THE INSIDE EDGE

A LETTER FROM THE CEO 2017 has been a dominant year for Musto in the sailing world. Firstly, the top three sailors in the Vendée Globe solo around the world race all trusted in our kit, with Musto ambassador Armel Le Cléac’h, a relentless competitor, coming out on top in his third attempt at winning the race. Only a few weeks later the evergreen Francis Joyon and his crew onboard the maxi-multihull ‘IDEC’ captured the Jules Verne Trophy, the prize for the fastest non-stop circumnavigation of the world by any yacht. If you include the Ian Walker skippered Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, all the current holders of the Volvo Ocean Race, Vendée Globe and Jules Verne Trophy all placed their faith in Musto to protect them from the harsh environments racing around the world. An incredible feat that no other sailing clothing brand can stack a claim to, which in turn made 2017 a truly memorable year for Musto. Looking ahead to 2018, the Volvo Ocean Race fleet will be half way around the world and will be departing from Melbourne, Australia in January as they continue their fight for the highly coveted trophy. As the definitive event in the sailing calendar, it sees the best ocean sailors in the world pit themselves against the elements. In 2018, you won’t be able to get any closer to the Southern Ocean as a spectator. The Onboard Reporters (OBRs), who are this time taking part objectively with no attachment to a particular team will be providing race content through cutting-edge technology. Musto are the chosen suppliers of the OBR’s as they work around the clock in the harshest environments on earth providing fans front row seats to the action in the Southern Ocean in as close to real-time than has ever been possible before. This should be enough to keep any sailing fan hooked as the fleet circumnavigate the world. Coinciding with our partnership with The Volvo Ocean Race, Vestas 11th Hour Racing, Turn

the Tide on Plastic and The Ocean Cleanup, we unveiled a major milestone alongside the Volvo Ocean Race merchandise range. We’ve made major innovations to drive sustainability in our global business operations, despite the considerable operational challenges it posed. This involved exploring ways of making savings in plastics without jeopardising the quality of goods that our customers receive: an initiative that reduced the weight of plastic used in the packaging and delivery of Musto goods by a very significant 70%. Other exciting improvements have stemmed from these collaborations. The new Dinghy collection, which was launched in 2017, is being fined tuned further, thanks to a close collaboration with the British Sailing Team. Strong partnerships like this enable the Musto design team to continue to benefit from the experience of the world’s best sailing professionals, by combining applied feedback with cutting-edge innovation. By working closely with world-class sailors, such as Armel Le Cléac’h, Ian Walker, Sam Davies and Olympic sailors, to name just a few, Musto’s experienced design team have turned concepts into a reality for 2018, pushing the boundaries of sailing garment design even further. Working with our world class sailing ambassadors, we’ve redesigned the iconic MPX range, which is already a firm favourite of big boat sailors around the world, as well as the high-performance LPX Dynamic range, which incorporates the latest fabric technology from GORE-TEX®. From the cuff design of the new MPX Smock, the stretch of the GORE-TEX® fabric in the LPX Salopette, to the design of the HPX spume guard; it is attention to the finer details that keep Musto at the forefront, leading the way as the world’s number one sailing brand.

MUSTO HPX IN VOLVO OCEAN RACE

Back in the mid-1980s no one had even conceived of a large keelboat that could lift out of displacement mode and on to the plane. Life onboard was a good deal more comfortable back then, and although the pace of the race was not exactly sedate, it wasn’t as “by-the-moment” as it has become today. ‘The boats have become more physical, way faster and therefore also wetter,’ says Bekking of the Volvo Ocean 65s that the fleet races today. ‘Over the years, Musto has done a great job developing foul weather gear, which is breathable and flexible, allowing you to do your job and keeping you dry in the meantime.’ The company is already in talks with the Volvo Ocean Race organisers for the next edition.

40 YEARS OF FEEDBACK Musto has been with the Volvo Ocean Race pretty much since it began, back in 1973, working closely with the sailors to learn from their feedback and putting their real-life experience back into the next iteration of the

4|

At the end of the last Volvo Ocean Race, Rhone and his team set about completely redesigning the top-of-the-range offshore line known as HPX. ‘The previous HPX smock was made up of 12 panels and in 2016 reduced to four panels, that’s how we’ve stripped out 200g of weight. Everything you can reduce saves somewhere. Taking seams out reduces factory processes, removing seams not only decreases seam tape consumption it also makes the garments far more durable. The seams are the weakest points on a performance garment. In regards to the design approach it’s a definite case of less-is-more. Every little bit of weight adds up to a saving, and also makes the garment more durable. ‘Almost everything we changed was because of the feedback we received from the sailors in the last Volvo,’ he says. ‘For example we had a bowman ripping holes in their smock pocket because of the tools and sharp things he was putting in there. So now every pocket on an HPX garment is fully lined with CORDURA®, the same reinforcement we put in the knee panels. ‘Then there are other things like the internal hem adjusters, where we’d always used the typical round hem adjuster.

MAN OR MACHINE? Some manufacturers of offshore clothing are attempting to replicate the real-life rigours of ocean racing through extensive machine testing of their fabrics and garments. This is an important part of the testing process, certainly, but Rhone says machines only tell you part of the story. ‘You can do all kinds of testing in a machine and in lab conditions, but it doesn’t pick up on the kind of detail and honest feedback that you get from sailors who have been at sea for a month. Human interaction and feedback is what counts more than anything.’ While Ian Walker has stepped away from a long and successful career in professional racing to become the new race director at the Royal Yachting Association, he’ll still be following this next edition of the Volvo Ocean Race very closely. ‘I wouldn’t want to start the race in kit that I hadn’t tested myself sufficiently, which means sailing a three or four-week leg in a range of conditions. I think there’s a big difference between lab conditions and what it actually like on the water. I try to control the controllables, and clothing is very controllable. You just go with what you know works perfectly.’

sailors using an evolution of what they were wearing three years ago, Rhone and his team are preparing themselves for a revolution. The radical foil-assisted design for the next edition is going to demand a complete rethink. ‘It’s going to be even faster, wetter, more dangerous,’ says Rhone. ‘The sailors are going to require much more protection from impact. Fortunately we’ve already done a lot of work in that area and developed garments with Franck Cammas and Groupama Team France for the America’s Cup, and we’ve come out with our Foiling Range of dinghy garments, which incorporates D3O™ impact protection. While, we don’t know much of the detail about the new Volvo boats, we did work with Armel Le Cléac’h in providing him with the kit for winning the Vendée Globe, so we’ve got a great place to start from in terms of understanding these foil-assisted monohulls.’ Rhone has worked across many different sports, but says there’s nothing to touch offshore racing for the demands placed on clothing. ‘I can’t think of anything as gruelling or demanding on the kit as the Volvo Ocean Race. If you’re in the middle of the ocean and something goes wrong with your kit, you’re kind of buggered. Which is why sailors keep placing their trust in Musto.

Team Brunel is going with Musto, as indeed are three of the seven crews competing in the 2017-18 edition of the race. Since Bekking first took part in the 1985-86 edition of what was then known as The Whitbread Round the World Race, the boats have become exponentially faster.

The GORE-TEX® fabric around that was literally rubbing through, it was making a hole inside the fabric so we changed that to a flat cordlock and that eliminated the problem immediately. Some people were saying the internal stormguard was chafing their chin. So angling the point to a really soft curve, solved the chafe problem. It’s those tiny things that makes the difference to the whole.’ If those changes do sound like tiny differences, then remember that in the last edition of the race some of the ocean legs - lasting days and weeks at a time - were sometimes decided by a matter of a few minutes or even seconds at the finish line. These days, more than ever, every little helps.

FASTER, HIGHER, WETTER While this coming edition of the Volvo Ocean Race will see the world’s best offshore

T H WH E

Few people have been involved in the Volvo Ocean Race for as long as Bouwe Bekking who, as the skipper of Team Brunel, is about to embark on his eighth campaign in the world’s toughest offshore contest. Bekking knows where his priorities lie: what the crucial factors are between a winning and a losing campaign. And one thing he’s not going to mess about with is clothing.

company’s offshore kit. Design Manager of Sailing at Musto, Shane Rhone, says there is no substitute for this kind of direct, honest feedback. ‘If your kit doesn’t deliver what these sailors want, they will absolutely tell you about it,’ he says, adding that one of the most forthright sailors is Ian Walker, winning skipper of the last edition of the Volvo Ocean Race with Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing. ‘Listening to feedback from people like Ian is not always easy at the time,’ Rhone admits, ‘but it’s what enables us to make sure that the next evolution of our clothing delivers to the highest expectations in the most extreme conditions.’

Designing the very best offshore kit is always a compromise between various vital factors: weight, mobility, comfort, waterproofness, durability and reliability. You can’t have everything all in one garment. Well actually, according to Rhone, that isn’t necessarily so. Not always. ‘When sailors get used to a certain weight of clothing and we come out with the next evolution and it feels lighter and more mobile, they can take some convincing that it’s as least as waterproof and durable as their previous kit,’ he says. ‘We saw this when we came to the market with our new MPX Race Lite range in 2016 when we reduced the weight by 15 to 20 per cent, and we had sailors telling us they didn’t see how

D

THE HARSHEST CONDITIONS ON EARTH

it could be as durable as the offshore fabric. ‘The problem with sailing is there’s a mentality that if it’s too light, it’s not going to be durable or reliable. There’s a feeling that they’ll snag it it will rip that it won’t last. You have to use it for a while before you can trust it to do what we say it’s going to do. Another example if you go back five years, is that everything was lined with a standard flat face fleece, whereas if you look at any sports brand now they used a grid fleece. Like for like you can use a lighter fleece that will give you a greater warmth-to-weight ratio. The grid is where they’ve removed fleece, but how it works is that your body heat is trapped within that structure so it creates a microclimate that keeps you warmer. When we updated our GORE-TEX® midlayer with a grid fleece lining, a lot of people complained because they said it felt too light. But over time people have realised that you can have something that is lighter and warmer and now all of the fleece-lined pockets in our garments use microgrid fleece. Sometimes perceptions take a while to catch up with the new reality.’

Walker has worked with a number of garment manufacturers over the years, but says that Musto had perhaps been the most focused on development and evolution of their kit. ‘I think that’s one of their main motivations for being involved at the top level.’ The feeling in the company is that if the HPX kit will last a professional sailor for the duration of a Volvo Ocean Race, it will most likely give a typical offshore sailor up to 11 or 12 years of good, reliable usage.

New for 2018, Musto have reinvented an old-favourite. Created in 1995 after the development of the pioneering HPX the previous year, MPX first incorporated GORE-TEX® fabric in 1998. The range broke new ground on the way to becoming popular in the yachting world amongst racing and cruising sailors alike. MPX now takes another significant step in its journey as it is refined further to meet the demands of the modern-day sailor.

The transition between monohull to multihull is natural, and the latest giant trimaran is a result of a mix of Armel’s experiences and the best cutting-edge technology, examples of which could be seen during the America’s Cup. His boat is also equipped with foils and loadbearing plans on the rudders to make it fly, allowing it to cover over 800 nautical miles daily. ©Vincent Curutchet / DPPI

The 2016-2017 Vendée Globe winner, Armel Le Cléac’h, having secured first place in 74 days and 3 hours, is now looking to embrace a significant new challenge. This recordbreaker will now fly on three hulls, first with his crew, then single-handed aboard his Maxi Solo Banque Populaire IX multihull. On 19th January 2017, in Les Sables d’Olonne in arctic conditions, a champion throws his arms to the sky before being overwhelmed with emotion. A beacon of victory in immaculate white and yellow HPX garments, Armel Le Cléac’h had just won the 8th edition of the Vendée Globe on his 60’ monohull Banque Populaire VIII. Man and boat appear virtually untouched after 27,000 nautical miles, with an astonishing 15.43 knots average speed. His duel against Alex Thomson (Hugo Boss) was exciting from beginning to end. “I’ve never given up. I only envisaged victory on the last night,

16 |

while I was sailing along Brittany coast. I wanted it so much,” he reminisces. Given the nickname The Jackal by his rivals, he was the hotly anticipated favourite during his third consecutive participation in the Vendée Globe. Armel was supported by an exceptional team, finishing second twice behind Michel Desjoyaux (2009) and François Gabart (2013). “Those boats are fabulous but violent: really uncomfortable and also very complex, with a permanent humidity that felt like you were under a fire hose,” he recalls.

“WHEN I STARTED OFFSHORE SAILING, I BOUGHT MUSTO GARMENTS. BEFORE I JOINED TEAM BANQUE POPULAIRE ON 2011, I ALREADY LOVED THOSE TECHNICAL AND HEAVY-DUTY CLOTHES.”

A meticulous perfectionist, the sailor, who suffered from childhood seasickness except when his father gave him the helm while cruising, had left nothing to chance before the race - including his clothing. He stringently selected and tested everything himself, from his gloves to his HPX kit. “It is crucial to stay dry on those boats, especially because it’s quite complicated to dry clothes onboard. Feeling good by wearing comfortable, flexible and waterproof clothing is essential to stay focused on the race, whether you are in Southern seas or under tropics. It’s critical to your morale,” says the sailor. “When I started offshore sailing, I bought Musto garments. Before I joined Team Banque Populaire on 2011, I already loved those technical and heavy-duty clothes. During my first Vendée Globe, I was convinced that I’d made the right choice,” he enthuses. “An around-the-world tour is a ruthless laboratory. What I like about Musto, aside from permanent exchanges and

tour in autumn 2019, Armel Le Cléac’h will try to beat his record on the Route de la Découverte between Cadiz to San-Salvador (3,150 nautical miles) in 6 days and 23 hours. “No matter the type of boat, all the clothes I wear onboard should be tested and proven before I leave,” Armel comments determinedly. “We won’t change the way we work on this new trimaran, and we will probably be selecting lighter clothes when sailing as a team than the ones I choose for my solo circumnavigation”.

the potential to personalise garments, is the ability to feedback to the designers, which at the end of the day, benefits everyone.”

“FLEXIBLE AND WATERPROOF CLOTHING IS ESSENTIAL TO STAY FOCUSED ON THE RACE” During his circumnavigation, Armel follows the build of his new Ultim class trimaran daily. Measurements of this flying, futuristic giant can make a person dizzy: 32 meters by 23 meters, a 38 meter high base-hinged mast and 890 square meter downwind sails all totaling only 15 tonnes. After 20 months in shipbuilding facilities, this “monster” has just touched the water.

MOVING THROUGH THE RANKS

Interview with Haydn Sewell, Musto ambassador

YOU’VE BEEN A PART OF THE OPTIMIST CLASS SINCE YOU FIRST STARTED SAILING. WHAT HAS BEEN THE BEST THING ABOUT THIS? The Optimist Class is a well-organised, friendly class that can help you develop into a good sailor. I’ve made some brilliant friends through sailing an Opi, and my best friends are all from the class: as well as great sailing, you’ll always have a great laugh. Another good thing about the Optimist Class is that there are many international events, which create opportunities to make friends from other countries. I’m in touch with a lot of sailors from all around the world on social media. The Optimist is also a great boat to learn to sail in. It’s quite easy to sail in a lot of different wind conditions but also has excellent technical features to learn. WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT OF YOUR FINAL YEAR IN THE OPTIMIST CLASS? WAS THERE MORE EXPECTATION AND PRESSURE ON YOUR SHOULDERS AS ONE OF THE OLDER KIDS? My most challenging event this year has got to be the Optimist World Championships in Thailand because every country puts their top 5 best sailors forward. All this quality in one fleet is very challenging, and mistakes can be costly! The conditions were tricky too with mostly light winds, strange tides and then the occasional squall. The local sailors seemed to know conditions the best. I’ve been in the national squad for four years and went to the Euros aged 12, so I’ve felt under pressure to perform for a while. Slowly I have been learning to deal with the pressure. So this year, despite it still being there, I was able to cope with it much better, have a lot of fun and put in some good performances.

YOU’VE MADE THE TRANSITION INTO THE 420 CLASS VERY QUICKLY. WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE THIS CLASS AHEAD OF OTHER BOATS YOU COULD HAVE SAILED? DO YOUR SIZE AND PHYSIQUE PLAY A ROLE IN THIS? I knew that, because I’m quite small, I was always going to end up in a two-handed boat like a 29er or 420. I chose the 420 because I enjoy the technical side of sailing, and with the 420, there are lots of stuff to adjust to sail at your best. Also, the 420 class are so nice; many of my friends are going into it. THERE ARE LOTS OF OPTIONS AVAILABLE TO KIDS AS THEY GROW UP AND TRANSITION FROM ONE CLASS TO ANOTHER. WHAT WOULD YOUR ADVICE BE TO OTHERS THAT ARE UNSURE ABOUT WHICH DIRECTION TO HEAD? If you are going to sail with someone else, make sure you get on with them so that you can have the most fun. It also makes learning to communicate with each other (after you’ve come out of Oppies) a lot quicker. Also, you can move from one junior class to another to help transition into your youth boat. For example, going from an Oppie to a Feva can help transition into a 29er later on. I think the main thing is to be sailing in a boat you enjoy, make sure you have fun but also always learning and creating goals.

YOU REPRESENTED YOUR COUNTRY AT THE OPTIMIST WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS FINISHING A VERY CREDIBLE 52ND AND 2ND BRIT. WHAT WERE THE MOST IMPORTANT LEARNINGS FROM THIS EVENT THAT WILL HELP YOU WITH THE REST OF YOUR SAILING CAREER? The most important lesson from this event is how much you can do on-shore to help prepare yourself and increase your chances of winning. Simple stuff like washing your boat, triple-checking sail ties and having a good lifestyle and routine. The more effort you put in, the more you will get out of it and get rewarded. Sailing isn’t just what you do on the water. Good preparation and having the right kit make a difference. WHAT ARE YOUR TOP TIPS TO OTHER YOUNG SAILORS PROGRESSING THROUGH THE YOUTH AND JUNIOR RANKS THAT ASPIRE TO ACHIEVE WHAT YOU HAVE? My top tip is to learn to believe in your thoughts and follow your gut. I often found that sometimes, despite my coaches and prerace preparation pulling me to one side of the course, something inside wanted me to go the other way. Sometimes you just have to follow your gut and believe in yourself. This often worked out for me. And of course - just keep it fun.

SUSTAINABILITY INNOVATIONS IN THE VOLVO OCEAN RACE In the middle of 2017, Musto unveiled its new Official Volvo Ocean Race Merchandise Collection, using imagery captured in partnership with Vestas 11th Hour Racing and leading team members Charlie Enright and Mark Towill. The release of the new range marked a major milestone for the Musto business, as the brand continues to make major innovations to drive greater sustainability in its global business operations.

WE ARE EXCITED TO PARTNER “WITH THE VOLVO OCEAN RACE

IN PRODUCING THE MOST INNOVATIVE AND SUSTAINABLE COLLECTION TO DATE

Vestas 11th Hour Racing challenged Musto to reduce the environmental impact of the plastic packaging used to deliver its garments. As a result, Musto committed itself to exploring ways of making savings without jeopardising the quality of goods that customers receive. Working with Vestas 11th Hour Racing and the sustainability team at the Volvo Ocean Race, Musto identified that ‘pre-consumer waste’ was an area in which efficiencies could be made. This is waste generated in a manufacturing plant through the production of carrier bags, such as punch-out holes and trimmings from measuring out the plastic. This is normally sent to waste, but after thorough investigation, it was found that this plastic could be used as part of garment bags for delivery.

34 |

This now means all Musto garment bags are 100% recyclable and are made from 30% recycled material. In addition, and after an extensive feasibility study, the manufacturing team also discovered that by adding a single fold to the garment delivery bags, the size could be reduced by 40% without any impact on product quality. These two initiatives will reduce the weight of plastic used in the manufacturing, packaging and delivery of Musto goods by 70%. Musto has promised to go on making packaging innovations on all product ranges in 2018. This will save 11 tons of plastic a year: the equivalent of over 61,000 plastic bottles. When announcing this major milestone, Petra Carran, Head of Marketing at Musto commented,

“We are excited to partner with the Volvo Ocean Race in producing the most innovative and sustainable collection to date and hope our range will help raise awareness of ocean health. We are proud of the sustainability innovations we have made in the past six months and remain committed to this area in the future.” Mark Turner, CEO of the Volvo Ocean Race and a huge champion for sustainability said, “Volvo Ocean Race has always been the ultimate test of a team in professional sport. Teaming up with Musto to make these changes against another huge test, plastic pollution, shows our commitment to sustainability and our programme to help ‘Turn the Tide on Plastic’.”

OVER 5 TRILLION PIECES OF PLASTIC CURRENTLY LITTER THE OCEAN The Ocean Cleanup estimates that over 5 trillion pieces of plastic currently litter the ocean. Plastic and rubbish collect in five ocean garbage patches, the largest one being the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, located between Hawaii and California. This plastic impacts our ecosystems, health and economies. Resolving it requires a combination of closing the sources and cleaning up what has already accumulated in the ocean.

plastic into an artificial coastline where it can be collected and recycled. The Ocean Cleanup is currently trialling a 100-meter long barrier in the harsh conditions of the North Sea, allowing them to check that it can withstand its severe environment before attempting to use it in the planned clean-up of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. It is estimated that full-scale deployment of this system will clear 50% of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in 5 years.

Spurred on by this vast pollution and its destructive effect on the ecosystem, this organisation has embarked on the largest cleanup in history. Their ambitious objective has resulted in the development of advanced technologies: passive systems that use the ocean currents to funnel

To assist their engineers in assessing the functionality of the barrier, Musto has supplied them with its most resilient kit, to ensure they are fully-protected in inhospitable North Sea conditions.

MID-LAYER

Combine base-layers and mid-layers to form an effective barrier between you and the elements. The two layers work in tandem with the breathable, waterproof outer layer, allowing sweat to escape but keeping salt-water out. The mid-layer builds on the temperature regulation provided by the base. Its main purpose is to insulate; trapping dry, warm air and holding it close to the body.

BASE LAYER

MIDDLE LAYER

OUTER LAYER

As the layer closest to your skin, a base layer must wick moisture away to minimise heat loss. It also needs to provide enough ventilation for you to remain comfortable during periods of exertion out on the seas.

The mid layer builds on the temperature regulation provided by the base. Its main purpose is to insulate; trapping dry, warm air and holding it close to the body.

From torrential rain to icy waves, you’re at the mercy of the elements when you’re sailing. An outer layer is your primary defence against the weather.

Your environment and the type of activity you are engaged in are two of the key factors that will inform your layering choices. If you are a VOR racer for example, you may find yourself requiring every layer from base to outer. However, on a leisurely sail aroun d the marina on a fair day, a base layer would suffice, perhaps with a mid-layer over the top in case the temperature drops. It’s always wise to understand the importance of your base layer - there is a misconception in the sailing world that a run-of-the-mill t-shirt can make a good base. However, a standard cotton t-shirt does not have odour control properties, UPF protection, it isn’t fast-drying nor does it have sweat-wicking properties. When highly active, cotton sticks to

your skin and increases in weight when wet. Your base layer is synonymous to comfort, so understanding them is incredibly important, especially when spending long periods of time on a boat. No two base layers are the same – their design and the fabrics qualities have been chosen according to their purpose. For example, if you are going to be highly active in very cold conditions for long periods of time you would be best suited to wearing an active base layer. These garments are body mapped to help regulate body temperature, they have antibacterial NILIT body fresh technology to minimise body odour and the seamless construction eliminates chaffing. On the other end of the scale if you are highly active in hot conditions

5 TIPS FOR CHOOSING A MID/BASE-LAYER

38 |

Your environment influences your attire - this should never be truer than when you’re out at sea. A 3-Layer System is the most effective way to ensure insulation and protection against the elements, while maintaining the freedom of movement you need to perform. Pioneered by Musto, this system has since become the standard for the global sailing market as a result of its efficient thermoregulatory properties. Working on the premise that water transmits heat up to thirty times faster than air, the key principle behind our system is to keep the body as dry as possible.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK every activity has different demands CHECK THE PERFORMANCE of a fabric fulfil of the garment vs your needs

and are likely to meet spray from the water, you would be better suited to a quick-dry base layer. These garments provide UPF protection, offer 4-way stretch and are sweat-wicking and fastdrying. The seams are also welded to eliminate chaffing. A good mid-layer should offer breathability and warmth depending on your level and type of activity. Sailors, such as VOR sailors, who are out at sea in changeable and extreme weather conditions should look for GORE-TEX® in their mid-layers, as well as fleece linings. If sailing in fair weather, opt for a thermal fleece mid that also has a DWR finish for additional protection against the elements.

BASE-LAYER

Choosing the correct base-layer for the climate and level of activity you face will make a world of difference to your comfort on the water. As the layer closest to your skin, a base-layer is the foundation of the 3-layer system and must wick moisture away to minimise heat loss. It also needs to provide enough ventilation for you to remain comfortable during periods of exertion out on the seas.

MUSTO BASE LAYER EXPLAINED

Considoring your environment is essential to your comfort on the water. Paired with a breathable mid layer and outer layer, the base layer is the foundation of the 3-Layer System. Choose the right layers for the climate and your level of activity to keep dry, comfortable and maintain your optimum core temperature so you can spend longer on the water.

THERMAL BASELAYER

ACTIVE BASELAYER

Wear this base layer for thermal insulation during medium energy activities in freezing conditions. Lightweight and ergonomically fitted, it is streamlined under your layers. The fast wicking, low absorption fabric keeps you dry and comfortable as you exert energy. Stay warm in this thermal base layer that regulates your temperature on winter adventures.

Wear this base layer for high-energy activities in cold to freezing temperatures. Wicking fabric technology keeps you dry and body mapped variable knits regulate your temperature. The stretch fabric gives you complete freedom of movement while different knits reduce the risk of injury by supporting muscles and joints. Antibacterial NILIT® BodyFresh technology minimises odour to keep you fresh during periods of exersion.

MERINO BASELAYER

QUICK DRY BASELAYER

Wear this base layer for high-energy outdoor adventure in freezing to mild climates. Merino wool is the pinnacle of natural fibres for active wear - moisture and temperature regulating, naturally anti-bacterial for odour-resistance and incredibly soft too. You can wear it for days without it smelling. Unique wool fibres wick moisture away from the body to keep you dry and comfortable, trap vital warmth in cold climates and regulate your temperature as you heat up with exertion.

Wear this base layer in hot climates in low to high-energy activity. It provides UPF40 protection from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Stay dry and comfortable with the wicking and fast drying fabric that has 4-way stretch for complete freedom of movement. Welded and flatlocked seams and super lightweight, silk touch fabric make this base layer barely felt against your skin.

Musto understands how athletes wear their garments. They need insulation when temperatures plummet combined with the flexibility to cool down and stay dry when active. Inspired by this need for versatility, key Musto Evolution styles have been adapted and geared towards interconnectivity. The addition of loops in hoods and cuffs allow outer shells and insulating mid layers to be combined together in a completely customised formation. So choose your shell, choose your insulation. DYNAMIC FIT

“Not the obvious choice, recruiting a swimming champion to help keep your clients’ feet dry... but it all seems to have worked out rather well” Chris McGrath feels like he has landed on his feet at Musto. He has been tasked with elevating Musto’s footwear range to a new level of technical performance, and finds himself in his element. “Working closely with athletes at the top of their game, taking feedback from professional sailors at the top of their game, passionate people like Ian Walker and Pete Cumming, and trying to solve the challenges of creating what they want in order to perform at a higher level that’s the stuff that I love.” In his youth, McGrath was an athlete in his own right, winning a bronze medal for Great Britain in the Open Water Swimming World Championships back in 1994. But since then he has forged a career with an enviable CV in the global sporting arena. “I started out working at the McLaren Formula One team for three years, working in 3D design creating gloves, helmets and so on. That’s when I really started to work closely with athletes, listening carefully to what they want. Often you find sports people are frustrated designers; they have some amazing ideas, but you’re the link between that creative spark and making it a reality.”

62 |

Since McLaren, McGrath has worked at Speedo, Nike, Puma and Clarks. It was while working as the head of design at Clarks Shoes that he first came across Musto. “I already knew the brand pretty well because of my wife’s involvement in the equestrian world,” says McGrath, “but we were doing a collaboration with Musto in the lead up to the London 2012 Games. That’s when I realised the potential of the wider sailing world and the power of the Musto brand in particular, for creating top-performance products that the best sailors in the world want to wear.” The past year has seen McGrath and his design team working hard on the latest footwear which now appears in the 2017 catalogue.

GORE-TEX® OCEAN RACER BOOT The GORE-TEX® Ocean Racer Boot comes from McGrath’s in-depth conversations with Ian Walker MBE and other members of the Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing crew who convincingly

won the last Volvo Ocean Race in 2014/15. “We listened hard to what worked well, and what could have been done better,” says McGrath. Much of the new boot is an evolution from Musto’s long history of ocean-racing footwear but nearly every element has been upgraded and improved in some way. The GORE-TEX® membrane makes the boot waterproof and breathable so your feet stay completely dry. Feedback from bowmen - who frequently work in a firehose of fast-moving white water while kneeling on the deck - told McGrath that the previous system needed improving as water could seep in through the back of the boot as they were crouched on the deck. So now an adjustable gaiter minimises water getting in through the top of the boot and XPL drainage expels any water out at the ankle to prevent pooling. Testing is what takes the time, it’s the most important thing we do,” says McGrath. “I want the guys to wear these things to death, to really tear them apart so that we can make them better, strong and build more longevity in the material. Sometimes the sailors will come back with some great ideas

The Dynamic Fit Gilly cords and lacing system close around your foot to lock it in place. It prevents sliding inside the shoe to give you incredible stability and a sure stance.

CLOSED CELL TECHNOLOGY

The molecular structure of the mixed rubber compound used in the heel prevents microbial growth for odourfree performance and an easy clean surface.

from other products that they think might work elsewhere. For example on the new Ocean Racer Boot, the CORDURA® fabric on the gaiter is the exact same material as you’ll find on the seat and knee patches on HPX salopette, and that brainwave came directly from the sailors’ feedback from the last Volvo Ocean Race.” A lot of work has gone into reducing weight in this boot. “Rubber is pretty bomb-proof and it’s unbeatable with regards to water penetration. But it’s also very heavy, and not the most nimble product. So now we have a mid-sole and an outer-sole. The mid-sole is very light, taken from running shoe technology, and it provides underfoot protection which minimises vibrations

through the bottom of the shoe. An impactresistant EVA foam midsole and footbed absorbs shock for comfort and repels the cold transmitted from the deck to prevent rapid heat loss in cold water conditions such as in the Southern Ocean. It also means we can minimise the amount of rubber used on the outer sole and really strip unnecessary weight out of it.” The design team developed a new GripFlex sole pattern which is mathematically engineered for 360° grip and traction. Combined with Musto’s GripDeck sticky rubber sole, this is the most versatile and reliable grip yet. “The sailors want great grip in all directions, for it to be comfortable, protective and as lightweight as possible. When they’re trying to operate in 30 foot swells, they want to be able to move around easily and not feel like they’re planted on the deck with massive, clunky boots.” “Also helping to minimise bulk is an adjustable gaiter, which means you can get in and out of the boot easily, making it a better fit for different calf sizes. The gaiter incorporates scratch rubber which is well proven in the climbing world, and provides great durability and grip. The adjustability of the gaiter makes it easier for putting on salopettes over the boots and generally reduces bulk below the knee,” says McGrath. “The more dynamic the user feels, the more they’re integrating with their product, the less encumbered and more mobile they’ll feel.” Once the boots are on, there is a bungee lacing system that locks your foot in place to give you the best possible support and stability.

DYNAMIC PRO II Among the many innovations on the Dynamic Pro II, solving “stinky shoe syndrome” was one of the biggest challenges. “Getting rid of the smell is really difficult,” says McGrath. “You can

treat shoes and garments, but unless the treatment is impregnated it will wear off. Part of the solution comes in making the shoe as quick drying as possible. The holes in the outsoles generate airflow and improve drying times, as does the monoconstruction of the Dynamic Pro II. With the DP1 there were three layers of mesh but they weren’t bonded together. This meant bacteria could hang on to more surface area. So for the DP2 we have welded those three layers together, which helps reduce the possibility of bacteria hanging around and makes it a more compact piece of footwear.” Like the GORE-TEX® Ocean Racer Boot, the DP II incorporates the same GripFlex sole pattern which flexes and contours to the contact zone for 360° grip and traction. McGrath says it has been designed to operate well in transition zones between two different types of surface, for example where a GRP surface or carbon-fibre decking meets an area of trampoline netting. Pete Cumming’s experience aboard all kinds of fast multihulls such as MOD70s and foiling GC32s has been invaluable in developing a close-fitting, lightweight deck shoe that works in a variety of conditions and environments. “What’s great about this industry compared to others footwear industries, is that these guys are sailing all year round, so you’re getting feedback all the time. We’ve got a great pool of guys who are really keen to use the kit and tell us what they would like. There’s a huge amount of trust in the Musto brand, and we’re lucky to have a loyal base of athletes that really believe in the brand and the product. For me, while I’ve worked for some of the biggest names in the sports industry, this is a real career highlight, to be working so closely with guys like Pete and Ian - creating products that they’re going to love using in the toughest of environments.”

WHAT IS ® GORE-TEX FABRIC? GORE-TEX® fabrics are created by bonding a fully waterproof GORE-TEX® membrane between high-performance textiles. The result is a fabric that offers a combination of high levels of breathability and total waterproof protection.

The GORE-TEX® membrane is the heart of all the GORE-TEX® products. Completely wind and waterproof, the membrane is also permeable to allow water vapour from the skin to escape with ease. The result: water from the outside will never penetrate. Cold winds cannot pass through. And perspiration can escape easily. Dryness and comfort are assured in GORE-TEX® products.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

WATERPROOF

A GORE-TEX® membrane is comprised of microscopic pores 20 times smaller than a drop of water, which prevents water passing through.

BREATHABLE

Pores in the GORE-TEX® membrane are 700 times bigger than a water vapour molecule, allowing water vapour to easily pass through the membrane, keeping you dry and comfortable.

ABOUT MUSTO CORPORATE Continued performance and a professional finish are essential when part of a team or crew. The Musto Corporate Team provide high quality uniforms, crew gear, team kit and customised clothing to ensure you achieve both. Apply anything from the name of a boat to an internationally-recognised brand logo, onto Musto clothing.

WINDPROOF

The GORE-TEX® membrane has been engineered to be durably windproof. It blocks wind chill that can lower the temperature of your core while allowing your skin to breathe.

84 |

DURABLE

Other fabrics weaken with wear or washing. GORE-TEX® fabrics are designed to withstand the rigours of both to maintain performance across the useful life of the product.

Embroidery remains a durable technique when applying customised touches to a garment while ensuring fine, eye-catching levels of detail. While the vast majority of customisation is embroidered, Musto also uses other specialist techniques when applying logos and lettering, such as patching and heat taping. And by keeping its services in-house, Musto can offer exceptional delivery times and a consistently high quality finish.
