One thing I would like to put in the picture, Shakku was my university friend and Jahanzeb and Zeeshan those are my childhood friend they hadn’t met him before and this is the first time they are meeting face to face. I was worried if they would not accept each other it could spoiled the whole picture. I am still surprised since they are more interconnected than me. 15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

15 DAYS IN PARADISE I was having dinner in Gulistan-Johar, Karachi at Balochistan Sajji, with Jahanzeb and Shakku on a noisy night of September and telling them some hard and bitter experiences of London. "Such a nice food that was!" especially the Bihari Booti ordered by Jahanzeb. After having dinner and a good chat Shakku asked to leave. “When we are meeting again” asked Shakku, "I’ll be in Punjab (a province of Pakistan) for around two weeks and as soon as I’ll return I’ll ring you up” I replied. Suddenly I realised Why not to invite him as well ? For an instant, I felt sorry for not asking Shakku for his company. Jahanzeb interrupted and said "Hey bro why don’t you join us?". Without wasting a single moment Shakku agreed to join us on this tour. Yeah, this was the tour that I have planned ages ago when I watched a movie storied on three friends meeting long time after the school life. If I will go in depth actually, it was a dream in College time to go for All Pakistan Tour with friends and eventually we also played some lotteries but

7

couldn’t succeed or you can say it was not planned by the God at that time. Next day, I returned back to my home town and meet Zeeshan, who was waiting for me to initiate the program. As agreed with Shakku and Jahanzeb, I explain everything to him but surprisingly, he refused to come with us due to some restrictions from his family especially elder brother, for sake of his safety and security. It was an easy Job for me to go for a debate with his brother and after two three deliberate debates finally, I convinced him and went to Rail Station and booked the tickets so that no one can argue ahead. It was decided that if we have to enjoy the trip we will go via train and will enjoy each and every moment with ease and relax. I had the tickets in my hands and imagining the fun we were about to have. I informed everyone about the tickets, that was Taizgam Express and we had seat Nos. 49, 50, 51 & 52 on a Sunday of September. As decided, Shakku was supposed to come from Karachi on same seats reserving from unauthorised occupation by other passengers. It was heavy rain on that night in my home town, mostly roads were drawn but we Three Musketeers were still outside, shopping petty articles for trip. Around Midnight I felt really sick and dramatically I started vomiting, Mum and others were not happy to let me go for such a long trip and away from the home for so many days in that condition. I called Zeeshan and told him to come on bike; we are going hospital because I'm not feeling well. Instead of Zeeshan,

8

Zoobi (little brother of Jahanzeb) picked me up and took me to hospital where Doctor gave injection and charged his fees for disturbing his sleep. It was an amazing part of the trip that the train was scheduled on 8pm of 9th Sep and it arrived at 5am next morning. At that time I do not wanted to see Shah’s face as he was making me nerves predicting that the starting of trip is not good so far but I still had feeling that where I’m taking you, would be one of the most memorable and unforgettable time in your lives.

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

THE DAY ONE It was a painful wait of eight hours and we all were waiting to see Shakku face from the train. Finally, the train popped in and I remember, a smart thin guy in golden trouser and black shirt with some printing and embroidery on it, was shaking his hands to show his appearance. I entered in the coach, there were some people sitting around there and I started showing stance and pointed them to leave our seats but I couldn’t realised such a beautiful young lady was becoming a potential girl friend of Mr. Shakku, who was having a really serious time with here since 8 hours when we were waiting for the train to arrive at station. He named her “Miss Train” and unbelievingly she also gave her number to him which was really shocking for everyone and especially for me as I know him since 2004 from University that he’s a Nowomen man. We left our first station at about half past five and soon opened the food boxes. It was really co-incidentally formal that every time none of us were hungry but whenever we started eating no one was looking civilised. We finished our breakfast quickly but I was quite careful due to queasiness. It was drizzling from the start. When we reached Rohri Station, It was showering and the dates tree were making that landscape really groovy and inspiring and off course I couldn’t control my inside hidden photographer and took couple of pictures.

A view of Rohri Station, Sukkur from train’s window

The train was rambling and was too much late but who cared…! We were laughing, singing, dancing and having fun in every meaning. We were playing board game, snake game and cards. After completing a day full of fun when everybody felt hungry, we were anxiously waiting to reach Multan asap. Someone from Zeeshan’s relatives was supposed to come at Multan station with food and drinks. When we reached Multan and one of Zeeshan’s cousin brought our dinner and apparently we started waiting for train to start off again so that we could have some food. It’s funny but its reality.

14

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

After having dinner everyone felt tired and went to the berth for rest but off course train was still rambling with same speed. So many times we felt that this train is even slower than the motorbikes running on the roads along with the railway track. When lying on berths, I don’t know about others but definitely I was thinking about my previous journey in the train and linking those moments which are now quite blurred. Associating thoughts, quotes and verses with someone special has always been my favourite hobby, so to call poetry. We spent this whole day in the train and finally it started giving feelings like this is our second home. We have made so many friends but unfortunalty after couple of sting operations from the first coach to last one; we couldn’t found even a single beautiful young girl which we could remember as a souvenir of this journey. Apart from 90 percent male passengers either there were Aunties or just aunties in the train, so Shakku and Zeeshan remained very worried throughout the journey.

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

THE DAY TWO We arrived at Lahore station around noon and came out of station to get taxi. Our next destination was Defence Lahore. As we were clued up about the taxi drivers at Lahore station we didn’t believed on anyone and did what best stupidity we could do. We hired a taxi belonged to Quaid-i-Azam era, lockless, windowless, no side mirrors and the driver was so confident like he was driving in the air. We reached the destination at Mammut Lahore Office, where we were supposed to stay while we were in Lahore. Initially, when we entered into the building it was really nice impression, neat and clean office and residence. We got shower and got fresh. I was surprised to see the hospitality and sprit of that young guy Zahid, who become such a good friend of us and even he proved to be. After getting fresh Sir Shahzad called us on lunch. I haven't seen a 50 plus years young man of that type. He was highly energetic, funny, wise and full of life. Having two married kids he claimed to have more than fifteen girlfriends which was really outraging for us, While enjoying nice chicken and veg curry with thick naan bread, everyone got shocked when Sir Shahzad asked a traumatizing question to all of us, "How many girlfriends you have ?" Ooops..! Everyone was speechless, Shah broken the ice and replied “We all are not of that type", We all are shier except Shaikh, who is multimillionaire in that sense. For more than an hour we took really useful coaching on how to impress girls in just one conversation.

17

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

After lunch, we get ready to our next address Sheikhupura to meet Hamza and bajjoo (my sister and nephew). Sir Shahzad offered his car and driver that was really kind and we thanked him so that we could save our time. We left Lahore for Sheikhupura in the evening and after one hour we were at Hiran Minaar, Sheikhupura. As named Hiran Minaar, Shakku was anxiously excited about to see Hiran of Prince Salem. He thought either there would be a Deer in real or a statue. Hiran Minaar in the history Hiran Minaar (Minaret of Antelope) is set in peaceful environs near Lahore in Sheikhupura, Pakistan. It was constructed by Emperor Jahangir as a monument to Mansraj, one of his pet deer. The structure consists of a large, almost-square water tank with an octagonal pavilion in its centre, built during the reign of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan; a causeway with its own gateway connects the pavilion with the mainland and a 100-foot (30 m)-high Minaar, or minaret. At the centre of each side of the tank, a brick ramp slopes down to the water, providing access for royal animals and wild game. The Minaar itself was built by Emperor Jahangir in 1606 to honour the memory of a pet hunting antelope named Mansraj. Unique features of this particular complex are the antelope's grave and the distinctive water collection system. At each corner

18

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

of the tank (approximately 750 by 895 feet (273 m) in size), is a small, square building and a subsurface water collection system which supplied the tank; only one of these water systems is extensively exposed today. Another special feature of Hiran Minaar is its location and environment: the top of the Minaar is perhaps the best place in the province of Punjab to get a feel for the broader landscape and its relationship to a Mughals site. It was quite humid and sunny evening of September 9 at Hiran Minaar, Sheikhupura. A stunning and stupefying view was letting us to think about that era when this mind-blowing architecture was built. Nice smell of soil and deep steady water was portraying the Love and affection of Emperor Jahangir with his Deer Mansraj.

Unfortunately, Shakku couldn't found his beloved Deer and he's still moaning for that. We tried to save these views in our cameras and captured many pictures with different backgrounds and views. Than we asked driver to take the car towards Baji's home in the centre of Sheikhupura city. As presumed young kid Hamza was waiting for us outside his house. We met Baji and Big Bro; I recognised that smell of Palaow rice. When Baji asked for dinner everyone spontaneously replied "No No we are full" and as it was earlier mentioned when we started dinner, no one remained civilized and ate a lot.

22

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

After that testiest rice and kebabs which we never had on that tour again, we returned back to Lahore. After night tea we went to the bed and tiredness helped us not to think more.

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

THE DAY THIRD It was a sunny and humid morning in Lahore. The temperature would be around 36 Celsius but it was unexpectedly windy. We finished break fast after getting showers. It was again a traditional Lahori hospitality which gave us opportunity to test the traditional Halwapuri with testy chick pea. Today we have to look around in Lahore and vicinities. It was one of our planning that when ever we will enter in any city we will try to contact a friend who could accompanied with us to save the time and visit the places properly and suitably. We called one of our friends Mohsin Khan, Mohsin was our childhood friend and who moved Lahore couple of years ago due to his job in Punjab Government. I excused going with them as it was programmed that I have to see one of my friend their in Lahore, so I promised them to join them back at Minar-i-Pakistan after that meeting. As programmed, I arrived at Minaar-i-Pakistan and it was really pleasing to see Mohsin in Jens and rough T-shirt, he was looking lit bit fatty but by nature we couldn’t recognised even a single change in him, we found him as naughty as he was in childhood, laughing, amusing, humorous and funny. Minaar-i-Pakistan in history Before moving ahead, I would like to give some information about Minaar-i-Pakistan.

Minaar-e-Pakistan, which literally translates to "Tower of Pakistan" in Urdu, is a public monument in Iqbal Park Lahore, Pakistan, which was built in the 1960s to commemorate the Lahore Resolution. The tower is constructed on the site where, on 23 March 1940, seven years before the formation of Pakistan, the Muslim League passed the Pakistan Resolution (Qarardad-e-Pakistan), demanding the creation of Pakistan. This was the first official declaration to establish a separate homeland for the Muslims living in the Indian Subcontinent. The tower reflects modern architecture.

The tower was designed and supervised by Nasreddin MuratKhan. The structural design was given by a civil engineer Abdul Rahman Khan Niazi from Lahore, who was working with Murat Khan. The design approved by the President was built by Mian Abdul Khaliq and Company. The foundation stone was laid on 23 March 1960. The construction took eight years, and was completed in 1968. The Minaar was completed on 31 October 1968 at an estimated cost of Rs. 500,000. The money was collected by imposing additional tax on the cinema and horse racing tickets on the demand of governor of west Pakistan Akhtar Hussain. Today, the minaret provides a panoramic view to visitors who can climb up the stairs or through an elevator. The parks around the monument include marble fountains and an artificial lake.

26

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

The base is about 8 meters above the ground. The tower rises about 62 meters on the base, thus the total height of minaret is about 92 meters above the ground. The unfolding petals of the flower-like base are 9 meters high. The diameter of the tower is about 9.75 m, and marble. The rostrum is built of patterned tiles, and faces the Badshahi Mosque. The base comprises four platforms. To symbolise humble beginnings of the freedom struggle, first platform is built with uncut Taxila stones, second platform is made of hammer-dressed stones, whereas third platform is of chiselled stones. Polished white marble at the fourth and final platform depicts the success of the Pakistan Movement. From the very childhood, whatever I have read about Dr. Iqbal that created great respect for him in my heart but this one paragraph that really admired me to understand his status in the eyes of Mr. Jinnah who was one of the most far thinking leaders in the world.

27

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

So, we decided to first visit the grave of Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal (r.t.a) which was just at walking distance from there. After crossing the road there was a huge central gate of “Badshahi Mosque”. We could see the mini souvenir shops along the both sides of entry road. Shopkeepers were calling in traditional Punjabi accent to get the attentions of visitors. Many cold drink stalls were also their using prerecorded taps to hire the attentions of people which was really amusing and we saw some foreigners capturing photographs with those decorated stalls. We crossed those stalls and entered into the main gate. Went directly to see the grave of Dr. Iqbal, we asked for blessing of God on him in our prays and moved back to see the “Shahi Qila” 28

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

Shahi Qila (Lahore Fort) in the history

The Lahore Fort, locally referred to as Shahi Qila is citadel of the city of Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan. It is located in the northwestern corner of the Walled City of Lahore. The trapezoidal composition is spread over 20 hectares. Origins of the fort go as far back as antiquity, however, the existing base structure was built during the reign of Mughal Emperor Akbar between 1556–1605 and was regularly upgraded by

29

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

subsequent Mughal, Sikh and British rulers. It has two gates one is known as Alamgiri Gate build by Emperor Aurangzeb which opens towards Badshahi Mosque and other older one known as Masjidi Gate which opens towards Masti Gate Area of Walled City and was built by Emperor Akbar. Currently Alamgiri Gate is used as the principal entrance while Masti Gate is permanently closed .The fort manifests the rich traditions of Mughal architecture. Some of the famous sites inside the fort include: Sheesh Mahal, Alamgiri Gate, Naulakha pavilion, and Moti Masjid. In 1981, the fort was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with the Shalimar Gardens. The origins of Lahore Fort are obscure and are traditionally based on various myths.[3] However, during the excavation carried out in 1959 by the Department of Archaeology, in front of Diwan-e-Aam, a gold coin of Mahmood of Ghazni dated AH 416 (1025 AD) was found at a depth of 7.62 metres from the level of the lawns. Cultural layers continued to a further depth of 5 metres, giving strong indications that people had lived here long before the conquest of Lahore by Mahmood in 1021 AD. Further mention of the fort is traceable to Shahab-ud-din Muhammad Ghuri's successive invasions of Lahore from 1180 to 1186 AD. In 1758, the fort was captured by the Maratha forces under Raghunathrao. Then the Bhangi Sikh Dynasty (1716–1810), one of the 12 Sikh Kingdoms (Misl) of Punjab ruled Lahore City from 1760s until 1799 and expanded the City of Lahore. When

30

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

Ranjit Singh, another Sikh chief from the Gujranwala area took Lahore from the Bhangi Misl the Lahore Fort fell to Ranjit Singh and in 1801 he was crowned as the emperor of all of the Punjab. Lahore Fort and the city from (1799–1849) remained under the control of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, Sher-e-Panjab, and his sons, grandsons and wives, until the fall of the last Sikh empire or the Lahore Darbar in 1849.

The structure of fort is dominated by Persian gardens influence that deepened with the successive refurbishments by subsequent emperors. The fort is clearly divided into two sections: first the administrative section, which is well connected with main entrances, and comprises larger garden areas and Diwan-e-khas for royal audiences. The second - a private and concealed residential section - is divided into courts in the northern part, accessible through 'elephant gate'. It also contains Shish Mahal (Hall of Mirrors of Mirror Palace), and spacious bedrooms and smaller gardens. On the outside, the walls are decorated with blue Persian kashi tiles. The original entrance faces the Maryam Zamani Mosque, whereas the larger Alamgiri Gate opens to the Hazuri Bagh through to the majestic Badshahi Mosque.

31

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

It cannot be said with certainty when the Lahore Fort was originally constructed or by whom, since this information is lost to history, possibly forever. However, evidence found in archaeological digs gives strong indications that it was built long before 1025 AD. In 1241 AD destroyed by Mongols. Than in 1267 AD Rebuilt by Anushay Mirza Ghiyas ud din Balban. In 1398 AD Amir Tamir's armies destroyed again. Sultan Mubarak Shah Syed rebuilt by mud in 1421 AD. In 1432 AD Sheikh Ali of Kabul occupied the fort.

32

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

In 1566 AD Rebuilt by Mughal emperor Akbar, in solid brick masonry on its earlier foundations and extended towards the river Ravi, which then and until about 1849 AD, flowed along its fortification on the north. Akbar also built Doulat Khana-e-Khas-o-Am, the famousJharoka-e-Darshan (Balcony for Royal Appearance), Masjidi Gate. In 1618 AD Son of Emperor Akbar, Jahangir adds Doulat Khana-e-Jehangir and later on his son Shahjahan builds Shish Mahal (Mirror Palace) in 1631 AD and Khawabgah (a dream place or sleeping area), Hamam (bath ), Khilwat Khana (retiring room), and Moti Masjid (Pearl Mosque) in 1633AD. Shahjahan also added Diwan-e-Khas (Hall of Special Audience) in 1645 AD. Aurangzeb Alamgir also added massively fluted Alamgiri Gate in 1674 AD.

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

I would recommend people to at least visit once who have interest in ancient and historical structures and have the inspiration to see Taaj Mehal in Agra, India, Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle in London and Royal Castle in Edinburgh, Scotland. It was a mouth opening moment to see Shahi Qila (Royal Fort). It is unthinkable how they have built such a giant architecture in that time of the world without the help of cranes and other machinery. When you enter into the fort, the streets and huge walls remind you the majestic and

35

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

imperial significance of Mughal Emperors. The drain system is still in perfect condition. Unlike the castles in England and Scotland this fort was built with the bricks which are still in same condition and reflect the sculpture of that time after hundreds of years. There are signs fire vassals on the walls for the lightening and heating. While walking in the streets inside the Fort I reached into the Mughal period and was imagining the horses of the cabinet of Mughal emperor coming straight towards me. One thing is sure that no one can imagine the life style of those Emperors without visiting and looking with their own eyes. One more thing which is most significant and you can not see anywhere else in other Empires, is the Mughal Cabinet Building. Where the Emperor used to sit with his cabinet to listen and resolve the contemporary issues. There is higher podium for the King to take a pew and structural design reflects the standing order of cabinet members. It is quite nice to see the pillars and ceiling design and worth of that art, those hands had created in the history.

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

After enjoying the astonishing structure we ran for the prayer which we had to offer in Badshahi Mosque with hundreds of people from all over Pakistan. Before we could entered into the mosque we deposited our shoes on a counter where we have been charged for each pair of shoes, which was really miserable for me as I know how much budget we have fixed to look after the heritage and specially the mosques and even everyone have to pay a fees for the security of their shoes which is wretched and uncommon in other part of the world including Saudi Arabia.

The Badshahi Mosque (Royal Mosque) in Lahore, commissioned by the sixth Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb in 1671 and completed in 1673, is the second largest mosque in Pakistan and South Asia and the fifth largest mosque in the world. Epitomising the beauty, passion and grandeur of the Mughal era, it is Lahore's most famous landmark and a major tourist attraction.

Today, it remains the second largest mosque in Pakistan and South Asia and the fifth largest mosque in the world after the

Masjid al-Haram (Grand Mosque) of Makkah, the AlMasjid al-Nabawi (Prophet's Mosque) in Madina, the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca and the Faisal Mosque in Islamabad. To appreciate its large size, the four minarets of the Badshahi Mosque are 13.9 ft (4.2 m) taller than those of the Taj Mahal and the main platform of the Taj Mahal can fit inside the 278,784 sq ft (25,899.9 m2) courtyard of the Badshahi Mosque, which is the largest mosque courtyard in the world.

In 1993, the Government of Pakistan recommended the inclusion of the Badshahi Mosque as a World Heritage Site in UNESCO's World Heritage List, where it has been

42

included in Pakistan's Tentative List for possible nomination to the World Heritage List by UNESCO.

The architecture and design of the Badshahi Mosque closely resembles that of the smaller Jama Mosque in Delhi, India, which was built in 1648 by Aurangzeb's father and predecessor, Emperor Shah Jahan. Its design was inspired by Islamic, Persian, Central Asian and Indian influences. Like the character of its founder, the Mosque is bold, vast and majestic in its expression. The steps leading to the Main Prayer Hall and its floor are in Sang-e-Alvi (variegated marble). The Main Prayer Hall is divided into seven sections by means of multi-foil arches

43

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

supported on heavy piers, three of which bear the double domes finished externally in white marble. The remaining four sections are roofed with flat domes. The interior of Main Prayer Hall is richly embellished with stucco tracery (Manbatkari), fresco work, and inlaid marble. The exterior is decorated with stone carving as well as marble inlay on red sandstone, especially of loti form motifs in bold relief. The embellishment has Indo-Greek, Central Asian and Indian architectural influence both in technique and motifs. The skyline is furnished by beautiful ornamental merlons inlaid with marble lining adding grace to the perimeter of the mosque. In its various architectural features like the vast square courtyard, the side aisles (dalans), the four corner minarets (minars), the projecting central transept of the prayer chamber and the grand entrance gate, is summed up the history of development of mosque architecture of the Muslim world over the thousand years prior to its construction in 1673. The north enclosure wall of the Mosque was laid close to the Ravi River bank, so a majestic gateway could not be provided on that side and, to keep the symmetry the gate had to be omitted on the south wall as well. Thus, a four Aiwan plan like the earlier Jama Mosque in Delhi could not be replicated at the Badshahi Mosque.

44

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

The walls were built with small kiln-burnt bricks laid in kankar, lime mortar (a kind of hydraulic lime) but have a veneer of red sandstone. The steps leading to the prayer chamber and its plinth are in variegated marble. The main prayer chamber is very deep and is divided into seven compartments by rich engraved arches carried on very heavy piers. Out of the 7 compartments, three double domes finished in marble have superb curvature, whilst the rest have curvilinear domes with a central rib in their interior and flat roof above. In the eastern front aisle, the ceiling of the compartment is flat (qalamdani) with a curved border (ghalatan) at the cornice level.

45

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

The original floor of the courtyard was laid with small kilnburnt bricks laid in the Mussalah pattern. The present red sandstone flooring was laid during the last major refurbishment (1939–60). Similarly, the original floor of the main prayer chamber was in cut and dressed bricks with marble and Sang-iAbri lining forming Mussalah and was also replaced by Marble Mussalah during the last major repairs.

Because it was really humid and hot in Lahore, so before entering into the Mosque we took some cold drinks to refuel ourselves. When I entered into the mosque after almost __ stairs, I remained shocked to see the courtyard of the Mosque which was like a ground where whole nation can come together to offer the prayer with the King. For wudu (to wash your hands and body parts before offering prayer) there was a separate area, if you are standing in that area you could see Shahi Qila (Royal Fort) on your on hand and Badshahi Mosque on other hand, which was really stimulating and invigorating. After getting inspired by those colossal models of Art, we decided to go visit another most stirring spiritual location in Lahore, The Daata Darbaar.

Data Darbar (or Durbar), is one of the oldest Muslim

shrines in the sub-continent. It houses the remains of a Sufi saint, Abul Hassan Ali Hajvery (more commonly known as Daata Ganj Baksh, meaning the master who bestows treasures). He is said to have lived on the site in the 11th century. The shrine is located near the Bhaati Gate. It was originally built by the Ghaznavi king Sultan Zakiruddin Ibrahim in the late eleventh century, and has been expanded several times. For centuries his tomb was visited by Muslims and Hindus in search of his blessings but since partition, most visitors have been Muslim, although people of all religions are welcome.

47

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

Many Pakistani politicians are frequent visitors. On special occasions, the shrine is decorated with lights; dinner is prepared for hundreds of people and visitors dance while musicians play Sufi music for hours. At the boundary of the shrine, Muslims recite the Qur'an, and pay tributes. There have been rising security fears in recent years after threats by Taliban militants. The large size of the complex which houses the shrine and the fact that it is open at all hours to the public makes protecting it extremely difficult. On 1 July 2010, two suicide bombers blew themselves up at the shrine. At least 50 people died and 200 others were hurt in the blasts. This was the biggest attack on a Sufi shrine in Pakistan since 2001 which also clarifies the animosity of Taliban with all the religions. We got the opportunity to take the honour of his blessings and returned back to go for the final destination of the day, which was the Wahaga Border.

The Wagah border ceremony is a daily military practice that the security forces of India and Pakistan have jointly followed since 1959. This ceremony takes place every evening before sunset at the Wagah border, which as part of the Grand Trunk Road was the only road link between these two countries before the opening of the Aman Setu in Kashmir in 1999. The ceremony starts with a blustering parade by the soldiers from both the sides, and ends up in the perfectly coordinated lowering of the two nations' flags. It is called the beating retreat border ceremony on the international level. One infantryman (Jawan) stands at attention on each side of the gate. As the sun sets, the iron gates at the border are opened and the two flags are lowered simultaneously. The flags are folded and the ceremony ends with a retreat that involves a brusque handshake between soldiers from either side, followed by the closing of the gates again. The

spectacle of the ceremony attracts many visitors from both sides of the border, as well as international tourists.

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

After such an active day, I was starving and clearly evoked that I can’t go anywhere without having dinner, which had been accepted by everyone eventually. Mohsin took us to the most famous Chicken Tikka specialist in Lahore. The smell of spicy chicken grill took my starvation at heights. We ordered spicy Chicken Tikkas and Chicken Sajji which was really really testy and we could say that the chief really had done justice with the chicken and I’m fairly pleased to recommend them. After eating our food there had been a war between Mohsin and us for paying the bill. He cleverly informed to the waiter that we are the guest and amazingly the waiter became loyal and denied taking money from us. After returning back home I decided that we should leave for our next destination tonight which was ___ Kms away from Lahore. Everyone was really tired but some how I managed to get them on same point. We took our required luggage with us and left lest of in Lahore. Around 10 in the night we all were on Lahore Bus stop (Laari Adda) to leave for Murree. Finally we thanked our friend Mohsin for his time and all efforts he had done for us. While after we left Lahore in a high speed coach. Shakku was sitting with me while Jahanzeb and Zeeshan were sitting together on front seats. While sharing the one hands free and listening songs, we don’t know when we got snooze. The day was almost over but during the journey from Lahore to Murree, whenever I woke up, I realise that two drivers are in the race together and are driving like today is there last war. I was extremely tired and thought if our driver will win we

53

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

will see morning in Murree otherwise I will die tired and sleeping.

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

THE DAY THIRD When I opened my eyes I took little bit time to think about whether I am still dreaming or is this reality …? I was surrounded in the mountains; my eyes were taking time to recognise the sharp green colour of pine trees. I couldn’t believe on my eyes. Is it the heaven? Oh my God! We have got accident …! I’m in the heaven because of something good I have done…? Oh thank God, for blessing me. Oh everyone is in the heaven…? I’m jealous Ohh No, I’m still alive, look at that driver, at least he couldn’t be in the heaven. Yeah, I can feel the cold, its freezing. Hey, we are in Murree. Murree in the History Murree is a one of the most beautiful hill station and popular tourist destination located in the north-west Himalayas at an average altitude of 2,291 metres (7,516 ft) in Pakistan, which is a subdivision of Rawalpindi District. Murree is located along the Islamabad-Murree Highway, some 58.3 km (36.2 mi) northeast of Islamabad. The name Murree is derived from 'marhi', "high place".

56

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

Murree was the summer capital of the British Empire in the Punjab Province (British India). A, the city of Murree, draped in forests of pine, and oak, experiences pleasant summers and cold, snowy winters.

58

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

Murree was developed in 1851 by the (then) President of the Punjab Administrative Board, Sir Henry Lawrence, and was originally established for the British troops garrisoned on the Afghan frontier as a sanatorium. The permanent town of Murree was constructed at Sunny bank in 1853. The church was sanctified in May 1857, and the main road, Jinnah Road, formerly known as The Mall (and still commonly referred to as), was built. The most significant commercial establishments, the Post Office, general merchants with European goods, tailors and millinery, were established opposite the church.

59

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

Murree has also remained the summer headquarters of the Punjab Government in 1873 to1875. Lawrence College Ghora Gali), St. Denys' and Convent English schools for girls, Lady Roberts Home for invalid officers, Alliance Bank of Simla and Murree Brewery are the live evidence of British Empire. The coach was scrawling on the zigzag roads of Murree, It was Ghora Gali (Horse Street) when I woke up. I could see the bliss and delight on other fellows faces, although after a hectic day, long journey and uncomfortable sleep, there faces were blooming. The view from the window was amazing and we were just wishing to go out. The coach stopped at the bus stop which was little bit away from the main Murree Mall Road. The taxis took us to Mall Road and as it was expected, the driver stopped in front of a Hotel. He promised us that he will give us discount on the rooms because he has really good relations with the hotel management. Two of us went to see the room, it was quite nice room but when we asked the price he said Rs.7,000 per night. As we were expecting and warned by the other friends that he was dodging us for his pre-settled commission, we excused him and tried to find out some other economical rooms. I remember when we were on the Mall Road; agents were coming like the ants. We decided to have breakfast first and than look for the room. In breakfast we ordered one of the famous Omelettes and Paratha near the GPO, Mall Road.

60

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

After having first breakfast in Murree, we walked around the road and find a really nice hotel in just Rs.700 (£4.50) per night which was very cheap due to off peak time otherwise we couldn’t found any cheaper than Rs.1,500 (£10.00). I was about that clever driver who was pertaining to be really honest with us and tried to slaughtered us in just one go. As everyone was looking fresh and energetic, we decided to go outside; we put our stuff in the rooms and came back to the Mall Road to hire a taxi. We had planned that on first day we have to see Kashmir Point, Pathriyata and other areas which are relatively closer and on same route. As it was agreed that we could stop anywhere to get pictures we want to and we did exactly the same. Unfortunately, the worst thing we observed was the local people especially in Murree were very mean and dishonest. I really feel sorry to mention this which doesn’t involve everyone but very few we have observed. I think drivers are the most alive representative of any city you will visit and we found them really lying and dishonest and they have n their mind that people are coming to spend money and they are here to make some money not to show their hospitality. When we agreed to go for Pathriyata and vicinity, the driver tried to deceive us and said it would be better if you would go for other places which are at distance so that he could make more money in one go. Unfortunately miserable…..

61

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

It was the shining morning of ____, we were at Kashmir point and watching the amusing view of Kashmir Valley. They named it Kashmir point because you could see the view of Kashmir valley from here. We were at around 7,500 of height. We have to look down side to view the clouds and many times we had to wait for the clouds to clear the view for nice background picture. The Green mountains and pine trees were putting us in high spirits and feelings. The other tourist point there was the tour of train and the Governor house. A local Pathan boy was walking on the road with an eagle on his hand and asking people to have a picture wit his eagle. Jahanzeb argued since we got the opportunity to enjoy bit more. Everyone posed with the trained eagle while its sharp nails were discomforting us to stand steady. It was a good thing that the drivers were well trained and you don’t need to ask others if you are interested in group photos. Than we start moving towards Patriata which is also known as New Murree and situated 15 km south-east of Murree Hill and famous as one of the most beautiful tourist place. The road between Murree and Patriata was stunning and eyecatching and along with the road local people were selling different local products like scarves, blankets, honey jars, fruits and specially corn which is the most cultivated product in northern side of Pakistan. In one hour we reached the Pathriata hill station, the number of tourists enjoying there was indicating the importance of this point. Many colleges and university students were

62

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

grouped there and especially newly married couples were seen in quantity enjoying astonishing weather and miraculous scenery of Pathriata on their honeymoons. Although we were tired in the morning due to improper sleep we had last night in the bus but still the freshness in the air and blooming weather encroged us to forget tiredness and enjoy the moment as much as we can. We were ready for the next thrill Chair lifts etc…… When returning back to Murree the driver turned towards the Bhurban which is a small town and a hill station located approximately 9 kilometres from Murree city. The source of fame of Bhurban hill is due to a Pearl Continental five start hotel which has remained the staying points for all the foreign tourists coming from all over the world. The architecture of PC hotel itself has become centre point tourist’s interest and many tourists around the globe come to see and enjoy their holidays. We found many tourists camping there in the nights as there is no any fear of wild animals. While returning to Murree, we all were drowsy no one was speaking to other neither the tap was on and it was complete silence not only in the car but outside as well, after a while we heard a heart breaking voice of flute (bansuri) it was coming from somewhere in the hills, off course it was great to hear that instrumental music which apparently put us all into deep thoughts.

63

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

It’s again time to go back to hotel and take breath after another active day with full of enjoyment and amusement. I was starving, “I’ll eat Chicken Biryani”, I emphasised. “And me too...” added Jahanzeb. Shakku advised that he has noticed an offer named as “Karachi Biryani” on Mall road near GPO. We got fresh and went to restaurant for spicy chicken rice. After getting dinner we started walking on the Mall Road to enjoy the peak publish rush and to buy some warm jackets and jumpers for the remaining journey which was towards the glaciers of Kaghan. Luckily we got really economical jackets to cope with weather and returned back to hotel.

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

THE DAY FORTH A new day arises with a new hope to find new places on the land of God. Today I realised, how difficult is to survive in this room with four people and a single washroom, Grrrrrr. Finally I got my turn to get shower and when I came out they all are getting their bags ready for another smashing day. Everyone was agreed on this agenda that we are not hiring the same driver today. On the table of breakfast I placed the map which was clearly marked with the areas we are going to visit today. I have attached the same maps for the guidance of readers and you can also ask for maps and guidance from the offices of Ministry of tour and tourism or from their website www.tourism.gov.pk. Ministry of tour and tourism also provide complete packages with hotels and transportation but it might be costly than local transports and hotel by altering the level of standards. So after getting breakfast we are going again in the hell of bargaining. After speaking to couple of drivers we offered an old men by thinking that it would be his help and he was looking much sincerer than others. As I mentioned earlier, you can't trust on those drivers. We jumped into the car which was well decorated. Driver stopped the car right in front of GPO and went to pay his utility bill and we were staring each others. Everyone is excited to see the River Neelum and carried swimming costumes but suddenly driver stopped the car again and started his story. He was actually trying to misguide us and told us to go for other places which are more beautiful than but cost the double. He argued a lot and some of us agreed to listen to him and let him go where

66

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

he want us to go and we navigational changed the plan and agreed to him. One thing was really unbearable that since we are in the car he has not stopped just for a single second. He was speaking, speaking and making us wild. I personally felt headache in just 20 minutes of drive. "Uncle, could you please stop speaking... for God sake". I lost my tolerance. "Thank you Bhai (bro), I was near to jump out of the car" Shakku said and once again everyone starts laughing. Now we are going to see Nathia Gali, Thandiani and the waterfalls which would be in the way. I assumed, there is a huge waterfall along with some smaller ones in this area. Again the zigzag roads of KPK province amused us. The rang of greenery covered mountains, slightly cool weather, marching clouds, flying birds and revolving car around those hills were tremendous. We have seen so many dancing waterfalls which were giving an impression of milk-fall instead of waterfall. The mind was giving tribute to hard hands those were involved in cracking these mighty mountains and built such a silky and life-threatening roads which could not be less beautiful than any Hollywood heroin. Before Nathia Gali we stopped at a waterfall (Aab shaar) which is one of the largest waterfalls in all. An eye catching view was attracting us and we jumped in without any second thought in the mind. Aaaah...! this water was damn chill. We washed our hands and faces and drunk plenty of water which was naturally mineral and purest one. I thought I am the one who’s most excited but I saw Jahanzeb who climbed enough

67

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

and was standing on the top and was calling me to come and see another world. I couldn't understand him and started climbing. There was some sort of curving way in the mountain and I could only see limited view behind him. When I reached on the top I was speechless, I couldn't say anything, we were staring each other. Hurrrraaah.....! He exclaimed, "Subhan'Allah (Glorious is God)", I couldn't say anything else. Is it reality.. ? I have seen similar scene in a Hollywood fantasy movie Avatar but now I can see this in 4D.... It was not easy to believe on your eyes at that time. I don't want show in any picture because no one have invented a camera which can capture the nature into a canvas. Neither I have words to explain the beauty and pleasure which we have sensed there. We spent too much time and enjoyed each and every second of that and resumed our journey towards Nathia Gali. It didn't take too much time and we reached at Nathia Gali Bazaar. Nathia Gali is a hill station at 8200ft in Hazara, Abbottabad district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province. It is a part of the Galyat range, hiking tracks and pleasant weather, which is much cooler than the rest of the Galyat due to it being at a greater altitude. It is situated 34 kilometres at one hour's drive away from both Murree and Abbottabad, lying midway between these two places. It is forested with pine, cedar, oak walnut and also oak and maple trees. In winter snowfall adds to the scene. Nathia Gali boasts a nice church, St.

68

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

Matthew's, a remnant from the British period and made entirely of wood. It is situated at the edge of the mountain with a nice panorama towards Kashmir. Nathia Gali has a mini bazaar Mukshpuri and Miranjani are two nearby high peaks. On a clear day, the Nanga Parbat can been seen in the distance. I have no shame to say that I'm fond of food. And what else you could ask to God ? Tremendous weather, breathtaking scenery and marvellous food. Nathia Gali based world famous restaurant has been named number four in Pakistan and prominent for its "Blastic Chicken (Patakha Chicken)" and "Chicken with Secret Spices (Khufya masalon wali chicken)". While we were having spicy and tasteful chicken Karahi, it became cloudy and rain doubled the taste of food. After having lunch we started walking to enjoy the views and met local people of valley before we recommencing the journey towards the Thandiani and Aubiya.

Ayubia also referred as Ayubia National Park is around

26kms area at the height of 8,000 feet (2,400 m) located in Abbottabad district in KPK province and named after President late Muhammad Ayub Khan (1958-1969) who belonged to same area. Ayubia is surrounded by Nathia Gali, Thandiani and Khanspur and consist of four mini resorts Khaira Gali, Changla Gali, Khanspur and Ghora Dhaka. The Chairlift is a major attraction for domestic and International tourists. There are a number of rest houses and small hotels at the base station of the Chairlift. The top station

69

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

of the Chairlift also has a restaurant and couple of food and souvenir stalls. There are many birds, monkeys and leopards in this park, Now a zoo at Lalazar is established by wildlife department where you can see leopards, different kinds of birds in caves. The chairlift in Ayubia is not as long as one in Pathriata but it has its own charm and beauty. Both top and bas stations are now in worst situation of its time and clearly represent the mismanagement of Wild life Department, KPK and asking for the rehabilitation.

Thandiani literally means 'Very Cold' and we found really

cold as referred. The hills of Thandiani are about 9000 feet (2,750 m) above sea level and 31 kms from Abbottabad city in the foothills of Himalayas. Excellent weather, lush greenery in the summer months, snow-covered vistas and hills in the winter and many hiking tracks attracts tourist from all over the world. The local wildlife includes leopards, monkeys, several kinds of pheasants and the increasingly rare Flying squirrel and Pine Marten. Again ending of a gumptious day, we all are extremely tired and none of us had enough energy to go for the dinner. I asked to everyone about what did you really enjoyed today? And they started their stupid comments. I felt my head is getting heaver so went straight to the bed and said "Good night".

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

THE DAY FIFTH Good morning, today is our last day in Murree and we have to left this hotel forever, I am gazing at ceiling and thinking about the way to continue the journey. Till today we have travelled as per plan but now it seems little bit difficult for us. Everyone is bit nerves and too much confused. What we have done is we have asked to so many drivers to go with us Kaghan but the amount they have asked is too much and they will drop us in between somewhere and we have to take another jeep to reach Kaghan from there. Another cheaper way was to go via local transport from different cities which could be really timetaking and difficult. I called everyone to give their opinions and then we will be able to make further decision. In consensus we decided to go via local transport which would be more thrilling and adventurous but we will take the hurdles as a part of tour and nobody will blame for any discomfort. Meeting disbursed and we took our baggage, where I also found this diary to include you in this journey of life. We went straight to the office of Ministry of Tour and Tourism, Murree at Mall Road and asked for the guidance. They realised us that they are Government Officers but we avoided their goodwill in private business and took a taxi towards the Neelum Point which was the only spot we have left there. Neelum Point......

72

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

We are resuming our journey again, we come back to the station from where we could get public transport towards the Abbottabad. We got high accelerated van and got fixed on last 4 seats. In this whole short journey we all were giving ___ to that Uncle. I remember the name and even the registration number of that driver who seriously misguided us just for his small interest and we have to pass from the same route again but this time it was not as pleasant as it was before. We again passed that waterfall and Nathia Gali in public transport which was reminding us about him. The Government and specially the people they have influence there should take very serious action and need to educate them for the name and goodwill of not only themselves but the whole society as well which has become a black dot on the name of their hospitality and tradition which we have read in the books of history. After passing from Ayubia and Nathia Gali (Thandiani has another route from Nathia Gali) we reached Abbottabad. It was really hot and humid around mid day when we reached there and we were also noticing change in the weather after leaving Nathia Gali apparently. Abbottabad is one of the established city is this whole area established by Major James Abbott in 1853 and well known for its high standard educational institutions and military establishment. It is situated at the height of 1,260 m (4,134 feet) in the 50km north of Islamabad and 150km east of Peshawar city and at the border of Kashmir. The Love and beauty of this city can imagine the poem "Abbottabad" written by Major James Abbott when he was leaving this city. According to the

73

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

census 1998, 94.26% speak hindko out of 881,000 but I was really surprised to see people speaking Urdu (national language) in very clear accent. Due to the large number of students across the country this city has young demographics and literacy level is level is first in the KPK province. As we reached the city we have to take breath because zeeshan was feeling sick and we went in a restaurant for tea. Than we restarted our journey towards Mansehra which is considered as a hub and we have been guided by the officers in ministry of tours and tourism, Murree that we have to reach Mansehra then we would easily be able to go anywhere we wish to, so we were following the instructions blindly. It was heavy raining in the evening when we reached Mansehra.

Mansehra is district and a major stop for tourists on

the Karakoram Highway which leads to China. It is also a major transit point to the northern areas and locations such as the Kaghan Valley, Naran, Shogran, Lake Saiful Mulook and Babusar Top. This city has remained under the rule of various emperors and governments, including Alexander the Great, Ashoka the Great, the Afghans, the Turks and the British Empire. In 327 BC Alexander the Great conquered and established this city and then Great Ashoka remained governor and ruled this in 272 BC, after the fall of Durranis, Turkish and Hindu dynasties ruled the Mansehra and than in 14th century Muslim warrior Timur, in 15th century Prince Shahab-ud-Din, Mughals and then Raja Ranjeet Singh ruled here in 1818 and after his death Mansehra been controlled by British. Due to the facts of

74

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

history, there are many Brahmin Hindus. Mansehra rocks are listed under UNESCO world heritage 2011. We were tired and dizzy but somehow we reached at the main bus stop and they used to call it Lari Adda (mean Bus Stop). One thing really bump off our drowsiness and I whispered to Jahanzeb, "Is this place safe, you think?", "You are also thinking about same thing?" he responded. Four young guys in jeans and t-shirts walking along the roads of a city where you can't see any men except Khans and Afghans. "Are we in Pakistan or in Kabul?" Shakku asked. " I have no clue but I can suggest the only best thing we can do is to escape from here as soon as we can". I had seen many Hollywood movies based on CIA intervention in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iraq. At that time I had only one thing in my mind, If I would be kidnapped by extremists then what would be my first action. As we spend some more time on bus stop we realised that these are very common people although they look like other volatile people but they are really simple and honest. They speak the same language, they have the similar faces, they have the beard like them, they wear same style clothing but they are not the terrorists. Today I realised that appearance is not mirror of character and first impression should not be the last impression because it is not the way you see, it is the way you think. I was looking at the hardworking conductor Abdullah Khan who was collecting fares from the passengers and feeling shame in my own eyes that there was no any difference in me and those inspectors at Heathrow airport

75

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

those came to see my IDs because I was having an untrimmed small beard and they misconceived that I am a terrorist. I'm sorry Abdullah. We changed the van and reached to Balakot, "It's horrible night now and really dark due to loadshedding here in Balakot. We do not have any transport to go further. We might have to stay tonight, the only thing we have to do is to look for a reasonable hotel and take rest. We all are tired and drowsy, no one have enough energy to travel now." I diplomatically motivated them and told them all the bad news in tactful manner and they agreed. We walked through the road and found a hotel, I companied Jahanzeb to see the rooms and spontaneously we both refused to stay there and walked down the street. "How was the room?" Zeeshan asked tiredly. "Rubbish" I replied. Then Shakku stop an old men and asked for any better hotel and stranger clearly said that there isn't better than this. We went back to hotel and Jahanzeb said to manager that the price is high. I was looking at his face and thinking the how Rs.300 (ÂŁ2.0) could be higher for four guys to stay in a huge room? I could not stopped my laugh when manager said so easily, "OK, give me Rs.200 (ÂŁ1.5)". "You crazy.....? Why did you laugh?" asked Jahanzeb with evil smiling face. "Why did you say that Rs.200 is too much?" I replied and he said that what I could tell them that we couldn't find any hotel, really funny. The room assistant gave us one key, match box and a candle to alight in the absence of electricity.

76

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

We have never been there in Balakot, the only thing I 'm aware of it is the earthquake and the bomb blasts we have seen in the news. Aaah..! such relax I was felling when suddenly Jahanzeb called me to come outside in the balcony. "See the stars on the sky, how romantic, isn't it? "Mmmnn, yaar, I don't think these are stars", I confusingly said. "Stupid, these Are stars", he argued "Ahaha, see yours moving stars, you intelligent". I laughed and suddenly electricity switched in. These were the cars and we were in the valley surrounded by the mighty mountains and transport on that hill was appeared like the stars. We all are tired, dizzy and hungry, they have again scheduled their turns to go in washroom and I have got some time to write in my dairy. Luckily, we have got the restaurant on the ground floor and we will ask him about the transport as well. We ordered spicy brain, chick pea and nihari along with cold drinks and after eating a lot we all are surprised that bill is just Rs.300 (£2.0) amazing isn't it? You can't even think of curries, Naans and drinks for one person in this price in London and we are four young, hungry and excited guys.

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

THE DAY SIXTH A very nice sunny morning was approaching us to get ready for another adventurous day and we did so. While getting bath I was not sure that this could be the last place where we would have hot water. The places we will be viewing today would not have the facility of electricity and natural gas but off course we would be really close to nature. One thing we were really scared about that was the transport and the devastating weather which sometimes disconnects the rural masses from metropolis. To refuel ourselves we step down the restaurant we had dinner last night. Aleem Khan and his brothers were the only the one who have helped us while everyone have tried to slaughtered us otherwise. "So at that point, we have two options: one to go direct and second to go in an open van they way locals used to travel, which one would you guys prefer?" I asked for opinions "Which one will be the quicker?" Zeeshan did counter question. "Off course, the direct one". “I have a greater plan". I added "Why don't we go in open and roofless van to enjoy the weather, valleys and lush green hills and if you would like to enjoy more the best option would be to enjoy the way local people used to live there". "This sounds good", Jahanzeb agreed and so others. This is what I have learned from my daddy, if you have to mould a group of people then experiment on their leader first.

79

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

"But first we will look around the city, yeah?" I start walking to pretend that I do not need their endorsement. Balakot is a town of district Mansehra, 38kms in the northeast of Mansehra city and 72 kms from Abbottabad city, famous as gateway to Kaghan valley. The best attractive location in the town is river Kunhar which originated from Lake Lulusar and merges with River Jehlum, outside Muzaffarabad city in Azad Kashmir. This town was completely destroyed after earthquake on 8th Oct, 2005 and rebuilt by the UAE voluntarily. I have never ever realised that this small journey is going to become my lifetime journey and would affect the inner soul so deeply. We get into the van actually it was not a van but more an animal carrier vehicle that local people used to travel in. We decided not to sit on the seats but on the top head of the van. It was thrilling but along with it was astonishing as well. I could not imagine the nature. I have read so many places in the holy Quran to travel in the earth and judge what your God has created for you and thanks to Him. Today I was speechless, I don’t have words to explain, I know English is not my first language but believe me I can't even do this in my mother tongue. This is the only thing which really troubles me when writing and again I justify myself that God said himself that;

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

If all the trees on earth were pens, and the sea [were] ink, with seven [more] seas yet added to it, the words of God would not be exhausted: for, verily, God is almighty, wise. (Quran 31:27) Off course, I do not have words to explain even my own feelings that what I'm feeling when so much closer to the nature. What I'm doing is just staring.... staring to store all these landscapes in my eyes because I know we do not invented certain camera which can capture the nature in its pure shape. It is the time in this story when there is no background music, no any background noises, only thing we have is silence... the complete silence which alive your soul, which alive you in your own. This is the feeling which you cannot earn when get your wages at the end of the month. This is the spiritual degree which you cannot have in your 9 to 5 robotic and systematic fixed-scheduled life. Since Balakot was situated in the valley so the road from Balakot to Kaghan is in heightening order which makes this journey more thrilling and adventurous. At one side we have lush green hills and hundreds of waterfalls and on other side its complete miraculous view of Paradise and right under your nose it's a scary chasm of thousands of feet. Only single mistake of driver or misreading of other drivers coming from the front could result in the end of fun and you would be thousand feet downward into the river running faster than time and cooler than winter. 15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

THE SEVENTH DAY It’s a new morning with new hopes we woke up little bit later than usual due to the cold weather and felt little bit cold last night. As usual on breakfast table we were assessing the journey maps and trying to converting the distance in time according to our minuscule experience we have gained in last few days. Although, it was not sunny but delay helped us to travel in the warmer hours of the day. In the mid of the day we successfully reached the Naraan city. While approaching the city, the extremely freezing water of River Kunhar welcomed us warm heartedly and somehow we saw the few feet of flat land in this world of valleys and mountains. NARAAN VALLEY

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

Naran is a medium sized town in upper Kaghan Valley of District Mansehra in KPK province. Elevated 8,202 feet or 2,500 meters above sea level. Naran is one of the most scenic valleys in Pakistan attracting thousands of tourists, trekkers, photographers and nature-enthusiast, every year. The Kunhar River, swollen by glacier melt, passes through this town as it meanders its way through the valley. Naran is considered as base station to Lake Saiful Mulook, Ansu Lake, Lalazar, Babusar, Noori and Purbi Valley. Many hotels, motels and tents are available there at very economical prices for tourists to stay here. A clear view of Malka-Parbat (Queen of Mountains) can be seen from the top of the city. Other tracks originating and ending in Naran valley are - Noori Top - Dudipatsar Lake - Saral Lake - Ratti-Gali Lake (Lake is in AJK) - Sat-sar Mala Lakes - Gitidas - Lulusar Lake - Babusar Top

- Katha-sar Lake (Lake is in Kohistan) - Maheen Lake (Lake is in Kohistan) It was unbelievably absurd to see the prices of accommodation in this city where there is no electricity due to snow storm devastations which completely demolished the infrastructure of the district where it was almost impossible to endow with electricity which is the only source of energy. We are feeling lucky to have a huge 4 bed room in the heart of city in just Rs.450 (£3.0) and I was telling them that I remember that we had got about half of this room for £310 in Scotland which is nearly 300 times of this so imagine how lucky you are to be there in this time. We have to hike to reach Lake Saiful Malook which is around 12Kms from the city of Naran. There are two ways to go there either by hiking which will take more than 3 hours and billions of calories or you can hire a jeep which will take around 1 hour. You could easily imagine the trouble by listening about the jeeps. Yes, it is impossible for other vehicles to go up to the height of ____ by this type of track where there is no sign of any road what ever we have is the trail comes across due to the hiking of ambler tourists. Since we have never been there before we couldn’t compute the pain and vigour would be required for that for hiking so I did vote for climbing instead of sitting calmly in the jeep effortlessly.

We all were fresh and energetic so we took up small luggage with us and start walking down the road. At the point of beginning there was clear information about possible routes. In the start there was cemented road and we could see the government contractors we busy in building the road by flatting the hill track but soon after there was only stones and clatter of enthusiastic water of river Kunhar flowing along with the trail we were walking on. When we started we were with the river and by and by we left the river down the hills which converted this journey more thrilling and dangerous. Unavailability of medical aid, danger of falling down the hills extra ordinary fast and cold water of river tiring us before we could reach our destination. And we decided that we will have a rest when we will reach on the other side of this huge mountain. Finally, we cleared our first milestone. When we reached there we were surprised, a small group of international tourist were getting breath after a long trudge. This British group was consisting of Robert, Ana, Jack and Stefani under the supervision of Charles who was leading them from the day one. British Discussion

Saiful Mulook is one of the most beautiful Lakes in the

world situated at the altitude of 3,224 m (10,578 feet) above sea level. It is located 14kms from Naran in the north east of district Mansehra of KPK province. Lake Saiful Mulook was formed by glacial moraines that blocked the water of the stream passing through the valley. Water from multiple glaciers around

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

the lake feed it which gives it spectacular clarity with a slightly green tone. It’s around 1 hour trip from Naran to Lake which might take up to 4-6 hours by foot. There is also a similar named fictional story associated with the lake. A fairy tale called Saiful Mulook, written by the famous Sufi poet Mian Muhammad Bakhsh, is associated with the lake. It is the story of the prince of Persia who fell in love with a fairy princess at the lake. The impact of the lake beauty is of such extent that people believe that fairies come down to lake in full moon. "Hurrrraaah...!", Jahanzeb exclaimed "Finally, Huuuuh... we have reached our destination", He added. we all were excited, No one were able to say anything, words were difficult and heavy to come out. "Hey... Vicky we have done it, we really have done it Mate." Zeeshan cried out. "What a view.....", Shakku was completely shocked. "Truly amaaazing...." I had no words to record my delight. "Hey..... Hurrrraaah...... Yahooo...." everyone was exclaiming in his own way. I haven't seen them so much happy in my life after the examination of Matriculation. I was dying for this unexplainable joy on their faces. In fact I was after this unseen unstoppable laugh and they don't know that they were celebrating success of their travel whilst I was celebrating my

88

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

own success, Success to bring their childhood laughs on their faces and blot out their problems and agonizing burden of their responsibilities. It was my victory. On other side Charles' group new members were also surprised to this hidden beauty of nature. Ana and Stefani were jumping on their feet from far away. The tiredness in the crew was pulverised. We hugged and tried to steal this loving beauty of this part of the world in our cameras. I don't know whether Japan will be able to invent any capturing machine which could have an ability to save nature naturally or not ? We tried but we couldn't I'm sure no one can. We offered Charles to join us on tea and he accepted the offer without missing a single sec. It was evening and weather was getting colder. I was surprised when Charles told me to take traditional green tea which perfect for this weather condition. He had really sound knowledge of northern areas of Pakistan and was one of constant tourist visiting different areas in Pakistan since years. We took same traditional green tea and went closer to the lake which was reflecting like mirror and water was extraordinarily steady. One more important decision that we have to make there was to decide whether to stay night here or return back to Naran hill where we have kept our luggage in the hotel room. I tried to get the opinions of other fellows. It was a tie, Shakku and Zeeshan was saying to return back while remaing were

89

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

arguing to stay here. So I decided to get advice from Charles and check what they are deciding. Charles was very cleared on this issue he mentioned several times before. "If you are at Saiful Malook Lake and you are not viewing the early morning beauty of this Lady, you have seen nothing." He said. It was very bad lights at that time and we decided to stay tonight at the Lake but there was only question, "Cold". It was already negative temperature and there is no any hotel on the Lake to stay. The only way you can stay here is the Tent. But we were following our British guide. We got a relatively smaller tent than them and it was also at little bit difference but off course there was no one except us on this Lake. The tent owner provide us blankets and pillows properly and there was central fabric door in the middle of that door which also had one transparent window on the top for light. After getting settled in the tent we came out soon to spend some time along the bank of Lake. Two of us went for a walk and bring dry wood pieces for fire. We all were spending memorable night of our lives at the bank of Lake Saiful Malook in the minus temperature at the elevation of 10,578 feet and laughing without the care of the world. Romantic, isn't it ? Before sleeping, I was whispering to Sheikh "Mate, I haven't seen the God but I don't know why I feels that He is there somewhere close to me." and he said "you wanted to see the

ANSU LAKE Ansu Lake is one of the most beautiful lake in the world situated at the altitude of 13927 feet (4245 m) in Mansehra District of KPK Province in Himalayan range along with the Malka Parbat (Queen of mountains). The name "Ansoo" comes from its tear-like shape (the Urdu word Ansoo means teardrop). The lake also resembles a human eye with a central ice island resembling the iris and a ridge resembling an eyebrow, which becomes even more prominent when ice melts on the "eyebrow" during the summer. It takes more than 7 hours for a round trip to Ansoo Lake from Lake Saiful Mulook and the best time is in the morning otherwise it would be nearly impossible to return back. The path is completely covered with snow for most of the year except July till August. The trail is divided into two section; 7km walk from Lake Saiful Mulook to the base of Malka Barpat and then 4kms up the mountain with altitude of around 1000m. The best way to reach there is to hire a horse and a guide which is cost Rs.1500 to Rs.2000 (ÂŁ10.00-ÂŁ13.00)but again the remaining 4kms you still have to hike which is impossible for with the horse. So there is no any risk-free way to reach Ansu Lake. It is very risky to stay at the Lake as there is no any place to stay at night. LALAZAR Lalazar is a plateau known for beautiful wild flowers and soothing pine forests elevated at 10498 feet or 3200 meters.

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

This lush green meadow and fir forest is accessible by a jeep track from Naran via Battakundi. After Jalkhand there is a place where two rivers are getting parted and there is relatively small Lake, Payala Lake. There are some small towns of Purbi Nar and “Fazi Din ki Basti

LULUSAR Lulusar Lake, at 3,410 m (11,190 ft), is the primary headwaters of the Kunhar River. It flows southwest through the entire length of Kaghan Valley passing Jalkhand, Naran, Kaghan, Jared, Paras and Balakot until its confluence with the Jhelum River. Lulusar Lake marks the historic place where fifty-five participants of the 1857 Indian war of independence were arrested. The lake is much larger than other lakes in the Kaghan Valley and has mirror-like water reflecting the surrounding snowcapped Lulusar mountains creating a natural tourist attraction. In the summer many domestic and international visitors make the lake and Lulusar-Dudipatsar National Park a destination. From Gittidas east of the lake the Naran-Babusar road goes through the Babusar Pass, which is the highest point in the Kaghan Valley (el.4,173 m or 13,691 ft)), to the Karakoram Highway and mountaineering hub of Gilgit. From Naran Town the Naran-Babusar road ascends 48 kms (30 mi) northeast up Kaghan Valley to Basel, from where one reaches Lulusar Lake. Jeeps can be hired in

94

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

Naran for visiting the lake. A road is being built southeast around the lake which will link Naran and Basel to Chilas and the Karakoram Highway south of Gilgit. After Lulusar Lake at one point on the main NaranJalkhand-Chilas road there is another alternate route towards Chilas which is linking small towns with Chilas and going from River Kunhar tributary but we continued with the Jalkhand-Chilas main road. DUDIPATSAR/ DUDI PAT

Dudipatsar Lake also famous as Dudipat Lake

(Dudi=white, Pat= mountain, sar= lake) is encircled by snow clad peaks in Lulusar-Dudipatsar National Park. The lake lies in the extreme north of the Kaghan Valley, Mansehra District, KPK province of Pakistan at an elevation of 3,800 meters (12,500 ft). The word "Dudi" means white, "pat" means mountains and "sar" means lake. This name has been given to the lake because of the white color of snow at surrounding peaks. In summer the water of the lake reflects like a mirror. The lake's water is a beautiful greenish blue hue and very cold and the surrounding mountains, with snow patches in the shady dales, average around 4,800 meters (15,700 ft) in elevation. Their natural habitat is in the Western Himalayan alpine shrub and meadows ecoregion. The lake and its wetlands habitats are of significant ecological importance for resident fauna and migratory waterfowl. Some of the park's fauna includes the Snow leopard, Black bear, Marmot, Weasel,

95

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

Lynx, Leopard, Himalayan Snowcock, and the Snow Partridge. The lake and park is accessible for four months of the year from June to late September and we are lucky to visit in this period. In the summer, when the mirror-like water reflects the scenery, visitors from different regions of the country and from abroad travel to enjoy the enchanting views. The trail head for Dudipatsar is located at Besal, which is about an hour drive from the town of Naran. The road is accessible by cars and motorbikes. From Besal onwards visitors trek in vast alpine meadows to reach Dudiptsar Lake. The lake had an abundance of trout, but illegal fishing with dynamite and nets resulted in a sharp fish population decline. It is advised to not track it in snow, as it is an avalanche prone area. After enjoying surprising natural lanscapes at Dudipatsar Lake we left for the Chilas where we have to reach before the late night. We left Dudipatsat and passed from the Babusar Pass or sometimes also called Babusar Top which is highest point in this valley. BABUSAR PASS or Babusar Top (4173 m. or13,691 ft.) is a mountain pass at the north of the 150 km long Kaghan Valley connecting it via the Thak Nala with Chilas on the Karakoram Highway (KKH). It is the highest point in the Kaghan Valley with the height of 4173m or 13,691 feet. It's amazing view of Kaghan Valley at one side and Karakorum Highway on another side. We didn't stayed too longer there due to the shortage of time but it could be one of dream come true evening if having a cup of tea at Babusar

96

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

Top in the months between July to September which are the only months when you can enjoy the weather. After passing from highest point we reached at the "Eighth wonder of the World" The Karakorum Highway. Karakorum "Eighth Wonder of the World."

The Karakoram Highway (KKH) is the highest paved

international road in the world. It connects China and Pakistan across the Karakoram mountain range, through the Khunjerab Pass, at an elevation of 4,693 m/15,397 ft as confirmed by both SRTM and multiple GPS readings. It connects China's Xinjiang region with Pakistan's Gilgit– Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa KPK regions and also serves as a popular tourist attraction. Due to its high elevation and the difficult conditions in which it was constructed, it is referred to as the "Eighth Wonder of the World." The Karakorum Highway is known informally as the KKH, and Silk Road within Pakistan officially as the N-35 and within China, officially as China National Highway 314. It was nearly impossible to imagine the efforts and cost in creating this might flying highway in the heart of world's cruelest range of mountains. One cannot ideate about how someone have built this silky zigzag highway in that time of period . One who is admired of modern architecture should go and visit the KKH to view the hard work of chines and

Pakistanis laborers which is now become an Art in its own. At one point we viewed Indus River Tributary on KKH and after a extremely long journey we took a break and stopped the car at a tea stall in Thak Gah. We could imagine we are not far away from Chilas but now with set of sun our energy has also been decreased and we all are anxiously waiting to see some place to stay night and resume our journey again to Malam Jabba. Finally, after the longest continuous drive we reached city of Chilas. Mostly it is referred as town but I would prefer to say city which also have its own Airport as well.

Jamia Masjid, Colony Town, Airport

Chilas

is a small town located in the Province GilgitBaltistan of Pakistan on the left side of river Indus. It is part of the Silk Road connected by the Karakoram Highway which links it to Islamabad in the south via Dassu, Besham, Mansehra, Abbottabad and Haripur. In the north, Chilas is connected to the Chinese cities of Kashgar and Tashkurgan via Gilgit, Sust and the Khunjerab pass. There are more than 50,000 pieces of rock art (petro glyphs) and inscriptions all along the Karakoram Highway in Northern Areas of Pakistan that are concentrated at ten major sites between Hunza and Shatial, The ethnologist Karl Jettmar has tried to piece together the history of the area from various inscriptions and recorded his findings in "Rock carvings and Inscriptions in the Northern Areas of Pakistan" and the later 98

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

released "Between Gandhara and the Silk Roads -- Rock carvings along the Karakoram Highway". According to Dani, Kaboa or Kamboa of the inscription is a Kharoshthised form of Sanskrit Kamboja . Thus, it seems likely that Chilas also formed part of ancient Kamboja kingdom. Chilas comes under Gilgit-Baltistan and Foreigners may need permission to travel in Chilas.

Chilas is not an extremely famous tourist point we have been there because we were passing from here and to go further we have stay tonight here. We were waited in front of the Central Mosque of Chilas and one of us went in the high street to find any hotel to stay. After viewing couple of rooms we decided to move inside the Colony Town and after giving them a good reference finally we found a relatively nice and luxury hotel to rest tonight. Chilas' weather is relatively much colder than Kaghan valley and due to its geographical position language has also been impacted. People of Kashgar can been seen in the city and its vicinity gives an image of Chinese town. World's second largest mountain K2 can be seen easily when coming towards Chilas. We were travelling since early morning so it was not difficult for us to wait for sleep. Tomorrow we will have to continue our journey towards Saidu Sharif to see another astonishing resort in Northern areas of Pakistan.

With freezing cold of morning and hot tea Chhapra hotel we heard a bad news that we are having some problem with the car and driver is trying to repair it as soon as possible. It is one of our best luck that we are in a country like Pakistan where driver is comprehensive auto mechanic and used to have ability to repair and their vehicles themselves, even we have seen so many times on the road where one driver was trying to help out and repair others vehicle who was having trouble with that. When driver finished his work we asked from him if it is safe to drive and he confirmed without doubt. We resumed our journey again towards Islamabad and ride again on KKH and passing from small villages Sazi, Pani Pa, Dasu, and Pattan we reached Besham and then left KKH and took right towards Bar Kotkai and Malam Jabba via Alpuri village. From Bar Kotkai, Shangla Top it was one of hardest way to reach that resort.

MALAM JABBA

101

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

After one and a half hour we reached back to Besham (which was around 66kms) to take KKH again for Mansehra. In next one hour we were in Batgram which is around 55Km. And in another one hour and 70kms we reached Mansehra passing from small villages of Battal, Sharkah, Ahal, Icherian, Tanda, Bajna and Dhondial. Mansehra is around 188kms away from Malam Jabba and we have already spoke about this city since we are visiting it again. One of our friend was waiting for us on dinner and we were already too late so we decided to continue our journey towards the upper areas of Punjab. From Mansehra we return back to Balakot and without wasting too much time we keep driving. Abbottabad is the same city where operation Neptune Spear was carried out by CIA on May 2, 2011. One who is keen in International politics would be interested to see this city as well. So we continued our journey from Abbottabad and passed through Hawelian, Haripur, Hassan Abdal and reached Kamrah where we have to see one of our friend and stay tonight with him. It was around 145kms from Mansehra altogether. We were extremely exhausted because of travelling continuesly from getting up and travelled from all the way Chilas to Kamrah which is arround 600kms three provinces and more than 15 cities and 40 towns to meet one of our childhood friend who was waiting for us at the Kamrah Airbase. We have applied for the special permission

102

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

to stay inside here which is completely inaccessible for civilians and after hard struggle from our friend who was a high ranked officer they allowed us just to stay for one night in residential area where we would not be allowed to enter official cantonment premises. "Hey bro... it's been long time to see you buddy", He hugged me and exclaimed. "Yeah, almost 10 years.", I replied "Hey you look smarter than your Facebook photos", He articulated. "Hahahaha", I was laughing and reminding those days when we were together in the past. It seems like yesterday but 10 huge years have been passed. "Well, here is the ashes of your bad dream" He pointed his finger towards the Airbase and said. I smiled and said nothing because I knew what point he's trying to make here. It was one of my golden dream to join the Airforce and serve as a soldier for the nation but unfortunately my medical condition didn't allow me to be selected as one of them. This is why we planned to come all the way from Mansehra to see the life and lifestyles of these military man which was decided quite late and our host Captain also informed us bit late about the approval of our

103

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

accommodation request otherwise we could come from a bit shorter route of Mardan. He showed us rooms where we were staying that night. After getting shower one by one we were sitting together and watching news for the first time after a week and it was feeling like we have been disconnected with the world for so long. "I'm starving..." Jahanzeb cried. "Me too" Shakku contributed. "Yeah, I have ordered most famous Chicken Karahi for you guys and it would be ready now, let's move. " Military man ordered us. "What are we waiting for ?" "Let's go", I smiled and followed him. When we reached at the open air restaurant it was marvellous smell which was attracting us and off course we were also hungry as usual so decided to site near the kitchen room and let them bring the hot & fresh Naans without counting. We were accompanied by one of his best friend who was also same as his rank. Just to mention that there is slight difference in "Chicken Karahi" and "Chicken Curry" and it was Chicken Karahi

104

which is always without gravy. When waiter served it and Captain opened the dish cap, our excitement was doubled. "Mmmmmm... excellent", when Jahanzeb exclaimed it was mouth-watering moment for me and I didn't waste a single sec to test that dish and no doubt it was really amazing. After dinner we apologised Captain for inability to give him time tonight because of great tiredness. He realized our situation and promised us to show some souvenirs tomorrow morning. We crawl in the rooms there were sleeping mattresses on the floor and we lay down disorderly as we were not going to wake up anymore. "600kms, three provinces, more than 15 cities and 40 towns, it is not a world record ?" someone whispered. "Shshshsh.... Could you please shut up".

15 DAYS IN PARADISE The Journey of Life

In the end, you could say I named this book because I spend 15 days with my friends, friends those I could say the real friends. The friends of my bad time, But regretfully I lost them due to their responsibilities and work. I wanted them to return, return in the time when we became friends, return in time as it was in childhood, return without the reach of problems, sorrows, exertion and mobile phone, return without laptop, office work and pressure of Bosses or girlfriend. You could say I named this book because I have spent 15 days in one of the most beautiful part of the world. I haven’t seen the Paradise, I haven’t dreamt it and I’m very honest. But whatever I have felt there I would say that God has gifted a part of Paradise so that we can see it and believe Him. I have been there in England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Spain, France, Italy, Portugal and Switzerland but the way this Paradise inspired me it was miraculous. I was breathing before this tour but now I have started to live, I can say I’m alive now. I will feel extremely proud and fortunate if after reading this story you will be inspired and will plan to spend your next holiday to see if my Paradise could become yours as well or not. One thing is sure that you would found me there in the search of remaining natural beauty of my Paradise.
