Core Connections Atlantic City, NJ
This proposal explores the use of hybrid space and mixed-use programming to cultivate an active civic center for a dying city. The project functions as an urban community composed of four major perimeter structures: an art school, performing arts center, residence, and a hotel. The large open space between the structures include a market, multi-functional recreational facilities, and open gathering spaces; it serves as a cultural axis. This project provides visibility and encourages mixed use by both the residents of Atlantic City and the 30 million tourists that visit per year. New structures puncture existing buildings, parking garages and casinos, allowing greater accessibility and fluidity between these previously underutilized places. The aspiration of this project is to reach out, connect, and pull local residents and tourists from afar to a newly redefined city center, forging connections between people and place. This project was conceptually developed through strong iterations of plan and physical modeling. Inspiration was drawn from the kinetic energy of the site and the physical contortion of the human body while in the act of skiing. In plan, circulation carves, glides, and shifts through space just as an occupant had preformed only moments ago on the steep mountain runs. The volumes of the building, though static, appear to lean, shift, and balance. A large atrium is used for gathering and passing through to start and end one’s day on the slopes of Cherry Mountain. Circulation for the public and private sectors provide occupants a journey through the eroded canyons of the building. Leaning and shifting walls allows new perspectives down corridors or back to the sizeable atrium. Windows frame glimpses of the activities and kinetic energy of the mountain, stream, and swaying trees. The built structure emerges from topography to welcome guests, but also acts as a remnant of the powers that exist on the site. Collaboration with: Casey Copier - UofU M.Arch 2014
Humayun’s Tomb Interpretive Center New Delhi, India
Situated along the edge of an axial procession, this public courtyard, flanked by two thickened walls, provides the entry sequence to one of India’s most celebrated tombs: Humayun’s Tomb. Currently being developed in my comprehensive studio, this scheme focuses on lighting strategies, formal decisions, and material choices that mitigate thermal gain. New Delhi’s climate, humid with intense solar radiation, has developed a culture and architecture that exists between dark shadows and brilliant light. The intentions of this project are to carefully understand a balance between lightness and darkness, delicacy and permanence, and tradition and contemporary architectural approaches. It is also critical to develop an understand of what local materials are used in the region and how crafts people construct with them.

Just as a dessert animal takes shelter in the earth from the harshness of the sun, so do the occupants of this community. Buried in the earth, this project was driven by sectional qualities of light and strategic detailing of enclosure. The ground plane lifted upward reveals subterranean habitation and life. Volumes below, shielded by layers of semitransparent glass and overhangs only suggest shadowy figures from the exterior. Veiled from the sun, classrooms, the cafĂŠ, and the reading spaces evoke a sanctuary that this land has provided for the people of Guadalupe and the Yaqui Tribe. The knowledge and legacy of the community is allowed, once again, to connect with and be anchored to the land. The intensity of the sun drove the placement of the program and allowed opportunities and unique means of using reflected light. The angle and height of roof plates maximizes lighting conditions, frame views of the performance stage and affords a multifunctional event space above. As the sun sets and air cools, the community emerges from the building to the roof and gathers to celebrate another cycle of the sun and moon.

This project provided an opportunity to work on a more intimate level of detail and material use. The prompt of this exploration was to construct and resolve the building only using a single material. Crafting steel for lighting elements, railings, stairs, and partitions demanded a close examination of joinery and separation of part. The ability for steel to be formed into a range of geometries became critical to regulation the construction sequence and gradient of light qualities within the project. Utilizing industrial modules of steel, in plate and tube form, the construction becomes efficient on material and economically effective. Orientation and scale of steel members also provided a great variety of acoustical, optical and lighting opportunities.

The agenda of this project is to organize the arrival of the Camino de Santiago de Compostella pilgrims as they approach the Casa Cova (Jesuit House). The site is characterized by a dramatic topographical change from the river, located on the Southeast edge, to the hilltop, that is nearly 50 meters higher in elevation. This project, part of a cross disciplinary studio, focused on design thinking through Landscape Architecture, Architecture and Urban Planning strategies. In order to organize the arrival of pilgrims, 500 per day in peak season, I viewed the site as a system of flows; Flow of people, flow of monument connections, flow if planted forms, and flow of drainage. Flows are organized and held on the site by three grids. The primary grid is created by the access of the bridge and the south façade of the Cova; and two secondary grids are formed by St. Marco’s chapel (on site) and the existing terraced conditions. Programmed spaces are placed on the primary grid, while the program entries and vegetation are planted on secondary grids to inform circulation of plazas and walkways.

Fabrication Work Fabricated pieces are completed at full scale to understand material quality, production techniques and assembly time required. Moldings and formwork for masonry pieces are reusable and capable of reproducing the module several times. CNC projects serve as screening experiments for manipulating light quality and transparencies.
