Courtyard housing Spring 2014
entrance from street This thesis proposes a high-density low-rise courtyard housing scheme on a vacant city block in New Orleans. This new planning prototype has urban characteristics such as communal walls, buildings pushed to the street edge and an open interior block. This courtyard development increases density and community through the vehicle of the
courtyard house. The court-dwellings repititive framework forms a courtyard cluster for greater density without sacriďŹ cing openness. The private domain of the court-dwellings is organized around a public inner core with communal facilities. This new block prototype introduces a pattern of open and closed space for density, privacy and community.

Adaptive reuse Spring 2013
view from intersection This adaptive reuse project strives to create energy and activity along commercially bound Franklin Avenue while celebrating the industrial character of the building. Located in historic Faubourg Marigny, the building is poised to embrace future redevelopment on adjacent properties. The program necessitates accessibility and transparency for the brewery
but requires privacy for the housing units. Therefore, the existing structure’s form and building skin are manipulated to adapt the new program. The buildings large but whimsical trusses are highlighted and the existing metal skin is articulated to express the industrial nature of the site. This proposal was recieved positively by Marigny residents.

Project Type: Date:
Mixed - Use Fall 2012
This project proposes to revitalize a once thriving commercial corridor in Central City, New Orleans with the establishment of a mixed-use commercial center. The building will act as an amenity for neighboring residents and others in the area. The first building phase will include a cafe with an associated courtyard, retail space, and two residential
units. The facade strategy visually links disparate programs and provides a transparent street front for pedestrian traffic. In the eigth year of Tulane’s URBANbuild program, this project takes on a larger scale and subsequently has a greater urban impact. Project team: Aaron Schenker and URBANbuild 08 Studio with Harmony Neighborhood Development.

Project Type: Date:
Institutional Fall 2013
This university building is located between institutional, industrial and residential building scales and is gainfully situated along a major pedestrian corridor used for campus access. The program necessitates a separation of its featured elements, the gallery and auditorium, from traditional classrooms and university office spaces. The gallery’s scale
and orientation welcome pedestrian traffic and allow for abundant northern light within the gallery. The remaining program is housed in an L-shaped mass on the perimeter of the gallery. The massing respects the scale of the neighboring industrial plant and creates a change in scale announcing the shift from residential to institutional building scales.

YOGA RETREAT Location:

Project Type: Date:
Yoga Retreat Spring 2011
The Yoga Retreat building is sensitive to climate conditions and the spirituality of yoga. The connection between mind, body and nature. The monolithic mass of the building emerges from the hill and out into the landscape. The building is divided between daily activity and the yoga space by a threshold wall. The daily activity components are within
the earth and the yoga space is elevated, oating above the hill. The building is composed of concrete, wood and glass. This material palette contributes to an interior sensory experience and reinforces the building buried into the hillside. The glazed yoga space is a departure from the mass of the hill into lightness with panoramic views of the hill and Jordan Pond.

Project Type: Date:
Public Library Fall 2011
The French Quarter Public Library deals with a dense program and a unique urban site. The library is located in the historic French Quarter district of New Orleans and the site is L-shaped touching two street fronts. I introduced a deep fold in the urban streetscape to draw in pedestrian traďŹƒc. The program components surrounding the folded space are
attractive to pedestrians and are functional when the main library is closed. These programmatic components, such as a cafe and auditorium, will light the courtyard at night. The form of the library was inspired by the original plan of a French Quarter city block. The resultant building form is more publicly orientated and attractive to pedestrians.
