SITE CONTEXT
-The site is located in the pols of old city of Ahmedabad which is rich in its culture and heritage. -The challenge was to design a house for a joint family of eight people, which is designed keeping in mind the surroundings and neighborhood, along with the changing modern lifestyle. -Unlike the usual pol house, this is a square plot of approx 185 sq. M (13 x 14 sq. M). The site is a cluster of three adjoining pol houses in a Completely dilapidated state with the only the facade Intact. -The facade being the only breathing wall allows light and ventilation inside the house.

DRASHTI 3 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER GOES TO PLAY SCHOOL 9AM - 12 PM.
Ramaben grandmother, 64 year old eldest figure in the house She goes to temple quite often. She is tv addict and a phone buzz. She likes knitting. She is suffering from arthritis.
Jignesh Bhai 38 Year Old, Elder Son Studied Bachlerlors Of Commerce Office timings: 11- 6 pm Lunch brreak : 1 - 3 pm He is introvert in nature He likes playing games like chess, cards etc.
Leela ben 36 year old She helps in family buisness. She is educated, likes to read and write. She is an introvert as well.
Jinal daughter, 12 year old 6th standard, school timing is 7am- 2 pm. She is extrovert in nature, social butterfly. She likes playing sports.
Shanay son, 8 year old. He studies in 2nd standard. school timings 7am - 12pm He is mischiveous in nature, likes cycling and playing tabla.

During the process of demolition some elements from deewanji ni haveli are considered to be salvaged, such as wooden column, beams, joists, staircase etc. in order to be reused. The studio was about designing a residence for this family while retaining the facade. We had to design and plan the interior spaces and incorporate the salvaged elements in the new design. The elements like windows, door, columns, joists are used to design the facade, with respective of the interior spaces , so the facade seamlessly goes with the context around.

Ventilation
-Streets and frontage of homes are narrow, which makes the home remain cool.
-The facade is the only breathing wall amongst the other 3.
- Cross Ventilation through the Courtyard and facade.
-The hot air evaporates, the cool air condenses and enters through the courtyard , creating environmental thermal comfortable.
-Helps in bringing in fresh air and light.
-The facade are richly decorated with wooden intricate carvings- reducing solar gain and provides thermal comfort.

TYPES OF SPACES
-User and their characteristics have been given the at-most priority keeping functionalist as the approach to design.
-Taking an inspiration from the linear form of the traditional pol houses, in the courtyards have been at center of the spaces.
-PRIVATE SPACES
- Every space has an experience of its own.
-Here, the linearity, splits into two parts in which the experiences have remains the same .
-COURTYARDS -SEMI PRIVATE SPACES -PUBLIC SPACES
GROUND FLOOR -When you enter the home, one feels the longitivity which is similar to the Experience of linearity in the pol houses. -On the right, is the Living room which can extend unto the courtyard during large gatherings. -Kitchen is placed at the facade, easy Connectivity to the street. -Dinning connects the kitchen and the Backyard.

-Dadi, the eldest of all, has her room on the same level keeping in mind her social lifestyle. -Verandah, is retained keeping in mind the Interaction with the neighbours, living the old city lifestyle.

The eldest member of the house , Ramaben is given the space most near to the heart of the home.
Living & dining space opens to the courtyard bringing in light, ventillation & experiences volumtric expansion
FIRST FLOOR -Vertical Circulation, is close by the kitchen & dining, which are the most used spaces round the clock. -On the first floor, are two bedroomsPraful and Hansa’s, room and their daughter Drashti’s having an attached bathroom and working space along with sit outs. -Both of them having an extrovert nature , happens to be on the first floor. - The master-bed is attached with a Balcony and has a low lying sitting space.

-Praful, lawyer by profession, has his home office near the service areas.
SECOND FLOOR -On the second floor, are three bedroomsJignesh and Leela’s, room, their kids- jinal and shanay and a guest room. Has attached bathroom and working space along with sit outs. -Both of them having an introvert nature , happens to be on the second floor. - The master-bed is attached with a Balcony. -A reading space cum Study area is at the extreme corner of the floor.

-The guest room in future can become an individual bedroom for the kids. -

Masterbedroom -2. Has an attached bathroom and private balcony. Opens up to the main courtyard.
TERRACE -On the terrace, is a re-creational room and one bathroom. -The recreational room can be used open up to semi covered area. Can be well utilized in household activities like drying spices, celebrating festivals like Uttarayan and Terrace parties.
