APD officer accused of corruption

It’s not the end but a metamorphosis for Murdoch’s Bookshoppe, said owner Brian Murdoch, who’s closing the store after 20 years on Mission’s First Avenue to operate a web-based book business from home. It will still be the place to go for rare, cool books. For complete story, see page A18.

n Abbotsford Police officer accused of helping a drug dealer avoid arrest has been criminally charged and suspended. Const. Christopher Nicholson was charged with conspiracy to traffic drugs, had his badge seized and was suspended, according to statements made by Abbotsford Police Chief Bob Rich and Vancouver Police Chief Jim Chu at a press conference Tuesday morning. In August, the Abbotsford force asked Vancouver Police Department to launch an investigation into Nicholson after two APD officers got information in July that Nicholson allegedly leaked information to a local suspect so he could escape arrest. The VPD launched a covert operation in September that involved dozens of officers – some who were gang and homicide investigators – who believed Nicholson was feeding false information see CHARGES, page A5

special anti-gang police team uncovered four sophisticated marijuana grow operations worth millions that included a vast underground greenhouse hidden by a paddock and a high-end doghouse in the Hatzic Valley area east of Mission. On Friday, officers with the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of British Columbia (CFSEU-BC) executed search warrants, confiscating up 10,000 marijuana plants and expensive equipment from four rural

and remote properties. The sites are in the 10000block and 14000-block Sylvester Road, 12000-block Dewdney Trunk Road, and 13000-block De Graff Road. Police seized live plants ranging from seedlings to mature plants several feet tall and in bud, plus 200 pounds of dried marijuana, estimated to worth between $5 million and $10 million. Another $1 million worth of equipment and $20,000 cash were also seized. “We received a tip several months ago, and we believe that’s how long (the growops) have been in place,

since about the beginning of the year,” said Sgt. Lindsey Houghton, CFSEU-BC’s spokesperson. “Ex p e r i e n c e d o f f i c e r s describe it as one of the most sophisticated grow-ops they have ever seen.” Police believe the grow-ops are linked to the Hells Angels motorcycle gang. The operators installed the latest technology and “extremely high levels of security” to conceal them from police as well as rivals who may want to steal the goods, said Houghton. The De Graff Road grow-op is an underground bunker that officers first thought was

a horse stable and paddock but was “in effect, just a movie set,” he said. The hatch was hidden under straw bales in the barn. “A fake dog house made out of beautiful wood” and a fire pit camouflaged the venting for the underground operation. Each site was operated by a natural gas generator worth an estimated $100,000 each and “capable of providing power to a small town.” These were removed by a large crane. Officers are still counting see MARIJUANA, page A10

Abbotsford Mission Times asked candidates in four local ridings to respond to the following: What do you see as the 2 – 3 most important issues in your riding? What would you do about it? We’ll run the responses over four issues. This is Part 4. You can see their profiles at www.abbotsfordtimes.com.

H

ealth care: After the 2009 election, Mission residents were startled when BC Liberals said they would close Mission Memorial Hospital’s emergency ward. The Liberals backed down after massive protests, but concerns remain about the longterm sustainability of health care in the Fraser Valley, as well as ongoing long wait times. An NDP government would free up acute care hospital beds by providing more home care for seniors and others with chronic disabilities. We would increase residential care for seniors and work hard to reduce the cost of pharmaceutical drugs, which are becoming a bigger part of modern health care and a serious cost concern for patients. Transportation and public transit: Getting around the Lower Mainland has become more difficult and costly in the last 10 years with toll bridges and inadequate public transit. The NDP would use carbon tax revenue to expand public transit, including the West Coast Express. We would also work for a bus route linking Mission with Maple Ridge. Education: Most future jobs will require more than a high school education, whether it is trades’ apprenticeships or college degrees. An NDP government will significantly increase affordable postsecondary education to increase opportunities for our young people. Contact Mike Bocking at 603-3803899 or at mike.bocking@bcndp.ca

conomic development is essential for local employment opportunities, revenues and the environment by reducing commuter travel. I will continue to work collaboratively in Mission and Maple Ridge on these issues. Recently I announced funding for road construction leading to a proposed Tim Hortons Children’s’ Camp and significant tourism and recreational opportunities. Transportation and highway improvements are important issues that I will work on: on-going fourlaning of Highway 7, improved West Coast Express service and transit between Maple Ridge and Mission. As a former public school teacher, education is central in my mind. A BC Liberal government will provide the foundation for economic growth by controlling spending, keeping taxes down and encouraging the expansion of liquefied natural gas, mining and other sectors of our economy to provide revenues needed for education, health and infrastructure. As an MLA, I was the Parliamentary Secretary for Independent Schools and served on various committees including finance and Families First. I was born in Germany in a RCAF home and grew up in remote radar bases across Canada. I served in the Canadian Forces Reserves. I am Métis and have been married to Marlene for 28 years. Home invaders tie up seniors and steal guns

A

n elderly Abbotsford couple suffered minor injuries after a trio of home invaders broke into their house and stole a cache of firearms on Tuesday afternoon. Three masked men in gloves and dark clothing broke into a rural home in the 28000 block of Starr Road at 2:30 p.m., said Const. Ian MacDonald. The suspects, one reportedly armed with a metal

A

s a regular cyclist and occasional transit user, sustainable transportation is an important issue to me and, as a parent of three schoolage children, I see the importance of improving our education system to effectively prepare our kids for their future. Most importantly, we can’t finance these investments using debt. Both Maple Ridge and Mission, like many B.C. communities, are starting to make some small improvements for pedestrians and cyclists in spite of very limited funding. Unfortunately the same can’t be said about transit. In the past few months, Maple Ridge citizens had to step up and speak out so that Translink wouldn’t reduce what little bus service we have. In the Albion area, we are several years overdue in having a new school built. As more young families move to the area, the need for a solution is becoming more critical. Meanwhile our school board is struggling to find ways to trim their budget yet again without significantly impacting the quality of our children’s education. The Green Party of BC is committed to solving these problems and more in a fiscally responsible manner, without mortgaging our children’s future. bar, tied up the husband and wife, both in their 70s, and began searching the home. The robbers ultimately stole nine firearms – a combination of handguns and long guns – and a large quantity of ammunition, said MacDonald. The couple freed themselves after the suspects fled and then called police. The victims were taken to hospital for treatment of minor abrasions and bruises. All the guns were legally registered, said MacDonald. Nothing other than the weapons were taken from

I

f elected as the MLA for Maple Ridge-Mission, I would be completely committed to representing my constituents. For too long, we have seen issues that matter to this riding go ignored in the legislature. In my opinion, the two biggest issues facing our community lie in transit and education. Specific to transit, we need to ensure that the governance of TransLink is held accountable to the people. As Maple Ridge-Mission is an outlying community, we need our government to do more to ensure that people have access to transit when they need it. The other issue that I view as being incredibly important has to do with the construction and upkeep of schools. New neighbourhoods have been popping up around the constituency, but our infrastructure has not kept pace. As an MLA, I would advocate for this community and its children; we need more schools. Ensuring that young people are educated in the best possible system is fundamental to the BC Conservative platform. We need to ensure that community infrastructure meets community needs. the home. “It certainly suggests the suspects knew the firearms would be there,” said MacDonald. “But until we catch them, it would difficult to say what they knew beforehand and how they came to be there.” There is nothing in the background of the couple or the residence that would suggest they would be targeted by home invaders, he said. Anyone with information about the incident should call APD at 604-859-5225, text to 222973 or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

bbotsford Police must review scores of criminal files after Tuesday’s announcement that an APD officer is facing criminal charges for helping a drug dealer avoid arrest. Const. Christopher Nicholson, charged with conspiracy to traffic drugs, breach of trust and obstruction of justice, has had his badge seized and is suspended from the force. Suspected of feeding false information to fellow drug squad officers who relied on it to obtain search warrants, Nicholson also allegedly conspired with a confidential informant to have drugs planted in a home, with other police officers conducting a search warrant soon after. Abbotsford Police Chief Bob Rich told The Times Tuesday he was horrified to learn of the situation and the potential implications on the justice process and the use of confidential informants. The information Nicholson has provided over the years has assisted in obtaining dozens of search warrants to residences of drug dealers and gang members, said Rich. It’s not yet clear how many cases Nicholson has been involved with and which may now be suspect, he said. “We don’t know all those matters will be tainted, just that he had a hand in many of them,” said Rich. “How big and wide and how long the investigation will be are things we’ll figure out in the next couple of weeks.” But although the APD will proceed with caution, officers won’t stop using confiden-

tial informants to help investigate crime, said Rich. The APD chief wouldn’t speculate as to the motives for Nicholson’s alleged actions. “It’s one of those things we may never know, or he may choose BOB RICH to tell us,” said Rich. It’s not completely unheard of for things to go off the rails when officers work with informants, who generally inhabit the criminal world, he added. It’s not known if Nicholson’s actions were a case of noble cause corruption, where an officer believes positive outcomes justify bad behaviour. Regardless, it wouldn’t be tolerated, Rich stressed. “We never colour outside the lines when combating crime,” said Rich. “Every member knows they are duty bound to be ethical no matter what, and catching the bad guy is secondary to that.” Abbotsford residents will be understandably upset at the news, which involves allegations of serious misconduct, said Rich. But after an extensive, eight-month investigation by the Vancouver Police Department, it appears to be an isolated case of corruption. “We are not waiting for the shoe to drop on anybody else,” said Rich. “I hope the community holds in balance that as soon as [the APD] knew it had a problem, it took immediate steps to do the right thing.”

Home invader sentenced to five years JANE SEYD North Shore News

A

n Abbotsford home invader who forced his way into a West Vancouver home, tied up the occupant with zap straps and threatened him with what looked like a handgun has been sent to jail for five years by a North Vancouver judge. Judge Joanne Challenger handed the sentence to Richard Wayne Heino – also known as Richard Wenlock – 24, on Thursday, after Heino pleaded guilty to robbery and use of an imitation gun to commit a crime. The fr ightening – and

apparently random – home invasion happened on the afternoon of Oct. 28, 2012, when Heino and an accomplice rang the doorbell of a home on Haywood Avenue. A young man who lived there in the basement suite of his parents’ house came outside to find Heino and a second man handing out real estate pamphlets. But the resident became suspicious when he saw the second man attempting to conceal zap straps under his jacket. The young man walked back inside his home and called the police to report the pair. As he was hanging up the

CHARGES, from page A1 to fellow officers, who then used the information to obtain search warrants, said Chu. Nicholson, a member of APD for seven years, also allegedly conspired with a confidential informant to have drugs delivered to a residence and have other police officers conduct a search warrant soon after. In addition to conspiring to traffic drugs, Nicholson has also been charged with breach of trust and obstruction of justice. Investigators hope to secure further charges, including those related to falsifying information for the justice system, against Nicholson in coming weeks, said Chu. “Corrupt conduct is not acceptable to any of us in policing,” he said. Rich said the allegations against Nicholson violate an officer’s oath of honesty and the breach of trust impacts the whole justice sys-

phone, Heino and the second man charged into the suite, with Heino brandishing what appeared to be a handgun, said Crown counsel Kristin Bryson. The second man held a 10inch knife. A s t h e y ra n i n , He i n o “attempted to pull back the slide of what appeared to be a gun. The gun jammed,” said Bryson. The pair forced the resident to sit on the floor and the second man bound his wrists with zap straps while Heino worked at unjamming the fake gun, said Bryson.

tem as well as the safety of fellow officers. “If the facts are proven to be true, it appears that not only did Christopher Nicholson mislead the justice system, but he also put the lives and reputations of other police officer at risk,” said Rich. It’s not yet clear how far Nicholson’s actions may have endangered the process of justice. “The information that Christopher Nicholson has provided over the years has assisted in obtaining dozens of search warrants to residences of drug dealers and gang members,” said Rich. The Abbotsford Police board informed Nicholson it intends to enforce the suspension without pay as soon as legally possible, said Rich. While the officer faces his criminal charges, an expedited Police Act disciplinary process headed by Rich will get underway. Nicholson is next scheduled to appear in Vancouver provincial court on June 18.

Abbotsford Mayor Bruce Banman hones his technique for the mayors’ class at the Canadian Plowing Championship on Saturday. The event on Matsqui Prairie will be open to the public. Association president Lynn McDonald (also big brother to NHLer Lanny McDonald). He will also help organize the world’s competition in Olds, Alta, this July, which will draw plowmen from 29 countries. “It’s also the people you meet, and it’s interesting to see how the rest of the world does agriculture,” said McDonald, who’s competed abroad. Although the competitors are serious, there are no trophies or big purse money. In addition to promote good practices among farmers, the competition was

star ted six decades ago “to plow a furrow of peace around the world,” building the plow as a symbol of peace, explained McDonald. Members of the public can come watch, hop on a haywagon ride, and enjoy concessions in the fields. The cost is $5, children 12 and under are free. Saturday is the mayors’ contest and horsedrawn competition. RoseGate Farm is at 33775 Aish Ave. Take the Fore Rd. exit on Hwy. 11 (just before you cross the Mission Bridge) and you’ll see the flags and activities.

f you can plow, prepare the soil, then you could grow food for a lot of people. Plowing, or ploughing, is a time-honoured skill that dates back to humanity’s agricultural roots, thousands of years ago, said Charlie Thomson, one of the local hosts of the 61st Canadian Plowing Championships held this week from May 8 – 11 on Matsqui Prairie. It’s held in conjunction with the annual Chilliwack Plowing Match. “If your plowing is done properly, your field is in good condition for planting, and it takes less labour, less fuel. It’s a whole lot easier,” he said. The event will see 16 competitors from the Prairies, Ontario and as far as New Brunswick tilling rows on RoseGate Dairy and other nearby farms. The plowmen (and a few women) are judged on the workmanship of their furrows, whether they’re straight, uniform in depth and distance from one to the next, whether the sod is turned over well, and whether they start and end at the same place. bbotsford-Mission candidates fielded a range of questions on the budget, jobs and skills training, health care, the proposed garbage incinerator, the carbon tax and transit at a debate Tuesday night. NDP candidate Preet Rai, Liberal Simon Gibson, BC Conservative Don Stahl, Aird Flavelle of the Green Party, independents Wendy Bales and Roman Bojczuk and Marcus Halliday of the BC Excalibur Party argued their merits to the crowd of 70 that attended at the Christian Life Church on Straiton Road. MLA hopefuls, particularly Rai and Gibson, wrangled over questions on balancing the budget, taxes and job creation. Rai said no one believed the Liberal government, which has posted repeated deficits, would actually balance their current budget. Despite inheriting a “financial mess” from the Liberals, the NDP were committed to balancing the budget within three years, he said. Gibson replied the bigger question was whether balancing the budget was even a priority for any other party, particularly the NDP. “Is that a goal [voters] want in this province? I say it is,” he said, adding the Liberals were best able to cut costs and still ensure efficient delivery of services. The carbon tax and Metro Vancouver’s proposed garbage incinerator also got airtime. Stahl said the BCCP would kill the incinerator project to protect the airshed as well as the B.C. carbon tax, which drove up costs

for families, schools and hospitals and made small business uncompetitive. All Liberal Abbotsford-area candidates opposed the incinerator and would take their concerns to Victoria if elected, said Gibson. Rai, Flavelle and Halliday noted that the carbon tax, a levy on fossil fuels that now goes into general revenue, needs to be invested in transit or fostering a green economy. Halliday also suggested expanding the West Coast Express into Abbotsford. Rai also said the incinerator would proceed only following a stringent “made in B.C.” environmental review. Bales argued that investing in renewable energy also would create more jobs. “We could be more sustainable and it would be beneficial to the economy as well.” She also argued strongly in favour of supporting the Agricultural Land Reserve to protect local food production. When it came to dealing with mental health and addictions, Gibson said he’d be addressing the imbalance in funding to the Fraser Health authority. Flavelle argued it was time to stop “throwing money” at the symptoms but treat the root causes, while Bales suggested it would be less costly to prevent and treat mental health and addiction problems than rely on enforcement measures by police and the courts. Bojczuk argued as a lone voice in Legislature, he wouldn’t be able to affect policy decisions much but would rely on residents identify important issues, so he could take them to Victoria.

Evaluating the BC Liberal government T

his analysis deals not with the platform but with the more instructive past performance. If I vote Liberal on May 14, it’ll be for these reasons: – In 1992, when the NDP was elected, B.C.’s GDP per capita was 8 per cent above the Canadian average. By 2001, when the NDP was defeated, it was 8 per cent below. Now it’s again above the average. In 2013, Moody’s awarded B.C. its highest triple A rating. Moody’s praised “the province’s track record of prudent fiscal planning and managing fiscal pressures effectively.” – B.C. has the lowest income tax in Canada for those earning less than $120,000. The small business tax is now half what it was under the NDP. – With the Port Mann Bridge and freeway widening the Liberals remedied this bottleneck. – The rebuilt BC Place Stadium is spectacular. – The new Convention Centre is magnificent. – Rio Tinto’s scheduled $3.3 billion upgrade to its Kitimat smelter, one of many major projects, creates 2,500 construction and 1,000 long-term jobs.

Secondary reasons:

– The minimum wage was increased to $10.25. – The Canadian Federation of Independent Business awarded B.C. an “A” for leading all provinces in red tape reduction. – Since June, 2012 welfare recipients can earn up to $200 a month without clawback. –B.C. is reportedly now a world leader in clean technology with over 200 clean tech firms generating an estimated $2.5 billion in

JOHN REDEKOP

political perspective revenue in 2011. – An Independent Investigations Office was established to investigate serious police officer cases. If I don’t vote Liberal it will be for these reasons: – The costly HST fiasco. – The reprehensible plan to use government resources for partisan gain with ethnic groups. – Cancellation of the $6 million legal defence loan even though senior Liberal staffers Dave Basi and Bob Virk were convicted of crimes in the BC Rail case. – When the Liberals won in 2001, B.C.’s debt, including the guaranteed agencies’ debt, was $33.6 billion. When Christy Clark took over two years ago it was $45 billion. Now it’s $56 billion. – In 2011, Auditor General John Doyle stated that “For a government that strives for transparency and accountability, this is unacceptable.” – The 6.7 cents per litre carbon tax penalizes consumers without reducing pollution. – The new convention centre was to cost $495 million; it cost $841 million. Reconstructing BC Place Stadium was to cost $150 million; it cost $458 million. – One in seven B.C. children lives in poverty. – In 2006, the government ignored the “Missing Women

Report.” Many lives might have been saved. It broke its promise not to sell BC Rail. The government’s incredible mishandling of Boss Power’s mine application cost B.C. taxpayers $30 million. – The 2012 rejection of a tentative deal with Telus to rename BC Place Stadium cost $35 million.

Secondary reasons:

– British Columbians pay twice what Ontarians do for generic drugs. – Instead of lowering insurance rates, the Liberals’ 2010 budget transferred $778 million of ICBC surplus funds to general revenue. – $780,000 was spent on a pro-HST mailer that was never mailed. – After its sale to CN in 2003, BC Rail was left with 40 kilometres of track and 30 employees. CEO Kevin Mahoney’s $500,000 salary reportedly continued. – Numerous high salaries and severances are unconscionable. In 2010, almost 99 per cent of BC Hydro’s 6,000 employees received bonuses totalling $42.3 million. Almost 40 per cent, 2,371, earned more than $100,000. When Premier Christy Clark released aide Allan Seckel, his severance was $549,776. – The first Family Day holiday cost the average small business $1,135. B.C.’s economy lost at least $200 million. – With rising prices the Land Transfer Tax is unfair. I’ve decided how I’ll vote. I urge others to study the issues and do likewise. ◗ John Redekop is a adjunct professor at Trinity Western University.

very year, animal control officers are called out more than once to aid dogs stuck in hot cars for too long. Temperatures spiked early this year, with July weather coming in early May, with some high temperature records broken in the past week. People were not even thinking about hot weather yet, so it’s understandable they were taken by surprise. But problems for pooches can begin on any sunny day if the temperature is above 19 or 20 degrees Celsius. When a dog begins to feel distress will depend on many factors, including breed, air ventilation, and even whether the vehicle’s interior or paint job are dark or light. Yet most of the stories animal control officials hear when they talk to dog owners are the same – they only intended to be inside for a few minutes. They were delayed. Because even the best dog owner can’t predict if they’ll get held up, it’s a better idea to either not bring your dog along for the trip, or to take your pet inside with you wherever you’re going. The alternative may be an embarrassing page over the public address system of a store. Animal control officials will try to find the owners of vehicles if they see a dog left inside a hot car. In more extreme situations, they will take the dog. A few years ago, a dog was left outside a Fraser Valley movie theatre on a sizzling day. With the dog in physical distress, animal control officers called a towing company and the RCMP and had the car door opened and the dog taken to a vet. It’s rare, but officials will seize a dog if necessary. On the positive side, fewer cases seem to be cropping up every year. Perhaps people are finally getting the message about canine care. ■ To comment on this editorial, e-mail us at letters@abbotsfordtimes.com.

Youth should be punished for deplorable act Editor, the Times:

Re: Times, May 7 Youth who abused goose. Would it be possible for the Times to do a story that shows the public how inept our youth justice system is. I worked for 25 years within this system and have seen it go from bad to worse. To give fines to youth (who will never be able to pay the fines) is a joke. They should, in the least, be sent to a facility for a psychiatric assessment, as all data shows that youth who perform cruelty to animals have the traits for psychopathic personalities. These individuals do not deserve to be treated lightly for being sadistic; they need to answer for such deplorable behaviour. I trust the paper will look into this crime further and speak up for these abused geese. Randolf Butcher Abbotsford

The fact that many complaints to the ombudsmen about the referendum process and the municipal act that have not been resolved by the Liberal government after more than five years. Editor, the Times:

Re: Times, April 23 No irregularities in NDP voting process Similar to what the Elections Canada report said about members’ fraud across Canada that should have overturned many election results, why don’t they? By not addressing the serious issues, democracy is not being well served. Can you even call it democracy? There were several members and recruiter irregularity issues that were never properly investigated or addressed by the BC NDP. I believe that some practices of members’ fraud are a problem with the BC Liberals as well as I talked to someone on their list that said that he hadn’t paid for membership since 2005. Someone told me that the same recruiter that had signed up people for the

Editor, the Times:

Many communities like Abbotsford laced up for the MS Society walk for a cure recently. Multiples sclerosis is a chronic, progressive disorder of the nervous system. It is complex and unpredictable and causes loss of balance, impaired speech, extreme fatigue, double vision, and nerve pain. MS is one of the most life-altering diagnoses a person can receive. Canada has one of the highest rates of MS in the world, affecting young people between the ages of 15 to 40 years of age. When I shared my MS diagnosis with Tracy Watson, owner of Hot Tommy’s Restaurant in Abbotsford, and co-worker Loni Paul a few months ago, they listened with empathy and then they responded, “well then, we better work towards finding a cure.” Through fundraising activities such as pancake breakfasts, meat draws and generous donations from Hot Tommy’s patrons, $4,200 was raised. I’d personally like to thank Tracy and Loni for supporting the MS walk. Hot Tommy’s is an excellent example of a business giving back to the community. Judy Olivieri Burnaby

impressed with the amount of work she does for her constituents as a regional district director. There are always a lot of e-mails on my computer to bring me up to date with whatever is going on. I know her to be hard working and honest. There were indeed irregularities at the nomination meeting. Preet Rai was certainly well organized. He brought in a busload of supporters. Not all of them were party members. Some were actually members of the Liberal party. Ms. Bales was able to get proof of this but nobody seemed interested in investigating. Voting was not always done privately. On some occasions there was more than one person in the voting booth. These things are against the rules and should have been investigated instead of sweeping them under the rug. I have always voted NDP but this year I won’t be. I’ll be voting for Wendy Bales. Wendy is well-known and liked here due to her work with the regional district. I know of others intending to vote for her who otherwise would be voting NDP. Worst of all, the NDP has missed out on a worthy candidate. Sue Solomon Deroche

THE TIMES THURSDAY, MAY 9, 2013

INVASION, from page A5 “The victim was able to hear the bullets from the gun being dropped on the counter,” she said. Heino then ransacked the suite, demanding to know where he could find money, drugs or a safe, said Bryson. When he couldn’t open the locked door to the upper part of the house, Heino broke the door down and went upstairs. Eventually, he and his accomplice made off with a phone, camera and about $300 cash. Bryson said the home invasion did not appear to be targeted. The victim didn’t know either Heino or his accom-

plice, she said. Heino was arrested several months later after the victim picked him out of a police photo line-up. Bryson noted Heino has a lengthy criminal record, including 32 convictions. He was on parole for a previous robbery when he committed the home invasion. A repeat offender, Heino was sentenced to two years in prison in December 2010 for committing two bank robberies in Abbotsford. He was also sentenced to seven months jail for possession of stolen property on March 1, 2013 in Abbotsford in connection to a stolen vehicle.

Heino’s defence lawyer said his client took responsibility for his actions during the home invasion. “He’s not here to drag things out or proclaim his innocence,” he said. He noted Heino had a difficult childhood, was bounced through a number of foster homes, and started using crystal meth by the time he was 16. Heino’s mother and girlfriend were both in court for the sentencing. “I love you,” he told them before he was led away. “I wish I could turn back time.” – WITH A FROM ROCHELLE BAKER, ABBOTSFORD TIMES.

t’s not the end but rather a metamorphosis for one of downtown Mission’s iconic enterprises, Murdoch’s Bookshoppe. After serving local book lovers from the First Avenue store since April 1993, Brian and Ann Murdoch will pack up some of their 26,000 books to run the business online from their home. “Downtown Mission has been wonderful. We are going to miss our customers,” said Murdoch last week, already wistful. “It’s the best business, because people will come in and chat and talk about books, and sometimes they’ll even buy a book and pay us.” He added that those who cast about in old bookstores tend to be of a sort: mindful of the environment, grassroots action, shopping local, and they’ve made good friends with many regulars. “We may not have as many customers as Chapters but we have better customers than Chapters,” he joked. In a rushed, cynical world, Mu rd o c h’s re m a i n e d a repository of serenity, civility and intellectual adventure. Between the covers and sometimes musty-smelling pages are countless worlds, ideas, fantasies and stories. To be tucked away in the back room on the green chair by the reading lamp with a stack of books was the perfect place to wile away a rainy afternoon. Weekdays or weekends, it was not unusual to find

He and Ann will remain regulars at the annual Vancouver Book Fair, Sept. 28 and 29 at UBC Robson Square. Murdoch said they will focus on specialty books, rare editions and first printings when working the business from home. One such gem is a short local pioneer history told by a woman whose last name was Agassiz, who published her story out of Washington. He expects to take that to the fall fair.

“It’s the kind of book, when it sells, I’ll never see one like it again,” he says, half excited, half wistful. While his new venture will be primarily web-based, Murdoch hopes customers will come by for tea at their home. While he’s not planning a big fire sale, the shop will close for a few days in June to move inventory – look for a sale when he reopens till the end of the month. “In the meantime, we hope people come by to sign our good-bye book, share a laugh and remember the good times,” he said. Cards snatch victory from Jays Blaze edge ahead of Sr. Cards in hot BCPBL race

Jesse Braun got on base, then stole second and third to put himself in scoring position in the Cards 3-2 win over North Delta Tuesday night.

bbotsford’s top-level baseball squad snatched a victory following the seventh inning stretch Tuesday. On Tuesday night the Abbotsford Sr. Cardinals beat the North Delta Blue Jays 3-2 for their 11th win of the BC Premier Baseball League season at DeLair Park. They earned the win on a bottom of the seventh inning RBI from the bat of Coleton Besse to bring home Jesse Braun. It was Braun who got on base with a single with one out, he stole second base and then third to move into scoring position. As the team iron-men at the plate, Kurtis Kostuk is leading the team with 12 RBI’s on 45 at bats so far this season and Besse has been up to the

plate 46 times earning nine hits and 10 walks. Daniel Koo went the distance on the pitching mound for the full game, throwing four strike-outs and giving up eight hits. It was his second full game of the season. On the weekend they split two games with the Victoria Eagles, winning 4-1 on two RBI’s by Carter Williams. They closed out the series losing 112 in the afternoon matchup. On deck Tuesday for the Sr. Cardinals is the red-hot Langley Blaze who are currently on an 11-game win streak sporting a 13-3 record. In the BCPBL the Blaze just edged ahead of the Cardinals record of 11 wins and four losses.

Junior Cardinals action

Last weekend was a busy one for the Jr. Cardinals as they earned three wins during their four-game weekend. They played the Victoria Jr. Eagles on Sunday to close out their weekend with a 5-3 victory. Pitcher Jonah Swanson stayed in for six and a third innings, striking out

seven batters and giving up 11 hits. Josh Anderson came to the mound in relief for the last two outs. In the first half of Sunday’s doubleheader, pitcher John Lipp pitched a full six innings only to be relieved by Alex Gibbons as the team took the 3-2 win. On Saturday the Jr. Cards were hosted by the Victoria Jr Mariners and the two teams split their double header with the hosts taking the first game 4-1. In the afternoon matchup the Jr. Cards only needed to play five innings as their batters exploded for four runs in the first inning, two runs in the second and four more in each of the third and fifth innings. Abbotsford’s Benji Wieler had three RBI’s as they earned their 14-0 victory on four different Jr. Mariners pitchers. Next action for the Jr. Cards will be Saturday at Abbotsford’s DeLair Park when they host the Jr Mariners for a double header (1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. start times). This will be followed by another two away games Sunday against the North Shore Twins.

Abby ruggers off to Reimer to be inducted provincials Saturday W

or the first time in their 40-year history, the Abbotsford Rugby Club will have all three of their senior men’s sides playing in the provincial rugby finals. “I’m pretty sure this is the first time in our history that we have three teams in the provincial finals so there is a lot of excitement around the club right now,” said Abbotsford head coach Jason Young. “We have a lot of young guys with plenty of depth and they need experience in these types of [playoff] games.” After finishing the regular season in second place, the Abbotsford First Division side travelled to Victoria last Saturday and came out on top in a thrilling 19-15 victory over the Velox Valhallians. Abbotsford led for much of the game, but had to withstand a late push from the Island champions. The B.C. final pits Abbotsford against one of the most established clubs in the province, the Vancouver Rowing Club. Abbotsford defeated the Rowers 28-5 in regular season play, but is definitely anticipating a hard fought game. “We know the league season is completely different from the playoffs. [Rowers] will be fired up and it will be determined on how the players manage their nerves and intensity on the day,” Young added. The Abbotsford Second Division team finished regular season play in first place but opted to travel to Vancouver Island for their semifinal. Playing in front of Velox’s home crowd, the Abby 2s silenced the spectators with a solid 46-29 victory. That result set up an all-Fraser Valley pro-

vincial final this Saturday, where they will square off against long-time rival Surrey Beavers. The young Abbotsford squad is laden with talent that includes Fraser Valley reps Pat Shields and Chris Chalmers, BC U23 rep Lucas de Beer and former Canada-capped veteran Ryan McWhinney. Also included in the roster is McKechnie Cup-winning captain and Canadian national team prospect Aaron Flagg. By virtue of their first place regular season, the Abbotsford Third Division team hosted Vancouver Rowing Club last Saturday, where they avenged a loss from just a month earlier. After a tightly contested first half, the Abby 3s exploded in the second half for a convincing 41-12 victory. This Saturday they face off against the Capilano Rugby Club. Capilano will have the added boost from their home crowd and will be looking for revenge after suffering a 29-7 loss to Abbotsford in regular season play. The club recognizes how special and unique it is to have every team in the provincial finals. It has been a few years since the club has won a provincial title in any division, and Saturday will be a great way to cap their 40th season. Finals take place at Klahanie Park in West Vancouver. Division 3 – Tier B final is 12:30 p.m. (Capilano vs Abbotsford), Division 2 final is 2:20 p.m. (Surrey Beavers vs Abbotsford) and Division 1 final is 4 p.m. (Vancouver Rowing Club vs Abbotsford). – JOHN VAN PUTTEN/TIMES
