TRADITIONAL BUILDING METHODS Traditional building methods used in the maldivian architecture are: 1. Thatched construction 2. Timber components 3. Marine structures. Since the locally available materials are the reasons behind the constrcution techniques, cocnut husk, palm leaves , palm wood and other locally available wood is what was used in maldives. Over the years the techniques and materials have changed. Now imported teak is also used. Rafters
Thatched Constrcution: Coconut thatching is the oldest form of roofing in the humid and tropical regions. Thatched roofs and wall provide goood insulation and reduced fungal growth.
Coconut thatching mats are laid in overlapping layers & tied to the horizontal members.
Timber is the second material used prominently in the maldivian architecture. The entire framing here is done with kapur wood.
Bamboo Sturts and coir rope
beam and rafter junction Elongated form and long windows
Bamboo is used here to provide the rafters a support. Coir rope is another very traditionally made element. Here it is used to bind the bamboos and also in some furniture element. To make coir ropes coconut husk is soaked, fiber extracted and dried. These strands are woven to form ropes of various thicknesses.

The intricacy here is seen in the detailed carvings done on the ceiling and the the backdrop of the spa reception. The same carving deatiles are done on the columns on the sides . These accompanies with the plane materials enhance the beauty of the workmanship.
The reception desk has a very intericate backdrop. The frames are brought togther and allow visual connection with the lobby of the back office. The table is also designed uniquely with stone and wooden carvings.
Unlike the use of fabric , carviings and embroidary works what also brings out the charcter of these deatails is the right tpe of lighting.
The lighting shown in the above images creates a very specific kind of mood and effect. In the image here the passage flooring is lit and not the ceiling while in the image above the ceiling is lit up and the rest of the space is flooded with natural light. Roll No: UI0217

GUEST CIRCULATION The open courtyard and water pond connects to all the 4 activity zones.
The folding doors when completely opened create an open plan while at the same time allow the space to be separate and used differently.
washrooms have an indirect access such that the they are not visivbile from the lobby.
The seating arragments are such that one can sit alone as well as in groups facing different directions.
The lobby provides different types of activities to the guests to spend time while waiting. 1.Book bar 2.Tea Lounge 3.Lobby lounge
The two paths, one for groups and other for individuals reduces the chances of too much crowd at the reception desks.
Outdoor tea lounge allows the guests to relax and enjoy the natures beauty while sipping a hot cup of tea.
The lift lobby right next to the entrance allows the guests to access rooms directly without much circulation.

INSPIRATION IN LIFE
INSPIRATION FROM SITE
Right from starting I have been inspired with the level of details I have seen in different types of embroidaries like zardosi. This is something that I saw in my mothers boutique right from a very young age. Every little detail in the zardosi patterns brings out its rich character. Nothing looks as beautiful as the motifs done with the right craftmanship.
The concept for this resort emerges from similar artforms. It is the culminaton of what I experienced at the site , in the local city and the regional culture.
Early influnces and observaions
River and tea gardens
Site context
The obeservation and appreciation for details increased with my travel experiences. Sun temple of Konark, Khajuraon temples etc.
Travel experinces
Old city of Ahmedbad, mosques , sarkhej roza
Native city and surroundings
All these little observation about textures, carvings , stories and narratives in those carvings have stayed back with me and that is what i have noticed extensively in arts and crafts of north bengal.
The art of paintings patachitra, budhhist scrolls, monastries and their vibrant colors, the conch shell carvings, the mask making art and the dokra art all have very detail oriented process and output. Roll No: UI0217

Regional context
Local context
The city and the local materials
The different art forms in this region are - Painting patachitra, dokra art, Maks making , conch shell art. All of these require great workmanship, details and each of these narrate different stories. These form the basis of my concept. Along with this other observations and factors include the the colonial influences from the darjeeling tea garden, the local materials, and the tropical climate of siliguri.

LEVELS OF INTRICACY
Entrance gate could have some amount of details but most of them being subtle only.
The details here is not just in how good the food is but what type of ambience is the guest being provided.
This is where anyone would want to relax and enjoy the peace. The use of heavy details hence could be only in the main circulation while the rooms are much more subtle.
Reception area is second place which creates a strong impression. The experince generated here is what creates a memory.
This space is used for more than one purpose and hence should be flexibe.
WHAT ARE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF INTICRACY? Every space has certain areas and elements where there is more inticrate work and hence it stands out and is highlighted. However, other elements in that space are not completely blend, these too have a very basic ornamentation.
Lighting will play a very significant role in the drive way and entrance gate. Lighitng in a restaurant can change the mood and the apperance of the food too.
Furniture and the common gathering spaces are the areas where inticracy can be incorporated.
water is a major element to create a calm feelnig. Not just in terms of cooling the temperature but the noise of water falling or flowing itself has a healing power.
Its the first thing that the guests will see and hence needs to create a memory, while at the same time reflect the meaning of the name vatika.
Beautiful view from entrance, sides and waiting lounge is an additional factor for good experiences.
Entrance / Arrival
Reception Lobby
Inticrate columns, volume and the use of vibrant colors with the dark wood and warm lights emhasizing the details in partitons , and tables creates an remarkable experience.
The furniture here is temporary but the structure is somethng which could be used for inticracy and also the lighitng fixtures.
This could be in its upholstery or the curtains. It could be in the furniture or in the flooring. Hence the amount of inticracy incorporated in different elemnets of any space determine the level of intricracy in that room.

TRANSLATION OF PAINTINGS IN SPACE - RESTAURANT AND BAR
UNFLODING THE STORY Since pattachitras are inspired from the hindu mythological stories, the basis for chosing Raas leela for bar and restaurant also has a strong mythological reasoning. Once after a huge celebration people of brindavav got tired and were resting which is when Lord krishna start playing his flute and suddenly everyone start enjoying and gets boosted with enregy such that they start dancing. All the gopis start dancnig aroung Lord krishna and this becomes and ritual. News of Raas Leela reaches Lord shiva who becomes curious of what must be happening there and why do all these women dance around Lord Krishna. He himslef being the God of dance Natraj, goes down to Brindavan to witness this dance of passion. Upon reaching there, he realises that only females are allowed and no male can be there in Raas Leela. This is when he dresses up and a female - shivakshi and witnesses Raas Leela himslef. The story simply tell us that the nature of celebration itself is feminine, and femine is all about exuberance and cheerfulnes. Its the very nature of it. Raas Leela is a depiction of celebration, happiness and excitement for which people usually visit parties, bars and restaurants. Hence this Painting was chosen. Roll No: UI0217

TRANSLATION OF PAINTINGS IN SPACE - VILLA
UNFLODING THE STORY It is said that during summer season, Lord Krishna along with Radha and other Gopikas would sail through Yamuna River in huge boats and enjoy the cool breeze. They would sing songs and seek pleasure and bessings of lord krishna. The painting narrates that story and the same idea is refoected in the villa where families would come to spend time enjoy each others company and enjoy the serne beauty the resort is surrounded with.
