barnes was bought (by Hall and Woodhouse) and the brewery was closed, Andy and several close colleagues launch his own brewery, Hepworth’s.

‘I do feel that we are part of the cultural shift towards craft beers’

As well as brewing its own beers, including Pullman bitter, Sussex and Prospect, Hepworth’s invested in a bottling facility so that it could brew and bottle beers for small and large-scale clients. It was to be a shrewd move. Today, two thirds of its business comes from contract brewing, with clients including household names such as Marks and Spencer. Hepworth’s own range of beers has expanded to include a stout (Conqueror)

and two lagers; Blonde, which is organic and made with Barley from the Goodwood estate, and Saxon lager. Andy said: “I do feel that we are part of the cultural shift towards craft beers over recent years. We are perhaps the second biggest craft lager brewery in the country now, so we certainly have played an important role.”

New Brewery Hepworth’s has now outgrown its premises behind Horsham Rail Station and built a state-of-the-art new brewery on Stane Street near Adversane. As well as improving brewing capacity, this new site has a visitors centre offering merchandise and even some local produce.

Find out more about the range of beers at Hepworth’s online at www.hepworthbrewery.co.uk

Driven to Success Feature on Premier GT, Washington

Sponsors of Supercar Heaven & Race Paddock on Easter Monday

T

he Easter Monday supercar parade is being organised by Premier GT Performance and Luxury Car Specialists in Washington. As well as organising the supercar parade, Premier GT will be bringing several cars from its own showroom to the event. Thanks to close motor racing contacts – on both two wheels and four – Premier GT will also be transforming Parkside into a Race Paddock, featuring a Benetton F1 car once driven by seven time World Champion Michael Schumacher. We met joint owners and self-confessed petrol heads David Trigg and Nick Hall at Premier GT’s new showroom at Rock Business Park, Washington. How did you two meet? David: I met Nick when he bought a Ferrari F430 from me. We became good friends through our mutual love of cars. After a few years of friendship, we had a chat about working together as equal partners and the rest is history. We have created a fantastic business with a great team, built on passion and enthusiasm. Why choose to be based in Washington? Nick: This showroom is perfect for us as it’s sleek, modern and allowed us to expand our range

‘There is often a desire for someone to drive a car that they once had a picture of on their bedroom wall’

of cars. We’re also more central to where we wanted to be, with easy access to the capital and Surrey, as well as coastal towns and cities. We have the A24 on our doorstep which is useful for test drives. It’s ideal. Are you all about supercars? David: We sell a wide range of performance and luxury cars, from classics to modern supercars. We’re always on the lookout for cars that offer something different to our clients. We consider specification, colour, history, mileage, condition and provenance. You are not associated primarily with any single manufacturer? David: We’re fortunate in that we have the freedom to choose which cars we sell. Currently, we have models by Porsche, Lamborghini, Maserati, Ferrari, Audi, TVR and Dodge. For clients seeking luxury, we sell cars by Bentley, Aston Martin, Jaguar, Mercedes and a selection of top specification Range Rovers, including the latest Vogue and Sport models. Presumably you attract a certain kind of buyer? Nick: Often it is an emotive purchase, made by somebody wanting to own a piece of supercar history or experience the thrill of a modern supercar. People looking for such a car can choose to visit

several different manufacturers or alternatively, they can come here and see a more diverse selection of cars that each holds a certain appeal. Why are classic supercars so desirable? David: There is often a desire for someone to drive a car that they once had a picture of on their bedroom wall. Also, they are a sound financial investment. By purchasing classic and modern classic cars, people can make an investment that may increase in value, whilst they also have something to drive and enjoy. Presumably they don’t all increase in value? Nick: Certain new supercars will of course depreciate initially. Rather than being bought as an investment, this type of car appeals to somebody who wants the thrill of a modern supercar experience. Instead of buying a car and only taking it out for special occasions, they want to experience the pinnacle of automotive technology. At least until another supercar catches their eye! David: We certainly have a few clients who change their car every six to 12 months as they want a different experience. That is what car enthusiasts are like. Our job at Premier GT is to help them fuel their passion. We aim to build a special relationship with our clients, based on trust and a mutual passion for beautiful cars. How do you decide which cars to bring to Premier GT? David: We buy with our heads and our hearts. We run the business as if we were customers – if we are excited about a car, we know others will be too. We look for and buy very individual cars and car enthusiasts gravitate here because we offer something different.

Do you have a favourite car? Nick: David and I often have this debate. However, when it comes to favourites, we agree that we don’t have one, as they’re all special in their individual ways. I thought that the Ferrari 458 was incredible and then a Lamborghini Huracán arrived and in terms of driving experience it was on another level. My expectations are continually being exceeded! Is it an advantage being based near Horsham? David: Location is key, and we're fortunate in that we’re also near Goodwood so we’ve taken clients on hospitality days to The Festival of Speed

‘We’re hoping to provide some great entertainment on Easter Monday’ and Goodwood Revival. This year, we’re also planning driving days, including trips to Le Mans for the 24 hours and Mondello Park near Dublin for track action. What inspired you to get involved in Piazza Italia? David: We met Garry Mortimer-Cook of Horsham District Council, who is very

passionate about the event, and we responded to that. We’re hoping to provide some great entertainment on Easter Monday, including a Race Paddock. We have asked a few friends with rally cars, ex-Moto GP bikes and even a Benetton F1 car to join us on the day. We’re keen to build relationships locally and our involvement in Piazza Italia XI is a key part of that.

Premier GT will be present on Supercar Monday at Piazza Italia. For more on Premier GT call 01903 254800, email sales@premiergt.com or visit the online showroom at www.premiergt.com

La Vida Boutique, Gerry Weber, Marks & Spencer, Jigsaw and JoJo Maman Bebe will be participating in the show, compered by children’s TV favourite Dave Benson Phillip (Playdays, Get Your Own Back). With a Bugatti Veyron and a F1 Race Paddock also staged there, visitors on Easter Monday should ensure they head up to enjoy the many attractions at Parkside, outside the offices of Horsham District Council. Sally Pavey, organiser of the fashion show, said: “The theme of the shows will be Summer, with models demonstrating smart wear, casual wear, beach wear, sportswear and family wear. “We have experienced models of all ages demonstrating the latest styles for men and women. There will also be six children modelling for JoJo Maman Bebe, so naturally there will be a family-friendly atmosphere at the fashion show. “Dave Benson Phillips is going to be dressed from head-to-toe in Marks & Spencer's new men’s range, which will be interesting as he’s renowned for wearing brightly-patterned shirts! “We have a wonderful celebrity stylist and make-up artist, Dan-Paul Flores, who is kindly volunteering his time to ensure that all of our models look fabulous on the catwalk. “Whilst the fashion show is a collaboration of local people and businesses, it’s not going to be a low-key event. We’re going to make it as professional as we possibly can and for

Swan Walk outlet Gerry Weber brings modern, high quality and irresistibly feminine styling to the show. New to the Carfax is JoJo Maman Bebe, a retailer for the young and mums to be. This is when the little ones take to the catwalk, showing off new lines not yet seen on the high street. La Vida Boutique, Swan Walk, is an independent retailer holding its own among the international brands. Kwik safety checks for motorists Kwik Fit is proud to sponsor the Safety Awareness Zone at this year’s Horsham Piazza Italia. The UK’s leading tyre retailer is supporting the event to help highlight the importance of car safety. Kwik Fit representatives will be available over the three day event to advise motorists on how to keep their vehicle safe on the road. As a car’s tyres are the only components in contact with the road, they are its most important safety feature, and so it’s vital that drivers know how to check the tread depth and tyre pressure of their vehicle. The legal limit for minimum depth of the tread on your tyres is 1.6 millimetres, but their performance will start to deteriorate well before they become illegal. Kwik Fit recommends motorists get into the habit of checking all four tyres every two weeks for pressures and general condition – don’t forget to check the spare tyre too.

It’s important to keep an eye on the so-called little things on your car too, which ultimately aren’t so little after all. The upkeep and safety of bulbs, wiper blades and batteries can often be overlooked, yet they are just as vital as any other component. For ultimate peace of mind, Kwik Fit’s highly trained technicians offer a variety of free car checks for all customers to help them keep safe on the road. To find your local Kwik Fit centre, or to find out more information, please visit www.kwik-fit.com

Sussex Saviours SERV Sussex Blood Service Charity to Lead Piazza Italia XI Parades

T

he various Piazza Italia XI car parades will be led into Horsham town centre by motorcyclists from SERV Sussex. SERV Sussex is a UK registered charity that provides night-time transportation of blood, blood products and other urgent medical items for NHS hospitals across Sussex. In 2016, SERV Sussex responded to 1,147 individual requests for assistance from NHS Trusts or the UK Association for Milk Banking. The service is provided free of charge to the NHS between 7pm and 6am, 365 days of the year, via a committed team of volunteer riders and drivers, often using their own vehicles. It may come as a surprise that the NHS has no formal and FREE way of moving urgent blood, samples and patient notes overnight. Without SERV, local hospitals would have to use ambulances or pay taxis to transport these urgently needed items. By providing a free transport service, SERV enables hospitals to focus their

resources on patient care and eliminate costly transport bills. The NHS Blood and Transplant teams collect blood from donors in England and North Wales and, after processing and testing, supplies the components (red cells, platelets and frozen products) to hospitals in these areas. They supply blood components on a not-for-profit basis by setting prices that recovers their costs only.

PIAZZA ROLE SERV Sussex riders led the Piazza Italia XI Tour through the district’s villages on Sunday 2 April and will be leading the processions into town once again for the main event. The charity is also keen to welcome committed volunteers to be riders, drivers, controllers, administrators and fundraisers. Piazza on Tour Piazza Italia Tour on Sunday 2 April Horsham, Billingshurst, Pulborough, Storrington, Steyning and Henfield

O

ne of the most successful developments of Piazza Italia has been the district-wide Tour. The Piazza Italia XI Tour saw over 30 vehicles take to the road on Sunday 2 April, in celebration of Easter’s main event in Horsham town. Helped by glorious weather, the Tour was greeted by huge numbers of people as it visited the market towns of Billingshurst, Pulborough, Storrington, Steyning and Henfield. Cars including a Ferrari F40, the beautiful Alfa Romeo 8C and a rare Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera shared the limelight with classic cars including an Abarth Fiat 500, Mini Cooper and a Morgan three-wheeler. In Pulborough, a McLaren and a striking Ford GT40 joined the convoy. The Tesla Model X attracted as much attention as any other, highlighting an increasing interest in electric cars across the Horsham District. The Tour highlighted the unique atmosphere of the district’s market towns, with many businesses taking advantage of increased footfall.

Setting Off Cars gathered in the Carfax for a 10:30 start with the drivers’ breakfast and tour briefing taking place at sponsors Carmela Deli. SL2 Signs were on hand to help apply special Tour

‘This is a way of building the community, giving people memories and something to talk about’

stickers, whilst charity SERV Sussex were out in force as the volunteer escort for the Tour. SERV Sussex provides the crucial service of delivering life-saving blood to those in need. Event Traffic Management specialists and Piazza Italia partners, ETMS Highways, effectively managed the town’s road closure.

Billingshurst Stop In Billingshurst, the cars used the library car park, joining a display of classic cars assembled by Paul Curry of local brewery Hepworth’s. An Italian vocalist added to the entertainment, whilst Simon Faro of the Italia in Piazza market donated a hamper as a raffle prize to raise funds for local good causes. Patrick Perks of the Billingshurst Community Partnership, thanked marshalls and volunteers who helped organise and tidy up after the event. Patrick said: “By my reckoning, we had around 400 people here for the morning and it was well-received as a great family day out.”

Fabulous Setting After 45 minutes, the Tour moved on to Pulborough where the Lower Street car park provided a fabulous setting, as the early morning sun flooded over the

simple ways to promote your business and we can help you with them all: nearby RSPB Pulborough Brooks nature reserve. The sunshine no doubt helped attract a big crowd, as about 800 people turned out, leading to great business for The General Store and The Oddfellows Arms, which was serving Italian coffee, beer and wine and real pizzas from a wood oven. David Hurst of the Pulborough Community Partnership said: “The Tour was brilliant. More cars, more people and more sunshine! So far as I was concerned, everything went like clockwork. “The feedback has been excellent. Everyone was smiling and relaxed and the whole event exuded a warm feeling. “This is a way of building the community, giving people memories and something to talk about. This year was better than last year’s Tour, so what can we do next year?”

Flags Flying Next up was Storrington which, like last year, had ‘put the flags out’ with ‘il Tricolore’ filling the high street. With a major car display by SADCASE and the Italia in Piazza market also in the library car park, it was a big draw for the community. A selection of Storrington businesses came together to provide tour lunch bags. Clarke and Charlesworth, Design at 32, Fowlers Estate Agents, Greyhound Brewery, Joanna’s Boutique, The Moon Pub and Waitrose all contributed to an enjoyable feast.

Spectacular Steyning At Steyning, the closure of the High Street created a spectacular display, with the cars lining up in front of the fascinating range of independent shops and cafes that give the village its unique character.
