Indiana Key Clubber wins High School Senior Award After the 2010 Haiti earthquake, young seventh grader Yasmin Martinez knew she wanted to make a difference. “It opened my eyes that there are other people in the world, it made me realize I need to help people.” She said. Now four years later Yasmin’s hard work and dedication to service has won her the Outstanding Latino High School Senior Award. Since seventh grade she has gotten involved in Operation Christmas Child, a program that sends shoe boxes full of Christmas gifts to children in developing countries. She even joined Key Club her sophomore year in High School, which was a key decision. “The first time she came to a meeting she presented the Operation Christmas Child project. I had never seen a high school student stand up and be so impactful.” said Vanessa McClary her Key Club adviser. When talking about her Key Club experience she said it taught her how to work in a group and present herself. Yasmin served as President of her school’s club and Lieutenant Governor on the District Board On top of all her service Yasmin played high school volleyball for three years, played viola in the school orchestra, currently plays baritone in the marching band and also has a job. Yasmin has been accepted into her first choice college, University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas, where she plans on studying vision science or chemistry. She would eventually like to start a non-profit organization that offers glasses to people who are in need of them. Yasmin encourages younger students to get involved with school, sports, music and their community.

It’s that time of year again, yep time to get ready to go Trick-or-Treating for UNICEF! Trick-or-Treating is a great way to collect donations for the Eliminate Project and is a great to bond closer as a club. If your club has not yet ordered the Trick-Or-Treat boxes you can do so at keyclub.org by clicking on the Trick-Or-Treat graphic on the homepage. There are countless different ways to raise funds for the Eliminate Project. Your club could do it the oldfashioned way by going door-to-door or you could host a pumpkin smash, zombie walk, haunted house or a pumpkin pie eating contest. You could even come up with your own idea! You can find even more ideas by clicking on the Trick-or-Treat graphic on the homepage of keyclub.org. You can also find fundraising goal charts, canister wrappers, gift forms and your boxes order here. Once you’re done collecting donations you can send a check or a money order (checks made payable to Kiwanis International Foundations) and your completed gift form to: The Eliminate Project:Campaign Office Kiwanis International Foundation 3636 Woodview Trace Indianapolis, IN 46268 USA ATTN: Trick-or-Treat Page 7
Make sure to write your club name or club number on the memo line of the check. This year the goal is to beat last year’s Trick-Or-Treat total and raise over $1 million. Also clubs that raise and submit more than $250 by December 31 will receive a special banner patch. “It’s a great experience for the club to come together and raise money for an extremely amazing cause. Not to mention, everyone has fun dressing up and going around town supporting the cause and spreading the word about MNT.” - Taylor W. “Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF is one of my favorite projects every year. There is nothing better than getting all dressed up with a bunch of friends to raise money for such a worthy cause. We get to have the time of our lives unleashing our inner children in exchange for saving countless children’s lives! Everyone should participate; you wont regret it! - Maddi R. “Not only is Trick-or-Treating for UNICEF super fun, it is also uplifting knowing that I went out and had a blast with my friends and fellow key clubbers while collecting money for The Eliminate Project to save moms and babies! TOT for UNICEF is serisouly my favorite service project.” -Kerstin B.

Spread the K-Fam Helen Keller once said, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” Of course this aphorism is applicable to numerous aspects of life, but it holds especially true to the dynamic of the K-Family. The reason that Key Club International is extremely successful cannot be credited entirely to our life-changing servant leaders, but also to the family we have supporting us. This K-family is comprised of five main branches: K-Kids, Builders Club, Key Club, Circle K, Aktion Club, and Kiwanis Club. K-Kids clubs worldwide, more than 36,000 elementary school children are learning leadership through service. They’re taking on the responsibility of running a K-Kids club as they plan and participate in community service projects. They assist the elderly with chores or organize community food drives. They serve their schools, raising funds for sports equipment and extracurricular activities.

Builders Club is the largest service organization for middle school and junior high students, with more than 45,000 members worldwide. Members learn to work together and develop servant-leaders skills as they serve their school and community. In partnership with UNICEF and March of Dimes, the clubs are able to expand their outreach to babies and children of the world. Key Club ready know

Circle K clubs are organized on a university campus and sponsored by a local Kiwanis club. A self-governing organization, CKI clubs elect their own officers, conduct their own meetings and determine their own service activities. CKI blends community service and leadership training with the opportunity to meet other students.
mily Love Aktion Club members strive to return to their communities the benefits, help and caring they have received, as well as develop important skills in the process. Aktion Club members give an estimated 92,484 hours of service each year, performing a variety of community services, such as environmental projects, park beautification, food drives, nursing home visitations and assisting Kiwanis clubs with their projects. Kiwanis International is a global organization of members dedicated to serving the children of the world. Kiwanis and its family of clubs—nearly 600,000 members strong—annually raise more than US$100 million and dedicate more than 18 million volunteer hours to strengthen communities and serve children. Members of every age attend regular meetings, experience fellowship, raise funds for various causes and participate in service projects

It is the unity of these components that create the incomparable achievements made by all branches. It is therefore imperative that all branches work in harmony with each other. This year the Indiana District Governor, Sally Finkel, has put a major emphasis on the intercommunication and correlation between the branches. The Indiana District aims to increase the quality and quantity of the relationships present between the various clubs all over the District. It is essential to the welfare of this district that each Key Club strengthens its ties with the other branches of the K-Family in their area: attend each other’s meetings, create joint service projects, etc. It’s all of these little things that make a big difference. We are a family and it’s time for us to show the world the love we have for not only them, but also for each other. Written by - Maddi Robling
