hether you’re waiting in line at the bank, driving to work, or going to the gym for the nth time, boredom can easily set in and make the task at hand seemingly unbearable. Keep boredom at bay, and your mind and your body alert with these five tips. Mix it up. One of your worst workout enemies is boredom—just the thought of running on a treadmill for the third time in a week could be enough to keep you from going to the gym at all! Vary your workout by either changing your exercise routine or your surroundings. Instead of running for thirty minutes on the treadmill, for example, try attending a yoga class or going boxing. Or you could also try jogging outdoors instead of in front of a television.

Do the cube. Remember those cubes with differentcolored squares that were all the rage back in the 1980s? If you’re a geometry person, then this colored cube might just be for you. Called the Rubik’s Cube after its inventor, Enro Rubik, this toy is enjoying a revival of sorts—look around at a mall and you’re bound to see someone with this cube in his or her hands. The objective is to get all the same-colored squares onto one side of the cube with a series of twists. Far from being a random game, the world’s best-selling toy requires a strategy and a bit of memory work for you to complete the puzzle—a great way to flex your brain muscle! (Get more info on the Rubik’s Cube at www.rubiks.com.)
Play the name game. If you’ve got no space to stash a Rubik’s cube, then use your brain to keep you entertained. Try enumerating places for every letter of your name—start with one place for every letter (e.g., CHRIS: China, Hawaii, Rome, India, Spain), then work your way up to three or more places. Before you know it, you’ll be at the front of the line. Go exploring. Are you tired of taking the same old route to work? Does your attention seem to lapse as you mindlessly go about your daily commute? Shake up your daily drive to work by passing different roads. The challenge of figuring out a new route plus the stimulation you get from seeing new places would be enough to get you out of auto-pilot mode. Book it. Buy or borrow a handy book or magazine that you could take with you wherever you go. Find one that’s as compact as possible so that you won’t feel like it’s such a hassle to pack it in your bag. Whenever you find yourself waiting in line—at the bank, at the fast-food joint, etc.—simply whip it out and read! Waiting in line thus becomes a productive, rather than mind-numbing, exercise!
If you’re feeling fatigued by just doing your normal daily activities, it’s time to take a break from your busy life. There’s a fine line between mere tiredness and fatigue. “Tiredness goes away after adequate sleep or rest while fatigue is persistent daily lack of energy that impairs your ability to function normally” claims Dr. Susmita Parashar of Emory School of Medicine in Atlanta. Look for signs of fatigue. Fatigue can be excess baggage especially at work so act on it while you still can. If you’re experiencing fatigue, go for a regular and low-intensity workout such as going on a regular leisurely walk. Based on a study conducted by University of Goergia, sedentary fatigued people can increase their energy level by 20% and decrease their fatigue by 65% by just doing regular and low-intensity exercises. Don’t overwork your body! You can also do acupuncture, meditation, and breathing exercises regularly instead of a moderate or high-intensity workout. Make sure that you get adequate sleep as well to get you back on track! June 2008

So you’re back in your favorite coffee shop to cook up an excellent creative idea for your business or just to pass the time. Instead of ordering your usual coffee drink or usual concoction, go for healthier alternatives as much as you can such as skimmed milk, yogurt drinks, and fresh fruit shakes or juices, which are normally available in most coffee shops. If you’re spending big time, might as well spend well. Making healthy choices once in a while can make a big difference in your life!

Sluggishness is a result of boredom. If you find yourself glued to the couch, constantly switching channels, and pigging out, then you’re guilty! Sometimes it’s good to be bored, but most of the time it’s not. For sluggish days, force yourself to treat yourself out! Some exciting to do’s would be biking to get that natural high (if you want to advance your biking skills you can take the bike trail in Filinvest Alabang) or take it slow: Pack up and pick a comfy spot in the park for a picnic trip—a good place would be the all-time favorite Picnic Grove, Tagaytay, where you can enjoy the view and some peace and quiet.

“Diet” has become an undesirable word, associated with deprivation and—in extreme cases—starvation. But it shouldn’t be so. A proper diet is, in fact, a lifestyle. It’s something that you should be able to do for life. You can’t give up carbs forever, can you? You may like your new, svelte self after a month without rice—but once you start adding those starches to your meals again, you can watch as the pounds pile on. The key, as with most everything in life, is moderation. Use your common sense and a bit of discipline, and you’ll be able to lose those extra pounds for good— without giving up the good stuff! A few do’s and don’ts of dieting the right way:
Eat Smart. Every meal presents you with alternatives. You just have to train yourself to choose the better, smarter one. Craving for a burger? Get the no-frills version, which has about half the calories of a bacon cheeseburger. Can’t give up pizza? Have two slices of a thin-crust pie instead of a thick-crust one. Ordering pasta? Opt for the one with an olive-oil-based sauce instead of calorie-laden carbonara. For more smart food choices, head to the nearest bookstore and grab a copy of Eat This Not That: Thousands of Simple Food Swaps That Can Save You 10, 20, 30 Pounds-or More!, written by David Zinczenko, US Men’s Health editor-in-chief.

Treat yourself. One of the biggest mistakes people make is that they cut their favorite food out of their diet completely. Quitting chocolate cold turkey could only lead to a monumental Snickers binge two weeks into the diet. You can treat yourself to a bit of chocolate—just don’t overindulge. Savor a small bar, instead of wolfing down a king-size bar of Crunch. Determine your triggers. If you eat because you’re stressed, or feel like you “deserve it after a bad day,” then you may be an emotional eater. Next time you have a rough day at work, don’t reach for a bag of Doritos to comfort you—find other activities to relieve the stress. Reading is an option, while running, boxing, and yoga can all help you clear your mind. The bonus? You end up burning calories instead of consuming them!
Skip breakfast. There’s a long list of reasons not to skip breakfast, one of which is that it slows down your metabolism, which in the long run, will make it harder for you to lose weight. You may also convince yourself that you saved on the calories by skipping a meal anyway, so you may end up overeating later in the day. So have some oatmeal and a piece of fruit before you head out the door! Shop on an empty stomach. Heading to the supermarket? Have a light snack. Grocery shopping while you’re hungry can lead you to fill your cart with a bunch of things
you’re craving for at that moment. Shop without the hunger pangs, and you’ll keep yourself from filling your pantry with junk. Guzzle your calories. Don’t waste your calorie intake on drinks that won’t even make you feel full. Instead of having a glass of soda or iced tea with every meal, opt for zero-cal water. On a night out with your buddies, have a glass of water in between glasses of the hard stuff— this cuts your calorie intake in half. Bonus: The water hydrates you and will keep you from waking up with a nasty hangover!
Keeping your energy up all day long especially during days when you need both your physical and mental strength is hard. Energy is a necessity nowadays. Without it, it’s hard to do everything with speed, accuracy, and precision. If you need that much energy to perform, then it’s time to take some supplements like Ensure. Ensure is a convenient nutrient-enriched supplement—it provides COMPLETE BALANCED NUTRITION. It has protein, carbohydrates, fiber, vitamin C, vitamin D, iron and calcium to meet your everyday nutritional requirements all in one glass. It is beefed up with antioxidants and low in saturated fat and cholesterol. And it comes in two delicious flavors too: vanilla and chocolate. Drink Ensure everyday!

here are millions of ways to battle boredom, but if you’re looking for something to do that can fill up your pockets at the same time then the internet can be your new best friend. Here are two sites to enjoy: www.eBay.com There are a lot of good finds on Ebay such as signature apparel, shoes and accessories, collectibles, second-hand equipment, and other awesome items that you don’t normally find in market stalls. You can normally buy them cheap too on Ebay. Ebay-ing is like treasure hunting! Sometimes, other people’s trash or excess can be other people’s fortune. Through Ebay, you can do buy and sell, for example, you can buy a Disney CARS collectible and refurbish it or redesign it and sell it again at a higher price. You can also buy some second hand Nike watches and sell them here in the Philippines at a much higher price than your buying price. Just a warning, Ebay-ing can be highly addictive; just make sure that you make the right bids. www.lulu.com If you love writing, photography, music creation and graphic design, then showcase your stuff in www.lulu.com. Lulu.com is a free publishing website where you can have your work published for free and people around the globe can buy it. Lulu.com can help you with the computation of your selling price based on the specs of your piece (i.e., book size, number of pages, etc.). It’s hassle free! No need to find a publisher nor an editor; just lay it out just the way you like it.

Brain Teasers 1. This image is an optical illusion. If your eyes focus on the left side of the image, you might see four shelves. If you focus on the right side of the image, you might see three shelves. Our brains identify & store images that we are accustomed to, that is why looking at illusions like this may confuse us before realzing that there is something wrong with the picture.
