AARON WALROND 2015 Product Design Portfolio
ABOUT ME Hi! I’m Aaron, and I am currently in my 2nd year studying Product Design at Bournemouth University. I am currently seeking a year in placement to feed my hunger in improving as a designer through an invaluable experience. I am an inspired designer and I am eager to learn and develop new skill-sets. As a natural problem solver, I am enthusiastic to apply this knowledge gained from my active lifestyle into my design ideas, to develop a functional product with creative flair. I have various hobbies outside of design, such as competing Beach Volleyball at an international level. I have matured a great deal with these experiences, with a trait of never giving up, which relates into my design work, where I am always motivated to find an end solution.

Kitchen Utensils
The purpose for this project was to research and identify a prevailing need within the kitchen. In bakery, a frequent frustration for armatures occurs when using eggs, a common ingredient. Users sometimes find that when they try to break an egg, pieces of the egg shell enters the cake mixture, which can be a hassle, especially if it occurs after the user has inserted any other ingredients previously. Therefore, my product which I have designed has focused on a various range of functions, which include; the limitation of mess caused by cracking the shell, preventing egg shells from entering the mixture, and to separate egg yolks from egg whites if needed.

Finished Prototype
Additive Manufactured prototypes were used to test-rig the product during the development stages to finialise the design of the final product. Creating the prototype from scratch in the workshop allowed an extremely sturdy and therefore functional product to be produced.

Warning Light
This product was required to be compatible with a previously developed PCB board layout. I had total control with regards to the functionality of the CPU Micro-Controller and the positioning and the amount of LEDs used. I therefore designed a warning breakdown light which will clip on sturdy breakdown triangles. It is designed to attract other road users to this breakdown, sooner than a standard breakdown triangle, by using ‘Super-Bright LEDs. Whilst designing this product, I made it one of my priorities to fit the board within the product as neatly as possible, especially with regards to wiring, and to allow the user to have the ability to easily gain access to the battery terminals.

CAD
I use Solidworks to portray a 3D computer model of the products that I have designed. I am also familiar with both Keyshot 5 and Photoview 360 rendering softwares, which I find extremely helpful in aiding certain visualisation techniques, such as showing a product in context. This section displays my competency in complex surface modeling, various joining fits such as snap hooks, lip and groove and assembling structures.

Prototyping
Having the ability to use a workshop to prototype our design ideas is an integral part of our course. These sessions give myself a better understanding of how to design the product to be manufactured in a realistic situation. Hand Modeled and Additive Manufactured concepts are also used to develop and test ergonomic shapes of product concepts, as well as to test the product to ensure that the product is suitably designed with no defects, before committing to the design for further development.

Sketching/ Rendering
Sketching is an essential part of the design process as it allows the designer to communicate their ideas across to clients. The following pieces of work are drawings and renders that I have completed during my own time to improve and to speed up my sketching time.

Other Projects
I have a keen interest in various other aspects of design including; architecture, graphic design and other product design projects outside of university for the design society. With a wide range of interests, I can appreciate design in a more experienced way, and this understanding allows myself to be more flexible and intuitive in my product design work.
