The NEWTON RANGE

New

Since its launch the NEWTON harness has become a benchmark for quality and design. This year Petzl move that benchmark higher with the launch of an updated NEWTON range. What remains is the anatomical design and ease of donning that makes the NEWTON so popular; the colour coded top and bottom sections, the ergonomic buckle positioning and the cool, vented jacket option. What is new is pretty much the rest!  

 

Soft sternal attachment points with protective sleeving An additional FAST harness front closure, removing the need for a metallic connector in the sternal attachments when using the dorsal point Updated FAST buckles with the locking and adjustment systems separated, making a slimmer, less intrusive unit A JAK version, now called the EASYFIT, with padded areas for increased comfort and protection

This new NEWTON range also includes INTERNATIONAL versions, additionally certified according to North American standards. The INTERNATIONAL harnesses feature ergonomic storage of MGO lanyard hooks with releasable parking points as well as ‘tell-tale’ fall indicators.

The VOLT WIND

New

Petzl have extended their professional harness range by introducing a harness dedicated to the energy and telecommunication markets. The Petzl VOLT comes in two models, each tailored specifically to an industry sector. The VOLT for power transmission towers, the VOLT SEAT for telecommunications structures and the VOLT WIND for wind turbines. At the core of each model is a completely new EASYFIT design of fall arrest harness, enabling straightforward and rapid donning with the help of the latest Petzl FAST buckle. This design gives excellent support and enables comfortable progression with rigid rail fall arrest systems. In the event of a fall the ventral attachment, ideally placed whilst climbing, repositions by the release of load sensitive stitching, placing the wearer in a more comfortable, upright position. If attached to one of the other rated attachment points, fall indicators give a clear ‘tell-tale’ of a fall, requiring removal of the harness from service. Combine these features with carefully positioned back and lumbar padding, foldable lateral attachment points and ergonomic storage of lanyard hooks on ‘break-away’ parking points and the VOLT WIND adds up to a harness worthy of the Petzl brand.

The PANGA

PANGA is the new, durable, easy to use helmet, designed for group and club use. PANGA is composed of three removable components: a rugged ABS shell, an expanded polypropylene liner for excellent wear resistance and a ‘one size’ harness/headband. All three parts are available as user replaceable parts extending lifetime and optimizing cost for the operator. The FLIP&FIT cradle system enables the headband to be retracted inside the helmet, to protect it during storage and transport. When the helmet is put on, the headband is immediately positioned in the low position, without needing to adjust the length, ensuring a secure fit on the head. Adjustment of the headband is by a simple drawcord which may be easily adjusted by an instructor, or by the wearer. The MICROFLIP

New

Petzl have expanded their technical tree care offer with an adjustable steel wire-core lanyard system. Often termed ‘flip lines’, wire cored lanyards are used where there is a risk of damaging a textile item from tool strikes, such as when dismantling a tree trunk and working close to the anchorage with the saw. The new MICROFLIP system is designed to be used in double mode, connected to the lateral points of the work positioning harness. One end of the over-braided flexible wire is secured to one attachment point with the users’ connector, perhaps via the accessory MICRO SWIVEL to ensure perfect alignment, with the other end fed through the pre-fitted MICROGRAB rope adjuster which is linked to the opposite lateral attachment point. The MICROGRAB cam trigger is specially shaped for intuitive handling and to facilitate quick and smooth length adjustment when unloaded. The rippled cam profile ensures a positive grip on the wire cored lanyard when load is applied, even in wet conditions. The MICROFLIP lanyard system comes in 2.5, 4 and 5.5 metre length options, with replacement wire lanyards in each length available separately.

All of the new ABSORBICA assembled lanyards are fitted with a low volume tear web pack with a progressive deployment specifically adapted to different user weights. What does this mean? EXO - Emergency Escape EXO and EXO EASHOOK Following a tragic accident in 2005, the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) wanted to equip each firefighter with an individual system of protection, allowing emergency self-evacuation from a burning building. To do this, the FDNY conducted a very specific study of their needs. Over forty technical solutions were proposed and more than 5000 tests were carried out in their training centres. During this study, the FDNY approached Petzl to request the development of a device based on the GRIGRI and to fine-tune a new emergency evacuation technique. The EXO was the result of this association of experts and is now carried by all of New York’s firefighters. This system allows each firefighter to quickly escape a burning building, with a high level of safety.

The RESCUCENDER

New

The Petzl RESCUCENDER has been a stalwart of the range for 18 years and has a huge following within the Emergency Services globally; so to announce its retirement and replacement with an all-new design is a big event. Designed right from the start for use in haul systems, the new version had to be rope friendly at high loads, easy to install and remove whatever the situation and require the minimum of retraining for existing users. Key to this new RESCUCENDER is the ingenious ‘captive cam’, mounted not on a wire but a stainless steel sliding arm. This allows the cam to move clear of the body to allow rope loading, but keeps the cam orientated correctly and makes it easy to slide back in and lock securely. Gone also is the small cam-locking pin, replaced with two glove friendly safety catches on each side of the body. These catches act directly on the main cam, blocking its route through the alloy body of the RESCUCENDER. A large volume connection eye, enabling connector barrels to rotate through with ease, completes what is a very well thought out package which is sure to be welcomed by all technical users.

The ROLLCLIP

New

Designed for a multitude of applications, the new Petzl ROLLCLIP models combine the efficiency of a pulley with the ease of clipping a carabiner. The ROLLCLIP has the pulley wheel of the MINI pulley, but with extended and reshaped side plates to create a large volume frame with built-in closure system. This eliminates the need for a secondary connector and reduces the overall height to a convenient size. Reducing friction at a rope redirect or perhaps part of an emergency hauling system in water rescue; once you have one you are going to find more and more uses for the ROLLCLIP. A neat example of use is when linked into a handled ascender to create some mechanical advantage when doing a short ascent. The high quality pulley wheel with ball bearings gives the best return on your effort, with the bonus of the compact height allowing a bit more travel before resetting. Once in position, the gate orientation enables easy and rapid installation of the rope, with a key lock nose further reducing the chance of snagging. The ROLLCLIP is available with or without a gate locking system depending on user application. The COEUR & BOLT

New

Even the humble hanger plate gets an upgrade this year and in doing so goes a long way to solving the technical issues that have arisen as work at height techniques develop. Realising that people use hanger plates and bolts for a massive range of applications and in widely differing environments, Petzl have overhauled the COEUR shape and produced it, and its attachment bolt, in a range of materials. For applications in low corrosion environments or where use is of limited duration, the COEUR STEEL hanger is made in a plain, untreated steel. For more general applications in what might be termed ‘normal’ outdoor environments, the COEUR STAINLESS hanger is made in high quality 316L stainless steel, as have previous models of COEUR hanger plates over the years. Where the environment may be less pleasant and damage to a ‘standard’ stainless steel item is of concern, the new COEUR HCR hanger will come into its own. Made from HCR 904 (High Corrosion Resistance) stainless steel, this version aims to address many of the corrosion issues faced in more extreme locations. Regardless of material, all COEUR hanger plates now feature a revised profile for easy clipping and reduced connector wear. They also incorporate an anti-rotation system to help maintain correct orientation when installing and in use. To complement each COEUR hanger plate, a bolt of matching material is available; either pre-fitted (COEUR BOLT STEEL/STAINLESS/HCR) or as a stand-alone item (BOLT - STEEL/STAINLESS/HCR).

AbbreviaƟons & Glossary CE

The CE mark against a product in this price list confirms that the product complies with a European Directive. Please note that the CE mark is applied to many products which are not Personal Protective Equipment (e.g. children’s toys). For most cases this is the PPE Directive (89 / 686 / EEC).

European Norm (or standard). These norms replace the relevant national standards of member states of the European Community. ENs are referred to when assessing whether a product may have the CE mark affixed.

prEN

A provisional, or preparatory, EN, yet to be finalised. Levels of revision are dated.

PPE

Personal Protective Equipment.

Dynamic

Used to describe rope which is designed to absorb and dissipate the energy of shock loads from large falls (up to fall factor 2).

Low stretch

Used to describe ropes which are not designed to withstand falls greater than fall factor one. They do have some ability to absorb shock loads.

Fall Factor

A figure indicating the relative severity of a fall. It is obtained by dividing the total length of the fall by the length of rope holding the fall.

kilonewtons. One thousand Newtons (see below).

Newton. This is the international unit of force. 9.81 N is the force required to suspend a mass of 1 kg under the force of gravity. It is commonly approximated to 10 N. (In common parlance 1 kg = 10 N).

Breaking load. See MBL

MBL

Minimum Breaking Load. The minimum load at which an item of equipment can fail when it is new.

WLL

Working Load Limit. The maximum load (as determined by the manufacturer) that an item of equipment is designed to raise, lower or suspend.

SWL

Safe Working Load. The maximum load (as certified by a competent person) which an item of equipment may raise, lower or suspend under particular service conditions. The SWL can be lower than the WLL, or greater than it.

FOS

Factor of safety. The relationship between the MBL is divided by a factor to arrive at the SWL or WLL. This provides a “safety buffer” between safe use and failure. The FOS is expressed as a ratio, e.g. 10 : 1.

Proof load. A predetermined load, generally a multiple of the service load, to which a specimen or structure is subjected before acceptance.
