Located in Kitchener, ON, Porifera is an urban development proposal that aims to revive the surrounding 500m radius of Borden Station and improve residents’ quality of life through a diverse set of strategies and focuses. The proposal is divided into 5 main design principles: restoration of the floodplain, providing recreational spaces for community engagement, centralizing retail opportunities and local businesses, improving social aid, and affordable housing for the low-income population. Through the inclusion of a variety of social amenities and barrier removals related to transportation, income, and policies, Porifera aims to design in a responsive manner to the needs and interests of the community by addressing the local demographic. It aims to promote commercial and housing opportunities for local residents, while actively engaging in the revitalization of the floodplain. This is reinforced through a direct focus towards the low-income and homeless population, which is targeted utilizing a variety of affordable housing and shelter approaches.
