Unique places to stay in New Zealand

THE STAYDIUM – EDEN PARK, AUCKLAND

Grab yourself a beer, hop into bed and celebrate your team scoring… along with the other 50,000 fans at Eden Park Stadium. This is glamping on another level, with domes pitched overlooking all the onfield action. Two campsites are available next to each other so you and your mates can make a big night of it.

YELLOW SUBMARINE – MARTON, MANAWATŪ- WHANGANUI

If you had a choice of staying in a concrete block motel with views of a rail track or living in a yellow submarine, what would it be? Get on board the Beatlemania as you step into this subnautical wonder, suspended among redwood trees. Deceptively spacious, it’s able to sleep your fab four; you’ll be glad you found this place for a hard day’s night!

AREA 51 FUTURO HOUSE – ŌHOKA, CANTERBURY

Step on board the groovy 1974 Futuro house, one of only 50 in the world and fully furnished with retro designer pieces. This Tardis of a craft is huge inside and can house enough of your species for a decent intergalactic invasion. The outer space is pretty neat too, with a pool, spa, sauna and outdoor shower. Located 25 minutes outside of Christchurch CBD, they even offer free pickups in a TESLA.

THE COLONIAL WAGON, KAIKŌURA

Make yourself at home on the range in this colonial-style covered wagon. It sleeps up to four guests and has a mountain range as the backdrop; it’s your very own little house on the prairie. With animals to feed close by, the kids will love this one! They have another five ‘wacky stays’ to check out here also.

THE JAILHOUSE – CHRISTCHURCH

Get locked up for your own good. Formerly Addington Prison (running from 1874 to 1999) the Jailhouse has been operating as a backpackers’ hostel since 2006. Sensibly located in the bustling Christchurch suburb of Addington with plenty of cafés and bars around, so it’s not too far to get frog-marched home after lights out.

FAIRYTALE TREEHOUSE, WHANGĀREI

Slip into your very own fairytale as you closet yourself away from the world and into this delightful treetop fantasy land. Cleverly constructed within tree boughs, this elevated cottage will have you re-enacting Snow White or the Hobbit in no time!

SKYLARK CABIN – TWIZEL

For something away from the maddening crowd try this architecturally designed dwelling. Featuring a giant circular skylight above the master bed, you’ll be able to cosy up, lay back and drift off while gazing up at the starry night sky.

THE VULCAN HOTEL – ST BATHANS, CENTRAL OTAGO

If you love that feeling of your hair standing up on end, stay here, the hotel heralded as New Zealand’s most haunted. See if you can catch out Rose who has taken up residence in the room of her demise and likes to play with electrical devices to spook you out.
