Having a child is one of the best things that will happen in your life, however, the entire experience becomes slightly more complicated if you already have a young toddler at home. Adding a new baby to the family can be stressful for young children, so you have to handle the transition gracefully. These are the four things you must do when introducing a new baby into the family. Tell Them What’s Happening Some kids are going to realize fairly quickly that you have a baby in your stomach, but it will not be so obvious to other kids. Make sure your toddler knows exactly what is about to happen. This gives them time to adjust to the new baby before it arrives. Let them see the baby getting bigger in the
ultrasound pictures. It is also a good idea to let them regularly touch your belly and talk to their future sibling. Make Physical Changes Early If you do not have a lot of room, then you will likely have to make some physical changes to the house to get ready for the second child. If the kids are going to share a room, then install the crib as early as possible. This will give your toddler time to adjust before things getting a little crazy around the house. You will also want to explain why the changes are being made. Give a Sibling Gift A great way to create a bond between your oldest child and the new baby is through a sibling gift. Tell your toddler that the gift came directly from their baby brother or sister. This helps them see the baby as a loving person. There is no need to get extravagant with the gift. It can be something as simple as a small toy or book. Continue to Give Attention A new baby obviously requires a lot of care, but you need to make sure you still give plenty of attention to your other child. If they see the new baby getting all of the attention, then they will feel like they are being replaced. Once one parent gets up to tend to the baby, the other parent should start doing something fun with the older child.
