the AA VISITING SCHOOL The AA VS is the part of the school dedicated to spread the AA culture internationally, and also to speculate or research in different agendas an interest, around and beyond architecture all over the world. The AA VS is a global architecture programme and network comprising a myriad of formas and agendas, all of which contribute to the endless debate about how to educate an architect. Launched in Dubai in 2008, the AAVS has now hosted over 4.000 students in more than 100 different programmes held across all five continents.

The AA Terrain Lab Visiting School focuses on the landscapes of the Anthropocene, exploring several design methodologies to reveal its consequences, challenges and propose alternative scenarios.

This year the school ventures to the riparian territories of Navarre, shaped by the large scale water engineering required for its intensive agricultural production.

Various cutting edge technologies are used, including drone based data collection, landform simulation models, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), scripting analysis and video editing software, as a way of documenting and speculating on these manufactured territories at multiple scales.
Se han empleado distintas tecnologías de vanguardia, como la recopilación de datos con drones, modelos de simulación fluvial, Sistemas de Información Geográfica (GIS) y software de edición de vídeo, como forma de documentar y especular sobre estos territorios manufacturados a múltiples escalas.
Participants investigate on the territory of Navarre and more specifically on the municipalities of Lodosa and Lerin, using methods common to geographers, reporters, architects, cartographers and urbanists in order to uncover the local conflicts and speculate upon future scenarios.
Los participantes utilizarán métodos comunes de geógrafos, periodistas de investigación, arquitectos, cartógrafos y urbanistas. Investigando los territorios de la Ribera Navarra, con especial atención a los municipios de Lodosa y Lerín, para descubrir conflictos locales y especualr con escenarios futuros.

FACULTY ELENA LONGHIN, VS Co-Director
SILVIA RIBOT, VS Co-Director
Elena is an architect, urbanist and researcher. She has worked throughout Europe and South America with several practices such as Secchi-Viganò and OMA. She has taught the Intermediate 15 Unit at the Architectural Association as well as the AA Visiting School in Pyongyang (DPRK) and Myanmar. Her recent works, including participations to the 15th and 14th Venice Biennale, have been published in both printed and digital media and currently exhibited in Chile, Japan and Hong Kong. She received her MArch in Architecture and Urbanism from the IUAV and graduated in Landscape Urbanism from the AA.
Silvia is a Spanish architect and landscape urbanist. She has been a tutor at the AA Visiting School in Mexico City and previously has taught within the Landscape Urbanism Programme. She has lectured in UK, Spain, Italy and Chile. She works between largescale research projects and practice, collaborating with several established offices in the field of landscape architecture among which GroundLab in the last year. Her work has been published and exhibited in Europe and South America. She studied architecture in Madrid and Sao Paulo and gained her MA in Landscape Urbanism at the AA.
Elena es una arquitecta, urbanista e investigadora. Ha trabajado en Europa y Sudamérica en oficinas como Secchi-Viganò y OMA. Ha sido profesora a la Intermediate 15 Unit en la Architectural Association, además de en la AAVS en Pyongyang (Korea del Norte) y Myanmar. Es una doctoranda a l’universidad IUAV de Venecia y arquitecta registrada en Italia. Su trabajo reciente incluye la participación en las 14 y 15 Biennale de Venecia, y ha sido publicado en Chile, Japón y Hong Kong. Se graduó en Arquitectura en la IUAV y en el master Landscape Urbanism en la AA.
Silvia es una arquitecta y urbanista Española. Ha sido profesora en la Visiting School de la AA en México y anteriormente ha dado clase en el Master de Landscape Urbanism, también en la AA. Ha sido ponente en UK, España, Italia y Chile. Trabaja en proyectos de investigación de gran escala, colaborando con distintas oficinas internacionales. Francis McCloskey Francis is an architectural designer with a specialisation in computational design for integrated project delivery. Francis recently acquired his M.Arch with Distinction in Emergent Technologies and Design from the AA. He currently works at NBBJ’s London office as a computational design and facades lead. His prior professional experience consists of work experiences in Europe and Asia with participation in a number of small projects and competitions internationally, and has lectured at the AA and RCA.

Ignacio Espinosa Ignacio is a media producer and drone pilot. He is the co-founder and co-director of the startup Dronemadrid, inside which he develops drone flights for data collection, video recording and aerial images.

This year the school will venture into the riparian territories of Navarre, shaped by the large-scale water engineering required for its intensive agricultural production.

The riparian territories of Navarre have specific traditional formations that consist of flood irrigation, reduced plots, and small scale agriculture. Specially present along the Ebro and Ega rivers, having a very strong agriculture tradition, and growing local products known worldwide.

As part of the collaboration between AAVS Terrain Lab and the Universidad de Navarra, participants gain a theoretical understanding of the anthropocenic landscape and its consequences, challenges and possibilities. The VS provides workshops, excursions, seminars and lectures to develop a critical toolbox of mapping and visual techniques.

Participants have been taught cartographic and simulations software, that have allowed them to develop a territorial project, and have provided key skills for their future careers.
SITE VISITS During the workshop, there have been a set of site visits, that have allowed students to engage with the community. In this visits there has been a drone pilot, that has taught students how this cutting edge technology can be employed in urban design.

For the sake of bringing all the actors inside the territorial project and being able of developing a critical look, we believe in the necessity to engage with the local community. The workshop has fulfilled this aim trough site visits and interviews.

PROJECTIVE GROUNDS / TERRITORIOS PROYECTIVOS Participants will start working in teams to research and map the specific conditions of the riparian landscapes of Navarre. We will visit the agricultural fields and fluvial landscapes along the rivers Ebro and Ega. Los participantes empezarán a trabajar en equipos para investigar y cartografiar las condiciones específicas de los paisajes ribereños de Navarra. Visitaremos los campos agrícolas y los paisajes fluviales a lo largo de los ríos Ebro y Ega.
ALTERNATIVE SCENARIOS / ESCENARIOS ALTERNATIVOS Students are expected to develop a set of proposals that speculate with an alternative future for this territories. They will apply all the skills developed throughout the workshop and will be guided by tutors in the production of the materials for a media product. BROADCASTING / DIFUSIÓN The workshop will end with a public exhibition and presentation at the College of Architects of Navarre, in which the work developed by students will be shown. Proposal will be judged by an expert panel and the local community to start a discussion on potential futures for the riparian territories of Navarre. El taller finalizará con una exposición pública y una presentación en el Colegio de Arquitectos de Navarra, en la que se mostrará el trabajo desarrollado por los estudiantes. La propuesta será juzgada por un grupo de expertos y la comunidad local para iniciar una discusión sobre futuros potenciales para los territorios ribereños de Navarra, y en un sentido más amplio, sobre los paisajes fluviales.

WORKSHOP RESULTS / RESULTADOS DEL WORKSHOP LARGE SCALE / ESCALA REGIONAL SUPER CITIES Particpants learned how to read and understand how the water has shaped the territory and how its towns can cooperate together to create a powerful synergy. The territory that has been studied presents two very different topographical conditions: the floodplains and the plateau. Due to this conditions, students have researched on these two different scenarios proposing different alternatives for each of them. SUPER CIUDADES Los estudiantes estarán trabajando en grupos, estudiando las diferentes escalas y temas del proyecto territorial. El taller se dividirá en diferentes secciones que guiarán a los estudiantes a través del proyecto territorial. El territorio que se ha estudiadio presenta dos condiciones topográficas muy diferentes: las llanuras de inundació y la meseta. Debido a estas condiciones, los estudiantes han investigado estos diferentes escenarios, proponiendo diferentes alternativas para cada uno de ellos.

WORKSHOP RESULTS / RESULTADOS DEL WORKSHOP MODELS / MAQUETAS Model making represented the digital surface students learned to manipulate through the GIS program and through the scanning of the ground obtained from drone photogrammetry. Model were done with CNC technoloy. Students did different tests representing the opposed conditions of floodplain and plaeau present in the Lodosa and Lerín. En el taller de maquetas se representaron las superficies digitales que los estudiantes aprendieron a manipular con el software GIS. Modelos obtenidos mediante fotogrametría con dron. Las maquetas se hicieron con tecnología de control numérico (CNC). Los estudiantes hicieron diferentes pruebas representando las condiciones opuestas de llanura de inundación y meseta que se dan en Lerín y Lodosa.

WORKSHOP RESULTS / RESULTADOS DEL WORKSHOP DRAWINGS / DIBUJOS Students has used sketches to portrait the conditions of the landscpae, and tried to depict both the behaviour of the river, how it affetcs its surrounding territories and how their project would modify these conditions. They also have produced a wide array of drawings of small scale interventions for both Lerín and Lodosa.
Los estudiantes mediante dibujos han reflejado el paisaje, intentando plasmar el comportamiento del río y como afecta a los territorios circundantes. Al mismo tiempo han producido una colelción de dibujos de intervenciónes de pequeña escala para Lerín y Lodosa.

WORKSHOP RESULTS / RESULTADOS DEL WORKSHOP EXHIBITION / EXPOSICIÓN
During the final presentation on the last day of the course, participants had the chance to explain their work to a wider audience. The set up of the exhibition was composed of models, drawings, sketches and a short documentary which explained both the experince of the course and the digital proccess and media students learned and implemented. The presentation open the 1-month exhibition and attracted both the population of Pamplona and professionals from different fileds from the Navarre region.
Durante la presentación final en el último día del taller, los participantes han tenido la oportunidad de explicar su trabajo al público. La exposición se componía de maquetas, planos, dibujos y un documental. Material mediante el cual explicaban la experiencia del curso y las herramientas digitales y de visualización aprendidas. La exposición se realizó en el COAVN (Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos Vasco - Navarro). Tuvo una duración de un mes y atrajo tanto a la población de Pamplona como a profesionales de diferentes campos en la Comunidad Foral de Navarra.
