Fall 2013
This book was meant to present my art and the art of my friends, and to show the reader the abilities that we developed in the short amount of time that we had to understand and use the software.

his graphic was created through the use of Adobe Illustrator. It was created through the use of irregular shapes and polygons, as well as tracing parts of

the original image to recreate the “feel” of the ocean. The ocean and sand were recreated through the use of shapes and polygons, and they are abstracts, rather than the exact copies of the original. The boat itself, however, is a tracing if the actual boat in the original image. I did the sand part first,
using multiple gradients and many different shades of color. The little tufts in the sand are actually polygons which I cloned, compressing or resizing them each time. The boat was then added in. It consists of one layer of polygons with smoothed edges. I simply used gradients and round anchors to
even out the boat, making it look better than the original that I traced it from. The original had grime and port holes that didn’t really add anything to the picture, or rather, took away from it. After all, this is supposed to be a simplification of reality, a cartoon, almost, it does not have ot portray the grim reality of aging and decay, in contrast to
the beauty of the ocean and sky. My attention is always drawn to the boat, as it is the most detailed and color imbued portion of the picture. I meant it this way, as it kind of makes me want to hop in and go for a ride.

I chose this project because of its simplicity and the message it conveys. It captures the simple beauty and elegance of the ocean, without the necessity of having to see every detail of the ocean or every grain of sand. It is the beauty of nature in simplyicity.

his graphic was remade using effects and brush types, using Adobe Illustrator. It was created using a certain type of Charcoal brush, to give it a cartoonish and unnatural feel. The ocean and sand look completely different than the original. The waves look like oil slicks and the tufts of sand look like they cast their own shadows all around them. The boat’s shadow appears to be a pool of metal or of some sort of residue from the boat itself. The unfortunate side effect of the brush was that the ocean now has three distinct parts, where I made the different parts of the coast meet. It still looks interesting though, regardless of the unusual look it gives. My attention is always drawn to the boat, as it is the most detailed and color imbued portion of the picture. I meant it this way, as it kind of makes me want to hop in and go for a ride. I chose this project because of its simplicity and the message it conveys. This graphic was remade using a different effect and brush type, using Adobe Illustrator. It was created using a certain type of Charcoal brush, to give it a cartoonish and unnatural feel. The ocean and sand look completely different than the original, or the previous variation. The waves look like metal pieces sticking out of the water, and the tufts of sand look like barricades from the movie “Saving Private Ryan”. The boat’s shadow appears to be a pool of metal or of some sort of residue from the boat itself. The boat looks almost ethereal, appearing as if it was fading out of reality and past the picture itself. This adds a whole another layer to what the boat represents, not only is it a recreational device as well as a method of transport, it is also a question, a problem one has to consider. My attention is always drawn to the boat, as it is the most detailed and color imbued portion of the picture. I meant it this way, as it kind of makes me want to hop in and go for a ride. his graphic was remade using effects and brush types, using Adobe Illustrator. It was created using a certain type of Charcoal brush, to give it a heavy, dense feel. The ocean and sand look completely different than the both the original and the other variants. The waves look like former shadows of themselves, and the tufts of sand look like their own shadows. The boat’s shadow is no longer visible, and is now a part of the boat itself. The unfortunate side effect of the brush was that everything starts to blend together, and look almost the same, or at least, part of the same part. The different parts of the waves, which are visible on the other variations, no longer exist on this one. the sand tufts are all one solid mass of whatever the rest of the picture is made from. My attention is always drawn to the boat, as it is the most detailed and color imbued portion of the picture. I meant it this way, as it kind of makes me want to hop in and go for a ride. his picture was made with a series of shapes in an attempt to recreate the original image. This is the first image I have ever made using this style. It was made through more or less tracing, and extensive use of layers. I began with the top part of the background and the coffee inside the cup, and worked my way down following the cup’s curve. i then proceeded with the rest of the cup’s body, and the saucer underneath it. The background was actually more difficult than it looks, as it was difficult to pick out the correct color for the wood grain and the wood itself. When I look at this image, I first notice the coffee inside the cup itself. I notice the reflection at the top of the coffee, and how it gradually fades into the shadow of the cup’s rim. Then what catches my attention is the light-play around the handle and the shadow of the cup. Adding the wood grain was something I did as soon as I saw that very few of my classmates did it. My aim with this drawing was attempting to recreate realism with the lack of art-expertise and knowledge of tools that I posessed at the time. For a first drawing, I think that it turned out pretty well, or at least, it turned out better than I expected.

his picture was made with a series of curved lines in an attempt to recreate the shading of the vessel. This was the last vessel I made. It was made using the brush tool alone, although the background was

made using layering if a series of brush strokes using the brush type “Spray-Paint”. On the picture, I started with the little leg on the left side, as that stood out to me the most. I then proceeded with filling in the left side of the cup, as that seemed to be more or less the same hue, making it easier to work with without having to change brush colors. I then worked my way counter-
clockwise, filling in a shades as I went along. This is the little cup that was on the cabinet at one point. I chose it because it stuck out the most, compared to the other cups there, due to its unusual base and shape.

his picture was made the same way as the picture on the left, although I began with the left side first, and attempted to concentrate more on the shading aspect of the project. This was the vessel I made
before the teacup on the left. It was also made using the brush tool alone, although the background was made using layering in a series of brush strokes using the brush type “Spray-Paint”. On the picture, I started with the spout on left side first, as that was the thing that stood out to me the most. I then proceeded with filling in the left side of the pot, gradually mimicking
the shades and reflections that were coming off the pot. I then worked my way towards the right, determining shades and descending values as they were on the original. This pot was presented to me during the “You have five minutes, draw as much as you can” challenge. Instead of doing the next vessel right after this one, I chose to finish this one from memory as best as I could.

his picture was a re-make of the teacup above, with a white background underneath and a blue one underneath that. The background was made using the brush tool alone, and I created asymmetrical rings around the cup in order to draw the viewer’s eye in. I used a very highly saturated blue at first, and
began to introduce different levels of white and of green to the color, until it became completely white. What I tried to accomplish through the modfying of the background was to achieve a similar effect to how the ocean looks, and how it achieves a form of depthness that, while you cannot see the individual layers, due to the water being transparent, you can see the depthness and the point where you can see less and less due to the light not reaching.

Version 2.0 _________________________________________ This is the same picture as the one above, although we were tasked with giving it a new background and theme, making it analogous to the previous image. This background was created through multiple strokes with different size brushes and slowly varying colors in a descending format. The teapot itself is unchanged, and was only temporarily removed for the background to be placed. The background was meant to add a feeling of the current season. Have you ever seen a sunrise or a sunset on a fall day? How there is a beautiful mixture of sunlight and orange from the falling leaves from the trees? This was meant to capture that beauty, through the use of a simply ceramic object and a fitting background.

The can was made through a larger number of vertical strokes of different light tones. I mostly used a 4pt brush tool. It was meant to capture the shades of light bouncing off an aluminum can. I started with the main body of it before I did the top. When I look, i see the cap first, due to it being “hollow. The body took the most time to get right, due to the different tones. This is an aluminum can, it had a logo, but i was unable to include it due to difficulties with shading. This was made through both vertical and diagonal strokes of a 3pt line. I started with the bottom first, due to it being the harder portion with curvature. I see the top first when I look at it because of the light variation. This is a cup.
