blip _ digital compass

blip was a 12 week long project where we were exploring what the future of play might look like. As a level two project, it was a good way to get our feet wet in the earlier phases of the design process.

Memory, value, and play.

In hopes of getting a good sense of meaingful moments of play in peoples lives, and how that might change in the near future, we listened to the stories of 20 people. Of our twenty participants, 10 were born before the widespread use of digital technologies and 10 were born afterwards. We did this in order to gain insight on how the current technological landscape has affected the way we play and how it might shift in the future.

digging deeper.

After we talked to our twenty interviewees, we went back over our tapes and transcribed the most important stories onto post-it notes. Once we had the interviews transcribed, we went through three rounds of synthesis pulling meaningful insight and a robust direction for development.

Insight

Tech is intangible. When talking to samantha we noticed that everything that she valued in her crystals, such as their their ability to absorb stories or her connection to the people that used them, could all be descriptors of the smarphone that was in her hand as she presented her collection. This happened more than once but neither time did the person acknowledge their phone with the similar kind of value.

25

Insight

Sometimes capturing is the experience. A big part of playing of playing today inolves capturing of some sort. In the beginning of the process, we had the preconception that capturing detracted from the experience, but a few of our interviewees such as Miggy thought that it added to it.

Insight

Playing is exploring. Whether it was Ian exploring his skill set in baseball or Jo taking his Jeep out for a spin around town. Any time that our interviewees had told us about how they play, it always looped back to exploration

Concept development

In our concept development phase, we focused on the three areas of explore, capture, and connect. These concepts ranged from games that would help you decide where to eat, to identity beacons for a conected world eventually guiding us to our concept, blip.

blip.

Your story is more than pixels on a screen. Instead of having your whole exploration on your phone, and making decisons based on the amount of stars that overly instagrammed restaurant has, blip curates and displays your surroundings allowing you to explore and discover in the real world. Blip can guide you to anythig from a good place to get a sandwich, or a pop-up gallery that’s only there for a week, but what you experience with blip depends on how you explore.

31

33

Capture your experience.

Although blip learns through your day to day experiences, you can save places that you loved, helping blip show you more of what you like and less of what you don’t. Just press and hold blip.

If you lose your blip... you might be able to teach a new one, but it just wont be the same.

Fine tune your adventure.

If your blip seems to be a little lost on what you are trying to discover, you can help quide it by telling blip a little bit more about yourself in the companion app.

MODI _ Mood Speaker

Modi is a wireless speaker that changes the way you listen to music. Rather than shuffling through the seemingly infinite content on services like spotify or giving up total control to a loosely structured radio station, MODI lets you adjust your stream based on your mood.
