At the beggining of project one, i decided that i would like to make a magazine. The theme of this magazine would be how today’s music and fashion is influenced by the 1960’s. I wanted to collaborate with stylists and take photographs for the content. My idea was to research bands who have a clear influence from the 1960’s within both their sound and their band image. I looked at artists such as Novella, Melody’s Echo Chamber and French Kissing. I also planned to work with music reviwers to help towards album reviews / gig reviews etc. When I started to shoot for the magazine, i found locations in Elephant & Castle for the photographs. As i started to explore photography, my ideas started to slowly evolve. After listening to my tutor’s advice and feedback, I realised focusing on my photography skills and not worrying too much about the whole 1960’s theme, was a better idea and so this is where I decided to make a book which shows my skills as a photographer. As my test shoots were all photographs of girls, I carried on with this theme and took photographs of girls around London.

at this stage of my thoughts, i decided to start including the research and music knowledge of bands inspired by the sounds of the 1960’s. I contacted some london based bands such as novella and arthur gun, and looked at international bands for example Pond and Melody’s echo chamber, both bands influenced by the psychedelic sounds from this era. as my magazine would be for an audience who love both music and fashion, the music side is important and my intentions were to take photographs of bands as well as get an insight of where they gathered their personal inspiration for the bands image and sound.

Hi Abbie. Thank you for your email. Do you have a website for the magazine? We are currently getting prepare to record our upcoming album and it would be great to get some pictures done. Let me know about the site. Thanks, Suki

Brianne Wallis for Girls on Film Zine. In these photographs she shot some of her ‘favourite girls’, i like the idea of this as it is personal

I found that in this shoot the more posey photos were unsuccessful, there are a lot of images from this shoot that i did not like but I managed to capture a few natural shots of merle looking around etc. which seem to be more successful. I really love the colours in the background of this shoot, it would be nice to add a pop of colour maybe next time. This could work with lipstick or just a small accessory to add bright colour. the tones are all very similar

i photographed rona outside of her flat by commercial street in shoreditch. she is wearing her own clothes and had been to castings in the morning.i was speaking to her whilst shooting because i wanted to try and maybe capture a few natural shots but she was very aware and knew when i was going to press the shutter so kept a straight face for most images. i do prefer the darker photographs from this shoot. something i’ve 100% learnt throughout this project - NO SUNLIGHT.

i photographed lucille in camden, where she works. this was on her hour break during work. as it was getting later in the day the sun was setting and not shining too much in the background which i think makes the quality much better when there is little sunlight. i really love how natural lucille was infront of the camera and we were just chatting as i took photographs and i got some really lovely images just from doing this. it’s definitely taught me a new technique and way of working. just to capture someone how they are is a much better way as apposed to standing there with no expression. there wasn’t really many unsuccesful images from this shoot, apart from a few where i cought a hideous poster in the background. even the slightly out of focused images created a nice effect to the story. this has showed me not to worry too much about focusing during shoots, to make things a bit more interesting.
