Notes from the Editor

The Day the Council Defied a Prime Minister

W

hen Boris Johnson announced his “new deal” in August, you could understand his logic, even if you might not agree with the concept. Building and upgrading houses, schools, hospitals and improving infrastructure may well provide a path to economic recovery. It’s not a new idea, after all. We have – quite literally – dug ourselves out of a financial hole before. And it has worked. The problem is, where will all these houses be built? And would you be willing to accept more new homes in the Horsham District? After Boris’s announcement, Horsham District Council was informed that it would need to almost double the number of homes it provides, from the current minimum target of 920 homes a year to 1,715 homes a year. It’s an unnerving rise. HDC subsequently issued a statement on its website and to the local press. “Council Says NO.” It even spelt out the bold letters... It was an unusual statement. It reads: ‘The Council has consistently challenged the Government over housing numbers and its aggressive timetables.’ ‘The Council will be taking legal advice before responding formally to the consultation but it does not believe that the house building industry can deliver 1,715 homes per year. It is difficult enough already to find land that has few constraints for development and to absorb 1,715 homes every year would make that task virtually impossible.’

As part of its consultation, the Council has posed a questionnaire for residents: Do you agree or disagree with the Council’s view on the proposed house build numbers of 1,715 homes a year? Which is a bit like asking children if they like sweets. Whilst it may have challenged the housing numbers in the past, the tone of the statement feels different. There was a more than a hint of defiance. It’s as if the Council has grown tired of the development proposals landing on its doorstep, its limited power to prevent them happening, and perhaps most importantly, the blame that gets attributed to it by us residents every time we’re stuck in traffic. The statement was perhaps more of a plea to the locals. “This really isn’t our fault!” Over recent years, new estates have crept up here and there, and now we’re at risk of a “bottleneck” situation; a backlog caused by delays in constructing the North of Horsham development. You’ll have seen the hedgerows disappear and metal fencing being erected along the A264, as permission was granted a long time ago for the estate, to include 2,750 homes, business units and community facilities. At about the time you read this, children should have been walking into a brand new Bohunt School for the first time. The project has been given the hurry-up and is now scheduled to open in December 2021. By then, those pupils who started in Year 7 in 2019 will have been in temporary accommodation for half of their secondary school experience.

5

Until that North Horsham site is at least underway, it’s difficult to gauge the housing and infrastructure needs of the District beyond it. And if the Council is unable to do anything about the Government’s new numbers, could we see a situation where over the course of the next decade, the Council’s ability to pick-and-chose lesser impacting development sites is negligible? Is it inevitable that we will eventually see houses being built on any and every greenfield site (Adversane and West Grinstead, to name but two) that has ever been threatened with development? The possibility of new estates in rural locations or even on the doorstep of popular nature reserves (Warnham) seems somewhat gloomy. But Horsham has faced bigger threats before. Several hundred years ago, the nobleman and politician Thomas Seymour acquired large parts of St Leonard’s Forest and suggested that a new town should be built within it. Any campaigners might therefore have been relieved when he was executed for treason. And when Elizabeth I came to the throne, she allowed the forest to be plundered for timber. Ignoring a management plan, she granted warrants to anyone and everyone who wanted to chop beech, birch and oak trees from the huge forest, which then covered vast tracts of land. Within a couple of decades, it was virtually stripped bare, altering the local landscape forever. Nothing quite so dramatic is happening today, yet we may still be embarking on - or in the midst of - a period which significantly alters the character of Horsham and the wider District. Brace yourselves...

NEWS ROUND-UP

Work has finally begun on Bohunt School on land north of Horsham. It was originally scheduled to open this September, but delays (not all of which can be blamed on Covid-19) mean it’s now set to open in December 2021. A statement by developers Legal & General (which has taken the lead of the 2,750 house estate from Liberty Property Trust) reads: ‘We are currently progressing plans for the main access works and utilities, including a sub-station, foul pumping station and other critical infrastructure.”

7

Meanwhile, the fight against yet more new homes on land at Rookwood continues. Nearly 8,000 people have signed a petition against development of about 1,000 houses on land used by Rookwood Golf Club. It would also impact nearby Warnham Nature Reserve. A BioBlitz study was organised in August by the Friends of Horsham Park and Keep Rookwood Green Alliance to assess the ecological impact of the proposed development. The land, owned by HDC, is one of several being considered in the Local Plan.

Residents in Billingshurst fear that any relaxation of planning laws by the Government could pave the way for a new ‘mini-town’ at Adversane. Developers Our Place is proposing to build 3,500 homes as well as schools, health centre and business units on a greenfield site. With the village already impacted by new housing in recent years, campaign group BigSTAND has formed to “stand up against mass housing that threaten to destroy our communities.” http://bigstand.co.uk

Horsham District Council have refused planning permission for 473 new homes at Newhouse Farm off Old Crawley Road, Horsham. The application by developers Fairfax was turned down as it would “result in an unacceptably urbanising influence” within a countryside location. The news was well received by local campaigners. The Keep Our Green Spaces (KOGS) group spread word of the development plan and encouraged residents to object.

Horsham District Council has issued a rejection to the Government’s demands for more housing over the next ten years. The Government is consulting on planning reforms to drive an economic recovery which could see HDC almost doubling the number of new homes it must cater for, from 920 homes a year to 1,715. A statement from HDC reads: ‘Under existing requirements from Government, the Council is a good way through preparation of a new plan and this is needed by November. Our aim in that has been to try to minimise the impact on the District of new house numbers, maximise the infrastructure benefits and improve biodiversity. The numbers in that plan would be considerably lower, based on the existing Government minimum target of 920, plus the requirement to contribute to meeting wider needs. That certainly isn’t a painless process since the homes will have to go somewhere, but it at least bears some relationship to the local demand. For the moment it is our intention to continue with that process pending legal advice on the status of such a plan if new legislation is introduced.’ Residents can submit views at: horsham.gov.uk/planningwhitepaper

Red Kite ©Dave Kilbey/Sussex Wildlife Trust

The Red Kite is an increasingly familiar sight in the skies, soaring over the South Downs on an almost-six-foot wingspan. Whilst still outnumbered by buzzards, they share a similar story, having both bounced back from the brink of extinction. Just 50 years ago there were only a handful of Red Kites left, clinging on to their last remaining stronghold, deep in the wilds of Wales. Reintroductions were first made in 1989 when six Swedish birds were released in Scotland and a further four (plus one Welsh) in Buckinghamshire. By 1992, they were breeding and two years later, the first wild-reared Kites reared young of their own. Further reintroductions went just as well and in 2006, a Red Kite was spotted over London for the first time in 150 years. It’s an incredible success story and though some hazards remain, there’s every indication the Red Kite will thrive into the future. sussexwildlifetrust.org.uk

Horsham Museum & Art Gallery is undertaking one of the most dramatic changes in its 126-year-old history as it refreshes displays, introduces digital elements and updates its website. The temporary closure of the Museum due to Covid-19 has provided an opportunity for the Council to look at ways of improving what it can offer to visitors, including the use of digital technology. A new website will allow visitors to discover stories and objects from

Horsham’s past, with new features added in the coming months. A Tourist Information section on the Discover Horsham District website will support businesses and attractions. HDC says it is “committed to safeguarding and protecting the District’s heritage, culture and memories and the Museum provides the perfect backdrop to tell Horsham’s story.” horshammuseum.org

Boat trips are back underway at the Wey and Arun Canal in Loxwood. The electric boat Wiggonholt has been adapted to take a maximum of 14 passengers to allow for social distancing procedures. Clock Repairs

By Stephen Jackman

Everything has stopped over the last few months but your clock does not have to….. All bad things pass. These things are a matter of time and if your clock has stopped these last few months, I can help. Many people miss their clocks when they are not running. Having a Longcase clock running is known to relieve stress, as the beat of the pendulum is exactly that of a heartbeat and has a calming effect. I am Steve Jackman, your local horologist and a Fellow of The British Horological Institute. I have worked with clocks for more than 20 years, repairing, servicing and making clocks. I am offering a safe “click and collect” service where you can drop your clock off outside my workshop or I have a safe practice for collecting Longcase (Grandfather) clocks. I specialise in Longcase and English clocks but am happy to quote for servicing or repairing most clocks. Please ring me for more details on 01798 831286.

Age UK West Sussex, Brighton & Hove and Age UK Horsham District have merged, allowing the charity to help even more people. Originally two independent charities, the merger allows them to share expertise and resources, ensuring services are sustainable and able to support the increased demand generated by Covid-19. During the current crisis, there’s been a focus on doorstep deliveries of groceries and medication, and befriending phone calls. The Horsham District name will remain in the area, although the charity will be formally known as Age UK West Sussex, Brighton & Hove.

HELPING HAND

DEMAND IS GROWING AT HORSHAM FOOD BANKS

D

espite its relative affluence, the Horsham District now hosts five food banks, feeding hundreds every week. Run by local charity Horsham Matters, demand for the scheme has reached new heights because of the pandemic. AAH met Managing Director Emma Elnaugh and Community Support Lead Kathryn McCarthy.

How are the food banks run? Emma: Horsham Matters operates the food banks in the local area, in association with The Trussell Trust, which has a network of 1,200 food banks across the country. We adhere to its guidelines and conditions and The Trust helps us to access funding streams. However, as far as collecting and delivering food is concerned, all five food banks in the District are run by Horsham Matters as a charity. Where are the food banks? Kathryn: Prior to the pandemic, we operated food banks throughout the week. We had just started a new venue at the United Reformed Church on Monday (2.30 4.30pm) along with St Andrew’s Church in Roffey on Tuesdays (10am - 12pm) Christian Life Centre in Horsham on Wednesdays

Estate. During the pandemic, we’ve been successfully delivering food to them within 48 hours and volunteers are gradually returning, when they feel ready. How many deliveries do you make? Emma: Because of the summer food parcels, we’re currently feeding about 500 people a week. During the holidays, we help about 70 families, referred mostly from local primary and secondary schools. Although the government did continue free school meals over the summer, many need extra help, if they’re on a low income or receive benefits. Without those additional families, we typically help between five and 10 people every day.

Has that changed during lockdown? Emma: On 17 March, we closed the food banks and all volunteers were stood down. We had to think quickly about managing demand for food, so our small team of paid staff were re-deployed to cover the food bank. We contacted all our referral agencies who issue food vouchers, and those in need were instead asked to call or email our headquarters in Blatchford Road Industrial

17

Has demand increased because of Covid-19? Kathryn: We've started to see the impact as the furlough scheme comes to an end. Certainly, we’ve seen a huge increase in demand and that is down to people losing their jobs and using the food bank for the first time. We expect that trajectory to get worse as more people come off furlough and are made redundant. In the last financial year, Horsham food banks helped 2,900

people, which was an increase of 55% on 2018/19. At the beginning of August, not even half way into the financial year, our food banks had fed over 2,100 people. So, after six years, demand is still rising. Is it hard for people to ask for help? Kathryn: It can be a matter of pride, certainly. Only yesterday, somebody asked to collect their food, as they didn’t want their neighbours to know. That’s even though we donate anonymously in an unmarked van. We’ve spoken to people in tears, but we’re always empathetic and reassure them. There is nothing to be embarrassed about. Statistically, most people are only three pay packets away from being placed in an at-risk position. Often, the need is just temporarily, until universal credit can be received or they find new employment. The idea is that its short-term help for a short-term crisis. How can people use the food banks? Emma: We work alongside different agencies – more than a hundred - throughout the

These include Citizen’s Advice, healthcare professionals, schools and children’s centres. Vouchers are issued to those in need and can be redeemed at local food banks. Volunteers and staff can also provide a listening ear, talking over tea and biscuits and even signposting people to agencies that may offer further help and expertise. What food items do they receive? Emma: There’s a picking list, depending on the size of the household. We provide mainly non-perishable goods such as cereals, tea, coffee, biscuits, UHT milk, tinned meat, fish and vegetables, pasta, rice, potatoes

and cupboard essentials like jam. We top-up with fresh food including bread, eggs and fruit, if we have them available. At the start of lockdown, we were fortunate in that local restaurants and shops donated food they couldn’t use, before it went out of date. For a two-person household, we’ll deliver three large bags of food which will last several days. Where does all the food come from? Kathryn: We have donation points at supermarkets. Shoppers fill those donation points at Tesco (Broadbridge Heath and Pulborough) Waitrose (Horsham and Storrington) and outlets including local Budgen’s and Co-op stores and it all comes here to be sorted. Several businesses are great supporters of ours, including Sussex Produce Company, which donates fresh fruit and vegetables, and Kinswood Eggs. Tesco and Marks & Spencer donate surplus produce and Garlic Wood Farm has been tremendous during lockdown. Do people tend to donate the same food items? Kathryn: We see a lot of baked beans, pasta and cereals! For the first time, we’ve had to ask other food banks to help us, as our supply of essential items like tinned meat and vegetables ran short. That says a lot about where we are as a food bank, as we are normally able to help everyone else, because we have a very generous community in Horsham. People continue to be generous; it’s just that need is outweighing donations for the first time.

Horsham Matters also helps people in other ways? Kathryn: People can also donate household items and furniture to us. Some of that goes to our fundraising shop in Redkiln Close, while other items are donated to people in need. For example, when someone who may have been homeless moves into a flat, they may not be able to afford furniture. We can provide key items of furniture, as well as electrical goods including fridges and washing machines. It can occasionally feel like we’re being used as an alternative to the tip though. Most people are very generous and donate good items. But some say, “It will do somebody who is homeless!” That shouldn't matter, so we ask for items to be in good, sellable condition.

Melanie White and Merryweather at the Horsham shop and salon (©AAH/Toby Phillips)

MERRY BIRTH M

erryweather’s in Horsham recently celebrated its first anniversary.

Owner Melanie White named the dog grooming salon after her pet spaniel, who often greets customers at the shop within Hiller Garden Centre. Melanie previously ran a recruitment company in London, but after selling the business embarked a new challenge when she couldn’t find an ideal grooming experience for Merryweather. “I wanted a boutique feel rather than a franchised outlet, and a place where I could see the grooming being done,” said Melanie.

“Most salons take dogs into another room out of sight and with home-based groomers, customers leave their pet at the front door. The idea here is that anyone walking past can look inside and see dogs being groomed. We don’t actively encourage people to do that as the dogs can get excited, but the openness demystifies grooming and gives customers peace of mind.” “We see lots of children at the window or standing in the doorway, interested in what’s happening. It’s reassuring for pet owners who love their dogs to know they’re being well looked after.”

Melanie chose Hillier Garden Centre as it’s a family-orientated location with lots of free parking. It’s also a dog-friendly centre, with Merryweather’s inspiring a 400% interest in canine footfall over last year. This has helped the business build a loyal customer base, with most appointments now needing to be booked at least a month in advance, thanks partly to the salon’s popular discount scheme.

ECO FRIENDLY As well as grooming, there is a boutique shop offering hand-picked items including environmentally-friendly collars and leads. Melanie said: “I run the shop side and hired three experienced groomers, including a manager with a Level 3 Diploma in dog grooming - the highest level attainable.” “I source unusual items for the shop; things you wouldn’t necessarily find in big stores. We sell hand-made products by BlossomCo and snacks made with 100% yak’s milk. We also support Project Blu, which makes collars and leads entirely from recycled materials, either from the oceans or on its way there. They have a lovely feel thanks to its high-quality, breathable material.” “Everything we sell has been tried by Merry herself. We have bells that are used for toilet training and we use them in the shop. She rings the bell to let us know when she needs to go outside!” In addition to the shop, Melanie has created a second online business, Merry and Monty, selling dog snacks and toys. She also hopes to open a second grooming salon in Sussex later this year, with a third to follow in 2021.

FEELING BLU FAMILY PRIDE AS CATFISH NAMED BLUES BAND OF THE YEAR

C

atfish have established a reputation on the Blues circuit as a brilliant live act. Recently, they triumphed at the UK Blues Awards, where they were named Band or the Year, with singer/ guitarist Matt Long Instrumentalist of the Year. AAH met Matt at his Wisborough Green home and discovered it’s all about the music…

When did Catfish form? Our first ever gig was in August 2014 at a pub in Billingshurst. So, we’ve just passed our sixth anniversary. What was the original line-up? We had Terry Harvey on bass (AKA Dusty Bones) with Kevin Yates on drums. Kevin left recently to spend more time with his family. The mainstays of the band have been me and my dad, Paul Long, on keyboards. How did you come to start a band with your dad? I’d been in a couple of bands before Catfish but they ended for one reason or

26

another. We decided to start a covers band, just until something else came along. And here we are, six years later! Paul has been in others bands too? His previous groups include The Riotous Brothers, a blues and R&B band. They were very cool and played for the love of music, like Catfish. They sometimes played gigs to one person, as we have! You never go into blues music thinking about commercial success; you do it because you’re passionate about it. How come you chose guitar and not the keyboard, like your dad? I started playing piano but wasn't

enjoying it. The guitar appealed to me because you could do all sorts of things to alter the sound. I asked dad if I could have guitar lessons instead and he said, “absolutely!” I'm very grateful for that. Music was never forced on me, which is important. I’ve seen many young musicians and you can always tell when there’s a pushy parent in the background. You can see their heart’s not truly in it. I’ve also seen genuine passion in musicians who are half my age with twice the talent. Young people need to be allowed to evolve naturally and follow their own path.

UE

Matt Long, lead singer of Catfish and The Revenant Ones (©Toby Phillips Photography/AAH)

Was music all you wanted to do? Yes. When I left school, I could have studied A’ levels, but it felt like a waste of another two years, as I knew what I wanted to do. I went to ACM (Academy of Contemporary Music) which was a fantastic experience. I’d still be there if I could be!

What were the early days like in Catfish? Initially, we played blues standards, playing small venues, making a bit of money and having fun. We recorded a covers album and internet radio stations picked it up and liked our music. Gradually, we started to write our own material and our third album, Burning Bridges, was original songs. What are you currently working on? We were working on an acoustic album. We’ve been writing it at home during lockdown, but sadly dad has had some health

problems and it’s on the backburner. We released a single too, a re-recorded version of Archangel, originally on Burning Bridges, but with our new bassist Adam Pyke, drummer Kevin Hickman and backing vocals by the brilliant Alice Armstrong. Archangel is one of the songs that people always want to talk to us about. Another favourite is Make It Rain… I first heard this song being played by Ed Sheeran of all people, on Sons of Anarchy on Netflix. I remember thinking it was a nice song, although a bit overproduced, which Ed Sheeran doesn’t really need to do as he’s a good singer. When I heard the original by

Foy Vance, I was blown away and wanted to record a version with Catfish. It’s fifteen minutes long, but a firm favourite. We didn’t play it at one gig and almost got lynched! What is touring like? I would happily play to one person or thousands - if one person goes away happy, I feel I’ve done a good job. We were touring in the Czech Republic in 2019 and some nights it would just be us and a small crowd, while sometimes we’d be part of a big festival line-up with well-known acts. At one of these gigs, everything came together and we were told that Catfish broke the record for merchandise sold!

You’re a powerful performer… It becomes easier with experience. I'm never nervous before going onstage anymore. I'm more nervous in the studio as everything needs to be perfect. I enjoy playing to the audience, feeding off their energy. Sometimes, you’ll have a quiet gig where everyone sits down and listens, so you can play slower songs. Other nights, everybody is jumping about and you can’t break that up with a ballad. How strong is the Blues scene? It’s more of an underground thing. Some people say, “Blues doesn't exist anymore!” But it exists in every genre, as pop and rock all stems from the blues to some extent. Whenever I’m listening to music, I can always point out parts inspired by the blues. What I love about it as that it attracts people who just love to play. I’ve jammed on stage with brilliant musicians without even knowing their names! You were named Blues Band of the Year. What does that mean to you? It’s nice that people recognise the hard work we put in. We spent a long time working on the album and gigged as often as possible before lockdown. I’d never say we are the best blues band in the UK, as I don't think that's true. Maybe I’m naturally self-deprecating.

You’ve recently formed a second band? Some of the songs I was writing were getting heavier and moving towards rock. Some of it suited the Catfish vibe, but some weren’t right for a blues audience. I love blues and rock equally, but there’s a different dynamic. So, I formed The Revenant Ones with Kev and Adam, who make for a brilliant rhythm section - the most important part of any band. We’re heavily influenced by Alter Bridge, fronted by Myles Kennedy. It’s heavy rock, bordering on metal at times. Do you crave commercial success? It's foolish to go into music thinking you’ll be rich or famous, because you're setting yourself up to fail. if you're doing it because you enjoy it, you're always going to be winning. Okay, maybe I would like to make a bit more money! But for me, is liberating and if you're passionate, people will appreciate what you’re doing.

A PERFECT FIT

UP & RUNNING IN HORSHAM IDENTIFIED A JOGGING BOOM

T

here has been a surge in recreational runners during lockdown, with people taking advantage of the natural beauty of the Sussex countryside. But the boom goes back further, with Horsham Joggers and the Parkrun attracting huge numbers even before the pandemic.

Mike De Frateschi identified the growing trend early, establishing Up and Running in East Street back in 2002. Thanks to its remarkable customer service, the specialist shoe shop continues to prosper. Here, Mike describes his business journey in his own words…

Fresh Challenge Up & Running was born out of my own personal passion, love and interest in running. Previously, I worked with a video production company, but when the work dried up, I found myself out of work in my late 40s with some stark choices to make. My wife and I had discussed the possibility of opening a running shop, so we took the chance in 2002.

30-Minute Service

Customers are invited to test shoes on the treadmill (©AAH/Toby Phillips)

As a long-standing member of Horsham Joggers, we’d seen an increasing demand for a dedicated running shop. At the time, you had to travel to specialist shops in London for a gait analysis service. We wanted to offer customers with not only the best running shoes and apparel, but expert technical and scientific advice including free fitting and gait analysis.

31

Our ethos is to provide the best customer service. We typically spend 30 minutes with each customer, which is crucial to determining the correct shoes. As we’re trained in bio-mechanics and have backgrounds in running, we can talk through typical running injury issues, even referring on to medically trained professionals and training programmes where appropriate. We've also used many of the products ourselves and use that knowledge to advice customers. It you purchase the wrong pair of running shoes, you can cause yourself injury. So, we start with a gait analysis to understand your body mechanics and muscle movement, to identify the right type of shoe initially. We stock leading brands including Mizuno, Asics, Saucony, inov-8, Brooks and Hoka One One, and customers can try several to determine comfort aspects. We can then go on to the treadmill and monitoring as you’re running, to determine if the shoes are right.

“The impact of running can be several times your own body weight, so you need to have the right shock absorbers on your feet.”

Active Interest People new to jogging or running will often go to a high street sports shop for their first pair of trainers. Eventually, they tend to come to us, as they realise quickly that such trainers are designed for casual wear and are not fully functional trainers for road running. The impact can be several times your own body weight, so you need to have the right shock absorbers on your feet if you enjoy running regularly. The difference pricewise can be significant, but there is good reason for that.

Visiting a specialist running shop for the first time used to be quite an intimidating experience, but we put everyone at ease and explain what we are aiming to achieve. This is much more than just a job for us. We take an active interest in our customers’ wellbeing and progress and take great satisfaction in seeing people start running for the first time.

Running Boom We have seen trends change significantly over the shop’s 18 years. Running has become increasingly popular, driven in part by the popularity of the likes of Parkrun. The Horsham Parkrun was originally set up by the Joggers, with about 100 people taking part. Now, there are five times that number. It’s a simple premise, but the beauty of it is that it brings the community together. You see very good club runners alongside recreational running, people jogging with dogs and even families. That's what is lovely about it. That community aspect of running wasn’t there before.

Southern Company of the Year 2018 Winners The Master Window & Conservatory Installers Association

We see more women taking up running now too. We see lots of mums whose children area bit older, finding themselves at a point in their lives when they want to do something to keep fit. They choose running as it’s sociable, relatively inexpensive and helps with both mental and physical wellbeing. When we first opened, most of our customers were male club runners, but that has significantly changed. It is now about 50-50 in terms of men and women and we have seen some new customers who have taken up running, possibly for the first time, during lockdown.

“When we first opened, most of our customers were male club runners, but that has significantly changed.”

Local Trails Trail running is particularly popular as we have beautiful countryside on our doorstep, which is easily accessible and free to use. You need the right shoes as road running trainers are of little use along the Downs Link or through fields in the depths of winter. We sell spiked track shoes too, and there’s a level of interest from juniors at Horsham Blue Star Harriers, at least so long as the athletics track remains. We continue to offer junior shoes and regularly see family groups. The internet is becoming more challenging, as people are going there to purchase everything. But running shoes are something you need to try on and test, which you can’t do online. We go through the processes necessary to make sure someone leaves with the right shoes and that does lead to a degree of loyalty. The shop has recently been refurbished, due to a leak coming

from an adjacent property during lockdown. Fortunately, I was popping in every few days and discovered it before it caused more severe damage. But it required a refit, so it feels like a new shop.

Exploring on Foot One day, I’ll think about retirement, but I'm happy for now. I still run, occasionally with Horsham Joggers or other groups but often on my own, as I enjoy the solitude. I've always enjoyed running and the shop is an extension of that. There's such a wonderful network of places you can get enjoy locally and I love exploring the paths and trails in this area. Every time you go outside, there’s a new challenge and that’s what’s so satisfying about it.

HENRY ADAMS

REPORTS A SURGE IN DEMAND AFTER STYLISH REFURBISHMENT

H

enry Adams has invested in a refurbishment of its Sales office in the heart of Horsham’s Carfax. Due to social distancing guidelines, the team have been unable to host a celebratory event. However, the stylish, contemporary new look has been well received. Nick Hapgood, Sales Director at Henry Adams, said: “It hasn’t been possible to host a grand opening, but our customers appreciate the relaxed, informal seating area, where they’re not having to talk to us across a desk. We have also refreshed the meeting room, which offers peace and privacy when required.” Since returning to the office, the experienced Sales team have been as busy as ever before.

“There was strong demand in Horsham at the start of the year, but during lockdown, people have had the time to reflect on their personal situation. We’ve seen people upsize and downsize, and many are seeking a move away from London. Then of course, the Government announced a Stamp Duty holiday, which led to a surge in enquiries, resulting in homes selling 30% faster than before lockdown.” “Horsham has its own ‘bubble’ and people move here for many different reasons. It has good schools and is perfect for families with its vibrant market town, beautiful park, leisure facilities and easy access to the countryside and coast. It’s less than an hour’s commute to the City and has close links to Gatwick too. That creates a strong community that people want to be a part of.”

There’s a double celebration at the Sales office, with Nick having become a Director. He has worked in the industry for 20 years, gaining vast experience of the local property market before joining the Henry Adams team two years ago. “I’m proud to have been made a Director,” remarked Nick. “I have a fantastic team working alongside me in Horsham, with Ali Martin, Emma Crouch and Lloyd Wilkinson our full-time Sales team. As well as having dedicated Sales and Lettings offices in the town centre, Henry Adams has departments for Land and New Homes, Commercial Property, and Agriculture and Rural, so there’s a vast pool of knowledge and expertise we can call upon and that is one of the things that stands us apart.” www.henryadams.co.uk

A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE SLINFOLD GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB ADAPTS FOR THE TIMES

S

linfold Golf & Country Club has found creative solutions as exercise classes resume with social distancing guidelines.

The Lounge Bar is open to non-members (©AAH/Toby Phillips)

As well as hosting sessions indoors, a marquee has been erected close to the entrance, providing space for up to 24 people to exercise at a safe distance. With restrictions meaning studio sessions can only offer room for a small number of people, the marquee offers members the chance to take part in vibrant, instructor-led sessions. The Club is holding Yoga, Pilates, Zumba, Body Combat and Body Balance classes as well as Aqua Aerobics and “Poolates” in its pristine swimming pool. General Manager Luke Blacker commented: “Members are enjoying exercising ‘inside outside’ and when the sun is shining, we’ve opened up the sides of the marquee. Our members have adapted too and are arriving ‘gymready’ with their own exercise mats.

The Retreat has a Jessica Nails suite (©AAH/Toby Phillips)

“In addition to the marquee, we have created a new outdoor training area with a versatile, artificial surface, making it ideal for bootcamp-style training. This is in response to members’ requests for outdoor training throughout the year.”

FOGGING MACHINES Innovative solutions have been implemented in the gym too. With some people understandably cautious about returning, staff close the gym for fifteen minutes after each session, to carry out a clean-down of the equipment. Additionally, a fogging machine is used twice daily to sanitise the equipment, including the latest machinery by TechnoGym.

A RARE AND REMARKABLE SUMMER SUCCESS STORY

W

hen Kaya was forced to close merely four days after opening its doors for the first time, it didn’t seem that fortune was smiling on its ambitious owners. Yet the Horsham Park venue was to become a remarkable success story of lockdown, grasping a unique opportunity to cater for the community as restrictions eased. AAH met co-founders Candice Klopper (Candy) and Benita Uys-Wright…

Colour co-ordination is key at Kaya (©AAH/Toby Phillips)

Untapped Potential For Benita, the café next to the Horsham Park bandstand was an untapped opportunity. Whilst it had been operating successfully as The Conservatory Cafe for a decade, she felt it had the potential to offer more. When she discovered the lease was available, Benita couldn’t help but dream. However, undergoing chemotherapy in her fight against cancer, she wondered if the challenge was too much to take on.

African Inspiration They collected the keys on Valentine’s Day, knowing the building required repairs and redecoration to fulfil their vision. As well as plumbing and electrical issues, window frames were rotting, leading to careful repairs on the listed building. But it was in the decoration where Candy and Benita’s ideas came to the fore. Crystal chandeliers were hung in the orangery and in came hanging baskets, contemporary wicker chairs and wooden tables, a purpose-built marble-topped bar and a co-ordinated splash of pillows and blankets. Bird of paradise palms completed the vibrant dÊcor, inspired by South Africa, where Candy originates and where Benita spent childhood vacations.

Days later, Benita’s family went pumpkin picking with friends and neighbours Candy and Tristan Mason, chef at his own Michelinstarred restaurant in East Street. “Candy invited us round for lunch afterwards, wanting to talk about something,â€? recalls Benita. “When she mentioned the cafĂŠ, I said, ‘You’re not going to believe this!’ I had the same idea!’ “We felt the cafe had huge potential so decided to go for it, in the hope that I would have completed my treatment by the time any decision was made. With Candy well known in the town through Restaurant Tristan, our bid was successful and we agreed terms with Horsham District Council.â€?

“South Africans don't tend to go out for dinner and when they do, it’s typically as a large group, says Candy. “It’s more common for people to meet at an open house to share food and drink. That's our heritage and how we are as friends. We’re always popping round each other’s house to rustle something up in the kitchen! “We wanted the same ethos for our business, so people feel they’re part of a homely, shared experience. Turning that concept into a viable business isn’t easy and we have to hold ourselves back sometimes, as we can be too eager to please. So, Kaya is a little bit of us. Even the name is a Zulu word, meaning a place of rest, with many positive connotations.

Pandemic Strikes When Kaya was ready to welcome customers, the timing couldn’t have been less fortunate. With Coronavirus spreading, the political and social climate was rapidly shifting when Kaya welcomed guests for a drinks reception on the evening of Friday 15 March. It opened to the public the following Monday, but by Friday was forced to close.

“We'd been so busy that we hadn’t given ourselves time to think about what might happen,” says Candy. “We kept ploughing on, so we were heartbroken when we had to close after four days. Yet even lockdown didn’t stop us. We were baking at home, experimenting with wild garlics and trying different recipes. We utilised the time and made sure that when we could re-open with a takeaway service, we were ready.”

“South Africans tend to meet at an open house to share food and drink. That's our heritage and how we are as friends.” Candy and Benita reacted quickly, opening on the morning of VE Day (Friday 8 May), to gauge public demand. It proved more popular than they ever imagined. “Nobody else had re-opened and the Park was bustling with people using it for exercise,” says Candy. “When we opened, people told us that it was like a light being switched on. Being shut for so long had been a stark reminder of the situation we all faced. Suddenly, there was life again and every day was busier than the last.

In Uncertain Times, Secure a Rate Quickly The current climates continue to affect the mortgage market in many ways. We’ve seen lenders pull rates quickly, decreasing rates one day and increasing them the next. We’ve seen some lenders remove the higher LTVs (Loan to values) 95%, some removing 90% and others removing 85%. We have seen some lenders launch limited edition products and others have not re-entered the market at all! All signs of the times and of the fast-moving pace of the money markets.

We felt a bit guilty, as we did very well, as Horsham Park was a place where people could gather. We saw customers crying, as we’d opened at a time when they needed some form of interaction. It meant a lot to them and to us.”

Fantastic Food Whilst Kaya’s location has been pivotal, just as important to its early success has been fantastic food and drink. The owners have incorporated their favourite recipes and taken inspiration from businesses such as Milk Train in Covent Garden, famed for its ice-creams, offering an experience that in many ways captures the essence of modern-day Horsham. Its breakfast and lunch menu includes the Big Daddy Sandwich, Wellness Bowl (brown rice tabbouleh, Israeli couscous and roasted vegetable baby beets, goat’s cheese and roasted hazelnuts, with salmon or chicken as optional extras). Drinks including mint and elderflower iced tea or the spinach, kale and

The only certainty seems to be uncertainty and where lenders may have previously considered clients on furlough, or those who have taken bounce back loans within their businesses, this may have changed as lenders look to ensure clients can afford the mortgage for the next six months and onwards. Some require a letter from the client to confirm this whereas others may require to view bank statements to prove they have the funding. Some lenders may have previously taken all of a client’s bonus or commission when working out affordability, but more recently have reduced this The criteria for mortgages is changing to 50% of received monies. quickly amongst lenders We’ve seen one lender limit the maximum term of the mortgage to 25 years for first time buyers and change their acceptance on where deposits come from, for example - gifted deposits.

pineapple smoothie, and treats such as ice cream topped with caramel popcorn have also proved a hit with those seeking some excitement after the lull of lockdown. As well as working with a leading coffee supplier, Kaya has partnered with Polygon in Piries Place to create an enticing range of piña coladas and other cocktails.

With changes happening quickly, it is vital you get all the documentation required to the lender as quickly as possible to secure your rate and that product availability. Especially as some lenders are receiving pre-Covid volumes of business, but only with 50-70% of normal staffing levels. This means that some lenders can be weeks behind and if you only provide certain items, you may find that you go to the back of the queue when the outstanding items required are submitted, which extends the delays.

Although the indoor dining area has remained closed due to restrictions, evening services will offer the same relaxed dining experience, with consideration given to the ever-evolving needs of customers. Candy said:

Most lenders will no longer prioritise the valuation of the security property. They will assess the whole mortgage application and confirm agreement to proceed before instructing the valuation. Be aware of this as Estate Agents need the valuation instructed asap. Depending on the lender you go with, this could take a few weeks. Finally, expect this to continue for some time. Not just because of the ongoing pandemic, but also with the stamp duty temporary changes taking effect, a lot of people are trying to move before the end of March deadline. Good for the property market, but who knows what may happen with processing, criteria and resulting inevitable delays over the coming weeks and months.

“People have been asking for different milks, so we have two soya milks, as you need to listen to customers. The whole team here understands what we are trying to achieve, as if you're making food and drink with positivity, people will feed off that. “We feel we’re creating a little bubble in this area and have become protective of the park, even doing litter picking! The nicer the environment around us, the better it is for everyone!”

Future Plans Kaya has been granted permission for a guest room, as well as a fully-functioning kitchen with pizza oven. It is also hoped there will soon be a Tuk Tuk serving coffee or Italian ice cream around the park during busy periods. Even the décor will change with the seasons. “This is our summer vibe!” says Benita. “In recent weeks, we’ve offered barbecues with our Big Green Egg, as well as cocktails. It’s been lovely, as families have been walking to the park, with parents sitting down for a drink in the evening while the children play. As we head into winter, there will be more of an alpine lodge feel and we’ll be altering the menu, as it’s important to evolve.” Kaya serves a range of hot drinks and pastries (©AAH/Toby Phillips)

“We saw customers literally crying, as we’d opened at a time when they needed some form of interaction.”

“It’s been a great start for us, but we’re not the kind of people to rest on our laurels. There’s so much we want to achieve. So far, the support has been wonderful. Lots of people are thinking more about where their food is sourced and want to help local businesses. We hope that as we come out of lockdown and life returns to normality, people continue to feel that way, as it’s vitally important.”

CLAY TIME

TEACHING THE ART OF POTTERY AT CERAMIC SPIRIT

T

Ceramic Spirit before lockdown (©Toby Phillips Photography/AAH)

here is great satisfaction in creating an object from clay with your bare hands. It’s fun and therapeutic - even if the final piece doesn’t always come out exactly as you imagined!

However, very few places cater for the teaching of this essential skill and novices buying their own pottery wheel will often find that the art of ‘throwing’ is hard to master without expert guidance. It is this knowledge that Julie Murphy provides through her business, Ceramic Spirit, based at her Horsham home. “There are several places where you can pick up a plain plate or bowl that’s already been fired, then sit down and paint before glazing it,” says Julie. “But there wasn’t anywhere local that people could go to and learn about pottery, with the opportunity to create their own work from start to finish. As I was already using the studio for my own work, I decided to launch Ceramic Spirit.”

BOUNCING IDEAS Julie has previously worked as an art technician at schools in south-east London, where she lived previously. The experience of teaching young people pottery was something she enjoyed, so she continues to offer classes for home-schooled children

and after-school classes. For adult groups, it brings social benefits by bringing people with a shared passion together. “I’m flexible with my approach, so people don't necessarily start together and all maintain a similar rate of progress,” says Julie. “Everyone has other commitments so the group evolves. It means there’s different levels of experience around the table and we all bounce ideas around.”

“Typically, I teach newcomers the slab roll technique first. This involves a flat piece of clay, sometimes imprinted with a decoration such as lace. It is then rolled in to a vase or other vessel. It’s a simple yet effective method. Then after a while, people might try sculpture or learn how to ‘throw’ pottery on the wheel. That’s far more difficult than it looks!”

Joanna, Helen and Megan at Ceramic Spirit (©Toby Phillips Photography/AAH)

“Soon enough, everyone finds what it is that they enjoy most of all and start coming up with their own ideas. Often, they find photos on Pinterest and that gives them inspiration. I’m here to make sure that they get the basics right, like rolling out air bubbles to prevent splitting in the kiln.” “In the main, those in the group work independently and at their own pace. We have a colour board for earthenware and stoneware pottery, so the painting and glazing elements cause us plenty of discussion, which contributes to a great atmosphere.”

KEEP THE SPARK When not running classes, Julie takes the opportunity to focus on her own work. Having the business removes much of the commercial pressure of art, allowing Julie to be inventive with diverse with her output. The objects and sculpture she creates are so wide ranging that Julie doesn’t have a distinctive style of her own. Not that she’s worried... “When pottery is your sole income, you can fall into the trap of making the same thing over and again, as you know it sells and you need to earn a living. Many people I met while studying for my degree in Ceramics are working for commercial reasons now. When you do that, the spark disappears. I didn’t want to fall into that trap as I want to maintain my enjoyment.”

“So, I use a wide selection of colours and effects, working on projects of all shapes and sizes. I tend to juggle several projects at any given time, be it a hare sculpture or a commissioned vase.”

THROW BACK People join the group for a variety of reasons. Young people are often brought along by parents as pottery has been largely neglected by schools lacking space for turning wheels or the finances for kilns. Some of the adults attending have other interests in creative arts, whilst others have been inspired by programmes like The Great British Throw Down. Joanna Gill, a screen printing and textiles enthusiast, received vouchers for Christmas, after requesting

“something creative.” Laura Cottingham wanted a hobby that allowed her to be more creative. “I work in a stressful environment at a London theatre, commuting and working long hours,” says Laura. “I need something to calm me down and this is ideal.” Whether making bowls, vases, cups or saucers, the class is full of praise for Julie’s teaching. “The atmosphere here is always relaxed,” says Helen Simmans. “There’s a lot of talk about mindfulness these days and this caters for that perfectly!”

In March, sensing a lockdown was imminent, Julie provided clay and tools so that people could finish projects at home. Julie said: “Knowing some of my students were on the vulnerable list and would have to self-isolate, I knew that being able to continue with ceramics would benefit their mental health immensely. So, I started a WhatsApp group and set challenges! A few people have been able to buy a potter’s wheel, so I’ve been setting throwing tasks to improve their skills. I’ve also had more time for my own work, and finished the hare sculpture. I asked people to suggest a name for him for one pound, with proceeds going to the NHS.” Since restrictions have been relaxed, Julie has opened the studio for one-to-one lessons, with social distancing measures. 600 YEARS

NEW BOOK CHARTS SIX CENTURIES OF MUSEUM BUILDING

I

Causeway House as it looked in the 1880s (©HDC’s Horsham Museum & Art Gallery)

t was in 1420, or thereabouts, that the owner of a 13th century building decided to create a new home and office complex next to his timber framed barn.

Little did he realise that parts of it would still be standing 600 years later and it would become the home of merchants, lawyers, an heiress, an antiques dealer, a tutor to the Romanian Royal family and used as a base for making 37,000 gas masks. Today, it is the home of Horsham Museum and Art Gallery. The Museum had planned to celebrate 600 years of history with an exhibition. Instead, as it remains closed due to Covid19, Museum Manager Jeremy Knight tells the story in a book, Causeway House: A Biography of a Horsham landmark, priced at £7.50 (plus postage) and available by emailing museum@horsham.gov.uk or at Waterstones in Horsham. Here, Jeremy reveals snippets about the building’s history…

MARKET TOWN Overlooking one of Sussex’s most attractive streets, Causeway House is the gateway to a tree-lined gallery of 500 years of domestic architecture. However, when it was built, the four-bayed house didn’t even face the Causeway; it faced north into the rapidly growing market town. Only 200 years later was it altered to face the Causeway. The origins of Causeway House lie in a lost building, erected as Horsham was just developing into a bustling market town. Next to this, a timber-framed home and workplace was erected. Three of that building’s original sections survive today, with architectural remains telling us that the building dates to around 1420. By late Georgian times, Causeway House had seen many changes, from the addition of a grand staircase to re-arranging the rooms. Whilst little remains from that time, a magnificent 1670s table somehow somehow has, while archaeological excavations in the 1970s uncovered fragments of pottery discarded in the garden.

WALNUT FASHION

IMPOSING NEW HOUSE

Between 1580 -1620, the Parkhursts - a family of mercers - lived at Causeway House. They undertook major alterations, with Edward Parkhurst building a shop-type building to face the Causeway, whilst he lived in medieval buildings to the rear. Eventually, he wanted a house fitting of his status and wealth. So, an imposing new house with wood panelling was constructed the tallest in the Causeway. It is probably around this time that Causeway House acquired its Horsham Stone roof. The Borough survey of 1611 also records that the plot had a horse mill, suggesting that grinding took place.

There seems to have been some internal modernisation when walnut was fashionable, in about 1670. The large “sill” beam was exposed but given a fake walnut graining. It was also around this time that the owners had the large refectory table made for the house. Over the years, it’s had many uses, including as a shove halfpenny board.

The next major phase of building work took place around 1680, when the medieval section of the house was extended into what is now the garden. By this time, the house was being used by a solicitor, Matthew White, as a home and office. He was succeeded by his great-nephew, George Arnold (whose initials, along with those of his wife Elizabeth Linfield, can be seen on the hopper of a drain pipe).

Around 1730, Causeway House was given a new look, with the timbers encased in brick. Thomas Parham was living in Causeway House for the renovations. A narrow, twostoried range to the south and east was built alongside the two and a half storied Tudor building, wrapping around in an ‘L’ shape. Also, the old parlour was transformed into an entrance hall with a grand staircase, with the house extending outwards into the garden and upwards to create the rooms which now house galleries on ‘Horsham History’ and ‘Shopping in Horsham.’ There were other significant changes, including the insertion of the bay windows, with the interior space of the house deliberately pushed out in to the public realm. In the 18th century, with stylish dining becoming the battleground for aspiring classes, a new room was created as a ‘theatre’ in which to perform the spectacle.

By this time, the house was in the possession of the Hurst family. After the death of the widow Sarah Hurst, her wealth went to her relatives, who bought Park House, with Causeway House became less important to the family. But the Hurst family continued to invest in Causeway House, extending and re-roofing around 1820-40.

QUEEN VISITS By the late 1920s, Captain Antony had bought the building and used it as a home and an extension of his retail antiques business. In April 1927, it was reported that Queen Mary had visited: “It was at ten minutes past six when the Daimler drew up in the square in front of the Town Hall. Her Majesty, accompanied by two ladies, looked in the Horsham Weavers window. It will be recalled that the Queen recently purchased a scarf from their stall at the Exhibition. The stop at Horsham was made, it seems, to call upon Captain Anthony, who is known to the Royal Family and who came to Horsham towards the close of 1925 and opened the Armada Galleries in Market Square, afterwards taking up his residence at Causeway House. The Queen went in and was there for nearly 20

minutes. The news of Her Majesty’s presence in the town soon spread, and there was a small crowd.” Captain Anthony has been a pupil of Philip de Laszlo, a well-known Hungarian painter. In 1909, he became a tutor to the Romanian Royal Family and assisted with the upbringing of Prince Carol, who became King Carol II in 1930, and Prince Nicholas. After the First World War, where he lost a leg, he moved to Horsham and ran Armada Antique Galleries at 6 Market Square. In 1938, Horsham was preparing for possible war. The Urban District Council used Causeway House for a year, as an office for the Women’s Voluntary Services to carry out ARP (Air Raid Precautions) work. The building would be used to store and construct 37,000 gas masks. When in 1939, Horsham Museum Society were told to leave the basement of Park House, as the building was required for the war effort, they moved into Causeway House. Once the war was over, the Council continue to lease the building. It wasn’t until the 1960s that the Council employed its first curator and gave the Museum the whole of the building and part of the garden.
