2019-2022

Hello, I am Abantika, a fourth year Architecture student from School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi. In my pursuit to understand what architecture truly means, I am always eager to learn new skills and perspectives.

These three years of academic experience have taught me a lot and I am looking forward to work and acquire more knowledge and experience architecture pratically.

DELUGE

MIXED-USE HIGH RISE BUILDING

Group of 2 Academic project

The intent is to reinterpret the human and outdoor connections that occur more naturally when living closer to the ground. The form is achieved by varying the floor slabs across the height the tower, based on criteria such as views, sunlight, and use.

SITE SPECIFICS

SITE AREA = 10655 sqm

USABLE AREA (REMOVING SETBACKS) = 5583 sqm

FAR = 3.5

TOTAL PERMISSIBLE FLOOR AREA = 37292 sqm

GC = 60%

VISUAL CONNECTIVITY

Ease of views reduces with lower levels. Hence, landscaping on lower levels has been incorporated for visual connectivity.

SOCIAL INTERACTION

Additional terrace spaces have been incorporated in the office as well as residential areas to encourage interaction and exchange of ideas.

LANDSCAPING

A connectivity with nature has been established by incorporation of terrace gardens on multiple levels using the existing form of the building.

PASSIVE STRATEGY

Various cantilevers within the form allow the winter sun to enter and block the summer sun, helping in climate control.

The intent is to reinterpret the human and outdoor connections that occur more naturally when living closer to the ground. The form is achieved by varying the floor slabs across the height the tower, based on criteria such as views, sunlight, and use. The creation of these floor plates allow very generous outdoor spaces. Through iterations we realised that the exterior spaces of the building are potentially great social spaces. Stage - 1 Stage - 2 Stage - 3 Stage - 4 Stage - 5

MEDITATION CENTRE

Group of 2 Competition entry - honorable mention

Architecture affects our thoughts, cognitive abilities and our emotions. Given the physical nature of the built environment, it would be easy to assume that the visual qualities of spaces dominate our perception of a building. While designing this meditation centre, our attempt was to stimulate more than just the visual sense.

Foyer Services

As the user gradually interacts with the casual interplay of built and semi built meditation spaces and open bamboo trail, all the senses accentuate gradually. Capturing how things actually feel, smell and even sound become a callous process and hence the time spent at this centre becomes a deeper collective experience. Considering all these senses further trigger feelings such as coziness, warmth, comfort and surprise.

CRAFTS CENTER Individual Academic project

The complex is composed with forms that respond and open up to the existing trees, and all the voids in plan are integrated with landscapes to enhance work experience.

The intent is to break the conventional model of small craft spaces and create a space that fosters innovation, collaboration and productivity.

SITE SPECIFICS SITE CONDITIONS

SITE: National Gandhi Museum, Opp. Raj Ghat, Jawaharlal Nehru Marg, New Delhi, Delhi 110002

SITE AREA: 10115sqm

CLIMATE: an overlap between monsoon-influenced humid subtropical and semi-arid, with high variation between summer and winter temperatures and precipitation.

WIND DIRECTION: North-North West

CONCEPT

The core could be compared to an agora or marketplace in old towns. It is the point where all paths cross to create a maximum of social interaction.

Radial growth patterns depend on the establishment of a strong central core. Secondary elements connect directly with the core at one end, providing close contact with the centre and with the other elements. The other end of each element projects into the landscape and has a sense of detachment from the whole complex.

The axial type of expansion at the outer ends is possible without disrupting the life at the centre.

CONNECTIVITY

The site is a corner plot at the junction of Jawaharlal Nehru Marg, Satyagraha Marg and Mahatma Gandhi Marg, all of which contribute to a heavy road traffic. CONTEXT

The site is within a cluster heritage buildings and sites of national importance.

EXISTING BUILDINGS

National Gandhi Museum and Library. Proposal is to relocate.

EXISTING TREES

The site consists of 64 trees. Proposal is to maintain 90% of them.

SITE OVERALL

SITE PLAN

Various functional nodes have been created by clustering relevant activities together with a centralized courtyard in each.

These nodes are bridged up by strong regulating circulation patterns.

CABIN DESIGN Individual Competition entry

The design of these cabins not only endures minimal aesthetics but is also attached to Nordic lifestyle and the value of a healthy work-life balance. The attempt was to create beautiful and minimal remote cabins that allow people to connect with nature and embrace outdoor living.

04

SITE: California

SITE AREA: varies from 25sqm to 150sqm

CLIMATE: Mediterranean-like climate with warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters.

DESIGN IDEATION

The prefab units are designed to be used to form vacation homes, guest accommodations, or extra space in a back yard. The compact layout fits one bedroom and a bathroom, an open-plan living room and dining room, and a galley kitchen.

A number of space-saving elements are included allow the occupants to maximise the tight quarters. Storage is available under the bed, for example, as well as inside a built-in bench along one wall of the living room.

The modular concept allows for flexible living. 1, 2, 3 or 4-bed combinations with additional ‘add-ons’ including outdoor showers and saunas. Thinking about each living space as a separate design exercise has allowed to create unique experiences in each space.

Throughout the buildings, expansive concealed storage walls maximize floor space and maintain a clean aesthetic. Space is flooded by natural light, cozy nooks, and generous bespoke window seats, maximizing use of space whilst connecting the user to the outside world. Although working with a relatively small footprint, the tall diagonal ridge opens up the spaces dramatically.
