Zaha Hadid
Zaha Hadid has a particular philosophy on how buildings should interact with their sites. It has to be made to belong in the city that it is placed in1 (Krystyna 5). She also imagines her buildings not coming up from the earth, but coming down from the sky and settling themselves on the landscape delicately and intentionally2 (Hadid 44). Her buildings therefor are very integrated into their sites. She accomplishes this through manipulation of the movement in the building.

Paintings Zaha Hadid is known for her unique way of thinking through her architecture. She creates these abstract paintings that push the boundaries of perspective to develope what the goal was. Many of her paintings speak to motion that is implied within her buildings as well as their role in their sites so they will be helpful in analyzing how movement and site integration are interconnected.
Immitation of Shape Hadid takes on the task of sight integration through immitation of the shape of the surronding site. Preexisting shapes and forms of the landscape are analyzed and refined into a geometry that can be used for architecture.

Figure 7
Curnuntum Museum Curnuntum is the ruins of an army outpost that left behind a unique topography that Hadid continued into her design for its museum.
Figure 8
Painting Analysis
the topography of the site is made really clear in the painting and it creates lines that imply motion and lead the eye into a spiral around the historical sight where the building is. The building itself continues the lines of of the typography bringing in and conforming to the shape of the lanscape. This makes it seem like the building belongs here rather than just exists in the same area.

Cardiff Bay Opera House This is an opera house designed for a site on Cardiff bay Wales. Her focus was creating an indoor and outdoor place for people to interact in view of the bay.
Figure 12
The shape of the building curves with the boat area while also matching the shape of the street. the building opens on the bay side
Figure 13
Painting Analysis
Therough perspective lines and colors, Hadid brings emphasis to the view that the opera house would have and it points out to where the bay is. It is catering to the shape and placement of the surroundings.
Figure 14
The opening left in the outer casing impies a focus on this side of the building out towards the bay. the facilities of the building also opporate around this area.

Figure 16
Interraction with Buildings
Zaha takes also integrates buildings into their sites by connecting them with the style and shape of the surrounding buildings. Continues the movement in these surronding buildings to imply the building belongs in the site rather that just exists.

Berlin IBA Housing
Figure 18
This building was designed for Kreuzberg in an urban area with many surrounding buildings. It fits in very well with the shapes of surrounding buildings while also taking on unconventional shapes. it immitates how on this particular street many of the corner buildings come to a point.
Figure 19
Painting Analysis
Her painting communicates how the building stems from a rectangular shape into a more fluid form. The circulation within the building reflects how it blends in with the surrounding buildings then becomes something more fluid.
Figure 20
Figure 21
Figure 22
Tthe build starts out like the surrounding buildings but then transforms into something more fluid.
Cologne Rheinauhen Redevelopement This building was designed for the city of cologne which is divided into three different territories that have different types of buildings for their functions and distinct cultures. This three part building mimics the movement of each of these territories so it blends nicely with the existing buildings and their functions
Figure 23
Figure 24
The City is 3 distinct sections and the building receives their vertical motion naturally and continues it.
Immitation of Site Circulation
Zaha integrates buildings into their sites by continuing the circulation that already exists in the site. This makes their existance feel natural to people interracting with the building
Figure 25
Figure 26
Vitra Fire Station This fire station was designed so continue the linear motion of the road it runs ajacent too. The inside circulation of the building goes in a long linear path as well implying motion with the dynamic shapes pointing at either end. The circulation of the firetrucks is also immitated by the architecture.
Figure 27
Painting Analysis
Her painting communicates the quick motion of the building down the road with the repetition of pointed shapes in one direction. The coloring of the shapes are indication of their movement as well. This painting implies that the building adds to the movement of the road even though that movement was pre-existing.
Figure 28
Figure 29
The movement lines of the firetrucks are continued in the design of the building.
Figure 30
The movement of the road flows into the movement implied within the station.

Zollhof Media Park This park was designed for the Dusseldorf harbor to transfor into an enterprise zone. It interacts with and encourages the activity of the visitors on both the river and shop sides. She created large glass structures that point out onto the river giving the people inside a view of the activity outside. The entrance is on this side as well. She is very cognicent of the surrounding traffic and orients the motion of the building to express the motion of what’s surrounding it.
Figure 31
Figure 32
Painting Analysis
Both of her paintings are at extreme perspectives from the urban side of this building with street and perspective lines moving towards the building so it is a peak of existing movement. The difference in color represents this as well.
Figure 33

It blends well with the rhythm of the city.

Figure 37
Pre-existing Movement
Zaha integrates buildings by mimicking the movement of the site itself as well rather than simply the circulation. This serves to make the building fit well into its surroundings and seem as if it belongs.
Figure 38
Cologne Rheinauhen Redevelopement This building is also applicable to Zaha’s use of preexisting movement. While it mimicked the divided into three different territories, it also pays attention to the movement of the water it alligns and the shape of the land.
Figure 39
Painting Analysis
Figure 40
Her painting communicates how the building is seperated into 3 different territories but it also puts a focus on how it fits into the available space. The light blue is the space occupied by buildings and the shape of the building fills up this space and continues the motion of the buildings. It also has soft edges near the water that create gentle waves which continues the motion of the water.
Figure 41
The stretched shape of the building encourages circulation with the movement of the buildings and river.
Figure 42
The building fits in nicely with all of the streets and buildings taking up all available space snuggly.

This building is a project to link Vienna more to the waters edge by use of a structure around the railway viaduct. It excentuates the movement of the existing railway and the movement of the water bringing them together.

Figure 50
Site Manipulation
While Zaha Hadid is environmentally friendly, she has found ways to integrate buildings into their sites by manipulating the site iteslf to make them seem more in tune with eachother.
Figure 51
Curnuntum Museum
Figure 52
This building is also an excelent example of altering the site’s movement for integration. Hadid adds structures around the historic site that act as an extension of the topography that lead it in a new direction. This introduces movement from her visitor’s center into the historic site therefore changing the landscape.
Figure 53
Painting Analysis
Figure 54
The painting puts the emphasis on the site but particularly her additions to the sites movement. Her buildings are in white so the new motion of the site is revealed.
