NORTHUMBERLAND HAS SOME and that’s official! OF THE BEST PARKS IN BRITAIN

N

orthumberland parks have been named as some of the best in Britain. Parks in Ashington, Bedlington, Berwick, Blyth, Cramlington, Hexham, Morpeth and Seaton Delaval, together with the country parks at Plessey Woods near Bedlington and Bolam Lake near Belsay, have all been awarded prestigious Green Flag Awards by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy.

who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award.”

Northumberland’s winning green spaces are Ridley Park, Hirst Park, Doctor Pit Park, Alexandra Park, Hexham Parks, Carlisle Park, Astley Park, Castle Vale and Coronation Parks, Plessey Woods Country Park and Bolam Lake Country Park, all part of a record-breaking number of award-winning parks and green spaces in 2016.

ALEXANDRA PARK, CRAMLINGTON

The award, now celebrating its 20th year, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country. A green flag flying overhead is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities. International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “We are delighted to be celebrating another recordbreaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme, especially as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Awards. “All the flags flying this year are a testament to the efforts of the thousands of men and women, both staff and volunteers, 6

Entries for the Green Flag Award are open to parks and green spaces located in the UK. Applications are judged against a set of eight key criteria including conservation and heritage, community involvement and sustainability. Here is a little more information on some of the best parks in the area:

Alexandra Park is located in the town of Cramlington in South East Northumberland. The Park was developed in the 1970s to provide recreational opportunities for the expanding population of the new town. The layout is modern with large areas of amenity open space housing football pitches, a bowling green, pavilion, play areas, multi use games area and a skate park. The park also affords informal recreational opportunities as the park has excellent off road links with surrounding areas through a network of footpaths and cycleways. Alexandra Park was entered for Green Flag for the first time this year and has achieved success on its first judging. The judges described the Park as a facility used by a wide range of the local community and is a credit to all involved. They were particularly impressed by the wildflower planting schemes.

BOLAM LAKE COUNTRY PARK, NEAR BELSAY

Bolam Lake is situated 9 miles west of Morpeth and 2.5 miles north of Belsay located just off the A696 The park has around 100 acres of woodland, amenity grassland and 25 acres is the lake itself which affords stunning views as you walk around. The wildlife is abundant and home to red squirrels, deer, mute swans and many woodland birds including the nuthatch There are lovely walks for all the family and many generations have visited with the ever popular activity of feeding the ducks and swans. This year also sees the 200th year since the lake was started by John Dobson and many activities are taking place to celebrate including a full programme of free events for families and talks for all. The park is supported by a active Friends of Bolam Lake group who were thrilled to hear yet again the park had achieved this award

The paddling pool is immensely popular and provides an excellent play space for children of all ages. Enjoy peaceful woodland walks, promenade along the river, or find a vibrant array of colour and a peaceful oasis in the formal gardens and the William Turner Garden.

HIRST PARK, ASHINGTON

Hirst Park is a tranquil green space surrounded by the distinctive colliery rows of Ashington. The park offers attractive walks, the play areas have facilities for children of all ages, while those who enjoy sports are catered for with basketball courts, tennis courts, bowling greens and a multi-use games area. The park is a venue for regular events organised and run by local community groups supported by the council. Hirst Park is currently in the development phase of a Parks for People grant, provided by Heritage Lottery Fund and Big Lottery. Research, consultation and designs are being collated to enable the next phase of the Parks for People funding application to be made in February 2017, which if successful will see investment of ÂŁ2.5million in the park between 2017 and 2022. The Green Flag award recognises the high standard Hirst Park has achieved both as a clean, green and safe place for the residents of Ashington and as a centre for community activity for the area.

DOCTOR PIT PARK, BEDLINGTON

CARLISLE PARK, MORPETH

Carlisle Park is a multi-award winning park in the heart of Morpeth. Situated on the south bank of the River Wansbeck, it contains The William Turner Garden, formal gardens, an aviary, play areas, a paddling pool, ancient woodland, picnic areas, toilets, tennis courts, bowling greens, a skate park, and much more.

Doctor Pit Park is situated in the heart of Bedlington. Families are catered for with high quality play facilities, a multi-use games area and a small skate park. There is a well maintained bowling green and bowls club which is based in the pavilion building. The pavilion offers a community room, full kitchen and toilet facilities and is available for hire by groups or individuals. The Green Flag award recognizes the development of the park as both a hub of community activity and a safe, clean and green area for the residents of Bedlington. The pavilion is home to Doctor Pit Bowls Club, and Bedlington Art Group they all work closely with officers and

as animals including red squirrel, roe deer and fox. The banks of the River Blyth are also an important habitat for wildlife, such as kingfishers, dippers and otters. People have come to Plessey Woods for generations to enjoy the woods and the river. Known locally as Bluebell Woods, the country park is an ideal place for a family day out with great opportunities for getting close to nature.

RIDLEY PARK, BLYTH

Ridley Park provides a variety of recreational opportunities for the local community and visitors. It is popular throughout the year as a destination for all age groups. The Park has well established formal gardens, wooded areas and secluded areas which prove popular with families and walkers who want to enjoy time out in the fresh air. It offers a range of sporting activities including tennis courts and bowls as well as children’s play opportunities with specially designed junior and toddler areas at the southern end of the site.

and staff of Neighbourhood Services to raise funds to improve the park, and to provide activities and events for the local community.

One of the unique features of the park is a water play area installed in 2005 which has proved a great attraction for both the local population and those travelling from other parts of the North East to visit. The water play area is open most days during the summer and is free to use (as are the majority of the activities offered in the park).

Plessey Woods Country Park is located near Hartford Bridge, off the A192, mid-way between Bedlington and Cramlington and about 5 miles south of Morpeth.

For those looking for refreshment while visiting the park there is a cafĂŠ offering food and drink throughout the year and during the summer an ice cream van is on site most days. A further summer attraction in the park are the small fairground rides which operate most days (a small charge is payable for these).

The Park offers 100 acres of woodland, meadow and riverside to explore. The woodland is home to many birds such as the great spotted woodpecker, nuthatch and tree creeper, as well

There are regular organised events during the year led by the Friends of Ridley Park and other community groups which are publicised locally and in press where entry is free.

BLYTH WELCOMES THE TALL SHIPS 60 years after their first race

T

he Port of Blyth in Northumberland will come alive when it hosts the prestigious North Sea Tall Ships Regatta from Friday 26 - Monday 29 August. The four day event will be a fantastic maritime celebration, including live music, street theatre, crew parade and the must see spectacular Parade of Sail, where you can see the dramatic sight of the fleet under full sail. Up to 30 of the largest and most spectacular Tall Ships in the world will sail into Blyth for a fantastic four day festival. The ships, from all parts of the world, including the fantastic Polish giant, the Dar Mlodziezy, will be open for visitors to come on board and get up close and personal with the fleet. There will be lots to see and do over the four days, with 1.5 miles of entertainment, food and drink and of course the stunning Tall Ships themselves. For the children, there is entertainment ranging from fairground rides, to family fun in Ridley Park to sandcastles on the beach. Adults can join the young ones in enjoying the live music just off the sands of South Beach, with Rock and Pop acts entertaining the crowds on the main stage. Hundreds of thousands of visitors are expected to enjoy the event, which also includes nightly fireworks, live music and grand parades. This maritime celebration takes place during the 60th anniversary of The Tall Ships Races, and this event will end with a race from the Northumberland coast to Gothenburg, Sweden. It is a fitting tribute to Blyth’s rich sailing history that the town will once again welcome the Regatta this month. From vantage points along the bay 10

between Blyth and Seaton Sluice, the dramatic sites of the ships at full mast, sails billowing, will be truly breath-taking. The North Sea Tall Ships Regatta is being held for only the second time in six years, and marks the diamond anniversary of The Tall Ships Race. The ships then set off on the 500mile nautical race from Blyth to Gothenburg. The race dates back to 1956, where a total of 20 of the world’s remaining large ships competed. The race took place from Torbay in the UK to Lisbon, and was meant to be the last farewell to the era of the great sailing ships. However, public interest reached such a level, that the Sail Training International Race Committee formed a founding organisation, which has since organised Tall Ships Races and Regattas around the world, attracting hundreds of ships and millions of spectators. For more information about the Regatta, including park and ride, parking, where to stay and other useful information, visit the website at www.tallshipsblyth2016.com

JEAN GENIE

There's nothing to beat the confidence boost when you find a pair of jeans that make you look and feel really fabulous. WIDER CALVES Look for flares and bootcut styles. Faded detail on the thigh will draw the eye upwards.

LARGE THIGHS

Boot leg jeans balance out heaviness. Avoid tapered legs and anything too baggy. Simply Be £38

NO WAIST Band detailing and belts create shape. Tuck in tops to high waist styles to add definition.

CURVY

Choose classic fits such as a straight leg or bootcut for balanced proportions. Darker shades make for a leaner silhouette. Bon Marche £28

PEAR SHAPED Lower rise jeans will make your bottom look smaller as will back pockets. Bootcut and wide legs will balance your figure. Betty Barclay

SHOPPING TIPS 1. Take plenty of time to try on an assortment of sizes and styles - they may fit slightly differently depending on the cut and the brand. 2. Sit down while wearing the jeans to makes sure they are comfortable and there is no gaping at the back. PETITE

Make your legs look longer with a narrow cut. Avoid low rise jeans; a higher waistband lengthens the silhouette. River Island £40

3. Try buying a size smaller to allow for the natural stretch in denim, especially if buying a non-stretch pair. 4. Bring or wear the shoes you are most likely to pair with the jeans in case any alterations are needed.

LIBRARY MOVE COMPLETES £3.5M LEISURE CENTRE REVAMP

C

oncordia Leisure Centre in Cramlington is back in business after going through a dramatic transformation over the last 10 months.

The 1970s leisure centre is now a multi-million pound health and leisure hub, with state of the art equipment and facilities, and the relocation of the town’s library and customer services, from adjacent premises on Forum Way. Funded by Northumberland County Council and Active Northumberland, the redevelopment includes the modernisation of the gym, new soft play facilities, a Clip ‘n Climb climbing experience, spa facility and a 10 lane bowling alley. This week saw the reopening of the main reception area, giving local people and visitors full access to the updated and upgraded facilities in time for the start of the summer holidays. The project was designed by Newcastle-based architects, JDDK Ltd, and built by Robertsons Ltd. The refit is part of a wider programme of work to improve leisure facilities across the county. The integration of library and customer information services is part of a major review of council buildings and assets, which aims to generate more than £33m through the sale of surplus buildings, while also avoiding the closure of libraries across the county. Lorraine Dewison, Chief Executive of Active Northumberland, said: “This is a smart, modern facility, which now offers a wider range of activities and state-of-the-art equipment for both local people and visitors to enjoy. 16

“Cramlington now has a leisure complex that it can be proud of. It’s been a real pleasure watching the project take shape in recent months, and I can’t wait to hear people’s first impressions of the new Concordia. “Customer services and the library are now getting settled into their new surroundings, which is a newly created space at the front of the building, and we thank our customers for their patience and understanding while the finishing touches are applied. Hopefully this will be completed very soon, making Concordia one of the finest facilities anywhere in the county.” Other improvements include the creation of a new MyRide indoor cycling studio - complete with 25 Keiser bikes and virtual instructors - as well as a revamped cafe, and new class studio. The foyer and entrance have been remodelled, along with the changing village, bar, catering areas and party rooms. Councillor Val Tyler, the county council’s cabinet member for arts, leisure and culture, said: “The redevelopment of Concordia ticks a number of boxes for the community and the county council. As well as improving our leisure offer for the town, the project has allowed us to co-locate some of our services for greater convenience to local people. “The council is facing £58m of Government cuts over the next four years, and we are trying to protect frontline services. The leisure centre has been in need of some major investment and I am sure that our residents and visitors will not be disappointed, once they’ve visited Concordia and tried out some of our new facilities."

CRAMLINGTON BAND RELEASE THEIR SECOND ALBUM AFTER 3 YEARS AWAY

A

fter a three-year hiatus, Indierock band The Longsands are back with a brand new album, Us and Them.

The five-piece band, originally from Cramlington, released their critically acclaimed debut album, Meet me in Spanish City, in 2012 and went on to perform infront of millions on live on BBC Radio 2, sharing the stage with Jools Holland and Ocean Colour Scene. They album was critically acclaimed by both the music press and music fans all over the country but, just as momentum began to build, two family tragedies struck the band, which led them to take an extended break. Guitarist Ian Barnes dad had been diagnosed with cancer just weeks before the band headed over to Ireland to tour with Ocean Colour Scene. Ian explained “Paul was going through something very similar. His mam had taken ill just days before our tour with Ocean Colour Scene. He was unable to come and we had to get replacement drummer, Ian Richardson, in at the last minute. As you 20

can imagine, this was taking its toll on us all. At a time when things had really started building momentum, the band just wasn’t the main priority.” “Everything we were going through made us all take stock of our lives. We’d been on the road touring and making records for seven years, nonstop. Something had to give. I decided I would not continue as a full-time band member any more. To be honest I dodn’t even think we would make another record at that point” Unfortunately, Paul’s mam and Ian’s dad both lost their battles with cancer later that year, and The Longsands put their music on the back burner. Early last year the band had a few meetings to discuss the making of a second album. During their time apart, Ian and lead vocalist Trevor Cox had written a number of new tracks and, from their very first rehearsal The Longsands were back! Despite not seeing each other or playing together for quite some time, the band – comprising Ian, Trevor, David Stanyer (lead guitar), Paul Stephenson (drums) and Callum Thompson (bass) – did what they do best – “had a laugh and played great music”. David says: “We rattled through the songs and

it was like we had never been away. If anything, we sounded better. We decided very quickly that we should book some studio time and just go in and record them, live, raw and as a work in progress. “The mix sounds great and we’re really excited about it. The new album has an interesting element to it. We’ve just tried to write about what has been going on. The music and message is very ‘here and now’ and I think it will be something people can relate to.” The band, who are known for their infectious blend of rock, pop, and indie music, recorded Us and Them at Trinity Heights Studios in Newcastle and have already released two tracks, Standing in the Shadows and Tomorrow we Vote, as singles. The Longsands will celebrate the release of their new album with a headline show at The Cluny on Friday, August 12 and are looking forward to

BEAUTY

HOW TO MAKE YOUR HAIR GROW FASTER If you dream of having long, luxurious hair try these tips for fast results

ADDRESS YOUR DIET

Diet is very important for hair growth; you need to be eating sufficient levels of iron, B vitamins, zinc and protein. For an easy-win, add the superfood spirulina to you smoothies, it's a complete protein rich in chlorophyll which helps our hair to grow. As well as greens like kale and iron, this blue-green algae is high in iron (a very important mineral given that the deficiency condition, anemia, can be a major cause of hair loss). A supplement like the Holland & Barrett Hair Food (£10.69, hollandandbarrett.com), containing a combination of Vitamin B, Iron, Zinc and other minerals can also help to contribute to the maintenance of healthy locks if your diet isn't well balanced

STOP CLOGGING YOUR FOLLICLES

Dirt, oils and product build-up can clog your follicles, hindering healthy hair growth. To avoid this, try to give your hair a rest from overloading the root area with styling products – dry shampoo and volumising powders are common culprits.

EXFOLIATE YOUR SCALP

If your scalps is the gateway to healthy hair, it makes sense that exfoliating it helps promote hair growth. Use a detoxifying shampoo like Aveda Invati Exfoliating Shampoo (right, £22, aveda.co.uk) once a week to thoroughly cleanse and remove excess sebum from follicles – as well as the product build-up mentioned above.

GET A CAFFEINE HIT

Caffeine has been found to stimulate the hair shaft by blocking the effects of DHT, a chemical known to damage hair follicles and according to German scientists at the University of Lübeck, it can speed up hair growth by 25%. Unfortunately drinking it won't help. Instead try the O'right RECOFFEE Volumising Shampoo (£17.25, o-right.co.uk) and the Plantur 39 Phyto-Caffeine Tonic (£8.99, feelunique.com), with formulas that encourage hair growth. 22

MASSAGE YOUR SCALP

Massage stimulates blood circulation, supporting the tiny blood vessels that feed the hair follicles. Gentle pulling of the hair (so you feel tension, NOT pain) and doing a rhythmic tapping technique are two massage methods to try yourself. Alternatively book in for a professional Indian head massage – hey, stress-relief can help your hair grow too!

DO LESS

Washing, styling and chemical colouring, that is. Daily shampooing can compromise the scalp's natural essential oils that stimulate growth, while excessive heat-styling, backcombing, brushing and chemically processing the hair can leave it brittle, appearing to shorten the length from the bottom-up when it breaks.

LOOSEN TIGHT HAIRBANDS

Another common cause of breakage is the humble hairband. Tight elastics, worn repetitively in the same place cause wear and tear on the hair which is not what you want when you're growing it. The wrong band can snag and damage strands, so pick the right type and keep them loose. Hair authority Mark Hill recommends bands without metal fasteners as these are the worst offenders, or you could try the Invisibobble (above, £3.75 for 3, boots. com) which puts less pressure on your hair because of its telephone cord shape.

HAVE REGULAR TRIMS

Not because cutting your hair makes it grow faster – sadly that's a myth, BUT when hair is freshly snipped the ends will appear coarser without their damaged, tapered points. Plus by trimming it regularly and managing damage you'll have to cut off less hair in the long run, so indirectly you're speeding things up!

GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY … BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare. 26

Property and Affairs

This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments.

Personal Welfare

This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment.

All work we undertake is at fixed fees: Single Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney: £300 inclusive of VAT

Double Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney (suitable for couples): £420 inclusive of VAT Single Will: £120 inclusive of VAT Mirror Will: £156 inclusive of VAT It is imperative that specialist advice is taken in order to ensure that the power given accurately reflects your wishes. Call Crichton Wills Trusts & Probate on 01670 514772 and speak to a specialist adviser today who will be happy to discuss any concerns you may have and offers a free no obligation appointment in the comfort of your own home.

FIRST CLASS PHYSIO If you have travelled along Gosforth High Street in recent times, you'll have noticed the bold blue and yellow signs advertising a special physiotherapy service – Gosforth Physio & Wellness. This centre of excellence on Ivy Road offers help, assessment and treatment to anyone suffering from a wide range of physical, psychological and wellbeing issues. Its physiotherapy services are second-to-none – but it offers much more than that. Gosforth Physio's founder, Kevin Kennedy, has brought together under one roof a team of highly qualified, expert and empathetic clinicians in fields such as podiatry & chiropody, acupuncture, psychology, sports injury & rehabilitation, pilates, yoga and therapeutic massage. With Gosforth Physio and Wellness about to celebrate its first year in business, I went to see for myself exactly what makes this clinic different. I spoke to Kevin Kennedy about his vision… He told me “When I first qualified as a physiotherapist, I became aware that, although there were many examples of good practice in our profession, complementary services were often fragmented and scattered. This meant that many patients with particular issues had to seek out experts in different locations in a bid to solve their problems. It was difficult for patients – and treatments were, by definition, often piecemeal and sometimes almost contradictory. “I was determined that, when the time was right, I would establish a practice that could deliver the best evidence-based, holistic, physical and psychological services to patients – all in one place. 30

“At Gosforth Physio and Wellness, we aim firstly to help our patients fully understand their physical, cognitive and emotional difficulties. Our treatments then help patients restore and maintain their optimum health, wellbeing and performance. We know that time spent assessing, educating and treating each person as an individual speeds their recovery and helps them achieve their goals quicker. “People lead busy lives, so at Gosforth Physio we also offer relaxing, therapeutic massages to help soothe away stress. Our pilates classes are run by a qualified physiotherapist, and our yoga classes are supervised by experienced, qualified teachers. We also provide mindfulness courses run by a qualified clinical psychologist. All of these extra patient services are why we use 'wellness' in our clinic's name”. Coming away from Gosforth Physio and Wellness it struck me that, like all good ideas, Kevin Kennedy's is a simple one. Offer people first-class physio and complementary treatments all in one place? What's not to like about that? To book an appointment call 0191 284 9111 and quote ‘ABC’ to get 20% off your first treatment. www.gosforthphysio.co.uk By Michael O'Sullivan – www.thewordwizard.co.uk

TUCK IN: Freshly made afternoon tea at Hello Dolly

38

HELLO DOLLY!

REVIEW

...and welcome to Bedlington Situated in the old police station at the top of Bedlington front street (next to Weatherspoons), this quaint little tea room is exactly what the town, needs.

C

oming from Stakeford, whenever I was looking for a venue serving Afternoon tea, my choices in the local area were almost non-existent – meaning a long drive to satisfy my cravings. So, growing tired of the long journeys to find suitable establishments, I was absolutely thrilled when I heard the news that a brand new vintage tea room was opening right here in Bedlington, serving a selection of lunch options – including my favourite afternoon tea. Situated in the old police station at the top of Bedlington front street (next to Weatherspoons), this quaint little tea room is exactly what the town, and the area in general, needed. From the moment we walked in we were whisked away to a bygone era, leaving the hustle and bustle of modern day life behind. The tea room is very tastefully decorated, every part of the décor has been carefully thought out and the whole thing really works. There are some wonderful touches, none more unique that the old style record player that subtly plays soothing classic 50’s and 60’s music as a background ambiance. We were welcomed to our seats (the tea room is small and quant with half a dozen tables) and shown the double sided menu. The menu consisted of a good selection of sandwiches, paninis, toasties, breakfast choices, scones, sweet treats as well as a specials board and the afternoon tea choices. My partner’s choice was easy – the afternoon tea, very reasonably priced at just £8.00, so, bucking my normal trend, I opted for the cheese and onion panini, knowing I would also be sampling her selection as well! The afternoon tea consisted of freshly cut sandwiches, a handful of kettle chips, their renowned home-baked scones with cream and strawberry preserve, a cake of your choosing from the many on display, and a pot of tea. When our order arrived, the afternoon tea was served on a beautiful two-tiered cake stand. The bottom plate held the savoury choices, with the sweet delights above, and was accompanied by a matching vintage tea pot and cup and saucer. The sandwiches were fresh, and the fillings (ham in one, and cheese and pickle in the other) were plentiful. The freshly

made scones were very pleasant and (forgetting the calories for one afternoon) tasted even better when layered with fresh cream and homemade preserve. My panini was beautifully light, yet filling at the same time. It was accompanied by a fresh side salad with balsamic dressing, and homemade coleslaw. Not taking anything away from the delightful panini, but the coleslaw was a match for it, the taste was so fresh and crunchy, it was a perfect accompaniment. It was a real pleasure to see as much care and attention put to the side salad as the main dish, far too often the salad is just an afterthought – not at Hello Dolly! After a brief respite to savour what we had already eaten, we eyed the lemon cake my partner had chosen for the finale. The cake was well worth the wait, it was soft and moist, and the sugar and lemon icing on top was very moreish! Throughout our visit, the staff, were friendly and interacted well with the customers. Nothing was too much trouble and, after we had finished eating, we were not made to feel that they wanted us out of the way. We were able to sit back, relax and let our food digest. We had a brief chat with Tina, one of the two owners (she runs the tea room with her sister Yvonne) who told us all about her other passion, for arts and crafts, and she showed us in to another slightly smaller room which showcases all of her work. From pendants to earrings, from trinkets to typographic art, you can purchase items all at a very reasonable price. She also showed us the two cells that came with the property (and jokingly told us that this is where she keeps any customer who complains about the food!). One of these cells will soon be renovated and become a room for private hire – now that certainly is a unique venue to tell you family and friends about! We would certainly recommend Hello Dolly as a destination for a special occasion, a place to meet friends for coffee, or even for a nice alternative for a light lunch. It is very refreshing to see a venue like this is Bedlington, it is definitely a must visit! WHY YOU SHOULD HIRE A FREELANCE COPYWRITER FOR YOUR BUSINESS… Blog posts. Website content. Brochures. Newsletters. Press releases. Reports. Sales letters. So much to write, so little time… Sound familiar? Maybe it's time to bring in reinforcements - and hiring a professional copywriter may just be the answer. Here are 10 good reasons why you should hire one (compiled by Michael O’Sullivan from The Word Wizard): 1. They will put the time in to do the job right. Let’s face it: even if you or another staff member can write well, do you have the time to write what you need for your business? A freelance copywriter will make time for your project and give it their full attention. 2. They know a little about a lot. Freelance writers gain knowledge & experience with every piece they write. As a result, they can suggest ideas and improvements to make your audience sit up and take notice. 3. They wear many hats. A freelance writer focuses on more than readability, spelling, grammar and basic sentence structure. They know how to make your copy appealing; how to make it sing. 4. They offer a fresh set of eyes. They’ll clean up your copy; give it some polish; make it easy to understand. 5. They can help improve your sales. They’ll focus on your products or services from your customer’s point of view - and sell them the benefits, not just the features. 6. They are professional. They’ll take time to understand your company’s unique needs; 48

they’ll meet deadlines, pay attention to detail and weave your message consistently across all your content. 7. They help you and your business succeed. They’ll unleash the power of the written word, making your life easier - and your business better. 8. They allow you to maximise your time. Time is money. Hiring a freelance writer will get you more of both. When they’re doing the writing, you can get on with what you do best - running your business. 9. They will help you create a style. A freelance writer will work with you to develop a style, a unique voice that can help brand your business. 10. They will not disappoint. When you hire a professional freelance writer you can rest easy, knowing you will get quality content every time. If you want to find out what a local professional copywriter can do for your business, please get in touch with The Word Wizard by calling 01670 351 708 or 07592 061975. You can also visit www.thewordwizard.co.uk. (Quote 'select' to get 20% off your first project).

HOW TO OVERCOME NEGATIVE THOUGHT PATTERNS

Our minds are constantly racing with thousands of thoughts a day and often those thoughts are negative and self- defeating. Irene Anderson offers some advice on overcoming these destructive thought patterns.

C

onsider the following example story about a man (we will call him John) who wants to borrow his neighbour`s lawn mower. He sets off and starts to think, “what if my neighbour says no? , what if he is cross with me for asking?, what if he shouts at me? I bet he does, he's always been grumpy, I don't even know why I'm bothering. He finally knocks on the neighbour`s door and when he answers it John punches him in the face and says “you can keep your lawn mower, I don`t want it anyway!!“ How often do we second guess things and spend our time worrying about what other people think or what might happen or convincing yourself that you won't be able to do something or stew over certain thoughts again and again? You may think you can`t help this, that`s just how your mind works. Howevr, the truth is we DO have power over our thoughts and when we change our thoughts then things in our life change because we see things differently. Successful athletes, and people who excel in their chosen field will tell you, that it is getting their mindset right that makes the difference between success and failure. So what can we do to stop our destructive thought patterns ? SHUT THE DUCK UP! Firstly become aware of the thoughts you have . Just start to notice what is running through your mind . Then 52

“Thoughts become things, choose them wisely “

acknowledge them as just thoughts , quacking on like a noisy duck. Take a couple of deep breaths and re frame things . Instead of thinking . I can`t do this , think rather, what do I need to do to make this happen or get this job done? This re framing already takes the anxiety out of the situation and calms the part of the brain that constantly sees threat . PROGRAMME YOURSELF TO THINK POSITIVELY Start your day by taking some quiet time, where you focus on taking several really deep breaths and setting the intention to challenge your negative thought chatter whenever you become aware of it . Give yourself some positive affirmations to use when you become aware of the negative chatter . “I am capable and able to deal with any situation” “I will be able to meet whatever challenge the day brings“ “ I trust myself to make good choices “ “Today will be a productive day “ WHAT WE PAY ATTENTION TO WE GET MORE OF You can choose to dwell on everything that you feel is going wrong, and you can bet your life you will get more of the same OR you can be grateful for and focus on everything that is going RIGHT. The more you focus on the good things in your life and be openly thankful for them the less hold the negative chatter has on you AND THE MORE YOU WILL ENJOY YOUR LIFE . Whether you think you can or you can`t , you are right, it`s what you believe that will make the difference. Like all new skills, re framing your thoughts takes time and you won't get it overnight. Just keep being aware that the chatter in your head is nothing but that , idle chatter . You don`t have to believe it or take any notice of it . Breathe, let it go, imagine it as a balloon with the string cut flying off into the distance and out of sight . Smile , wave it goodbye , then move on with your day.

SUFFERING FROM DOMESTIC ABUSE? THERE IS A WAY OUT

Hindle Campbell can help you

D

omestic Abuse is a hideous crime which shatters lives, often in secret, leaving people feeling vulnerable and trapped. You do not have to be trapped; there is a way out. Shock new figures released by the Crown Prosecution Service show that offences of violence against women and girls continue to increase. The number of convictions for domestic abuse offences is at a record high. Whatever your perception of domestic abuse is, it does not respect geographical lines, gender or social class. It affects men and women and is spread across the full spectrum of society. Many people tend to think domestic abuse is limited to the use of violence and intimidation but it is much more far reaching. The Government definition of domestic abuse is: Any incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive, threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between those aged 16 or over who are, or have been, intimate partners or family members regardless of gender or sexuality. The abuse can encompass, but is not limited to: • psychological • physical • sexual • financial • emotional 54

It is not just violence. Abusive behaviour can involve damaging someone’s self worth, controlling finances, manipulation, preventing someone from having friendships or hobbies, humiliation, making someone feel guilty about what they’re wearing and what they eat. The list goes on. The Government have consulted on creating a new offence of domestic abuse, criminalising coercive and controlling behaviour. Other protective measures have been introduced and the police have additional powers. Most people don’t know where to start and are in fear of contacting agencies and the police for fear of repercussions. Then of course you worry about the practical things: Where will you live? ALTERNATIVES TO MICROSOFT OFFICE With a slew of alternatives now readily available, Richard Eyles from ONE I.T Support asks whether it's time to reconsider your reliance on Microsoft's ubiquitous Office suite and branch into alternatives.

N

ow that Microsoft's pricing structure is coming increasingly under the microscope we analyse the competitors for their long-standing crown. We will also weigh up the benefits of other, less famous rivals in this age of proliferation, and ask, is Office even the right solution for you?

OPEN OFFICE

One of the most famous alternatives on the market and one of the most renowned pieces of open source software, Open Office has been widely available for more than 15 years. Incorporating word documents, graphics, presentations, spreadsheets, databases and more, it also supports Office documents and offers templates and instructional wizards. Visit: www.openoffice.org

As you can see, there are many alternatives out there for those of you tired of Microsoft Office. Open source alternatives as well as web-based programs offer a range of different services whilst still emulating the key aspects of the infamous Office, and remaining compatible with their file types.

GOOGLE DOCS

Covering all bases Office offers, Google's program includes Docs, Sheets and Slides (all corresponding to relevant Office alternatives). Although a Google account is required, this is free, as is access to all programs once the account is created. Google also offers Google Drive to store and save your work, and within this offers the option to collaborate with colleagues through cloud storage, allowing them access to your files and vice versa. Visit: www.google.com/docs/about

LIBRE OFFICE

Another open source suite, Libre Office was actually created following a parting of the ways with Open Office back in 2010. Up to their 4th iteration 56

most modern of all Office emulators and offshoots. Here the programs are named Writer, Presentations and Spreadsheet and all offer exactly what one would expect. Again the program is compatible with many varieties of file including Docs, but WPS also offers the ability to convert PDF files, add watermarks or create multi-page ebooks. Visit: wps.com/office-free

now, Libre Office retains a distinct feel of Microsoft Office once opened which should allay any qualms about adapting to a new program. It also offers several more advanced features through extensions and customisation, all of which is able to be tailored to each user. V isit: www.libreoffice.org

WPS OFFICE

The final contender in our rundown, WPS Office could be seen as the

In conclusion then, with a little research on the internet, and possibly several trials, we believe that each user could find a viable alternative to Microsoft Office very easily. Depending on requirements, the options above will fulfil your needs without having to shell out the expected prices. Should you require a more comprehensive service however, for a business for example, we would highly recommend contacting us at One IT Support to discuss best options and alternatives. SUMMER READING THE LITTLE RED CHAIRS By Edna O’Brien

When a wanted war criminal from the Balkans, masquerading as a faith healer, settles in a small west coast Irish village, the community are in thrall. One woman, Fidelma McBride, falls under his spell and in this astonishing novel, Edna O’Brien charts the consequences of that fatal attraction. The Little Red Chairs is a story about love, the artifice of evil, and the terrible necessity of accountability in our shattered, damaged world.

THE ROAD TO LITTLE DRIBBLING: MORE NOTES FROM A SMALL ISLAND By Bill Bryson

To mark the twentieth anniversary of Notes from a Small Island, Bryson makes a brand-new journey round Britain to see what has changed. Following a route he dubs the Bryson Line, from Bognor Regis to Cape Wrath, by way of places that many people never get to at all, Bryson sets out to rediscover the wondrously beautiful, magnificently eccentric, endearingly unique country that he thought he knew but doesn’t altogether recognize any more. Once again, with his matchless homing instinct for the funniest and quirkiest, his unerring eye for the idiotic, the endearing, the ridiculous and the scandalous, Bryson gives us an acute and perceptive insight into all that is best and worst about Britain today.

ALL INVOLVED By Ryan Gattis

That's when it hits me. I'm staring at a war zone. In South Central. On an April night in 1992, Payasa learns that her older brother has been stabbed to death, his body left out in the road to rot. He was never involved. He was innocent. He didn't even carry a gun. And that messes with the rules, even for Lynwood, even for the streets. But it's the first day of the LA riots, and the city is tearing itself apart. Fire-fighters, graffiti artists, nurses and law enforcement - all of them connected by this murder - find themselves caught in the mayhem. Every cop is distracted, and for the people who see the law as an enemy, it's a chance to settle old scores. That's just too good an opportunity to miss. 60

The forces of evil are closing in fast, and if Ivy and Seb are ever to see their parents again, they must get to the bottom of a family secret as shameful as it is incredible...before it's too late.

HIDDEN ORACLE - THE TRIALS OF APOLLO By Rick Riordan

How do you punish an immortal? By making him human. After angering his father Zeus, the god Apollo is cast down from Olympus. Weak and disorientated, he lands in New York City as a regular teenage boy. Now, without his godly powers, the fourthousand-year-old deity must learn to survive in the modern world until he can somehow find a way to regain Zeus’ favour.

In his best bee onesie, Norman makes quite a convincing bee - but how long will his disguise last? And when the hive is endangered can he finally discover his true destiny and become The Bumblebear?

Houseplants to help you sleep better The best calming plants for your bedroom From the plants that will help you breathe easy at night and the famously soporific scent of lavender to the beautifully fragrant flower that scientists claim is as potent as prescription sleeping tablets – we’ve rounded up the best houseplants for sending you off into the land of nod for a restful night’s sleep. Forget popping pills and pop one of these on your bedside table instead… LAVENDER Lavender has been used in aromatherapy for centuries as a natural sleep aid – and you only have to breathe in a noseful of this pretty purple-flowered plant to experience its instant calming effect. But you don’t need to take our word for it. There is plenty of scientific evidence to support the link between lavender and relaxation. Read more about lavender and get your hands on some now while it’s still in season. Gardenia Gardenia is not only a favourite among perfumers, who clamour to include it in their fragrances and scented candles – it’s also a popular choice for its sleep-inducing abilities. One study found that a whiff of Gardenia could be as potent as a prescribed dose of Valium. Areca palm Dry air can lead to a dry nose and throat – making it difficult to breathe comfortably when you’re trying to drift off. This is especially problematic if you have a cold or suffer from sinus trouble – and can be exacerbated by central heating (in winter) and air-conditioning (in summer). Cue the areca palm. Releasing moisture into 62

the atmosphere, it eradicates dry air. It also purifies the air, removing toxins and carbon dioxide.

benzene, from the air. Plus, its long, vertical leaves mean it won’t be vying for space in your bedroom.

Mother-in-law’s tongue Mother-in-laws and snakes might not exactly be synonymous with sleep and relaxation – but ironically, the mother-in-law’s tongue (also commonly known as the snake plant) could be the ideal bedtime companion. This elegant plant with lush, glossy leaves emits oxygen through the night, while taking in carbon dioxide. It also filters nasty common household toxins, like formaldehyde, trichloroethylene and

Aloe vera Renowned for its skin-soothing properties, aloe vera also helps to clear formaldehyde and benzene from the atmosphere. Absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen throughout the night, it’s widely regarded as an ideal bedroom plant. Aloe was named by NASA as one of the top air-purifying plants – working much like mother-in-law’s tongue to give out oxygen during the night. It’s also super-easy to look after so ideal for sleep-deprived types with busy lives. Houseplants not only add life and colour to your home, they can clean up the air, too. Most houses contain toxins, which are emitted from everyday items, such as cleaning and personal care products, carpets, upholstery and paint. houseplants can cut ozone emissions from office equipment, such as photocopiers and scanners, making them an ideal addition to your workspace, too.
