DENMARK AS A CREATIVE SUPERPOWER THE THEME OF AARHUS SYMPOSIUM FOCUS 2019
Denmark ranks among the topmost creative nations in the world. We have a rich history within areas such as design, architecture, and entrepreneurship. In a world of constant technological development and fierce competition, creative thinking is key for individuals, businesses, and even entire countries. To keep prospering from our creativity, it is crucial that we act on the opportunities at hand. As creativity becomes increasingly important, the labour market of tomorrow will demand people with creative minds and skill sets to a greater extent than ever before. Hence, it could prove paramount to master innovative traits to meet the demand for creativity in future work. But what specific competencies must individuals and organisations focus on to remain competitive? Is creative thinking an innate ability, or can we acquire this quality throughout our lives? For creativity to become a value driver, organisations must find themselves in an environment that encourages innovation. One example is through the exchange of ideas between universities and businesses, which could have synergistic effects on idea generation and value creation. Should the government intervene through education and subsidies targeted at the creative industries? Or should it adopt a more passive role for achieving a long-term creative advantage? At Aarhus Symposium Focus 2019, we invite you to join the discussion of Denmark as a creative hub. How can workers, organisations, and policymakers of today use creativity to thrive in the business world of tomorrow? How can we consolidate Denmark’s position as a creative superpower?

INFOGRAPHICS
According to the Global Creativity Index (GCI), Denmark consistently ranks among the most creative nations in the world, ranking 5th in 2015. The GCI ranks countries according to their overall measure of creativity This assessment is largely based on a country’s 3Ts - technology, talent, and tolerance or openness to minorities.
The Danish creative sector is defined by industries such as media, entertainment, fashion, design, and architecture. Around 145,000 people are employed in these industries.
In 2017, The Danish Chamber of Commerce layed out 23 private and politically advisory propositions in order to increase growth in the creative industries. In 2016, the creative industries reached revenues of 327 billion DKK or approximately 8,3% of total private sector revenues in that year.

QUESTIONS FOR THE SPEAKERS HOW CAN A SMALL NATION LIKE DENMARK USE CREATIVITY AS A COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE?
12
LENE TANGGAARD
BO LINNEMANN
As a small country without plenty of natural resources, we have always had to be on the frontier of new thinking, and our rich craftwork and design tradition are a major competitive advantage. To continue using creativity as an advantage, we need to explore resources for collaboration, quick interchange of knowledge, learning across sectors, and thinking along the edge of the box.
We live in a time where you no longer can claim a position. You have to earn it. In Denmark we have got a room for the free spirit and thinking. But we need to demonstrate this to the world not just tell it.
ELISABETTA LAZZARO
BETINA HAGERUP
A small nation like Denmark should focus on strategic and already strong creative sectors (e.g. design and architecture), develop synergies between creative and other sectors for wider innovation, and network with other complementary countries, in particular in the EU.
Creative products, methods and services from Denmark are world-class. They win international awards and enjoy great popularity all over the world. The creative industries are not just an important and indispensable part of the Danish economy. They also contribute to value creation in other industries.

HOW IMPORTANT IS CREATIVITY TO INDIVIDUALS, BUSINESSES, AND COUNTRIES?
WHAT SHOULD THE GOVERNMENT DO – IF ANYTHING – TO ENCOURAGE INNOVATION? LENE TANGGAARD
BO LINNEMANN
Denmark is consistently placed in the top five in various competitions and rankings over the years concerning approaches to fuelling creativity and innovation. The courage of Government to invest in creativity, to support new experiments, and to allow for a high degree of agency among professionals and civic society is of utmost importance.
We know from experience that it boosts impact if you physically gather academic education, R&D, and commercial creative businesses. Let us rethink how we develop and stimulate creative and innovative industries by pairing these learning environments.
ELISABETTA LAZZARO
BETINA HAGERUP
The government could have both an active and a more “passive” role. The former includes funding and regulation, the latter includes a softer public presence allowing for more entrepreneurial initiative and encouragement of innovation.
Two things are important for the Danish government to focus on if we are going to keep up with the global competition on developing new innovative solutions. First of all, the government needs to make sure that research from Danish universities gets stronger linkages to Danish businesses, so new technologies can be used in innovative business solutions. Secondly, the government needs to focus on strengthening conditions for entrepreneurs. This includes access to finance and better possibilities to hire international talent. AARHUS SYMPOSIUM
