Statement I like to observe, watch, contemplate, and sometimes my eyes latch onto something and seize upon an incongruous detail and I find it magnificent. I find my inspiration in contemplation of my surroundings. Whatever my ideas, creating an atmosphere remains my main concern when I conceive each work of art. My essence is expressed through its composition. My work is influenced by fluctuations in my existence among other people. I create imaginary territories. I transform realities. These show the other side of things. The things I feel now, today, living in a large city. This space is in constant movement. A multitude of people encountered in the metro and in streets and park inhabit my work, confronting the silence of my immense bygone lands. These anonymous “Others, heterogeneous, indifferent people share the same place as me. Who are they? These are the things I wonder about. It is essential that my paintings project a certain duality, that they be enigmatic and open to different readings. My artistic language is instinctive, intuitive and non-conformist. As soon as I enter my studio I feel the necessity and urgency of creating. I am completely caught in this intense moment of deciding the format of the support, the colors with which I will establish the atmosphere, and in turn relay my ideas. Tubes of acrylic and oil paints, pastels, felt pens, wood pencils, ink, nail. I employ everything I have at hand without concern for its rules of use. I need to free myself. An initial composition emerges followed by construction work. I do not work according to artistic currents of the day or to audiences and their expectations. It is up to the public to find its own resonance, its own meaning, and pleasure. Above all, my ideas fill an inner need independent of fashions. The artwork, like everything that is vital, must be able to evolve.

Temps suspendu Trajectoires immobilisées. Entracte imprévu au perpétuel mouvement. Temps Suspendu.

Suspended time Trajectories immobilized. An unforeseen interlude of the perpetual motion. Shaken, people take refuge in the parks : air, trees, wind, rest, contemplation. The meanders and the wanderings are frozen in an infinite time. Sometimes, isolated individuals walk there in turn and alter these once peaceful places. The city lights go out in the semi-darkness‌Human loneliness and hope in nature. Marie Rioux, a Quebec artist, is distinguished in particular by her creation of atmospheres covered in duality: nature and human infrastructures. Her paintings are inspired by the North American land and often employ monochrome tones punctuated with fluorescent strokes.
